http://www.buergerwelle.de/d/doc/gesund/pk-esensibel.htm

Three Open Letters...

As the effort to expose 911 gets more successful, the mainstream media get more hysterical in their opposition. Today we take apart three recent examples, responding to each in that time-honored format -- the "open letter."

Project Acronym: REFLEX

Title: Risk evaluation of potential environmental hazards from
low-energy electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure using sensitive in vitro methods

Subject Index: Environmental Protection; Life Sciences; Medicine, Health; Safety

Objective: Electromagnetic field (EMF) has become a topic of Europe-wide discussion. The latter has created uncertainty regarding possible adverse health effects for both the population and industry. Current research is characterized by conflicting data from epidemiological and animal studies, especially with respect to possible risk of cancer at different sites and neurological disorders. Clearly, mere continuation or replication of research, without introducing innovative concepts, will prolong the uncertainty as to whether EMFS do, or do not, represent a health risk. The results of this joint project, which will investigate molecular and functional responses of living cells to EMFS in vitro by applying state-of-the-art methods of molecular biology and toxicology, are needed urgently for molecular epidemiological studies, which are probably the only path to a reliable risk estimate for possible effects of EMFS on human health. The stakes are high, the public is divided, and extreme rhetoric is flying. So it always is the month before the presidential election. Why? Because of the power of the office, the very existence of which is contrary to any robust notion of freedom. The President of the United States on his sole decision deploys troops anywhere in the world, blockades and embargoes foreign countries, imposes trade tariffs, and engages in election cycle credit inflation. Around the world, he bombs innocent people, launches invasions and deploys weapons of mass destruction...

Liberty is never up for grabs; it must always be taken by force. There are usually costs and even risks to life and limb. Drivers of the Chariot of Independence don't have the luxury of seatbelts or airbags, yet they gladly put their lives on the line in hopes of achieving self-determination. In the heart of a rebel there can be no greater dream and no higher aspiration. The exhilaration of freedom is without peer. Of course, if you or I endeavor to achieve independence we'll be in big trouble. We would attract attention from demented people with large weapons and small brains. So maybe we could just snatch thirty seconds of it then duck for cover instead...

'The diffusion of ideas is propaganda, whether fascist, communist, or democratic,' the great historian Jacques Barzun wrote many years ago. 'The democratic hope has always been to raise the standard of gullibility, to sharpen judgment, to confront opposite propagandas.' The Republican success has been to lower the standard of gullibility, to muddle judgment in the bullying language of fear, to make confronting propaganda seem like an assault on patriotism. Democracy has suffered. It is suffering, and it needs rescuing. The greatest mockery is that this is the party claiming to be spreading democracy abroad and protecting it at home. There may not be absolute truths. But there are absolute crocks, and this is one of them...

It's the obvious political ad that has just been waiting to be made -- a young Iraq war veteran, missing a body part, talking simply and directly to the camera about the sacrifice he made in the service of official lies. The idea didn't come from the Democratic Party, or MoveOn.org, or the Kerry campaign. The new ad is the creation of a group of some 20 Iraq war veterans operating on a shoestring budget. Their organization, Operation Truth, a nonpartisan, nonprofit group of 150 members, is dedicated to elevating the perspective of soldiers and holding elected officials accountable for their policy decisions." "[T]he real affront to reality is that ending terrorism isn't a plan-friendly enterprise. It's not like health care where you create a system of tax credits, institutions and bulk-buying mandates to lower costs. No, fighting terrorism is a combination of principles and competence. The principles are simple: don't negotiate with terrorists, kill them when possible, erase the conditions that allow them to flourish, encourage democracy and transparency, improve America's image in the Arab world, devote the appropriate resources to intercepting their plans and protecting against their attacks, and generally doing what every serious person in every serious speech advocates. That the Republicans are no longer assured of winning the military vote overwhelmingly is perhaps one of the clearest indications that the Bush campaign is in some very big trouble. Mobile Phones Again Linked to Cancer - in this Case specifically to Acoustic Neuromas

Dear Colleague:

A team from the Karolinska Institute headed by Prof. Anders Ahlbom has found that the long-term use of mobile phones may indeed lead to higher rates of cancer --specifically acoustic neuromas.

This important news will be officially released at a press conference in Stockholm tomorrow, Wednesday October 13.

I encourage you to read our complete story which is now posted on our Web site. Simply go to http://www.microwavenews.com.

"Biologically Bizzare"?

It is interesting to note that Prof. Anders Ahlbom who led the study, and who is also an ICNIRP member http://www.icnirp.de/cv.htm , stood behind the quotation that the thought that cell phones might be able to cause brain tumors is "biologically bizzare". (Gunni Nordstrom, "The Invisible Disease".)

I don't think he will say that again.

and

The commercial T.V channel reported yesterday about the new study, and Dr. Sigal Sadezki, the epidemiologist who leads the Israeli arm of the INTERPHONE study said that the findings of benign tumors do not prove that it causes malignant tumors.

It is acually a change that she admits that the phone's radiation actually does something because she used to say that no study is good enough to convince her that there is damage. A year after, she said that it is not proved that there is damage and it is not refuted that there is damage. That was her line until yesterday. In a parliment committe she said some time ago that although she doesn't say there is damage, she cannot ignore the study that was published in the scientific peer reviewed journal [she meant Hardell study] "that found what it found" as she put it, without saying the word cancer.

The cellular companies response was that they have all the approvals.

The two big national newspapers did not write a word about the study today, it is not clear whether they will write something in the coming days. Haaretz newspaper did report it, with small headlines and a short item.

Dr. Savitz urges caution on cell phones and children???

In reference to the last message from Microwave News about the latest cell phone research by the Karolinska Institute take special note of Dr. David Savitz's ill-conceived, and ill thought out attempt to down play the study. Sure to go into his "things I should not have said" file!

After he called the findings "still highly unlikely" he went on to state:

"This uncertainty regarding long-term use should not distract from the growing evidence, enhanced by this study, that neither acoustic neuroma nor brain tumors is associated with cell phone use of less than ten years."

Well, fine - so its okay to give my 12 year old son a cell phone provided I take it off him when he is 21. (?)

If we can take Dr. Savitz at his words then it may be forgivable to assume that he is now advising against selling children cell phones?

David - expect a call from Motorola ASAP!

Best regards,
Lloyd Morgan

I am attaching the full text (unfortunately without the tables and figures) of the acoustic neuroma study from Epidemiology and a David Savitz commentary from the same journal. The highlights are mine. I will obtain the tables and figures, but it will be sometime next week before I can do so.

I believe the most important aspect of this report is that while they have a very strong finding for use of a cellphone for 10 years or more, they also report that cumulative hours of use of cumulative number of uses does not show an increased risk. How could this be?

My interpretation: cellphones are showing the classic latency time from exposure to tumor diagnoses seen with known carcinogens. My concern: the classic latency time is 25 years (2 or 3 decades). If we are seeing such a dramatic effect at 10 years, what will the increased risk show in another 15 years?

It is also well known that the increased risk for children exposed to a known carcinogen (e.g., ionizing radiation) is far larger than adults receiving the same exposure. I am attaching a presentation received from Kjell Hasson-Mild (from BEMS 2004 meeting). It shows a 6 fold risk for 20 years olds, but a more like a 1.5 fold risk for older groups (see slide 7). While this presentation is not statistically strong (at least not to the 95% confidence level) the shape of the graph is quite suggestive of similar cancer data from ionizing radiation.

Finally, I have the number of USA cellphone subscribers in 6-month increments since the inception of cellphones. I did a "what if" calculation. What if cellphones doubled the risk of brain tumors and the latency time is 10 years. This would increase the number of brain tumors by slightly less than 1%. One percent is within the margin of error for incidence rates. In other words, at 10 years, no increase in overall incidence of brain tumors would be detectable. That an increase is being detected implied either that the risk is more than a doubling, or the latency time is less than 10 years or both.

Best regards,

Lloyd Morgan

The Swedish study has finally reached the Danish media. I had several interviews this morning with journalists from radio and newspapers. One from the press bureau Ritzau, the main supplier of news items to Danish media. So it will certainly reached all the other papers. I stressed the danger of mobilphones and children and that more Danish research was necessary on this subject. However, my proposal for such a research project was turned down by the Research grant committee fro Mobilphone research. I also gave them the 2 comments on this list following the information about this study. I also referred to the Leukaemia and Children meeting and the outcome.

To those who understand Danish (=Scandinavians) I will send the Danish newspaper article.

Carlo was appointed in 1993 by the US telecoms industry to allay the fears of mobile phone users through scientific research. Carlo is a public health scientist, epidemiologist and lawyer, so no fly-by-night. In June 1999 he stood up in public and instead announced his findings that mobile phones cause cancer and that no-one should hold one to their head. Ever.

Could you wish for a more competent whistle-blower? Recent studies confirming acoustic neuromas from ten years' use only add to what he said. What emerges from the industry in fighting him, is only repeated in our BBC3 programme with T-Mobile etc. This industry will trash the best scientists, hence what they are doing to Trower, Hyland, Johansson even now. And every would-be whistleblower, and every MTHR scientist knows it too.

Eventually, like our Venezuela surgeons, as with those reporting from Hayward's Heath in Sussex, we will all just "know" in the face of industry denial. Will it stop phones being used so much and start masts coming down? Watch your Christmas TV adverts and tell your friends and family not to use mobile phones. Not so easy is it?

Voter Registrations Possibly Trashed

By George Knapp

KLAS TV, 12 October 2004

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA | Employees of a private voter registration company allege that hundreds, perhaps thousands of voters who may think they are registered will be rudely surprised on election day. The company claims hundreds of registration forms were thrown in the trash.

Anyone who has recently registered or re-registered to vote outside a mall or grocery store or even government building may be affected.

The I-Team has obtained information about an alleged widespread pattern of potential registration fraud aimed at democrats. The focus of the story is a private registration company called Voters Outreach of America, AKA America Votes.

The out-of-state firm has been in Las Vegas for the past few months, registering voters. It employed up to 300 part-time workers and collected hundreds of registrations per day, but former employees of the company say that Voters Outreach of America only wanted Republican registrations.

Two former workers say they personally witnessed company supervisors rip up and trash registration forms signed by Democrats. "We caught her taking Democrats out of my pile, handed them to her assistant and he ripped them up right in front of us. I grabbed some of them out of the garbage and she tells her assisatnt to get those from me," said Eric Russell, former Voters Outreach employee. Eric Russell managed to retrieve a pile of shredded paperwork including signed voter registration forms, all from Democrats. We took them to the Clark County Election Department and confirmed that they had not, in fact, been filed with the county as required by law.

So the people on those forms who think they will be able to vote on Election Day are sadly mistaken. We attempted to speak to Voters Outreach but found that its office has been rented out to someone else.

The landlord says Voters Outreach was evicted for non-payment of rent. Another source said the company has now moved on to Oregon where it is once again registering voters. It's unknown how many registrations may have been tossed out, but another ex-employee told Eyewitness News she had the same suspicions when she worked there.

It's going to take a while to sort all of this out, but the immediate concern for voters is to make sure you really are registered. Call the Clark County Election Department at 455-VOTE or click here to see if you are registered.

The company has been largely, if not entirely funded, by the Republican National Committee. Similar complaints have been received in Reno where the registrar has asked the FBI to investigate.

Men in suits with blood on their hands

Editorial: Men in suits with blood on their hands

SUNDAY , 10 OCTOBER 2004

By SUNDAY STAR-TIMES

So it's official: the Iraq crusade was based on a falsity. Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction, according to the report of the UN weapons inspectors. The leaders of the coalition of the willing, faced with this embarrassing finding, do not even bother to blush. George Bush says Saddam was a bad guy anyway, and we're safer without him. John Howard sees no reason to apologise: but John Howard never apologises for anything. And Tony Blair simply adds more weasel words to the thousands he has already uttered over Iraq. Truth, so the cliche goes, is the first casualty of war, and the war against terror has proved no exception.

New Zealand's decision to stay out of the war is thus vindicated - but being right is not necessarily a political asset. And in this case, being wrong does not seem to be a fatal political liability. There has been a truly global campaign of lies and misinformation over Iraq - and the implications are disturbing. Western voters accept that politicians lie - but this form of dishonesty is unprecedented. The heart of the case against Saddam was WMD. The Bush administration said it "knew" Saddam had them. But it didn't know, any more than Tony Blair "knew" that the Iraqi dictator could launch Armageddon within 45 minutes.

These three leaders took their countries to war on false pretences, and they continue to insist that black is white. Bush says the US is safer now that Saddam has gone. A fair number of US voters appear to believe him - but a fair number still believe, it seems, that Saddam was responsible for September 11. Once again, sober official inquiries seem to have little effect on the debate. When the 9/11 Commission reported it could find no link between Saddam and al Qaeda, Bush continued to insist that there was. He just "knew" it - and here, perhaps, is one of the lessons to be drawn from the whole bloody shambles.

The war against Iraq represents the triumph of conviction over evidence. This is the common factor that unites the "sexing up" of the intelligence data in the US, in Britain and in Australia. The intelligence evidence was thin. Colin Powell's grainy photos, issued just before the war, persuaded nobody except the already persuaded. But what mattered was the deeply held values of Messrs Bush, Blair and Howard. They believed in the war against Saddam: evidence was a secondary consideration. Whether this form of dishonesty is called lying, or excessive fervour, or blindness does not much matter. What matters is the contempt for fact, argument, and thought.

It might be thought that such a comprehensive debunking of the reasons for the crusade would automatically end the careers of the chief crusaders. So why hasn't it happened?

Partly, it seems, because fear crowds out the normal scruples about honesty and accountability. Many Americans feel besieged, and for understandable reasons. Bush has stoked these fears. In such times, many voters turn to the tough-guy leader: how else to account, for example, for the success of the thuggish Ariel Sharon in Israel?

Bush has flouted basic human rights and freedoms in his war against terror - Guantanamo Bay is an international scandal - but his supporters think these are justifiably desperate measures for desperate times. So the scandals continue.

Bush argues that Iraq will somehow, miraculously, turn into a peaceful democracy. The puppet Allawi government continues to insist, in the face of all the evidence, that things in Iraq are improving. In fact, Iraq now suffers a form of civil war. The victims of the slaughter are more often Iraqi than American, but the murder goes on. Nobody but a handful of politicians believes this country could hold a fair and democratic election in just a few months' time. But only the ideologues really believed that democracy could be imposed on this fractured society.

The crusade did not make the world safer. It added fuel to the fire and boosted the terrorist cause. New Zealand has sensibly withdrawn its troops from Iraq. But no country that cares for democracy and decency can avoid the problem of Iraq. Unfortunately, it now looks insoluble. America cannot confer any legitimate authority on Iraq. Even opponents of the war had hoped some form of UN intervention might bring the chance of stability and legitimate government. This now seems impossible: Iraq burns in unquenchable fire. After the crusade, catastrophe.

O2 will Anlagen drauf setzen.

Also warum sollten sie darauf eingehen ?

Prepping For Debate

by Jonathan Tasini

TomPaine.com Exclusive

Here's a handy roadmap to the lies and obfuscations President Bush will be serving up tomorrow night.

http://www.tompaine.com/articles/prepping_for_debate.php

Children’s Health Month in October

The Bush campaign’s spin machine has created another election-year ploy: Children’s Health Month in October

Bush’s Children’s Health Month web site advises parents on how to protect their kids from a dirty environment. How nice. But if President Bush were serious about children’s health, he would clean up the environment by strengthening air pollution laws and controlling toxics like mercury. Instead, he’s repeatedly let polluters off the hook and watered down environmental protections.

The health of our kids is too important to be used as a political prop. If Bush won’t protect our kid’s health, at least he shouldn’t get away with claiming that he is!

This Friday’s presidential debate gives us an important opportunity to hold Bush accountable. Please send an email to George Bush’s campaign, criticizing his environmental record. Call on him to speak at the next debate about how he would improve our children’s health.

"Mobiles Lernen"

Zukünftige Chancengleichheit für Schüler ade?

GEW nennt Finanzierung durch Eltern "skandalös"

Frankfurt · 11.

Feds seize Indymedia servers

[ ... ]

Rackspace UK complied with a legal order and handed over hard disks without first notifying Indymedia. It's unclear if the raid was executed under extra-territorial provisions of US legislation or the UK's Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA). Provisions of RIPA make it a criminal offence to discuss warrants, so Rackspace would not be able to discuss the action with its customer Indymedia, or with the media.

[ ... ]

http://indymedia.org/en/static/fbi

On Thursday, 7 October around 18 GMT two Indymedia servers hosted by Rackspace in the UK went down.

The servers (ahimsa) host the sites of more then 20 local collectives, radio streams for several radio stations, BLAG (a Linux distribution as well as miscellanous other projects.

[ ... ]

The next day, 8 October Rackspace stated that they responded to a "Commissioner's subpoena". "Rackspace is acting as a good corporate citizen and is cooperating with international law enforcement authorities. The court prohibits Rackspace from commenting further on this matter."

[ ... ]

Indymedia failed to get information from authorities in the US and the UK. According to an AFP report, published on 8 October, "the FBI acknowledged that a subpoena had been issued but said it was at the request of Italian and Swiss authorities. 'It is not an FBI operation,' FBI spokesman Joe Parris told AFP." Indymedia could not get direct confirmation of this statements.

[ ... ]

Directly affected Indymedia sites:

The list of affected local media collectives includes Ambazonia, Uruguay, Andorra, Poland, Western Massachusetts, Nice, Nantes, Lilles, Marseille (all France), Euskal Herria (Basque Country), Liege, East and West Vlaanderen, Antwerpen (all Belgium), Belgrade, Portugal, Prague, Galiza, Italy, Brazil, UK, part of the Germany site, and the global Indymedia Radio site.

Infiltrating the U.S. Military

Gen. Boykin’s “Kingdom Warriors” On the Road to Abu Ghraib and Beyond

By Katherine Yurica

First the hard right dominionists took over the Southern Baptist Convention with its 16 million members and a fortune in corporate businesses. Then they took over the Republican Party. Now there is evidence dominionists are trying to take over the U. S. military. The article examines several new questions: Is there a direct connection between the Southern Baptist Convention and Pentecostal churches like John Ashcroft's Assemblies of God to General Boykin, Stephen Cambone and Donald Rumsfeld? Is it true that U.S. taxpayers are paying the seminary bills to educate chaplains who are planning to supplant the U.S. government? Was a chaplain sent to Abu Ghraib to torture prisoners on Rumsfeld's orders? Do not miss this solid article.

Iraq War Veteran's Suicide - He was Swallowed by Pain

The article below is the fifth in a series by the Dayton Daily News detailing the readjustment concerns faced by returning combat veterans. As the Department of Veterans Affairs confirmed last week, VA has no idea of the scope of the problem. And VA doesn't know if it has the resources to assist these veterans.

Mental health care: need and value

Here is an issue that should be front and center during this election: taking care of our soldiers when they return home from war. The Roanoke Times Editorial Board writes, "From Iraq veterans to the uninsured of Western Virginia, the need for and financial benefits of treatment are evident. Yet funding is a challenge."

http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/NewsArticle.cfm?ID=2199

VA Funding Fails to Meet Increased Demand for Services, Groups Say

Oct 11 - In the wake of a July study’s revelation of a "significant risk" of increased mental disorders for soldiers returning from active combat duty in the Middle East, some veterans' groups voiced their concerns that Congress has allocated insufficient funds to effectively address this problem. The July 1 report, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, was the product of a 2003 study by a group of doctors from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.

A son's fallen soldier

The Iraq War comes home. According to Newsday, "Yesterday, Brandon Pettaway, a sixth-grade student at Southampton Intermediate School, buried his dad, Staff Sgt. James L. Pettaway Jr. Pettaway, 37, an Army reservist who lived in Baltimore, died last Sunday at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, of wounds he suffered in Iraq Aug. 27."

http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/NewsArticle.cfm?ID=2198

Families Make Plans to Skip Military Draft

The article below indicates families with teen-aged children are taking the threat of a military draft very seriously. As soldiers are placed on "stop loss" and more Reserve and National Guard are ordered to fight in the deepening quagmire in Iraq, the prospect for forced military conscription of both men and women aged 18 to 34 increases.

http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/NewsArticle.cfm?ID=2197

The military draft and a credibility gap

Young people smell a rat, and now the press smells the odor of misleading statements about the draft. The Roanoke Times Editorial Board says there is a "credibility gap" with the current administration, and that "Talk of a draft won't be silenced by promises from an administration that can't shoot straight." Another interesting fact about this editorial is that is comes from rural Virginia, indicating that Washington's Iraq War policy may be seriously out of touch with middle America.

Steirischer MOBILFUNK Herbst

Powder sucks moisture out of thunderstorm

Copyright © 2001 Nando Media

By AMANDA RIDDLE, Associated Press

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (July 19, 6:51 p.m. PDT) - In its latest test, a powder promoted as a potential way to weaken hurricanes sucked the moisture out of a thunderstorm Thursday.

An airplane dropped $40,000 worth of the Dyn-O-Gel granules into a cloud 10 miles offshore. A television station's weather radar confirmed the cloud then lost moisture.

"The people in the tower visually confirmed that there was a tall buildup and the next moment it was gone," said Kevin Sullivan, control tower supervisor at the Palm Beach International Airport.

The granules, made by a company called Dyn-O-Mat, fell into the ocean as a gel-like substance that dissolves in salt water.

Company chief executive Peter Cordani said he hopes to sell the product to the federal government after more tests. The product is dropped in a line from the outer portion of the hurricane to its eye. The company contends that by dropping moisture out of the swirling mass, the storm is weakened.

The company said a granule absorbs 2,000 times its weight in water.

Hugh Willoughby, hurricane research director at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Miami, was skeptical that the powder could reduce a hurricane's strength by more than a few mph in wind speed.

"It might be that this stuff would be great for making it rain," he said Wednesday.

GREEN CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATES ISSUE A '2004 UNITY STATEMENT'

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Green Party candidates for Congress have issued a 'Green Party 2004 Unity Statement', featuring a list of progressive and ecological positions on vital issues in the 2004 election.

The 27 candidates, organized as the Coordinated Congressional Campaign, address topics that most Republican and Democratic candidates have ignored, including the need for single-payer national health insurance, decisive steps to prevent global warming (such as rejoining the Kyoto agreement), and repeal of the USA Patriot Act.

The statement's call to "Get the U.S. out of Iraq" is consistent with the Green Party's outspoken opposition to the invasion and occupation. The text of the statement is appended below.

430 Green candidates have declared so far in 2004. Greens are running races in 40 States, for 74 different kinds of offices. As of mid September, Green candidates have won 29 elections in 2004.

* * * * *

Vote Green -- Green Party candidates announce the Green Party 2004 Unity Statement to stand together in campaigning for our families, our communities, our nation and our planet. We promise to work for a fair economy, a safe environment, a strong democracy, and a sane foreign policy.

2004 UNITY STATEMENT

GET THE US OUT OF IRAQ

We are squandering the wealth of our nation on war, not in defense of our country but to gain control of the resources of another sovereign nation. Instead of fighting for oil, we need to make the transition to renewable sources of energy. We need to work for peace by cooperative non-violent ways. We need to export the values of the constitution not bullets or bombs.

SECURITY THROUGH PEACE AND JUSTICE

Crimes against humanity must be dealt with swiftly and justly, in accord with international law and without violating or curtailing civil rights.

Peace will be attained through diplomacy, commitment to human rights, and by reducing the gulf between the rich and the poor. The Patriot Act must go, and a Department of Peace must be created. We will end weapons sales to repressive governments, and will demand compliance with UN resolutions as a starting point for peace negotiations.

HEALTH CARE COVERAGE FOR ALL AMERICANS

That so many Americans remain uninsured is intolerable in the most medically and economically advanced nation in the world. An uninsured person is far more likely to die than someone with health care coverage, at any age. The Greens' single payer universal health care plan will not only provide care for all: it will save money and save lives. Provide full funding for, and guarantee access to, all reproductive health and family planning services.

RESTORATION OF DEMOCRACY

Allow a voice for all people, understanding that corporations are not people! Provide public campaign financing and access of third parties to government, by revising election laws and implementing Instant Runoff Voting and Proportional Representation. Enforce the Voting Rights Act; end election fraud.

ENERGY INDEPENDENCE

Turn the tide of global warming and assure a safe, uninterrupted supply of energy by drastically reducing fossil fuel use and supporting production of decentralized, renewable energy sources. Fund the rapid shutdown of nuclear power plants; include funds for retraining displaced workers. Jump-start the renewables market through investment policies. Restore conservation measures, including meaningful automobile fuel efficiency standards.

CORPORATE REFORM

Mandate corporate accountability. End corporate personhood. Get a fair share of taxes from corporations and stop corporate flight to off-shore tax havens. End corporate welfare as we know it. Eliminate trade treaties like GATT, NAFTA, and FTAA: they are abominations that undermine national sovereignty. Implement new treaties that protect communities, business, labor, the environment, and national sovereignty. Require rigorous clinical safety and environmental impact testing of pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.

FAIR TRADE, FAIR LABOR

Abolish slave labor and the corporate practice of paying sub-poverty level wages. Refuse trade where sweatshop or prison labor is involved. Protect workers' right to organize; repeal Taft-Hartley. Reform the tax code to promote sustainable productivity. Tax unearned wealth before income. Develop jobs programs and an inviolable social safety net to protect people during low points in the economic cycle.

PREVENTIVE SOCIAL SPENDING AND POLICIES

End the failed War on Drugs and fund prevention and treatment. Fund public education for all, including vocational and post-secondary schooling. Provide equal opportunity for minorities and women. Abolish the death penalty. Make restitution to historically oppressed groups by providing funding for infrastructure in minority neighborhoods and by committing to eradicating institutionalized racism. Bring back the Equal Rights Amendment. Protect a woman's right to control her own body.

PREVENTIVE FOREIGN SPENDING AND POLICIES

No trillion dollar first-strike space weapons; no more nonfunctioning helicopters. Drastically reduce the military budget, eliminating all expenditures for offensive weapons. Allocate a portion of the savings to relieve debt in developing countries. Commit our funds to humanitarian, not military aid.

SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESSES AND FAMILY FARMS

Rewrite corporate charters. Promote local development in order to ensure long-term economic health. Replace petrochemical-based fertilizers with organics, to protect our water supply from toxic runoffs. Ban use of genetically modified agricultural products.

SURVIVAL OF THE PLANET

Sign the Kyoto protocol, and adhere to it. Strengthen and enforce environmental regulations. Restore the Clean Air Act standards on coal-generating emissions. Fund studies to identify, and eliminate, the environmental causes of cancer. Fully fund the Toxic Waste Superfund through renewed corporate taxation. Ensure the health of the planet for survival's sake, and to ensure the health of human beings today. Outlaw patenting of genetically engineered life forms. Include pollution remediation costs in production costs ("eco-taxing"), and phase out non-sustainable production. Repeal the Price-Anderson Act.
