anbei habe ich die vorläufige Version der Retikulocyten-Untersuchung, die bewusst knapp gefasst ist, damit das wesentliche herauskommt:

Bewusst habe ich auch große Datenmengen nicht mitgeliefert, da im Herbst noch ungefähr 300 bis 400 Personen nach Einschalten des Senders dazukommen.

Die große Inhomogenität der Fragebögen, der Labors und der Situationen führte aber zu einer recht konstanten Bewertung.

In Gruppen ist der Vorher-Nachher-Effekt sehr ähnlich, bei dem MCHC finden sich mindestens nach einem Jahr deutliche Veränderungen, der LFR ist bei aller Variation anderer Parameter im intraindividuellen Vergleich sehr zuverlässig verringert bei 2/3 der Personen, bei einem Drittel erhöht.

Bei Kindern findet sich gegenüber Rentnern eine deutlich Beeinflussbarkeit dieser Felder, hier reagieren die Kleinen sogar zu 80% mit Verringerung der LFR.

In Verbindung mit den neuen Untersuchungen aus Naila also insgesamt wieder schwerwiegende Argumente gegen die sorglose Verbreitung der Technologie.

Auf jeden Fall wird es Ende des Jahres eine vollständigere Version geben.

Vorläufige Ergebnisse der 2. Blutreihenuntersuchung in Neustadt - deutliche Blutbildveränderungen festgestellt!

Seit August letzten Jahres bewegt die Bürger im Umfeld des damals errichteten Mobilfunksenders Winzinger Str. 15 in Neustadt die Angst vor einer Gesundheitsschädigung.

Bekanntlich wurde deshalb eine Blutreihenuntersuchung durchgeführt, um die Blutwerte der Winzinger Bürger vor Aufnahme des Sendebetriebes zu Vergleichszwecken zu dokumentieren.

Nachdem die meisten Antennen des genannten Senders in Betrieb sind, fand am 30. April eine Zweituntersuchung statt, um eventuelle Veränderung im Blutbild festzustellen. An dieser zweiten Untersuchung haben sich 49 Personen aus dem Teilnehmerkreis der Erstuntersuchung beteiligt. Die in beiden Untersuchungen gewonnenen Daten wurden - selbstverständlich anonymisiert – an den Wormser Umweltmediziner Dr. Germann weiter gegeben, der in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Salzburger Umweltmediziner Dr. Oberfeld alle entsprechenden Untersuchungen in Deutschland statistisch auswertet.

Beide Mediziner haben uns als vorläufiges Ergebnis mitgeteilt, dass sich schon nach der relativ kurzen Strahlungsexposition von etwa sechs Monaten GSM und 3 Monaten UMTS das Blutbild der Neustädter Versuchsteilnehmer deutlich verändert hat.

Der so genannte MI-Wert, der die Ausreifung der Reticulozyten (Vorstufe der Erythrozyten = rote Blutkörperchen) wiedergibt, hat sich bei der großen Mehrzahl der Probanden erhöht. Diese Veränderungen sind besonders deutlich bei Kindern und jüngeren Erwachsenen.

Einige Familien im Umkreis um den Sender haben Abschirmmaßnahmen gegen die Mobilfunkstrahlung ergriffen. Bei diesen Personen hat sich der MI-Wert auffälliger Weise generell nicht erhöht. im Gegensatz zur Erhöhung bei 73% der Personen, die keine Abschirmung vorgenommen haben.

Aus umweltmedizinischer Sicht besteht - auch im Vergleich der Neustadter Ergebnisse mit denen anderer Orte – ein direkter Zusammenhang zwischen den Blutbildveränderungen und der Strahlenbelastung durch gepulste Hochfrequenzstrahlung, wie sie von Mobilfunkbasisstationen ausgeht.

Nach allen bisherigen Erfahrungen muss man annehmen, dass sich diese Blutbildveränderungen mit der Dauer der Strahlenexposition noch verstärken.

Beim Treffen des Oberbürgermeisters mit der Mobilfunkinitiative Neustadt am 8. Juli hat Herr Dr. Germann der Stadt die vorläufigen Ergebnisse der Blutuntersuchungen mitgeteilt. Die Initiative wird in den nächsten Tagen auch das zuständige Gesundheitsamt in Neustadt informieren.

Stellungnahme zur Veröffentlichung „Mobilfunk: Ein Gesundheitsrisiko“, Kap. 3 Ausgewählte Studien, 3.8 Studien zum Blutbild („Dr. Germann-Studie“)


Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

bezugnehmend auf Ihre oben genannte Veröffentlichung, in der Sie auch eine Bewertung der sog. Dr. Germann-Studie vornehmen, nehme ich als Umweltmediziner und Koordinator der Retikulocyten-Pilotstudie, die im Auftrag der Interdisziplinären Gesellschaft für Umweltmedizin (IGUMED) konzipiert wurde, wie folgt Stellung:

1. Bei der zitierten Studie handelt es ich um eine Internetveröffentlichung ohne ausdrückliche Erlaubnis des Autors. Die in dem Papier mitgeteilten vorläufigen Ergebnisse waren ausschließlich zur Unterrichtung der an der Untersuchung beteiligten Bürgerinitiativen und deren Mitglieder bestimmt.

2. Die dort mitgeteilten nicht für die Öffentlichkeit bestimmten vorläufigen Ergebnisse eignen sich nicht für eine wie auch immer geartete Bewertung und vor allem nicht für die Beurteilung durch eine Behörde, die objektiv aufklären muss.

3. Natürlich erheben diese vorläufigen Ergebnisse keinen Anspruch auf Wissenschaftlichkeit. Studienziel war und ist zu überpüfen, ob es plausible Hinweise für einen Zusammenhang zwischen gepulster hochfrequenter Strahlung und Knochenmarkeffekten oder –schäden gibt.

4. Die Ergebnisse der Retikulocyten-Pilotstudie werden nach Abschluss der Untersuchungen wahrscheinlich Anfang 2006 veröffentlicht.

Wir fordern Sie auf, den oben genannten Sachverhalt der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen sowie eine weitere öffentliche Bewertung der vorläufigen Studienergebnisse zu unterlassen.

Im übrigen fällt auch unvoreingenommenen Lesern auf, dass keine der in der Broschüre erwähnten Studien, die teilweise durchaus wissenschaftlichen Kriterien standhalten, in irgend einer Weise auch nur annähernd akzeptiert wird. So erweckt das Bayrische Landesamt den Eindruck, dass hier vorgefasste Meinungen pro Mobilfunk unter Ignorierung kritischer Ergebnisse staatlich sanktioniert veröffentlicht wurden.

Wir möchten auch an dieser Stelle darauf hinweisen, dass es unsere ärztliche Pflicht ist, aus der Beobachtungspraxis der niedergelassenen Umweltmediziner heraus auf Entwicklungen und Erkenntnisse hinzuweisen. Es steht dabei für uns außer Frage, dass die im Vorfeld der Mobilfunkverbreitung nicht durchgeführten, notwendigen Studien an Menschen schlichtweg fehlen.

An alle Betroffenen, Initiativen, Organisationen, Bündnisse, Sozialforen, Gewerkschaften und alle anderen, die gegen Sozialraub aktiv sind oder werden wollen!

Eine andere Welt ist möglich und nötig!

Großdemonstration zur Bundesagentur für Arbeit in Nürnberg am 6. November 2004

Die Hartz-IV Gesetze treten am 1. Januar 2005 in Kraft. Sie bringen eine massive Verschlechterung der Situation von Erwerbslosen und Lohnabhängigen.

Das Einkommen der Erwerbslosen wird mit dem Arbeitslosengeld II (ALG II) generell auf 345 Euro (West) und 331 Euro (Ost) abgesenkt. Eigene Ersparnisse, auch die der Partner/in und die Altersvorsorge, müssen weitgehend aufgebraucht werden. Die Zumutbarkeit wird weiter verschärft. Faktisch muss jede Arbeit an jedem Ort angenommen werden, auch Jobs im Niedrigstlohnbereich und gemeinnützige Arbeit. Frauen sind von diesen Verschlechterungen wieder einmal besonders betroffen.

Diese Gesetze sind nicht nur ein massiver Angriff auf die Einkommen der Erwerbslosen. Es wird damit zugleich eine Drohkulisse gegen alle aufgebaut, die noch Arbeit haben. Sie sollen Lohnkürzung, Arbeitszeitverlängerung, Urlaubsstreichung usw. im voraus eilenden Gehorsam akzeptieren, um Entlassungen und den damit verbundenen Absturz in die Armut zu vermeiden.

Es ist eine Lüge der "großen Koalition" der Sozialkahlschlagsparteien, dass diese "Reformen" Arbeitsplätze schaffen. Sie zielen auf die Ausdehnung des Niedriglohnsektors, um so die angestrebte allgemeine Senkung des Lohnniveaus durchzusetzen. Die Hartz- Gesetze sind Teil des umfassenden Umverteilungsprozesses, der unter dem Stichwort Agenda 2010 vor allem von Großunternehmen vorangetrieben wird. Vom wachsenden gesellschaftliche Reichtum profitieren fast ausschließlich die Geld- und Kapitalbesitzer/innen. Dabei verfügen in Deutschland schon heute 365000 Millionäre über ein Viertel des Geld- und den Großteil des Produktivvermögens. Die unteren 50% besitzen gerade mal 4,5% des Vermögens.

Der Druck der Konzerne zum Abbau der Löhne und jeder sozialen Absicherung wird bestehen bleiben, da es keine Grenze für deren Profitgier gibt, außer unserem Widerstand gegen diese Politik. Ohne diesen stehen alle sozialen Errungenschaften auf dem Spiel, die die Arbeiter/innenbewegung in jahrzehntelangen Kämpfen mühsam errungen hat.

Für einen heißen Herbst!

Diesem Sozialraub müssen wir nun entschiedenen Widerstand entgegen setzen.

Schon bisher beteiligten sich Hunderttausende an Demonstrationen gegen die Agenda 2010, Student/innen streikten, Arbeitslose protestierten, Rentner/innen meldeten sich laut mit großen Kundgebungen zu Wort und in Betrieben gab es Warnstreiks gegen Arbeitszeitverlängerung. Ein Beispiel für viele unsichtbare Kämpfe: bei Neoman in Salzgitter kippte eine betriebliche Basisinitiative den Sozialplan und setzte eine kollektive Regelung gegen Entlassungen durch.

Das alles reicht noch nicht aus, sorgen wir gemeinsam dafür, dass die Agenda 2010 fällt!

Wir lehnen die weltweite Standortkonkurrenz und rassistische Ausgrenzungspolitik ab. Wir streben eine Wirtschaftsordnung an, die sich nach den Bedürfnissen der Menschen richtet und unser Leben nicht dem Profitstreben unterwirft.

Deshalb demonstrieren wir am 6. November zur Zentrale der Bundesagentur für Arbeit:

* weil sie bei der Durchsetzung der Hartz-Gesetze eine zentrale Rolle spielt

* weil sie durch die Privatisierung der Vermittlung (PSA) der Wirtschaftskriminalität und Ausbeutung Vorschub leistet

* weil die Stadt Nürnberg als Teil eines Pilotprojektes bei der Umsetzung des ALG II eine Vorreiterrolle einnimmt

* weil die Bundesagentur ein wesentlicher Bestandteil im Gesamtkonzept der Agenda 2010 ist,

* als ein Teil einer bundesweiten Herbstkampagne, die von einem breiten Spektrum von Sozialverbänden bis zu antikapitalistischen Gruppen vorbereitet wird.

Wir fordern die Rücknahme der Agenda 2010, den Stopp des Sozial-, Bildungs- und Lohnabbaus - Nein zu Hartz IV!

Wir leisten Widerstand und setzen uns für eine Welt ein, in der Ausbeutung und Unterdrückung der Vergangenheit angehören!

PS: Für alle die den Inforundbrief Nr.1 nicht bekommen haben, hier eine kurze Zusammenfassung zum Konzept der Demo:

Inhalt, Hintergrund und Ausrichtung:

Die Demonstration soll im Rahmen der Basis-Proteste und des Widerstandes gegen die Sozialkahlschlagspolitik der SPD/Grünen-Regierung, der CDU/CSU und FDP, sowie der Unternehmerverbände stattfinden. Inhaltliche Schwerpunkte der Demo und Aufhänger für die Mobilisierung ist Hartz IV (u.a. geplante Einführung des Arbeitslosengeldes II und Zumutbarkeitsregel), die Ablehnung der Agenda 2010 sowie weitere Themen des Sozialabbaus, z.B. die Kürzungen im Bildungs-, Gesundheits- und Rentenbereich.

Wir wollen mit der Demonstration im Rahmen dieser Herbstaktionen die Kontinuität der Mobilisierungen gegen den Sozialabbau durch Initiativen und Aktivitäten von unten fördern. Ein Jahr nach dem 1.11.03, als in Berlin erstmals die Basisbewegungen 100 000 Leute mobilisieren konnten, und etwa ein halbes Jahr nach den europaweiten Aktionstagen (2./3. April).

Die Großdemonstration steht im Zusammenhang mit weiteren, z.T. dezentralen Aktionen gegen Sozialraub im Herbst 2004. Sie könnte einen zentralen Auftakt der Herbstaktionen bilden, die dann überall in der BRD ihre Fortsetzung finden. Wir sehen es als äußerst wichtig, die Mobilisierung und Sammlung aller Kräfte fortzuführen, die die Agenda 2010 ablehnen, und in einer gemeinsamen größeren Aktion im Herbst wieder zusammenzuführen.

Darum in Nürnberg:

Mit der Bundesagentur für Arbeit steht in Nürnberg die bundesweite Repräsentations- und Verwaltungsinstitution, die somit ein zentrales und öffentlichkeitswirksames Objekt für die Mobilisierung ist.

Sollte das ALG II zum 1.1.05 nicht eingeführt werden, was derzeit noch offen ist, hat sich die SPD/Grünen-Stadtratsfraktion bereits für ein Pilotprojekt zur Umsetzung des ALG II entschieden, will dies zum 1.1.05 umsetzen und bereitet sich bereits jetzt auf die fristgerechte Einführung des ALG II im Rahmen eines in 18 Städten durchgeführten Pilotprojektes vor.

-In Nürnberg existiert eine Infrastruktur, die eine große Mobilisierung und Demo gewährleisten könnte. Die Aktion wird vom Sozialforum Nürnberg getragen und es hat sich bereits eine spektrenübergreifende, hochmotivierte Arbeitsgruppe innerhalb des Sozialforums gebildet.

Blattschüsse auf Arbeitsplatzhirsche: Ein Sammelband der Krisis-Gruppe

Nach allgemeiner Auffassung haben nur diejenigen einen Anspruch auf Wohlstand, die etwas zu seiner Herstellung beitragen. Dieser Beitrag wird gewöhnlich »Arbeit« genannt. Aber Arbeit wird knapp. Überall liegt die Drohung von Entlassungen und Betriebsschließungen in der Luft. In dieser Situation werden Arbeitszeitverlängerungen und Lohnverzicht durchgesetzt.

Propagiert werden Flexibilität, Mobilität und die bedingungslose Verfügbarkeit der abhängig Beschäftigten. Trotzdem gelten immer mehr Menschen als zu alt, zu unerfahren oder werden schlichtweg unbrauchbar.

Gleichzeitig wird ein harter politischer Kurs gegen Arbeitslose gefahren:

Jede nur denkbare Gelegenheit zur Streichung von Leistungen wird genutzt.

Wer beim Arbeitsamt nicht permanent nachweist, sich intensiv um Arbeit zu bemühen und nicht an jeder verordneten Zwangsmaßnahme teilnimmt, sei sie auch noch so unsinnig, wird zumindest zeitweise aus dem Leistungsbezug ausgeschlossen.

Die Krise deklassiert die Leute schneller, als es die meisten für möglich halten. Nach den neuesten »Arbeitsmarktreformen« wird das noch schlimmer.

Die Autoren des vorliegenden Buches reagieren mit einem bewußten Tabubruch:

Sie sprechen der Arbeit ihren Rang als unhinterfragbare Grundlage des Lebens ab. Sie sind Angehörige der Nürnberger »Krisis«-Gruppe, die 1999 mit ihrem »Manifest gegen die Arbeit« erstmals an die Öffentlichkeit getreten ist.

Wer Kritik an der Notwendigkeit zu arbeiten äußert, gilt im allgemeinen als weltfremder Spinner. Dabei war es vor langer Zeit selbst unter renommierten bürgerlichen Wissenschaftlern ein Allgemeinplatz, daß die Arbeit im Zuge der technischen Revolution verschwindet. Offenbar ist das völlig in Vergessenheit geraten. Den Krisis-Autoren ist klar, dass die Menschen Dinge für ihr Überleben herstellen müssen und dies nicht immer ohne Mühsal möglich ist. Sie kritisieren aber den Umstand, daß es beim Einsatz von Arbeit nicht in erster Linie um die Herstellung nützlicher Dinge, sondern vor allem um deren Verkäuflichkeit geht. Arbeit wird nur nachgefragt, wenn sich mit ihrem Einsatz Geld verdienen läßt. Dieser Zusammenhang hat zur Folge, dass viele lebenswichtige Dinge kaum noch hergestellt werden, weil hinter ihnen keine zahlungskräftige Kundschaft steht.

Wer sich auf diesen Kritik-Ansatz einläßt, gelangt zu überraschenden Einsichten. Vieles erscheint als völlig irrwitzig. Auch die gegenwärtige Krise: Obwohl sich an den konkreten Produktionsbedingungen nichts verschlechtert hat, werden immer mehr Menschen vom Wohlstand ausgeschlossen. Berge von Gütern liegen in den Läden und finden keinen Absatz. Es ist, als wäre über Nacht eine unsichtbare Mauer zwischen Menschen und Dingen errichtet worden. Die Autoren betrachten Arbeitskritik als Akt der sozialen Notwehr. Da das System von Arbeit und Geld zunehmend unser Leben in Frage stellt, ist es höchste Zeit, das System von Arbeit und Geld in Frage zu stellen. Auch eine von »Arbeit« befreite Gesellschaft sähe nicht aus wie das Schlaraffenland, aber es würde weniger unnötiges Leid geben. Die prägnanten Texte der Gruppe »Krisis« waren bisher vor allem theoretischer Natur.

Das vorliegende Buch enthält darüber hinaus ein breites Spektrum an Erlebnisberichten. So kann man leicht erfahren, wie die eigene Situation mit grundlegenden gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen zusammenhängt.

Erderwärmung: Klimaexperte prophezeit Heißzeit

Der Kieler Klimaexperte Mojib Latif warnt vor einer drohenden, unkalkulierbaren Erwärmung der Erdatmosphäre: "Der Welt droht eine Heißzeit", sagte der Meteorologe dem Magazin Reader's Digest. Die Hochwasser und Hitzeperioden der vergangenen Jahre hätten bereits gezeigt, dass die extremen Wetterereignisse zunähmen und es deutlich wärmer geworden sei - im Schnitt 0,1 Grad pro Jahrzehnt. Auch die Häufung der extremen Wettersituationen sei auf die globale Erwärmung zurückzuführen. Die globale Erderwärmung wird laut Latif "zu Dreiviertel von den Menschen und zu einem Viertel von natürlichen Einflüssen" verursacht. Eine solche Entwicklung mit andauernden Temperaturen von über 40 Grad hätte für die Natur gravierende Folgen.

Climatic or meteorological changes (behind which the human activities can be also, as the emission of CO2 to the atmosphere) seems the cause of the descent of ducks in USA and Canada.

Lastly the wrong uses of the earth (the intensive agriculture in U.K. and other countries) is the causing of disappearance of species associated to the traditional agriculture that didn't you use chemical products and was respectful with the wild plants and birds.

Mobile phone masts are said to be confusing pigeons and preventing them finding their way back to their lofts.

Pigeon fanciers have banded together to help prevent Orange building a mast at Tow Law, County Durham.

Breeder Frank Armstrong claims pigeon fanciers have been losing double the amount of birds they used to since three masts were erected last year. He added: "They are very young these birds, and they go up to fly and fly around and when they are tired they look for home, and they need these instincts then to find home and they just weren't coming home."

There is no proof the masts are to blame but Mr Armstrong says fanciers want no more building until the matter is investigated. "They want to erect another mast, they keep erecting these masts, but we would rather wait until they find out what is really doing it," he added.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- John Carter thinks he may have solved the mystery of what happened to some of the 2,200 homing pigeons that vanished during two recent long-distance races along the East Coast. "I was leaving work when I saw these birds in the parking lot," Carter said Thursday after leaving his job in Canton, Ohio. "When I got home, I said, 'Wait a minute, those are some odd-looking pigeons.' I thought maybe they were the missing pigeons."

He may be right. Carter is one of dozens of people across the East who have contacted race organizers and animal control groups to report pigeons they suspect may be the missing birds. One person said she saw 100 of them resting on a ledge of a Philadelphia warehouse. Another woman in Pennsauken, N.J., said she took a pigeon that had been resting in her front yard and put it in a birdcage.

About 1,600 pigeons vanished out of 1,800 competing in a 200-mile race from northern Virginia to Allentown, Pa., on Oct 5. And 600 out of 700 birds were missing after a 150-mile race on the same day from western Pennsylvania to Philadelphia.

Joanne Moore, whose husband, Gary, ran the Pennsylvania race, said her phone has been ringing off the hook at her Phoenixville home, with callers from as far away as Ocala, Fla. "It's doubtful they would go that far; but I've been getting calls all over the place," Moore said.

Homing pigeons find their way using the sun and by using the earth's magnetic field as a compass, experts say. Though they are sleeker and a bit bigger than a city-dwelling pigeon, the only definitive way to identify a homing pigeon is by a colored band around its leg. Ordinarily, the swift birds should have been back in their lofts in a matter of hours. So far, no one knows exactly why the birds veered off course.

Some humans haven't embraced the long-lost birds with open arms. A frail, wayward pigeon recently landed in the backyard of bird-watcher John Rahn's home in Hedgesville, W. Va. "It's eating sunflower seeds and chasing other birds away," he said. "I don't mind it that much, but it's making a bigger mess than the other birds do."

Homing pigeons excel in the art of endurance while using age-old instincts to make their way home across thousands of miles. But modern technology is being blamed for their demise after claims that mobile phone masts are causing thousands to get lost each year.

According to homing pigeon enthusiasts, powerful electromagnetic microwave radiation from the masts is destroying the birds' sense of direction. Many owners have had to change the route their birds take to fly home, known as the road, to avoid the perils of modern technology.

The British Royal Pigeon Racing Association (BRPRA) is calling for research into the impact of the masts. It also wants them fitted with tracking devices to monitor what happens when they pass the masts.

Delegates at the British homing world show of the year in Blackpool, which took place last week complained that they had lost dozens of homing pigeons over the past few years because of the masts. Anne Pitkeathly, from the Isle of Wight, who has been racing pigeons for the past five years said that the problem with masts had become so severe that she had had to change the road her birds take to fly home. Ms Pitkeathly said: "The route between Cornwall and the island used to pass through Dorset, where there has been a proliferation of masts. In a season I lost 40 birds and had to switch to the Dover south road which has been much better. "I would think that it should be possible to fit trackers to birds... to know exactly if they are put off course by emissions from masts."

Graham Deacon, also from the Isle of Wight, said he would welcome research into the issue. "On one race from Winchester last year I lost more than 80 birds," he said.

Peter Bryant, general manager of the BRPRA, said the organisation had been inundated with complaints about pigeons getting lost because of mobile phone masts. Mr Bryant drew a contrast between the stark dangers faced by pigeons carrying vital messages during the second world war and the risks posed to the birds today. "Their instincts carried them back through hostile fire and they were even parachuted to members of the resistance and made their way back from that," he said. "It would be ironic if they were now the victims of an unseen enemy."

"A lot of people think it's mobile phone masts." She claimed one of her pigeons had recently reacted badly after being near a mast, saying it was "stressed" and "trying to be sick". Previous research by German scientists in 1999 suggested that short wave radiation had an "undefined negative" impact on homing pigeons. It was found that exposed birds took longer to get home, flew at lower levels and were reluctant to go near transmitters. Between 50,000 to 60,000 pigeons are estimated to have gone missing last year due to problems such as bird of prey attacks and poor weather, the RPRA said.

A mobile phone mast is being blamed for the disappearance of over 50 racing pigeons. Monday's edition of The Times reports that pigeon fancier David Blain has lost two-thirds of his birds since the mast was build next to his farm. He believes that emissions from the mast are responsible for damaging the birds' homing instincts. Pigeons have been kept at the family farm for over 40 years, and Blain insists this is the first time so many birds have been lost. He, along with hundreds of fellow breeders, is reported to be close to taking legal action again the mobile phone companies -- who consistently deny that emissions from their equipment are harmful.

A representative of the Mobile and Telecoms Advisory Group told The Times that there was no evidence that emissions from mobile phone masts could have a damaging effect on animals or birds, but added that more research might be done into the issue in the future. This case isn't the first time that mobile phone masts have been accused of affecting birds. Recent research by the Swiss Bird Study Organisation found that racing pigeons got confused near mobile masts, and also flew much lower than normal.

Thank you Mr. Chairman:

My name is Matthew McDaniel.

I am with the Akha Heritage Foundation. I have lived and worked with the Akha people of Thailand for 13 years. I am here to represent numerous Akha communities in northern Thailand who live in a defacto state of siege. Very few Akha have passports. We hope to sponsor several Akha to this forum next year. Numbering 70,000 people in Thailand, the Akha are some of the poorest people in the region. Their total population in China, Myanmar, Laos and Thailand is only 400,000 souls.

But it is hard to discuss conflict resolution when conflict is resolved with gunfire, the Akha people ending up dead, their land taken, at the hands of the Thai army, police and forestry departments. The US sponsored Drug War saw many of the Akha killed in extra-judicial executions during 2003. This purge in Thailand saw more than 2274 extra-judicial killings from all groups. This policy has continued since then, in the distracting shadow of the Iraq war, mostly un-noticed and un-challenged by the outside world.

I was deported from Thailand in April of this year by the Thai government after filing a 1503 report with the UNOHCR in January of this year citing 47 cases of extra-judicial killings and torture. Since my deportation there have been numerous Thai activists murdered for opposing the government’s will. For the Akha people to protest their treatment or attend sessions like this one is therefore quite dangerous.

The world is at war, for the indigenous the world has been at war for hundreds of years, yet the murder of indigenous people is hardly recognized. There is the need for conflict to be resolved by mediation on the part of the United Nations BEFORE people are being killed. How many people came to the UN from Sudan, from Rwanda before the mass killings? Had there been effective mediation, these events would not have occurred. The same goes for the Akha. Will the Akha of Thailand have to starve to death before discussions can take place? Who should they go to in order to get mediation, protection?

Will the UN listen now and ACT, or will the Akha be ground into the sands of time, hardly noticed or known, while Thailand can sit on this and that Human Rights Commission, with the UN being none the wiser to what the government of Thailand is doing to the Akha people in the north of Thailand. A trade partner with much of the world, while running progroms against the Akha people which are impossible for the Akha people to survive.

We are also very concerned with countries which send missionaries to Thailand. In cases of the abuse of Akha children who are removed from their villages to mission residential schools, the missionaries are not brought to accountability. In a recent case we repeatedly made request to the police of Sweden that they investigate, but they did not do so. The Swedish missionary had already been arrested by the Thai police in what was a substantial case, but was allowed to get bail and continue moving about in Thailand. He currently remains at large.

We have asked the World Health Organization repeatedly to stop the forced vaccination of Akha women during pregnancy. The Thai authorities tell the Akha women that they will not receive ID cards for their babies if they do not receive the vaccine. However many women miscarry after the vaccine. The WHO would not act. Nothing changes.

To resolve conflicts the UN and other agencies must respond to the concerns of the indigenous and live up to their responsibilities to protect human rights for all peoples, not just western peoples. And I would like to ask that the UN provide better support, especially travel, visa and technical support to the indigenous people who must make great sacrifices to come to the UN.

Thousands of stray dogs will be poisoned ahead of next month's Olympic Games in Athens despite a campaign by the RSPCA to prevent their slaughter.

The animal welfare charity says that the strays will be killed because the Greek authorities fear that the sight of packs of dogs roaming the streets will damage their efforts to use the Games to show the world that their country is modern and civilised.

There are an estimated 15,000 stray dogs in Athens and although the government has taken some action to remove them from the streets without killing them, the RSPCA says that local authorities will not have the resources or the commitment to round up the animals and keep them in shelters during the Games.

Officially, the Greek authorities say that there will be no mass poisoning and the Athens Olympics Committee has asked animal welfare groups to help round up the dogs.

There are however, only one or two shelters in Athens that can take dogs and they are already overcrowded, so the Greeks face a choice of leaving the dogs roaming the streets during the Olympics or poisoning them.

Greece's fledgling animal welfare groups said that the mass slaughter of strays had already begun. Eighty dogs were recently found dead in the coastal resort of Saronida, where some members of the British team are expected to stay.

One animal welfare activist said: "There has been a big increase in poisonings recently and we expect it to rise sharply as the Games get closer. We are doing what we can, with a lot of help from international organisations such as the RSPCA, but we are fighting against a culture that is deeply entrenched." The RSPCA has campaigned hard to improve animal welfare in Greece and in particular to end the practice of poisoning strays to control their numbers.

The Greek government has expressed a desire to give more protection to animals and introduced tougher laws last year. Antonia Kanellopoulou, the deputy mayor of Athens, said: "Stray animals need our love."

The legislation has, however, had little effect and the RSPCA says that many local authorities in Athens and other areas hosting Olympic events will use the traditional method of poisoning the animals to clear the streets before the Games begin on August 13.

David Bowles of RSPCA International, who recently returned from Athens where RSPCA inspectors were training Greek officials to catch and treat strays humanely, said: "We are seriously concerned that thousands of dogs will be poisoned so that Greece can show that Athens is a pristine modern city. They don't have the manpower or the shelters to round up all the dogs. A lot of the local authorities simply don't know how to deal with dogs humanely. We have put a lot of effort into helping them to change their ways, but the results have been very patchy. We would like to see them using private shelters so that all the dogs can be given homes during the Olympics but it looks like that is not going to happen."

Mr Bowles said that mass poisoning was "barbaric" and a "short-term fix" that would not solve the problem of strays. Another senior RSPCA official said: "Greece's success in the European football championships in Portugal and now hosting the Olympic Games has undoubtedly boosted its prestige.

"They are desperate to make a success of the Games coming back to where they started. But they cannot call themselves civilised if they continue to poison dogs."

Carol McBeth, the director of the London-based Greek Animal Welfare Fund, said that she was concerned about many areas outside the centre of Athens. "I think we may see poisonings in the places where the cycling, football and equestrian events are being held," she said.

"They will be very keen to make sure that those areas are clear and they don't have shelters for the dogs."

Poisoning animals is a criminal offence in Greece, but it is such a traditional method of controlling the stray population that many local authorities turn a blind eye to the practice and actively engage in it themselves.

Greece does not have the same tradition of caring for pets as Britain and many animals are dumped when owners become bored with them. It is illegal to have animals put down in Greece and there is no tradition of taking in strays.

The problem has been made worse by a "macho mentality" that finds it "unnatural" to neuter cats and dogs, although a neutering programme introduced by the government has had some success in Athens.

Anastase Scopelitis, the Greek ambassador to London, who is in Greece on holiday, was unavailable for comment. An embassy official said: "Greece takes animal welfare seriously and our government has taken measures to improve our standards."

SANTA FE, N.M. -- A crucial struggle over land stewardship is taking place south of my home on the Greater Otero Mesa, a1.2-million-acre stretch of grassland that looks pretty much the way it did when Coronado explored the region almost 500 years ago. As much as half of Otero Mesa still qualifies for protection under the landmark 1964 Wilderness Act, which was enacted when I headed the Interior Department under presidents Kennedy and Johnson. This law prevents industrial development on designated federal land "retaining its primeval character and influence."

But the Bush administration, determined to ransack public lands for the last meager pockets of petroleum, has turned my old department into a servile, single-minded adjunct of the Energy Department. It is intent on opening Otero Mesa and other wild lands to oil and gas exploration under the guise of reducing our ever-growing dependency on imported oil.

Here in New Mexico, where citizens cherish sublime landscapes, the administration's attack on the mesa is a heated issue. Gov. Bill Richardson has been joined by lawmakers, environmental groups and thousands of citizens in opposing drilling on Otero.

This crusade is part of a wave of public resentment across the West over the dark chapter that President Bush and his aides are writing in the history of the American conservation movement. From California to Colorado, Montana to Arizona, drill rigs pockmark the West's wild places, licensed by a White House that views opening of the nation's last untrammeled country to private development as a prime economic priority.

For the last 50 years as a congressman, as Interior secretary, as a citizen activist and a historian, I have been involved in the conservation cause. Until the last few years Americans have taken pride in the fact that our country has set the standard for innovative ideas about resource stewardship, and has seen them emulated throughout the world.

The word "conservation" -- and the concept of science-based management of resources -- did not exist until Teddy Roosevelt became president. He initiated the reforms and raised the banner, halting raids on the public's resources and creating millions of acres of national forests, parks and wildlife refuges.

Even during the Great Depression, the second President Roosevelt enlarged his cousin's legacy. FDR put people to work replanting forests, bringing electricity to rural areas and enlarging the nation's national parks.

A third wave of conservation got underway in 1961 when Kennedy called for the establishment of wilderness reserves and the addition of seashores to the park system, inspiring conservationists to revive ideas that had been shelved after Pearl Harbor.

My office sorted through the results: Should I urge the New Jersey governor to oppose the powerful New York Port Authority's plan for a super jetport in order to preserve the Great Swamp? Should I travel to Maine to help Sen. Edmund Muskie stop a dam that would flood the storied Allagash River? Could I persuade the budget people to spend $30 million more to prevent development inside the new Point Reyes National Seashore in California? We did all that, and more.

In those days, partisan lines were never drawn where conservation issues were concerned. Kennedy's Wilderness bill passed the Senate by a vote of 78 to 12, with only six members of each party voting no. Republicans overwhelmingly voted for the bill largely because of the leadership of a farsighted Californian, Thomas Kuchel.

From 1961 to 1981, every president -- Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford and Carter -- gave his unwavering support to environmental reforms. Richard Nixon set a high goal by declaring that the 1970s should be the "environmental decade." He created the Environmental Protection Agency and approved laws to protect endangered species.

As the country moved rightward with Reagan, the rhetoric may have been negative, but in the end no effort was made to repeal important environmental laws. George H.W. Bush had a positive record, and although Bill Clinton was stymied by a hostile Congress, he used his executive powers to achieve positive results.

Overall, it's a record that bolsters my thesis that this administration is rowing against the tide of American history. Otero Mesa symbolizes its narrow focus. Bush and company have not put forward a single positive new conservation concept. They have systematically lowered pollution regulations to please favored industries. They have allowed park and forest maintenance to be neglected and under-funded. I view these events and developments with dismay. This is a time for straight talk, for those who love the land to make their voices heard before more damage is done to the resources we all own.

All diese Wirkungen treffen Frauen in Ostdeutschland besonders hart. Mit ihrer Erwerbsarbeit hatten fast alle Frauen in Ostdeutschland eigenständige Ansprüche auf Lohnersatzleistungen erworben. Dafür werden sie jetzt von Rot-Grün bestraft. Beim Arbeitslosengeld II zählt nicht mehr ihre eigene Leistung, sondern das Einkommen des Partners. Das ist die Hausfrauisierung der Arbeitsmarkt- und Erwerbslosenpolitik.

Hartz IV verstößt eklatant gegen das Grundgesetzgebot zur Gleichbehandlung von Männern und Frauen und gegen die EU-Richtlinie zum Gender-Mainstreaming.

This is just a reminder that in 1978 a paper was published reporting results of exposing adult human beings in the laboratory to extremely low levels of RF/MW radiation; here is the citation:

Low power radio-frequency and microwave effects on human electroencephalogram and behavior

Effects were found at power densities from 10^-16 to 10^-12 watts/square cm. (The people were quite close to the antenna and may have been in the near field; I'm looking into this.)

It is rare to have laboratory data on mammals--let alone on human beings--at such extremely low levels, so this paper is worthy of study. (The author is no longer at the address given in this paper.)

This paper has relevance to the investigation I have been doing on a Wisconsin dairy farm where there were mild, but potentially serious, mammalian health effects as a result of RF/MW exposure from fixed transmitters in the vicinity. The estimated microwave power density at this farm was 20-200 picowatts/cm2; it was too low to be measured directly with the one instrument available. (I hope to have a paper written on the farm investigation by March, 2004.) --

In a pilot study of ten human subjects, temporary changes in brain waves and behavior were seen on exposure to power densities lower than 10(-12) W/cm2, which is substantially below typical urban levels. Frequencies included .1 to 960 MHz continuous and 8.5 to 9.6 GHz pulse-modulated waves. Since the relaxation frequency of protein-bound water is considered to fall between 100 and 1,000 MHz, absorptions and quantum effects may be the mechanistic basis for the electroencephalogram changes observed in most of the subjects produced by 10(-15) W/cm2 cw radio-frequency energy of between 130 and 960 MHz. Constructive and destructive interference patterns from standing waves within the skull possibly interact with the bioelectric generators in the brain, since electroencephalogram wave amplitudes and frequencies increased or decreased respectively at different radio wavelengths.

As for the Schwarzenburg case let me citate Neil (Cherry on safe exposure levels, 2000): "Experimentation is not always possible but where it is, it is very powerful. For example, in the Schwarzenburg Study, involving a shortwave radio tower, a significant dose-response relationship for sleep disturbance was observed. Confirmation of cause and effect came from turning the transmissions off for 3 days without notifying the residents. Sleep quality improved significantly (p<0.001), with a delay of about one day, even in the group with the lowest exposure (Group C). This shows that even though they experienced the lowest exposure, the RF signal was still interfering with their brains and their sleep. When the transmission was turned off permanently, measured human melatonin levels rose significantly (Prof. Theo Abelin Pers. Comm.). This is a biological mechanism but it was identified after the assessment of cause and effect was concluded."

Neil also analyzes in same article the Moscow embassy case in very detail. So Neil every time when been asked about safe level, always answered: "ZERO"...

As for low frequencies' damage, it may be due to inherent or modulated frequencies that match natural brain's and cause damage. For example: TETRA 4 slots emisions pulse lasts for ~57 milliseconds, now, divide 1000 ms by 57 ms you get ~ 17 Hz, that matches natural neural signal enhancing calcium efflux (16 Hz), then calcium goes out, melatonin goes down, etc etc. Some modulated or inherent frequencies, such as 4.5 Hz may cause brain non function or paranoid reactions, at 6.6 Hz depression or suicidal, at 11 Hz mania or rage, and 25 Hz may cause severe vision problems up to blindness, and/or heart attack... Such data was obtained during development of psychotronic weapons in the EAST and in the WEST.

Krebs durch Mobilfunk?

Eine Arbeitsgruppe der Abteilung für Klinische Chemie des Klinikums der FU Berlin veröffentlicht aufsehenerregende Ergebnisse. In Versuchsreihen wurden verschiedene menschliche Zell-Typen elektromagnetischen Feldern unterschiedlicher Frequenz ausgesetzt. Die Wissenschaftler um K. Schlatterer, R. Tauber und R. Fitzner erzielten bei der Bestrahlung von Zellen der menschlichen Promyelozyten- zellinie HL 60 mit einem kontinuierlichen 1800-MHz-Feld bei 37 °C signifikante Ergebnisse: In den Erbgut-Trägern, den Chromosomen, wurde eine hohe Zahl von DNA- Doppelstrangbrüchen gemessen. Dies ist bislang kein Beweis, aber ein Hinweis auf eine erhöhte Empfindlichkeit bestimmter Zellen gegenüber elektromagnetischen Feldern. Vermutet wird als Ursache eine Veränderung bei den Reparatur-Enzymen.

Diese Forschungsergebnisse sind als gewichtige Hinweise zu werten, daß elektromagnetische Felder wie bei Mobilfunk und Handys das menschliche Erbgut schädigen und Krebs1 erzeugen. Um sichere Aussagen treffen zu können, müssen die Versuche jedoch zunächst von anderen Forschergruppen wiederholt werden, wobei sich zeigen muß, ob sie als reproduzierbar angesehen werden können.

Wuppertal, Juni 1999. (DTL) - 'Tinnitus ist eine Volkskrankheit' resümiert Elke Knör, Präsidentin der Deutschen Tinnitus-Liga. Mit knapp 3 Millionen aktuell Betroffenen, das entspricht vier Prozent der Gesamtbevölkerung, liege die Quote ähnlich hoch wie bei Diabetes. Bereits jeder vierte der Gesamtbevölkerung hat schon mal Tinnitus erlebt. Allein 1,5 Millionen Bundesbürger beeinträchtigt der Tinnitus mittelschwer bis zur Unerträglichkeit. Sie benötigen in unterschiedlicher Art der therapeutischen Hilfe. Diese Zahl liegt um 50% höher als bisher angenommen. Unerwartet hoch ist auch die jährliche Zuwachsrate von 270.000 Betroffenen mit chronischem Tinnitus. Ein Tinnitus wird als chronisch bezeichnet, wenn er mehrere Wochen andauert."

In Bayern gab es ein Institut für Arbeitsmedizin, dessen Professor dafür berüchtigt war, daß er zugunsten Betroffener nie etwas "mit an Sicherheit grenzender Wahrscheinlichkeit" herausfinden konnte. Das liebte die Industrie und so überschütteten sie ihn mit Aufträgen unter kräftiger Mithilfe einer einseitigen Justiz, die damit, statt Recht zu sprechen, tatsächlich Unrecht gefördert und den Geist der Rechtsidee gebeugt hat, nämlich daß Geschädigte Anspruch auf Schadensersatz haben. Denn meist wird nach dem Prinzip geurteilt: in dubio pro pecuniam et contra populum (Im Zweifel für das Geld und gegen das Volk).

Die Medizin steht in dem schlechten Ruf, schon immer mit den Mächtigen und vor allem mit den Geldgebern ein allzu enges Amigo-Bündnis einzugehen. Möglicherweise hat dies mit ihrem unstillbaren Hunger nach Geld und Anerkennung zu tun. Sieht man sich das auf den ersten Blick ausgezeichnet erscheinende Buch von Feldmann et al. genauer an, so fällt auf, daß die AutorInnen ziemlich blind für die epidemische Entwicklung des Tinnitus sind und noch nicht einmal theoretisch die Komponente Umweltverschmutzung und Technologiebelastung erwägen. Das Tinnitus etwa mit der industriell- gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung zu tun hat, erfährt man in dem sonst sehr informativen Werk nur implizit durch die Formulierung: "Unter den Lebensbedingungen einer Industriegesellschaft tritt bei 35-45% aller Erwachsenen über 17 Jahren zu irgendeinem Zeitpunkt ein transientes oder permanentes Ohrgeräusch unterschiedlicher Lautheit auf."

Was spricht nun überhaupt dafür, die Forschungshypothese Umweltgifte und Technologiebelastung als bedeutungsvoll für die Tinnitus- Epidemie aufzustellen? Der Grund ist so offensichtlich, daß die Tinnitus- Lobby offenbar dem Prinzip folgt: vor lauter Bäumen den Wald nicht sehen:

Es ist einfach nicht normal und nachvollziehbar, daß innerhalb kürzester Zeit urplötzlich Millionen von Tinnituskranken mit exorbitanten jährlichen Zuwachsraten wie Pilze aus dem Boden schießen. Man erinnere sich: das erste deutsche Tinnitus-Buch erschien 1986, dessen Autor noch im selben Jahr die Tinnitus- Liga ins Leben rief. Noch 1979 kommt im großen Uexküll zur Psychosomatik - wie in den allermeisten anderen Psychosomatikbüchern auch - das Stichwort Tinnitus gar nicht vor.

Wie kommt es also zu dieser Tinnitus-Epidemie?

Ist es (auch) eine Mode Erscheinung? Ist es (auch) eine suggestive Massen-Epidemie? Ist es (auch) ein getrimmtes Syndrom? Steckt (auch) die Abrechnungslobby dahinter? Spielen (auch) Umweltverschmutzung und (auch) Technologiebelastung [Elektrosmog] eine wichtige Rolle?

Überlegen wir: was war 1986? Gibt es irgendein herausragendes Ereignis, daß wir zu dieser relativ plötzlichen Tinnitusepidemie in Beziehung setzen könnten? Oder sollten wir die Umweltverschmutzung und Technologieentwicklung der ganzen 80er Jahre - oder noch länger? - betrachten (s.u.)?

Das Jahr 1986 (Quelle: Chronik 1986)

* Reaktorunglück Tschernobyl (April: radioaktive Wolken bringen Tschernobyl vor die Haustür; Süddeutschland besonders betroffen; München 150 Bequerel; erst am 2. Mai warnt die Bundesregierung vor Frischmilch und Blattgemüse): 50 Mill. Curie kondensierbare Spaltprodukte gelangen in die Umwelt.

* Kohl beruft Wallmann am 6.6. als ersten Minister für Umwelt, Naturschutz und Reaktorsicherheit.

* Gefahrenstoffverordnung 1.10.: In der Raumluft zahlreicher Kindergärten wird Dioxin festgestellt. Asbest wird in Spielzeug untersagt. Wohngift Vorbeugung: Formaldehyd.

* Rheinverschmutzung (Rhein-"Unfälle": 31.10.: Ciba-Geigy, Basel; 11.11.: Sandoz AG, Basel; 21.11.: BASF, Ludwigshafen; 26.11.: Bayer, Leverkusen).

Es ist natürlich auch möglich, daß das Phänomen Tinnitus schon einige Jahre oder sogar Jahrzehnte unter den Lebensbedingungen einer Industriegesellschaft schwelte und erst in den 80er Jahren die entsprechende Aufmerksamkeit fand. Doch auch dies wäre natürlich kritisch zu untersuchen und zu reflektieren.

Die wichtigsten Faktoren aus Umweltverschmutzung und Technologiebelastung in der 2. Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts sind:

* Der Ausstoß von Schadstoffen und Giften (Abgabe an Wasser, Boden, Luft und Amosphäre; Lebensmittel, Futtermittel, Alltagsobjekte, Industrieprodukte, Geräte, Farben, Lacke usw.)

* Radioaktive Belastungen

* Ozonloch und Bestrahlung

* Belastung durch Elektrosmog (Abstrahlung durch Sender und Geräte)

* Lärmbelastung (Verkehr, Technische Akustische Geräte [z.B. Rundfunk, Verstärker], Disco- Musik, Tiefflug)

* Belastung durch erhöhte Anpassungsleistungen ("Streß")

Auch die Allergien sollen sehr zugenommen haben. Bereits 1987 werden 20 Millionen AllergikerInnen in Deutschland geschätzt - 1/3 der Bevölkerung. Man führt die Störung des Immunsystems auf die wachsende Belastung der Luft, Wasser, Lebensmittel und der Haushalte durch Umweltgifte zurück.

Die Probleme der Umwelt erfahren in den 80er Jahren durch zahlreiche Umwelt- Katastrophen (Ozonloch, Waldsterben, Industrieunfälle, Wasserverschmutzung) eine erhöhte Aufmerksamkeit. Die Bedeutung des zunehmenden kritischen Umweltbewußtseins kommt am klarsten durch die Umweltschutzbewegungen zum Ausdruck (z.B. Greenpeace, ökologische Parteien, Robin Wood).

According to a new "study" by Teleconomy, children and adolescents are now becoming so emotionally attached to their phones that they cannot live without them. This "study" is the sort of research the cell phone industry is actively investing their money behind. Teleconomy's web site honestly explains why, to quote:

"Our approach is to work closely in partnership with our clients and in so doing have a deep understanding of their commercial and strategic imperatives, so ensuring our out puts are appropriate and practically usable. The fact that the overwhelming majority of our clients continue a long-term relationship with us more than ably demonstrates this."

AND the industry body, the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) calls this independent research!

So now that Teleconomy informs us that kids are so addicted to their cell phones they cannot live without them, AMTA has thoughtfully devised "Developing an Acceptable Use Policy for Mobile Phones in Your School" ( see below) that will ensure total marketing - promoting cell phones in all Australian schools. Copies of this document have been provided to the Australian Council of State School Organisations (ACSSO), the peak national parent organisation representing the interests of children enrolled in government schools throughout Australia, the Independent Schools Council of Australia (ISCA), the national representative for independent schools, to Federal, State and Territory Education Ministers, and to other relevant organisations.

This is one of the key findings of a study into how people use their mobile phones entitled Me, My Mobile and I.

The annual study from research firm Teleconomy reveals that 10 to 14-year-olds - dubbed M-Agers - are rapidly becoming the most sophisticated users of phones.

Even toddlers are able to tell the difference between incoming phone calls and text messages said Professor Michael Hulme, chairman of Teleconomy.

Socially acceptable

For children, phones are not so much about communication as a device for downloading things such as pop news, games and ringtones.

"These M-Agers are very clued up on phone functions. They want highly functional phones and they give them a high degree of personalisation," said Prof Hulme.

Phones are rapidly replacing trainers as a social marker.

"The phone plays a role in the playground and can be a ticket to entry into certain groups," he said.

In some cases the phones themselves are becoming 'virtual playgrounds', as children fill their free time with texting their friends and playing games.

In denial

Youngsters are also far more aware of the more sophisticated uses of phones, with 71% aware of video-calling compared to 54% of adults.

About two-thirds knew about Java applications like games, while only 44% of adults were aware of this function.

This will all be great news for operators keen to push more and more services on phones.

"They are growing up ready to take on these services," said Prof Hulme.

The study found that adults were more ambivalent about their phone use, with a growing number of people (18%) in denial about how much they need their mobile phones.

"The denier believes the myth that they are in control of the device but when we spoke to them it began to dawn on them that they were not," said Prof Hulme.

"This group represents a field day for the network providers as they put themselves on tariffs too small for their needs and then go drastically over their free minutes and text allowance," he added.

Objects of desire

For a quarter of the population, their relationship with their mobile was more honestly assessed - they admitted that they just could not live without it.

"These people have their phone on 24 hours a day. They are frightened of missing a call because to not be available is to cut oneself off from one's social network," said Prof Hulme.

Phones are rapidly replacing address books, diaries, watches and alarm clocks as people turn increasingly to their handsets to help manage their lives.

They are also becoming photo albums as people personalise their handsets with things dear to them, such as pictures of friends and family.

"One woman who liked a drink had a picture of a pint of beer on hers," revealed Prof Hulme.

There are lessons here for manufacturers concentrating on making phones as smart and function-filled as possible.

"There are actually more pragmatic ways of making money," said Prof Hulme.

These include increasing the amount of space for storing texts, giving more indication of where calls are coming from and a better way of ordering all the information people are increasingly storing on phones.

The Me, Myself and I study conducted 1,400 interviews between February and April including questionnaires, face-to-face interviews, focus groups and telephone surveys.

Mobile phone guidelines for schools

The increased ownership of mobile phones requires that school administrators, teachers, students, and parents take steps to ensure that mobile phones are used responsibly within schools.

To assist schools in managing their students' behaviour in relation to mobile phones, the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) has created a template policy document Developing an Acceptable Use Policy for Mobile Phones in Your School for use by schools.

The document, which sets out appropriate behaviour relating to the use of mobile phones, is designed to supplement school rules. It is intended to be adapted by schools as they see fit, and adopted with the consent of the parents/guardian, teachers and the student.

Developing an Acceptable Use Policy for Mobile Phones in Your School gives schools the means to make clear to all concerned what they considers are the appropriate uses of mobile phones within their boundaries, and the power to act when phones are used inappropriately.

U.S. Congressman Maurice Hinchey says the Food and Drug Administration's chief counsel "is aggressively intervening against the public on behalf of drug companies and medical device manufacturers" and this "pattern of collusion" has "corrupted [the FDA's] mission to protect the public health."

Daniel Troy, who lobbied for drug and tobacco companies before being appointed as USDA counsel, reportedly told drug companies to inform him of lawsuits so that the FDA could strengthen their defense.

"Make it sound like a Hollywood pitch," he advised. Troy has filed USDA briefs on behalf of former client Pfizer, SmithKline Beecham Consumer Products and GlaxoSmithKline.

The Issue:

The state is clear cutting about eight acres of the Mohican Forest.

Our Opinion:

Those who truly want to protect the forest should focus their energies on creating a guarantee that the forest will remain protected in the future.

On one hand, you don't have much room to complain about the state cutting down trees when you accepted the state plan that identified this location for timbering.

But on the other hand, the state shouldn't be shocked by complaints against cutting down 175-year-old oak trees, no matter how much planning was done.

Controversy was stirred again in the Mohican Forest last week when the state clear cut about eight acres of the forest and did additional work in about three other acres. The timbering was part of a plan put together over the last decade by an ad hoc committee of state officials and citizens.

The plan is aimed at protecting huge tracts of the forest from any timbering in the future, but it set aside some sections of the forest for a variety of forestry management techniques. These techniques are to be exhibition plots to educate the public on the issues involved with forestry management.

The ad hoc committee was formed after citizens bitterly protested more widespread logging in the forest during the early 1990s. Some of those who led the protests were appointed to the committee. The eight acres cut last week were identified for that purpose in the plan.

The state responded to the complaints last week by saving it did only what was called for within the plan. State officials questioned how some committee members could complain when they helped develop the plan.

These are good questions. But the state obviously miscalculated if it actually believed it could cut down trees that have been there since the time of the Civil War without any negative reactions.

One wonders why another area couldn't have been selected for clear cutting that was just as accessible for the public education programs, but didn't contain such ancient specimens.

The state created a credibility problem for itself with its arrogant behavior during the early'90s. But it has worked to be more inclusive and responsive as it relates to those who cherish this forest.

Cutting down 175-year-old trees won't help that credibility, no matter what the circumstances.

The real issue in Mohican isn't this area that is such a small part of the forest. It is guaranteeing that vast reaches of the forest the state has promised to protect actually remain untouched.

Although the state has agreed to the plan that provides this protection, there has been no action taken or document created to guarantee this protection survives future elections and political shifts.

Those who truly want to protect the forest should focus their energies on creating this guarantee.

The Mayor of Begles, Noel Mamere, joined the protest near Toulouse Hundreds of protesters have destroyed a field of genetically modified maize in south-west France.

The demonstrators ripped up the transgenic crop plantation at Menville, near Toulouse.

The activists were led by radical French farmer Jose Bove, who said the protest was being taken in the interests of consumers.

About 15 policemen watched the destruction and took photographs of those involved, but did not intervene.

"We observed the protest, took down the identities of some of the participants and took photos after warning the organisers that it was illegal and that the information would be forwarded to the Haute-Garrone region's prosecutor," an officer told Reuters news agency.

Mr Bove said the protesters were prepared to face the consequences.

"This protest is legitimate and we did it to protect the consumer. We will assume the legal risks."

It was the latest in a series of protests by opponents of GM crops across Europe.

In May, a French court fined three people 600 euros (£396) each for destroying test fields of GM crops in 1997.

There have been about a dozen prosecutions of anti-GM activists in France over the past seven years.

Also in May, the European Commission lifted a six-year moratorium on GM foods, permitting companies to sell maize known as Bt-11, packaged as tinned sweetcorn.

Critics say GM plants and foods have not been properly tested and it is too soon to say if they are safe.
