For thousands of years, the indigenous people of the Nakai Plateau in Laos have farmed the land and fished the nearby waters of the Nam Theun River (a major tributary of the Mekong) for generations. The so-called Nam Theun 2 Hydropower Project would force over 6,000 indigenous people living on the plateau to leave their homes and move onto land that is unfit for farming.

The billion-dollar project calls for damming the Nam Theun River to create a reservoir and diverting water to the Xe Bang Fai River, which will wreak ecological havoc in central Laos. The rivers abound with fish species that tens of thousands of people depend on for food.

The dam also threatens rare wildlife, such as white-winged ducks and one of the last wild herds of Asian elephants.

On March 31, the World Bank Board of Directors will decide whether or not to fund this controversial project. You can influence the Bank's support for Nam Theun 2 by asking the U.S. Secretary of Treasury John Snow, who wields enormous influence over World Bank decisions, to oppose the project when it comes to the Board for approval.

Kinder absorbieren Handystrahlung leichter als Erwachsene

Ist Handystrahlung für den Menschen schädlich oder nicht? Zu diesem Thema gibt es wohl so viele Pro- wie Kontra-Studien. Viele der Studien haben ein Objekt der Untersuchung lange Zeit vernachlässigt: Kinder.

Mittlerweile warnen immer mehr Wissenschaftler davor, Kind leichtfertig mit Mobiltelefonen auszustatten. "Wir wissen eigentlich nicht viel über die Auswirkungen der Handystrahlung auf Kinder, aber es gibt bestimmte Spekulationen", sagt der Biotechnologe Henry Lai von der University of Washington. Lai beschäftigt sich schwerpunktmäßig mit dem Verhältnis zwischen elektromagnetischer Strahlung und verschiedenen Krankheiten.

Seit zehn Jahren diskutieren Forscher nun schon, ob die Strahlung, die von Handys ausgeht, die DNA nachhaltig beeinflusse und die Entstehung von Gehirntumoren fördere.

GB: Leitfaden für Eltern

In Großbritannien hat der Vorsitzende des National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) Eltern als Vorsichtsmaßnahme geraten, Kindern unter acht Jahren keine Mobiltelefone in die Hand zu geben - mehr dazu in http://futurezone.orf.at/futurezone.orf?read=detail&id=260596

"Wenn man ein Mobiltelefon verwendet, dann werden 70 bis 80 Prozent der Energie, die von der Antenne ausgesandt werden, vom Kopf absorbiert", erinnert Lai.

Kinder sind verwundbarer

Für Lai sind Kinder im Fall negativer Strahlungsenergie deshalb mehr betroffen als Erwachsene, weil die Schädelknochen im jungen Alter dünner seien und Strahlung deshalb stärker wirke. Gehirntumore entwickelten sich in einem Zeitraum von 30 bis 40 Jahren. Kinder, die man schon in frühen Jahren mit Handystrahlung konfrontiere, seien im Fall negativer Strahlung eine stärker betroffene Risikogruppe.

Frage der Auswirkung noch offen

"Auch wenn wir die Auswirkungen auf die Kinder noch nicht so genau kennen, wäre es besser, die Kinder von diesen Antennen fern zu halten", so Lai - selbst wenn das die Kinder nicht so "cool" fänden.

Forschungslücke in den USA?

Lai beklagt, dass die Forschung über die Auswirkung von Handystrahlung in den Vereinigten Staaten stark eingeschränkt sei. Gezahlt würden Studien zumeist von Mobilfunkbetreibern - mit entsprechenden Ergebnissen. Unabhängige Studien sieht Lai nur noch in Europa verwirklicht.

Unser Leben im Hauptstrahl einer Mobilfunksendeanlage für UMTS und GSM

Mitte November 2003 wurde auf einem Nachbarhaus in 40 m Entfernung und nur 14 m Höhe eine Mobilfunksendeanlage montiert. Schriftlich und auch mündlich wurde uns mehrmals bestätigt, dass die Anlage noch nicht in Betrieb sei.

In der letzten Woche vor Weihnachten fiel uns dann auf, dass unsere Kinder krank aussahen und Augenringe hatten wie bei einem Infekt. Wir dachten noch; gut, dass bald Ferien sind.

Zu Weihnachten hatten wir dann alle keinen rechten Appetit mehr und uns war ständig übel, was wir uns anfangs mit dem erhöhten Verzehr von Süßigkeiten erklärten. Unsere ständige Müdigkeit und Antriebslosigkeit schoben wir auf das relativ späte Zubettgehen und das lange Ausschlafen.

Dann bekam mein Mann plötzlich Probleme mit dem Durchschlafen und Wiedereinschlafen.

Das unser Appetit nachgelassen hatte wurde sichtbar, denn unsere gewöhnliche Spaghettimenge wurde nicht mehr alle und meine ganze Familie hatte über Weihnachten zum Teil mehrere Kilos abgenommen.

Im neuen Jahr bemerkten wir dann zusätzlich noch Kopfschmerzen, die schon früh beim Aufstehen anfingen. Da sagten wir uns, dass der Sendemast doch schon in Betrieb sein muss.

Am 07.01.2004 war ein Artikel in der Sächsischen Zeitung, in dem stand, dass die UMTS Anlage seit dem 16. Dezember 2003 in Betrieb sei.

Später kamen bei meinem Mann sporadische Herzrhythmusstörungen, Herzrasen und erhöhter Blutdruck hinzu. Als ich dann auch eines Morgens mit Herzklopfen und stark erhöhtem Puls aufwachte, sagte ich mir: jetzt reicht es, und wir sind mit unseren Matratzen in die leere Wohnung im Erdgeschoss gezogen, da dort wesentlich geringere Messwerte waren.

Der Schlaf im Erdgeschoss war zwar besser, aber auch nicht so gut wie früher, da Müdigkeit und Kopfschmerzen schon beim Aufstehen vorhanden waren. Deshalb haben wir unsere Schlafplätze ab Mitte Januar in den Keller verlegt.

In den Winterferien konnten wir uns endlich erholen und nach zwei Tagen waren die Kopfschmerzen verschwunden, obwohl im Ferienort guter Handyempfang war. Nach den 14 Tagen Urlaub hofften wir uns so erholt zu haben, dass wir wenigstens die erste Zeit lang keine Probleme haben.

Aber als wir abends zu Hause ankamen, setzten die Kopfschmerzen sofort wieder ein. Am nächsten Morgen war uns dann so übel, dass wir in unserer Küche vor den lecker duftenden Brötchen saßen, aber nichts runter bekamen.

Unser Gesundheitszustand wurde immer schlechter, auch die Kinder klagten mittlerweile nicht nur über ständige Kopfschmerzen sondern auch über Herzschmerzen. Meine Tochter hatte in den letzten vier Monaten nur 100g zugenommen (normal wäre 1-2,5 kg). Hitzewallungen, erhöhter Puls und erhöhter Blutdruck wurden bei mehreren Familienmitgliedern festgestellt.

Wir haben inzwischen bereits im Keller Kopfschmerzen und auch in der Stadt in der Nähe von Mobilfunksendern, was im Frühjahr noch nicht der Fall war. Offensichtlich sind wir schon so stark geschädigt worden, dass uns jetzt auch geringere Strahlungsintensitäten, die hinter der inzwischen angebrachten großflächigen Abschirmung gemessen wurden, Schmerzen und gesundheitliche Störungen bereiten.

Nachdem sogar unsere Krankenkasse bestätigt hat, dass wir alle durch den Betrieb der Mobilfunksendeanlage krank geworden sind und es „keine anerkannte Therapie außer Beendigung der Exposition gibt“ haben wir uns schweren Herzens entschlossen, aus unserem eigenen Haus vorerst auszuziehen. Seit Mitte Dezember wohnen wir jetzt zur Miete und hoffen, dass wir bald wieder zurückziehen können.

Mein ältester Sohn hatte von September bis Dezember 2004 eine Lymphknotenschwellung, die ohne irgendeine Entzündung bestand und ärztlich überwacht wurde. Zu Weihnachten 2004 ca. 10 Tage nach unserem Umzug in eine strahlungsarme Gegend war diese Lymphknotenschwellung verschwunden. Der betreuende Arzt war selbst sehr verblüfft, weil er so etwas noch nicht erlebt hatte und meinte auch, dass Mobilfunksender nicht in Wohngebiete gehören.

Es ist nicht verwunderlich, dass Menschen bei 1-2 V/m krank werden, inzwischen wurden sogar noch wesentlich höhere Feldstärken gemessen. Probleme mit Haarausfall und dünneren Haaren haben wir nun hoffentlich bald nicht mehr.

Der gesamten Familie geht es seit dem Wegzug deutlich besser. Dies sehen uns auch viele an, da bereits nach 2-3 Wochen die fahle Blässe unserer Haut verschwunden war. Auch ist die Gesichtshaut nicht mehr so schlaff.

Wir können nur hoffen, dass keine irreversiblen Schädigungen entstanden sind. Die Verbesserung unseres Gesundheitszustandes wird dokumentiert. Nicht nur die ärztlichen Berater der Krankenkasse haben daran großes Interesse.

Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, dass es politischer Wille ist, dass Menschen derart geschädigt werden dürfen.

Gesundheitsstörungen durch einen Mobilfunksender

Ich wohne mit meinem Mann und unseren beiden Söhnen in Haibach bei Aschaffenburg. Unsere Erfahrung mit den gesundheitlichen Auswirkungen von Mobilfunkanlagen begann im Frühjahr 1999.

Unser damals 10-jähriger Sohn besuchte die vierte Klasse der Grundschule und sollte im nächsten Schuljahr auf das Gymnasium wechseln. Er war zwar kein eifriger und fleißiger Schüler, doch hatte er bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt keinerlei Schulprobleme. Plötzlich, von einem Tag auf den anderen, konnte er fast nicht mehr lesen und die schulischen Leistungen sanken ins Bodenlose.

Da er Brillenträger war, suchten wir zuerst beim Augenarzt Rat. Die Brille wurde um 3,5 Dioptrien verstärkt, ein Kinderpsychiater diagnostizierte eine starke Hyperaktivität und verordnete Ritalin. Im Blindeninstitut, in dem wir unseren Sohn mittlerweile angemeldet hatten, wurde eine optische Wahrnehmungsstörung (Figur-Grundwahrnehmung) festgestellt. Tobias war auch schon seit Wochen keinen Zentimeter mehr gewachsen.

Der plötzliche Beginn der Hyperaktivität und der optischen Wahrnehmungsstörung veranlaßte mich, nach einer Ursache zu suchen. So etwas kommt doch nicht einfach so - ohne Grund. Ich forschte nach Veränderungen im Tagesablauf, im sozialen Umfeld und in der Wohnungseinrichtung. Doch es ließ sich kein Auslöser finden.

So richtete ich mein Augenmerk auf die weitere Umgebung und da fiel mir in ca. 60 Meter Entfernung ein Gebilde auf, das ungefähr zu dem Zeitpunkt errichtet wurde, als die Beschwerden bei Tobias anfingen. Auf Nachfrage bei der Gemeinde erfuhr ich, daß dieses Gebilde eine D1-Mobilfunkantenne sei. Damals wußte ich nichts über die gesundheitlichen Auswirkungen, die Mobilfunkantennen auslösen können. Deshalb holte ich Informationen bei der Bürgerwelle ein. So richtig glauben konnte ich das allerdings nicht, was ich da las. Wenn diese Technik wirklich so schädlich ist, würde der Staat sie doch verbieten, schließlich haben wir ja ein Grundgesetz, das die Körperliche Unversehrtheit garantiert.

Trotzdem ließen wir Tobias für einige Tage bei meiner Mutter übernachten. Die Konzentrationsstörungen gingen zwar leicht zurück, doch war das Ergebnis insgesamt unbefriedigend, so daß wir den Versuch abbrachen. Schon nach einer Nacht zuhause trat eine erneute Verschlechterung ein. Jetzt zog ich mit beiden Kindern über Nacht zu meiner Mutter. In unserem Haus schirmten wir zwei Zimmer, in denen wir uns tagsüber aufhielten, notdürftig mit Abschirmstoffen ab.

Schon nach wenigen Tagen verschwanden bei beiden Kindern und bei mir Kopfschmerzen, Schlafstörungen, ständige Müdigkeit, Herzrasen und Herzstolpern, Wortfindungsstörungen, Pulsen und Pfeifen im Ohr, weiße Blitze in den Augen, Schwindelanfälle, depressive Verstimmung, Augenreizung, Konzentrations- und Gedächtnisstörungen. Erst durch das Verschwinden stellten wir eine Verbindung dieser Symptome mit dem Sender her. Nach 4 bis 6 Wochen schrieb Tobias klassenbeste Arbeiten.

Weil wir den Schlüssel zur Wohnung meiner Mutter vergessen hatten, mußten wir noch einmal in unserem Haus schlafen und sogleich kamen die Beschwerden wieder. Tobias Diktate waren nach dieser einen belastenden Nacht auch in ganz typischer Weise verändert. Er ließ i-Pünktchen, t-Striche und ganze Silben weg. Die Fehlerzahl nahm mit jeder Zeile auffallend zu. Wenn er bei meiner Mutter übernachtet hatte, machte er viel weniger und ganz andere Fehler (Verdopplung, ie oder ss).

Für uns war jetzt sonnenklar: Unsere Krankheiten kommen von diesem Mobilfunksender. Wir schirmten unser Haus für mehrere Zehntausend Euro ab. Unser Sohn wechselte im nächsten Schuljahr auf das Gymnasium statt auf die Sonderschule des Blindeninstituts. Tobias Brille konnte um 1,5 Dioptrien abgeschwächt werden.

Nach einjährigem Wachstumsstillstand ist er auch wieder gewachsen. Übrigens litt auch unser Hamster unter Wachstumsstillstand. Wir mußten den Käfig 4 Monate in der Badewanne stehen lassen, da der Hamster so klein war, daß er durch die Gitterstäbe des Hamsterkäfigs schlüpfen konnte.

Wir waren wahrscheinlich deshalb so krank, weil unsere Strahlenwerte so hoch waren: 5 200 µW/m² pro Quadratmeter allein auf dem Organisationskanal, bei vier Kanälen somit 20 800 µW/m².

Zur Zeit leben wir verbarrikadiert hinter einem Abschirmdraht und Abschirmstoffen. Mein Mann ich ich gehen nur noch kurzzeitig für die notwendige Pflege in den Garten. Unsere Kinder waren schon seit 5 Jahren nicht mehr im Garten. Das ist der Preis für unsere Gesundheit.

March 19 - A global day of protest

March 19, 2005- Today, tens of thousands of people converged on New York City to oppose an illegal war of aggression against the people of Iraq. People drove from as far away as Florida and Minnesota to demand an immediate end to the occupation.

The day began with a rally in Harlem's Marcus Garvey Park. Speakers included Brenda Stokely, President of DC 1707, Nellie Bailey of the Harlem Tenant's Council, and Carl Webb, a member of the Army National Guard who has refused to deploy to Iraq.

After the opening rally, more than 15,000 marched to join thousands already gathered in Central Park. As they marched through Harlem, they were greeted by cheers and applause from the community. People came out of stores and apartments to join the march. Others hung out of their windows and flashed the peace sign or raised their fists.

Speakers at the Central Park Rally included Representative Charles Rangel, New York City Council Members Margarita Lopez and Charles Barron, former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, and attorney Lynne Stewart.

After the Central Park Rally, thousands marched to the Upper East Side mansion of billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg with the slogan, "Fund Cities, Not War!"

The turnout for this demonstration confirms that the antiwar movement has entered into a new phase of organizing against the war. It confirms that the greatest attention must be paid to reaching out to communities most impacted by the war and by the policies of the Bush Administration. These communities are the targets of the budget cuts. They are also targeted by military recruiters, who exploit economic hardship with false promises of opportunity. As a result, the children of these communities are dying disproportionately in Iraq, paying the ultimate price for a policy of greed and empire.

Organizers with the Troops Out Now Coalition plan to continue to protest the war and occupation. On May 1, the Troops Out Now Coalition will join the Million Worker March on the streets of New York City in a rally and march to demand, “Jobs, Not War! Bring the Troops Home Now!”

In addition to the Troops Out Now Demonstration in New York City, there were demonstrations in more than 700 cities throughout the U.S., including major regional demonstrations in Fayetteville, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago.

This weekend saw protests all over the globe. There were demonstrations in Argentina, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Australia, Vietnam, South Korea, Pakistan, Iceland, Ireland, Germany, Cyprus, and many other countries.

Tens of thousands of people marched through central London on Saturday, calling on Prime Minister Tony Blair to get British troops out of Iraq. Protesters marched from Hyde Park Corner past the US embassy to a rally in central London’s Trafalgar Square.

The protesters placed a black cardboard coffin with the slogan “100,000 dead” scrawled across the daffodil-strewn lid against a tree outside the US embassy. As the coffin was laid down, the crowd chanted: “George Bush ... Uncle Sam. Iraq will be your Vietnam.”

In Sweden, protesters filled up Sergel square in downtown Stockholm, chanting: "USA, out of Iraq!"

In Istanbul, an estimated 15,000 people marched, some carrying signs reading "Murderer Bush, get out."

In Poland, which has 1,70 0 troops in Iraq, more than 1,000 marched to the US Embassy in Warsaw, holding banners reading "Pull out from Iraq now" and "Poles back to Poland."

In Athens, about 3,000 trade unionists, members of peace groups, and students brought the city center to a standstill for about three hours as they marched to the US Embassy.

Mercury-based thimerosal, used as a preservative in childhood vaccines until recently, is now being blamed for a host of neurological problems, including autism, ADD, ADHD, and other learning disabilities. The number of children with these problems can vary greatly depending on who you listen to. Some experts say there are about 800,000 learning disabled children in the US, while others put the number as high as eight million, according to Dr. Jay Gordon. Dr. Gordon is a California pediatrician who has worked as a consultant for CBS on children's programming. He was ABC’s medical correspondent for the Home Show for five years and has appeared on Good Morning America to discuss vaccines. On his website, appropriately called Dr. Jay Gordon, he addresses many of the issues related to vaccine policies in the US. Granted, there are plenty of research studies to document the fact that some vaccines are necessary to protect against serious diseases. However, there is very little data to support the methods that are used to vaccinate children in the US....

More than a billion people worldwide lack access to clean and safe water -- with devastating effects: 12 million deaths annually and millions of others struck by diseases associated with the lack of sanitary water. Last year, more people likely died from lack of water than from armed conflicts.

Today is World Water Day and the launch of the United Nation's international water decade, aimed at promoting the UN Millennium Goal of halving the number of people without access to clean and safe water. This is not the first time the UN has made bombastic declarations about water for everyone. It did so in 1977, when heads of state and governments of the member states promised to provide their populations with water. In fact the first international water decade actually took place in the 1980s, to little practical effect...

A new poll showing that Catholics are backing off support for the death penalty was no surprise to U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, an outspoken conservative Catholic, who says he has been re-examining his own view. He has not become an abolitionist, and he believes church teaching against the death penalty carries less weight than its longer-standing opposition to abortion. But he questions what he once unquestioningly supported. 'I felt very troubled about cases where someone may have been convicted wrongly. DNA evidence definitely should be used when possible,' he said. 'I agree with the pope that in the civilized world ... the application of the death penalty should be limited. I would definitely agree with that. I would certainly suggest there probably should be some further limits on what we use it for.' He spoke in a brief phone interview after the U.S. Catholic bishops launched a renewed push against the death penalty...
