Protests against the fishing practice of bottom-trawling continue

Tuesday 16 November 2004

Greenpeace has continued its high-profile campaign against the fishing practice of bottom-trawling, with another dramatic incident in the North Atlantic. Protesters from the environmental group’s Esperanza ship boarded the Lithuanian flagged ‘Anuva’ trawler and unfurled banners reading ‘Stop Deep Sea Plunder’, in the second such protest in as many weeks. They also occupied the nets of the boat and prevented a re-casting.

"Whole habitats are being ripped up from depths of 1000 metres just for the sake of a few fish. This deep sea plunder is wiping out unknown worlds, including ancient coral. The destruction is unnecessary and what's worse, irreparable," commented Greenpeace’s Dima Litvinov.

Bottom-trawling boats, in the majority from EU countries, drag fishing gear weighing several tonnes across the sea bed, destroying everything in their path including marine wildlife such as coral and devastating life on underwater mountains - or `seamounts', such as the Darwin Mounds.

Cuffing Bush and the FBI

by Nat Hentoff

Village Voice

11/12/04

Bush's re-election ensures that he and John Ashcroft's designated successor, Alberto Gonzales, will press Congress hard to retain the Patriot Act in its entirety, and enact a Patriot Act II that will further disable the Constitution. There are two primary roadblocks to further assaults on our liberties. Despite continued Republican control of Congress, there is still a firm alliance there between civil-liberties Democrats and conservative Republican libertarians, especially in the Senate. That coalition will continue to oppose Bush's determination to fight the Patriot Act's 'sunset clause,' which permits reconsideration of parts of the act by December 2005...

Common Dreams

11/16/04

I'm not referring to the latest attempt to reconquer Iraq, but rather the wholesale political revenge campaign being waged by the hard-liners in the Bush administration against anybody and everybody inside the government who challenged the way the second Persian Gulf war in a decade was marketed and run. ... by successfully discarding those who won't buy into the administration's ideological fantasies of remaking the world in our image, the neoconservatives have consolidated control of the United States' vast military power. With the ravaging of the CIA and the ousting of Powell -- instead of the more-deserving Rumsfeld -- the coup of the neoconservatives is complete. They have achieved a remarkable political victory by failing upward...

Killing the messenger

by Spencer Ackerman

Salon

11/17/04

Many conservatives in and outside the administration, especially the neoconservatives, view the CIA as a subversive element bent on stymieing Bush's agenda. The last several months of the presidential campaign saw a series of intelligence disclosures concerning Iraq and the war on terrorism that the White House regarded as intended to derail Bush's reelection. Many agency employees believe that administration officials rewarded them for their best efforts at divining the truth about al-Qaida, Iraq, nuclear proliferation and other urgent threats to U.S. national security with derision, political pressure and blame for the mistakes of policymakers.

Now, with the arrival of Goss as DCI, they see the Bush administration intent not so much on reforming the CIA as crushing it. And as is already clear, many intelligence veterans don't plan on going quietly into the night... [subscription or ad view required]

Amerika Über Alles vs. America, Land of the Free

by Anthony Gregory

LewRockwell.Com

"[T]hroughout its early history, America was great to the extent that the government was limited, and kept out of people's affairs. America was tarnished and bloodied to the extent that government grew and gained power. The same is true today, when we have a much larger government than even the least libertarian Founding Fathers would have ever imagined or desired. To the extent that America is now great, it is because of what government doesn't do, not what it does. And today's nationalists are not cheering on America when they cheer on the police-warfare state and lash out at its critics. They are cheering on Amerika -- the nationalized, bureaucratized, militarized version of our country...

Libertarianism, conservatism and all that

Ludwig von Mises Institute

Every person attracted to the thought of Ludwig von Mises is eventually faced with the question: should I be a conservative or a libertarian or must I choose at all? The Mises Institute even added this point on its Frequently Asked Questions. The current political moment demonstrates the importance of the issue. Conservatives generally think their man won the election but libertarians look at the Bush presidency and see war, big government, and violations of rights all around...

America unbound ... or insolvent?

Reason

11/15/04

Republicans this November ran not just against Democrats, but the weaselly Europeans who sympathize with them. The Republican Convention was a four-day f--k-France festival; John Kerry was relentlessly (and falsely) accused of offering furriners a 'veto' over American foreign policy, and the schoolyard taunts that he even looked French made the Massachusetts Senator pathetically defensive.

Anti-multilateral politics, of course, are successful in large part because multilateral institutions and treaties are so flawed. ... But shaking off the shackles comes with a direct cost that the globe-changing Jacksonians rarely acknowledge...

Time for all good men to come to the aid of their country

Libertarians for America

11/15/04

Once upon a time -- and not so many years ago -- lovers of liberty could look at the two major parties and say, as I did a few paragraphs back, that each had their good points. The Republicans might be bad on social policy, but were good on economics; the Democrats might be bad on economics, but at least they understood civil rights. Today, it is impossible to be impartial. The Republicans are more and more vile on social policy, and are insane on economics. The Democrats understand the importance of civil freedom -- and have at least understood that markets have a value. They still aren't the Party of Freedom -- but perhaps they can understand why, in a nation synonymous with freedom, they can be, and should be...

Fluoride has been linked to Bone Cancer in Children

I have to say, as an ex-dental nurse with terrible teeth, I haven't noticed a high level of oral health in Birmingham, far from it. I am aware that there is a lot of controversy over the use of flouride, with some evidence to suggest that it has adverse effects. I think there is a good anology with 'Skells', the tobacco lozenges which were available in the '70's and targeted at children. There were incidences of mouth cancer in children caused by sucking these carcinogenic lozenges, and I remember Esther Ransom tackling the issue and bringing the production of these things to an almost immediate standstill!

Oh Esther, were are you now? (Probably on the end of a Mobile Phone).

Amanda

When fluoride was first introduced into toothpaste etc there was a dentist who went on TV and spoke out against it. I believe fluoride has been linked to bone cancer in children, I remember listening to a programme on the wireless about it and I believe a homopathic hosopital spoke up against it. I think the fluoride that is added to toothpaste , water etc is a by procuct of the chemical industry and not at all the same as naturally occurring fluoride. It seems to me its just a way of the chemical industry getting rid of its waste and making money out of it and I am totally against it.

regards sue g i

40,000 research papers show a list of adverse health effects so long they fill 2 sides of A4. The shit added to the water of 5 1/2 million Britons is hexafluorisilicic acid, a toxic waste product of the phosphate fertiliser industry. This is 25 times miore toxic thean naturally occurring calcium fluoride which being present in the water of millions of people in India is responsible for 6 million kids being able to walk to school as they have deformed bones.

After Birmingham was fluoridated in the mid 60s rates of tooth, digestive and immune condition problems skyrocketed. 48% of people in Birmingham now have dental fluorosis recognised as the first visible sign of chronic fluoride poisoning by scientists worldwide (gagged by the world media). Dentists flocked to Birmingham soon after the intro of fluoride as there was so much business for them.

Illegal, unethical and extremely dangerous...all our water is now at risk.

Gary

Dear Gary,

I read abook by John Polya years ago, in which he told how the discovery of fluoride when people in anarea whera their water was polluted by it had markedly discoloured, though very hard, teeth. After discovery fluoride was added to water in several cities, but in most ( MIchigan I think was one place) was discontinued after problems including increased cases of cancer were found. The problem is that when boiled, the amount of fluoride in water increases as the liquid evaporates, so those who drink a lot of beverages are likely to get fluoride poisoning too.

Our government began to introduce fluoride just as American cities were discarding it! Yours Gill Lyden
