More Heat Over Gonzales and Torture
Skirmishing erupted Tuesday over the nomination of Alberto R. Gonzales as attorney general, with Democrats complaining that the White House was withholding memos on his views of prisoner torture, and an unlikely collection of generals and military veterans joining human rights groups in opposition.
A letter was sent to the Senate committee signed by about 3,600 military veterans and family members who opposed Gonzales.
"Torture is not an American value, nor is it a value of the American military," stated the letter, which was organized by groups including Physicians for Social Responsibility, a public health organization whose members include military doctors, and Veterans for Common Sense, an advocacy group.
