The world's largest frozen peat bog is melting. An area stretching for a million square kilometres across the permafrost of western Siberia is turning into a mass of shallow lakes as the ground melts, according to Russian researchers just back from the region.

The sudden melting of a bog the size of France and Germany combined could unleash billions of tonnes of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere.

The news of the dramatic transformation of one of the world's least visited landscapes comes from Sergei Kirpotin, a botanist at Tomsk State University, Russia, and Judith Marquand at the University of Oxford.

Kirpotin describes an "ecological landslide that is probably irreversible and is undoubtedly connected to climatic warming". He says that the entire western Siberian sub-Arctic region has begun to melt, and this "has all happened in the last three or four years".

What was until recently a featureless expanse of frozen peat is turning into a watery landscape of lakes, some more than a kilometre across. Kirpotin suspects that some unknown critical threshold has been crossed, triggering the melting.

Western Siberia has warmed faster than almost anywhere else on the planet, with an increase in average temperatures of some 3 °C in the last 40 years. The warming is believed to be a combination of man-made climate change, a cyclical change in atmospheric circulation known as the Arctic oscillation, plus feedbacks caused by melting ice, which exposes bare ground and ocean. These absorb more solar heat than white ice and snow.

Similar warming has also been taking place in Alaska: earlier this summer Jon Pelletier of the University of Arizona in Tucson reported a major expansion of lakes on the North Slope fringing the Arctic Ocean.

The findings from western Siberia follow a report two months ago that thousands of lakes in eastern Siberia have disappeared in the last 30 years, also because of climate change (New Scientist, 11 June, p 16). This apparent contradiction arises because the two events represent opposite end of the same process, known as thermokarsk.

In this process, rising air temperatures first create "frost-heave", which turns the flat permafrost into a series of hollows and hummocks known as salsas. Then as the permafrost begins to melt, water collects on the surface, forming ponds that are prevented from draining away by the frozen bog beneath. The ponds coalesce into ever larger lakes until, finally, the last permafrost melts and the lakes drain away underground.

Siberia's peat bogs formed around 11,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age. Since then they have been generating methane, most of which has been trapped within the permafrost, and sometimes deeper in ice-like structures known as clathrates. Larry Smith of the University of California, Los Angeles, estimates that the west Siberian bog alone contains some 70 billion tonnes of methane, a quarter of all the methane stored on the land surface worldwide.

His colleague Karen Frey says if the bogs dry out as they warm, the methane will oxidise and escape into the air as carbon dioxide. But if the bogs remain wet, as is the case in western Siberia today, then the methane will be released straight into the atmosphere. Methane is 20 times as potent a greenhouse gas as carbon dioxide.

In May this year, Katey Walter of the University of Alaska Fairbanks told a meeting in Washington of the Arctic Research Consortium of the US that she had found methane hotspots in eastern Siberia, where the gas was bubbling from thawing permafrost so fast it was preventing the surface from freezing, even in the midst of winter.

An international research partnership known as the Global Carbon Project earlier this year identified melting permafrost as a major source of feedbacks that could accelerate climate change by releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. "Several hundred billion tonnes of carbon could be released," said the project's chief scientist, Pep Canadell of the CSIRO Division of Marine and Atmospheric Research in Canberra, Australia.

The Constitution gave us a government to govern America, not the world. It is none of our business what forms of government other countries have, just as it is none of our business whether the women in a foreign country wear burkhas or bikinis.
Surely you realize by now that either the Bush administration knew Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction or, even scarier, was dumb enough to believe it did have them. On Sept. 11, 2001, we had one enemy – a terrorist organization that calls itself al-Qaida. Instead of limiting our response to taking out that organization, President George Bush declared war on the world.

He bought the childishly unrealistic theory, concocted by mostly pro-Israeli neoconservatives, that we could take out Saddam Hussein and install a Jeffersonian democracy in Iraq, and that this fine example would spread liberal democracy to the entire Middle East. This was going to be cheap and easy, they said. It was not only a childish and simplistic theory, it was stupid. It's what you would expect from a bunch of mostly academics who have never heard the sound of gunfire and who don't read or speak Arabic, much less have ever spent any time in the area. The words of the National Anthem sung at sporting events state that we are 'the land of the free and the home of the brave.' However, the free are not those confined to paying their respects to fallen comrades within the narrow parameters as defined by the State. Telling my Vietnam combat veteran friend how he can mourn is not living in the land of the free. His resistance, however, is testament to our still being in the home of brave...

[Some pieces on Cindy Sheehan's quest for a meeting with the president in Crawford, Texas, which has swelled into a major media saga:

-- (1) The *Los Angeles Times* described how, after "President Bush today passed within 100 feet of the roadside encampment where the mother of an Iraq war casualty was inviting him to stop and talk, but his motorcade passed by the protest site without making contact," the president went to a "fund-raising event organized by the Republican National Committee and held at the Broken Spoke Ranch, owned by Stan and Kathy Hickey of Crawford. They were joined at the event by political advisor Karl Rove. Inside a large, air-conditioned tent decorated in a Western motif, the Bushes and about 200 RNC donors lunched on barbecued lamb, sausage, ribs, brisket and turkey breast, served family style with creamed corn, mashed potatoes, black-eyed peas, and okra. The lunch had been expected to generate about $2 million in contributions."

-- (2) The *Washington Post* reported in a story for Saturday's front page that Cindy Sheehan was now "working with a political consultant and a team of public relations professionals." The *Post* identified CodePink, TrueMajority, Fenton Communications, and Joe Trippi (who engineered Howard Dean's early successes) as among those working with her, and said the web site of the
*American Spectator* and "the Heart of Texas chapter of FreeRepublic.com, an online conservative forum" were gearing up to oppose her campaign. The *Post* also reported that her quest "has divided parts of her own family, some of whom sent an e-mail to news organizations distancing themselves from her protest."

-- (3) Reporting that Sheehan stated that she has separated from her husband "as a result of the war, and of her activism," the *New York Times* said that her vigil has "been able to focus what had become a scattershot antiwar effort." The *Times* report emphasized the growing reaction "from those who say her son's death does not give her the authority to criticize the war. CRAWFORD, Texas -- President Bush today passed within 100 feet of the roadside encampment where the mother of an Iraq war casualty was inviting him to stop and talk, but his motorcade passed by the protest site without making contact.

The fleeting encounter between the president's entourage and the antiwar assembly organized by Cindy Sheehan occurred near Bush's Prairie Chapel Ranch, where he and First Lady Laura Bush are spending a five-week summer vacation.

On their way to a Republican fund-raising event at a neighbor's ranch about three miles away, the Bushes passed directly by Camp Casey, the tent camp named after Sheehan's son, a 24-year-old Army mechanic who was killed in action in Iraq.

Although she met briefly with Bush after her son's death in April 2004, Sheehan has said she wants to talk to the president again about her objections to the war effort. She began her vigil Saturday, and has promised to stay in Crawford until Bush either meets with her or returns to Washington in early September.

As the president and first lady drove by shortly after 11 a.m. in a black Suburban sports-utility vehicle with dark tinted windows, Sheehan held up a sign asking, "Why do you make time for donors and not for me?"

Sheehan, of Vacaville, Calif., was joined by several dozen activists who stood behind a cordon of yellow police tape inside the triangular grassy median at the intersection of three country roads several miles west of Crawford. Facing them were at least a dozen Texas state troopers and county sheriff's officers.

Other demonstrators carried signs saying "Iraq Is Arabic For Vietnam" and "Bring Them Home Now." Some activists flashed peace symbols with their hands or held small white wooden crosses bearing the names of Iraq war casualties.

Along the roadside were hundreds of similar crosses and a growing number of tents and banners erected in recent days by Sheehan supporters, including other families of war casualties. One sign said, cryptically, "Republican Headquarters."

Organizers said as many as 300 activists have arrived in Crawford, and more were expected.

Participants in the event said they were disappointed that the president had not stopped at the encampment. "It would have been nice if he had, but we didn't expect he would," said Lietta Rugar of Bay Center, Wash., as a security helicopter circled overhead.

After the motorcade passed by, the demonstrators attended a prayer serviced led by the Rev. Bob Edgar, general secretary of the National Council of Churches in New York.

On Thursday, Bush expressed sympathy for Sheehan and others like her, but gave no indication that he planned to meet with her again. "She feels strongly about her position," Bush said. "And she has every right in the world to say what she believes. This is America."

After Friday's drive-by, the White House said Bush's views have not changed.

"The president made clear in his comments yesterday that he sympathizes with Ms. Sheehan," said White House spokeswoman Dana Perino. "He has met with Ms. Sheehan before, as he has with hundreds of military families. The pain of those who have lost loved ones is shared by the president and the American people."

The Bushes spent more than two hours at the fund-raising event organized by the Republican National Committee and held at the Broken Spoke Ranch, owned by Stan and Kathy Hickey of Crawford. They were joined at the event by political advisor Karl Rove.

Inside a large, air-conditioned tent decorated in a Western motif, the Bushes and about 200 RNC donors lunched on barbecued lamb, sausage, ribs, brisket and turkey breast, served family style with creamed corn, mashed potatoes, black-eyed peas and okra. The lunch had been expected to generate about $2 million in contributions.

On the way back to their own ranch, the presidential motorcade passed by Camp Casey a second time, again without stopping.

Gold Star Families for Peace, one of the groups sponsoring in Sheehan's anti-war effort, said it had paid $15,000 for TV ads that would begin running on Crawford cable channels near Bush's ranch. It said the ads ask Bush: "How many more of our loved ones need to die in this senseless war?"

The group said it planned to hold a rally at noon Saturday in a Crawford park, and then proceed by caravan to Camp Casey.

Earlier Friday, Bush taped his Saturday radio address, received his regular briefing, and went on a bike ride at the ranch, White House spokesman Trent Duffy said. The president was scheduled to attend a Little League baseball regional championship game Saturday evening in nearby Waco.

CRAWFORD, Tex. -- Cindy Sheehan vaulted into national consciousness this month on the power of her story as the grieving mother of a fallen solider.

But what began as a solitary campaign to force a meeting with President Bush by setting up camp along the road to his ranch has quickly taken on the full trappings of a political campaign. Sheehan is working with a political consultant and a team of public relations professionals, and now she is featured in a television ad.

Sheehan began her protest here last Saturday after crisscrossing the country for more than a year demanding answers on why Bush continues to wage what she calls an unjust war in Iraq. After her son Casey Sheehan, 24, was killed in Baghdad last year, she founded Gold Star Families for Peace, an antiwar organization that labored largely in obscurity -- until now.

In part, Sheehan's case has echoed as her grievances merged with what polls show is growing dissatisfaction with the war. But her cause has also been aided by political organizers who swiftly mobilized around her -- recognizing an opportunity to cause acute discomfort for a vacationing president and put a powerful emotional frame around the antiwar movement.

No one watching cable television news this week, dominated by coverage of Sheehan's crusade, could doubt that they largely achieved their aim.

Sheehan's Crawford encampment has swollen in the past week, as other antiwar protesters have flocked to Texas. Members of CodePink, a women's antiwar organization, have pitched their tent near Sheehan's.

TrueMajority, an antiwar group founded by Ben Cohen -- one of the creators of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream -- hired Fenton Communications, a Washington public relations firm that has worked intermittently with Sheehan over the past year to coordinate media coverage.

With this help, Sheehan has courted coverage from the traveling White House press corps with a news conference. A schedule of when relatives of other military casualties in Iraq are expected to join Sheehan here was distributed to reporters. Her team is coordinating an antiwar rally planned for Saturday.

Joe Trippi, the political consultant behind former Vermont governor Howard Dean's early success in the 2004 Democratic presidential primary race, hosted a conference with Sheehan for liberal Internet bloggers, hoping their online dispatches will draw even wider attention.

On Saturday, Sheehan launched a TV ad campaign hoping to achieve what her roadside vigil so far has not: a second chance to directly tell Bush about the devastation she has experienced since her son's death.

"Mr. President, I want to tell you face to face how much this hurts," Sheehan says in the ad, which will air with only a modest $15,000 buy of airtime in Waco, the nearest broadcast market to Bush's 1,600-acre spread. "How many more of our loved ones need to die in this senseless war?"

The rising profile of Sheehan's vigil has proved awkward for the president's staff, which has been reluctant to publicly refute the mother of a soldier killed in Iraq, even as they do not wish to be seen as bowing to what they view as an orchestrated publicity campaign. On Friday, as Bush's motorcade whizzed by Sheehan's camp on the way to a nearby barbecue expected to raise $2 million for the Republican National Committee, Sheehan held up a sign saying "Why do you make time for donors and not for me?"

Bush has been publicly respectful, responding to Sheehan's case with reporters on Thursday and saying he has thought "long and hard about her position," even though he disagrees with her about the war.

Still, as Sheehan has stepped onto the media stage, she has become a target in the way that happens inevitably to anyone involved in high-stakes political combat -- with opponents questioning her motives and examining her statements for contradictions.

"Despite what the headlines say, Sheehan, 48, is more antiwar protester than grieving mother," said a column Friday in the online version of the *American Spectator*. "She is co-founder of Gold Star Families for Peace, an organization that seeks to impeach George W. Bush and apparently to convince the U.S. government to surrender to Muslim terrorists."

Meanwhile, the Heart of Texas chapter of FreeRepublic.com, an online conservative forum, has scheduled a demonstration here for Saturday to counteract Sheehan's protest and show support for Bush and the war.

Others also have raised questions about Sheehan's account of her first meeting with Bush, which occurred two months after her son's death in April 2004. Sheehan was part of a larger group of grieving family members who met with Bush at Fort Lewis in Washington state.

After the meeting, she was quoted by the newspaper in her hometown of Vacaville, Calif., as saying that the president seemed sympathetic. Subsequently, she has said that Bush treated her callously during the meeting.

Sheehan said her initial reaction to Bush reflected her shock over her son's death. In addition, she said she grew increasingly angry toward Bush as it became clear that the United States had not found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and evidence emerged that the administration had discussed an invasion of Iraq before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. She has said that she has become further angered as the administration has sent mixed signals about its plans for withdrawing troops from Iraq.

While Sheehan's protest has galvanized support among antiwar activists, it has divided parts of her own family, some of whom sent an e-mail to news organizations distancing themselves from her protest.

"We do not agree with the political motivations and publicity tactics of Cindy Sheehan. She now appears to be promoting her own personal agenda and notoriety at the expense of her son's good name and reputation," read an e-mail sent to the *Reporter* newspaper, in Vacaville. The e-mail was signed by Casey Sheehan's aunt Cherie Quartarolo on behalf of his paternal grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

"The Sheehan family lost our beloved Casey in the Iraq War and we have been silently, respectfully grieving," the e-mail says. "The rest of the Sheehan family supports the troops, our country and our president, silently, with prayer and respect."

Sheehan, however, told the paper that the admonition came from in-laws who often disagreed with her.

"We have always been on separate sides of the fence politically and I have not spoken to them since the elections when they supported the man who is responsible for Casey's death," Sheehan said. "The thing that matters to me is that my family, Casey's dad and my other three kids, are on the same side of the fence that I am."

CRAWFORD, Tex. -- This is not the place to expect a sighting of Viggo Mortensen, the star of "The Lord of the Rings." Or at least it wasn't when President Bush began his annual vacation here earlier this month.

But something has happened to Crawford over the last week. The sleepy summer air has been punctured by a blast of antiwar energy, with carloads of activists appearing every afternoon to join a vigil begun by the mother of a soldier who died in Iraq.

Flowers are delivered by the dozen at Camp Casey, as the muddy outpost established by the mother, Cindy Sheehan, near the Bush ranch is now called. White crosses have been hammered into the dirt, pink banners strewn across the trees, the police posted at bends in the road to wave gawkers along.

When Mr. Mortensen drove up the dusty lane unannounced on Thursday to huddle with Ms. Sheehan in a roadside trailer, it was just one more jarring sight in a small town accustomed to seeing mostly the reporters and buttoned-down administration officials it has come to know over the last five years.

No one has been more challenged by the round-the-clock campsite than Mr. Bush, who sped past in his motorcade for the first time on Friday and, as expected, did not stop to grant Ms. Sheehan's request for a meeting.

But even before Ms. Sheehan arrived, this sort of challenge was not entirely an unexpected one for Mr. Bush, who by the end of this summer will have spent more time away from the White House than any other president in history. His five-week sojourn at his 1,600-acre ranch offers the protesters ample opportunity to camp out for extended periods in front of the national media at a time of sharp spikes in the casualties in Iraq, and as public polling data suggests the lowest support for the war since it began.

Thus has Ms. Sheehan's vigil been able to focus what had become a scattershot antiwar effort. And in the process, she has triggered resentment in Crawford, within her own divided family, and across the nation, from those who say her son's death does not give her the authority to criticize the war. How one 48-year-old woman from Vacaville, Calif., invigorated the antiwar movement, altered the landscape of the president's vacation town and drew a Hollywood celebrity out into the Texas heat may be as much the result of external factors as Ms. Sheehan's compelling tale. Unlike earlier Crawford protests that lasted a day or two and drew little attention outside Texas, her encampment, now entering its second week, has turned into a daily stage for interviews and encounters between the war's advocates and critics.

On Friday, as Ms. Sheehan waited for the presidential motorcade to come by, she was approached by a soldier from Fort Hood, Tex., who had been in Iraq and wanted to challenge her view that there is nothing good about the war. She pulled him away from the glare of the cameras to explain the impact of her son's death. Afterward, she said the soldier had admitted that his mother would probably be protesting as well if he died.

"I told him, I think we both agree, we want the troops to come home as soon as possible," she said later, as she rested in a trailer. "The difference is our definition of 'soon.' "

The toll of her son's death has carried over into Ms. Sheehan's marriage: She said she and her husband separated a few months ago as a result of the war, and of her activism. Although she and her estranged husband are both Democrats, she said she is more liberal than he is, and now, more radicalized.

"He agrees with the philosophy of what I'm doing," Ms. Sheehan said, "but not the intensity. He wanted me to pull back, but I couldn't. We grieved in two completely different ways."

Earlier this week, relatives on Mr. Sheehan's side of the family issued public statements attacking Ms. Sheehan for her protest. Only her surviving son, Adam, will join her at the site in a few weeks; her two daughters are in Europe, she said, "hopefully enjoying themselves" after a year of grieving.

Ms. Sheehan's natural, sincere look and earthy appearance on television do not betray the semiprofessional operation running the show at Camp Casey: organizers from Code Pink, a women's peace organization, and a public relations expert from Fenton Communications, are in constant Blackberry and cellphone communication with the news media and keep careful watch of Ms. Sheehan's schedule.

They said the bills for their work are being paid by donations and various groups.

In another publicity-savvy move, Ms. Sheehan and a group of military families known as Gold Star Families for Peace released a $15,000 television advertisement buy in the Crawford area on Friday. "This ad is intended to act as a message to President Bush," Ms. Sheehan said in the advertisement, according to a press release. "All I wanted was an hour out of his extended vacation time, but he's refused to meet with me and the other military families. We just want honest answers."

Helping the cause further are volunteers from the Crawford Peace House, a worn cottage that opened in 2003 as a gathering spot for antiwar protesters who occasionally come through town.

Organizers at the house played host to a few events in the 2004 campaign, including an outdoor screening of Michael Moore's movie "Fahrenheit 9/11," but its driveway has never been more crowded than over the last few days. By Wednesday night, as false rumors of an altercation with the police near the Bush ranch spread, volunteers took turns answering the constantly ringing phone and stirring pots of vegetable stew to take to the demonstrators.

One woman took a call from a stranger in Portland, Ore., who had researched the name Sheehan and reported that it means "peacemaker" in the Irish language.

Another visitor came through the front door wanting to know if legal advice was needed. Volunteers streamed in and out of the house, taking handfuls of trail mix that had been set out and admiring the piles of flower bouquets sent to Ms. Sheehan in care of the antiwar group.

Back at Camp Casey, there have been moments of tension between the protesters and local residents. Neighbors have driven pick-ups through mud puddles, revved their engines and careened close to the vigil. By Friday, rumors of a counterprotest were rampant; the demonstrators braced for a reported busload of pro-war activists from Dallas. By late afternoon, they had not arrived.

But a woman from Ohio had driving two days with her 13-year-old son to see Ms. Sheehan and express her support. Jill Forsythe, 43, a computer programmer, said she made the trip from Dayton because she had, simply, "been following the story on the Internet and I just wanted Cindy to know I support her."

Die Österreicher scheinen es uns wieder einmal vorzumachen. Die Alpenrepublik hat nicht nur halb so viele Arbeitslose, sondern auch in Sachen Mobilfunk scheinen unsere Nachbarn ideenreicher und klüger zu handeln als wir Deutschen.

Wenn am 1. Januar 2006 die niederösterreichische Handymasten-Steuer in Kraft tritt, dann könnten einige Teile in dem österreichischen Bundesland zur handyfreien Zone werden. Nach Aussage der Österreichischen Mobilfunkbetreiber könnten einige Gebieten deren Einwohnerdichte unter 40 Personen pro Quadratkilometer liegt zur „Mobilfunkfreien Zone“ werden, weil sich der Betrieb durch die Miete und die neue Steuer nicht mehr rentiert.

Endlich, so könnte man sagen werden „Handyfreie Zonen“ geschaffen, die den durch Mobilfunkstrahlung Schwerbetroffenen wieder einen lebenswerten Raum bieten. Die Absicht der Niederösterreichischen Landesregierung ist es den Wildwuchs der Antennenmasten einzudämmen, sie schafft aber – ungewolltermaßen – wieder mehr Lebensqualität für (leidgeplagte) Menschen.

Der Arbeitskreis Elektro-Biologie e.V. hat schon vor über 10 Jahren eine Handysteuer gefordert und ist dafür belacht worden. Stellen Sie sich mal vor für jedes Handy würde pro Monat eine Handysteuer von 1 € erhoben. Bei 70 Millionen registrierten Handys würde das im Jahr über 800 Millionen € erbringen! Dieses Geld sollte sowohl für die Erforschung nieder- und hochfrequenter Felder eingesetzt werden als auch für die Ansparung eines Fonds der in 10 Jahren zur Finanzierung der bis dahin auftretenden HF-Schäden verwandt wird.

Sicher werden diese Vorschläge die helle Empörung der Mobilfunkbetreiber und unserer Politiker auslösen, aber gerade ein Blick über die südliche Landesgrenze zeigt uns doch, dass es auch anders geht. Das Hauptargument der Mobilfunkbetreiber wird sein, dass dann einige Regionen keine schnell erreichbaren Rettungsdienste mehr haben und Menschen sterben müssen. Wenn so von Betreiberseite argumentiert wird, dann muss man eine Gegenrechnung aufmachen, die lautet: wie viele Menschen verunglücken mit ihrem Auto, weil sie während der Autofahrt mit dem Handy telefoniert haben.

Ich kenne Untersuchungen, die belegen, dass der Volkswirtschaft mehr Schäden durch Handyunfälle entstehen als Nutzen durch rasche Hilfe. Ich weiß, es ist unethisch menschliches Leben mit Geld aufzuwiegen, aber die Diskussion zu diesem Thema ist nicht von mir erfunden worden sondern durch die Vertretern der Mobilfunkbetreiber auf unzähligen Podiumsdiskussionen und Mobilfunk-Werbeveranstaltungen.

Haben wir den Mut und machen es den Österreichern nach! Der AEB fordert unsere Politiker auf, erhebt endlich Steuern auf Mobilfunkstationen und Handys !

Rio 1992 and art. 174 European Treaty say that if there are strong indications (even if scientific proof is not 100%) that environmental pollution threatens health, then officials HAVE TO take measures to reduce the risks. There are strong indications (all the epdidemiologica research finds negative health effects for those in the vicinity of masts - see http://www.stopumts.nl and there is a huge body of evidence by testimonials; half of the laboratory research shows negative effects on health, so the only question is why the other half does not represent true life, what are the missing parameters) that the environmental pollution by radiofrequency radiation has negative effects on health. There is no jurisprudence yet based on this principle anchored in international law, except for one case in Haaksbergen, The Netherlands. There, in summary proceedings the case against Vodafone was won and now the long procedure has started.

All credit to mother-of-two Barbara Potter who tied herself to the base station of a mast in Nether Hall Road, Leicester, before workmen arrived with the mast on a truck. Despite a petition of 78 signatures against the mast, a spokesman for 3, is reported to warn that ultimately, the mast would go up as they have planning permission for that site.

This is an act of honour from a brave woman on a crusade against this bullying approach of forcing mast installations on people who do not want them in their area.

While I acknowledge the honour and bravery of this woman and totally understand her motivation, I do worry that this approach will ultimately achieve nothing, or that local people might find themselves in trouble with the law. Operators and their lawyers have no regard for ordinary people.

Her community should contact the local MP and flood him/her with letters asking for changes in planning procedures. It is the Government they need to put pressure on, not the council. This Government is putting pressure on councils to pass these applications by threatening to withhold part of the financial budget for councils who refuse too many applications which are overturned at appeal. What would communites do if essential services were cut or council tax was increased? Protest? Having said that, communites could try to talk to elected councillors to see if it is possible to work together and find a way to keep these masts at bay, or they could contact Mast Sanity for advice on how to object to planning applications now it is so restricted. Some communities are also staging peaceful protests at regular intervals to make the media, and therefore MPs and Government, aware of their feelings about masts in communities.

To me it does not seem fair that those who are protecting their families or their basic human rights should end up in trouble with the law, so I have presented the lawful ways to try to achieve what they want.

On the Non-ionizing Radiation Red Herring

Reports relating radiofrequency (RF) energy exposures to humans seem inevitably to note distinctions between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. For those not formally trained as scientific researchers, and even for non-physicist bioeffects professionals, there persists a notion that this demarcation, ionizing versus non-ionizing, establishes some barrier separating hazardous from non-hazardous exposures. The common argument holds that since x-rays and ultraviolet rays are ionizing radiations known to cause various kinds of cancers that it must only be ionizing radiation that causes cancer. The truth of the matter is that researchers don’t know that the ionizing capability of the radiation is the causative mechanism.

Ionization as it is referred to in this context means the liberating of an electron from an atom. Only electromagnetic radiation of sufficient energy can liberate an electron from an atom. For metals, such as gold or copper, the concept of ionization energies is straightforward and describes the effect of absorption of photons within the material. However, in biologic systems comprised of complex organs, cell structures, and extensive molecules such as DNA the restriction of disruptive effects via ionization is entirely removed. In short, maintaining and professing a belief that only ionizing radiation holds a capability to damage tissue is of itself without scientific foundation.

In fact, the scattering of ionizing radiation throughout biological tissue efficiently breaks the covalent bonds that are the basis for construction of organic molecules. It may well be this effect and not the inherent ionizing capability of a particular frequency or wavelength that gives rise to initiation or promotion of cancers. It’s somewhat like a bullet shot into a concrete room and ricocheting from the walls, ceiling and floor. Each time the bullet hits a surface it loses a little energy while continuing to bounce about until the energy is fully spent. For a high-energy photon scattering through living tissue, each of the multiple contacts leaves behind some energy that can destroy the bonds that form the molecules.

The distinction between ionizing and non-ionizing loses all meaning for biological applications. The ionization potential refers to the photoelectric effect whereby an electron is liberated from an atom or dissociated from an atom in an ionic molecule and is accomplished via a single photon absorption event.

By contrast, of interest for biological applications is the energy necessary to disrupt one or more covalent bonds of which the biological system is comprised. For example, covalent bonds in human tissue may be disrupted at energy levels hundreds of times lower than necessary for ionization.

In the presence of an exogenous energy source of sufficient magnitude sequential photon absorption may lead to continually increasing excited energy states until bond disruption occurs. No such comparable mechanism or effect is available for ionization since the allowed energy states do not provide for sequential photon absorption to achieve ionization. It’s like the old saying, “you can’t get there from here”. Well, for the ionization argument it’s true. RF energy doesn’t let you get to ionization. But, most important is that ionization never has been the threshold. Clearly, by now we must all agree that it is not necessary to ionize a DNA molecule to disrupt one or more of the molecule’s covalent bonds. For the instance of covalent bond disruption in complex molecules the energy may be provided by means other than single photon absorption. And since that is accepted the ionizing/non-ionizing argument becomes inconsequential.

Single atoms have well defined and distinct energy bands that allow only specific energy states for the electrons. In order to ionize, eject an electron, it is necessary to provide a photon having sufficient energy to move the electron from an allowed energy state to a completely free state in one step. Multiple photon absorption is not permitted. This is the basis for the photoelectric effect - i.e. ionization.

Atoms in close proximity to one another establish a more complex system of allowed energy states. As atoms move close together the probability density functions indicate that there is some overlap and energy band shifting occurs. That is, additional allowed energy states are created due to the proximity of multiple atoms. For complex macromolecules, such as human DNA comprised of many thousands of interrelated atoms, the allowed energy states form a virtual continuum. The complex energy state structure of macromolecules provides for a significantly different energy absorption and dissipation profile. This energy state structure is so dissimilar from the single atom picture that it makes it impossible to apply the ionization argument.

RF energy absorption in biologic tissue takes place via an energy conversion process. Photon energy is converted to phonon energy better known as heat energy. Phonon energy is more familiarly observed as vibrational, translational, or rotational motion of atoms constrained by their covalent bonds. The absorbed energy may either reside at the absorption site, in which case the site is said to be in an excited state, or the energy may be dispersed through the system. If RF energy is incident at a rate that is greater than the energy dispersion rate then subsequent photon absorptions at any particular site, which has experienced a prior absorption event, will lead to a change in energy state to a second higher allowed energy level. Succeeding photon energy absorptions may continue up to the point where the covalent bond ceases to exist by virtue of the increasingly excited energy state.

Although the energy conversion process yields heat energy - phonon energy - there need not be any measurable temperature variation. In fact, the very use of the distinctions between thermal and non-thermal, or athermal is another “red herring”. Since all energy absorption is thermal by nature there is, strictly speaking, no such thing as non-thermal or athermal energy absorption.

Instead, when speaking of energy absorption it may be more appropriate to speak of measurable or not measurable temperature rise. In either case there is an increase in thermal energy whether it be on the order of pico-joules (immeasurable by typical thermometric means) or milli-joules.

RF energy photons are particularly suited for deep penetration into human tissue. Infrared, visible light, and ultraviolet radiation does not penetrate human tissue to any appreciable extent. However, the penetration capabilities of RF radiation puts it in the same category as x-ray radiation, which is also a deep penetrating energy. This penetrating characteristic of x-ray radiation and RF radiation provides that a single photon of x-ray energy may scatter through the tissue or molecule and disrupt many, many covalent bonds even without liberating an electron from an atom (in other words an ionizing event is not required) while RF radiation may be less extensive in bond disruptions until exposures are encountered that overcome inherent energy dispersion mechanisms. In essence the effects can be identical - the disruption of covalent bonds is essentially what destroys DNA molecules and genetic information and leads to neo-plastic transformation of cells.

Although a single x-ray photon may destroy molecular bonds RF energy can effect damage by multiple photon absorption. For example, a cell phone emits about 8.9 x 1021 photons per second per square centimeter at the surface of the human head. For those unfamiliar with the scientific notation of that number, its magnitude appears more dramatic when written in standard notation as 8,900,000,000,000,000,000,000 photons per square centimeter per second.

Consider, then, that the energy from each and every photon absorbed will disturb the equilibrium of the system while the energy is being diffused and dispersed. Biological systems, and in particular the human brain do not have the capability to handle the massive dose of photon energy coming from such radiation absorption. Under normal circumstances, when not exposed to high doses of RF energy, the body compensates for naturally occurring damages. During high dose RF energy exposures the biological protection and repair mechanisms may be overwhelmed and irreparable disruptions, caused by the radiation, lead to widespread submicroscopic damage including permanent DNA damage.

It will serve as little comfort to know that exposure to cell phone towers provides an RF energy dose only slightly lower at about 7 x 1018 photons per square centimeter per second (7,000,000,000,000,000,000) and that’s at a distance of a few hundred feet from the tower.

Patrick Fitzgerald Requests Patricia Cornwell Scandal Material for Grand Jury - Report of Indictments of Pres. Bush and V.P. Cheney

It's good that U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, and his staffer Randall (Randy) Samborn (sometimes spelled 'Sanborn' in press reports), have requested from me in the Netherlands, the material involved in the ongoing legal issues with Bush celebrity friend and contributor Patricia Cornwell, and Cornwell's crimes of court fraud, bribery and extortion with U.S. federal judge Robert Payne, who was appointed to office by the Bushes.

Internet reports are that Fitzgerald's office, via Randy Samborn, are NOT denying that his grand jury has already secretly "returned" (i.e., charged or issued) indictments against President Bush and Vice President Cheney themselves, as well as others ( click here for report ).

Am Freitag berichtete die Umweltschutzorganisation von einem Großprojekt der indonesischen Regierung, das riesige Flächen an Bergregenwäldern vernichten würde. Nach Informationen des WWF soll auf der Insel Borneo die größte Ölpalmen-Plantage der Welt entstehen. Die Ausmaße entsprächen mit 1,8 Millionen Hektar "der Größe Sachsens". Mitten im geplanten Anbaugebiet lägen auch die beiden größten Nationalparks Borneos. Außerdem entsprängen dort 14 der 20 größten Flüsse und versorgten die 18 Millionen Bewohner der Insel mit Trinkwasser. Die Organisation verwies auf eine Studie des Zentrums für Internationale Forstwirtschafts-Forschung (CIFOR), die beweise, dass das Gebiet für den Anbau von Ölpalmen überhaupt nicht geeignet sei. Der WWF vermutet daher, dass es den Investoren hauptsächlich um die Einnahmen durch die Regenwaldabholzung geht.

CAMP CASEY: DAY 6 By Cindy Sheehan Huffington Post

Day 6 began early yesterday morning when people in cars drove by our camp a few times and blasted on their horns. I just assume they were blaring their approval of us.

Before we get to the less than negative things that are happening out at Camp Casey and in the world at large, over 700 people showed up at the Camp yesterday. There were more people, flowers, cards, mail, interviews, laughter, heartache, camaraderie, excitement, and just sheer work.

We had the first birthday party last night at our little event. Alicia from Austin turned 17 and they came to Crawford to celebrate with a cake. Alicia said that she wanted to be out here for her birthday. So many great people from so many parts of the country and our world are here.

Yesterday was kind of a blur to me. From running around from interview to interview, to getting a visit from Viggo Mortensen, it was a whirlwind of activity. I have discovered that the White House press corps is always looking for something to do and someone to cover. We have been happy to oblige them. We had a press conference today with Gold Star Families for Peace and Military Families Speak Out members. It was very effective when people who actually have skin in the game ask the president to be held accountable for the words he has actually said.

Still putting out the O'Reilly fires of me being a traitor and using Casey's name dishonorably, my in-laws sent out a press statement disagreeing with me in strong terms; which is totally okay with me, because they barely knew Casey. We have always been on separate sides of the fence politically and I have not spoken to them since the election when they supported the man who is responsible for Casey's death. The thing that matters to me is that our family -- Casey's dad and my other 3 kids are on the same side of the fence that I am.

November 2, 2004 was not George Bush's accountability moment: today is. We are finished allowing him to get away with deceiving the American public and abusing his power.

We are mad as hell and we're not taking it anymore.

TRANSCRIPT FROM INTERVIEW WITH CINDY SHEEHAN 'Countdown with Keith Olbermann' for Aug. 11

KEITH OLBERMANN, HOST: There were more than five people in Crawford, Texas, today, but for our purposes, we will concentrate on five. Four of them you know -- President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, and Secretaries Rice and Rumsfeld.

And then there is Cindy Sheehan. She is what we used to call a Gold Star Mother, a mother who lost a son in military service. And she's camped out near the president's ranch, demanding a meeting with him to ask him to bring home those troops who did not meet her son's fate. Cindy Sheehan joins us tonight.

Cindy Sheehan may or may not have had a bona fide complaint that President Bush was refusing to see her to talk about Iraq and the deaths of young men and women there like her son. He had, after all, met with her before. But then, somebody decided that Ms. Sheehan had had hit enough of a public nerve. Suddenly she had political enemies, and they were trying to discredit her.

Our fifth story on the COUNTDOWN now, her story is about more than just her protests. It's about the role of dissent in a country founded on the right to dissent. It's a story now so big that even though Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, and Donald Rumsfeld met with the president at his ranch today, the news from Crawford is mostly about Cindy Sheehan. She joins us in a moment.

First, our White House correspondent, David Gregory.

DAVID GREGORY, MSNBC CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Since August 2, when the president left for a vacation on his Texas ranch, 38 American troops have died in Iraq. It is that grim reality of war that appeared to weigh on Mr. Bush today. Flanked by his national security team, he took pains to address the public's growing opposition to the conflict.

GEORGE W. BUSH, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: Well, I grieve for every death. It breaks my heart to think about a family weeping over the loss of a loved one.

GREGORY: The president added, he has heard the call from war critics to pull out now.

BUSH: And I've thought about their cry and their sincere desire to reduce the loss of life by pulling our troops out. I just strongly disagree.

GREGORY: Such a move, he argued, would embolden terrorists also calling for a U.S. withdrawal. The message, the president fears.

BUSH: You know, the (INAUDIBLE), the, the, the United States is weak, and all we've got to do is intimidate and they'll leave.

GREGORY: As for when troops would return, Mr. Bush dampened recent talk of an exit strategy today, saying that even when his top commanders talk about a substantial drawdown by next spring, they are merely speculating. Additional troops may be needed when Iraqis vote on a new constitution.

But one military expert says the unspoken reality is that our troops in Iraq, now 138,000 strong, are spread too thin.

GEN. BARRY MCCAFFREY (RET.), U.S. ARMY: This level of deployment over this small an Army and Marine Corps is not sustainable beyond next summer.

GREGORY: Congressional war critics accuse Mr. Bush of failing to level with the public.

SEN. JACK REED (D), RHODE ISLAND: I don't think the president is making the point clear about the range of difficulty.

GREGORY (on camera): Today the president did highlight the progress, namely a political process moving forward, and the ultimate goal, a free Iraq to serve as a bulwark against terror.

The question is, how long will the American public wait for the strategy to pay off?

OLBERMANN: At about the same time the president spoke to the media today, the mother of Army Specialist Casey Sheehan, who died at Sadr City, Iraq, in April 2004, held a news conference of her own, joined by other families. Cindy Sheehan pledged to stay camped outside that ranch for the duration of the president's August vacation, adding that if he does not talk with her there, she may to go Washington in September.

And while the president did not talk with her directly today, he did finally address her presence and her purpose.

BUSH: I sympathize with Mrs. Sheehan. She feels strongly about her position. And I have -- she has every right in the world to say what she believes. This is America. She has the right to her position. And I've thought long and hard about her position. I've heard her position from others, which is, get out of Iraq now.

And it would be a mistake for the security of this country and the ability to lay the foundations for peace in the long run if we were to do so.

CINDY SHEEHAN, LOST HER SON IN IRAQ: Hey, Keith, no problem.

OLBERMANN: You heard what the president said today at his news conference. You heard that clip of him just there. What's your response to that?

SHEEHAN: Right. I don't want the president's sympathy. You know, I want to talk to him, and I want answers to my questions. And I want him to tell me the noble cause that my son died for. And I want him to stop using my son's name and the name of the other lost loved ones and Gold Star Families for Peace. We want him to stop using our children's name to justify the continued killing.

SHEEHAN: Good question. June of 2004 is a lot different than August of 2005. For one thing, in June of 2004, I was -- had buried my son nine weeks before the meeting. I was a woman in a deep state of shock, in a deep state of grief. And you know what? I am still in a deep state of grief. And thanks to George Bush, I will be in a deep state of grief for the rest of my life.

But I'm not in shock anymore. The Duelfer weapons of mass destruction report came out, the 9/11 commission report came out, the Downing Street memos came out, the Senate Intelligence Committee report came out. These have all come out since my son was killed. They show categorically that my son was‹his murder was premeditated, that there was no reason to invade Iraq.

And that's what I want the answers to today, in August of 2005.

OLBERMANN: Another part of this story that has developed in terms of the criticism and this political flashpoint that has developed around you, that seems so reminiscent of a lot of protests. I kept thinking about your camp there, and it sort of being a parallel world to that, the whole Terri Schiavo protest situation that just became a Mideast phenomenon.

There is an e-mail that purports to be from members of your family that denounces your presence there in Crawford. It was sent to a right-wing Web site. Is there any truth in it? Are there members of your family who are upset with what you're doing there?

SHEEHAN: I would think so, yes. I think it's great. And if he would come out right now, it would really defuse the momentum, and I don't want to give them any hints. And I think that's something they've probably already thought about.

But, you know, but we're here. We're committed. We're staying the whole month of August, and then we're moving to Washington, D.C. And we're going to have a 24-hour vigil on his front lawn to keep the pressure on. The pressure is there. Sixty-two percent of Americans want our troops home. And this is giving them a voice to stand up and be counted and say, You know, we want our country back, and we want our troops home.

OLBERMANN: Cindy Sheehan, thanks much for taking time to join us tonight.

This is George Bush’s accountability moment. That’s why I’m here. The mainstream media aren’t holding him accountable. Neither is Congress. So I’m not leaving Crawford until he’s held accountable. It’s ironic, given the attacks leveled at me recently, how some in the media are so quick to scrutinize -- and distort -- the words and actions of a grieving mother but not the words and actions of the president of the United States.

But now it’s time for him to level with me and with the American people. I think that’s why there’s been such an outpouring of support. This is giving the 61 percent of Americans who feel that the war is wrong something to do -- something that allows their voices to be heard. It’s a way for them to stand up and show that they DO want our troops home, and that they know this war IS a mistake… a mistake they want to see corrected. It’s too late to bring back the people who are already dead, but there are tens of thousands of people still in harm’s way.

There is too much at stake to worry about our own egos. When my son was killed, I had to face the fact that I was somehow also responsible for what happened. Every American that allows this to continue has, to some extent, blood on their hands. Some of us have a little bit, and some of us are soaked in it.

People have asked what it is I want to say to President Bush. Well, my message is a simple one. He’s said that my son -- and the other children we’ve lost -- died for a noble cause. I want to find out what that noble cause is. And I want to ask him: “If it’s such a noble cause, have you asked your daughters to enlist? Have you encouraged them to go take the place of soldiers who are on their third tour of duty?” I also want him to stop using my son’s name to justify the war. The idea that we have to “complete the mission” in Iraq to honor Casey’s sacrifice is, to me, a sacrilege to my son’s name. Besides, does the president any longer even know what “the mission” really is over there?

Casey knew that the war was wrong from the beginning. But he felt it was his duty to go, that his buddies were going, and that he had no choice. The people who send our young, honorable, brave soldiers to die in this war, have no skin in the game. They don’t have any loved ones in harm’s way. As for people like O’Reilly and Hannity and Michelle Malkin and Rush Limbaugh and all the others who are attacking me and parroting the administration line that we must complete the mission there -- they don’t have one thing at stake. They don’t suffer through sleepless nights worrying about their loved ones

Before this all started, I used to think that one person couldn’t make a difference... but now I see that one person who has the backing and support of millions of people can make a huge difference.

That’s why I’m going to be out here until one of three things happens: It’s August 31st and the president’s vacation ends and he leaves Crawford. They take me away in a squad car. Or he finally agrees to speak with me.

If he does, he’d better be prepared for me to hold his feet to the fire. If he starts talking about freedom and democracy -- or about how the war in Iraq is protecting America -- I’m not going to let him get away with it.

Like I said, this is George Bush’s accountability moment.

When I first heard that Cindy Sheehan had camped out in front of President Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas, it reminded me of another woman who sat down in the front of a bus because she was tired and had had enough.

Then I thought, here is yet another painful example in our world today. We are tired of young men and women around the world dying needlessly, without purpose, and leading to escalating violence between nations, in our country, in our communities, in our schools.

Women from around the country are uniting in Texas. It is time to ask ourselves why we are not using the knowledge and methods we already have to resolve conflict in nonviolent ways! We have not yet invested in organizing the wealth of information and resources we currently have and creating the structure to do so. It is time to do this.

The focus of a cabinet level Department of Peace is the nonviolent resolution of conflict internationally and domestically.

What would a Department of Peace be doing? How might it make a difference? We would be working within our government, the Iraqi government and governments of other concerned countries - with professionals trained in alternative dispute resolution, mediation, truth and reconciliation. We would call upon those who have worked in community building successfully around the world.

We asked Louise Diamond, founder of The Peace Company, and co-founder with Ambassador John McDonald of the Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy, if she were part of a peace team right now what would be possible?

Louise responded: “Our approach to peace building is threefold:

* Social – working with the hearts and minds and direct experience of the people;

* Political – working with politicians and leaders; and

* Structural – working with institutions in society that affect lives, i.e. education, economics, military."

She also indicated: We would look at needs and programs in Iraq, in this country and in partner countries and facilitate understanding and agreement on a peaceful direction. These discussions would be based on the premise that the cornerstone of freedom is the opportunity for all voices to be heard and for all people to have the opportunity to make a difference. Through dialogue and with the willingness of leadership to hear the voices of the people to create respectful and open-ended dialogue, we would resolve conflict.

President Bush recently called for a conflict response team in our government. We encourage that dialogue. Our troops need our support. Let us quickly move in the direction of providing them with training in de-escalation of conflict, nonviolent communication, how to effectively manage potentially violent situations, and more!

In the documentary "Gunner Palace", the closing scenes are of interviews with U.S. soldiers in Iraq commenting on how killing has not proven to be an effective solution in the past and that it is no different today.

It is time for all of us, individually and as a group, to speak up in conscience as part of the new politics of hope. It is time to focus on creating a world that will work for everyone.

Thank you Cindy Sheehan for your willingness to demonstrate how one person can make a significant difference on behalf of the common good. We are grateful to be part of the dialogue. Please support the much-needed Department of Peace!

Die GRÜNEN vertreten in der Frage der Handymaststeuer in NÖ eine ablehnende Haltung.

Als persönlich durch eine Mobilfunkanlage in nächster Nachbarschaft Betroffener (allerdings in OÖ) verstehe ich diese Haltung nicht. Auch habe ich heute in der Zeitung eine Berechnung der GRÜNEN über zu erwartende Mehrkosten einer Familie mit 3 Kindern gelesen.

Warum wird durch Sie oder Ihre Partei nicht der gesundheitliche Aspekt, welcher dankenswerterweise zuletzt durch die Wiener Ärztekammer an die Öffentlichkeit getragen wurde, in diese Diskussion eingebracht? Ich bin überzeugt, wenn diese der Berechnung zugrunde liegende Familie sich an die Empfehlungen der W. Ärztekammer halten würde, trotz der höheren Tarife durch die Mastensteuer deutlich geringere Telefonkosten haben würde.

Ich würde mir wünschen, dass die GRÜNEN diese Zusammenhänge kommunizieren würden und nicht durch andere Strategien ihre Glaubwürdigkeit aufs Spiel setzen würden.

She is the mother of Casey Sheehan, a young soldier who was killed in Iraq. She had met President Bush a year ago when he offered his sympathy to her then. She was gracious to him and thanked him for his kindness.

She is no longer gracious.

Cindy Sheehan is a mom who is angry at her President, the war in Iraq and anyone who tries to silence her. It is refreshing to see that kind of passion in a parent who loved her son. The only problem with all this is that she is out of place here....

She claims she has a right to see the President of the United States and discuss this personally with him. She is wrong. She has the right to TRY and meet the President. But, sorry Cindy, only the best get to be Starkist.

If President Bush meanders out to the road and hears her out, he will be setting a dangerous precedent. He will also be stupid. He says yes to Cindy Sheehan and guess how many new moms and dads are going to show up tomorrow? To paraphrase Lay's Potato Chips, "You can't MEET just one!" Keep clearing brush, Mr. President, or you will be hounded forever.

I think people forget that wherever the President goes, THAT becomes the White House. Camp David was the White House for Eisenhower. Palm Beach was the White House for Kennedy. San Clemente was the White House for Nixon and so on and so forth. So, if you go to Washington D.C. and hang out hoping to have the President of the United States come visit you...it isn't going to happen. It is the same in Crawford, Texas. This IS the freakin' President! We are just talking geography here, Cindy. Don't take it personally. You had your meeting last year. You got one more meeting that 280 million Americans did. Be content with that.

Furthermore, the liberal media and the anti-war in Iraq proponents are loving this! Underdog mom getting jilted by her President...the arrogant George Bush. The man who is afraid to answer for his actions for leading us into a terrible war without any good reasons behind it. Which is worse? A President who has misled us, a media who is trying to make money off it or opponents who are using it for their own agenda? Is anyone pure here?

The standoff continues. Maybe the President's staff will figure out a way to lance the growing boil. As their leader glides by in his limo, maybe it can stop for a nano second and he can hand her a tiny American flag with a chocolate bar and say, "I am sorry, Cin. I care about Casey, too." It isn't much, but it IS something.

I just read that her relatives have now responded in support of President Bush against her. Before we know it, we might have a second war on our hands. Withdrawing Cindy might be as big a problem for the President as the troops in Iraq.

Tammara Rosenleaf of Belton, Texas arrived in Crawford on Tuesday, August 9th. [The Flower Of Belton And The Rose Of Saline, as the old song goes.] Tammara's husband serves in the Army, stationed at Ft. Hood, and will be deploying to Iraq this fall.

Celeste, Dante and Raphael Zappala of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Celeste and her son Dante arrived in Crawford on Tuesday August 9; son Raphael will arrive Friday night August 12. Celeste's son Sgt. Sherwood Baker (Dante and Raphael's brother) was the first Pennsylvania National Guardsman to die in combat since World War II. He was killed in action in Baghdad on April 26, 2004 while searching for non-existent WMD's. Celeste is a co-founder of Gold Star Families for Peace.

Lietta Ruger of Bay Center, Washington will be arriving in Crawford Wednesday morning, August 10th. Lietta's son-in-law and nephew serve in the 1st Armored Division of the U.S. Army and are currently in Germany. They have both served extended 15-month tours of duty in Iraq; they are both under stop-loss orders and due to re-deploy to Iraq this fall.

Linda and Phil Waste of Hinesville, Georgia will arrive in Crawford Wednesday morning August 10th. Linda and Phil have 3 sons and 2 grandchildren (a grandson and a granddaughter) who are active-duty military. Together, they have already spent a total of over 57 months on tours of duty in Iraq.

Several of these children/grandchildren are currently serving in Iraq, and have served extended and multiple deployments.

Jean Prewitt of Birmingham, Alabama will arrive in Crawford on Wednesday morning, August 10th. Jean's son Private Kelly Prewitt was killed in action during the first few weeks of the war in Iraq, on April 6, 2003.

Valarie Fletcher of Seymour, Missouri is driving to Crawford and arriving Wednesday evening, August 10. Valarie's son serves in the Marines and will be deploying to Iraq at the end of this month.

Sherry Bohlen of Scottsdale, Arizona is driving to Crawford and arriving on Wednesday evening, August 10. Sherry's son serves in the Army and deployed to Iraq on June 10, 2005.

Rebecca Bahr of Scottsdale, Arizona is driving to Crawford and arriving on Wednesday evening August 10. Rebecca's daughter serves in the Marines and is currently stateside.

Kristin Williams and Matthew Williams of Dallas, Texas will be arriving in Crawford this weekend (August 13-14). Matthew Williams is an Iraq War Veteran who served as a combat medic for one year in Iraq (2003-2004). He was honorably discharged from the Army. Kristin is his sister.

It's so great to be here.

Last year when you guys had your convention in Boston, my son had only been dead a few months, and we were really honored because the Santa Barbara chapter took my daughter's poem "A Nation Rocked to Sleep" (and they did it again this year), and I remember Michael Cervantes, he brought the booklet over to our house and showed it to us, and I never dreamed in a year I'd be standing here in front of you as one of the speakers at your convention. I never dreamed I'd be doing this at all, but isn't it weird what life hands you.

I never heard about Veterans For Peace until, I can tell you the exact day I heard about VFP, it was May 4th, 2004, and my son had been dead exactly a month, and I was watching CNN, and something came on - it was a report on Arlington West (note: Arlington West was a display of crosses put up to remind people of the cost of the war) in Santa Barbara, and we lived about 6 hours north of Santa Barbara, and it was the May 4th before Mother's Day, which was May 8th, and VFP was going to put it up on Sunday, every Sunday - so I called my husband and I said, "There's only one place I want to be on Mother's Day this year, I want to be at Santa Barbara. I want to go and see Arlington West."

When we went, the first time we went, there were a little over 700 crosses. Now there are over 1,800 crosses.

And I'm glad to hear everybody else's words, because somebody's gotta stop those lying bastards. Somebody has to stop them.

I got an email yesterday - if you guys heard, I just had a story published called "Where Do I Live?" - it talks about an Iranian-American who got the shaft because a recruiter liked him, and the recruiter falsified his paperwork, so he ended up in prison.

He's been in prison since November without due process.

Another mother whose son was found dead in Iraq, they told her that he died from a drug overdose. Three months later, they got the toxicology report: no drugs. She was devastated. She said, "I know my son, he did not do drugs." She was told that her son's wife and his battle buddies said in a report that yes, her son abused drugs in Iraq. But when she got that report it said categorically that no, he did not abuse drugs. So how did her son die?

And then there's Kevin and Monica Benderman. Kevin did exactly the right thing and got 15 months in prison. Whereas, like Dahr [Jamail] said, the war criminals in Washington DC, they don't even lose a night's sleep.

Then we have this lying bastard, George Bush, taking a 5-week vacation in a time of war. You know what? I'm never going to get to enjoy another vacation, because of him.

My vacation probably ... this is really sad because I have a really cute dress I was going to wear to the banquet tomorrow night, but I'm either gonna be in jail or in a tent in Crawford, waiting until that jerk comes out and tells me why my son died.

Anyway, I got an email, I kinda got off track, a man emailed me yesterday, I get contacted by all kinds of people with their stories, and he said Cindy, I read everything you write, I read it on LewRockwell.com, he said, "I get tears in my eyes, but today I cried real tears, and I screamed, because my dear sweet nineteen ear-old cousin was killed in Iraq."

And he said, "Cindy, why didn't I save him? Why didn't I knock him out, why didn't I take him to Canada?" and I wrote him back and I said, "You know what? We all think that."

I said to my son not to go. I said, you know it's wrong, you know you're going over there. You know your unit might have to kill innocent people, you know you might die. And he says, "My buddies are going, I have to go." He said, "If I don't go, someone's going to have to do my job, and my buddies will be in danger."

So what really gets me is these chicken-hawks who sent our kids to die, without ever serving in a war themselves. They don't know what it's all about.

Thirty of our bravest young men have already died this month, and it's only the 5th of August. And the tragedy of the marines in Ohio is awful.

But do you guys remember back in March when we were having our 2nd year anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, which was pre-empted by Terry Schiavo, so that's all that was on the news, not 5,000 of us in Fayetteville. Wolf Blitzer said it was insignificant, but they put Terry Schiavo on, and I wrote something then called "The Amazing Hypocrites" and I asked, why does she deserve life more than my son, and the Iraqi people? And more than the other people that this war has killed.

But do you think George Bush will interrupt his vacation and go visit the families of those 20 marines who have died in Ohio this week? No, because he doesn't care, he doesn't have a heart. That's not enough to stop his little "playing cowboy" game in Crawford for 5 weeks.

So, as you can imagine, the grieving parents who lost - lost, I don't like to use that word - whose child was murdered, it's extremely difficult, you can't even get a small scab on our wound, because every day it rips open. Every day, I don't know why I do it because I already know that war is ugly, I already know that war is hard. But I open up the DOD site to see who became an angel while I was sleeping.

And that rips my heart open, because I know there is another mother whose life is going to be ruined that day. So we can't even begin to heal.

So anyway that filth-spewer and warmonger George Bush was speaking after the tragedy of the marines in Ohio, he said a couple things that outraged me.

Seriously outraged me.

And I know I don't look like I'm outraged, I'm always so calm and everything, that's because if I started hitting something, I wouldn't stop 'til it was dead. So I can't even start, cause I know how dangerous that would be, but George Bush was talking, and he never mentioned the terrible incident of those marines, but he did say that the families of the ones who have been killed can rest assured that their loved ones died for a noble cause.

And he also said, he says this often, and this really drives me crazy, he said that we have to stay in Iraq and complete the mission, to honor the sacrifices of the ones who have fallen.

And I say, why should I want one more mother to go through what I've gone through, because my son is dead. You know what, the only way he can honor my son's sacrifice is to bring the rest of the troops home. To make my son's death count for peace and love, and not war and hatred like he stands for.

I don't want him using my son's death or my family's sacrifice to continue the killing. I don't want him to exploit the honor of my son and others to continue the killing. They sent these honorable people to die, and are so dishonorable themselves.

So, as many of you have heard, and I didn't mean to cause any problems with the convention, but I was writing an email to everybody, and I was so mad, like I said, and I just had this brainstorm, I'm going to Dallas, I don't know where Crawford is. I've been in Texas, Casey was stationed at Fort Hood. I drove from northern California to Fort Hood one time - it took, like, 30 hours. And I thought, I could be driving for days to get from Dallas to Crawford!

But I don't care, I'm goin'. And I'm gonna tell them, "You get that evil maniac out here, cuz a Gold Star Mother, somebody whose blood is on his hands, has some questions for him."

And I'm gonna say, "OK, listen here, George. #1, you quit, and I demand - every time you get out there and say you're going to continue the killing in Iraq to honor the fallen heroes by continuing the mission - you say, except Casey Sheehan.'"

"And you say, except for all the members of 'Gold Star Families for Peace' cuz we think not one drop of blood should be spilled in our families' names. You quit doing that. You don't have my permission."

And I'm gonna say, "And you tell me what the noble cause is that my son died for." And if he even starts to say "freedom and democracy," I'm gonna say "bullshit."

You tell me the truth. You tell me that my son died for oil. You tell me that my son died to make your friends rich. You tell me my son died to spread the cancer of Pax Americana, imperialism in the Middle East. You tell me that, you don't tell me my son died for freedom and democracy.

Cuz, we're not freer. You're taking away our freedoms. The Iraqi people aren't freer, they're much worse off than before you meddled in their country.

You get America out of Iraq, you get Israel out of Palestine.

And if you think I won't say "bullshit" to the President, I say move on, cuz I'll say what's on my mind.

So, what's gonna happen? I started this, I thought it was gonna be just me and my sister driving to Crawford, but it kind of mushroomed and people from as far away as Dayton, Ohio are coming, to help us, to stand behind us, because I travel all over the country, I speak, I write, I get feedback on my writing, and just in the little over a year that I've been doing this, I've seen a major turnaround in this country.

People don't just want to hear it - they want to know, what can we do?

What can we do to get him out of power? And I'm gonna say the "I" word. Impeach. And we have to have everybody impeached that lied to the American public, and that's the executive branch, and any people in congress, and we gotta go all the way down and we might have to go all the way down to the person who picks up the dog shit in Washington because ...

We can't let somebody rise to the top who will pardon these war criminals. Because they need to go to prison for what they've done in this world. We can't have a pardon. They need to pay for what they've done.

So anyway, I'm gonna go to Crawford tomorrow, and I'm gonna say I want to talk to him, and they say he's not coming out, I'm gonna set up my tent there until he comes out to talk to me.

And I have the whole month of August off, just like him. It's just the way it worked out, I was supposed to go to England tomorrow to do some Downing Street things, but Conyers cancelled, so hey, I have a lot of free time on my hands, and I'm gonna stay until he comes out and talks to me. And if he quits his vacation and goes to DC, I'll pull my tent up, I'll go to DC and put it on the White House lawn, and I'll be waiting for you guys when you get there September 24th.

Another thing that I'm doing is - my son was killed in 2004, so I'm not paying my taxes for 2004. If I get a letter from the IRS, I'm gonna say, you know what, this war is illegal; this is why this war is illegal. This war is immoral; this is why this war is immoral. You killed my son for this. I don't owe you anything. And if I live to be a million, I won't owe you a penny.

And I want them to come after me, because unlike what you've been doing with the war resistance, I want to put this frickin' war on trial. And I want to say, "You give me my son, and I'll pay your taxes."

I live in Vacaville, come and get me if you can find me there and put me on trial, because like Camilo (Mejia) - Camilo knew what was right. And he went to prison for that. And Henry David Thoreau, he went to prison, he refused to pay his poll tax, and Emerson - I call them HT and RW - and RW came to visit HT and said, what are you doing here, buddy? And HT said, why aren't you here? This is the only place for a moral person in an immoral world.

It's up to us, the people, to break immoral laws and resist. As soon as the leaders of a country lie to you, they have no authority over you. These maniacs have no authority over us. And they might be able to put our bodies in prison, but they can't put our spirits in prison. And I know that Camilo came out a much stronger person, he's one of my heroes, it's great a row of heroes in front of me here.

And everyone gave such great testimony this evening, I have to wonder, why do we keep doing this to each other? Why do we let this continue time and time again, why do we let it happen? And it's because our country is so good at demonizing people. I still have relatives from WWII that still call Japanese people "Japs." And we demonize the Iraqi people, where most of this country doesn't even think we're killing innocent people.

Because, "Oh Cindy, don't you remember what happened on September 11th?"

"Yeah, but, were any of those people in Iraq? And the people who flew those planes into the Trade Center, where they from Iraq?"

When I was growing up, it was "Communists." Now it's "Terrorists." So you always have to have somebody to fight and be afraid of, so the war machine can build more bombs, guns, and bullets and everything.

But I do see hope. I see hope in this country. 58% of the American public are with us. We're preaching to the choir, but the choir's not singing. If all of the 58% started singing, this war would end.

I got an email the other day and it said, "Cindy, if you didn't use so much profanity ... there's people 'on the fence' that get offended."

And you know what I said? "You know what? You know what, god damn it? How, in the world is anybody still sitting on that fence'?"

"If you fall on the side that is pro-George and pro-war, you get your ass over to Iraq, and take the place of somebody who wants to come home. And if you fall on the side that is against this war and against George Bush, stand up and speak out."

But whatever side you fall on, quit being on the fence.

The opposite of good is not evil, it's apathy. And we have to get this country off their butts, and we have to get the choir singing.

We need to say, bring our troops home now.

We can't depend on the people in charge bringing our troops home.

Because you don't plan on bringing the troops home when you drop so much of the reconstruction money into building permanent bases.

I was hoping to come to the banquet tomorrow night, but unless George comes out and talks to me, I'll be camping at Crawford.

The Peaceful Occupation of Crawford (Day 5) -- a message from Cindy Sheehan, Crawford, TX Today started at 4am when the rain started blowing into my tent and my head and my feet started getting soaked then thunder and lightening came over my tent. I was really frightened for my life, so I abandoned ship and went into Crawford. By the time we made our way through the floods and got into Crawford, I had a fever, sore throat, and bad headache. So I was made to rest and not have any interviews until noon.

We had a little bit of trouble with locals today. We are beginning to feel a little unwelcome here. One lady almost ran over a television crew. She screamed at us that the neighbors are really mad ...so we moved down the road to our closest neighbor who is very sweet. Her husband is a medic who just got home from Iraq. Again, I did tons of interviews. It looks like I will be on the cover of People Magazine. Time Magazine, Vanity Fair and Oprah's magazine will be interviewing me also. It was great having the other GSFP and MFSO there to help me with interviews and greeting all of the hundreds of people who came out from all over the country to be with us today. We were hassled by the Sheriff because there were too many cars out there. Our little Bush Town has grown to full capacity. The town Sheriff said we can put up tents and RV's in the town stadium. There are wall to wall sleeping bags here at the Peace House.

Due to the generosity of you all, the Crawford Peace House has received over 30,000 dollars and GSFP has received a lot of donations too. I got about 2 and a half dozen bouquets of flowers from so many people who are moved by this stand. I am so amazed and overwhelmed by the support and love we are getting from everywhere. As for Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Michelle Malkin, Matt Drudge, etc...nothing you can say can hurt me or make me stop what we are doing. We are working for peace with justice. We are using peaceful means and the truth to do it. I guess the truth frightens people. It frightens them so much, they have to resort to telling lies to rebut my arguments. They are despicable human beings and not even worth our concern. Bill O'Reilly had the nerve to invite me on his show again today. But, Dolores Kesterson, another Gold Star Families for Peace member who also had a terrible experience with meeting George and she kicked his b... Tonight we are still on arrest alert...so we shall see. Peace soon.

Stoiber spielt wilde Sau

Zu Äußerungen des bayerischen Ministerpräsidenten Edmund Stoiber, nach denen der Osten nicht die Bundestagswahl entscheiden dürfte und nicht alle Bevölkerungsteile so klug wählten wie die Bayern erklärt Bundeswahlkampfleiter Bodo Ramelow:

Edmund Stoiber spielt wilde Sau und versucht, im Westen Aversionen gegen den Osten zu schüren, um damit auf Wählerfang zu gehen. Stoiber macht die Union zur Spalter-Partei. Wenn sich der Osten nicht botmäßig verhält, wird er abgestraft. Der bayerische Ministerpräsident hat offenkundig seine Traumatisierung durch die Niederlage bei der Bundestagswahl 2002 nicht überwunden und fühlt sich durch die Ostdeutschen betrogen. Für ihn existiert die DDR immer noch, der ganze Osten ist für Stoiber feindliches Gebiet. Die Union hat den Osten abgeschrieben: programmatisch, politisch, menschlich, moralisch. Es ist schon ein besonderes Bubenstück, dass Stoiber nun den Ostdeutschen auch noch die demokratische Urteilsfähigkeit abspricht und ihre Wählerstimmen praktisch zu Stimmen zweiter Klasse macht. Und die Kanzlerkandidatin aus dem Osten schweigt dazu, als ob sie dieser Amoklauf gegen die innere Einheit nichts anginge. Edmund Stoiber und die Union werden am 18. September ihre Quittung bekommen.

The Long Emergency: Surviving the Converging Catastrophes of the Twenty-First Century. James Howard Kunstler. x + 307 pp. Atlantic Monthly Press, 2005. $23.

James Howard Kunstler begins The Long Emergency with the hope that "the American public will wake up from its sleepwalk and act to defend the project of civilization" while there is still time. "Throughout this book," he writes, "I will concern myself with what I believe is happening, what will happen, or what is likely to happen, not what I hope or wish will happen." The reality that our society is currently refusing to face, Kunstler says, is that time is just about up for industrial civilization as we have known it.

Kunstler's thesis is straightforward: Malthus was right, but cheap oil has postponed the day of reckoning, creating a century-long "artificial bubble of plenitude" and generating a host of intractable problems partly or entirely related to our prolonged energy spending spree. These problems include serious damage to our agricultural infrastructure, global climate change and the reorganization of living places into unsustainable suburbs and cities. Now cheap oil is disappearing fast, leaving only the problems behind.

What sets The Long Emergency apart from numerous other books on this theme is its comprehensive sweep—its powerful integration of science, technology, economics, finance, international politics and social change—along with a fascinating attempt to peer into a chaotic future. And Kunstler is such a compelling, fast-paced and sometimes eloquent writer that the book is hard to put down. Beginning with the story of Edwin L. Drake, who drilled the world's first oil well in northwestern Pennsylvania in August 1859, Kunstler takes us through the development of the global oil-based economy of the 20th and early 21st centuries. He carefully traces the origins of the idea, first proposed by geologist M. King Hubbert, that oil consumption by modern industrial society will draw down current and potential supplies in a predictable way. Hubbert's 1956 prediction of the date of "peak oil" production in the United States (which he put at sometime between 1966 and 1972) was strikingly accurate—the peak occurred in 1970. After Hubbert's death in 1989, the distinguished petroleum geologists Colin Campbell and Jean Laherrère, Princeton geologist Kenneth Deffeyes, University of Colorado physicist Albert Bartlett and others adapted his model and applied it to global oil production, yielding a prediction that the global peak would occur between 2000 and 2010. As pointed out by Richard A. Kerr and Robert F. Service in the July 1, 2005, issue of Science, petroleum geologists tend to accept this "pessimistic" prediction of the date when the global peak will be (or has been) reached, whereas "optimistic" dates farther in the future are being advanced primarily by resource economists. Kunstler sides with the geologists, and his fast-paced but detailed discussion of the economics of oil supports this position.

In his chapter "Geopolitics and the Global Oil Peak," he comes to grips with a complex mix of elements: Middle Eastern and Islamic nationalism, terrorism, Chinese industrial growth and the overwhelming problems of Russia, the world's second-largest producer of oil. These are set against a backdrop of diminishing supply, as one country after another, including Saudi Arabia, passes its oil peak. Kunstler's explanations of why the Saudis can no longer control world oil prices (they lack the reserves to increase production much beyond what they are already pumping) and of the immense significance of that loss of control are particularly insightful.

American politicians have not yet grasped this new reality. The book's lengthy discussion of the alternatives to cheap oil that are so beloved by techno-optimists is straightforward and sobering. Kunstler gives all of the alternatives a critical but fair inquiry, from conventional energy sources such as coal and natural gas, through oil shales and tar sands, synthetic oil, renewable energy (including wind, solar and hydroelectric power and biomass), nuclear fission and nuclear fusion, hydrogen, thermal depolymerization
(turning organic waste into oil), methane hydrates and even zero-point energy. Most of these technologies founder on "the classic problem of energy economics: energy returned over energy invested (ERoEI). "The figure in the case of tar sands and oil shale is approximately three barrels of oil produced for every two barrels of oil-equivalent invested. In the case of ethanol produced from agribusiness corn or sugar cane, the ratio may be less than one. Some alternatives, such as methane hydrates, are dangerous to handle. Hydrogen is not a primary fuel: Its production requires considerable energy. Also, because of the low density of hydrogen gas, it must be stored and transported under high compression, or liquefied at very low temperatures, or combined with other compounds. Each of these options costs still more energy, and they introduce an assortment of complications and hazards into the delivery system.

Although hydrogen will have its uses, Kunstler says, his verdict is unequivocal: "There is not going to be a 'hydrogen economy.'" Nor is he sanguine about such far-out schemes as a process for deriving zero-point energy from the dark matter of the universe; he reminds us that "A useful maxim in engineering states that when something sounds too good to be true, it generally is not true." Kunstler's moderate treatment of nuclear power (fission) has angered some environmentalists. I think he makes a good case, however, that during the transition period to a post-petroleum economy, the United States, which produces much of its electricity from a rapidly declining supply of natural gas, will not be as well off as France, which gets 80 percent of its electric power from nuclear energy. Nevertheless, he does not see nuclear power as more than a short-term stopgap.

Its ultimate limitations come first from safety issues with regard to plant operations and the disposal of waste fuel (although he points out that coal has cost far more lives than nuclear power, especially in the West). Second is the large amount of oil needed to mine and process nuclear fuel and to build and maintain nuclear plants. And the third, formidable objection Kunstler makes is that "Atomic fission is useful for producing electricity, but most of America's energy needs are for things that electricity can't do very well, if at all. For instance, you can't fly airplanes on electric power from nuclear reactors"—although, as he notes, the U.S. military has tried. Kunstler describes a host of natural disasters that will interact with the energy crisis to cause social upheaval on a global scale. No country will be exempt, he says. Some of these disasters, such as climate change, are the direct result of our profligate use of cheap energy.

Others, including the widespread shortage of fresh water, have been greatly augmented by the drain on resources brought about by the explosion of high-oil-input agriculture, industrialization and changes in living habits. All of those natural disasters, however, including the emergence of new infectious diseases and the re-emergence of old ones, will be much harder to cope with when cheap energy is no longer available. Our efforts will also be confounded by diminishing returns on technology and by "technological regress—the loss of information, ability, and confidence." The Long Emergency is more than a list of disasters, present or impending. It is an attempt to understand how we got to where we are. Nearly 100 years of cheap oil have allowed us, even prompted us, to construct an economic and social system that depends utterly (often without our knowledge) on a continuous, never-failing energy subsidy.

The system cannot stand on its own feet. It is unstable, lacking internal restraints and negative feedbacks, and most of all it undermines all stabilizing alternatives, such as diverse small businesses and local community support systems. Kunstler's understanding of history and economics helps him delineate this clearly. My only complaint about the book is that it lacks an index, which is inexcusable for a text so crammed with names and facts. Kunstler's use of entropy as a synonym for social disorder may bother readers who prefer that the term be reserved for discussions of thermodynamics, but an accepted definition of the word is "inevitable and steady deterioration of a system or society." One question that most readers of this review will ask is, When will the coming collapse occur?

As Kunstler notes, Deffeyes—perhaps not entirely in jest—has predicted on National Public Radio that the global oil peak will occur on Thanksgiving Day, 2005, with "'an uncertainty factor of only three or four weeks on either side.'" But the closest thing to a hint of Kunstler's position on the subject is found in his remark in the last chapter that "The denizens of Bergen County, New Jersey, or Fairfield County, Connecticut, today may never believe how desperate their localities may become in 2025." He is probably wise to be vague.

As the great biochemist Erwin Chargaff remarked in his 1978 autobiography, Heraclitean Fire, "On the whole, professional pessimists prove right at the end if one does not hold them too tightly to a time scale." The last (and longest) chapter of The Long Emergency is also the most innovative and controversial one. Having made a powerful case that it is too late to avoid serious trauma, Kunstler speculates on what life will be like during the painful transition period, as cheap petroleum wanes. The question is well worth asking, if only to stimulate creative thinking about alternatives to a high-energy lifestyle. The book is not a survivalist tract, but Kunstler argues persuasively that life will be better in some geographic regions of the country than in others and better in some kinds of communities than in others. Factors such as the availability of water, the degree of dependence on automobiles and air-conditioning, the regional tolerance for violence and the persistence of strong communities lead him to conclude that the states of New England, the mid-Atlantic, and the upper Midwest that make up the "Old Union" of the Civil War period, along with the Pacific Northwest, will fare much better than the Southwest, the Rocky Mountain states and the Southeast. Within each region, however, conditions will not be uniform.

Kunstler, whose earlier book The Geography of Nowhere established him as heir presumptive to the intellectual legacy of Lewis Mumford, describes America's automobile-dependent suburbs as "the greatest misallocation of resources in the history of the world." It is the suburbs, he thinks, that will suffer the most during the coming energy crisis. (I concur, having taught the same message in field courses in suburban New Jersey for 30 years.) And cities, with their skyscrapers and total food dependence, will not, Kunstler claims, be far behind the suburbs in misery. There is much more in the final chapter than I can do justice to in a review: The many topics discussed include, among others, the new economy and new commerce that will accompany the end of oil-dependent consumer culture (he predicts the demise of the chain stores and the rise of scavenging), possible political fragmentation of the nation, changes in education, the end of romantic childhood and changes in race relations.

The picture he paints is incomplete—he doesn't say what will happen to health care, the arts or entertainment in the long emergency—but there is material enough to provoke scientists and laypeople alike into considering what lies ahead. Kunstler, like George Orwell, understands that being honest about the past and present is the only way to prepare ourselves for an uncertain future. Civilization, he believes, will survive the end of cheap oil, but not without great loss. "How many ... familiar things in time may go?" he wonders. "What will abide in our collective memory?" Not all readers will accept his answers to these questions, but I think we must be grateful to him for showing us the need to ask them. Also you can get problems with low frequency because of the shielding. And shielding reduces the intensity, but not the structure (frequency/cies, pulsation, modulation etc.) of the radiation.

Generally, I think shielding is never successful as it should be, it is only an additive help (e.g. shielding clothes) like using pills like Gaba(pentine) is, to reduce exposure more or less. Even Charles Claessens moved from Rotterdam to Belgium, because shielding had its limits. There are complications (psychologically (always remembering you are in a cage), missing natural background waves, the situation directly outside the cage is worse, on the street, in town, at the job etc. it is still hundreds to thousands of mikroWatt/m2, the earth to which connected may be not clean from frequencies, it is expensive, etc.).

So, should we move? But where? The goal of 3G is to cover 99,9 % of the population.

It is sad that we have to argue technical data while the disaster is the damage to our bodies and minds, that there is no normal life anymore, as if we are environmental refugees and the war around us is still going and growing.

And my 1 pence worth!

I looked into enclosure rather than shielding and came to the conclusion that it has to be total, because if you let some radiation in it can't get out, but will bounce around inside. None of us is going to achieve a total F cage, so there may be risk in getting almost there. And yes, cutting natural radiation frequencies is bad too. Add to that the effect on small air ions of having grounded walls, and we could be asking for trouble that way.

Creating radiation shadows is an improvement and is feasible at more reasonable cost, and sleeping in a microwave bed-canopy is a good 7-hour protection.

Finally, in my research on oxidation stress and the role of superoxide and nitric oxide in the body as potentially affected by EMF (studies have demonstrated this) I also find that this is affected by other stress. If living in a cage gives you peace of mind, that's fine, but for others it will feel like being a prisoner, and itself be a constant reminder of danger, which is stressful and could end up generating the very problems it is designed to alleviate.

EMF gene damage is caused by free radicals. All these genes are induced by free radicals, EMF included. Now it depends what damage has been observed in this very gene (A00564), and what is residual activity left if any. Nitric Oxide and Symptoms

For those who read Andy's files on Nitric Oxide and radiation, this can add more data to the picture.

I noticed the interest and knowledge of Andy (Mast Sanity, TETRAWATCH.NET) on Nitric Oxide and the link to EMR radiation effects:I think it would be interesting for him and others to know about a short but interesting paragraph published in Town Send Letter for Doctors & Patients (August/September 2005). It speaks about how nitric oxide leads to multiple chemical sensitivity, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and post traumatic stress disorder. Martin L. Pall (School of molecular biosciences, Washington State university, Pullman, Washington) believes that an elevated nitric oxide/ peroxynitrite mechanism underlies these conditions, he says that the evidence shows that short term stress and chemical exposure increases nitric oxide levels in the body. It is an inflammatory response, incited by inflammatory cytokines.

NO reacts with superoxide to form peroxynitrite, a potent oxidant. Peroxynitrite is known to deplete ATP, producing fatigue. It also increases permeability of the Blood brain barrier. NO contributes to the loss of more than one porphyrin biosynthetic enzyme, a condition common among people with MSC. In classical porphyria, only one enzyme in the pathway is low. NO also inhibits cytochrome p450 metabolism, which breaks down hydrophobic molecules such as organic solvents and pesticides implicated in MSC. According to Pall's theory, the chronic nature of MSC and similar conditions results because peroxynitrite can continue to profuce more of its precursors NO and superoxide (and therefore, itself) via six different feedback loop mechanisms. In the case of MSC, an elevated nitric oxide/ peroxynitrite theory correlates with the neural sensitization theory, proposed by Bell et al (1992, 1996, 1998, 1999). In this theory, chemical sensitivity results from long-term potentiation, which involves stimulation of the N-mthyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. Several research groups have reported that excessive NMDA stimulation produces increases in nitric oxide and its oxidant product peroxynitrite. Pall suggests that the initial chemical exposure stimulates NMDA activity in the CNS/ brain limbic system, causing increases in nitric oxide and peroxynitrite. Nitric Oxide acts as a messanger that tells the body to release neurotransmitters, including glutamate, which further stimulates NMDA receptors. Peroxynitrite increases the receptor's sensitivity to stimulation. "Nervous system dysfunction is common in MSC" Pall says, "and has been confirmed by SPECT and PET scans of brains of MSC patients as well as changes in EEG patterns." Excessive NMDA activity, leading to high levels of NO and peroxynitrite, has also been implicated in several neurodegenerative diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, AIDS-related dementia, stroke, epilepsy, Huntington's disease, and Alzheimer disease. Pall hopes that the nitric oxide/ peroxynitrite/NMDA hypothesis will provide a framework for further research. By testing predictions derived from the hypothesis, researchers may develop effective treatments. In the case of MSC, he suggests that antioxidants may help lower peroxynitrite levels. Vitamin B12, administered subcutaneously and in the form of hydroxocoblamin, scavenges unwanted nitric oxide. Other treatments could focus on lowering the activity of NMDA receptors and on improvong mitochondrial function and ATP production.

The Real ID Act's identity cards will be required not only if one wants to drive, but also if one seeks to visit a federal government building, collect Social Security, access a federal government service, or use the services of a private entity (such as a bank or an airline) that is required under federal law to verify customer identity. In other words, it will be well nigh impossible to live without such an ID. That creates not only a huge incentive for citizens and residents to procure IDs, but also a huge incentive for states to comply with this unfunded mandate: If they didn't, their citizens and residents wouldn't be able to get access to any of the services or benefits listed above. Estimates of the cost of compliance range from $80 to $100 million -- and states will have no choice but to pay.

The right to speak as you wish, to pray as you wish, to be secure in your home against warrantless searches or seizures, are all based on the same underlying right to be left alone by government. The right to privacy, in fact, animates the entire Constitution, Bill of Rights included. The drafters of those documents felt no need to state what in their minds was already so obvious. Furthermore, if the Bill of Rights did not include an express ban on laws that tried to tell couples how many children to have, there was a very good reason. Not even King George, tyrannical as he was, would have dared to infringe on something so private. If the American people eventually lose the right to privacy against an intrusive government, if that protection is eventually removed from us by a more aggressive Supreme Court, a door swings open to a whole variety of government acts...

Those were just about the last words that Gennaro Pellegrini, Jr. -- a 31-year-old Philly cop and up-and-coming boxer -- said to me last November. In less than 48 hours, Pellegrini was to step onto an airplane bound for Iraq, along with the rest of his Pennsylvania National Guard unit from Northeast Philadelphia. For anyone who's worried about the return of a military draft, Pellegrini was living proof that we already have one. He desperately did not want to serve in the Persian Gulf. He was just two weeks away from finishing up his six-year stint in the Guard when he was told that his tour of duty was being extended and that he would serve in Iraq for at least a year, maybe longer ... in the end, Pellegrini's stay in Iraq lasted little more than eight months. His parents have just been notified that he was killed on Tuesday by a roadside bomb...

Consider if one is looking for a needle in haystacks, and haystacks are passing through one's presence on an hourly basis. Would anyone grab a random handful of each haystack that passed by and expect to find said needle by examining in minute detail each piece of hay in that handful? Of course not. Yet most air travelers think an invasive search of a 45-year-old man traveling with his wife and kids, or running a rod down the skin-tight top between the breasts of a pretty 16-year-old blond girl with a tan and painted nails (all 20 of them -- I counted) makes them safer. I might join the march in the streets protesting this idiocy, but of course I'd be the only one on parade. My fellow citizens might even be provoked by my lack of support for our nation's hardworking security people...

Steuer bringt vorerst keine Entlastung

Die in Niederösterreich beschlossene Handymastensteuer dürfte übrigens vorerst nicht zum Gesundheitsschutz der Bevölkerung beitragen. Denn die Mobilfunkbetreiber reagieren nicht mit weniger Masten, sondern mit höheren Gebühren für das Telefonieren mit Handy.

Data for the cancer risk from mobile phone radiation are increasing: new catalogue of guidelines advises cautious contact with mobile phones.

Wien (OTS) - The Vienna Doctor’s Chamber (Wiener Ärztekammer) warns expressly against excessive mobile phone use especially by children. The reason for this is the recently presented “Reflex Study” (Reflex-Studie) in which a definite genotoxic effect of mobile phone radiation was seen. The first consequence is that the Doctor’s Chamber (Ärztekammer) has now drawn up a catalogue of guidelines, which stipulates specific rules of behaviour for use of mobile phones.

The Reflex Studie (Reflex Study), which was supported by the EU at a cost of more than two million Euros, was carried out at various important research centres in Europe, including the Wiener AKH. In the course of this study, the so-called mutagenicity of a substance, in this case in by electromagnetic field, was tested. They looked for changes in the genes which are the possible beginning of a cancer disease. One part of the study tests was carried out on human promyelocytes, a preliminary stage of the cells of blood formation. A mutation of such cells can as a further consequence lead to leukaemia and similar illnesses of the blood forming system.

The results from these studies can be summarised in one sentence: “There is indeed a genotoxic effect on human cell cultures from mobile phone radiation at a strength that is supplied by every GSM mobile phone.”

First studies confirmed

Previous earlier animal experiments already showed a dose-dependant genotoxic effect under high frequency radiation. Further, in the brains of rats increased functionless nerve cells were found after two hours of mobile phone radiation. Two corroborative epidemiological studies showed a three- to four-fold increased risk for auditory nerve cancers after ten years of mobile phone use.

With the now presented Reflex Study, a cell-biological relationship has been proven for all these results. Eric Huber, Speaker for Environmental Medicine for the Doctor’s Chamber for Vienna (Referent für Umweltmedizin der Ärztekammer für Wien): “If medications delivered the same test results as mobile phone radiation one would have to immediately remove them from the market”.

The Vienna Doctor’s Chamber (Wiener Ärztekammer) finds it necessary to call upon the population to take more care with use of mobile phone equipment, especially children. Huber: “We must assume that children are more sensitive towards high frequency radiation than adults since the skull bones are thinner and the children’s child-like cells show an increased rate of division, in which they are more sensitive to genotoxic effects”.

That is why they have decided to follow the example of the British Ministry of Health and the Danish Health Council, and to also warn against excessive mobile phone use, especially by children, in Austria.

The following guidelines for mobile phones should according to Huber, “Expressly not only be valid for children”.

* Children under 16 years should not use mobile phones.

*Only use mobile phones in emergencies and then only telephone briefly.

*A mobile phone in the trouser pocket and also the sending of SMS messages under the school desk can influence fertility and should be completely avoided.

*If sending SMS messages keep the mobile phone away from the body.

*Turn off the mobile phone at night ˆ if left turned on, do not keep it near the head.

*Also, headsets are not recommended, since the cable frequently transmits the signal like an antenna.

*Play no games on the mobile phone.

*Keep the mobile phone away from the head during the telephone connection.

*Keep a couple of metres distance away from other people, they are being radiated with you.

*Less mobile phone telephone calls mean less radiation from mobile phone masts.

* Internet via cable connections such as UMTS and WLAN lead to high radiation exposure.
