Antenne wird nicht erstellt

Die Vorsteherschaft der Katholischen Kirchgemeinde Frauenfeld sieht das Zusammenleben in der Kirchgemeinde gefährdet und handelt. Die Natelantenne an der Häberlinstrasse darf nun doch nicht erstellt werden.

Frauenfeld - Nun zeigt das Bauvisier für die Mobilfunkantenne an der Häberlinstrasse 19 ein Projekt an, das nicht realisiert wird: Die Katholische Kirchgemeinde Frauenfeld als Landeigentümerin hat am 16. November entschieden, das Baugesuch für die Kommunikationsanlage der Swisscom zurückzuziehen. Wie die Vorsteherschaft in einem Brief an das Departement für Bau und Umwelt schreibt, sind das Baugesuch und die Baubewilligung auf «eine überraschend grosse Opposition in der Bevölkerung und der Kirchgemeinde gestossen, was die Behörde nun zu Beginn des Rekursverfahrens veranlasste, die Situation zu überprüfen». Es sei zudem davon auszugehen, dass das Baugesuch bei einer Abstimmung an einer Kirchgemeindeversammlung zurückgezogen werden müsste. Wie Kirchenpräsident Joseph A. Müggler auf Anfrage ausführte, hat es wegen der Einwilligung der Vorsteherschaft zum Baugesuch neben beachtlichem Ärger vereinzelt auch Kirchenaustritte gegeben.

«Bedingungen erfüllt»

Im Rückzugsschreiben werden die Anliegen der Rekurrenten als «primär psychologische Aspekte» bezeichnet. Müggler begründete diese Aussage mit dem Hinweis, wonach der vorgesehene Standort an der Häberlinstrasse die technischen Bedingungen für die Platzierung einer solchen Antennenanlage erfüllt. Allerdings wären die finanziellen Vorteile des Mietvertrags gegenüber einem guten Einvernehmen in der Kirchgemeinde und mit der übrigen Bevölkerung unterzuordnen. Auch mache es keinen Sinn, das Rekursverfahren «unnötig zu verlängern», sagte Müggler weiter.

Zufriedenheit bei Gegnerschaft

Und wie nehmen die Antennen-Gegner die Meldung vom Rückzug des Baugesuchs auf? Stephan Geiges vom Komitee: «Für uns ist die Sache damit erledigt. Es ist einfach schade, dass man erst viel Geld für Rechtsstreitigkeiten aufwerfen muss.»

Nachdem der Stadtrat die 13 Einsprachen gegen die Mobilfunkantenne abgewiesen hatte, organisierten sich die insgesamt 321 Einsprecher in einem Komitee, das gegen die Baubewilligung beim Departement für Bau und Umwelt einen Rekurs einreichte (die TZ berichtete).

Bedenken gegen den Sender im Kirchturm schweißt Eltern zur einer Bürger-Initiative zusammen. Am WZ-Bus wieder scharfe Kritik.

Krefeld. Eines ist klar: Mit dem bereits vor vier Jahren mit zwei Mobilfunkbetreibern abgeschlossenen Mietvertrag hat sich der Kirchenvorstand von Christus König in Verberg keine Freunde gemacht. Am WZ-Bus herrschte gestern Mittag ein erwartungsgemäß großer Andrang von Müttern, die ihre Kinder in den städtischen Kindergarten an der Zwingenbergstraße und im selben Gebäude untergebrachte Tagesstätte "Hexenkessel" schicken.

Es sieht auch nicht so aus, dass sich die Eltern nun formiert in der "Bürgerinitiative Verberg für verantwortungsvollen Mobilfunk" beim Hearing mit der Stadt am 13. Dezember von Netzbetreiber-Fachleuten eines Besseren belehren lassen werden. Grundsätzlich sei man nicht gegen das mobile Telefonieren aber in den Kirchturm gehöre die Sendeanlage nicht.

"In der Schweiz und in den Niederlanden wird mit der Strahlung von solchen Sendeanlagen viel sensibler umgegangen als in Deutschland", weiß Dorothea Coopmans, deren zwei Enkel die privat betriebene Tagesstätte Hexenkessel besuchen. "Enttäuscht sind wir, wie der von uns gewählte Kirchenvorstand mit dem Thema umgeht. Von dem kam nicht eine Information." Ihre Tochter Tanja Coopmans-Elfes fügt an: "Es gibt keinen Zweifel, dass ein Teil der elektromagnetischen Strahlen die beiden Kindergärten erfassen wird."

Zudem habe der Umweltschutzbeauftragte des Bistums früher erklärt, dass bei sensiblen Standorten von Sendemasten in kirchlichen Einrichtungen Aachen entscheide. "Jetzt heißt es auf einmal, das sei eine Angelegenheit der jeweiligen Gemeinde." Martina Kuschel von der Eltern-Initiative "Hexenkessel" vermutet hinter allem "eine gezielte Politik der Mobilfunkanbieter: Die Gemeinde hat da mitgemacht. In St. Gertrudis in Bockum weiß auch doch kaum jemand, dass es dort einen Sender im Kirchturm gibt".

Susanne Brinkel stellt klar: "Wir sind doch nicht grundsätzlich gegen Mobilfunk." Für sich hat sie allerdings Konsequenzen gezogen: "Ich hab` mein Handy abgemeldet." Ihr missfällt der Druck , den der Kirchenvorstandsvorsitzende ausübe, in dem er die Stelle der Pfarrsekretärin zur Disposition stellt, sollten die Mieteinnahmen durch die Sendeanlage ausfallen. Bettina Rösken, Leiterin des "Hexenkessels": "Wir erhielten den Brief von der Stadt als die Regulierungsbehörde den Standort bereits genehmigt hatte."

Sie bedauert, dass für die Kirche nur der "wirtschaftliche Profit" zähle. Und: "Wer wusste denn vor 20 Jahren, dass Asbest Krebs verursacht?" Inzwischen hätte sich ein Viersener Kindergarten mit gleichem Problem gemeldet. "Wenn der Sender kommt, geht mein Kind hier nicht zur Erstkommunion", kündigt Nathalie Münstermann an. Dieter Döll (66) wohnt 150 Meter von der Kirche entfernt. "Es gibt keine gesicherten Ergebnisse, ob die Strahlung eine Gefahr darstellt.

Sein Nachbar Karl Schwingen (77) pflichtet ihm bei und wundert sich: "Für die neue Orgel wurden in den letzten vier Jahren knapp 300 000 Euro gesammelt. Dagegen sind die 7000 Euro Mieteinnahmen jährlich ein Klacks."

Dorothee Müller meint, dass die Kirche nicht ein Ort sein sollte, von dem Ängste ausgehen. Die Kirche propagiert den Schutz ungeborenen Lebens, nimmt aber für Geld in Kauf, dass Kleinkinder gefährdet werden." Edith Bernigau und ihr Mann Lutz verließen am Samstagabend "wutschnaubend die Vorabendmesse", weil der Pfarrer nur ganz am Rande auf das Thema eingegangen sei. "Die Kirche ist nicht dazu da, den Leuten zu schaden."

Da sie selbst an Krebs leide, habe ihr ein Umweltmediziner geraten, jeglichen Elektrosmog aus der Wohnung zu verbannen. "Selbst den Radiowecker habe ich abgeschafft." Das alles werde jetzt mit einem Federstrich hinfällig "das ist fahrlässige Körperverletzungen. Susanne Kempkes rechnet mit Kirchenaustritten durch das Vorgehen der Verberger Gemeinde. Bekannte von ihr wohnen neben einer Mobilfunk-Sendeanlage: "Die leiden jetzt unter Schlafstörungen."

Wenig Verständnis für die "hochgespielte Aufregung" in Verberg zeigt Wirt Gerd Siebenmorgen. Ihn ärgern "die Mütter, die morgens und mittags mit dem Handy am Ohr durch die Tempo-30-Zone zu den Kindergärten rasen". Er würde sich wünschen, dass Eltern "ebenso heftig gegen Kindesmissbrauch und Kinderpornografie protestieren". Gegenüber einigen informierten Müttern aus der Nachbarschaft musste Siebenmorgen aber einräumen, sein Dach vor einigen Jahren nicht für eine Mobilfunksendeanlage zur Verfügung gestellt zu haben...

Fighting the battle on all fronts

Just as phone towers grow like Topsy along the skyline, so do the lobby groups to fight them. Report KIM SHAW
Residents from Paddington and the Inner West have teamed up to fight 3G technology, claiming the network is not an essential telecommunications service and interferes with privacy rights.

The health impacts of electromagnetic radiation and the visual blight of phone towers are two additional issues which the group intends to raise with the Federal Government and with parent groups.

The rollout of 3G phone towers has caused consternation in dozens of neighbourhoods, as the towers must be placed closer together than regular mobile-phone towers in order to pass a signal.

A number of groups, such as "Tower Sanity", have cropped up in recent months arguing for a more cautious approach to the rollout of phone-tower facilities. The "Bronte No 3G" group last month lost a protracted battle against the installation of a Hutchison Telecoms 3G antenna in the vicinity of a playground, a primary school and a kindergarten.

The new lobby group with members in Paddington and Ashfield has no name as yet, but is collectively concerned about the privacy implications for 3G phone/camera technology.

Josephine Wadlow-Evans, of Paddington, said 3G technology was a luxury item and not an essential telecommunications service, and should not have the protection of the Federal Telecommunications Act. She said local councils should hold the planning powers over phone towers.

Under the Federal Telecommunications Act, phone towers less than three metres high are deemed low impact and can be erected with out the permission of the local council.

Mary Hawkins, a Greens councillor at Ashfield and a member of the new group, said she had yet to hear of 3G technology being used for social benefit. "You can see the benefit of mobile phones in calling for emergency services, but we don't think video phones provide essential social benefits," Ms Hawkins said. The group will seek to address Parents and Citizens groups from local schools and lobby the Federal Telecommunications Minister, Senator Helen Coonan.

A spokeswoman for Hutchison Telecoms said Australia followed safety standards set by the World Health Organisation in relation to electromagnetic radiation. She said 3G signals were one of the weakest radio signals in the environment compared with radio and TV broadcasts. Last month Hutchison and Telstra announced they would share Hutchison's 3G network infrastructure. The spokeswoman said this would minimise the impact the facilities had on local communities.

Just yesterday I received news that a TETRA had been refused retroactive planning permission in Hove.

Congratulations are due to two Brighton women for single (well double!) handedly being responsible for planning consent being refused for the TETRA mast at Court Farm, Upper Dyke Road, Hove, thereby saving hundreds, possibly thousands of people from serious adverse health effects and possibly worse. They simply sent two letters of objection.

What has really surprised me is that just two people have been able to get a mast refused planning permission. One of the women told me that the case didn`t have to go to committee as there were no letters of support, only their letters of objection, and under Delegated Powers officers can refuse an application on this. Does this mean ANY mast can be refused if either (1) objections outnumber support letters or (2) there is only ONE objection and no support? If so, why is this not mentioned in MS? Am I missing something?

The other is that not one other person wrote either to object to or even support the mast. This is quite disturbing - especially in view of the countless anti TETRA letters written by me and published in the local media over the past year.

However, if this method of mast rejection is effective, it's amaxing news...the message would be: keep an eye on local planning applications and if you see a mast in the pipeline, write a letter of objection and get a friend to do the same. Then PUBLICISE.

Id Card Protesters 'Torch' Blunkett

A giant “ID” card bearing the Home Secretary’s face was set alight today by protesters opposed to the Government’s compulsory identity card plans.

Campaign group NO2ID burned the mock-up outside a central London venue where David Blunkett was due to outline further details of his multi-billion pound ID scheme.

The group of about 20 protesters was also due to burn another card featuring Prime Minister Tony Blair.

NO2ID organiser Mark Littlewood said: “It’s extremely important that the Home Secretary understands that if he proceeds with this absurd plan there’s going to be very substantial public resistance.

“It’s not hysterical to be talking about an Orwellian society and a total surveillance state.

“We are all extremely concerned that the Government is establishing an enormous database on all 60 million of us which will link together a vast amount of information on us.

“I don’t mind the police knowing about my crime sheet and my doctor knowing about my health records, but I certainly don’t want the police knowing my medical records and my doctor knowing my crime records.”

As Mr Blunkett arrived at the conference on ID cards, the protesters shouted “resign. And show us your ID”.

Mr Blunkett turned and gave an exaggerated wave to the small group as he entered the building.

His proposals will cost between £1.3 billion and £3.1 billion to introduce.

The cards which feature biometric details such as fingerprints and iris scans will be phased in from 2007-8 as people applied to renew their passports.

Infarkte jüngerer Patienten stellten beinahe schon ein «Alltagsproblem» dar, das aber seltsamerweise in der Öffentlichkeit kaum wahrgenommen werde. Besonders bei jungen Frauen habe die Zahl der Herzinfarkte «drastisch» zugenommen. Die Häufung von Schlaganfällen, Infarkten und Herzkranzgefäß-Krankheiten gerade bei jüngeren Menschen ist für Dr. med. Scheiner ebenfalls eine mögliche Ursache des Mobilfunks: Die roten Blutkörperchen sind normalerweise alle negativ geladen und stoßen sich gegenseitig ab. Nicht nur Handys strahlen Mikrowellen aus, sondern auch die schnurlosen DECT-Heimtelefone. Im Gegensatz zu einem Mobiltelefon pulst die (häufig neben dem Bett stehende) Basis-Station solcher 'Schnurlosen' Tag und Nacht Mikrowellen ab ­ unabhängig davon, ob man telefoniert oder nicht. Obwohl die Leistung geringer ist als von einem Handy, liegt sie noch immer weit über jenen Werten, wo bereits Schäden an Zellen nachgewiesen wurden.

REGION (red) Die Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Beratungslehrer für Suchtprävention begrüßt das geplante generelle Rauchverbot an Schulen. Allerdings müsse die ganze Palette der Präventionsmöglichkeiten ausgeschöpft werden, um dem zunehmenden Zigarettenkonsum bei immer jüngeren Schülerinnen und Schüler entgegenzuwirken.

Einige Schulen hätten den Weg zur "rauchfreien Schule" bereits mit Erfolg beschritten, erklärt die seit zwanzig Jahren bestehende Arbeitsgemeinschaft, die sich der Suchtprävention widmet. Die Erfahrungen zeigten, dass ein Rauchverbot nicht ausreicht, weil die Probleme damit zunächst nur vor die Schultore verlagert würden.

Nach der Erfahrung der Beratungslehrer wirken soziale und gesellschaftliche Probleme immer stärker in die Schulen. Essstörungen, Computer- und Handy-Sucht, neue und alte Drogen belasteten den schulischen Alltag zunehmend. Qualität und Effektivität der Prävention bedürften, wie die Arbeitsgemeinschaft meint, zusätzlicher finanzieller und personeller Ressourcen, größerer Spezialisierung und interdisziplinärer Zusammenarbeit.

Wie in den vergangenen Jahren trafen sich die Beratungslehrerinnen und Beratungslehrer unter Leitung von Hartmut Bohrer von der Fachberatung Suchtprävention beim Staatlichen Schulamt für den Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis und die Landeshauptstadt Wiesbaden zu einem dreitägigen Seminar - dieses Mal in Rüdesheim. Die Beratungslehrer sind an unterschiedlichen Schulen tätig: Grundschulen, gymnasialen Oberstufen, an Sonderschulen, beruflichen Schulen und Einrichtungen der Erwachsenenbildung. Sie beraten Schulleitungen, Kollegien und andere Gremien, sie informieren über den aktuellen Stand der Suchtproblematik, über Konzepte zur schulischen Suchtprävention, sie beraten bei der Auswahl von Lehr- und Lernmaterialien und sie beraten Lehrkräfte, Eltern und Schüler auch in Einzelgesprächen.

spanische Studien haben gezeigt, dass in Städten mit hoher Mobilfunksenderstrahlung die Spatzen verschwunden sind.

Das trifft auch für kleinere Orte zu. Ich habe mich seit Jahrzehnten am lustigen Treiben vieler Spatzen erfreut. Nachdem auf dem benachbarten Grundstück eines Naturland-Bauern ein TeMobil-Sender errichtet wurde, waren die Spatzen und beinahe alle anderen Vögel innerhalb kurzer Zeit verschwunden!! Es gab sonst keine Ursache für das Verschwinden der Vögel.

Schon ein Spatzenhirn reicht aus, um die Gefährlichkeit der gepulsten Mobilfunksenderstrahlung zu erkennen! Gelingt das den angeblichen Experten, die immer wieder die Ungefährlichkeit der Strahlung für Mensch und Tier betonen, nur wegen ihrer finanziellen Vorteile nicht??

Ihr Leidensweg hat vor einigen Jahren begonnen: wenn sie an ihrem Arbeitsplatz länger mit dem Mobiltelefon telefonierte, bekam sie ein Stechen und ein Gefühl der Hitze im Kopf. „Ich spüre auch ein Vibrieren, wenn jemand in meiner Nähe ein Handy eingeschaltet hat,“ sagt die 45-jährige Psychotherapeutin. Sie hat es auch gespürt, dass der Sender Ende vergangener Woche ausgefallen ist.

Die gebürtige Laabnerin lebte früher mit ihrer Familie in Wien. Als in unmittelbarer Nähe ihres Hauses ein Sender aufgestellt wurde, bekam sie Schlaf- und Herzrhythmusstörungen. Auch ein Vibrationsgefühl und ein Brummton sind mehr oder weniger ständiger Begleiter von Silvana Neuhold.

Daran hat auch die Übersiedlung von der Stadt aufs Land wenig geändert: Auch in Laaben, wo Silvana Neuhold mit ihrem Mann und ihrem 12-jährigen Sohn jetzt lebt, leidet sie unter dem Elektrosmog.

„Ein Radiästhet hat ausgependelt, dass unser Haus genau im Spannungsfeld zwischen dem Sender auf der Klammhöhe und dem Sender in Laaben ist. Mein Problem ist: wo kann ich überhaupt hinziehen? Man kann sich vor Elektrosmog nicht schützen.“

Das ärgste Erlebnis hatte Neuhold während eines Urlaubs auf Koh Samui (Thailand): „Ich bin nach zwei Stunden Schlaf wach geworden und dachte ich stehe unter Strom. Ich war verzweifelt.“ Wie sich herausstellte, stand die Bungalow-Anlage in unmittelbarer Nähe einer Starkstromanlage und eines Senders.

Neuhold bedauert, dass für Menschen, die elektrosmog-sensibel sind, nichts getan wird: „Kein Mensch interessiert sich dafür.“ Neuhold will jetzt dieses Problem mehr in die Öffentlichkeit bringen.

Sie möchte auch das Gesundheitsministerium und die Weltgesundheitsorganisation einschalten: „Es zählt nur der Wirtschaftsfaktor, auf die Volksgesundheit wird zuwenig geachtet. Ich glaube, dass man mehr Aufklärungsarbeit betreiben muss und bewusster mit dem Thema umgehen sollte, vor allem auch was Kinder betrifft.“

Wir brauchen eine Debatte über Solidarität nicht über Leitkultur

Zur Debatte über die so genannte deutsche Leitkultur und die Integration von Zuwandernden in diese Leitkultur erklärt die innenpolitische Sprecherin des Parteivorstandes, Katina Schubert:

Die neu aufgeflammte Debatte der Unionsparteien um eine vermeintliche deutsche Leitkultur ist die falsche Antwort auf die gesellschaftliche Herausforderung, das Zusammenleben von Menschen unterschiedlicher Herkunft und Weltanschauungen zu organisieren. Zwang zur Anpassung ist das Gegenteil von Integration. Integration ist ein zweiseitiger Prozess, der von Einwandernden genauso viel Offenheit und Bereitschaft verlangt wie von den Aufnehmenden. Grundlage von Zusammenleben und Integration ist das Grundgesetz und die darin festgeschriebenen Grund- und Freiheitsrechte. Wir brauchen eine Debatte über die Gestaltung und Organisation dieser faktisch längst multikulturellen Gesellschaften und die wachsende Ausgrenzung von immer mehr Menschen deutscher und nichtdeutscher Herkunft von gesellschaftlicher Teilhabe unter anderem durch die rot-grüne Abbruchpolitik der Agenda 2010. Leitmotiv dieser Debatte muss die Solidarität in der Gesellschaft sein.

The media report that corporate lobbyists plan to spend millions to push the Bush privatization plan. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that Bush's plan would mean a benefit cut of 23% for today's 34-year old worker when he or she retires. A 24-year old worker today would see cuts of 30%, and a child born today (2004) would at retirement have a Social Security benefit 45% smaller than the law now provides. In short - America's young people will pay the price for this Bush payback to Wall Street.

Offener Brief zur Kriegsführung im Irak

Sehr geehrter Herr Botschafter,

mit großer Sorge und Betroffenheit verfolgen wir die Nachrichten aus dem Irak, zuletzt insbesondere von der "Offensive", die US-geführte Truppen in der Stadt Falludscha durchführen. Uns erreichte auch ein Hilfsappell von Bürgern dieser Stadt, mit dem sie den UN-Generalsekretär und die Weltöffentlichkeit um Unterstützung in ihrer schrecklichen Lage baten.

Wir haben den Eindruck gewonnen, dass die Kriegsführung der von den USA angeführten Besatzungstruppen in Falludscha wie im ganzen Land in erster Linie die unbewaffnete Zivilbevölkerung trifft. Sicher ist Ihnen die in der renommierten britischen Mediziner-Zeitschrift "Lancet" publizierte Untersuchung bekannt, nach der seit der Invasion im März 2003 mindestens 100.000 Menschen dem Krieg zum Opfer gefallen sind, die überwiegende Mehrheit davon durch Luft-Bombardements der Koalitionstruppen, und wiederum die weit überwiegende Mehrheit davon Zivilisten, v.a. Frauen und Kinder.

Mit Sicherheit ist Ihnen auch bekannt, dass die Genfer Konvention klare Schutzbestimmungen für die Zivilbevölkerung in Kriegszeiten vorsieht. Es erscheint offensichtlich, dass Ihre Regierung diese Konvention bei ihrem Vorgehen im Irak nicht respektiert, obwohl die USA zu den Unterzeichnerstaaten gehören. Es ist in diesem Zusammenhang für uns ein weiterer Grund zur Beunruhigung und Empörung, dass der designierte Justizminister, Herr Alberto Gonzales, Präsident Bush mit dem juristischen Rat versah, diese Konvention als obsolet zu betrachten!

Unsere Befürchtung ist, dass über das aktuelle, schreckliche Leid der betroffenen Bevölkerung und auch der verletzten und getöteten US-Soldaten hinaus durch das Vorgehen der USA und ihrer Verbündeten nicht etwa die Demokratie gefördert, sondern im Gegenteil dem internationalen Rechtssystem ein schwerer und dauerhafter Schaden zugefügt wird, und damit zivilisatorische Errungenschaften einen schweren Rückschlag erleiden.

Illegale Gefangenschaft und Folter, die von Ihrer Regierung zu verantworten sind, werden ein übriges dazu beitragen, Hass zwischen der arabisch-islamischen Welt und dem Westen zu vertiefen, und damit terroristischen Gruppen weiteren Boden zu bereiten.

Aus unserer Sicht hat die US-Regierung mit dem Irakkrieg die UN-Charta und damit geltendes Völkerrecht gravierend verletzt, wie dies ja auch der UN-Generalsekretär konstatiert hat. Wir appellieren an Ihre Regierung, eine rasche Umkehr ihres verhängnisvollen Kurses in die Wege zu leiten. Als Menetekel sollte die Erinnerung an den grausamen Krieg in Vietnam dazu mahnen, nicht ein weiteres Mal die Arroganz der Macht walten zu lassen, und damit nicht zuletzt das Ansehen der Vereinigten Staaten in der Welt schwer zu beschädigen. Größe liegt nicht in der maximalen Entfaltung militärischer Potenz, sondern in der Fähigkeit, Fehler zu erkennen und rechtzeitig zu korrigieren.

Deshalb bitten wir Sie, unseren Appell an die zuständigen Stellen Ihrer Regierung weiterzuleiten:

- Beenden Sie unverzüglich die Militäroperationen in den irakischen Städten, ziehen Sie Ihre Truppen aus den Bevölkerungszentren zurück, und überlassen sie die öffentliche Sicherheit dort solchen irakischen Polizeikräften, die von der örtlichen Bevölkerung akzeptiert werden!

- Erklären Sie einen festen Abzugstermin für die Okkupationstruppen, mit Abschluss spätestens in einem Jahr!

- Tragen Sie dafür Sorge, dass ein Wahlprozess ohne Beeinflussung durch ausländische Interessen im Irak stattfinden kann, bei dem alle relevanten politischen Kräfte eine faire Chance erhalten, in die nationale Vertretung gewählt zu werden, eine Versammlung, die volle Souveränität für Verfassung und Gesetzgebung des Landes erhalten muß!

- Respektieren sie das völkerrechtliche Verbot für Besatzungsmächte, die Ökonomie des besetzten Landes nach eigenen Vorstellungen zu gestalten, oder gar zu eigenem Nutzen auszubeuten!

Sehr geehrter Herr Botschafter, sicher wissen Sie, dass die deutsche und europäische Öffentlichkeit durch den von Ihrer Regierung unter Angabe nicht zutreffender Gründe geführten Irak-Krieg tief beunruhigt ist, und inzwischen eine Mehrheit der Europäer die US-Politik als eine Gefahr für den Weltfrieden einstuft. Gleichzeitig gibt es vielfältige und bewährte Verbindungen, wichtige Gemeinsamkeiten und viel Sympathie und Bewunderung für die US-amerikanische Nation in unserem Land.

Wir wünschen uns für die Zukunft, dass wir nicht als Kriegs-Alliierte, sondern als Verbündete für friedliche Entwicklung gemeinsame Beiträge für die Weltgemeinschaft leisten können.

MOBILE phone users were last night advised to cut their use of handsets - particularly in areas with poor reception - after new research found evidence they can cause cell damage. The new study, to be published next month, adds to the already heated debate over mobile phone safety. It found that the risk was increased in areas with a poor signal because the mobile phone used higher-powered radiation to maintain contact with the network. The team, based in Germany, is now seeking funds to see if their findings are repeated on living cells within the human body.

Last night, some experts and the mobile industry itself urged consumers not to panic, pointing out that previous studies had failed to prove mobile phones caused illnesses.

The four-year study was conducted by the Verum Foundation, based in Munich, and funded by the EU at a cost of £2.2m.

Mandy's children are having nosebleeds. Andy sleeps with metal plates by his bed. Beat bobbies are reporting strange illnesses. They all blame the new police radio system...

In Bognor Regis 44-year-old Mandy Keeling began to vomit last New Year's Eve. "It was the day, I later learnt, that the Tetra mast 150 yards from my home began transmitting. I had two months of nausea, headaches and poor sleep. Doctors could do nothing. Then I heard about the mast. I was cynical about it at first. I thought, 'Pull yourself together.' I've lived here for 12 years, and there are other mobile masts, but none had made my brain vibrate." By now her two sons, aged nine and 19, were suffering, too; the younger one had nosebleeds.

She went knocking on doors and discovered neighbours had been affected as well. They campaigned to have the mast taken down; eventually, the company agreed. The mast was dismantled in May. Keeling was transformed: "I felt better within a month, and we're all perfectly healthy now. Except when I go near a Tetra mast somewhere else."

We’re continuing on with the recount of the vote in New Hampshire.

In a letter we received on Friday, the Secretary of State of New Hampshire has required us to provide $12,000 by this Wednesday to continue the next phase of the recount effort. We plan to send the requested funds in the next day. The next phase of our recount in New Hampshire will begin on November 29 and should take two days to complete. We will report the outcome to you early next week.

Like many Americans we have questions about the vote for president in 2004. There are more irregularities reported every day. We have been closely following these reports, especially in Ohio and Florida. Indeed, in Ohio Ralph Nader and the Nader-Camejo campaign were the first to speak out about concerns with the administration of the election and how the vote was counted. We urged the Kerry-Edwards campaign to make good on their promise to count every vote. We contacted the Libertarian Party and urged them to demand a recount. We’re pleased to see the Ohio recount moving forward and plan to send staff to the state during the process, as our own ballot access fight continues in the courts there. We know from the number of improperly disqualified signatures on our ballot petitions that Ohio had multiple problems with its voter registration data as 88 different counties were responsible for maintaining lists. Some of the problems in this election began with the manipulation of registration lists – whether it was “cleaning them up” or handling new registrations. Then, of course, supporters of Nader-Camejo were affected by the efforts to keep us off the ballot. That process uncovered the very politically partisan nature of the administration of elections that continues to raise questions about which and how the votes are counted.

Problems also continue with reports of efforts to suppress turnout of voters through intimidation and harassment or through the failure to have enough voting machines in certain precincts thereby creating unbearably long waits to vote. Then there is the range of problems with vote counting – paperless electronic voting machines and optical scans of paper ballots by computers raise questions about whether the software’s choice of candidates or the voters’ choice is being counted. Finally, there is the problem with auditing the vote count, seeking recounts and challenging election results.

Nader-Camejo believes every vote should be counted correctly. Unlike the Democratic Party’s abdication here, those are not just words for us – they require action to ensure every vote – be it write-in, provisional, absentee, paper or electronic -- is counted regardless of whether it affects outcomes at the national, state and local levels. Therefore, we are looking at reports of irregularities in the vote count not just in New Hampshire but in other states to determine what steps, if any, are possible or required to protect the vote.

Bill Blum, one of the great American historians of the post WWII period, surely one of the boldest and most interesting, has his work cut out for him. From 1946 until now, this moment, and in the foreseeable future, the U.S. Empire's record of invasions, interventions and general malicious meddling in the governments, societies and "freedoms" of foreign peoples is virtually unparalleled in the history of meddlesome Empires. Never have so many been made so miserable so often by so few. And it's all on the public record, or enough of it to fill tomes denser by orders of magnitude than the two previous volumes, Killing Hope and Rogue State, both sizeable books Bill Blum has already written (he also penned a fascinating autobiography, West Bloc Dissident, regarding the pursuit of intellectual liberty in the totalitarian mindscape of the "free world")....But what about Bill Blum, author of the essays collected in Freeing the World to Death? Well, he's an historian, he's supposed to know stuff. Does that excuse us from not knowing? Or allow us to deliberately tell ourselves childish lies, such as we're “liberating” the people of Iraq by slaughtering 100,000 of them, not to mention the 100,000 we slaughtered in Persian Gulf I and the several hundred thousand, perhaps a million, we killed after that, literally starved, with sanctions....

Here's an interesting development nearly three weeks after the election: Ohio's Democratic chairman, Dennis White sent out a press release stating, "As Senator Kerry stated in his concession speech in Boston, we do not necessarily expect the results of the election to change, however, we believe it necessary to make sure everyone's vote is counted fairly and accurately." White called for witnesses, volunteers, and donations.
