March 31 National call to action.

No Draft, No Way!

On March 31, the Selective Service System (SSS) will report to President Bush that it is ready to implement the draft within 75 days. Right now, the SSS is staffing local draft boards, training volunteer registrars to work on high school and college campuses, and streamlining its induction process. They have also gained access to the Department of Education's computer files, to ensure maximum registration.

It is clear that the Bush Administration is preparing for a draft. They are desperate for new soldiers to continue the occupation of Iraq and to prepare for new wars against Iran, Syria, and elsewhere.

At the same time that Bush is looking to youth to supply cannon fodder for his wars, he is busy cutting financial aid and slashing social programs. The same young people that Bush wants to use to fight his wars are finding it harder to pay for their education, find jobs that pay a living wage, or obtain basic necessities, like health care or affordable housing.

It is time for young people, who are already under attack from the Bush Administration, to take a stand.

On March 31, the same day that the Selective Service System is reporting that the draft is ready to go, youth all over the country will report that they will refuse to go.

Local No Draft, No Way organizers and other anti-draft activists are planning protests, walkouts, and direct action at recruiting centers, selective service offices, and other sites. We call upon students, youth, and antiwar activists to organize local actions on March 31 to say "No Draft, No Way!"

Arctic Vote Showdown Expected Next Week!

This week, the House and Senate budget committees split over whether or not to include proposals to allow drilling in America's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to be included in the federal budget. The Senate is poised to vote next week on whether or not to allow the drilling provision to stay in the budget.

On the House side, the House budget resolution has no Arctic provision in it. In fact, the House budget committee explicitly stated that they did not want the budget process from being used to open the Artic Refuge to drilling. "We have tried to keep the budget free of policy. Things like [drilling in the Arctic Refuge] immediately create a lightning rod," said Sean Spicer, spokesman for the committee chairman, Rep. Jim Nussle (R-IA).

Even though the entire Budget Committee is now on record saying that they oppose using the budget to advance Arctic drilling, the budget resolution is a non-binding document and is only a recommended blueprint. Other committees with jurisdiction over specific parts of the budget may ignore the wishes of the budget committee and decide to include a drilling proposal anyway.

In the Senate, the Senate Budget Committee Chairman Judd Gregg (R-NH) decided to include the controversial drilling provision in the Senate version. Despite opposition from several Senators in his own party, Senator Gregg said he thought it was "reasonable" to assume that the drilling provision would remain in the budget.

During the budget committee meeting, Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) offered an amendment to strip the Arctic drilling provision out of the budget resolution. The amendment failed on a straight party-line 10-12 vote.

Next week, the Senate is scheduled to have a floor debate on the budget resolution. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) will go to the Senate floor with an amendment to remove the provision that allows drilling in America's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Demand an Honest Ethics Process to Probe DeLay's Scandals

Just as new scandals concerning alleged ethical violations by House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) and other Members have erupted in recent days, the House Ethics Committee has become virtually powerless.

The reason? Rules passed at the beginning of 2005 make it virtually impossible for the Committee to launch any investigation of unethical conduct. We are writing to ask for your help to resolve the gridlock in the Ethics Committee:

Rep. Alan Mollohan (D-WV), the senior Democrat on the Ethics Committee, is leading the charge to reject the new rules and is calling on his House colleagues, Democrats and Republicans, to join him in cosponsoring a resolution that would roll back the most onerous rule changes.

We believe it is absolutely critical that members of both parties join Rep. Mollohan in overturning the controversial ethics rules in order to ensure an honest and effective ethics process. This is why we need you to urge your Member of Congress, and the House leadership, to co-sponsor the Mollohan resolution (H.Res. 131).

Now is the time we need an effective ethics process, which will ensure proper investigation into all of the latest alleged transgressions by DeLay and other members of Congress. Rep. Mollohan's resolution would reverse the "party protection act," the worst of the new ethics rules that would effectively dismiss a complaint in the event of a deadlock within the ethics committee, which is equally divided between Democrats and Republicans.

Mollohan's resolution would also do away with a "45 day rule" which allows an investigation to drop if the committee takes no action in that amount of time. Lastly it would reverse the "collusion" rule that allows one lawyer to represent more than one individual involved in an ethics investigation, thereby providing an opportunity for the individuals to corroborate their stories. So, please join us today in support of Rep. Mollohan's resolution asking for an honest ethics process:

Capitol Hill is still buzzing from all your calls and letters last week pushing for investigations of the new DeLay ethics scandals. The Washington Post noted today how the GOP leaders are getting weary of DeLay's ever growing ethics problems. Nancy - one of our members from MA wrote us today:

I called all the Members of the ethics committee today regarding investigating Tom DeLay's recent trip with a paid lobbyist. Rep. Lamar Smith's office noted that, "you people certainly have your base organized. I've been swamped with calls.

Clearly you are having a huge impact. So we cannot let up now. We can't move forward in holding power accountable without a functioning ethics committee. We need to make sure our representatives hear from us and understand that matters pertaining to the ethical standards of the House matter deeply to constituents across the country:

Thank you again for all of your activism and staying with us in this fight.

Stop fake News on local TV

On Sunday, the New York Times reported that at least 20 federal agencies have made and distributed pre-packaged, ready-to-serve television news segments to promote President Bush's policies and initiatives.

Congress' Government Accountability Office determined that these "video news releases" were illegal "covert propaganda" and told federal agencies to stop. But last Friday, the White House ordered all agencies to disregard Congress' directive.

The Bush administration is using hundreds of millions of your tax dollars to manipulate public opinion. Here's how to stop them:

1. Sign our petition and help us get 250,000 people to join our call to Congress, the Federal Communications Commission and local television stations. Tell Congress and the FCC to toughen and enforce laws against "covert propaganda" and demand that broadcasters come clean with viewers about using government-produced news.

2. Join others in your community to create "citizen agreements" with your local TV stations to stop fake news broadcasts. These agreements are official documents filed at the FCC that -- if broken -- can be used to deny license renewals. Free Press will connect you with others in your area working to ensure local broadcasters identify the sources behind the "news."

Unless we speak out now, the White House will continue to act with impunity -- taking advantage of understaffed and incautious local news operations to manipulate public opinion.

Please take a few moments to sign the Free Press petition and forward this message to everyone you know.

ANWR on the Brink - Again

Call your Senator now to save the Arctic Refuge

We need your help right now to save the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The future of this pristine wild land may be decided as early as tomorrow March 15, 2005. Right now the Senate version of the federal budget includes a provision to start drilling in the Arctic Refuge. Today Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) will introduce an amendment to strip the Arctic drilling provision out of the budget.

Please contact your Senator today and urge them to support the Cantwell Amendment and save the Arctic Refuge. Click here to send a free fax to your Senators now! Or if you're a registered user simply hit "reply" and then hit "send" and we'll automatically send the message below on your behalf.

Once you've sent your fax, please take a moment to call your Senators as well. Scroll down to the end of this message to find a list of phone numbers for U.S. Senators and some brief talking points for your call.

Using the budget to open the Arctic Refuge is a sneaky backdoor trick to avoid democratic debate on this critical issue. Senator Cantwell's amendment will prevent such budget trickery.

There is no time to waste; a vote on the Senate floor will take place as early as tomorrow. It's very important that your Senators hear from as many constituents as possible today. Scroll down to the end of this email to find your Senators' phone numbers!

A lot is riding on this decision. This incomparable wilderness is home to more than 250 animal species, including wolves, grizzlies, caribou, and millions of migrating birds. Unless we act now, this world-class wilderness will become a vast oil development field.

Click here now to send a fax to your Senators urging them to support the Cantwell amendment.

Please don't forget to call your Senators, as well! Scroll down to the end of this message to look up your Senators' phone numbers. After you've made your call please send an email to info@saveourenvironment.org to let us know how it went.

Once you've taken action, forward this email message to at least 10 friends urging them to contact their Senators too. It's up to us to prevent drilling and save the Arctic Refuge!

Thank you again for your help,

Katelyn Sabochik
Online Campaign Manager

Dear Senator,

I strongly urge you to support the Cantwell amendment to strike language authorizing drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from the Senate budget bill. As your constituent, I urge you to vote against ANY budget measure that would allow oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The inclusion of any such measure in the budget is an unacceptable sneak attack on our precious wildlife and wild lands.

Drilling in the Arctic Refuge is not a path to energy independence or lower prices at the pump. The United States Geological Survey estimates that the Refuge has less than a single year's supply of oil that would not reach the market for at least 10 years. Meanwhile, the harm to wildlife and to our greatest wildlife refuge would be irreparable. We need to save national treasures like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for future generations.

[your name and address]

Below is a list of U.S. Senators by state and their phone numbers. Please look up the Senators from your state and call them today! When you call, be sure to state your name and address so the receptionist knows that you are a constituent.

Your message: Keep drilling in the Arctic Refuge out of the federal budget by supporting the Cantwell amendment.

House Bill Free of Arctic Refuge Provision: Protect the Arctic Refuge

Your Help Needed Again to Protect the Arctic Refuge

Time and again you have answered our calls to action on behalf of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Your calls and faxes have captured the attention of many in Congress. Words can't possibly express how grateful we at The Wilderness Society are to you.

Please don't let up now. The need to keep the pressure on the Senate this week is critically important.

The Senate is expected to vote on the Budget Resolution this Wednesday, March 16. We need you to keep up the pressure on your Senators, urging them to vote for the Cantwell amendment, which would strip out Arctic Refuge drilling from the Budget Resolution.

Calls are best, but we are urging folks to call, and then use our action page to send a written message.

House Bill Free of Arctic Refuge Provision

This week, the House and Senate Budget Committees marked up the budget. The House budget resolution has no explicit Arctic provision in it. But drilling proponents may still try to exploit opportunities to slip Arctic drilling past the House through the budget process, if House Members are not actively vigilant.

Senate Bill Includes Arctic Refuge Drilling

In the Senate, Senate Budget Committee Chairman Judd Gregg (R-NH) decided to include the controversial drilling provision in the Senate version. Despite opposition from several Senators in his own party, Senator Gregg said he thought it was "reasonable" to assume that the drilling provision would remain in the budget. Our WildAlert members in New Hampshire are working hard to deliver a message to Sen. Gregg that this position is unacceptable.

During the budget committee meeting, Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) offered an amendment to strip the Arctic drilling provision out of the budget resolution. The amendment failed on a straight party-line vote, 10-12. As you can see, our efforts to protect the unequalled Arctic Refuge are far from over.

Please Call Today, Then Ask Your Friends To Do So As Well

We need your calls and emails to the Senate on Tuesday and Wednesday!

Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at 1-800-247-2971 (or 202-224-3121) or use our online contact directory to look up the direct phone number for your Senators:

Your message:
Please vote for the Cantwell amendment to strip Arctic Refuge drilling from the Senate budget resolution.

If you want to say more:
Opening the Arctic Refuge to drilling through the budget process would be fiscally irresponsible, since no one knows the amount or value of oil that is there. Moreover, it would ruin a wilderness and wildlife habitat that is unequalled any where on earth. This is one place where drilling must not take place.

After you call, or if you cannot call, send your Senators an email from:

Thank you again for all you have done to protect this exquisite wildlife refuge from being destroyed.

Keep religion out of public life

Salman Rushdie warns that West will invite tyranny if faith is given a seat in the political arena

Mar. 13, 2005. 01:00 AM Toronto Star

I never thought of myself as a writer about religion until a religion came after me. Religion was a part of my subject, of course — for a novelist from the Indian subcontinent, how could it not have been? But in my opinion I also had many other, larger, tastier fish to fry.

Nevertheless, when the attack came, I had to confront what was confronting me and to decide what I wanted to stand up for in the face of what so vociferously, repressively and violently stood against me.

Now, 16 years later, religion is coming after us all and, even though most of us probably feel, as I once did, that we have other, more important concerns, we are all going to have to confront the challenge. [...] Read more at: http://tinyurl.com/5a74y

Fallujah, Tent City, Awaits Compensation

A town of 300,000 people was wiped off the map, and now only 3,000 to 8,000 of the people can survive in the city and remain overnight. Sadly, the U.S. press forgot about Fallujah. The devastated town may be remembered as the Guernica of the U.S. - Iraq War. For details on the complete destruction of Fallujah, read the article below.

Two thirds of people believe the risks of emissions from mobile phones outweigh the benefits

Interesting to note the report by Roger Highfield (Science Editor) on page 3 of this morning's Daily Telegraph:

"Two thirds of people now believe the risks of emissions from mobile phones outweigh the benefits, according to a Government survey.

This represnts a reversal of the pattern of two years ago when more than twice the proportion believed the benefits exceeded the risks, according to a Mori research report, 'Science in Society', commissioned by the Department of Trade and Industry.

Sir William Stewart, head of the National Radiological Protection Board, Britain's radiation watchdog, recently warned that the dangers - particularly to children - were still unknown. And a Swedish study has linked long-term use with double the risk of a rare tumour on a nerve that connects the ear to the brain.

The survey, of around 2000 people, is published today to coincide with National Science Week."
