Apropos Nikotinsucht

WHO - Repacholi INFORMATION FOR GENERAL PUBLIC

WHO to develop a general fact sheet that includes the following points: - range of symptoms of IEI - no attribution of causality to EMF - do not include prevalence of EHS but rather prevalence of the different symptoms (and longstanding history of these) in general population - do warn against commercial products to shield against EMF - discourage measurements in homes - exclude underlying somatic disease by usual physical examination - no proof of any correlation between these symptoms and later diseases - reminder of basic physics (NIR vs. IR, etc) - recovery is certainly possible without taking drastic measures - stress due to introduction of new technologies - need for coping strategies

WHO - Repacholi

INFORMATION FOR PHYSICIANS

- Information regarding ill-defined symptoms and undifferentiated illness should be included in post-graduate training - Experts should develop an international protocol for physicians that includes current diagnosis and treatment information - National governments should develop tailored information for medical practitioners

WHO - Repacholi

ADVICE TO GOVERNMENTS

Governments need to put the issue of IEI into their general risk communication strategies. They also need to address the following issues: - Patients have real symptoms, some of which are attributed to EMF, but there is no scientific evidence of causal link, therefore no grounds to use IEI as a diagnostic classification for handicap status. But symptoms could be used as a classification. - No indication that lowering the limits would reduce the prevalence of symptoms attributed to EMF - Discourage measurements in homes - Develop appropriate interaction with self-help groups - Anticipate problems with new technologies, and provide balanced information, promote dialogue. Note different attitude taken for new pharmaceuticals, both before introduction and post-marketing surveillance. Possible role for complaints registers?

Plans to change mast regulations

by Jolene Hill

THE long campaign for health fears to become a valid objection against mobile phone masts has stepped up a gear.

Outraged residents have protested against masts of different sizes, many not requiring planning permission, springing up all over the borough.

Radiation detectors have shown high levels in homes close to masts and residents believe the waves are linked to ill-health.

Now Bromley Council is asking the Government for health issues to be considered when looking at planning permission for masts.

It also wants developers to apply for planning permission for all masts, not just the larger ones.

But some residents believe the council's action is too little, too late.

They say back in 2000 the independent Stewart Committee recommended tighter planning laws as a precaution because the effects of masts on health were still unknown.

The committee also said in January this year health risks could not be ruled out because not enough research has been carried out.

Angela Shields, 37, moved to her home on Footbury Hill Road, Orpington, near the BT telephone exchange on Chislehurst Road, in 2000.

When a mast went up in February, Mrs Shields and her family experienced nose-bleeds, headaches and insomnia until they arranged their furniture away from the signal.

She said: "The masts are breeding like flies and so many people from Bromley have bad health effects but no-one has listened."

There is currently no scientific evidence to prove the link and laws do not allow councils to consider health concerns.

Councillor Chris Maines proposed the idea of asking the Government to change the regulations over objections.

He said: "This would allow us to come down on the side of health concerns. It would be up to the developer to prove masts are safe."

Deputy council leader Councillor Graham Arthur said: "We are calling on the Government to give us the powers so people can have their say on all masts and antennae."

WHO Manipulationsvorschläge für die Öffentlichkeit

http://www.omega-news.info/who_manipulationsvorschlaege_fuer_die_oeffentlichkeit.htm

Was will Herr Repacholi denn noch?

Rubrik: Gesundheit & Wellness Datum: 10.07.2005

Offener Brief an Edmund Stoiber

An Ministerpräsident Dr. Edmund Stoiber Staatskanzlei
Postfach 220011

Häufig erkrankten viele Anwohner gleichzeitig an diesen Symptomen
(z.B. in Schweinfurt: Eselshöhe, in Kulmbach: Senioren-Wohnanlage Mainpark, in Hof: Kösseinestraße, in Forchheim: Ortsteil Burk).

Hochachtungsvoll

National Park Service drafting management plan for Denali National Park & Preserve

Take Action

National Park Service drafting management plan for Denali National Park & Preserve -- your comments needed.

As pure symbol of remote, wild beauty, few places on the planet equal Denali National Park in Alaska. Here is our nation's highest mountain. Here is safe haven for 38 mammal species, including wolves, moose, caribou, Dall sheep and grizzly bears. Here, simply, is magnificent wilderness enjoyed by climbers, hikers, berry pickers, wildlife watchers and birders.

The National Park Service is now drafting a management plan that will govern the Park's backcountry for the next decade and beyond. The agency has proposed opening 4 million acres of the Park to snowmobiling and increased airplane tours which will destroy the natural quiet and alter the wilderness experience. Click here to tell the Park Service to manage Denali as the natural treasure it is. The deadline is this Friday, July 15th: http://ga1.org/campaign/denali/

What's At Stake

Denali is the oldest and most famous National Park in Alaska. Congress set it aside in 1917 to protect its extraordinary wildlife populations. In 1980 Congress expanded the Park to 6 million acres and formally designated the original 2 million-acre core as Wilderness. The National Park Service (NPS) is now accepting public comment on a backcountry management plan that will determine the future of this matchless place.

We're encouraged by the Park Service's continued commitment to safeguard the 2- million-acre Wilderness core of Denali, also known as "the Old Park." The designated Wilderness of Denali has been closed to snowmachines since it was established in 1917.

But we adamantly oppose the Park Service's proposal to allow recreational snowmobiling and increased scenic tour airplane landings in the other 4 million acres of Denali. The Denali we treasure today would not survive such uses.

A Motorized Invasion or Quiet Beauty?

Recreational snowmobiling is flatly incompatible with the purposes for which Denali was set aside and shouldn't be in the Park. Anywhere. Period. The physical impacts of recreational snowmobiling are severe and well documented: unacceptable air and water pollution and disturbances to wildlife. Just as real are the impacts on the intangible but fundamental values of wilderness: solitude, natural quiet and natural sounds, the unhurried pace of human-powered recreation obliterated by the noise and stink of motors.

Growing demand for airborne sightseeing tours has driven up dramatically air traffic over the Park's wilderness. By some estimates, Denali is second only to the Grand Canyon now as the Park with the most congested airspace. The swelling use has increased conflicts with hikers, climbers and local property owners. Natural quiet and the opportunity to hear and enjoy natural sounds are rapidly disappearing on nearly all of Alaska's accessible public lands. Denali is no exception, but it ought to be. The Park Service should do whatever it takes to establish meaningful overflight regulations and limits on landings within the Park.

Denali National Park and Preserve is, in fact and in law, a wilderness park. The 1980 Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act declared the Park's purposes to be preservation of those wilderness values. The National Park Service has found that virtually all 4 million acres of the 1980 additions qualify for wilderness designation. But the agency is now proposing uses incompatible with wilderness designation. The agency must protect all inventoried suitable wilderness until the Congress has acted on the wilderness recommendation

How You Can Help: Take Action Today to Demand a Wild Denali!

The deadline for public comments to the National Park Service is Friday, July 15, 2005. Please take a few moments today to let the agency know how you want this splendid National Park managed. You can send your comments immediately from http://ga1.org/campaign/denali/

If you'd prefer to send your own comments, a sample letter below includes the major points. Increasingly in these comment processes, your own words are the best ones and personalized letters are likely to have the greatest impact. If you've visited Denali and can speak first-hand about your experiences there, all the better.

Sample Letter

Dear Superintendent Anderson:

I appreciate the opportunity to comment on the Denali Backcountry Plan. Denali's wilderness character, world-famous wildlife, spectacular landscapes, clean air and water, natural sounds, and opportunities for solitude and primitive recreation must be protected. Only the People for the Parks Alternative promises to do so and to do so by complying with existing policy and law. I strongly support that alternative.

Denali's wilderness and wildlife face an unrelenting siege of human demands and uses. Recreational snowmobiling is incompatible with the purposes of the Park and should not be allowed in Denali.

With the demand for scenic air or "flightseeing" tours growing, Now is the time for the National Park Service to establish meaningful overflight regulations and limits on landings, not to casually open Denali's backcountry to even more landings. Natural quiet, and the opportunity to hear and enjoy natural sounds, is rapidly disappearing from our public lands. Denali is no exception. But it surely ought to be.

The Park Service must complete the wilderness review and recommendation process that the 1980 Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act mandates before it makes other management decisions. NPS management policies and the Wilderness Act of 1964 clearly direct the Park Service manage suitable wilderness lands as though they were designated wilderness until the Congress acts on a wilderness recommendation. I strongly urge you to do so.

Sincerely,
(Your name and address)

Words to Inspire

"It is imperative to maintain portions of the wilderness untouched so that a tree will rot where it falls, a waterfall will pour its curve without generating electricity, a trumpeter swan may float on uncontaminated water-and moderns may at least see what their ancestors knew in their nerves and blood."

HLV INFO 107/AT

12-07-2005

Dr. Claus Scheingraber 12-07-05

http://omega.twoday.net/stories/817097/

Are Cell Phones Carcinogenic?

Part One
by Robert Egwele The Epoch Times Jul 04, 2005

UNSEEN DANGER: Studies demonstrate potential risk of cell phones. Photos.com High-resolution image (1596 x 2400 pixels, 300 dpi)

Cellular phones have become an essential part of our lives today. Most people can’t live without these devices and really can’t remember what life was like before their creation. Everyone is encouraged to have one of these devices, even our children. Cell phone towers are being erected right and left with little or no objection from the public.

Most people assume that because cell phones are in general use, they must be safe. Any independent research showing the potential dangers is quickly discredited. Are there reasons to be concerned?

In August 2000, Dr. Christopher Neuman, a neurologist, filed a suit alleging that his prolonged cell phone use was responsible for the brain tumor that was slowly killing him. He accused the cell phone industry of knowing that these gadgets were unsafe and deliberately misleading the public into thinking that cell phones are harmless. Neuman demanded $800 million from seven cell phone manufacturers and cellular service providers. The malignant tumor in question was discovered in March 1998 behind Neuman’s right ear, the same ear that he used when on his cell phone. He claimed that he used a wireless phone several times daily between ’92 and ’98.

This case became a catalyst responsible for general mistrust of cellular technology. Several similar cases have been brought to the courts, but like Neuman’s, were defeated. Of course, many studies were done to show the public that what happened to Neuman and others were anomalies, and that there was no correlation between cell phone use and cancer of any kind. In an effort to combat the cellular backlash, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that there was no evidence that radiation from cell phones posed a health risk. However, the FDA also concluded that there was no proof that cell phones are risk free, either. The above position and a few studies portraying cell phones in a positive light were all that was needed to quickly diffuse public tension, and the Neuman case was ultimately forgotten.

Some studies have been done before and after the Neuman case showing that cell phones emit a radio frequency (RF) that may be harmful to frequent users. The RF that cell phones emit is very similar to those in microwave ovens. Microwave (MW) energy oscillates at millions of cycles per second. The Journal of Cellular Biochemistry states that these frequencies cause cancer and other ailments by interfering with cellular DNA. Between 20 and 80 percent of the RF given off by cell phones is absorbed into the user’s head. The amount of RF absorbed depends on how close the antenna is to the user, the duration of time the user is exposed to the RF and the power level of the cell phone. The longer one is exposed to RF, the better chance one has of becoming ill. How many people are aware of this information? Not many, because findings of this nature are all but ignored by the mainstream media.

Many years ago, there was a debate about the safety of microwave ovens, which has since dissipated. Imagine what a microwave oven does to food, and imagine what a cell phone may be doing to your brain. It is safe to say that most people will not find the thought too appealing.

Sorrows Of Empire

The United States has been inching toward imperialism and militarism for many years. Disguising the direction they were taking, American leaders cloaked their foreign policy in euphemisms such as "lone superpower," "indispensable nation," "reluctant sheriff," "humanitarian intervention," and "globalization." However, with the advent of the George Bush administration in 2001, these pretenses gave way to assertions of the Second Coming of the Roman Empire.

Japanese company Nippon Paper Group is following the lead of a key rival by reviewing its policy for purchasing woodchips from old growth forests. Nippon is the latest customer of Tasmanian exporter Gunns Ltd to consider new policies after Mitsubishi Paper Mill moved to reject woodchips derived from Tasmania, Australia's old growth and high-conservation value forests late last month. The Earth's forest conservation movement has a unique opportunity to follow up upon our recent victory in Tasmania - taking the next step to transition the paper industry to a No Old-Growth stance. Nippon is carrying out a public consultation on their raw materials policy which would provide the opportunity it needs to follow the lead of Mitsubishi and dump Tasmanian old growth woodchips. Comments are being taken only through a form on their web site, where they ask for the "Main Point" and "Reason or Background" in regard to their raw materials procurement policy. Below are suggestions for the basic message we should be trying to communicate, which you can copy and paste, but please add your own language if possible.

Provide comments before July 19th on Behalf of Tasmanian Old-Growth at: http://www.np-g.com/e/csr/ideology/materials_form.html

Main Point: I am very upset that Nippon is still buying woodchips sourced from the old growth forests of Tasmania. Nippon should immediately stop buying woodchips sourced from all old growth and other high conservation value forests. To keep up with your competitor Mitsubishi, you must adopt a no old-growth forests use policy.

Reason or Background A broad global consensus has emerged that industrial logging of old-growth, and other endangered forests, is antiquated and no longer acceptable. Ancient forests are required to maintain local as well as global ecological sustainability. Industrial development of Tasmanian and other endangered forests irrevocably diminishes them. To protect the Earth and all her life, the world's remaining old-growth must be protected from commercial scale development. World Heritage-class Tasmanian and other old-growth forests should not be fodder for woodchips. Businesses that fail to heed this message will feel the pain of market rejection.

Are the Good Times Really Over For Good?

by Sheila Samples

Where are the Christians? Where is the revulsion at Bush roaming freely on hallowed ground while belching out lies and deceit that have caused the slaughter of 1,942 coalition troops -- 1,752 of them American -- more than 18,000 wounded or maimed; 10,000 stricken with lifelong disease? Where is the raw horror that Christians should feel for a charlatan who boasts that he is on a mission from God -- a mission to rule over a world of hate and lies and fear and death and disease? You'd think the souls of true Christians would surely shrivel when a man who claims Jesus Christ as his "philosopher" murders hundreds of thousands of innocents, abuses and tortures hundreds, maybe even thousands, more and then raises blood-stained fists -- shakes them in the face of the Almighty, and shouts, "Thou Fool!" You'd think, as a minimum, Christians would remember who in the Bible is known as the "Great Deceiver." You'd think. But alas...

Nobody Attacks Civilization

by Charley Reese

British Prime Minister Tony Blair and President George W. Bush went into their standard routine after the London bombings. This was an attack against civilization and all civilized nations, they said.

That's bosh and hokum, and it does a disservice to the people. The first step always in solving any problem is to define the problem correctly. There are no terrorists anywhere in the world whose goal is the destruction of civilization, Western or otherwise.

The terrorist attacks against the U.S., Great Britain and Spain are motivated exclusively by Western policies toward the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the presence of Western military forces in Islamic countries. Al-Qaeda, the ideological source of these attacks, has always been crystal-clear and specific about its reasons for declaring war against the United States. A tall order

Jul 11 2005

James Johnston,Teeside Evening Gazette

Residents are set to launch a fresh protest against a mobile phone company that built a mast on their doorsteps.

People on Stockton 's Bishopton Road West awoke to discover engineers from O2 had installed the 12m mast at the footpath outside the Rimswell pub.

They expected a slimline steel pole similar to a street light but were shocked at the mast - which has a 53-inch circumference - and are now lobbying Stockton Council and Stockton South MP Dari Taylor to have it removed.

Marilyn Temple, of Fairfield Road , said: "It has ruined the whole area. I can't believe that they would put this sort of thing in a residential area."

Last year protesters were overjoyed when Stockton Council rejected an application for a mast.

But the Government's planning inspectorate decided in favour of the telecommunication company.

William Thompson, 83, of Fairfield Road , said: "We think the engineers came at about five or six in the morning to put it up. It's just a sneaky way to stop any protests.

A spokeswoman for O2 said they follow strict procedures when installing equipment and work with the Highways Agency to avoid traffic problems.

"The apparatus is a 12m street furniture-style column, which has been built in accordance with the permission granted to O2.

"The installation of the pole took place at a time which would cause minimal disruption to pedestrians and vehicles."

Mast protesters stage stand off

BBC News Website

Angry residents who failed to stop a 12-metre phone mast being put up near a school, have staged a stand off with workers who moved in to clear the site.

Police had to ask the placard-waving protesters, who live near Byron Avenue in Winchester, Hampshire, to leave to allow work to begin at the site.

The protest came after residents, worried about potential health dangers, launched a High Court battle.

Mast owner Orange said such concerns were not backed by scientific evidence.

Omega such concerns are backed by scientific evidence. See under: http://www.buergerwelle.de/body_science.html

Angry resident Karen Barratt said: "We think it absolutely disgusting that this mast is going up.

"There is plenty of evidence that it causes severe health effects for people - whatever Orange and the Government say.

"It's far too close to the school and our children, my grandchildren are being put at risk."

The residents' challenge had been brought in the names of two children that live near the mast - Phoebe St Leger-Davey, six, and seven-year-old James Harrison.

Lawyers for the children had told the court that they lived and went to school within 250 to 300 metres of the mast site and within the "zone of greatest intensity of electromagnetic emissions".

'Insufficient scientific evidence'

But the Court of Appeal dismissed a challenge in December against a High Court judge's refusal to review government consent for the mast.

The case was also taken to the House of Lords but residents were refused leave to appeal.

Carmel O'Hara, from Orange , said: "Their concerns about health are not substantiated by any scientific evidence at this time.

Omega their concerns about health are substantiated by more than enough scientific evidence. See under: http://www.buergerwelle.de/body_science.html

"All our sites meet the strictest international guidelines.

Omega see under: "Base Stations, operating within strict national and international Guidelines, do not present a Health Risk" http://omega.twoday.net/stories/771911/

"Each of the High Court cases have been dismissed and therefore our consent has stood. We feel that it is time for us to implement the consent."

But another resident vowed: "We will pursue this and we will get that decision overturned."

Dramatische Zunahme umweltbedingter Erkrankungen

Einladung zur Gründungs-Pressekonferenz des Vereins z. Hilfe umweltbedingt Erkrankter [Pressemappe]

FEARS ON LINE OVER MAST PLAN

DANIEL.EVANS@GRIMSBYTELEGRAPH.CO.UK

12:30 - 09 July 2005

Residents are in uproar over a site for a proposed mobile phone mast - on a grass verge.

Vodafone is consulting with the public as it tries to find a suitable site in Humberston's North Sea Lane for a base station to provide 3G coverage for mobile users. It will then decide whether or not to make a formal planning submission to North East Lincolnshire Council.

A grass verge at the junction of Carrington Drive and North Sea Lane has been earmarked for the 8m-high telegraph-style pole, with three antennae at the top.

But a petition has been signed by more than 100 people and posted to Mono, the consultants for Vodafone.

Father-of-four Michael Swift (47) has lived on North Sea Lane for five years, just metres away from the site.

He said: "The Government still hasn't done all the research into the effects of mobile phone masts.

"I would have safety concerns for my children and grandchild. It's also an eyesore and would lower the value of properties."

Vodafone says an existing tree there "will provide some screening of the installation from the residential properties to the south." and states in letters to nearby residents it "will not look out of character" with the rest of the telegraph poles and street lamps lining North Sea Lane .

Miles Davis (32) is another who lives within 20m of the proposed mast site. He has written letters of objection to the consultants and the council's planning department.

"It's rather silly of them to put it so close to the houses when the health effects are unproved and it's an unsolved issue," he said.

Omega the health effects are proved. See under:
http://www.buergerwelle.de/body_science.html

"The tree will not prevent it being clearly visible."

His mother Wynette (67) added: "I couldn't believe it when we got the letter. Nobody round here wants it to happen."

Patricia Barrs prepared the petition to record her own and many others' dismay.

"It's not been proven conclusively that they aren't harmful and that tree is hardly going to hide a mast."

North Sea Lane resident Chris Kershaw (35) fears for the effects it could have on his five and seven year old sons.

"It's not been proven either way that what is emitted from masts is harmful," he said.

Omega the harmful health effects are beeing conclusively proved. See under: http://www.buergerwelle.de/body_science.html

And neighbour Miriam Dawson added: "This is a rural area and it would ruin the ambience - it would be more than an eyesore."

DECT weg - Depressionen weg

How Information Is Regulated To Fulfill Secret Agendas

Here are some "slight-of-hand" methods which can be used to regulate information for a secret agenda:

Laws that allow the forced removal of a criminal website or entity. We are led to believe that these laws are there to protect us from "money laundering", "drug trafficking", "porn", "gambling", "terrorism", "scam", "spam" and others. These are the stated reasons why the site or entity must be removed. And these are the reasons they put on the newspaper headlines when you get arrested. However, the real reasons may be something else entirely. Wouldn't it be a lot easier to create filter software for our browsers? Why all the trouble for these special new laws? The reason is obvious. Anyone in this country could be arrested, convicted, and sent to prison for just about anything, including terrorism, and regardless of who they are or what they've done. The court system may consist of honest people (not saying it does), and still be a dishonest system. We'll now cover the "why."

The question is, will these laws be used for good or for bad? (let's define good as "in the best interests of the people", and bad as "in the best interests of the oppressor".) Why ask this question? Because all the new laws in the last several years (and especially since 9/11) all have dual-purpose mechanisms. Of great interest are the "deniable secondary purposes" to these laws. As we put together all the lines of function they create (like a jigsaw puzzle), we see something form which is too comprehensive in its obvious purpose to be there from mere happenstance.

The forced removal of URL references and websites anywhere in cyberspace by stealth software which already has remote access to your computer. We see this frequently, during repeated onslaughts of large numbers of computer viruses (put there as cover for what is really happening): My computer and two of my friends' had all URL references and bookmarks to a special website forcefully removed by a stealth trojan or worm, which we have not yet identified. My guess is the same references were forcefully removed from nearly all computers on the Internet during the same period of time. The website created by the World Trade Center structural engineer was removed from the Internet, and all references to it in our personal computers were also removed during this time. None of us can find any of our e-mails or bookmarks with this URL in it - neither the inbox nor the outbox contain these specific e-mails - they were destroyed maliciously by a moderately advanced to advanced stealth monitoring program. This encryption article explains how easy this is to do. It doesn't have to be advanced, but I suspect it was since we could not identify it. The NIMDA or Badtrans viruses may have been involved in its "infiltration phase". Then once installed those viruses can be deleted without disrupting outside control over the data in your computer.

Your home is no longer your castle. The U.S. Supreme Court has annulled another section of the Constitution, decreeing that any local government can take your property if they claim it's for the 'public good.' This ruling in Kelo vs. New London has James Madison, who wrote the document, turning in his grave ... again. Property rights yield to corporate welfare

Americans can wave goodbye to constitutional property rights protections, after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-to-4 that a Connecticut city could condemn the homes of its residents to give the land to a pharmaceutical manufacturer. The city claims the business will generate more tax revenue than the average citizens who currently own the property. What would we do without government elites to set our priorities straight?

Taking property is bad economics

07/11/05

Private property is a cornerstone of capitalism. The protection of property rights is essential to our free enterprise system's efficient operation. When that protection is weakened, negative economic consequences invariably follow. In the well-publicized case of Kelo v. New London, the Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision ruled a local government can take private property for private economic development when it believes the taking will benefit the public. The court upheld the city's seizure of privately owned properties and the real estate's transfer to private developers to build a hotel, offices and conference center. The expected public benefits, according to the city government, were increased tax revenues and jobs, though the proposed development's financial success was uncertain...

In a weekend posting I asked if it was time to get ready for the Karl Rove frog-march. The question was prompted by a Newsweek article by reporter Michael Isikoff that disclosed the first documentary evidence showing that Rove revealed to a reporter that former Ambassador Joseph Wilson's wife worked at the CIA. In a July 11, 2003, e-mail that Time magazine reporter Matt Cooper sent to his bureau chief, Cooper noted he had spoken to Rove on 'double super secret background' and that Rove had told him that Wilson's 'wife ... apparently works at the agency on wmd issues.' 'Agency' means CIA. This is not good news for Rove and the White House...

"Home" is now London

07/08/05

Suffice it to say, we have been told by the leaders of the 'coalition of the willing' that 'we' have to 'take the war to the terrorists' and fight 'over there' so that 'we' don't have to face death and destruction 'over here.' Or as President Bush put it: 'Either we take the war to the terrorists and fight them where they are ... or at some point we will have to fight them here at home.' Well, 'home' is now London. And fighting terrorists 'where they are' does nothing to stem the tide of their ever-increasing numbers...

Is Karl Rove screwed, or not?

A week ago, what Karl Rove may have done to expose the identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame was just another gone-nowhere, 2-year-old, dusty Bush scandal on the shelf, relegated to languish among the lies that got us into the war in Iraq and the doctored FDA reports that suppressed the risks of Big Pharma's moneymakers. Today, What Karl Rove Said is the story. And there's every indication that for the first time, he is in deep s--t. That's really what everyone wants to confirm: Is Karl Rove screwed, or not? And luckily for us, for the first time he's going to have to answer some questions on terms other than his...

What some don't get about terrorism

Any time a terrorist attack occurs, a great many people wring their hands trying to figue out just what is amiss with such barbaric conduct. Be it an IRA, Palestinian or radical Muslim (suicide) attack, there is the usual acknowledgement that terrorism is horrible and the people doing it are over the top, but then the focus turns to whatever is supposed to have provoked it -- usually George W. Bush and his predecessors' foreign policy measures. And some of this, of course, isn't beside the point in making sense of certain of these events. Yet this focus on provocations misses the must basic issue, which is that terrorists lack the most elementary traits of civilization, which is to treat individuals as individuals, as sovereign, self-directed agents who aren't responsible for the misdeeds of their fellow human beings." [editor's note: And precisely how are state actions which kill undifferentiated masses of people -- wars, for example -- any different in principle? - TLK]

Turd blossom must go

07/11/05

It's possible, even likely, that Rove didn't know Plame was undercover. But that distinction is relevant only to the question of whether Patrick Fitzgerald should prosecute Rove under the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982, which requires that a covert agent be exposed 'intentionally.' For a White House official to be so reckless as to reveal, even unknowingly, the identity of an undercover CIA employee is a firing offense. Period. That Rove did so for the purpose of smearing a political enemy makes the whole episode even more distasteful. He's outta there...

What has been done

The 1980 publication of Milton Friedman's 'Free to Choose' helped usher in a period of privatization and deregulation. The tide turned toward freedom, and the market worked its magic. Planned economies collapsed, and the world embraced the benefits of capitalism. After the attacks of 9/11, however, the tide turned again. Benjamin Franklin once famously said that those who prefer security to freedom will wind up with neither. Americans have proven the accuracy of his warning by disregarding it... Smelling like a Rove

07/12/05

Karl Rove, George W. Bush's chief political strategist, has not been having an especially happy second term. His boss's political fortunes are in the dumps, and nothing Rove plans -- the Terri Schiavo fight, or the Social Security whistle-stop tour, or the President's recent prime-time speech, offering more non-answers on Iraq -- has righted Bush's sinking ship. Now Rove himself has the law breathing down his neck... [subscription or ad view required]

The most important argument against the draft

07/11/05

Many Americans fall back on utilitarian arguments against the draft, saying it's unnecessary or ineffective in defending America or engaging in foreign interventions. These arguments might very well be sound, and have their place. But the most important, fundamental argument against the draft is moral. The draft is a form of slavery. There is no way around it. Compelling a person to work for the state is involuntary servitude. Forcing a person to fight, kill, and possibly die in a war -- and threatening resisters with imprisonment and deserting conscripts with death -- is a particularly immoral brand of enslavement, and it is murder for all conscripts who do not survive the war...

Slavery in the service of liberty

07/11/05

At first glance, it seems unlikely that Americans would stand for a draft. A recent poll put the 'Hell no!' factor at 85 percent. A quick scan of the Web reveals organized opposition to conscription from all directions. Donald Rumsfeld and George Bush insist that they would never even think about it. Donald Rumsfeld says he prefers what the job requires -- a light, fast, high tech, all volunteer force -- and that a conscript army would be wholly undesirable and unnecessary. Rumsfeld says a lot of things. ... The bombing of London proves the 'War on Terror,' and especially its subsidiary invasion of Iraq, to be a complete failure of an unjust war. As this reality dawns on America, folks are telling their kids not to enlist. That is why Selective Service has been gearing up. But don't worry. They say their plan is to enslave only specialists first. So if you know how to fly a helicopter, diagnose software glitches, or stitch wounds, that means you...
