Is my cancer linked to forest of phone masts?

In the third instalment of her cancer diary, Fiona Green, 62, asks why she became sick.

THE four weeks of radiation treatment are over, the effects peak and I am still unable to eat and the pain is at its worst. This is because the treatment is cumulative. I hoped to have my appointment for complementary therapy massage come through by now. But no, they are booked until the summer. A “very long waiting list” is blamed. I was disappointed and that helps make it bearable. As my visitors come I put on a brave face for each of them, which is expected in our society. “Shut up and put up” or “grin and bear it” are British phrases from the world wars, and they still apply with a ferocity. That applies everywhere, except within the walls of the MacMillan Support Radiographer’s room. With Mark, I was able to grieve the loss of my hair, health, the recent death of a loved one and even to make light of the ghastly mask.

Next I had to address my shrinking funds and this is how serious illness gets you. It’s never just a case of ‘rest and get well’. Money has to be gained or the next thing severe debt follows. I queued along with more than 50 others at social services on a freezing February morning to see if I qualified for incapacity benefit (no), income support (no) and pension credit (maybe). People in the queue were marvellous – so bright and cheerful.

There was a young woman newly out of prison, another out of hospital and two with babies all making jokes about their terrible predicament. These people are the invisible thousands, stripped of their dignity, and waiting for meagre handouts from the heavy government purse. They are given impossibly small amounts to live on. In order to make sense of my illness, I looked around for reasons why I had contracted such a nasty cancer. I had been a heavy drinker and smoker when I was young and there is certainly evidence linking that with throat cancer, but The Evening Standard recently highlighted the issue of mobile phone masts in my area. There are 83 of them within a quarter of a mile of my home and the Middlesex Hospital.

I did some research on the internet and there is evidence to prove a link between these masts and lymphomas, which is the type of cancer I had contracted. How can these dangerous things be allowed to proliferate within a densely populated area like ours? The nearby primary school could be affected too. People protest when just one mast is planned for their town. Here we have more and more planning applications for them each week. Environmental health officers responded to the protests with the line: “There is no definite evidence of a connection.” How many people have to be made ill before something is done?

It would be easy to assess how many people from my area are on the hospital books for cancer if I could get access to such information. I have been quite positive throughout my treatment but when it stops I have been warned that depression can set in and that is when friends start to disappear.

I read that all the adrenaline that has kept me going throughout will subside too. To counter this I have set aside a day each week to paint. My new diet is filled with an abundance of fruit and vegetables and antitoxins and I actually enjoy food shopping for the first time in my life.

Gone is the weekly trawl to Tesco and instead I am skipping to the health shop. I have a juicer and an electric whisk to make wonderful drinks, and more time in the country air, away from the mobile phone masts.

I always feel upset when I deal with these, but I cried when I read Fiona Green's letter in the Article 'Is my cancer linked to forest of phone masts?'

I have designed a letter called 'The Voice of the People of the UK ' which lists all the injustices people tell me of on the Mast Sanity advice line week after week. It can be sent to government offices. I did so because no one in the UK seems to have any human rights, or any way to air grievances, concerns, or fears, about these masts.

After reading that article today, though, I feel that my letter alone is not enough, so I will do more, and encourage others to do more, to end the outrageous injustice that this government and mobile phone companies inflict on us all.

There is peer reviewed evidence that this microwave radiation causes harm to human and animal life (and there has been since the 70's), but it has been, and is still, ignored by those whom we elected into Parliament to serve us and our country.

The reason is very simple. Profits and tax revenues comes before the health and well-being of humans, animal life, and our environment. We are callously treated as guinea pigs for this new technology, even though those responsible know that the older phone mast technology can cause cancer long term.

Mast Sanity is issuing health survey forms to areas where there are 3G and TETRA masts and, less frequently, to areas of long term exisiting 2G masts. It has been noted that TETRA ill health effects are instant with some people, but 3G is not far behind.

Yet Government dictates that health should not be a planning consideration and gives free rein to mast companies to put up phone masts anywhere despite the reiterated recommendations of Sir William Stewart in his report of January 2005 for the NRPB!

I will do more, enough is enough

vermutlich wissen Sie bereits, was zurzeit auf dem Eis vor der Ostküste Kanadas passiert: Mehrere hunderttausend Robbenbabys ab einem Alter von 12 Tagen werden dort mit Knüppeln und Gewehren getötet.

Während ich Ihnen diese Nachricht schreibe, fallen Jäger mit Holzknüppeln, Gewehren und Hakapiks (Robbenhaken) in dieses wunderschöne Naturgebiet ein. Die noch etwas unbeholfenen und langsamen Robbenbabys haben keine Chance zu entkommen.

Die Jäger schlagen jeder Robbe einmal auf den Kopf und drehen sie dann um, um das Fell mit einem Messer abzuziehen. Oft spüren die Tiere den Einstich des Messers und versuchen, sich zu wehren. Dann werden sie wieder auf den Bauch gedreht und durch weitere Schläge auf den Kopf getötet.

Ich möchte Sie kurz über die aktuelle Lage bei der diesjährigen Jagd informieren und Ihnen mitteilen, welche Schritte der IFAW geplant hat, um diese grausame und sinnlose Jagd zu stoppen.

Warum werden zwei Wochen alte Robbenbabys in Kanada gejagt?

Ganz einfach: Wegen des Geldes. Weil einige mit der Robbenjagd viel Geld verdienen können, wird eines der schönsten Naturgebiete unserer Erde faktisch in ein Schlachthaus verwandelt.

Das wirtschaftliche Interesse daran, den Gewinn durch die Tötung möglichst vieler Tiere in möglichst kurzer Zeit zu maximieren, ist nicht nur grausam. Es hat auch mit dem eigentlichen Wesen einer Jagd nichts mehr zu tun und birgt die Gefahr, die Sattelrobben ernsthaft in ihrem Bestand zu gefährden.

Protestieren Sie gegen dieses Unrecht und fordern Sie ein Einfuhrverbot für Robbenprodukte nach Deutschland. Die Jäger hätten kein Interesse an den Robben, wenn sich Robbenfelle und andere Robbenprodukte nicht verkaufen ließen.

Kanadas Regierung setzt auf Ihr Schweigen

Ihr Protest hat ganz enorme Wirkung. Das zeigt folgendes Beispiel: In den 70er Jahren begann der IFAW mit intensiver Informationsarbeit über die Robbenjagd in Kanada und konnte damit so starken öffentlichen Druck mobilisieren, dass die Jagd auf "Whitecoat"-Robbenbabys 1987 schließlich verboten wurde. Dank Ihrer Hilfe war die Zahl der getöteten Robben in den 80er Jahren langsam rückläufig, bis die kanadische Regierung Robbenfleisch subventionierte und Quoten festlegte, die das Töten bis zu 250.000 Robben jährlich erlaubten.

Nur durch eine Schließung der Absatzmärkte für Robbenprodukte können wir Robbenjagd zuverlässig stoppen. Italien, Belgien und die Niederlanden beraten schon über solche Einfuhrverbote. In den USA und der EU werden Resolutionen für die Missbilligung der Robbenjagd vorbereitet. Mexiko hat vergangene Woche eine ähnliche Initiative gestartet. In den USA ist die Einfuhr von Robbenprodukten seit 1972 verboten.

Sehr geehrte Frau Ministerin Künast,

die Regierung Kanadas hat für die kommenden drei Jahre die Tötung von knapp einer Million Robben genehmigt. Diese Entscheidung erfüllt mich mit großer Sorge, auch weil die Opfer dieser Jagd zu 95 Prozent junge Tiere im Alter zwischen 12 und 90 Tagen sind.

Das Vorhaben, die Robbenpopulation durch verdeckte Subventionen und unethische Jagdpraktiken zu dezimieren, ist rein politisch motiviert und entbehrt jeder wissenschaftlichen Grundlage. Mit dieser höchsten Robbenfangquote aller Zeiten nimmt die kanadische Regierung sinnlose Grausamkeit und den verantwortungslosen Umgang mit natürlichen Ressourcen billigend in Kauf. Das halte ich für falsch.

Unser Land muss sich nach meinem Empfinden klar von einer solchen rücksichtslosen Ausbeutung der Natur distanzieren. Ein generelles Verbot für die Einfuhr und Verarbeitung von Robbenprodukten in Deutschland wäre ein wichtiger Schritt und ein deutliches Zeichen auch für andere Nationen. Denn ohne einen Absatzmarkt hat die kommerzielle Robbenjagd in Kanada keine Zukunft.

Einfuhrverbote für Robbenprodukte werden in Italien, Belgien und den Niederlanden bereits auf parlamentarischer Ebene diskutiert. Deutschland sollte sich durch geeignete gesetzliche Maßnahmen der wachsenden Opposition gegen die Robbenjagd in Kanada anschließen.

Wenn Politiker das Mitgefühl für Robben als wirtschaftsfeindliche Sentimentalität abtun (was auch aus ökonomischer Sicht völlig haltlos ist), bleibt die Menschlichkeit auf der Stecke. Denn unmenschlich handelt nicht nur derjenige, der Grausamkeit an Tieren verübt, sondern auch ein politisches System, das solches Verhalten toleriert. Bitte setzen Sie sich mit ganzer Kraft für die schnelle Verabschiedung eines Verbots für die Einfuhr und Verarbeitung von Robbenprodukten in Deutschland ein. Die kommerzielle Robbenjagd in Kanada muss endlich gestoppt werden.

THE PROBLEM: SPYCHIPS PLANNED FOR PASSPORTS

The US Department of State plans to put remotely readable radio frequency identification (RFID) spychips into all new passports. These tiny computer spychips will use radio waves to broadcast the information contained on our passports -- including name, date and place of birth, passport number and photograph -- right through our wallets, backpacks, pockets or purses, to nearby reader devices.

The data will not be encrypted or protected in any way. This reckless plan could put Americans traveling overseas at risk of attack by thieves, muggers, kidnappers, and even terrorists who could use portable reader devices to zero in on the radio signals emanating from our passports. Don't let the federal government put a spychip in *your* pocket!

NOTE: While the maximum legal read range of the passport chips is only a few inches, criminals can eavesdrop on official reader devices to capture your data from across a room or potentially even down the block.

(Even if you don't have a passport, this still impacts you. Passport chipping is a trial run for other documents. If we allow this to happen, drivers licenses will be next.)

THE SOLUTION:

Join the nationwide outcry against spychipped passports!

Our friends at RFIDKILLS.COM have put together a quick and easy way to submit your comments against spychipped passports directly to the US State Department.

There are four days left to inundate the State Department with complaints. Write a short note of opposition yourself (even something as simple as "I oppose RFID in passports" is fine.) Then ask five friends to do the same.

It will take only a few thousand Americans speaking out against this plan to put an end to it. Please do your part!
