Waldschutz: Deutscher Papiergroßhandel ist mitverantwortlich für Umweltzerstörung (23.06.05)

Dem deutschen Papiergroßhandel fehlt es an Umweltbewusstsein und Transparenz. Das ergab eine Markt-Studie, die ROBIN WOOD am Donnerstag veröffentlicht hat. Demnach trifft der Papiergroßhandel bislang nur unzureichende Vorkehrungen, Papier aus Raubbau aus seinem Sortiment auszuschließen. Ökologische und soziale Kriterien spielen in der Praxis kaum eine Rolle. Recyclingpapier und FSC-zertifiziertes Frischfaserpapier wird nur in geringen Mengen angeboten. ROBIN WOOD fordert, dass der Recyclingpapier-Anteil drastisch erhöht wird und der übrige Bedarf mit Papier aus nachweislich ökologisch und sozial verantwortlicher Forstwirtschaft gedeckt wird.

Der Widerstand gegen gentechnisch manipulierten Pflanzen (GMO) ist weiterhin lebendig in Frankreich. Am 16. Juni war's internationaler Tag gegen GMO, zahlreiche Versammlungen fanden in Frankreich statt..

Angefangen hat alles in der 90er, als kleine Gruppen Felder nachts zu mähen anfingen. 2003 folgte dann ein großer Aufruf zu ziviler Ungehorsam...Das „Bündnis der freiwilligen MähenrInnen“ wurde gegründet. Zahlreiche Felder wurden im Sommer 2004 befreit.

Der Staat kündigte starke Repression an. Aktionen wurden gewaltsam verhindert, so dass „Befreiungsaktionen“ mit offenem Gesicht beinahe unmöglich geworden sind und meistens nachts durchgeführt werden.

Gerichtsverfahren wegen gemeinschaftliche Zerstörung wurden gegen die „Köpfe“ der Bewegung eingeleitet und laufen ein Jahr später noch. [...]

Mobilfunkantenne auf dem Dach - Immobilienpreis im Keller?

Bei einer zentralen Informationsveranstaltung der "Umweltinitiative Pfaffenwinkel e.V“ und des Aktionsbündnisses "Volksbegehren Gesundheitsvorsorge Mobilfunk" ist es den Veranstaltern gelungen, drei der profiliertesten und interessantesten Referenten zum Thema Mobilfunk zu gewinnen. Die Veranstaltung findet statt am 04.Juli um 20:OO Uhr in der Gaststätte "Schießstätte", Sebastian-Andre-Weg 4 in Weilheim.

Als erster Referent des Abends wird der Immobiliensachverständige Hubertus v. Medinger, Geschäftsführer der v. Medinger Immobilienbetreuungs GmbH in München, dabei über eine entsprechende Umfrage unter RDM Maklern und seine brisanten Erfahrungen, die er hierzu in Gesprächen mit Maklern, Gutachtern und Sachverständigen gesammelt hat, berichten.

Zweiter Redner des Abends ist Herr Prof. Klaus Buchner: der in München und Edinburgh studierte Atomphysiker arbeitete am Institut von Prof. Heisenberg, einem der Begründer der Atomphysik. Zurzeit ist er am Zentrum Mathematik der Technischen Universität München tätig. Als einer der profiliertesten und sachkundigsten Kritiker der heutigen Mobilfunktechnologie wird er über Hintergründe und Fakten zum anlaufenden Volksbegehren "Gesundheitsvorsorge Mobilfunk" berichten.

Der dritte Referent des kurzweiligen Abends ist Dieter Kugler. Herr Kugler war 20 Jahre erfolgreich in der Pharmaindustrie tätig, bevor er sich 1976 der geobiologischen Beratertätigkeit und dem Spezialbereich Elektrosmog zuwandte. Sein heutiges Wissen hat er in über 4000 Haus- und Grundstücksuntersuchungen erworben und ist für seine Sachlichkeit und Objektivität bei der Behandlung dieses sensiblen Themas bekannt. The Ukukus Wonder Why a Sacred Glacier Melts in Peru's Andes

It Could Portend World's End,
So Mountain Worshipers Are Stewarding the Ice

QOLQEPUNKU GLACIER, Peru -- One recent moonlit night high in the Peruvian Andes, about 200 men dressed in furry cloaks and woolen masks trekked up to a glacier whose ice is said to have magical healing properties.

In the past these men, called ukukus after the word for bear in the local Quechua language, cut and hauled down large blocks of ice to share with family, friends and livestock as part of an annual Catholic pilgrimage known as El Señor de Qoyllur Rit'i that usually draws about 40,000 worshipers to a dizzying 16,000 feet above sea level.

These days, cutting ice is all but taboo. "We used to take ice, but now it's prohibited," said Darwin Apaza Año, a broad-faced ukuku from the province of Anta.

The bear-men say their sacred glacier is disappearing. Over a period of two decades, its edge has drawn back 600 feet along the boulder-strewn slope leading to the church in the valley below, according to people here. Even compared with last year, the glacier is noticeably smaller.

That's a worrisome portent for locals who still worship snowcapped mountains as gods, or apus. It's out of concern for the apu living here, the bear-men say, that they have decided not to take any more blocks of ice.

Although few on this remote mountaintop are aware of it, the demise of this Andean ice-cutting ritual is likely the result of global warming. The United Nations says rising temperatures are causing glaciers to recede throughout the world, with some of the most pronounced effects on relatively rare patches of ice in countries like Peru that lie within the tropics.

An ukuku hauls a block of mountain ice near Cuzco, Peru, in 1999. The tradition is disappearing along with Peru's glaciers.

A study by the Peruvian government in 1997 found that the country's glaciers had shrunk by more than 20% over 30 years. The National Commission on Climate Change in Lima now predicts that Peru could lose all its glaciers below 18,000 feet in elevation in the next 10 years. Within 40 years, they may all be gone.

Amid Peru's high mountains, where locals scratch a living from potatoes and alpaca wool, most people have little idea that changes to their climate may be caused by global warming. As debate rages in industrialized countries over how to control the problem, it is people living in remote regions like the Andes and in the Arctic who are the first to feel the impact of climate change.

The cosmological implications of the missing snow are clear to people here. According to local myth, when the snow disappears from the tops of the mountains, it will herald the end of the world. "That's what the farmers say. But I believe it, too," said Ramón Salizar Flores, a shopkeeper in the southern city of Cuzco who last made the 10-hour trip to Qoyllur Rit'i six years ago.

Qoyllur Rit'i, which means "resplendent snow" in Quechua, likely started out hundreds of years ago as a rite to the apus, said Jean-Jacques Decoster, who teaches precolonial history at the University of Cuzco, located in the onetime capital of the Inca empire. Later, in 1780 as tradition has it, Jesus appeared on the mountain in the guise of a little blond boy.

"When Spaniards had difficulty converting the populace, they invented a miracle," said Enrique Vera Farfan, a tour guide who is also a dancer in one of dozens of troupes that parade nonstop around the mountainside, accompanied by noisy brass bands.

Today Catholic and pagan traditions are fused, an effect known as syncretism. For instance, the glacial ice is deemed to be holy water, and it is also still revered as the apu's semen, good for fertilizing Pacha Mama, or Mother Earth. "It's the same thing," Mr. Vera explained between gulps of coca-leaf tea.

Until recently, a highlight of the festival was when the ukukus carried down heavy blocks of ice tied to their backs. Some of the ice found its way 100 miles northwest to Cuzco's cathedral. Other pieces were distributed on the spot as a healing elixir.

The ukukus first started to get worried about the ice about 1993, said Carlos Flores Lizana, a former Jesuit priest who ran the Qoyllur Rit'i sanctuary at the time. The mystical bear-men, who consider themselves guardians of the snow, worried that taking ice might be causing it to shrink. "They had the ecological issue in mind," said Mr. Flores. "They didn't want the glacier destroyed more."

Prohibiting ice-cutting was tried, but not always enforced. Gradually, the tradition seems to have all but ended.

At around 2 a.m. on the last Tuesday of May, a shaggy procession headed up to one of the glaciers. As they huddled against the cold under fluttering Peruvian flags, a caporal, or ukuku captain, shouted out the rules from a candle-lit podium carved in the snow. Dangerous crevasses had opened in the ice. So, this year, only 18 ukukus would ascend onto the glacier at a time.

Territory on the glaciers is divided among six principal groups, or naciónes, representing towns or areas in the province of Cuzco. In the section designated for the Paruro nation, only a small crescent of frozen snow now remains. Caporal Edgar Galdós told his troupe of musicians and dancers they would have to stay off the ice this year altogether.

Teodoro Sullca, a mechanic dressed in a furry tunic tied with bells, flags and a plastic doll, was disappointed. "It used to be that everyone went up," he said.

Despite the ban on cutting big blocks, many ukukus still stuff some snow into soda bottles to take home. "We don't take ice anymore because it's diminishing. We take just a little," said Alejandro Quispe, a weathered 38-year-old potato farmer.

The bear-men of Qoyllur Rit'i always speak in a high falsetto while in costume. Asked what the cause of the melting could be, Mr. Quispe lifted a thin finger toward the sky and squeaked, "It's the will of El Señor."

Others offer pet scientific theories. Mr. Vera said that fireworks are causing the glacier to collapse. He also thinks the cooking fires that choke the valley with smoke could be to blame. Serapio Mitane, the president of the Christian brotherhood that manages the pilgrimage site, said reflections from the church's steel roof may be the cause.

Mathias Vuille, a climatologist at the Department of Geosciences at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass., said fireworks and campfires aren't likely to affect a massive glacier. "I couldn't possibly imagine that would have an impact," he said. Dr. Vuille, who helps operate a weather station in Peru, says when glaciers shrink it's due to a combination of higher temperatures, less snowfall and factors such as humidity.

Despite what is happening to the glaciers, the festival has grown substantially over recent years, drawing foreign tourists and many more Peruvians from cities like Cuzco and Lima. That means a business opportunity for hundreds of vendors hawking eggs over rice, alpaca ponchos and decorative metal teeth. "This could be the second Machu Picchu if the snow stays," said Cleto Orccon Huamán, a photographer snapping Polaroids of pilgrims for $1.25 each.

Some longtime pilgrims don't like all the commercialism. Recently, vendors were expelled from in front of the sanctuary, but they still clog the dirt path leading to the pilgrimage site. Two years ago, several members of the sanctuary's brotherhood were expelled for stealing alms.

Mr. Vera said it's no wonder that the snow is vanishing. "It's because the apu is leaving. He's moving further from this place."

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania, June 21, 2005 (ENS) - Participants at BioDemocracy 2005, the alternative conference to the Biotechnology Industry Organization's yearly gathering, are demanding a ban on the release of genetically engineered (GE) trees into the environment.

"Genetically engineered trees are already being researched in the field, and industry is moving rapidly toward commercialization without regard for the predictable and inevitable impacts they will have on ecosystems and communities," four conservation groups said in a statement today.

The Sierra Club, the Global Justice Ecology Project, Southern Forests Network and STOP GE Trees Campaign say there has been little risk assessment on the impacts of gene drift from genetically modified trees, and they charge that regulatory agencies are acting as facilitators for industry rather than champions of the public interest.

"Gene drift has caused widespread contamination of non-GE seeds in farm crops less than a decade after commercialization," said Alyx Perry, coordinator of the Southern Forests Network. "GE trees will much more quickly contaminate forests with traits that could make them incapable of producing sawtimber and unable to support wildlife," said Perry.

Test plots of genetically engineered in the Southeast threaten to contaminate the forests of Pennsylvania and the entire east coast of the United States and Canada, the groups warn.

"Transgenic forestry focuses on native trees species that have pollen and seeds historically known to travel for hundreds if not thousands of miles," they said today.

Legal concerns are being raised about the potential escape of genetically modified tree pollen or seeds into native trees. The conservationists cite the Canadian case of canola farmer Percy Schmeiser who was successfully sued by Monsanto for patent violations when his crops were contaminated by Monsanto's transgenic canola. Schmeiser lost his canola crop and had to pay $160,000 in legal fees.

"This opens the very serious question about who will own trees on public or private lands that become contaminated by GE tree pollen, and what will be the legal and financial ramifications for the owners of that land," the groups said.

Proponents of transgenic trees say they offer potential solutions to forestry problems. In a 2004 study, Roger Sedjo of Resources for the Future, says, "Transgenic trees could increase the productivity of industrial wood, and benefit the environment by taking the pressure off of old-growth and natural forests."

Sedjo says other benefits include restoration of certain diseased or damaged tree species, as well as toxic cleanup and bioremediation, by creating trees to remove heavy metals and other toxics from contaminated soils in places where other forms of cleanup are too expensive.

"Just as in agriculture, biotechnology and transgenics are controversial topics in forestry," Sedjo acknowledges.

There are many aspects to the controversy, as today's comments of the conservation groups indicate.

"In addition to GE trees threatening Pennsylvania's native forests, GE apple trees, being researched in nearby Cornell University, threaten the millions of conventional and organic apple trees in production in Pennsylvania," said Dr. Neil Carman of the Sierra Club.

"GE contamination could lead to economic disaster for Pennsylvania's apple growers in much the same way that GE papaya in Hawaii has wiped out many conventional and organic papaya farmers there. The only solution is to ban the release of GE trees into the environment," Carman said.

"While the genetic engineering PR spin doctors are cranking out propaganda about how GE trees will solve our problems, the fact is GE trees will cause massive new problems, some of which we can't possibly foresee," said Orin Langelle, coordinator of the STOP GE Trees Campaign, an alliance of 13 organizations from the U.S. and Canada committed to banning transgenic trees.

Umweltverbände protestieren gegen Kooperation mit dem BAYER-Konzern

Sehr geehrter Herr Liedtke,

mit Verärgerung haben wir die Kooperation zwischen National Geographic Deutschland und der Bayer AG bei der Gründung des Global Exploration Fund „Süßwasser“ zur Kenntnis genommen. Wir sind der Meinung, dass das sinnvolle Anliegen, Forschung zum Schutz des Trinkwassers zu befördern, durch die Zusammenarbeit mit einem der größten Wasserverschmutzer Deutschlands diskreditiert wird.

Fabriken und Produkte des Bayer-Konzerns belasten Grund- und Oberflächenwässer in aller Welt. Sie sollten dem Unternehmen nicht gestatten, dies durch einen Griff in die Portokasse zu kaschieren.

Zur Problematik „Wasserverschmutzung durch den Bayer-Konzern“ einige Beispiele:

* Bayer gehört zu den 10 größten Direkteinleitern von Schadstoffen in Deutschland. Das Unternehmen emittiert über das Abwasser jährlich rund 600 Tonnen Phosphor, 3.400 to Stickstoff, 1,5 Mio to anorganischer Salze, 73 to Chlororganika und 29 to Schwermetalle (Werte für 2002 bzw. 2003). Das Grundwasser rund um Bayer-Werke ist häufig stark belastet – so wurden kürzlich in der Nachbarschaft der Bayer-Fabrik in Durban/Südafrika bis zu 4800 mg Chrom pro Liter Grundwasser gefunden.

* Bayer ist der weltweit größte Pestizid-Hersteller. Agrogifte belasten in aller Welt Böden und Grundwasser. Allein in Deutschland werden jährlich mehr als 30.000 to Pestizide versprüht, rund 30% des Grundwassers sind dadurch belastet. Die Wasserwerke müssen jährlich dreistellige Millionenbeträge ausgeben, um das Trinkwasser frei von Pestiziden zu halten.

* Täglich verbraucht der Bayer-Konzern rund 2,1 Millionen cbm Wasser. Allein das Werk Leverkusen erzeugt doppelt so viel Abwasser wie die benachbarte Millionenstadt Köln. Die meisten Werke des Unternehmens entnehmen dem Boden hochqualitatives Grundwasser und leisten hierfür aufgrund „alter Wasserrechte“ nicht einmal Abgaben.

* Jahrzehntelang gelangten aus der Dhünnaue, einer der weltweit größten Chemie-Deponien, hohe Mengen Schadstoffe in den Rhein. Der Bayer-Konzern hatte in der Dhünnaue mehrere hunderttausend Tonnen Chemiemüll ungesichert gelagert.

* Seit vielen Jahren fordern Umweltgruppen die Veröffentlichung der Einleiterdaten der Bayer-Werke. Das Unternehmen verweigert dies. Als der "Verein zum Schutze des Rheins und seiner Nebenflüsse" die Daten für das Werk Leverkusen einsehen wollte, rief Bayer sogar die Gerichte an. Es wollte seine in die Flüsse eingeleiteten Schadstoffmengen per Urteil zum Betriebsgeheimnis erklären lassen, kam aber mit seinem Ansinnen nicht durch. "Chemie im Dialog" sieht anders aus.

* Zahlreiche Produkte des Unternehmens belasten noch nach Jahrzehnten die Umwelt. So gehörte Bayer zu den weltweit größten PCB-Herstellern – auch dann noch, als die Risiken Polychlorierter Biphenyle durch Gesundheitsbeeinträchtigungen in den Produktionsanlagen allgemein bekannt waren. Das Hafenbecken von Oslo ist beispielsweise stark mit PCB aus Schiffsanstrichen verseucht, größtenteils durch Lacke von Bayer.

Der Konzern sucht seit Jahren Kooperationen mit glaubwürdigen Organisationen (z.B. UNEP, WHO, Umweltverbänden). Dabei wählt Bayer gezielt solche Bereiche aus, in denen das Unternehmen in der Kritik steht. Solche „best practice“-Projekte verstellen jedoch den Blick darauf, dass Chemie-Unternehmen für eine große Zahl von Umweltproblemen verantwortlich sind.

Wir fordern Sie auf, die Zusammenarbeit mit der Bayer AG einzustellen. Diese Kooperation schadet dem Umwelt- und Trinkwasserschutz.

Protest - Großes Interesse beim Infoabend der Bürgerinitiative gegen die Mobilfunkanlage Metzinger Straße

ENINGEN. Das Thema brennt den Eningern offensichtlich auf den Nägeln: Wie gefährlich ist Mobilfunk? Trotz Hitze und räumlicher Enge kamen über 100 Interessierte zur Informationsveranstaltung der Bürgerinitiative, darunter Bürgermeisterin Margarete Krug und elf Gemeinderäte.

Aktuell geplant ist in Eningen ein UMTS-Sender-Standort in der Metzinger Straße in unmittelbarer Nähe von Wohnhäusern (wir berichteten). Seit 2001 steht dort bereits ein Sendemast, der Betreiber O2 hatte damals einen langjährigen Vertrag mit dem Grundstücksbesitzer abgeschlossen. Als jetzt die Anlage eingerichtet werden sollte, wehrten sich die Anwohner. Bürgermeisterin Krug versucht derzeit in Gesprächen, den Betreiber für einen anderen Standort, außerhalb der Ortsgrenzen von Eningen, zu gewinnen.

Wie man bei den Verhandlungen mit den Betreibern möglichst erfolgreich vorgehen kann, was man als Initiative und was jeder Einzelne tun kann, darüber berichtete Jürgen Groschupp, Mitglied im Mobilfunk Bürgerforum, einem Dachverein gegen Elektrosmog in Baden-Württemberg. Der Großbettlinger ist seit sieben Jahren von der Problematik betroffen und hat zusammen mit einer dortigen Bürgerinitiative durch Verhandlungen erreicht, dass der Sendemast in Großbettlingen abgebaut und außerhalb des Ortes verlagert wurde.

Handy selten benutzen

Er machte klar, dass man es als Handynutzer selbst in der Hand habe, wie viel Sendemasten beispielsweise nach Eningen kommen und plädierte für ein sehr reduziertes telefonieren mit Handys.

Die gesetzlich festgelegten Grenzwerte für elektromagnetische Strahlung in Deutschland seien »gigantisch hoch«. Es gebe jedoch etliche Hinweise und Untersuchungen, die belegten, dass weit unterhalb dieser Grenzwerte biologische Effekte aufträten, die diverse Gesundheitsstörungen hervorrufen können, angefangen von Schlafstörungen bis hin zum gehäuften Auftreten von gewissen Krebsarten und Erbgutschäden, so Groschupp. Der Werteverlust der umliegenden Wohngebäude belaufe sich auf durchschnittlich 5 bis 30 Prozent, auch wirtschaftlich rechne sich die Aufstellung eines Mastes nicht, der dem Verpächter bei laufendem Betrieb etwa 3 000 Euro im Jahr einbringt.

Als Nachbarn habe man die Möglichkeit, sich zusammenzuschließen und auf Wertminderung zu klagen, ergänzte Susanne Holz von der Bürgerinitiative und unmittelbare Anliegerin des geplanten Standorts in der Metzinger Straße.

Diplom-Ingenieur Dietrich Ruoff, der in Erkenbrechtsweiler ein Ingenieurbüro für Baubiologie und Messtechnik betreibt, klärte in einem informativen, aber für die späte Stunde etwas langem Vortrag über die hohe Strahlenbelastung und die Gefahren auf, die beispielsweise von Handy, Radiowecker und Mikrowelle ausgehen können.

Die gepulste Hochfrequenz in der Mobilfunktechnik bedeute Stress für das biologische System. Mobilfunk und Krebs - das sei ein »unkalkulierbares Risiko«.

Mobilfunkstrahlungen im Ort werden beispielsweise durch Häuser und Bäume reflektiert und gestreut. Den Wohnraum schützen könne man gegebenenfalls durch bestimmte reflektierende Materialen, über die man sich fachmännischen Rat einholen müsse.

Schlechte Standortwahl

Ruoff gab konkrete Tipps, wie man die Handystrahlung reduzieren könne. Vor allem in Verbindung mit Vorbelastungen und Vorschädigungen des Menschen können die Emissionen des Mobilfunks Krankheiten hervorrufen, so der Baubiologe.

In der anschließenden Fragerunde, die Rechtsanwalt Wolfgang Kurz, der ebenfalls der Bürgerinitiative angehört, leitete, gab es vor allem Fragen zum Standort Eningen.

Als »katastrophal« bezeichnete Ruoff die Wahl des Standortes an der Metzinger Straße, da mehrere hangaufwärts stehende Häuser von der Strahlung unmittelbar betroffen seien: »Da haben Sie die Strahlung unterm Esstisch.« Er rät, einen Standort zu suchen, der deutlich höher liegt.

Nach Empfehlung des Verbandes Mobilfunk Bürgerforum sollte ein Sendemast mindestens 400 Meter von der nächsten Wohnbebauung entfernt stehen. In Eningen, das wurde an diesem Abend deutlich, gibt es bereits etwa zehn Mobilfunkstandorte (vor allem GSM-Technik), zwei davon in der Nähe von Kindergärten.

Weitere drei Standorte sind geplant. Man wolle erreichen, dass geplante außerhalb der Ortschaft errichtet werden, so Susanne Holz, und dass Sicherheitsabstände zu Kindergärten und Schulen eingehalten werden.

Für die Betreiber, das machten Groschupp und Ruoff klar, sei jedoch ein Standort im Ort rentabler, da dadurch doppelt so viel Nutzer erreicht werden können. (GEA)

IT-Projekte haben ja in der Geschichte Deutsch/lands bereits eine langjährige "Tradition" [man vergleiche [1]]. Nun versucht man auch dies im Bereich der Biometrie-Pässe "traditionsbewusst" durch übereilte Schnellschüsse fortzuführen.


Deutsche preschen bei Biometrie-Pass vor

Trotz Verlängerung der Einführungsfrist bis zum Oktober 2006 will Deutschland bereits dieses Jahr biometrische Merkmale in die Reisepässe integrieren. Innenminister Schily hat den entsprechenden Vorschlag durchs Kabinett gepeitscht.

Die deutsche Bundesregierung hat den Weg für die Einführung biometrischer Pässe zum 1. November freigemacht.

Wie das Innenministerium am Mittwoch in Berlin mitteilte, stimmte das Kabinett einem entsprechenden Vorschlag von Bundesinnenminister Otto Schily [SPD] zu. Nachdem der Ausgabe der Pässe aus technischer Sicht nichts mehr im Wege stehe, sei jetzt auch der nötige rechtliche Rahmen geschaffen worden, erklärte Schily.

Der geplanten Verordnung muss noch der Bundesrat zustimmen. Abgeordnete von Grünen und FDP kritisierten den Kabinettsbeschluss als übereilt. Die Technik sei noch nicht ausgereift.


Schily liebt Biometrie-Pässe

Schily sprach von einem wichtigen Schritt bei der Nutzung der "großen Fortschritte der Biometrie für die innere Sicherheit". Die biometrischen Reisepässe ermöglichten die "sichere Identifikation des Passinhabers" und seien besser vor Fälschungen geschützt als bisher, hieß es vom Ministerium. Deutschland eines der ersten Länder mit Biometrie-Pass

Wenn die Verordnung wie vorgesehen in Kraft tritt, wird Deutschland demnach eines der ersten EU-Länder sein, das mit der Ausgabe der neuen Dokumente beginnt.

Der so genannte ePass soll einen Chip enthalten, in dem zunächst ein digitales Foto mit den Gesichtsmerkmalen des Passinhabers gespeichert wird. Ab März 2007 sollen zusätzlich zwei Fingerabdrücke gespeichert werden.

Die biometrischen Pässe sollen auf Druck der USA die Fahndung nach mutmaßlichen Terroristen und anderen Straftätern erleichtern. In den USA gehört die Verschärfung der Einreisebestimmungen zu dem Paket von Sicherheitsmaßnahmen nach den Anschlägen vom 11. September 2001.


Opposition übt Kritik

Schily habe das Parlament übergangen, kritisierte der Parlamentarische Geschäftsführer der Grünen, Volker Beck. Der Innenminister habe eine Rechtsverordnung durchgesetzt, obwohl eigentlich eine gesetzliche Regelung der biometrischen Merkmale nötig sei.

Die von Schily als Grund vorgebrachte "Eilbedürftigkeit" sei aber nicht gegeben gewesen. In der vergangenen Woche hatten die USA Deutschland und 26 weiteren Ländern ein weiteres Jahr Zeit gegeben, um die neuen Reisedokumente einzuführen. Die Frist wurde auf den 26. Oktober 2006 verschoben.

Auch die FDP bemängelte, Schily habe die biometrischen Pässe trotz erheblicher Bedenken von Datenschützern durchs Kabinett gepeitscht.

Hoy como Ayer, en el tema de la telefonía móvil son los propios cobayas, niños incluídos, los que hacen estudios epidemiológicos.

Hoy son estudiantes quienes descubren, al cruzar la información, que los tumores se concentran en el área de emisión de las antenas.

Ayer eran los afectados de El Bibio quienes realizaban sus propias encuestas sanitarias.

Hoy el trabajo de trece de los mejores alumnos de ESO del Colegio de la Asunción son dirigidos por su profesor de Física y Química, en la investigación. Lo hacen desde la lejanía, con ánimo expositivo y sin querer atacar a nadie, ni buscar culpables.

Ayer quienes se ponían el mono de trabajo eran los propios afectados (linfoma de Hodking, carcinoma suprarrenal, cáncer de lengua, tumor de próstata, cánceres de mama…), que contaron con el inestimable asesoramiento de varios médicos residentes en la zona. Acusaban a los vecinos de la Comunidad de “La Gacela” que albergaban las antenas en su tejado a cambio de 12000 € anuales.

Estudiantes de la Asunción descubren al cruzar la información que los tumores se concentran en el área de emisión de las antenas Ángel C. SUARDÍAZ Entre el año 2000 y el pasado 2004 se diagnosticaron en Gijón más de 7.000 enfermos de cáncer, con una media de 1.400 neoplasias detectadas cada año. Trece de los mejores alumnos de cuarto de ESO del Colegio de la Asunción, dirigidos por su profesor de Física y Química, han completado un trabajo de investigación que trata de aclarar la eventual vinculación entre tumores y antenas de telefonía móvil casi una semana después de que el Gobierno de José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero concediera la ampliación de licencias para los operadores de este servicio en el territorio nacional. El resultado es un minucioso informe rebosante de datos procedentes de fuentes oficiales, como el Ayuntamiento de Gijón, el Hospital de Jove y el Hospital de Cabueñes. Los alumnos no sacan conclusiones ni hacen juicios de valor. El área metropolitana del concejo gijonés concentra 92 estaciones base, que suman, al menos, 299 antenas de telefonía móvil, la mayoría con permiso municipal, aunque no todas. El Llano, con catorce instalaciones que suponen un total de 53 pantallas, es el barrio donde más han proliferado estos emisores de energía ionizante. Y es también donde más carcinomas se han declarado en la ciudad durante los últimos cinco años: 760. Los estudiantes que firman el documento han comprobado que en las calles próximas a cualquiera de las estaciones base los casos de cáncer presentan «muchas variaciones», mientras que en las áreas donde esta dotación permanece ausente «las estadísticas se repiten sistemáticamente, es decir, permanecen constantes». «Las antenas no disponen de pantallas orientadas en todas las direcciones, sino que apuntan hacia un lugar determinado de la ciudad», advierten los escolares, que han constatado una «concentración mayor» de enfermos de cáncer «en el área hacia donde emiten estas pantallas». Los autores del trabajo denominan «efecto cono» esta singularidad, pues es ésa la figura geométrica que aparece cuando se agrupan sobre el mapa con la ayuda de un lápiz los domicilios de los pacientes de neoplasia registrados en cada barrio de Gijón durante el último lustro. Eso no es todo. El documentado esfuerzo de los colegiales concluye que los nuevos casos de neoplasia declarados en la ciudad abundan sobremanera entre los vecinos de los edificios que soportan la «acción combinada de varias antenas superpuestas». Alarmados ante la plasmación gráfica mediante planos y transparencias de la incidencia del cáncer en los distintos barrios de Gijón, los autores del informe declaran que «nuestra intención es de mera exposición, y en ningún momento de ofensa o ataque a cualquier empresa». «Planteamos un hecho, no buscamos responsable alguno», encadenan. Los trece de la Asunción disponen de sendos teléfonos móviles y los usan, «pero ahora con más precauciones tanto para interrumpir como para iniciar la comunicación», reconoce Julio César García, el único varón del grupo investigador frente a doce chicas, una de las cuales, Ana Riera, ya había presentado un estudio sobre la relación entre enfermedad y antenas, pero ceñido a un edificio de El Bibio donde en poco tiempo se sucedieron trece casos de cáncer. Comandados por el profesor José Ramón Suárez, la lista de autores del informe se completa con Lucía Allende, Arancha Fernández Prada, Lucía Areces, Covadonga Loredo, Ana María Pérez, Leticia Martín Eiriz, Patricia Gándara, Paula Chave, Patricia Gutiérrez, Amanda Álvarez Noval y Carmen Álvarez Cuervo, con la colaboración de Mónica González, profesora de Informática.

La comisión de afectados pide a la comunidad de la torre «La Gacela» que no acepte la propuesta de Vodafone para ampliar el contrato otros 20 años

Una encuesta realizada por los vecinos de los portales 135, 137, 139 y 141 de la calle Ezcurdia, 52 de Torcuato y 8 de la calle Sporting (de El Bibio) revela la existencia en las citadas comunidades de un linfoma de Hodking, un carcinoma suprarrenal, un cáncer de lengua con extirpación de ganglios, un tumor de próstata maligno, varios cánceres de mama, graves lesiones coronarias de origen desconocido, alergias indeterminadas y un cáncer ovárico. Además fallecieron siete vecinos durante los últimos años por enfermedades graves. El 58 por ciento de los encuestados declara también sufrir graves alteraciones del sueño, y el 40 por ciento dolores de cabeza continuados de origen desconocido.

Los vecinos admiten que puede ser casualidad el que se concentren tantos enfermos graves en estas comunidades, pero recuerdan que tienen como elemento diferenciador respecto al resto de gijoneses el que viven en un radio inferior a los 300 metros de una antena de telefonía (la situada en el tejado de la torre «La Gacela»), colocada en 1996, y que están bajo la influencia de otras tres muy cercanas: las dos del interior de la Feria de Muestras (Retevisión y Xfera) y la cercana a la plaza de toros (Telefónica).

El muestreo fue realizado entre 118 vecinos de las 120 viviendas afectadas y contó con el asesoramiento de varios médicos residentes en la zona, incluido el doctor José Guerra, jefe del servicio médico de la UVI del Hospital de Cabueñes. Sus resultados son reveladores, tanto que la comisión de afectados, constituida especialmente para este caso, acordó enviarlos a casi 400.000 viviendas de toda Asturias. «Queremos que todo el mundo sepa los riesgos que entrañan estas instalaciones. Es posible que no tengan nada que ver con la salud, como alegan las empresas, pero no está demostrado que sea así y debemos exigir que se coloquen fuera de las poblaciones», dicen los vecinos.

El 70 por ciento de los encuestados vive frente a la antena y el 26 por ciento a un lado. El 83 por ciento lleva viviendo en estas comunidades desde hace más de 5 años; el 82 por ciento habita en la vivienda más de 5 días a la semana y el 87 por ciento está en casa más de 8 horas al día. Además de las enfermedades descritas, los vecinos se quejan de ansiedad, cansancio general, alteraciones de la piel y afecciones respiratorias. También hay vecinos que utilizan marcapasos y se preguntan si Vodafone (propietaria de la antena de «La Gacela») les proporcionará otra vivienda.

La inquietud se extiende por los alrededores de estas comunidades. La dirección del centro de salud del Parque comunicó a algunos padres que el servicio de pediatría constata la existencia de un agente desconocido que está generando numerosos casos de «dermatitis atópica» no causada por alergias ni por predisposiciones genéticas. Y las direcciones de los colegios infantiles Clarín y Las Mestas también apoyan a los vecinos. Las APA participan en las reuniones de las comunidades y colocarán una pancarta en los centros en contra de las antenas.

Mientras tanto Vodafone propuso a la comunidad de «La Gacela» ampliar el contrato de la antena, que acaba en 2006, otros 20 años a cambio de 12.000 euros anuales. Su intención es colocar otras tres antenas de nueva generación (UMTS) que irradian ondas electromagnéticas en otras frecuencia cuyas consecuencias para la salud son desconocidas.

Los vecinos de «La Gacela» tendrán que dar una respuesta el próximo martes y todas las comunidades cercanas apelan a su solidaridad para que la rechacen. De hecho, la comisión especial y los presidentes vecinales les hicieron llegar un escrito en el que apelan a la sensatez y la prudencia para que no acepten la propuesta de Vodafone. «Todos elegimos este precioso barrio para vivir porque está rodeados de paseos y árboles, pero no de antenas. Están en juego nuestra salud y nuestro patrimonio», argumentan. Todos están en contra de esa ampliación y para demostrarlo colocaron paños rojos en las ventanas de sus viviendas. «No acudieron a las reuniones a que les invitamos, ni nos escuchan, pero esperamos que de esta forma se den por enterados de que tienen a todos los portales en contra», explicó Susana Rodríguez, de la calle Sporting, número 8.

Greenpeace: Genmais kann gesundheitsschädlich sein

Umweltorganisation veröffentlicht Forschungsergebnisse des Gentechnik-Konzerns Monsanto

Die Umweltorganisation Greenpeace hat vor Gericht durchsetzen können, vertrauliche Dokumente des Saatgutkonzerns Monsanto über eine neue Sorte von genmanipuliertem Mais einsehen zu dürfen. Heute hat Greenpeace die brisanten Forschungsergebnisse der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt. Danach könne genmanipulierter Mais gesundheitsschädlich sein, so die Umweltorganisation.

Am Montag erst hat ein Gericht entschieden, dass bisher vertrauliche Dokumente dieses Gentechnik-Konzerns Monsanto eingesehen werden dürfen. Heute nun das Ergebnis, das dieses Unternehmen lieber nicht in der Öffentlichkeit gesehen hätte: Genmanipulierter Mais könnte gesundheitsschädlich sein. Bisher ist das ja nur vermutet worden, jetzt aber gibt es Ergebnisse, die Greenpeace jedenfalls so auslegt, dazu der Experte dieser Umweltschutzorganisation für Fragen der Gentechnik, Christoph Then: Es geht um Fütterungsversuche, die die Firma Monsanto an Ratten durchgeführt hat, die Firma Monsanto wollte um jeden Preis verhindern, dass diese Dokumente öffentlich gemacht werden, weil sich in diesen Dokumenten zeigt, dass die Ratten, die den Genmais gefressen hatten, im Versuch Effekte haben, die auf ganz klare Gesundheitsschäden hinweisen.

Monsanto stellt Saatgut für eine Maissorte her, die ein eigenes Gift produziert, und zwar eines, das einem Schädling, dem Maiswurzelbohrer weitestgehend den Garaus machen soll. Dieses Gift ist also Bestandteil der Pflanze selbst, und die Frage, ob es auch dem Menschen schadet, liegt ja nahe. Die Ratten also haben Gesundheitsschäden, wenn sie diesen Mais fressen, und das dürfte dann auch für Menschen gelten, so jedenfalls die Auslegung dieser Ergebnisse. Ein Beweis ist das nicht, aber Grund genug, sich Sorgen zu machen und der Sache weiter auf den Grund zu gehen:

Aus diesen Studien heraus ergeben sich Hinweise, dass der Mais Gesundheitsschäden auslösen kann, eine endgültige Untersuchung liegt nicht vor, wir sind erstaunt, dass die Behörden bisher keine weiteren Untersuchungen angeordnet haben und auch die Firma Monsanto es nicht für nötig befunden hat, nach zu untersuchen. Das heißt, das endgültige Ergebnis der Bewertung von diesem speziellen Genmais steht aus, aber die vorliegenden Daten geben Anlass zur Besorgnis. Auf keinen Fall kann der Mais zugelassen werden.

Diese Forderung weitet Greenpeace aus auf alle Lebens- und Futtermittel in der Europäischen Union. Grundsätzlich gilt: Die Gesundheitsschädigung durch gentechnisch veränderte Organismen auf Menschen oder aber auf Nutztiere, die wiederum gegessen werden, ist nicht bewiesen. Aber das Risiko lässt sich nicht beherrschen, sagen die Kritiker. Viele dieser Saaten aus dem Labor, wie auch der umstrittene Genmais der Firma Monsanto, haben ein Gen für Antibiotika-Restistenz. Wenn diese manipulierten Gene sich auf Krankheitserreger übertragen, könnte es sein, dass diese ebenfalls resistent werden gegen Antibiotika. Und nicht mehr bekämpft werden können. Und dann hat man es mit viel größeren Problemen zu tun, als bisher, so jedenfalls argumentiert Greenpeace, um gleichzeitig zu fordern, dass genmanipulierte Organismen auf unseren Feldern gar nichts zu suchen haben sollten:

Es ist so, dass nicht in jedem Fall eine Gesundheitsgefährdung nachgewiesen ist. Aber es ist so, dass Wechselwirkungen in der Pflanze, also die Regelung des Genoms, viel komplexer ist, als man sich das ursprünglich vorgestellt hat. Dass die Methoden, mit denen eingegriffen wird, nicht kalkulierbar sind, nicht zu vorhersehbaren Resultaten führt, und dass deswegen Nebenwirkungen und Risiken für die Umwelt nicht ausgeschlossen werden können, dass deswegen die Technologie insgesamt, so wie sie ausgeführt und kontrolliert wird, die ist nicht praktikabel. Das ist ein Irrweg.

Es ist kein Zufall, dass Greenpeace ausgerechnet heute mit diesen Dokumenten an die Öffentlichkeit getreten ist. Denn am Wochenende entscheiden die Umweltminister der Europäischen Union in Luxemburg über die Frage, ob und unter welchen Voraussetzungen Genmais importiert werden darf. Übrigens gibt es eine seltsame Konstellation in der EU: Obwohl die einzelnen Länder sich in der Mehrheit nicht von Brüssel reinreden lassen wollen, oder gar vorschreiben lassen wollen, dass genetisch manipulierte Nahrungs- und Futtermittel eingeführt werden, tendiert die Kommission in Brüssel zu einer liberalen Auslegung und fordert die Länder auf, ihre nationalen Schutzklauseln aufzuheben. - Was die nicht wollen. Deshalb könnte es sein, dass zumindest dieser eventuell gesundheitsschädliche Mais künftig draußen bleiben muss, was das Problem aber nicht komplett löst:

Wir halten es für sehr aussichtsreich, dass keine Mehrheit zustande kommt für diesen Mais. Auf der anderen Seite ist das Verfahren schwierig in der Europäischen Union. Eine Mehrheit der EU-Länder gegen den Genmais reicht nicht aus, um ihn zu stoppen. Man braucht eine so genannte qualifizierte Mehrheit, die mehr als zwei Drittel aller Mitgliedsländer umfasst, und dieses Verfahren macht sich die Kommission zunutze, um doch eine Marktzulassung auszusprechen, auch wenn die Länder mehrheitlich dagegen sind. Wir üben auch Kritik an dem Verfahren. Wir wissen nicht, wie die Abstimmung ausgehen wird. Wir wissen aber, dass viele Länder mit Nein stimmen werden.

Und die Forderungen von Greenpeace gehen noch weiter: Grundsätzlich sollen künftig solche Forschungsergebnisse, die ja die Gesundheit der Allgemeinheit angehen, öffentlich gemacht werden. Und nicht, wie im Fall von Monsanto, dass da Ergebnisse, die nicht so ganz in das Image des Unternehmens passen, einfach unter den Tisch gekehrt werden. In diesem Fall ist es nur gelungen, weil Greenpeace auf Akteneinsicht nach dem EU-Gentechnikgesetz geklagt hat. Besser natürlich wäre es nach Ansicht der Umweltschützer, wenn nicht Gerichte monate- und jahrelang bemüht werden müssten, sondern eben Resultate von Versuchen dieser Art von vorneherein öffentlich sind.

The New York Times, The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times have all gone way out of their way to deny that the Downing Street Memos are news. Like many of you, during the entire lead-up to the war with Iraq, I thought the whole thing was a set-up. I raise this point not to prove how smart we are, but to emphasize that I followed the debate closely and probably unconsciously searched for evidence that reinforced what I already thought. I read some of the European press and most of the liberal publications in this country. I read the Times, the Post, the Wall Street Journal and several Texas papers every day. It's my job. But when I read the first Downing Street Memo, my eyes bugged out and my jaw fell open. I could not believe what I was reading. It was news to me, and I'm no slouch at keeping up...

When asked why they voted against the EU constitution, Europeans had varying responses but most had the same theme. They were afraid a central European government would have too much control. Concern for the lack of independence of their own country was right up there with a fear wealthier countries would be supporting poorer countries. Schily hatte bereits nach Erscheinen des 20. Tätigkeitsberichts des Bundesbeauftragten im April zu einem heftigen Ordnungsruf gegen Schaar angesetzt. Indem er dem Bundesbeauftragten nunmehr "Amtsmissbrauch" und Überschreitung seiner Befugnisse vorwirft, greife Schily die Unabhängigkeit des Bundesbeauftragten erneut scharf an, kritisiert die Deutsche Vereinigung für Datenschutz e.V.

Nicht mehr geheim: Unterlagen über Gen-Mais-Fütterungsversuche veröffentlicht (22.06.05)

Die Umweltschutzorganisation Greenpeace hat am Mittwoch bisher vertrauliche Dokumente des Gentechnik-Konzerns Monsanto über Fütterungsversuche an Ratten mit genmanipuliertem Mais veröffentlicht. Am Montag hatte das Oberverwaltungsgericht in Münster den Bericht freigegeben, nachdem Greenpeace Akteneinsicht nach EU-Gentechnikrecht beantragt hatte. Die Tiere hätten Gesundheitsschäden aufgewiesen, nachdem sie mit Monsantos Gen-Mais MON 863 gefüttert wurden, berichten die Umweltschützer. So habe sich das Blutbild verändert und es seien Organschäden aufgetreten. Das Die Naturschützer sehen in dem Urteil des Oberverwaltungsgerichts eine Präzendenzentscheidung für Fälle, in denen Firmen ihre Unterlagen über die Risikobewertung von Gen-Pflanzen geheim halten. Laut Greenpeace entscheidet am Freitag der EU-Umweltministerrat in Luxemburg darüber, ob der Gen-Mais nach Europa importiert werden darf.

Internationale Rüstungskontrolle gefordert: Rüstungsexporte der G8 führen zu mehr Armut und weniger Menschenrechten (22.06.05)

84 Prozent aller weltweit gehandelten Waffen, Munition und militärischen Ausrüstungen stammen nach Informationen der Menschenrechtsorganisation amnesty international (ai) aus den Staaten der G8 (Deutschland, Frankreich, Großbritannien, Italien, Japan, Kanada, USA und Russland). Die Staaten der G8 trügen mit ihren Rüstungsexporten "nach wie vor massiv" zu Menschenrechtsverletzungen und Armut bei, schrieben ai, Oxfam, und das Internationalen Aktionsnetznetzwerk zu Kleinwaffen (IANSA) in einem Bericht. Wer aber von Armutsbekämpfung und Menschenrechten rede, müsse mit der Kontrolle von Rüstungstransfers Ernst machen. Auch Deutschland sei einer der fünf größten Waffenexporteure der Welt. Die Kriterien für Exportgenehmigungen seien hierzulande zwar theoretisch streng, aber in der Praxis fehle häufig der politische Wille zur konsequenten Anwendung. Die Aufgabe, die vor den Regierungen der G8-Staaten liege, sei unmissverständlich. Sie müssten bei der Rüstungskontrolle kooperieren und die Zahl der in den Umlauf gebrachten Waffen begrenzen. Als weltweit mächtigste Regierungen sei es ihre Pflicht, ein globales System der Kontrolle des internationalen Waffenhandels einzurichten. Am Donnerstag treffen sich die G8-Außenminister in London.

Viele Bürger, darunter auch Ärzte und Wissenschaftler, halten den weiteren unkontrollierten Ausbau des Mobilfunknetzes für bedenklich. Weltweit warnen inzwischen Hunderte von Untersuchungen und Studien vor den Gefahren der Mobilfunkstrahlung. Von gesellschaftlichen Problemen abgesehen (Handy als Schuldenfalle, Mobilfunk als Suchtmittel und Ursache des Verlusts kommunikativer Kompetenz) birgt die Mobilfunktechnologie erhebliche gesundheitliche Risiken in sich (Schlafstörungen, Beeinträchtigung des Lernvermögens, ADHS, Schwächung des Immunsystems, erhöhtes Krebsrisiko, Erbgutschäden, Öffnung der Blut-Hirn-Schranke...). Besonders gefährdete Personen sind oben erwähnten Studien zu Folge Kinder, Senioren und Kranke.

Es muss also unbedingt mehr Bürgerbeteiligung bei der Auswahl der Standorte erreicht werden, um insbesondere die schwächsten Mitglieder unserer Gesellschaft vor den Profitinteressen der Betreiberfirmen zu schützen. Allerdings lässt die aktuelle bayerische Bauordnung den gewählten Kommunalpolitikern bisher keinen echten Entscheidungsspielraum bei der Auswahl der Standorte, da Sendemasten bis zu einer Höhe von 10 Metern genehmigungsfrei sind. Dies soll im Jahr 2005 durch das von der ödp initiierte Volksbegehren „Für Gesundheitsvorsorge beim Mobilfunk“ geändert werden. Sendeanlagen sollen künftig nach dem Vorsorgeprinzip nicht in Wohngebieten, bei Kindergärten und Schulen, sondern an unproblematischeren Standorten errichtet werden können. Um dies zu erreichen, muss eine Genehmigungspflicht für Sendemasten in der Bayerischen Bauordnung und die Gesundheitsvorsorge im Landesentwicklungsplan verankert werden. Nach geglücktem Volksbegehren können die Standorte für Sendeanlagen sorgfältiger ausgewählt werden. Nicht die geringsten Kosten dürfen ausschlaggebend für die Standortauswahl sein, sondern eine möglichst große Gesundheitsverträglichkeit.

The so-called AVVPAT technology being submitted by Diebold for certification is a travesty. The thermal paper and miniature type are designed to make a cost-effective hand count impossible. Diebold will have to be paid additional sums to do such hand counts. Predictably, these will be costly.

We need Accessible Voter Verified Paper Ballots that provide an auditable trail by being printed on archival paper in readable font on separate sheets for each ballot. These ballots or audit trails should be capable of being handled and read by vote counters hired and trained by the Counties. The ballots/audit trails must preserve voter confidentiality. They must not be issued as a continued paper roll in which the order of voting is obvious and privacy compromised.

Both the Diebold System and the E S &S Tabulators operate on Proprietary Closed Source Code Software. Their tabulating processes are so secretive and hidden from public scrutiny and observation as to make the verification and observation process hidden and non-transparent to the Voter. This is antithetical to the foundation of American Democracy.

Voting systems with wireless and Internet capabilities MUST be denied as they compromise the entire integrity, secrecy, and security of the voting process. Any knowledgeable hacker with a good encryption cracking program can access and corrupt and alter the voting data in a matter of minutes. The E S & S tabulators have a Dell Laptop which contains wireless capabilities.

Further, BAN DIEBOLD From Doing Business in California for 3 years, by enforcing California Election Code Section 19214.5, subsection (a) and (3) which penalize voting companies that sell and install uncertified software.

(Assoc. Press) "Diebold paid $2.6 million to settle a lawsuit filed by California alleging that the electronic voting company sold the state and several counties shoddy voting equipment." (Mercury News) "State auditors reported that voters in 17 California counties cast ballots in recent elections using software that had not been certified by the state. In conclusion, please require a paper trail that will ensure ballots are counted as cast, oppose wireless capabilities for e-voting systems, promote open source software, and ban Diebold from doing business in California for three years.

New outlet for anti mast/cell phone publicity

Today I bought a copy of magaxine "The Green Parent" (subtitled "Raising kids with conscience") to see if it could be used to raise awareness about masts, cell phones, baby monitors etc. It definitely could! They publish articles and items on organic/healthy/veggie food, allergies, organisations, events, healthy birth and child rearing, chemicals, etc etc etc. It went upmarket a while ago due to increased demand. The current letters page has 5 letters - longest 285 words - but I don't know the maximum. They also publish shorts on bits and pieces and longer articles - ideal for PRs.

Viele Experten sind sich einig: Handy-Strahlen gefährden die Gesundheit. Durch das elektromagnetische Feld, das sich bei einem Gespräch über das mobile Telefon aufbaut, wird das menschliche Gewebe punktweise erwärmt. Zusätzlich wird immer wieder von der nicht-thermischen Wirkung gesprochen, die in Bezug auf das Nervensystem oder auf Zellebene auftritt. In diesem Zusammenhang wird zum Beispiel die Beeinträchtigung der Reaktionszeit vermutet.

Es gibt aber auch Stimmen aus Experten-Kreisen, die die These vertreten, die Strahlung habe keinerlei Einfluss auf den Gesundheitszustand der Handy-Nutzer. Die tatsächlichen Folgen der von mobilen Geräten ausgehenden Strahlung sind somit nach wie vor ungeklärt, bleiben aber Gegenstand intensivster Forschung.

Auch aus der Ärzteschaft regt sich massiver Widerstand. Es sind je nach Initiative Dutzende, Hunderte, bis mehrere Tausend Ärzte und Wissenschaftler aller Fachrichtungen, die sich eindeutig erklären. Nur wenige Sachunkundige und einige professorale Mietmäuler wollen die seit vielen Jahrzehnten vorhandenen Forschungsergebnisse immer noch nicht zur Kenntnis nehmen.

In der Zwischenzeit steht nur noch die Frage im Raum was stärker wiegt:

800 Hartz IV-Haushalte vor Zwangsumzug?

Die Stadt Bochum will 800 ALG II-Haushalte zum Umzug in eine billigere Wohnung zwingen. Das geht aus einer Beschlussvorlage der Verwaltung für die Sitzung des Sozialausschusses am Donnerstag hervor.

Darin empfiehlt die Verwaltung, bei der Beurteilung der Angemessenheit der Unterkunft die bisherigen Richtlinien der Sozialverwaltung unverändert anzuwenden. In diesen Richtlinien ist die angemessene Unterkunft nach Mietspiegel so beschrieben: Baujahr bis maximal 1969, Ausstattungsklasse I (ohne Wärmedämmung), normale Wohnlage, keine Zuschläge für Balkon, Gegensprechanlage oder Gäste-WC, Größen von 45, 60, 75, 90 qm für 1-, 2-, 3- und 4-Personen-Haushalte.

Zuvor legt die Verwaltung die Zahlen vor, die im April fehlten - aus Sicht des Mietervereins ein wahrer Horrorkatalog:

2358 ALG II-Haushalte in Bochum haben nach diesen Regeln unangemessen hohe Unterkunftskosten. Das entspricht einem Anteil von 13 %. Bei zwei Dritteln davon ist die Überschreitung geringfügig (bis 40 € im Monat), so dass ein Umzug unwirtschaftlich erscheint. Für die übrigen 800 gäbe es laut Verwaltung genügend Reserven auf dem Wohnungsmarkt.

"Wenn man daran denkt, dass im letzten Jahr unser Dachverband, der Deutsche Mieterbund, von Bundesminister Wolfgang Clement als „Panikmacher“ gegeißelt worden ist, weil er die Quote der zu teuer wohnenden Hartz-IV-Haushalte auf drei Prozent geschätzt und vor 100.000 Zwangsumzügen gewarnt hatte, können diese Zahlen nur Entsetzen auslösen", meint dazu Mietervereins-Geschäftsführer Michael Wenzel.

Für unangemessen hält der Mieterverein auch, dass die Verwaltung die Umzugskosten mit nur 500 € angibt. Wenzel: "Es mag sein, dass dies für Leihwagen, Kartons und Helfer ausreicht. Völlig unbeachtet bleibt jedoch erneut die Frage der Renovierung. Es ist gar keine Seltenheit, dass Mieter bei einem Umzug die alte und die neue Wohnung renovieren müssen. Und nicht immer ist es dabei mit einem Eimer Farbe getan." Deshalb sei auch die Unwirtschaftlichkeitsgrenze mit 40 € viel zu niedrig angesetzt.

Von der Zahl 2358 ist man beim Mieterverein regelrecht schockiert. Eigene Hochrechnungen von vorläufigen Zahlen, die BA-Chef Liutger Wolterhoff im November genannt hatte, hatten eine Summe von 400 bis 450 zu teuer wohnenden Haushalten ergeben. Politiker im Sozialausschuss hatten von "Einzelfällen" in "Luxuswohnungen" gesprochen. Michael Wenzel: "Unabhängig davon, ob der Wohnungsmarkt eine so große Zahl an angemessenen Wohnungen tatsächlich zur Verfügung stellen kann: 800 Zwangsumzüge leiten unmittelbar die Gettobildung in unserer Stadt ein.

Der Mieterverein hat deshalb erneut die Oberbürgermeisterin und die Fraktionen im Rat angeschrieben und sie dringend aufgefordert, der Vorlage nicht zuzustimmen, sondern wie geplant nach gründlicher Prüfung im September zu entscheiden. Die Beschlussempfehlung der Verwaltung nannte Wenzel "unverantwortlich".

Doch auch wer keine Rechte hat, hat Pflichten - so die Philosophie der »Hamburger Arbeit« (HAB), der mit 2500 Jobbern größte Beschäftigungsträger in der Hansestadt. Am Dienstag informierten Ein-Euro-Jobber die junge Welt über erzwungene Verträge, die gleich mehrfach gegen »gute Sitten« verstoßen. Mit ihrer Unterschrift müssen die Billigjobber das Einverständnis dafür geben, daß sie die Grundlagen des Beschäftigungsverhältnisses anerkennen. Dazu gehört, daß sich der Ein-Euro-Jobber »durch sein gesamtes Verhalten zur demokratischen Staatsauffassung« bekennt. Dieser Radikalenerlaß für Ein-Euro-Jobber klingt wie ein schlechter Scherz. Téléphone mobile: L'Afsse recommande de ne pas équiper les jeunes enfants

L'Agence française de sécurité sanitaire environnementale déconseille l'utilisation du téléphone mobile pour les jeunes enfants, compte tenu "de la persistance d'un doute sérieux quant à la possibilité d'effets sanitaires", dans un avis publié mardi.

L'Afsse, qui répond à une demande des ministères de la Santé et de l'Ecologie, s'appuie sur le travail d'un groupe de dix experts, qui ont passé en revue toutes les études internationales sur la téléphonie
mobile.

Les experts concluent que les rayonnements des téléphones mobiles et les ondes des stations relais ne constituent pas un risque avéré pour la santé, en l'état actuel des connaissances, mais que des études complémentaires s'imposent.

Dans son avis, l'Afsse estime que "la vigilance doit être maintenue", car "bien que l'essentiel des études épidémiologiques déjà publiées tende à réfuter l'existence d'un risque de cancer du cerveau ou d'autres formes de cette maladie chez l'homme, le recul disponible à ce jour n'est pas suffisant pour exclure cette hypothèse".

Compte tenu d'un "doute sérieux quant à la possibilité d'effets sanitaires associés à l'exposition directe du crâne aux champs des téléphones mobiles", l'Agence recommande d'éviter le contact prolongé avec l'appareil et de généraliser le "kit mains libres".

Bien que "les données disponibles n'indiquent pas une sensibilité particulière ni des niveaux différents d'absorption induit par les téléphones mobiles chez les enfants", l'Agence juge prudent d'éviter d'équiper les jeunes enfants.

Dans son avis au gouvernement, elle estime qu'il conviendrait de "demander aux opérateurs, aux fabricants et distributeurs de ne pas cibler les enfants dans des campagnes de promotion de téléphonie mobile".

Elle recommande aussi de "demander aux fabricants et distributeurs, compte tenu des incertitudes qui demeurent, de renoncer provisoirement à la fabrication d'appareils destinés aux jeunes enfants", ajoute l'avis.

Pour les antennes de téléphonie mobile, l'Agence "constate qu'aucune donnée scientifique nouvelle publiée ne révèle un risque pour la santé lié aux rayonnements". Elle recommande néanmoins de procéder systématiquement à une concertation avec les riverains avant toute implantation d'antenne.

Elle préconise en outre de développer des mesures individuelles d'exposition, et de renforcer le respect des distances de sécurité autour des micro antennes, plus faiblement émettrices mais plus proches des hommes, notamment en milieu professionnel.

Residents have chalked up a second victory in their fight against mobile phone masts.

People living near the A2 in Arbuthnot Lane, Bexley, were delighted when the council's planning committee turned down an application by Hutchison 3G(UK) for a mast and equipment on a grassed area in Torbrook Close.

Last year they fought off another application from T-Mobile for a mast in Iris Avenue, just the other side of the A2.

On behalf of the residents, Ian Lowe outlined their fears about the effects of microwave radiation from the mast on residents and especially children.

He reminded councillors: "We already have to live with the blight of the A2."

Councillors unanimously rejected the plan without discussion, because the company had not been able to show it was the only viable site and also because of the damage it would do to the street.

Das globalisierungskritische Netzwerk Attac hat scharfe Kritik am sozialdemokratischen Rettungsplan für die EU geübt, der unter anderem die "gemeinsame Verabschiedung" der neoliberalen EU-Dienstleistungsrichtlinie vorsieht. Dieser Plan soll beim heutigen Treffen von Bundeskanzler Gerhard Schröder und Kommissionspräsident José Manuel Barroso in Aachen besprochen werden. Während SPD-Chef Franz Müntefering noch am vergangenen Montag von einer "Zurückweisung" dieses umstrittenen Richtlinienvorschlags sprach und die rot-grünen Regierungsfraktionen sich nach Angaben des Grünen-Politikers Werner Schulz auf einen Antrag zu seiner Rücknahme einigten, gehört er nun zum Fünf-Punkte-Plan der sozialdemokratischen Fraktion im Europaparlament.

"Links blinken in Deutschland und rechts abbiegen in Europa: Diese Methode ist eine eklatante Wählertäuschung", sagte Thomas Fritz, EU-Experte von Attac. Mit der beabsichtigten Verabschiedung der Dienstleistungsrichtlinie stelle die SPD unter Beweis, dass sie nichts aus der Ablehnung des Europäischen Verfassungsvertrags in Frankreich und den Niederlanden sowie generell in weiten Teilen der Bevölkerung gelernt hat. "Die Menschen haben genug vom neoliberalen Kurs in Europa. Die Dienstleistungsrichtlinie steht jedoch für dessen ungebrochene Fortsetzung."

Der im Januar vergangenen Jahres vom damaligen Binnenmarkt- Kommissar Frits Bolkestein vorgestellte Gesetzentwurf zielt auf die weitere Privatisierung öffentlicher Dienste und auf verschärftes Sozialdumping ab. Mit der Einführung des so genannten Herkunftslandprinzips soll Unternehmen die reibungslose Ausnutzung der innereuropäischen Unterschiede bei Löhnen und Standards ermöglicht und damit ein schonungsloser Standortwettbewerb entfesselt werden.

Diese Kritik, die von vielen Sachverständigen bestätigt wird, ignoriert der gestern vorgestellte Fünf-Punkte-Plan vollständig; stattdessen wird dort behauptet, die Dienstleistungsrichtlinie – sowie die ebenfalls umstrittene Arbeitszeitrichtlinie – sei "wie keine andere geeignet zu zeigen, dass Markterfordernisse und soziale Stabilität zusammengehören". Dazu Thomas Fritz: "Nur Beratungsresistenz und Realitätsverlust können dazu verleiten, die Bolkestein-Richtlinie als Beitrag zur sozialen Stabilität zu stilisieren." Attac Deutschland und Attac Europa werden weiterhin darauf dringen, dass dieser Entwurf zurückgezogen wird. Unter anderem läuft derzeit eine Postkarten- und E-Mail-Aktion an EU-Abgeordnete.

In die Diskussionen zur Verabschiedung der EU-Dienstleistungsrichtlinie scheint auf einmal unerwartete Bewegung zu kommen. Letzten Freitag hieß es noch, Koalitionspolitiker im Bundestag von SPD und Grünen hätten sich auf einen Antrag geeinigt, mit dem sie die Bundesregierung auffordern wollen, die Rücknahme des Kommissionsentwurfs zu fordern (siehe dazu

Heute scheint das schon wieder alles Schnee von gestern zu sein. Als Reaktion auf den gescheiterten Gipfel vom Wochenende legte Martin Schulz, Sozialdemokrat und Vorsitzender der sozialistischen Fraktion im Europäischen Parlament, einen 5-Punkte-Plan vor, dessen zweiter Punkt lautet: "Die Dienstleistungsrichtlinie gemeinsam zu verabschieden, um Wettbewerb zu sichern und gleichzeitig hohe Sozial- und Umweltstandards zu garantieren. Ebenso soll ein Rechtsrahmen für öffentliche Dienstleistungen geschaffen werden. Die Arbeitszeitrichtlinie gemeinsam zu verabschieden, um Flexibilität zu gewährleisten und Ausbeutung zu verhindern."

Dazu gehöre die von London unterstützte Konzentration auf eine weitere Liberalisierung und Deregulierung. In der Debatte um die EU-Dienstleistungsrichtlinie sei die Union „grundsätzlich für das Herkunftslandprinzip“, betont auch Wolfgang Schäuble, stellvertretender Vorsitzender der CDU/CSU-Bundestagsfraktion."

The abolition of the right to jury trial in serious fraud cases is an attack on 800-years of British justice, the Government has been warned. Civil liberty groups, lawyers and opposition leaders all pledged to resist proposals, announced yesterday, that would allow judges to sit alone in cases considered too complex for ordinary jurors to understand. Announcing the latest curb on jury trials, the Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith QC, said that for some time it had become apparent that justice was not being done in some serious fraud cases. BROMLEY Council is to take on the Government over laws which see mobile phone masts imposed on communities against the wishes of planners.

But campaigners who have fought against the masts in the borough say it is too little too late.

In an official letter to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) the council states its concerns at the "present inability through the planning process to act in the best interests of local residents".

Currently Bromley Council has to follow Government guidelines when granting applications for masts, even if residents are fiercely opposed.

Masts under 15m do not require planning permission, making it difficult to control clusters springing up in residential areas.

It says the 56-day period for councils to consider an application before it is automatically accepted is not enough to carry out adequate consultation within the community.

The letter was prompted by a proposal from Orpington councillor Chris Maines at the council meeting on June 14, who asked the Government publish up-to-date health advice on masts.

He is also calling for planning permission to be required for all but the tiniest signal boosters and public consultation be improved.

Orpington Residents Against Masts (RAM) has welcomed the action but says it should have happened long ago.

Member Sue Green said: "I'm pleased to hear this but it's a case of too little too late. It should have happened four years ago."

The council is also enlisting the help of the borough's MPs.

Orpington MP John Horam said: "This is essential and I will be writing in support of Bromley Council.

"It is wrong masts which are almost 15ft high do not require planning permission."

The independent Stewart Committee, headed by Sir William Stewart in 2000, recommended tighter planning laws as a precaution because the effects of the masts were still unknown.

This was echoed by the new chairman of the committee Professor Lawrie Challis in January, who says the health risk cannot be ruled out because not enough research has been conducted.

A SCIENTIFIC researcher says residents are being directly affected by high levels of mobile mast radiation found in their homes.

Ingrid Dickenson, director of scientific studies at anti-phone mast group Mast Sanity, recorded high levels of the radiation in four homes near to the 3G mast antennaes in Chislehurst Road , Orpington.

Residents, who have been campaigning for four years to remove the phone mast, say they have been suffering from headaches, sleeplessness and dizziness.

Mrs Dickenson says these symptoms, which also include tinnitus and nose bleeds, are the effects of non-thermal mobile mast radiation.

Susan Green, 40, and her 10-year-old son Christian, have been experiencing the symptoms since the 3G antennaes were put up in March.

They say the link between the masts and their ill health was confirmed a fortnight ago when they were switched off for a week's maintenance and their complaints disappeared.

Mrs Dickenson has been working on phone mast emissions with radiation experts from Europe and America since 1995.

She says the Government's current advice on mobile masts is misguided.

Mrs Dickenson said: "They say mobile phone radiation is not high enough to heat the body so is therefore safe.

"The National Radiological Protection Board is stubbornly refusing to look at the non-thermal effects.

"But non-thermal radiation does have a real effect, with the first symptoms being sleep disturbance, headaches and nosebleeds."

Mrs Green said: "I was not expecting the readings to be sky high. The news is devastating for me and my son."

Her next door neighbour Heather Lewis said: "My family have been suffering from headaches and sleeplessness.

"Mrs Dickenson's readings showed our bedroom was saturated with pulse radiation.

"I'm now going to buy metallic blinds to stop the radiation from coming through the window."

Hundreds of campaigning residents were celebrating today after a mobile phone company was banned from erecting a mast in their neighbourhood.

Planning bosses at Preston Council turned down an application from T-Mobile for a 14.7m mast on Granton Walk, Ingol, Preston. It followed a mass objection from people in the area concerned about their health and its closeness to homes, schools and a church.

They were also worried that it could become a target for vandalism. A total of 268 people put their names to two petitions and a further 21 sent letters of objection to the council.

T-Mobile wanted to erect the mast, looking like a telegraph pole, next to a parade of shops with flats above.

A report to the planning committee said: "The proposed mast would be situated in a prominent position close to residential properties and, by way of its siting and appearance, would be detrimental to the amenities of local residents and passers-by.

"It would be uncomfortably close to neighbouring residents and such a prominent mast would be visually intrusive.

"A number of objections raised have concerned the perceived threat to health associated with such developments."

The application, which included three antennae, a transmission dish and equipment cabinets, was unanimously rejected by members of the planning committee.

Terence Felton, 75, who lives on Tag Lane , opposite the proposed site, said: "Nobody can say whether it's going affect health or not. "There were certain people who said if it goes up it would be straight down. "If it's been stopped, then I'm pleased."

Mr Felton, who runs Felton's Yard, an army surplus store on Lincoln Street , off Deepdale Road , Preston , said: "I'm in business and I can't put signs up in the street."

On behalf of the residents, Coun Bill Shannon, who represents Ingol, raised the matter with the planning committee. He said: "Twelve months ago we had two masts in Ingol – we now have five."

Coun Shannon said he had also met bosses from T-Mobile and drove round the area with them to look at alternative sites on wasteland, away from homes.

An application for a 12m high mast outside St Margaret's Church, on nearby Tag Lane, was refused in February 2003 for similar reasons.

A spokesman for T-Mobile said: "We are disappointed with the decision as we work hard with local communities and planning authorities to find suitable locations for the siting of masts. "We will review the situation, however. We have not decided on next steps at this stage."

SPD und Grüne tun so, als hätten die sieben Jahre ihrer Regierungszeit gar nicht stattgefunden. In dieser Zeit wurden Kapitalgesellschaften massiv steuerlich entlastet, der Spitzensteuersatz erheblich gesenkt und auf eine Neuregelung der Vermögen- und Erbschaftssteuer verzichtet.

Wenn beide nun eine Millionärssteuer als vermeintlichen Wahlkampfschlager aus der Taufe heben, ist das zugleich ein Offenbarungseid für die bisherige Politik. Denn für eine angemessene Beteiligung von Vermögenden und Spitzenverdienern an der Finanzierung des Gemeinwesens hatten SPD und Grüne in den letzten Jahren ausreichend Zeit. Stattdessen aber hat Rot-Grün die öffentliche Hand ins finanzielle Desaster getrieben und zugleich den Sozialstaat in immer schnellerem Tempo abgebaut. Wenn nun auf dessen Ruinen ein Fähnlein der sozialen Gerechtigkeit gehisst werden soll, ist das schon makaber.

So richtig die Forderung nach einer stärkeren steuerlichen Belastung von Spitzenverdienern ist, so halbherzig sind die Vorschläge von SPD und Grünen. Vor allem aber kommen sie zu spät. Politik nach der Haltet-den-Dieb-Methode funktioniert nicht. Wer so auf die Vergesslichkeit der Wählerinnen und Wähler hofft, will sie für dumm verkaufen.

Die PDS bleibt dabei: Steuergerechtigkeit wird es ohne Wiedereinführung der Vermögensteuer und ohne einen Spitzensteuersatz, der diesen Namen auch verdient, nicht geben.

How convenient to focus on the future when the past is a compelling indictment of criminal and immoral behavior. If it were an adequate explanation, then Richard Nixon would have completed his second term, Lyndon Johnson would have sought reelection, and the Nuremberg trials would not have been convened. Beyond the incredulity of the president’s response to a growing body of evidence that his administration cooked the books to justify an illegal and unjustified war, the crime is not limited to the past. It is ongoing and has no end in sight. When you are caught in the process of committing a crime, whether it is a common burglary or a war of naked aggression, you do not ask leave to consummate the act. Should this be any less apparent when there are hundreds of thousands of lives in the balance?

On June 14, Andrea Mitchell, NBC’s chief foreign affairs correspondent, gave her take on mainstream media (MSM) coverage of the Downing Street Memo (DSM). She said, “There have been anti-war groups and anti-Bush groups who’ve tried to generate this [coverage] on the Internet, but . . . there’s no smoking gun here,” because “if you go back to Bush’s own comments [in 2002], you had to be brain-dead not to know what he was up to.” On June 15, The Washington Post took the same position, even more emphatically: “The memos add not a single fact to what was previously known about the administration’s prewar deliberations.” This might come as a surprise to George Bush and Tony Blair, who were claiming as recently as last week that war with Iraq was, as they claimed in July, 2002, a last resort undertaken only after all other options were exhausted. In their joint press conference on June 7, George Bush answered his first question about the DSM saying, “And somebody said, well, you know, we had made up our mind to go to use military force to deal with Saddam. Nothing could be farther from the truth. . . . Look, both of us didn’t want to use our military. Nobody wants to commit military into combat. It’s the last option.”...

In his memoir of Vietnam, former war correspondent Jacques Leslie recalls visiting an American aircraft carrier in the South China Sea, when suddenly "I was engulfed in technology, released to a vast metallic universe where nothing grew, where doubt had no place." The young reporter for the Los Angeles Times found that "the press officers who took turns accompanying me could tell me all about the astonishing mechanics of jet takeoffs and landings, of how the pilots got graded on their bombing accuracy, but they couldn't say if the pilots thought of people below as they dropped their bombs or ever felt regret. Most of the pilots couldn't tell me either, preferring to dwell on the marvels of their flying machines." American media coverage has long glorified such marvels, and the hype about military technology remains profuse. What happens to people on the other side of the awesome firepower is downplayed or ignored, while the awesome weaponry is often presented as implicit further evidence of America's greatness. It's hardly objective reporting. Nor is it in any way good, old- fashioned skeptical reporting. Nor does it tell the whole story. It's mostly mindless cheerleading that avoids asking readers or viewers to think about the terrible carnage and horribly ruined lives the use of such weapons causes...

“We went to war because we were attacked,” President Bush said Saturday in his weekly radio address. Yeah, by al-Qaeda not Iraq. For President Bush to say publicly that the United States attacked Iraq because of 9/11 is not only an outright lie but it's a disservice to the over 1,700 men and women that died in combat in Iraq and thousands of other soldiers who were maimed believing they were fighting a war predicated on finding weapons of mass destruction. There have been no less than half-a-dozen federal probes into 9/11 all of which have concluded that there wasn't a link between the al-Qaeda terrorists who blew up the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and Saddam Hussein's regime. But Bush is desperate. His ratings have slipped below 50 percent. The public is growing tired of the Iraq war. Republicans in Congress fear that a further decline in the president's poll numbers could hurt their chances of being reelected next year. What to do? Once again, get the public to believe Iraq was responsible for 9/11 and that the war was justified. In other words, lie...

I think it’s safe to say the mainstream media (MSM) are having a very hard time with the Downing Street Memos (DSM). I know the corporate media are not our friends, but I’m still stunned by the hostility the DSM seem to arouse in (for want of a better word) journalists. It ranges from Frank Rich, one of the good guys, who nevertheless needed to be told by Al Franken that “conventional wisdom” aside, it still matters whether or not Bush lied about taking the country to war. By the time Rich wrote his latest New York Times column last Sunday, he had clearly returned to consciousness, but his attitude is indicative of the air reporters have to breathe, their unreal, hot-house reality. No one is immune to the mind-altering effects of our experiment in neural media saturation, least of all the practitioners of the art of mass thought control...

Somebody, please, send Robert Pape's book to Bush. Pape, the director of the Chicago Project on Suicide Terrorism at the University of Chicago, has arrived at a conclusion Bush needs to understand, although it is contrary to what he believes, or what he tells us he believes. "Suicide bombings are part of a conscious strategy that has a record of success in other places. Suicide bombing has gained adherents not because so many fanatics are looking for an excuse to throw away their lives, but because it works," is how Steve Chapman, writing for the Baltimore Sun, summarizes Pape's research. Bush seems to believe that if the corporate media ignores suicide bombing, the suicide bombers will go away because, after all, the act is simply a demented craving for media attention. "A conservative columnist for The New York Times has suggested that the media simply cease coverage of suicide bombings," writes Joe Conason for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "It was a strange proposal from someone working at one of the world's most important news organizations, but one that aptly reflected current attitudes in the White House, the Defense Department and much of official Washington.... Both President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney evidently believe their own uplifting rhetoric and brusque dismissals of criticism. They won't let reality-based analysis intrude on their faith-based perspective."...

Even by the abysmal standards of the Administration, Bush’s Saturday radio address hit a new low in fear mongering and duplicity. Invoking the musty imagery of 9-11, the Prince of Mendacity once again articulated the worn vision of America at war with the world. “I will continue to focus on ways to insure that America prevails in the war on terror…protecting our citizens from those who would do us harm.” Presumably, the President’s antidote involves alienating allies, inflaming half the American electorate, savaging the military, vanquishing the economy and creating the most prolific breeding ground for terrorism the world has ever seen...
