Whales at risk for "scientific reasons"

Hundreds of whales could be killed this year from "scientific whaling." We have a way for you to take action and discuss this important issue.

1. More than 1,400 whales expected to be killed this year
http://www.care2.com/go/z/17945

Over 20,000 whales have been killed since commercial whaling was banned by the International Whaling Commission in 1986. How? Partly because a loophole allows any nation to issue itself a permit to kill any number of whales "for the purposes of scientific research" and sell the whale meat in supermarkets later!

Some nations, like Japan, continue to expand their programs of "scientific" killing. Only 11% of Japanese adults support the killings, and so Japan has invested in a public relations offensive to convince the public that whaling is culturally and economically important to Japan and that whales eat too many fish and threaten the conservation of fish stocks - a claim for which there is no scientific basis. Take action today:

Election 2004 Global Warming Challenge

In a couple weeks, Americans will head to the polls. But despite mounting evidence that global warming is happening, voters hear very little on the issue from candidates running for office.

Enough is enough! On global warming, America's voters deserve more. Send a message to candidates - Democrats and Republicans, challengers and incumbents - challenging them to talk about global warming as they campaign for office. Take action:

Xerox workers to strike over satellite tracking plan

Just one more step towards 'Big Brother'

Over 250 Xerox workers will go on strike this morning over plans to use global positioning system technology (GPS) to track them throughout their day. Australian Services Union president Sally McManus says the proposal affects workers who repair Xerox photocopiers and other equipment in offices around Melbourne and Sydney. Ms McManus says most technicians use their cars as an office and their daily movements are already monitored heavily by the company. She says being monitored by satellite GPS technology is excessive. "That will continually monitor and check where they are," she said.

"We say that Xerox technicians are already highly monitored and their work performance can be measured in every which way and that this is just one more step towards 'Big Brother' that the members, the workers, aren't prepared to take."

New generator could power non-lethal microwave weapon

The Air Force expects planes will be able to fire non-lethal microwave rays at enemy ground troops with the help of a new superconducting generator system developed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base after about 25 years of research. Heavy, inefficient generators have been a hurdle to the development of airborne microwave weapons, which create a disabling burning sensation. Microwaves could be used to control large groups of enemy fighters without killing them or disable electronics-dependent enemy weapons, said Philip Coyle, senior adviser for the Center for Defense Information.

The Air Force is preparing to award a $22 million contract to a private contractor to construct and demonstrate the new electrical generating system by 2009.

Privacy watchdog condemns US Visit

System is actually going to endanger security

German researchers have already shown that it is possible to fool the system

The United States' new biometric system of border controls violates civil rights without delivering security, the head of the London-based civil liberties watchdog Privacy International has warned. The system involves a "wholesale and aggressive violation" of privacy but was also likely to generate errors and eventually collapse under its own weight, Privacy International director Simon Davies said. Davies was speaking after the release of a critical report on the US Visitor & Immigration Status Indication Technology System (US-Visit) prepared by Privacy International and published a day after the system, which began operating in January, was extended to cover the citizens of 27 "visa waiver" countries - including the UK. Germany, and Japan - whose populations are considered to be "friendly". Under the system, supplied to the Department of Homeland Security by the technology services company Accenture, visitors have their photograph taken and undergo two digital index-finger scans before they can pass through immigration controls.

The extension of US-Visit to the visa waiver countries had gone smoothly, US officials said, but Davies warned of future problems.

Spychips off the Orwellian block

Do we want our old-fashioned, wonderful privacy, or will we accept the Star Wars concepts of allowing "Big Brother," whoever he may be, know everything about us? The use of this George Orwell "1984" technology may even cut prices and provide us with more choices.

An RFID chip can be read from a distance, right through your clothes, wallet, backpack or purse - without your knowing. This is all that is needed to identify the clothes you are wearing or the groceries that you are carrying and the credit card you used. RFID chips can't be laundered out of clothing; don't wear out with time and can be well hidden. They can be sewn into the seams of clothing, molded into plastic or rubber and can even be printed. This means that the dot on a printed letter "i" can be linked to a skinny, nearly invisible antenna printed on a product label. And, then a tracker with access to a RFID reader can say, "Got'cha!" But there are plenty of nightmare scenarios. Future divorce cases may involve one party using RFID logs to prove a spouse was in a certain location at a certain time. And, future burglars could use a reader on discarded packaging that might indicate expensive electronic equipment was at an address ready to be stolen. But, another good use for RFIDs has been developed in Japan, where all the children in some primary schools are being tagged. The kid arrives at school, his clothing is tagged and readers at the door and in other key locations will keep track of him. No more kids going walkabout or astray in that school.

The "War on Terror" as Defined by 1984's Emmanuel Goldstein

There is an interesting article titled “The "War on Terror" as Defined by 1984's Emmanuel Goldstein”. It contains extracts from the book “1984” by George Orwell, and “Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism” (i.e. Government by a few). It is located at http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/orwell_goldstein_1984.html

Many of the techniques described seem very similar to those currently used. The excerpt below is particularly interesting, and is very close to Bush’s behavior (have they been reading Orwell’s book?) :

"The essential act of the Party is to use conscious deception while retaining the firmness of purpose that goes with complete honesty. To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies, all this is indispensibly necessary."

Bad Forest Riders Still Loom

Congress Adjourns, Bad Forest Riders Still Loom

Congress has headed home to campaign and will return after the election for a lame-duck session that will likely begin on November 16th. Many must-pass spending bills were not completed before Congress left, including the Interior Appropriations bill, which funds the Forest Service. Since Congress did not finish much of their work on appropriations it looks likely that they will combine many of the unfinished spending bills together into one big bill called an omnibus bill. The Interior Appropriations bill could be thrown into this omnibus bill and could contain some bad forest riders, which need to be stopped. Although we will likely have to mobilize in November to stop many riders in the lame-duck session we also need to act now.

Right now congressional staff have stared working on the unfinished appropriations bills, including the Interior Appropriations bill. For the next couple of weeks they will be putting a draft omnibus bill together. Since congressional staff are drafting portions of the omnibus bill now, we have to make calls in order to keep the pressure up as so bad forest riders stay off the omnibus bill.

TAKE ACTION: Please call your Senators and Representative's DC offices at 1-202-224-3121 (capitol switchboard). Ask for the staff that works on National Forest/Environmental issues. Tell them that you:

1. Oppose efforts by Senator Gordon Smith to attach his Lawless Logging Rider on the omnibus spending bill. The rider will override existing environmental laws and prohibit judicial review to promote the largest public lands logging project in modern history - the Biscuit post-fire logging project on the Siskiyou National Forest. This rider is intended to override the current judicial process that is underway by stripping away all forest and river protection laws for the Siskiyou Wild Rivers Area in Southern Oregon and slamming shut the courtroom doors to citizens, leaving roadless areas, ancient forest reserves, wild and scenic rivers and salmon runs at risk of being destroyed by logging and roadbuilding.

2. Oppose Senator Stevens' Tongass Judicial Review Rider. The rider interferes with judicial review of logging projects in the Tongass National Forest by telling judges they only have 180 days from the filing date to decide lawsuits challenging logging projects in the Tongass. The rider also attempts to completely cut off the public's ability to challenge projects if they cannot file lawsuits on Tongass logging projects within 30 days of the Forest Service's decision to go ahead with them.

3. Oppose Efforts to waive environmental review of grazing permits on public lands. The Senate Interior bill attempts to categorically exclude the renewal of grazing permits for many grazing allotments in National Forests from environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The rider seeks to exclude the public from participating in important decisions about how public lands are managed, even though current grazing practices can degrade lands, cause water pollution and imperil plant and animal species.

Something's on the march, alright, but it isn't freedom: it's fanaticism fueled by a dangerous theology, and a mortal threat to the peace of the world. Such rhetoric is meant to fire up his core constituency -- snake-handling holy-rollin' Bible Belters and neocons alike -- who see the American State as the instrument of God's Will on earth. Flipping out over Patriot Act

Why has such a 'hard-core conservative' joined the 'ultra-liberal' ACLU? Because he sees the Patriot Act and its legislative progeny as dangerous to America. KMK-Rechtschreibrat: Kritiker unerwünscht

DEUTSCHE SPRACHWELT
http://www.deutsche-sprachwelt.de

- PRESSEMITTEILUNG -

KMK-Rechtschreibrat: Kritiker unerwünscht

Erlangen, 15.

Automatisierter Abruf erfolgt heimlich

Army Says Up to 28 G.I.'s Could Face Afghan Abuse Charges

According to the news article below, the torture scandal at Abu Ghraib has deep roots in the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan. One allegation claims men were "chained to the ceiling - one at the waist and one by the wrists - although their feet remained on the ground." If the alegation is true, then the torture, rape, murder, and abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan are systemic. That means the problem isn't a few rotten apples; rather, the problem stems from poor leadership.

Without a strategy to deal with the root causes of terror, we're simply ensuring more bombs, more beheadings and more American barbarism in response.

Demand Truth About the Draft

Last week the Los Angeles Times became the latest major newspaper to print an article about the potential for a draft in the near future. Like many other reports it cited "rumors" about a secret plan to reinstate the draft.

That's exactly what they are: rumors. And focusing on bogus rumors clouds the fundamental issue. The question is not whether some secret plan is in motion. The question being raised is: how will we protect the homeland, address growing threats around the world, and achieve stability in Iraq with an already overstretched military?

These valid concerns are ones I share with my friends and colleagues at the Campaign for America's Future -- Robert Borosage and Roger Hickey. Like many of you, we think it's important to clarify what's really at issue here, and actively weigh in to demand straight answers.

In less than a week, more than 60,000 people have signed this petition asking for the answers. Join us now:

http://action.ourfuture.org/ctt.asp?u=1742757&l=62726

The facts are clear: Gen. Shinseki testified before Congress that we would need at least 50,000 more troops to stabilize Iraq. The Army admits it has been stretched thin. The flagrant misuse of the National Guard and Reserves has made recruiting harder and leaves our homeland unprotected.

More and more people have realized that a quiet draft has already begun. Active duty soldiers who finish their commitments are being forced to stay on. We have begun calling up forces like the Individual Ready Reserves, consisting of older reservists who have not been on active duty and have not trained for some time. And there's no end in sight.

Americans have a right to know -- before Election Day -- how we will meet our current commitments without resorting to a draft. Sign the petition now -- we will deliver our questions to the White House and demand honest answers:

http://action.ourfuture.org/ctt.asp?u=1742757&l=62726

We have been misled about this war from the beginning. They said Iraq had nuclear weapons -- that was false. They said the whole war would cost a few billion dollars -- in reality, we spend several billion dollars every month. They say things are getting better, but every month brings more casualties than the last.

Now, in the weeks before an election, they say we won't need a draft. We cannot afford to take their word for it. We must demand answers:

http://action.ourfuture.org/ctt.asp?u=1742757&l=62726

Thank you,

Governor Howard Dean, M.D.

P.S. Here are some things people who have signed the petition are saying:

"As a young American who cares deeply about my country, I deserve to know if a draft will be put into effect. If not, how do you plan to fill the troop commitments necessary for success?"
--Ajay N.

"I have heard so many things over the years from politicians that have not been true that I no longer take anything for granted. I don't see how the country can continue under the present commitments of our armed forces with a complete volunteer military. If the intention is to bring back the draft I would like to know now and not after the presidential election. An informed voter is an intelligent voter."
--Charles M.

"Staying the course means we're going to need more troops in our go-it-alone strategy. How will we get them?"
--Carl T.

"A feasible, realistic plan needs to developed, shared with the American public and put in place to bring peace in Iraq and end American occupation of the territory. Can this be done without instituting a military draft? The American people want to know before the 2004 presidential election."
--Sharon S.

"Our forces are stretched thin and the situation in Iraq is getting worse. We will no doubt be there a long time and other troubles lurk on the horizon. Be honest with America and tell us how we are going to do this without the draft."
--Phil S.

"My wife and I have deep concerns about this issue. We've been through the Vietnam years and saw how the draft split this country in half. We don't want to have to relive our worst nightmares, not with our sons."
--Lance K.

"A straight and clear answer, please."
--Janice M.

Babylon a go-go

The Christian nerd factor for this particular war in Iraq has been higher than usual, and for obvious reasons. One, it is being waged for no obvious reason, making it fertile ground for all sorts of wild scriptural speculation -- just about anything you want to dream up, even the idea that Saddam Hussein is the antichrist[,] makes more sense than the actual justification for the war given by the government. Two, our occupation of Iraq is, or at least has evolved into, a confrontation with Islam. Three, it is led on our side by a Christian. Four, it is taking place in the site of ancient Babylon, a territory with no small significance in the Armageddon story...

Bush's Great Mistakes

It's not easy being the president. And no one likes to admit mistakes. But it is dangerous when a president simply denies reality. In last night's debate, the president smiled and ducked, but revealed once more that he can't see what's going on, won't admit that his policies have failed, and promises us only more of the same.

Whether it's on jobs, health care or Iraq, the president's primary strategy is to paint deceptively rosy pictures, hope the American public buys them, and offer only to stay the failed course.

Help set the record straight, expose the mistakes, and build the groundswell needed to usher in new solutions:

http://action.ourfuture.org/ctt.asp?u=1742757&l=62645

Snap polls after the debate showed that the public generally thought Senator Kerry was more in tune with their values. Broad majorities support a dramatic change in direction. But of course the right-wing chorus at Fox News and elsewhere immediately started proclaiming Bush the victor.

Let's make sure they don't get away with distorting reality. Join us in talking straight about Bush's record of failure. We'll connect you -- using your zip code -- to your local and national news editors so that you can tell them directly: "I want to hear the straight story!"

http://action.ourfuture.org/ctt.asp?u=1742757&l=62645

As the debates have made clear, Bush is desperately trying to hide his record of stark failure. We can prevent him from side-stepping some of his worst:

- On jobs and the economy: The president's budget-busting tax cuts failed to generate jobs. He will be the first president since Herbert Hoover to have ended his four years with net job losses.

- On education: The president broke his promise to "provide the resources necessary," for No Child Left Behind, cutting more than $26 billion from the funds he agreed were needed to fullfill the bill's goals. He also broke his campaign promise to raise the level of Pell college tuition grants even as college costs soared at double-digit rates.

- On healthcare: President Bush did nothing as costs sky-rocketed and four million more Americans fell into the ranks of the uninsured. Worse, in a sellout to the drug companies, his prescription drug bill actually prohibits Medicare from negotiating a better price for seniors.

Join with us to make sure these and other clear mistakes get the scrutiny they deserve. Help expose the mistakes so that more and more people know exactly where changes in direction are most needed. In the last days of the presidential campaign, the attack ads and political posturing will reach a new climax. Each of us can make sure that a little straight talk pierces the fog. Please make your voice heard.

http://action.ourfuture.org/ctt.asp?u=1742757&l=62645

IAFF Firefighters RF Health Study

The International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) has passed a resolution opposing the use of fire stations for cellular antenna site locations until such installations are proven not to be hazardous. The IAFF called for an initial study to determine if the health of firefighters who work in stations with cell towers on the station property has been adversely affected.

Also, here's an excerpt from a recent press release which indicates the type of ES symptoms some firefighters are experiencing after having cell towers located on their stations:

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF FIREFIGHTERS (IAFF) VOTES TO STUDY HEALTH EFFECTS OF CELL TOWERS ON FIRE STATIONS

Call for Moratorium on New Cell Towers on Fire Stations Until Health Effects Can Be Studied

Boston, MA – August 24, 2004 – Firefighters returned to their home stations throughout the United States and Canada following last week's IAFF convention after passing a resolution to study the health
effects of cell towers placed on the fire stations where they work and live. Added to the resolution was an amendment calling for the IAFF to support a moratorium on the placement of new cell towers on fire stations until the completion of the study.

A recent pilot study of six California firefighters, first publicly revealed at the IAFF convention by medical writer and study organizer Susan Foster Ambrose of San Diego, CA, raises concern about the safety of fire fighters working and sleeping in stations with towers.

The study, conducted by Dr. Gunnar Heuser of Agoura Hills, CA, focused on neurological symptoms of six firefighters who had been working for up to five years in stations with cell towers. Those symptoms included slowed reaction time, lack of focus, lack of impulse control, severe headaches, anesthesia-like sleep, sleep deprivation, depression, and tremors.

Dr. Heuser, along with Dr. J. Michael Uszler of Santa Monica, CA, used functional brain scans - SPECT scans - to assess any changes in the brains of the six firefighters as compared to healthy brains of men of the same age. Computerized psychological testing known as TOVA was used to study reaction time, impulse control, and attention span.

Disturbingly, the SPECT scans revealed a pattern of abnormal change which was concentrated over a wider area than would normally be seen in brains of individuals exposed to toxic inhalation, as might be expected from fighting fires. Dr. Heuser indicated the only plausible explanation at this time would be RF radiation exposure. Additionally, the TOVA testing revealed among the six firefighters delayed reaction time, lack of impulse control, and difficulty in maintaining mental focus.

Because of increasing complaints among firefighters with cellular antennas on their stations coupled with the California study showing damage among the six firefighters tested, a group of five individuals spread across two provinces and three states worked with Southern California firefighters to draft the resolution put before the IAFF membership last week. Lt. Ron Cronin and Acting Lt. Joe Foster were joined by Dr. Magda Havas of Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, Vermont-based Janet Newton - president of the EMR Policy Institute, and Susan Foster Ambrose.

IZGMF: Kommentar zur Interphone-Studie

FGF-Infoline vom 21.10.2004

Winning Protection for Glaciers and Grizzlies

#113 WILD NORTHWEST, October 12, 2004
A Message from Northwest Ecosystem Alliance
=====Keeping the Northwest Wild=====

Winning Protection for Glaciers and Grizzlies
Call now to oppose the proposed Jumbo Glacier resort in British Columbia

The 13-year-long battle to protect Jumbo Glacier in B.C.’s Columbia Mountains has come to a head. Purcell Mountain grizzly bears, dazzling glaciers, wildflower meadows in summer, and untracked powder in winter, all are threatened by a $450 million ski resort. Add your voice to the nearly 24,000 letters in opposition already sent to the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office through the Jumbo Wild action center. The cornerstone of British Columbia’s growing economy is tourism, and it is wilderness that draws tourists, including American tourists. Urge the government to keep Jumbo Glacier wild. Tell them to support instead investment in existing Canadian resort towns such as Fernie, Kimberly, and Invermere -- not destruction of pristine areas.

Call BC Premier Gordon Campbell by October 18. Ask that he side with the glaciers and grizzly bears and against this Jumbo resort.

Toll-free in B.C.: 1-800-663-7867
Outside B.C.: 1-604-660-2421

Media attention on Jumbo has ramped up considerably. At the recent international Living Lakes Conference, members from 20 countries voted unanimously to urge the government to deny approval of the Jumbo Glacier resort. The world is watching closely as the B.C. government prepares a decision.

Cell Phone Recycling Mandatory

If arsenic in cell phones can pollute then surely banning cca wood and dealing with the waste problem is far more essential. There is enough arsenic in one 12 by 2 by 6 to kill 250 people. We have millions of board feet leaching out there. Take care everybody and please keep safe.

Governor Signs Bill Making Cell Phone Recycling Mandatory

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed legislation making California the first state to require cellular phone stores to recycle old phones.

According to the provisions of the Cell Phone Recycling Act, as of July 1, 2006, it will be illegal for a retailer to offer cell phones for sale unless the recycling service is offered.

Advocates for the new law say it could create a thriving industry for used and refurbished cell phones similar to those that already exist in Latin America in Asia.

Although a few retailers already offer recycling services, more than 95 percent of old cell phones eventually wind up in landfills. According to the authors of the bill, toxins such as arsenic, lead and mercury can leach out of circuit boards on discarded cell phones, fouling soil and water.

Workshop on Biological Effects of EMF, Kos, Greece

Enclosed some impressions from this workshop. This is not a report. However, if you wish some particular information on a certain presentation, you are wellcome to contact me.

Kind regards

Sianette Kwee

3rd International Workshop on Biological effects of EMFs, Kos, Greece, 4-8 October 2004

“Negative and No effects” was the order of this meeting , so another step backwards. It almost looked like a conspiracy.

The Australian Centre for Radiofrequency Bioeffects Research was strongly represented with in vitro and in vivo RF studies, all supported by Telstra and Motorola, who also handled their exposure systems.

Among others, they had one (#B6:4) that was to be a replication of the Salford group’s work on BBB and dark neurons. They did not find any effects. Their experiment was run during a much shorter time and when asked how many mice they had used, the answer was: 6. The Salford group used hundreds of mice!

From the Salford group new results were reported (#A9:1), which showed that even after 50 days there was no change in the number of dark neurons in the 136 mice. Actually a group in Bordeaux, France got the same positive results as in the Salford’s study. However, this study was not allowed to be published and the scientist who did the work has disappeared.

Another Australian study was on human cells and heat-shock proteins (#B2:4). No change in transcription level or trace of the heat-shock protein was found. When asked how many experiments were done, the answer was: 1. Actually one more experiment was done, but since this showed a positive result, it was discarded as a false positive and was not mentioned at all. This group has now received funds to replicate my studies within one year.

However, we never did less than 20-30 independent experiments!

De Pomerai tried very hard to explain the mistakes in his first studies on the worms that gave positive effects. I almost felt sorry for him. It gave the impression, that he made experimental mistakes of the most elementary kind (controls, shams, exposure calculations etc.) or that editorial committees from the journals where he published these articles, among them the prestigious Nature, had been fast asleep while refereeing. He presented some new negative results, some hardly relevant. These resulted in a sarcastic question from Adlkofer (REFLEX), whether he had switched on the exposure apparatus!

These are just a few examples, but enough to show a very depressing trend in EMF science. It makes one feel sad to see what they have done to science. They have come a far way from the original intention, that a scientific study is something one is completely committed to, morally as well, and that it becomes almost part of oneself.

Indeed industry has corrupted science in cooperation with a coalition of willing scientists.

As Repacholi mentioned in his update on WHO EMF projects (#PLII:1): replication studies are recommended, but they need not be an exact replication of the original study.

In other words, they may be changed so as to fit a desired result?

Anyway who would like to have their work replicated by a bunch of amateurs.

The REFLEX report has still not been published officially and the reason is that industry is trying to prevent it.

Motorola was actively represented by a younger edition, but with the same viewpoints.

Poland, as one of the countries that recently has joined the EU, has now to change their safety limits. Their original safety limits were much stricter than EU’s ICNIRP limits, so for them it is also a step backwards.

SAR is getting a growing number og opponents and is considered as useless by many. Actually it is based on electrical fields and not on magnetic fields. Proposals for other ways to measure and express exposure were proposed e.g. Poland (#A7:1).

The Melatonin theory was also disproved (#PLI:3). It only applies to mice and not to man. Probably because mice are nocturnal animals was the explanation.

In trying to find a mechanism for the effects of EMF and non-thermal effects, it has now become politically correct again to talk about “Windows” (#PLI:1). Other explanations were cooperativity, like the one used for the allosteric enzyme mechanism (#PLIII:1).

However, I think we should rather turn to Kaiser (Germany) as the expert.

Fortunately not all was as dark. The posters showed many positive and interesting results, among them many in vivo experiments. Probably because these are mostly from younger scientists, not yet biased. Of course there were also a number of negative replications, but one has to be aware of who is behind these studies.

A Spanish poster was a about a patented device(#58) that could protect the brain against RF, as measured by recording of the 4 brainwaves. This was very similar to the Klieesens study some years earlier. This project was supported by Siemens. Some time ago one of Siemens’ directors in Germany said to a Danish newspaper, that if mobile phones really proved to have negative health effects, Siemens was ready to pull out of the mobile phone market.

After all it was not their main product. However, this is not the case for companies like Motorola, Nokia etc. They have all reasons to stick to their only product and use all means to buy influence in the appropriate places.

The full program for this workshop can be seen at http://imm.demokritos.gr/bioeffects04/Program/program.html
but unfortunately not the Abstracts. However, Abstracts do not always tell the real story.

EMF and Health

The Karolinska Inst. in Stockholm held a press conference yesterday 13 Oct 2004)on the effects of NMT mobil telephone use in a group of Swedes who have used the older NMT system (=Nordic Mobile Telephon by system) for more than 10 years. The study did not address GPS or GPRS phones. According to the Danish press "people who have used bilile phones over 10 years have nearly double the risk for developing tumors on the hearing nerves".

I enclose the pre-pub article from Dr. Fechting which was published on PubMed this week, and the press release in Swedish. I have queried them about more details, and will post them as they become available.

The subject group consisted of 150 people, who had tumors in the cochlear nerves, and the control group consisted of 600 people. Considering the population of Sweden is over 8 million, this is a very small subject group!

Electric and magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the modern society, and concerns have been expressed regarding possible adverse effects of these exposures. This review covers epidemiologic research on health effects of exposures to static, extremely low-frequency (ELF), and radio frequency (RF) fields. Research on ELF fields has been performed for more than two decades, and the methodology and quality of studies have improved over time. Studies have consistently shown increased risk for childhood leukemia associated with ELF magnetic fields, whereas ELF fields most likely are not a risk factor for breast cancer and cardiovascular disease. There are still inadequate data for other outcomes. More recently, focus has shifted toward RF exposures from mobile telephony. There are no persuasive data suggesting a health risk, but this research field is still immature with regard to the quantity and quality of available data. This technology is constantly changing and there is a need for continued research on this issue. Almost no epidemiologic data are available for static fields. Expected online publication date for the Annual Review of Public Health Volume 26 is March 17, 2005. Please see

estimates.

Bush Wired ?

http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/october2004/131004bushwired.htm

The American people must know about the probability that Bush was wired and therefore probably cheated during the first Presidential debate. If true, it speaks volumes of the character of this President. The person who put this image together used simple techniques with commercial software used by amateur as well as professional photographers the world over. This person encourages others to reproduce the enhancements and to improve on them by using better quality video, and averaging more frames.

What Bush says....

"I'm the commander - see, I don't need to explain - I do not need to explain why I say things. That's the interesting thing about being the president. Maybe somebody needs to explain to me why they say something, but I don't feel like I owe anybody an explanation."

FATE OF SOUTH AFRICA’S ELEPHANTS HANGS IN THE BALANCE

FATE OF SOUTH AFRICA’S ELEPHANTS HANGS IN THE BALANCE

PRESS ADVISORY: 14 October 2004. From Justice for Animals and Xwe African Wild Life

Once again the shadow of death hangs over the elephant clans in the Kruger National Park (KNP). Their future will be decided at an Indaba to be held in the Park from the 19-21 October. Two South African animal rights groups, Justice for Animals and Xwe African Wild Life, have joined forces to oppose the reintroduction of ‘culling’ on ethical and ecological grounds and they have the support of a number of prominent animal welfare and animal rights organisations across the globe.

The apartheid government, as beneficiaries of the lucrative but cruel ivory trade, killed elephants in the Kruger National Park relentlessly, and uninterrogated science was used to back up their dubious culling practices. After 1994, this killing culture and its scientific validity were brought into question by a South African animal rights organisation, FALCON (now Justice for Animals), and, as a result, the government placed a moratorium on the ‘culling’ of elephants in the KNP.

Some conservationists are now claiming that the KNP elephant population is exceeding the park’s carrying capacity. Moreover, renewed pressure from the consumptive use lobby - including the international trophy hunting lobby - that believes an elephant’s worth lies only in its economic value to human beings, is now threatening this moratorium.

"Justice for Animals (JA) and Xwe are totally opposed to the reintroduction of ‘culling’ as part of the South African National Parks (SANParks) elephant management plan. JA Chairperson, Steve Smit said: "Extensive research has shown that elephants are highly evolved, intelligent animals with complex social and emotional lives. Killing them as part of a management plan is both cruel and unethical".

Animal rights groups maintain that should a situation arise where it is shown on valid scientific grounds that the elephant population in the KNP, or any other conservation area, is having an unnaturally destructive effect on the environment, then various alternatives to culling should be employed. Such alternatives include the relocation of animals within trans-frontier parks, translocation to other parks, and now the promising option of using immuno-contraception to control elephant population numbers.

To make matters worse, there is no empirical evidence that elephants are causing excessive damage to the vegetation in sensitive areas in the KNP. But this is the main reason presented by SANParks for now considering ‘culling’ as an option to limit the number of elephants in the park. Smit said that, "JA and Xwe would challenge, on scientific grounds, any assertion by SANParks that the elephant population of the KNP is too high and necessitates reduction."

There are more insidious reasons, however, why ‘culling’ is being considered, namely: South Africa is the main proponent in Africa for reopening of the ivory trade and one way to undermine the ban is through the stockpiling of so-called "legal" ivory as a by-product of culling; and there is also unremitting pressure from trophy hunters to kill large-tusked bulls in the KNP. Instead of being havens for the protection of our natural heritage, SANParks may render our natural parks havens for the exploitation of animals by hunters and commercial interests.

Michele Pickover, Chairperson of Xwe African Wildlife said: "South Africa has a history of resorting to violence as a means of solving problems. So when it comes to the issue of elephant management in national parks there is a lot of pressure on authorities by vested interest groups who want to see elephants killed for selfish purposes. We should resist this pressure and, in our treatment of wildlife, we should strive to embody the more humane values that underpin the new South Africa".

"At the upcoming Indaba", Pickover said, "we intend to present a strong argument against ‘culling’ because we believe it is unnecessary, cruel and ethically indefensible. Killing elephants for fun, profit or socio-political expediency is morally reprehensible and we intend to do everything in our power to protect elephants in the KNP, and elsewhere, from harm."
