Latin America in revolt

Continent defies USA: For over two decades the US has forced neoliberalism — and its accompanying poverty and despair — down Third World throats in order to make the world better for US business. Now, unable to defeat a rag-tag bunch of Iraqi militias, and rapidly losing allies in Latin America, the empire is not looking so strong.

Ex-Officials Say Bolton Inflated Syrian Danger

John R. Bolton clashed repeatedly with American intelligence officials in 2002 and 2003 as he sought to deliver warnings about Syrian efforts to acquire unconventional weapons that the Central Intelligence Agency and other experts rejected as exaggerated, according to former intelligence officials.

They've vanished into the netherworld of a Homeland Security gulag and their story has already disappeared from the headlines, but the shocking case of two 16-year-old girls from New York City arrested a month ago ought to inspire outrage among every American worthy of the name. Were 5 Unarmed and Wounded Iraqi's Murdered By U.S. Marines In A Fallujah Mosque?

Shoot the Messenger

Last November when a US marine shot dead an unarmed, wounded Iraqi in a Fallujah mosque, the story created international headlines. In fact, it was the biggest scandal to hit the US military in Iraq since Abu Ghraib. What we still don't know is what actually went on outside the frame of that now infamous image?

Explosive Video Report From SBS Australia

In his first international interview, the journalist responsible for capturing that awful shooting spoke with Dateline's Sophie McNeill, and a warning - this story contains strong language and confronting images. Let me say that we've left some particularly graphic scenes in this report because we believe they're critical to understanding exactly what happened that day in Fallujah. Click here to watch. MAY 3: Organize a Vigil to Mourn Civilian Casualties of War

As you know, our colleague and friend Marla Ruzicka and her Iraqi colleague Faiz Ali Salim were killed in Iraq a week and a half ago, while working to document civilian casualties resulting from the Iraq war and occupation, and get compensation for Iraqi families.

Marla¹s organization, CIVIC, is trying to bring more attention to the issue of civilian casualties by asking communities to hold vigils next Tuesday, May 3. Please forward this to people who might be interested or people who already are do ongoing vigils and might want to use next week¹s vigil to highlight the issue of civilian deaths and injuries caused by war.

Thanks for your help in spreading the word and all of your efforts to honor and call attention to the issue of civilian casualties.

Best,

Global Exchange

ACTION ALERT: MAY 3 ORGANIZE A VIGIL TO MOURN CIVILIAN CASUALTIES OF WAR

The Campaign for Innocent Victims in Conflict (CIVIC), the organization founded by Marla Ruzicka, the 28-year-old aid worker who was killed in a suicide bombing in Iraq last week, is calling on people throughout the United States to honor and promote Marla and her Iraqi colleague Faiz Ali Salim¹s work by taking action on behalf of civilian casualties of war.

CIVIC is asking people in communities throughout the United States and the world to hold vigils on Tuesday, May 3, to bring attention to civilian deaths and injuries caused by war. Please create the most beautiful vigils possible, including candles, flowers, and photos in an effort to bring attention to the immense scale of human suffering that war brings.

For more information about how to organize a vigil, go to http://www.civicworldwide.org/content.jsp?content_KEY=513

Please visit CIVIC¹s website, http://www.civicworldwide.org, to host or participate in a vigil on May 3 in your community.

Honoring Marla Ruzicka and Faiz Ali Salim means carrying on the heartfelt work they began.

In Memory of Marla Ruzicka 1976 - 2005

Bay Area activist Marla Ruzicka spent her 28-year life fighting tirelessly for justice. She began organizing and educating her peers about social and environmental issues when she was in high school, bringing in speakers to her school and volunteering her time with various organizations. Marla later worked with AIDS victims in Zimbabwe, refugees in Palestine and campesinos in Nicaragua.

Following the US invasion of Afghanistan, Marla traveled there with Global Exchange and was so moved by the plight of the civilian victims that she dedicated the rest of her too short life to helping innocent victims of war in both Afghanistan and Iraq. She created an organization, Campaign for Innocent Victims In Conflict (CIVIC), to count casualties, provide assistance, and pressure the US government to take responsibility for the innocent civilians harmed by US forces. She was on such a mission in Iraq when she met her untimely death on Saturday, April 16, 2005 in Baghdad.

Marla will be remembered for her pioneering work, and also for her unyielding zest for life, remarkable capacity for joy, and deep loyalty to friends and family. Marla's smile stopped people in their tracks and her optimism inspired all those around her. Everyone whose life touched Marla's is richer for the experience, and her spirit will leave an indelible mark in the world.

We also remember and honor the work of Faiz Ali Salim, Marla's Iraqi colleague, who was killed with while working to bring attention and comfort to civilian victims of the Iraq war.

Bad Religion, Bad Politics

by Katrina vanden Heuvel
April 25, 2005

I'm writing this on the eve of " Justice Sunday "--a telecast being promoted by evangelical Christian conservatives who charge that Democrats opposing President Bush's judicial nominees are acting "against people of faith."

The Senate Republican's Defender of the Faith, Bill Frist , who supports a "culture of life" but not lively debate, is scheduled to join in this televised show--designed to smear those who have honest differences over policy issues as religious bigots. As the Boston Globe asked in a tough editorial attacking Frist's intolerance: "Will every political difference now open opponents to such accusations? And whose definition of 'faith' is in use here?" Republicans attack media outlets in battle over Rule 22

Molly Ivins

04.26.05

AUSTIN, Texas -- I was all set to write a column about the nuclear option -- the proposal to change the rules of the Senate in order to get President Bush's most questionable judicial appointments through -- when, lo, word came that there is no nuclear option anymore. It is now called "the constitutional option."

Who changed it? Why, the Republican Party, of course. Having found that "nuclear option" does not poll well, the Republicans simply decreed the rules change can no longer be described by that name. Further, the Republican Party sent media operatives around to major news organizations to inform them that anyone who fails to obey the new diktat on usage will be demonstrating the dread "liberal bias." Jeff Gannon Exposed, in 'Doonesbury' and New Documents

by E&P Staff (Editor & Publisher)

Published: April 24, 2005 10:30 PM ET

NEW YORK The reporter/blogger formerly known as James D. Guckert, who had pretty much escaped the public eye this month, staged a dramatic comeback on Sunday, re-appearing in Doonesbury and making news as Secret Service documents concerning his White House visits were released.

In the Doonesbury strip, which several weeks ago brought back Roland the reporter as a White House “stooge,” a colleague asked Roland if he is still “taking money from the dark side.” Roland challenged him to report that, if true. “I’d miss you too much,” the other journo replied.

“You guys weren’t so sentimental about Jeff Gannon,” Roland responded. “Why not me?”

Lonely in the Middle

by Lou Dobbs

USNews.com 5/2/05 (on internet at least by Tuesday, April 26)

Compassionate conservatism has been the catchphrase of George W. Bush since the presidential campaign of 2000, but those two words must now ring hollow to the more than 100 million Americans who make up our middle class. There is nothing conservative about our rising record budget and trade deficits. There is nothing compassionate about the president's idea of Social Security reform, the rollback of coverage for ever more costly healthcare for working Americans, or the most recent assault on the middle class: the new bankruptcy reform bill that Bush signed into law last week.

It's ironic that Congress approved the bankruptcy bill to impose fiscal discipline on the middle class when the federal government last year ran up a $412 billion budget deficit and a $617 billion trade deficit. President Bush's temerity in signing this legislation was the ultimate hypocrisy in a town already very well credentialed. Add to that hypocrisy the House of Representatives' vote to permanently repeal the estate tax for the wealthy, as Congress further rent the middle class's social safety net.

Compassionate conservatism? The new bankruptcy law was virtually written by the credit card companies and banks, making it far more difficult for American families to erase their debt. The credit card firms are not exactly struggling. Their profits, in fact, have risen steadily over the past decade. The Right's Siege Mentality

At Justice Sunday, speaker after speaker told of the terrible injustice being perpetrated by Senate Democrats. Sinister, powerful liberals are attacking you, your children and everything you believe in. Despite all evidence to the contrary, it's the conservative rallying cry.

By Paul Waldman , TomPaine.com . Posted April 26, 2005 on AlterNet.org

Many progressives watched in puzzlement at the end of last year as religious conservatives declared that a war was being waged across America, a campaign of untold savagery whose sole victim was a holiday celebrated by approximately four out of every five Americans. Forced to endure the horror of department store signs reading "Happy Holidays," conservatives beat their breasts and gnashed their teeth over the War on Christmas.

No doubt we'll be hearing about that war again, round about Thanksgiving. But in the interim we have the Judicial War On Faith, a conflagration written from the same script: Liberals drunk on their overwhelming power smash mighty fists down on the tender heads of righteous yet weak conservatives, who absorb blow after debilitating blow until they can stand no more, and rise up to restore all that is right and good with America. A Scathing Chairman Dean Finds Republicans 'Evil,' 'Corrupt' and 'Brain-Dead'

Howard Dean may not be running for anything, but his elbows appear to be as sharp as ever.

Since taking over as chairman of the Democratic National Committee earlier this year, the former presidential candidate has been quoted in newspapers making unusually caustic remarks about Republicans.

Dean has suggested that they are "evil." That they are "corrupt." He called them "brain-dead" during a stop in Toronto -- and while the Terri Schiavo case was still in the news. He has tagged Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) as a "liar." Last week, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that he mimicked a "drug-snorting Rush Limbaugh" at an event there. Sarichef is a small island—no more than a quarter of a mile across and two and a half miles long—and Shishmaref is basically the only thing on it. To the north is the Chukchi Sea, and in every other direction lies the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve, which probably ranks as one of the least visited national parks in the country. During the last ice age, the land bridge—exposed by a drop in sea levels of more than three hundred feet—grew to be nearly a thousand miles wide. The preserve occupies that part of it which, after more than ten thousand years of warmth, still remains above water. [...] Read the rest at: http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/?050425fa_fact3

A Bolton from the Bush

04/27/05

Republican Senator Chuck Hagel has some concerns about George W. Bush's pick for UN Ambassador. He says, 'I have been troubled with more and more allegations, revelations, coming out about his style, his method of operation.' John Bolton, of course, is a very different man than Chuck Hagel. In theory, both are members of the Republican Party. The similarities stop there. Hagel served in Vietnam, and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts for sustaining injury in combat. Bolton, like most members of the current administration, has never worn a military uniform. ... There are a variety of reports now circulating that Bolton has abused subordinates that failed to adhere to his desired party line. It must have been frustrating to be John Bolton in the State Department, what with all those communist -- I mean, terrorist -- sympathizers at Foggy Bottom. He'll love the United Nations, I'm sure...

If those of us involved in the Bolton Battle have done anything, we helped create a political space that sensible Democrat and Republican politicians could get into to think less like robots over this nomination -- and to ponder the big issues that Bolton' s nomination has pushed to the surface. ... I want the White House to show to what absurd lengths it will go to push a candidate so disdainful of the United Nations, so disdainful of principled American engagement in the world, so disdainful of dissent and debate among colleagues on the American side of the equation, so disdainful of the realities of delicate diplomacy in vital national security matters, so disdainful of the U.S. Congress to the point of lying outright to them about his past, so disdainful of the separation of powers in our government...

Earth's Ecology

~ Idea 1913 ~

The three existing Draft Declarations of Human Responsibilities which are mentioned in these 2000 ideas have opened a completely new chapter too because I can see the rapid emergence of requests and work on declarations of human responsibilities and duties:

Toward the Earth as a whole
Toward the seas and oceans
Toward outer space

Toward the air and atmosphere
Toward the waters of the Earth
Toward its forest covers

Toward vegetation
Toward other species
Toward human settlements, etc.

Toward evolution, etc.

And another great chapter will be opened by my recommendation in Idea 1892 that there should be Declarations of No-rights, the rights not to do harm and unnecessary damages to people and to the Earth.

Wer gewerkschaftlich sich organisieren will fliegt raus.

Call Congress Today About the Iraq Funding Bill

This week, Congress aims to complete a final version of the $81 billion Iraq-Afghanistan Supplemental Appropriations bill. Members of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees, working together as a conference committee, are meeting today to work through differences in their respective versions of the bill.

Please take a few minutes this morning or afternoon to call your Congressional representatives. Together, we can help change this bill. (Your Congressional phone numbers are below.)

Follow the link below to help end torture and to fund reconstruction instead of war in Iraq.
http://ga3.org/ct/-1A7S5F1hX34/callcongress

Although both the House and Senate versions fail to address most of the AFSC's concerns about the future direction of U.S. policy in Iraq, there are several differences between the bills that will influence our ability to hold legislators accountable in the future. The Senate version contains four amendments that represent some limited progress toward our goal of a free and peaceful Iraq.

Contact your elected officials today and ask that the provisions of these four Senate amendments be included in the final House-Senate version of the Iraq Supplemental. You can also ask your elected officials to speak with their colleagues on the Appropriations Committees, who are deliberating these measures.

Follow the link below for talking points and contact information for your legislators.

Alaska temps record breakers

I was watching the Weather Channel this morning and they showed a chart of April temps in Alaska. Today and the past two days are record breakers - in the 60's. For the month there are 5 normal temp days, the rest excluding today and the past two- are above average. It's actually been warmer these three days than it has been here in SW Ohio, U.S.

The mayor gets rid of all the antennas - First place in the world: No antennas and no phones anymore

What a price people have to pay before it happens.

From tomorrow's newspaper, please circulate widely !

http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/grim_cancer_cluster_usfien150099.jpg
How to look at the attached map:
blue: cellular antennas above 20 meters
yellow: pirate radio antennas
red: deceased - 83 people
green: cancer patients 105

Please circulate the below widely and wildly !

The mayor didn't ask the people what they thought about it, the mayor ended with the antennas for good, the cellular phones, and 3G will be for Daila's and Osafia's museum only.

The mayor ordered to remove antennas [all of them].

The fight against the cellular antennas becomes much stronger; the central cellular antennas farm in Dalia was dismantled this week, after the owner of the house on which it had been placed was warned by the mayor of legal proceedings against him by the municipality.

By Hadid Rashi

The antennas farm in Daliat il Carmel [together with Osafia, it is a new city called Carmel, the cancer map of Osafia is actually the map of cases from Dalia and Osafia] was dismantled this week after the owner of the house on which it had been placed, Suliman Basis, was called to the mayor's office, Dr. Akram Hason, who handed him over a legal order to dismantle the antennas farm on his roof. Basis is a known contractor in Daliat il Carmel, who works for the cellular companies, asks to stress that he received the permission to dismantle the site - from the cellular companies.

"After the meeting with the mayor, during which I was told in an unequivocal way that legal proceedings would be taken against me, I received the permission from the companies to dismantle the site, I performed the work by myself and with my responsibility, and I also wasn't interested in making the religion leaders angry at me and at my family".

The mayor, Dr. Akram Hason, who started dismantling the antennas in the two villages already 3 months ago, met two weeks ago with the representatives of the Christians and the Muslims, and they raised the idea of doing a religious excommunication on owners of houses in the villages on which cellular antennas are placed, and he claims that he is determined now more than ever to take the antennas away from Dalia and Osafia.

"I was sitting with the cellular companies, and I made it clear to them in an unequivocal way that I would not leave one cellular antenna in the villages area" Hason says.

"I called the owners of the houses on which the antennas farm or one antenna was placed, and I made it clear to them that at first stage I request to remove the antennas, and if within certain time they don't dismantle it, I will send the municipality people to remove the site and I will charge payment for this from the house owner."

Actually people from the village tell that instead of municipality people- the police goes to houses.

The population in Carmel is 25,000.

I think the cancer cases will not diminish so quickly. All the time more and more cases are found due to the history of exposure and latency period. Also in Zoran, if you remember their story - after the removal of Hillel station, still there are new cancer cases found all the time including children. The numbers are higher than I wrote back then.

Omega see under:

Hillel station - a lesson in statistics
http://omega.twoday.net/stories/659062/

The cancer cases in Osafia are in an area of only two streets, one small street and one big street - where the antennas were.

The people got used quite quickly to be without reception/cell phones, they just accept it.

The first time I was there about 2 weeks ago. I spoke with the person who burnt the antennas, very nice person, he felt victim. He and his wife were living right in front of huge antennas, and his wife started bleeding in the brain. One side of her brain became paralyzed, she went through operation, now she is better. He said he can't prove it's from the antennas, but he sure thinks it is.

The way the mayor succeeded in doing this move to remove the antennas, was because of the work of his vice mayor, Suliman Abu Ruchen. Suliman didn't stop pushing this subject, he helped getting the medical files from people for the map. He went to check the permission documents for EVERY antenna in the city, and he found that the cellular companies used the operation permissions as constructions permissions, that means the Env. ministry gave them to irradiate but the municipality didn't give them permission to build the antennas at all, and they did. So, many antennas were not legal. When Suliman exposed what he had found to the companies, they were silent and surprised. Because they are doing it all over Israel, but this is the first time that someone caught it !!

Suliman said that he would have no problem burning them because they were not legal anyway ! The companies were silent in reaction.

Suliman said they were very very strict with the companies, they didn't let the companies express themselves too much, they just made it clear in a sharp way, and the companies didn't have much to do about it.

Yesterday I spoke with someone who lives in a village with cellular antennas in the middle of the village. Around the antennas, about 30 women got enlarged thyroid glands, some went through serious operations. The antennas are there for two years and the enlarged thyroid glands started two months ago. Only in women.

UMTS: Vorsorgewert „kalt abgeschossen“

Dies beleidigt Millionen arbeitslose Menschen in diesem Land.
