The Naila-Study

Summary

Following the call by Wolfram König, President of the Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz (Federal Agency for radiation protection), to all doctors of medicine to collaborate actively in the assessment of the risk posed by cellular radiation, the aim of our study was to examine whether people living close to cellular transmitter antennas were exposed to a heightened risk of taking ill with malignant tumors.

The basis of the data used for the survey were PC fi1es of the case histories of patients between the years 1994 and 2004. While adhering to data protection, the personal data of almost 1.000 patients were evaluated for this study, which was completed without any external financial support. It is intended to continue the project in the form of a register.

The result of the study shows that the proportion of newly developing cancer cases was significantly higher among those patients who had lived during the past ten years at a distance of up to 400 metres from the cellular transmitter site, which bas been in operation since 1993, compared to those patients living further away, and that the patients fell ill on average 8 years earlier.

In the years 1999-2004, i.e. after five years’ operation of the transmitting installation, the relative risk of getting cancer had trebled for the residents of the area in the proximity of the installation compared to the inhabitants of Naila outside the area.

GENEVA - The World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday urged governments to provide funds to drug makers developing vaccines against a feared influenza pandemic, which could kill millions of people.

Representatives of 11 drug companies, governments and vaccine licensing agencies ended a two-day meeting amid fears Asia’s lethal bird flu virus endemic could mutate and infect humans.

Klaus Stohr, head of the WHO’s global influenza program, said companies were reluctant to invest some 11 million euros ($14.15 million) to develop a vaccine that may never be used.

Is the age of "designer babies" looming closer? In Britain, four couples have won approval for embryo screening for cancer genes. Some consider it a controversial case. All the couples are affected by an inherited form of aggressive colon cancer and are getting in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments to get pregnant. The couples appealed to the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority -- which governs embryo screening in Britain -- to allow them to select an embryo without the cancer gene. They have won that right. Now, their child and future generations are unlikely to have the cancer gene. Could this happen in the U.S.? Are we on a slippery slope leading toward designer babies with "basketball star" genes, green eyes, or curly hair?

The federal government plans a new role in delivering mental health care. Historically, however, governments have used psychiatric techniques for harm rather than good. On April 29, 2002, President George W. Bush issued an executive order creating a new commission charged with finding ways to “improve America’s mental health service delivery system.” One year later, the Orwellian-sounding New Freedom Commission on Mental Health released its findings. Its final report recommended mental health screening for all Americans and, in a proposal that should alarm parents everywhere, recommended that the nation’s schools be used to assess the mental health of all schoolchildren. While each new federal plan or program seems more ludicrous than the last, the commission’s desire to screen the mental health of all Americans is not just another big government boondoggle.

The government ordered U.S. airlines Friday to turn over personal
information about passengers so it can test a system for identifying potential terrorists. The move was expected but nonetheless brought protests from civil libertarians worried about invasions of privacy. Under the system, called "Secure Flight," the Transportation Security Administration will compare passenger data with names on two government watch lists: a "no-fly" list comprises known or suspected terrorists, and a "watch" list names people who should face tighter scrutiny before boarding planes. "Secure Flight represents a significant step in securing domestic air travel and safeguarding national security information, namely, the watchlists," the TSA said in a notice announcing the order.

The TSA order gives 72 airlines until Nov. 23 to turn over computerized data for passengers who traveled on domestic flights during June.

It is a nursing home that guarantees residents a good reception, but most have decided they do not want it.

Hillview, a residential care unit for elderly people in Carlow town, is at the centre of a row over a mobile-phone base station to be installed on its premises. The equipment, put in place by Vodafone, includes antennae attached to the roof and a "control room" on the first floor. It has improved coverage for locals of Carlow, but has led to protests from some of the home's residents concerned about possible health repercussions.

"We want this base station to come down and the sooner the better," said Mary White, a Green party councillor who is representing the residents. "A nursing home is not a proper site for it. "Guidelines in Carlow state that it would be better if such infrastructure was not placed near schools, residential areas and community facilities. We think this should also include nursing homes even though they may be commercial premises."

Residents/Relatives Against Masts, a pressure group, has been set up to campaign against the base station, but last week agreed not to talk publicly pending negotiations with the home's owners.

A spokeswoman for Vodafone said the company had informed Carlow's town council that it was going to install the base station, as was required. She said it did not require planning permission and that there were no objections. The spokeswoman added that it had been in operation for a number of weeks and there were no safety concerns or health risks as it was subject to radiation regulations. "We have entered into a five-year contract and money has changed hands. We are talking with the owners, but that is all we are prepared to say at this stage," she said. She added that the people of Carlow had been "demanding better coverage" and that the base station was "one of the busiest in the country". She refused to say how much the contract was worth to the home's owners.

James O'Byrne and Catherine, his wife, who run the £600 a week home, are understood to have told residents that it would be removed and that Vodafone had agreed to this.

South Eastern Health Board said it believed the base station had been deactivated and would be removed.

Phone companies in Ireland have generally refused to remove base stations when concerns have been raised by landlords. In one case, Vodafone has sought a fee to remove one from the land of a farmer in Tipperary who is claiming adverse effects, even though the mast on his land has been shown to adhere to safe radiation levels."
