Lawmakers are drafting proposals that would cut billions of dollars from the growth of Medicaid, slice into student loans just as colleges start back up, pare back food stamps and trim farm price supports in the midst of a Midwestern drought. The raft of bills, due out of 16 committees in the House and Senate by Sept. 16, will hand the Republican Party its toughest test of fiscal austerity in nearly a decade." [editor's note: Isn't it interesting how both major parties participate in the scam of pretending that a reduction in growth is a "cut?" The Democrats whip their base into a frenzy over non-existent cuts; the Republicans go to their base with reductions in growth and pretend that they've reduced spending. Someone wake me up when Congress passes a budget that's actually smaller than the previous year's. I bet I can double Rip Van Winkle's record for continuous napping - TLK]
