Radiation News Stories

** It is unclear whether the new school year will open in Einstein school in Haifa, because the school is irradiated by an army A.M antenna and parents oppose their children will study there. One of the pupils is the grandchild of our Environment Minister. This antenna has been there for many years and in the 90's it was blamed for the high cancer rate in Einstein street, the citizens fought and as a result, the antenna was closed. Now, in summer 2004, the A.M station multiplied to a cellular antennas farm, with 4 huge towers very close to houses and to the school. Still, the A.M station is again at the center of events. After the residents in the area have heard the army radio station "Galey Zahal" through the electronic equipment in their houses - through turned off computer's loudspeakers, through the T.V., telephones, entercom, the cars remote controls don't work - the Cities Union hired Ehud Neaman to measure the radiation there, and it was found that in one of the houses it was 400% more than the 20 uw/cm2 which is the israeli Environment Ministry non-obligatoy standard, and near the school 2.8 fold more than this standard. The mayor demands to close immediately the station but the army says that it rejects the radiation claims, the army spokeperson says that a year ago, the Env. Ministry measured the radiation there and it was ok.

Actually, the Env. Ministry measured the radiation but didn't find anything [well that's what they say], and that's the reason the Cities Union hired Ehud Neaman who found the high radiation. Now, after the results were published on local & national T.V and in the newspaper, the Ministry claims that it found similar results as Ehud Neaman found. Within a week the school year is supposed to open and what will happen with the pupils is unclear, the parents say they are not sleeping well now and don't agree to send their children to Einstein school.

** Also in Israel- a new governmental team will investigate the radiation from the antennas. As a results from the citizens complains, a committe of the ministers of science and technology will investigate the radiation.

This news item says that although there is accumulation of knowledge that is funded by the cellular companies, we don't have a national body that gathers all the information and produces reliable guidelines.

The science minister Ilan Shalgy says that this subject is a hot potato that everyone throws from hand to hand. He says that the knowledge is gathered in different hands but nobody coordionates them and no upper body took the responsibility to give answers. He says the subject is not advanced although it has been treated by different governmental committees for about 10 years. The team is expected to recommend within 3 months on the way to establish a national knowldge center for research on electromagnetic radiation and its effects on public health.

** The investement bank Meryl Linch made an international comparison and found again that Israel is the second in the world in the quantity of the cellular phone calls. In the first quarter of this year Israel was first in the world, with penetration of 102% procents. In Israel there are more phones than citizens.

This "achievement" is attributed to the low prices that were at the beginning of the technology in Israel, because the communication ministry and Cellcom company wanted the technology to penetrate "the deepest it could".

Also another reason is that Israelies accept very easily new technologies, they tend to adopt new technologies quicker than anywhere else in the world. [that is why it will be so hard to try to make a change in Israel]

** Yesterday it was reported that a teenager felt suddenly headaches in a party, a sensitivity to light was diagnosed but the doctors didn't unserstand what's wrong with him because all his checks were normal. He had migranes, and he is unconscious now. The doctors "solved" the problem by claiming it is a virus.

Bases say emissions from Akrotiri antennae safe

The update from Cyprus, forwarded by the Cyprus Greens, underscores another kind of talent: soothing public health fears with false reassurances.

"Bases say emissions from Akrotiri antennae safe

by Alex Mita

(archive article - Wednesday, August 4, 2004)

THE BRITISH Bases said yesterday that both antennae at Akrotiri have been operating simultaneously and insisted that electromagnetic radiation emissions were well within safety levels.

Their comments came after Greens deputy George Perdikis blasted the British government during a visit to Akrotiri yesterday morning, for what he said was going back on a deal with the government that the two antennae would not be working at the same time.

Perdikis also accused the British of carrying out works to extend a power station which supplies both antennae with electricity.

A Greens said that according to their sources, an electromagnetic radiation monitoring device had been sent abroad for maintenance and would not be sent back until the autumn.

But in a statement yesterday, the Sovereign Base Area (SBA) said the British government had fulfilled commitments made in its Joint Statement with the Republic on August 28, 2001 on health! and environmental impact, adding that that was their primary concern due to the fact that British soldiers also worked near the antennas.

"The SBA are acutely aware of the public concern about the safety of the new antenna," the statement read.

"However, changing operational requirements since September 11 and technical developments over the last couple of years mean that the Pluto system will now operate as a whole, with the two main antennae being used simultaneously.

"The Republic of Cyprus government were notified of this development last year, and the matter has been reported widely in the Cypriot media since then. This is not a new issue," the SBA added.

According to the statement, the two antennae are complementary and will function as a single system across the high frequency band and the system will continue to transmit the same maximum power and have the same maximum gain as the previous system.

"Emission levels from the new antenna will be lower than those for the more extensive system of masts and aerials it replaced and will continue to be well within the safety limits set by the EU," the statement read.

The SBA said some components of the emissions monitor set up in Akrotiri have had to be removed for recalibration.

"This process needs to be carried out every two years to maintain the integrity of the system and the reliability of the data," the SBA said.

"The work will be carried out by the manufacturer in Italy and will take up to six weeks to complete.

"The decision to remove the equipment was taken in full consultation with the Cyprus government and with the agreement of the Akrotiri residents."

The SBA said that as a further measure of reassurance to the local community, the British and Cypriot governments had also commissioned a major epidemiological study into the potential impact of the antennae on the health of Akrotiri residents.

The study is being conducted by internationally renowned experts from Bristol University and is expected to report in about 18 months time.

"We believe that this to will demonstrate conclusively that the local community has nothing to fear from the antennae," the statement read.

Vodafone denies it 'hid' phone mast in Navan industrial estate

The update from Co. Meath, Ireland underscores once again Vodafone's talent for storing new--and dodgy--wine (masts) in old bottles (e.g. chimneys).

THE IRISH TIMES, FRIDAY, AUGUST 13, 2004
Regional News Section.

"Vodafone denies it 'hid' phone mast in Navan industrial estate

Elaine Keogh

Mobile phone operator Vodafone yesterday denied claims that it hid a mobile phone mast in a makeshift chimney on an industrial estate in Navan. The company said yesterday it will challenge Meath County Council which says the mast does not have planning permission and is illegal.

The council has confirmed it has started enforcement proceedings against the company in relation to the mast that was erected on land owned by mushroom company, Sylvan Ireland, on the Beechmount Industrial estate.

Warning letters have been sent to both the company and Vodafone by the council, giving them four weeks to respond. If the council is not happy with their responses it says it will begin enforcement proceedings, which may include removing the mast.

Protest group Mast Action in Meath (MAIM) has welcomed the council's action and says it will hold a march today.

"We believe this mast, which looks like a 15-metre high aluminium chimney flue, has been here for around three and a half years and none of the workers in the mushroom company or the other surrounding businesses or housing estates knew about it," said Dr Don MacAuley of MAIM.

The group will gather today at lunchtime outside the Townspark housing estate close to the industrial estate, and will distribute leaflets warning of the alleged health risks linked to radiation from such masts.

A meeting of residents who live in three local housing estates heard complaints about headaches. Dr MacAuley says people are concerned about more serious issues, such as leukaemia.

However, Vodafone said yesterday it is fully compliant with the national and international guidelines which govern emissions from masts. "Indeed the emissions from this mast have been tested by a third party and have proved to be thousands of times below the threshold safety levels," a spokeswoman said.

She said the company believes it is fully compliant with the planning regulations in this instance and will be responding to Meath County Council with its position.

"The site in question was acquired in January 2001, and at that time the Planning and Development Act 1963 was in force. Under that Act this type of development is exempt."

She also denied that part of the mast had been concealed inside the chimney so as not to be visible to the public. "The site is not "hidden" - it has been designed to be as unobtrusive as possible as required by the Department of the Environment guidelines."

There was no one available from Sylvan Ireland to comment on the matter yesterday.

Optic fibres through Haifa Sewers

Haifa municipality has laid down this week, with a robot, an optic fibres communication system, in the sewers system in Vadi Roshmia. In the municipality they emphasize that it is the first time this kind of thing is done in Israel, and that at the end of the project, it will include all the central sewers and the water pipes in Haifa.

The new system will supply advanced communication, with no lines and information limits. In the first stage, the system will supply the municipality information about the water supply in the city, afterwards this tool will be useful for the cable companies, Bezeq, the power company and other private and governmental sectors.

Using the existing sewage system to supply infrastructures will reduce the need for cellular antennas and the roads/ highways digging while laying communication infrastructure systems.

The new communication system was developed by a Vienna municipality daughter company.

The projects manager of the company in Vienna, Horst Zeidel, said that the new system works successfully in the sewage system in his city and in other cities in the world, and it improved the local quality of life. Zeidel: "We are happy to operate in Haifa the first project of its kind in Israel, and to contribute to the technology development of laying a digital communication infrastructure, without digging the city and without causing suffering to its residents."

Association of mobile phone radiation with fatigue, headache, dizziness, tension and sleep disturbance in Saudi population

Thamir Al-Khlaiwi, Sultan A. Meo

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The widespread use of mobile phones has been increased over the past decade; they are now an essential part of business, commerce and society. The use of mobile phones can cause health problems. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to investigate the association of using mobile phones with fatigue, headache, dizziness, tension and sleep disturbance in the Saudi population and provide health and social awareness in using these devices.

Methods: This study was conducted in the Department of Physiology, College of Medicine, King Saud University, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the year 2002 to2003 . In the present study, a total of 437 subjects (55.1% male and39 .9% female) were invited, they have and had been using mobile phones. A questionnaire was distributed regarding detailed history and association of mobile phones with health hazards.

Results: The results of the present study showed an association between the use of mobile phones and health hazards. The overall mean percentage for these clinical findings in all groups were headache (21.6%), sleep disturbance (4.%), tension (3.9%), fatigue (3%) and dizziness (2.4%).

Conclusions: Based on the results of the present study, we conclude that the use of mobile phones is a risk factor for health hazards and suggest that long term or excessive use of mobile phones should be avoided by health promotion activities such as group discussions, public presentations and through electronic and print media sources.

Saudi Medical Journal2004 ; Vol. 25 (6): 732-736

The widespread use of mobile phones has been going sky-high over the past decade and now its use is an essential part of business, commerce and society. The fact that so many people own mobile phones attests to their perceived importance to the general public. The use of mobile phones and related technologies will continue to increase for the foreseeable future. Mobile phones are low power radio devices that transmit and receive radio frequency radiation at frequencies in the microwave range of900 - 1800MHz. Despite repeated horror stories on mobile phones in the media, nearly more than 500 million people worldwide use mobile phones. 1The extensive use of mobile phones has been accompanied by public debate on the possible adverse effects on human health. The concerns relate to the emissions of radio frequency (RF) radiation from the mobile phones and the base stations that receive and transmit the signals. There are 2 direct ways by which health could be affected as a result of exposure to RF radiation. These are thermal (heating) effects caused mainly by holding mobile phones close to the body and also as a result of possible non-thermal effects. 2Mobile phones may cause adverse health problems such as headache, sleep disturbance, impairment of short term memory and more seriously significant increases in the frequency of seizures in epileptic children, brain tumors and high blood pressure amongst users of mobile phones. 3In addition, mobile phones can cause discomfort, lack of concentration, dizziness, worm on ear and burning skin. 4In spite of its effects on different part of the body observed in different countries, its effect in Saudi population has not been reported yet, where mobile phones are excessively used. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the association of the use of mobile phones with fatigue, headache, dizziness, tension and sleep disturbance in Saudi population.

Methods. This study was conducted in the Department of Physiology, College of Medicine, King Khalid University Hospital, King Saud University, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, during the year 2002 to2003 . The sample consisted of 437 volunteer subjects recruited from College of Medicine, King Saud University and also from the different regions of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The sample was predominantly55 .1% male and39 .9% females with age ranging from18 - 42years were participated in this study.

A detailed questionnaire was constructed specifically for this study in Arabic language and was also translated into English. The questionnaire was designed so that it could be used in a structured interview context or by self-completion. It assessed general physical characteristics, occupation of the participants, medical history and different questions regarding the type of mobile phones, duration of possessing and their use, numbers and average duration of outgoing and incoming calls. Subjects with known history of anemia, diabetes mellitus, blood pressure, central or peripheral nerve diseases, hearing and vision problems, subject using any medication or computer professionals were excluded from the study. The analysis was primarily descriptive in nature and was performed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences program for windows. Comparison was carried out on the basis of percentage values between the groups.

Results. Table 1summarizes the number of participants; the sample was predominantly male55 .1% and39 .9% female with an age range of18 - 42years. The mean age was23 . 74+0 . 5years (mean ± SEM) for males and26 . 44±0 . 64(mean ± SEM) for females. Table 2 shows the duration of incoming or outgoing calls for respondents as a percentage of total numbers. The call duration was5 - 10minutes (59.5%),10 - 30minutes (22.4%),30 - 60minutes (10.5%),60 - 120minutes (4.6%) and greater than 120 minutes (2.5%). However,0 .5% subjects are included in missing systems; they did not mention the duration of calls. Table 3 demonstrates the health problems associated with duration of incoming or outgoing calls for respondents as a percentage of total numbers. The maximum associated percentage was found for headache, which was12 .6% with duration of calls of5 -10 minutes per day;4 .6% with10 - 30minutes,2 .1% with30 - 60minutes,2 .5% with60 - 120minutes and0 .7% with more than 120 minutes per day. However, the total percentage observed for headache was22 .4%, fatigue 3%, dizziness2 .7%, tension4 .4% and sleep disturbances4 .1%. Table4 characterizes the health problems associated with duration of exposure to mobile phones emissions. The associated percentage for headache was 1.8% with < 1year of exposure;14 .9% with1 - 5years of exposure and 4.1% with5 - 10years of exposure to mobile phones. Health problems for fatigue was0 .2% with < 1year,1 .8% with1 - 5years and0 .9% with 5- 10years of exposure to mobile phones. Tension and sleep disturbances was found in3 .7% with1 - 5years of exposure. However, the total percentage observed for headache was20 .8%, fatigue3 %, dizziness2 .5%, tension and sleep disturbances4 .1%.

Discussion. The operation of sensitive electronic equipment including mobile phones use is prohibited at many places including aircrafts and in hospitals; the reason is that their emissions might adversely interfere with the operation of sensitive electronic equipment and their possible deleterious effect. The well-liked belief is that adverse health effects can be induced mostly by the heating effect of Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) radiation. The reported adverse health effects and the extensive portfolio of non-thermal effects that have been published in the scientific literature during the last few years, which indicates that the kind of radiation now used in GSM phone can and does affects alive organisms in various non-thermal ways. 2There is an undeniable consistency between some of these non-thermal influences and the nature of many of the health problems reported 2such as headache, sleep disruption, impairment of short term memory and more seriously, significant increases in the frequency of seizures in some epileptic children and brain tumor amongst users of mobile phones. Keeping in view the hazards of mobile phones, the present study was designed to investigate the association of use of mobile phones with fatigue, headache, dizziness, tension and sleep disturbance in Saudi population and provide a health and social awareness regarding using these devices. The present study results demonstrated that, the health problems are associated with long term exposure to mobile phones emission, incoming or outgoing calls and length of calls per day. The overall mean percentage for these clinical findings in all groups was headache (21.7%), sleep disturbance (4%), tension (3.9%), fatigue (3%) and dizziness (2.4%). This is the first time that mobile phone health hazards have been addressed and studied in Saudi population. Eulitz et al 5suggested that mobile phones emit a pulsed high-frequency electromagnetic field (PEMF), which may penetrate the scalp and the skull and shows that these electromagnetic fields alter distinct aspects of the brains electrical response to acoustic stimuli. Reiser at al 6demonstrated that the extensive exposure to microwave radiation has been found to affect a wide variety of brain functions such as electrical activity (EEG), electrochemistry,7- 8permeability of the blood/brain barrier 9and to degrade the immune system. 10Becker and Marini, 11and Frhlich et al 12reported that headache is consistent with the fact that microwaves are known to non-thermally affect the dopamine-opiate system of the brain 11and to increase the permeability of the blood-brain barrier since both of these have been medically connected with headache. 12On the other hand, the reports of sleep disruption are consistent with the effect of GSM radiation on rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and on melatonin levels 13whereas, memory impairment is consistent with the finding that microwave radiation targets the hippocampus. 2Hermann and Hossmann, 14reported the adverse health effects of mobile phones and found that the use of mobile can cause sleep disturbance, memory problems, headaches, nausea, dizziness, promote cancer and high blood pressure. 15The present study is in agreement with the former results observed by Hermann and Hossmann.14 Hocking, 16reported that mobile phone use is ubiquitous, although the alleged health effects of low level radio-frequency radiation (RFR) used in transmission are contentious and also observed isolated reports of headache-like symptoms arising in some users. Our results are in conformity with these results. Nakamura et al 17demonstrated that exposure to high-density microwaves can cause detrimental effects on the eyes, testis and other tissues and induce significant biologic changes through thermal actions. Hocking and Westerman 18reported a case supportive of a neurological basis for some cases of dysesthesia associated with mobile phone use. Similarly, Weinberger and Richter19 observed headache and other neuropsychological symptoms in users of cellular telephones. The present study also confirms the results observed by Weinberger and Richter (2002).

Khudnitskii et al, 20studied the influence of ultrahigh frequency radiation caused by cellular phones on functional state of central nervous system, cardiovascular systems and local temperature changes in cellular phones users. The head area near the phone antenna appeared to be under the most intensive heating. Ultrahigh frequency radiation induces significant changes in local temperature and in physiologic parameters of central nervous and cardiovascular systems. Mann and Roschke 21investigated the influence of high-frequency electromagnetic field of digital mobile radio telephones on sleep in healthy humans. Besides a hypnotic effect with shortening of sleep onset latency, a REM suppressive effect with reduction of duration and percentage of REM sleep was found. Moreover, spectral analysis revealed qualitative alterations of the EEG signal during REM sleep with an increased spectral power density. Schilling22 reported the accidentally exposure to high levels of ultrahigh frequency radiation and experienced an immediate sensation of intense heating of the parts of the body in the electromagnetic field followed by a variety of clinical sign and symptoms such as pain, headache, numbness, paresthesiae, malaise, diarrhea, and skin erythema. The most notable problem was that of acute than chronic headache involving the part of the head, which was most exposed. The present study is in agreement with the results observed by Schilling. 22Santini et al23 reported that cellular phones user women significantly complained more often of sleep disturbance, discomfort, warmth, and picking on the ear during phone conversation in relation with calling duration per day and number of calls per day. Hocking 16reported a case series of 40 people who complained a burning sensation or dull headache was felt ipsilateral to the side of use of the phone. It occurred within minutes after use and lasted for minutes or hours. Similarly, Hocking and Westerman 24reported a case of a72 -year-old businessman who had onset of a persistent ‘bruised’ feeling on the scalp after extensive use of a mobile phone. In addition, Hocking and Westerman 18have studied a 34-year-old journalist who complained of occipital pain while using mobile phone. The present study supports the results observed by Hocking 16and Hocking and Westerman. 18Oftedal et al 25observed headaches, fatigue, sensations of warmth on the ear and behind/around the ear and burning sensations in the facial skin were experienced in connection with the use of a mobile phone. Our findings are in conformity with these results. Similarly, Sandstrom et al 4reported symptoms such as headaches, feelings of discomfort, warmth behind/around or on the ear and difficulties concentrating while using mobile phones. The number of complaints was higher for people using the digital (GSM) system with pulse modulated fields, than for those using the analogue (NMT) system. Our results correlate with the results observed by Sandstrom et al. 4Keeping in view the findings of the present study, our results are of importance in that they demonstrate the need of taking preventive measures.

In the present study, we found a relationship between headache, fatigue, dizziness, tension and sleep disturbances in subjects exposed to mobile phones emissions. It is advisable therefore; that the use of mobile phones is a risk factor for health hazards and suggest that excessive use of mobile phones should be avoided by health promotion activities, such as group discussion, public presentations and through electronic and print media sources. In addition, we also suggest more research is required to observe the effects of mobile phones with different systems of the human body along with clinical examination.

Mobile Phone Masts

Stephen Kearney

Stephen Kearney has taken up The Source’s long-standing offer to its readers, by contributing an article on the health dangers arising from the proliferation of mobile phone masts.

Do you remember the original denials about:

a.. Thalidomide,

b.. Asbestosis,

c.. Sheep Dip,

d.. Gulf War Syndrome,

e.. Lead in Petrol and

f.. BSE

Do you remember how the Government told us we had nothing to fear, when experience now shows us we had everything to fear and tax payers are still paying for the Government’s mistakes today?

Well, as a Film Producer would say - "Their back and bigger, more dangerous than ever and nothing can stop them!"

According to increasing numbers of scientists and researchers, the Government faces massive controversy over their handling of the siting of mobile phone masts.

There are already 35,000 erected in Great Britain and telecoms analysts Ovum estimate that an additional 100,000 are needed to service the new 3G networks.

That’s without including the many thousands more needed for (and the £2bn cost of) the Tetra/Airwave communication system, which has been "forced" upon our emergency services.

This system has already been described as ’out of date already’ and ’a white elephant’ by the Financial Mail, a ’risk to life’ in New York and a ’lemon’ in Australia and you will see the troubled waters that lie in the path of our Government.

Increasing numbers of scientific studies from across the world are recording adverse health effects from the pulsed microwave radiation emitted by mobile phones and mobile phone masts.

The International EMF Seminar in China in October 2003 (sponsored by the World Health Organisation) revealed that in the last ten years, out of 154 studies on radiation similar to that emitted by the mobile phone industry, 88 (57%) of them have highlighted biological effects such as cancer, etc.

Barry Trower, Academic and Author of the Tetra report for the Police Federation is quoted in March 2004 saying: "This government, Industry and Government Scientists will be responsible for more deaths (of civilians) in peace time than all the terrorist organisations ever".

The current situation is of such concern to many back bench MP’s including David Arness (Southend West) and Mr Richard Spring (Suffolk West), that the Government faces a back bench revolt.

Mr Richard Spring has stated: "The reality is that there are absolutely no controls on the siting of these masts. The whole thing is shambolic’".

Perhaps there is a small glimmer of light in the fight, as the government begins to look to appease the situation and ensure maximum votes at the forthcoming general election.

One example of this is the recent case when the ODPM (Office of the Deputy Prime Minister) issued an appeal against a high court decision to allow the erection of a 25 metre mast in close proximity to two Harrogate Primary Schools, saying that schools should have a veto over the erection of masts near their buildings.

These actions are reminiscent of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted, with Mr Prescott only having himself to blame for his past keeness to encourage the new mobile technology and raise billions for the Treasury Coffers.

New Labour have often accused the Tories of "wasting" the oil revenues from the North Sea, but what, one asks, have they got to show for the £22.5 billion they raised from the sale of the new 3G licenses?

It was and is in the power of the government to issue Planning Guidance that permission to erect these masts could be refused on health grounds, but have they done so?

My question to the Government is: "If there is a price to pay for mobile phones and associated their masts, shouldn’t it be up to the people to have the final say, as to what level of risk to their health is acceptable?"

In a statement, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister said: "The Secretary of State has decided to appeal the judgment in the case of T Mobile v First Secretary of State and Harrogate Borough Council.

"The judgment is inconsistent with case law authority, (and) previous judgments clearly recognise that both actual and perceived health concerns are relevant considerations."

Children and cell phones

Children and cellular

Today in the newspaper we have "Tips- how to choose a cellular phone for the child?" According to the newspaper, "although it's a sensitive group, the cellular companies do not make radiation-reduced devices for the children- and the parents get carried away after the prices and the models". One tip says that children are found to be 50% more sensitive to radiation than adults, and should only talk in emergencies.

Another tip says that parents should find what the purpose of the cellular is going to be: whether the child is going to use it only within the net, the family programmes or programmes for friends. (a contradicting tip to the tip which says to use it only for emergencies)

Parents also should "find out to which carrier most of the child's friends are subscribed". Parents should find out which Talkman prices are the cheapest, and if they don't choose Talkman, they should define the economic budget to the child. "9 years old children can definitely deal with a demand like that" says the newspaper. Parents can develop the consumer awareness of their child, especially if he's more mature, they can prefer the family programme (and there goes the "only in emergencies").

According to the Israeli company Cellcom, there are more and more children who say they want to use the cellular phone even in the age of 6. There are 600,000 6-12 years old children, 26%-56% of them use cellular phones. More than one third of them receive the devices from their parents so there are no accurate data.

It is also found that the children lead the purchase. The children don't compromise for an "old" model. It is a status symbol for the children and it's amazing to see how skilled they are in the knowledge of the new models. Cellcom survey shows that 60% of the children are owners of devices that support "advanced services" of ringtones and icons and 20% support SMS and JAVA. What is the reason for the cellular development among the children, according to the newspaper? First, it clarifies "it's only going to increase".

The reason is the "winning combination of two strong wills": 1. the will to be independent 2. the will of the parents to know where their child is every minute. In Israel the cellular phones are sold with a leaflet that tells the SAR of the phone, but the Consumer Association wants the SAR to be written also on every advertisement for the devices, and on the phone package, "in order that the consumer will be able to have a purchase decision that is free of pressures and will be able to control the radiation level that his child absorbs." (wanting to control the radiation the child absorbs is a complete illusion).

How long does the Consumer Association deal with the radiation level issue? "Many years". The result? "Nothing moved". (Cellular in a break", Shoshana Hen, Yediot Ahronot 5.8.2004)

"The Cellular Companies Punish Ulmert [ Ehud Ulmert is the communication minister]: They boycott the exhibition of the communication ministry

Partner company said it won't take part in Telecom exhibition and the other companies are expected to do the same. The reason: the communication minister decision to reduce the kishuriot fees for calls between the networks and SMSs. The exhibition is organized by the communication ministry and planned for November.

Partner spokesman said that the company decided not to take part in the Telecom 2004 because of the regulatoric developments and the economic implication on the cellular business. An official from the cellular companies said yesterday to Yediot Ahronot that "We won't give Ulmert the luxury also to bury the industry and also to be a star of a carnival funded by the companies". The crime of Ulmert is that he plans prices reduction for 2006, the kishuriot fees (moving from network to network- a reason to charge money of course) from 45 Agorot to 15 Agorot. SMS from 28.5 to 1 Agora. For the cellular companies it means to lose over 2.6 billion Shekels a year. They plan to appeal to the court. ( Gad Lior Y.A 5.8.2004)

The Israeli The Marker has a 25 pages special of Wireless project. It says about the wireless revolution that "40 years we have been waiting for it and it's here at last" and offers: "It's not a dream-all the products that will release your house from the cables tangle" and then it takes us for a trip around the hairdresser, yacht, hotel, an average home and cafe, because "pay attention, pay attention, these are the critical days, that determine how our future lives are going to look like", meaning the Wi Fi. The hairdresser says: "five months ago I decided to be more friendly to the environment and to give a better service to the customers". ["more friendly to the environment" by bringing radiation into the barber's shop? Very environment friendly] "I saw that people come with computers, I understood they need to be served" so he put a Wi Fi hotspot inside and so on...very, very aggressive marketing for the wireless. (The Marker August 2004 p. 107)
