Secrets of the Drugs Industry

HYPERTENSION: A 'Disease' To Please The Drug Companies

Drug companies need growing markets, and for that they need diseases and health problems.

One very lucrative example is hypertension, or high blood pressure, which because of the way it's now being defined affects around 40 per cent of the population in the West.

There's even a new class of 'disease' called pre-hypertension.

All of this is wonderful news to the drugs industry. The global hypertension market in 2002 was worth around US$36 billion, with the top four antihypertensives alone generating annual sales of US$8 billion.

Not that the more liberal definition, agreed in America by the U.S. Joint National Committee on the Treatment and Prevention of Hypertension, is helping to prevent heart disease.

A patient with hypertension is no more likely to develop a heart condition than someone who hasn't been classified with high blood pressure.

This throws up another interesting fact - there's no necessary causal connection between heart problems and high blood pressure, except possibly at the very high end of the spectrum.

So why does medicine keep chasing the hypertension myth?

It's partly historical, says Prof S McMahon from the University of Sydney, and it grew from concern about malignant hypertension, a genuinely serious, but very rare, condition.

But don't expect any change in the near future.

Commercial pressures from the drugs industry are too great for that, he says. (Source: The Lancet, 2005; 365: 1108-9).

Gas War

THIS WILL WORK!!!!! It will not take long once enough people get involved. It can be enhanced by picketing Exxon (the double cross company - and Mobile. They will start complaining almost immediately.

I know of nothing else that is practical! Please forward to everyone you know. I don't care if I get it back from a dozen sources.

Billy-Joe: Mauldin

Gas War, Let's Get Serious !!!!

Subject: FW: GAS WAR - email that just might work

This was sent by my brother-in-law, a retired Coke executive. It came from one of his engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton. It is worth you consideration. Coleman

Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit close to $3.00 a gallon by the summer and it might go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action.

Phillip Hollsworth, offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join with us! By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.09 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost! of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50- $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace....not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action.

The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

How?

Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers. If those three million get excited and ! pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.

(If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am ... so trust me on this one.)

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference.

If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN.

THIS CAN REALLY WORK. Kerry Lyle, Director, Research Coordinator

Debtors of the World, Unite

"Debtors of the World, Unite!" (The "bankruptcy reform" bill "passed the House on a 302-126 vote on Thursday, a month after the Senate voted 74-25." It is time for the American wing of the global justice movement, which has been struggling to force the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to drop the debt under which peasants and workers of the global South groan, to take on the finance and credit industry that oppresses US workers by usury.

Why not begin this weekend, when global justice activists gather in Washington D.C. to protest the 2005 Spring Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund? Unless and until US activists of the global justice movement begin to connect the debt burden on US workers with that on workers and peasants in poor nations, the movement will never grow beyond usual suspects. Charity, an exercise in altruism, need not begin at home, but class struggle that has a winning chance surely does.) -- FULL TEXT:

Could Cell Phone Radiation Be a Vitamin for Your Brain?

I am more concerned about the Salford "dark neuron" effect resulting in early onset dementia rather than brain tumours. There is a significant increase (I don't have actual figures but some hospitals have been setting up early-onset dementia units to support people in their 40's and 50's) in early onset dementias and two of the (ex) BT heavy users developed early onset dementia in their late 30's. I have also had quite a few sales reps and self-employed business people who use their phone a lot saying that they are having increasing difficulty in remembering things and concentrating.

A vast "ga-ga" population would be a large drain on the world's and health people's resources.

As far as I know this work has yet to be repeated by other researchers which is inexcusable seeing how important the implications are.

--------

At first sight both the Swedish and Danish studies are just another of those "No effect" articles the industry and their friends regularly publish as a counterbalance to the independent studies that show that there are biological or health effects. Actually these 2 epidemiological studies show that there is an effect, but no explanation. During the these years whenever an independent scientist published work showing Non-thermal effects or the existence of "windows", they, the industry and their helpers, always denounced it as being incredible, unreliable, never replicated, bad science, or simply ignored it. However these 2 studies show that there are "Windows", almost similar to what e.g. Salford and others found. So how credible are these studies or is it our turn to smile at them now?

On the other hand I do not think that a direct comparison can be made between these epidemiological studies and the previous biological studies mentioned. Those were biological studies and here there can be negative or positive or no effects. Both negative and positive effects, even when apparently insignificant show there is a biological effect and certainly a matter of concern. It is only a matter of intensity and time. Biological effects are certainly a warning for future health hazards. These epidemiological studies cannot give rise to any conclusions or recommendations. However, it suits the industry perfectly, because it gives them another reason to harp on the same string "Scientists cannot agree - there is no proof - more studies are required".

MyMo cellphone for kids pulled off the market

Story added: 16 Jan 2005 14:41.

There hasn’t been a massive epidemic of brain cancer—yet—but there’s definitely been one casualty related to all those recent reports about mobiles being dangerous for children. British company Communic8 has opted not to face a future firestorm of public controversy, and is killing the MyMo, their line of phones aimed at children ages 4 to 8.

The move is in response to a report issued by the National Radiological Board that concludes that even though there isn’t much concrete evidence indicating that mobile handset radiation is causing health problems, the risk of health problems remains and that children should be shielded from that risk.

I have never understood why a 5 year old needs a mobile, what's wrong with a PDA

Frist Set to Use Religious Stage on Judicial Issue

by DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK

Published: April 15, 2005

New York Times

WASHINGTON, April 14 - As the Senate heads toward a showdown over the rules governing judicial confirmations, Senator Bill Frist, the majority leader, has agreed to join a handful of prominent Christian conservatives in a telecast portraying Democrats as "against people of faith" for blocking President Bush's nominees.

Fliers for the telecast, organized by the Family Research Council and scheduled to originate at a Kentucky megachurch the evening of April 24, call the day "Justice Sunday" and depict a young man holding a Bible in one hand and a gavel in the other. The flier does not name participants, but under the heading "the filibuster against people of faith," it reads: "The filibuster was once abused to protect racial bias, and it is now being used against people of faith." Detained Without Charge

One problem I have with all of this is the time, effort and money that the Justice Department, CIA, Secret Service, and who knows who else, are spending on these kinds of "victories" against terrorism. If they can't find real villains, they need a different plan rather than continued intimidation and removal of our constitutional rights.

Detained Without Charge

The Nation

Several weeks ago, two 16 year-old Muslim girls, one from Bangladesh and the other from Guinea, were arrested in New York City on the specious grounds that they were potential suicide bombers. Neither of the girls has been formally charged with any crime, but both have been detained indefinitely in facilities far away from their homes and families.

As Ari Berman reported yesterday, few details about the arrests have been released. What we do know, however, suggests that the charges could well be completely unfounded.

While both of the girls are in the United States illegally, both have also lived here for most of their lives. The lead editorial in yesterday's New York Times reveals that investigator's suspicions are curiously based on an essay written by one of the girls in her high school--an essay arguing that suicide is a violation of Islamic law. And while investigators maintain that the two suspects are friends who attended the same radical Mosque where they plotted together, their families say that they never even met before their arrests. Request paper ballots from Your U.S.State & County Election Offices

Great New Easy Tool developed by a volunteer programmer at US Count Votes. Please use it and tell your friends.

Please forward this link so everyone you know can use it to easily write their Election offices in support of Paper Ballots.
http://electionarchive.net/public/ucv_select_info.php

It is urgent, especially in states and counties which are in the process of selecting voting equipment.

Quickly generate a pre-addressed one page letter to any state or county election official requesting Paper Ballots (Not DREs). (All but three states' ready now.)

http://uscountvotes.net/public/ucv_select_info.php

Select a State and, if desired, a County, and print a Pre-Addressed Letter. Then simply fill in your name and address using a pen, fold, stamp, and mail.

There is also an option to change the addresses and links to US House and Senate contact info.

Please forward this to voters you know in all states.

Let's flood Election Offices with letters requesting Paper Ballots and Not DREs which could easily miscount votes due to errors, electronic failures, and manipulation, with no way to do an independent recount.

Thank you.

Create Op-scan Paper Ballot Petition

Send a DRE Protest Letter to your Election Officials Now:

http://uscountvotes.net/scripts/lettergen/ltr_pick_addressee.php

As we speak, states and counties all over America are quickly spending their Help America Vote Act Funds to buy new voting equipment prior to 2006.

HAVA will fund only DRE or Op-Scan voting systems. States and Counties will therefore be buying DRE or Op-Scan voting systems.
An Op-Scan system has a paper ballot that is hand- recountable by our own election officials. A DRE voting machine does not.
If we sit by now and allow DREs to be purchased, then:

1. Our elections WILL be corrupted by undetectable and uncorrectable electronic failures, errors, and manipulations.

2. Extra millions of dollars will be thrown away on systems that cost more to maintain, secure, and upgrade. (Instead HAVA funds can be used to develop procedures to secure electronic voter registration rolls, to develop information systems to report detailed election information for auditing election results, and to develop a database of election rules, procedures, and laws to help voters, poll workers, and election officials.)

3. Voters will have longer lines at the polls.

4. Elections will depend on unachievable electronic reliability, consistent power supply, and climate controlled polling locations.

5. Voters will not be able to electronically verify that their ballots will be counted correctly as even the disabled could with some opscan paper ballot voting systems.

Patriots, we must stop states and counties from purchasing DRE voting machines NOW.

Create a letter to your Election official that you can simply print, fill in your name and address, and mail:

http://uscountvotes.net/scripts/lettergen/ltr_pick_addressee.php

Please pass this DRE protest letter on and link to it from your web site, so that every county and state election office in America is flooded with letters requesting Hand-recountable Paper Ballots.

PHONE MAST IS REJECTED FOR SECOND TIME

Essex Chronicle

http://www.essexchronicle.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=170875&command=displayContent&sourceNode=170757&contentPK=12228642

18:00 - 14 April 2005

Plans for a mobile phone mast in Tolleshunt D'Arcy have been rejected for a second time. Telecommunications company Orange applied for planning permission for the 10m mast from Maldon District Council's north western area planning committee on Monday night.

Orange submitted an almost identical application to the one that was rejected last year, hoping to site the mast on the junction of Beckingham Road and Festival Gardens. The only difference between the two applications is the height. Last time the phone company were asking permission for a 12m pole.

Phone companies need not apply for planning permission to erect masts under 15m, they simply have to give a detailed notification to the council concerned. But the council can call for a planning application on the grounds of siting or appearance.

Monday night's committee decided a planning application was necessary, so the notification automatically became a planning application, which they rejected.

Rebecca D'Arcy, from Orange, said it was unlikely Orange would lodge an appeal.

"What's more likely is we will go back to the drawing board and look at other options and areas, as we have identified a need in the area.

"Obviously we are disappointed because we had reduced the height to try and minimise visual impact and had hoped to get this through."

Iraq Quagmire Is Impoverishing Our Nation

National Bus Tour Calls Budget a Moral Document

Martin Luther King Jr. knew that foreign military adventures steal resources from our cities and our children. A new generation of spiritual leaders is taking that message to America - please Help Them.

The missing piece is falling into place.

Religious leaders from across the country are beginning to raise the voice of their moral authority in a newly formed organization, Clergy and Laity Concerned About Iraq. Representing more than 50 denominations running the gamut of Christians, Jews, Muslims and then some, it was launched with a major event at New York's Riverside Church on the anniversary of Martin Luther King's speech that he called "Beyond Vietnam," in which he said:

"I knew that America would never invest the necessary funds or energies in rehabilitation of its poor so long as adventures like Vietnam continue to draw men and skills and money like one demonic, destructive sucking tube."

Substitute Iraq for Vietnam, and Martin's prophetic words of April 4, 1967, apply just as painfully today.

The group has begun a national bus tour of religious leaders, with the potential to capture the attention of the media and counter the influence of the religious right. It can be a catalyst that can turn the tide of our nation's drift to darkness instead toward the light of goodness.

But these committed, courageous religious leaders are long on faith and short on money. A national bus tour is expensive. It'll cost $100,000 to conduct. If you want to stop this crazy war of choice, support our troops by bringing them home, and get our nation to spend its tax dollars in accordance with our values, please, please, please give what you can.

From the Riverside Church in New York,

Ben

Parents protest against mobile mast menace

15 April 2005

Caroline McClatchey

WORRIED parents in Highgate have formed an action group to stop a mobile-phone mast going up near their children's school. Mobile-phone giant O2 wants to put a 12.5m mast on the pavement in Aylmer Road, just 200m from Highgate Primary School in North Hill.

Lead campaigner Andrea Klein, who has a son at the 366-pupil school, held a crisis meeting with headteacher Gill Pinkerton and the chair of governors on Wednesday.

- Ignored:

She said: "We are forming an action group and we are definitely going to let O2 know that the school is not prepared to allow for a beam of greatest intensity to fall on its grounds. "We are concerned about the biological impact and the associated health risks of the waves. "Until there's conclusive evidence, a precautionary approach should be adopted. We would like any mast to be as far as possible from any school."

As the mast is under 15m, O2 only require what is known as a general permitted development order, falling short of full planning permission. The application for a third-generation (3G) mast in Aylmer Road has been lodged with Haringey Council.

Jim Stevenson, O2's community relations manager, said: "It's a pity we weren't invited to the meeting on Wednesday. We want to speak to people; we are not completely wedded to sites. "We encourage people to suggest alternative sites. We haven't got planning permission yet; as soon as we do, the mast will go up in the next month or so. We did write to a lot of people in the area through our consultation process, but we didn't get anything back. "I have since received complaints to which I have replied."

Mrs Klein has recently joined protest group Muswell Hill Against the Masts, which is opposed to masts near Haringey schools. To sign the petition against the O2 mast contact

(dpa)

Why the US attacked Iraq

04/14/05

The only way to avoid the catastrophe of war is if each person accepts that no person, or group of persons, even if they call themselves politicians and leaders, may use their freedom to violate the freedom of another person. People must accept that it is wrong to kill innocent foreigners, to destroy their property, and that killing and stealing for the state is just as wrong as an individual killing and stealing. It is not patriotic to follow the criminal dictates of parasitic leaders who use blind obedience to violate the rights of others. The only hope for America is that her people will lose their collectivist herd mentality inculcated by the state and its indoctrination centers, reject the state and its minions as the slavers of humanity they are, and accept individualism and the responsibility to direct their own life in voluntary cooperation, association, and trade...

Contradictions of the anti-war movement

04/14/05

For starters, supporting the troops, for those in the antiwar movement, involves a completely separate paradigm then that of the flag waving right-wing fanatics that support the war. The fact is, the righties have hijacked the 'support the troops' slogan. But it's just a ploy. When the antiwar movement says 'support the troops,' what we are really saying is, 'don't send our soldiers off to die for an unjust cause.' Unlike the hawkish pro-war faction here in the US, our views are political, and in fact ethical in nature. They are also tactical. Opposing our troops actions, while supporting them, may seem contradictory. Even so, on a human level, the antiwar movement needs to deal with the fact that people are complex and contradictory beings, and that is why our support for the troops implies dealing with the soldiers as human beings...

Welcome to Bush World

04/14/05

After 51 months, America has come to know, if not understand, the George Bush philosophy. The Administration's trademark has been its pragmatism; rather than be strategically ideological, it is tactically political. As a consequence, its record is riddled with inconsistencies; for example, it has railed against big government but promoted the growth of massive federal bureaucracies in defense and homeland security. Viewed from afar the Bush legacy appears as a collage of conservative concepts stitched together by clever politics; a philosophy best described as a baroque theme park -- Bush World -- filled with thrill rides and exhibits driven by self-serving values...

There they go again: Tax and spend

04/14/05

I get a troubling sense of deja vu as I watch the antics in Olympia this year. It seems as if 1993 is happening all over again as the Democrat-controlled Legislature and the governor try to find innovative ways to take more money from their constituents' pockets and outbid themselves in a spending fest. The ink is barely dry on the 2004 election returns and even the control of the governorship is still being contested in the courts, but the promises of the 2004 campaigns are being buried in the quest to spend ever more of our hard-earned dollars...

One day too early: Do presidents lie?

04/11/05

On March 31, 2005, the national news media carried a news clip showing President George W. Bush vehemently attacking U.S. Intelligence agencies for giving him faulty information about the secret weapons of mass destruction that Saddam Hussein had supposedly stashed away in Iraq prior to Bush's order to invade that now-destroyed country. The idea he so effectively communicated was that any blame for attacking Iraq should be placed on the miscreant intelligence agencies, and not on himself. Bush's self-righteous defense of his innocence is based on a special commission report that Bush himself ordered. ... [T]he surprising outcome of the report is that Mr. Bush is completely innocent, and it is our intelligence agencies that are at fault for the mess he has created in Iraq. Good try, Mr. Bush!, but you should have waited one more day before launching such an April Fool's Day story!

Why American politics has gone nuts

Have you noticed? There doesn’t appear to be any room for civil discourse in politics these days. There is no issue about which the disputing parties merely argue -- the other side just has to be vicious, lying, deceiving, cheating, wishing simply to hurt some people, moved by mendacity while we are, of course, pure of heart. There isn't a discussion of the merits, the pros and the cons, only of who is evil, who is not...

A draft FAQ

04/14/05

Over the last couple of years, there's been a lot of talk concerning the possible return of a military draft. That shouldn't be surprising. The time from 9/11 to the present marks the first period of sustained military conflict for the US since Vietnam. President Bush has described his foreign policy approach as one of 'generational commitment.' The more fevered advocates of the 'war on terror' are fond of using terms like 'World War IV' and 'global democratic revolution.' The reality of the situation, and the terms in which it is described, certainly encourage us to think about whether or not a draft lies just over the horizon...

Liberals, conservatives and taxation

04/15/05

When liberals say that they don't mind paying taxes, they only mind what the taxes are used for, they're uttering a contradiction, or, perhaps, admitting to enjoying being robbed. And they're revealing a profound misunderstanding about the nature of taxation. Once we understand that taxation is, by its essence, the coercive expropriation of wealth and redirection of it into places people did not voluntarily put their money, it becomes a given that the system will be abused -- or, more accurately, that the abusive system will be used -- and that the money will naturally go from those who need it to those with political connections. With this understanding it is no surprise that someone like George W. Bush, who famously couldn't keep his own businesses afloat, is now in charge of the largest budget ever accumulated in the history of the world...

Cashing in on the Bush Doctrine

04/15/05

War, as Randolph Bourne famously pointed out, is the health of the State -- but it sickens and kills the rest of us. A few profit greatly, while the majority must pay -- in tax dollars and the blood of our children. Remember that, this Tax Day, when you mail that check off, made payable to the U.S. Treasury. Imagine if you had to make it out to, say, Trireme Partners, or Hillman Capital, or Boeing-Lockheed-Martin-Whomever directly -- think what a difference in perception that would make. Because that's what's really going on. The redistribution of wealth from the lower and middle classes to a government-connected financial elite: that's not laissez-faire capitalism, or anything close to free-market economics -- that's political plutocracy...

Surveilling the surveillers

04/14/05

Surveilling the surveillers. It's an idea that Number 6, the nameless hero of the classic British TV show The Prisoner, would have loved. In an attempt to establish equity in the world of surveillance, participants at the Computers, Freedom and Privacy conference in Seattle this week took to the streets to ferret out surveillance cameras and turn the tables on offensive eyes taking their picture. Following wearable computing guru Steve Mann into a downtown Seattle shopping mall, about two dozen conference attendees, some of them armed with handheld cameras, snapped photos of smoked-glass ceiling domes in Nordstrom and Gap stores, which may or may not have contained cameras. ... In the stores, as conference attendees snapped pictures of three smoked domes in the ceiling of a Mont Blanc pen shop, an employee inside waved his arms overhead. The intruders interpreted his gesture as happy excitement at being photographed until a summoned security guard halted the photography...

http://omega.twoday.net/stories/242821/

Cops caught doctoring video of RNC arrests

New York: Cops caught doctoring video of RNC arrests

04/14/05

During last year's Republican National Convention, the city of New York witnessed some of the largest mass arrests in the city's history. 1800 people were arrested. But now the cases against the vast majority of the arrested have fallen apart. Of the nearly 1700 cases that have run their full course, 91 percent ended with charges dismissed or with a verdict of not guilty. The New York Times reported earlier this week that in some 400 cases charges were dropped because video recordings emerged showing that the arrested had not committed a crime or that the charges against them could not be proved. In at least one case video evidence was doctored. During court proceedings, the police presented a video of the arrest of a man named Alexander Dunlop. It turned out that the video presented by the police was edited in two spots -- images that showed Dunlop acting peacefully were removed...

House Republicans kill plan to change ethics rules

04/14/05

House Republicans brushed aside the Democrats' latest attempt to rewrite ethics rules today, one day after a closed-door discussion that touched on the perils of political arrogance. The vote was 218-195, along party lines, to kill the proposal by Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader. The California Democrat swiftly issued a statement accusing Republicans of showing 'allegiance to the ethics standards of Tom DeLay.' DeLay, the majority leader, is battling charges of misconduct...

What a good article this was for objections to planning! I have saved the article in its entirety with all the photos, because, as Ingrid said, a picture says more than words!

On a more serious side this shows the damage it causes to our environment and the Earth is struggling now. This is why native Americans and other indiginous groups are holding World-wide prayers and are attempting to re-educate other nations.
