It is of no surpise in light of research papers on adverse effects of EMF on trees, copy of Dr Alfonso Balmori research paper above that we are likely to see more species affected.

A deadly tree disease dubbed 'sudden oak death' has been discovered in West Lancashire. Phytophthora, a potentially lethal agent which can infect shrubs and trees has been given as the official reason behind the felling of trees in Ormskirk. Californian strains of the pathogen have been responsible for the destruction of tens of thousands of Oak trees in America. Symptoms of the disease were first recorded in Germany and the Netherlands in 1993. It has since been found in Belgium, Denmark, France, Spain and Sweden. The first finding in the UK was recorded in Suzex in 2002. But some residents are unconvinced the destruction was justified and that maybe the Authority had been ill advised. Tony Rawsthorne said 'if the Local Authority has confirmation that Phytophera is now affetcing alder species, then West Lancashire is unique in the world'.

Tofani et al. (1986) exposed pregnant rats to 27.12 MHz continuous waves at an intensity of 100 µW / cm2........... There was also a change in the sex ratio, with more males born to rats that had been irradiated from the time of conception (Firstenberg, 1997).

These results are similar to that obtained by MOORHOUSE and MACDONALD (2005) in water voles:

1. Radio-tracking is used ubiquitously in studies of wild vertebrates, a fundamental assumption being that tagged animals do not significantly differ, behaviourally or otherwise, from untagged animals.

2. We studied two populations of water voles Arvicola terrestris: one population was livetrapped from April to September for 2 years (2000, 2001) and then concurrently radiotracked and trapped in a third year (2002). The second population was trapped only during 2002.

3. During 2002, a substantial decline in female numbers in the radio-collared population was recorded, apparently resulting from a male skew in the sex ratios of offspring born to this population. The mean numbers of males and females born during trapping only were 25•7 (SD 2•1) and 29•0 (SD 7•0), respectively. Recruits to the radio-tracked population were skewed heavily in favour of males (43 : 13).

4. Both hypotheses commonly invoked to explain mammalian sex-ratio manipulation refer to the condition of mothers. The altered sex ratio resulted from a 48% decrease in numbers of females born, a decrease similar to the proportion (0•49) of the female population that was collared. No similar decline in male births occurred. This suggests that radio-collaring of females caused male-skewed sex ratios.

5. Synthesis and applications

We conclude that the observed decline in female numbers resulted from male-skewed recruitment sex ratios due to the attachment of radio-collars to female water voles. These results question the assumption that the use of radio-collars does not fundamentally affect the biology of collared water voles.

Wühler im Elektrosmog

Sendehalsbänder scheinen das Leben der untersuchten Tiere zu beeinflussen.

Wenn Große Wühlmäuse per Sendehalsband verfolgt werden, ändert sich das Geschlechterverhältnis bei neugeborenen Nagern. Das haben britische Forscher herausgefunden. Sie glauben, dass dieser Effekt eine Folge von Stress sein könnte. Möglicherweise werden auch andere Tierarten durch die Sendetechnik beeinflusst, berichtet das Wissenschaftsmagazin Nature.

Der Biologe Tom Moorhouse von der Universität Oxford hat die Wühlmäuse seit mehreren Jahren untersucht. Um etwas über Wanderungen der Tiere zu erfahren, hat er einige mit Sendern ausgestattet. Es zeigte sich, dass daraufhin der Anteil weiblichen Nachwuchses um 48 Prozent gefallen ist. Moorhouse glaubt, die Sender haben die Tiere gestresst.

Unter natürlichen Bedingungen werden mehr Männchen geboren, wenn es beispielsweise wenig Futter gibt. Die Männchen verlassen dann die Gegend und erhöhen so die Chancen für die zurück Gebliebenen. Stress durch Sender könnte eine ähnliche Wirkung haben wie Stress durch Futterknappheit.

Auch bei anderen Tierarten gibt es Hinweise, dass die technische Ausrüstung einen Einfluss auf die Partnerwahl oder Nahrungssuche hat: so haben auf diese Art markierte Kaiserpinguine Schwierigkeiten beim Schwimmen und Fischen. Panda-Bären dürfen gar nicht erst mit Sendern versehen werden – nur für den Fall, dass sie die Tiere doch gefährden könnten.

»Folgen durch Elektrosmog müssen untersucht werden«

Gesundheitliche Beeinträchtigung: Die Ärzte-Initiative Bamberger Appell fordert die Verbannung von Mobilfunkantennen aus Wohngebieten. Ein Gespräch mit Dr. Cornelia Waldmann-Selsam

F: Sie organisieren am Wochenende ein internationales Symposium in Bamberg über Gesundheitsgefährdungen durch den Mobilfunk. Bisher hieß es doch immer, Mobilfunk sei ungefährlich.

Wir haben in den letzten Monaten in ganz Oberfranken Menschen befragt und untersucht, die im Umfeld von Mobilfunkstationen leben. Dabei und bei Messungen mußten wir zu unserer Erschütterung feststellen, daß viele dieser Menschen erhebliche Beschwerden haben und zum Teil schwer krank sind.

F: Was hat Sie zu der Studie motiviert?

Die Initiative Bamberger Appell wurde im vergangenen Sommer gegründet, nachdem Pläne bekannt wurden, in Bamberg, wie in anderen Städten auch, in Wohngebieten zahlreiche neue Mobilfunkantennen aufzustellen. Daraufhin haben die Anwohner bei ihren Hausärzten um Rat gefragt und um Hilfe gebeten. Mehrere Ärzte haben sich daraufhin mit den potentiellen Gefahren durch Elektrosmog intensiver befaßt. Aufgrund unserer jüngsten Erkenntnisse plädieren wir dringend dafür, von einem weiteren Ausbau des Mobilfunknetzes abzusehen, weil zuwenig über mögliche gesundheitliche Beeinträchtigungen bekannt ist. Ein weiterer Ausbau ist auch nicht notwendig, weil es ein flächendeckendes Netz bereits gibt.

F: Welche Folgen könnten durch Elektrosmog auftreten?

Menschen, die nahe solcher Antennen wohnen, leiden vermehrt unter Tinnitus, häufigen Infekten oder Herz-Rhythmus-Störungen. Oft können sie nachts nicht schlafen, haben Kopfschmerzen, die Kinder haben Konzentrationsschwierigkeiten. Das alles ist noch unerforscht, stellt sich aber als ein neues Krankheitsbild für uns Ärzte dar. Mittlerweile haben wir in Zusammenarbeit mit Technikern Messungen in fast 400 Häusern durchgeführt. Dabei haben wir festgestellt, daß sich schon bei 50 Mikrowatt pro Quadratmeter gesundheitliche Störungen einstellen. Der gesetzliche Grenzwert liegt derzeit bei 4,5 bis zehn Mikrowatt pro Quadratmeter.

F: Aber richtig aussagekräftig wird eine solche Messung doch erst, wenn man Vergleichswerte von Haushalten hat, die nicht nahe Funkantennen liegen.

Solche Vergleichsmessungen haben wir auch durchgeführt, und sie haben unsere Befürchtungen über negative gesundheitliche Auswirkungen bestätigt. Dort, wo keine Strahlung meßbar war, hatten die Leuten auch keine der typischen gesundheitlichen Beeinträchtigungen. Der Verdacht auf eine negative Wirkung des Elektrosmog erhärtet sich auch durch eine weitere Beobachtung: Wenn Menschen mit den typischen Beschwerden sich eine Weile nicht zu Hause aufhalten, verschwinden die Symptome in der Regel. Für uns ist das ein starkes Indiz für den räumlichen Zusammenhang.

F: Es gibt Parallelen zur Häufung von Leukämiefällen in der Umgebung von Atomanlagen im schleswig-holsteinischen Geesthacht. Die dortige Landesregierung hat sämtliche Untersuchungsergebnisse zurückgewiesen. Was fordern Sie von der Politik?

Wir drängen darauf, daß an diesen Standorten gezielt der Gesundheitszustand der Menschen untersucht wird. In Anbetracht der eindeutigen Hinweise ist es völlig unverständlich, daß dies noch nicht geschehen ist. Es gibt zahlreiche Studien, die unsere Beobachtungen untermauern. In Deutschland aber bleiben die Behörden weitgehend untätig.

F: Von wem sind vergleichbare Studien erstellt worden?

Schon vor Jahren haben Ärzte des Freiburger Appells das Phänomen Elektrosmog untersucht. Wir haben zu den Kolleginnen und Kollegen Kontakt aufgenommen. Sie hatten ähnliche Beobachtungen gemacht wie wir und diese auch immer den zuständigen Ministerien gemeldet. Geschehen ist aber auch in diesem Fall nichts.

F: Wenn sich Ihr Verdacht bestätigen würde, dann wären ganze Industriezweige betroffen. Könnte das nicht ein Grund für die Zurückhaltung sein?

Wir würden diesen Verdacht nicht aussprechen, wenn er sich nicht aufdrängen würde. Die untersuchenden Ärzte halten schließlich auch eine Zunahme von Tumoren für möglich. Entsprechende Beobachtungen gibt es schon jetzt. Aus einigen Teilen Oberfrankens erreichen uns alarmierende Hinweise von Medizinern, denen eine Häufung von unterschiedlichsten Tumoren im Umfeld von Mobilfunkanlagen auffällt.

F: Wie kann man sich schützen?

Auf dem Kongreß werden wir eine Resolutionsentwurf vorlegen, in dem gefordert wird, daß diese Mobilfunkantennen aus Gebieten, in denen Menschen wohnen, arbeiten und sich dauerhaft aufhalten, wieder entfernt werden. Das ist die einzig akzeptable Schlußfolgerung.

Ultrastructure of the medium sized "spiny" neuron in rat dorsal-lateral caudate-putamen was assessed after administration of 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NP) and exposure to pulsed microwaves. Sprague-Dawley male rats were given two daily intraperitoneal doses of 0 or 10 mg/kg 3-NP and 1.5 h after each dose were exposed to microwave radiation at a whole body averaged specific absorption rate (SAR) of 0 (sham exposure), 0.6, or 6 W/kg for 30 min. Microwave exposure consisted of 1.25 GHz radiation delivered as 5.9 micros pulses with repetition frequency 10 Hz. Tissue samples taken 2-3 h after the second sham or microwave exposure showed no injury with light microscope methods. Blinded qualitative assessment of ultrastructure of randomly selected neurons from the same samples did reveal differences.

Subsequent detailed, quantitative measurements showed that, when followed by sham exposure, administration of 3-NP significantly increased endoplasmic reticulum (ER) intracisternal width, ER area density, and nuclear envelope thickness. Microwave exposure at 6 W/kg alone also significantly increased these measures. Exposure of 3-NP treated animals at 6 W/kg significantly increased effects of 3-NP on ultrastructure. Although exposure at 0.6 W/kg alone did not affect ultrastructure measures, exposure of 3-NP treated animals at 0.6 W/kg reduced the effects of 3-NP. We concluded that 3-NP changed neuronal ultrastructure and that the microwave exposures used here changed neuronal ultrastructure in ways that depended on microwave SAR and neuron metabolic status. The apparent cancellation of 3-NP induced changes by exposure to pulsed microwaves at 0.6 W/kg indicated the possibility that such exposure can protect against the effects of mitochondrial toxins on the nervous system.

Mobilfunk macht senil ?

Eine neue Studie des schwedischen Professors Leif Salford dürfte der Mobilfunk-Industrie schwer im Magen liegen. Der Wissenschaftler hat möglicherweise Hinweise auf bisher unbeachtete gesundheitliche Folgen der mobiler Geräte. Es besteht seiner Meinung nach die Gefahr, dass eine ganze Generation frühzeitig senil wird.

Gemeint sind die heute jugendlichen Nutzer solcher Geräte, die angesichts immer neuer technologischer Entwicklungen in einem "Meer von Mikrowellen zu Ertrinken drohen". Bisher gibt es zwar keine Nachweise für eine - beispielsweise krebserregende - Auswirkung dieser Geräte. Doch Salford und seine Kollegen haben nach 15 Jahren eine neue Wirkungsform entdeckt.

Demnach macht die Bestrahlung die Barriere zwischen Blutbahnen und Hirn transparenter, so dass es zu einem Eindringen des Proteins Albumin kommen kann. Dieses Eindringen kann nach ihren neuesten Ergebnissen mit Schädigungen des Hirns in Verbindung gebracht werden. Langzeituntersuchungen stehen aber noch aus und es ist denkbar, dass die durch das Eiweiß geschädigten Neuronen sich selbst heilen.

Der Wissenschaftler sieht aber die Gefahr, dass die Neuronen dazu nicht in der Lage sind. Neuronen, die sonst eher bei Menschen über 60 Jahren Probleme verursachen, könnten dann unter dem Einfluss des Proteins schon bei 30jährigen zu Senilität führen.

Die freiwillige Bestrahlung des Gehirns mit Mikrowellen mobiler Telefone bezeichnet er daher als das größte human-biologische Experiment der Menschheit.

I knew Neil [Cherry] very well, a real giant. I learned alot from him, and saw alot of unpublished stuff, such as Motorola's study showing DNA breaks, like as Lai and Singh... Neil articles are real goldmines, and reference for any argument you can think of, not just drop of melatonin.

Let me explain briefly the short term efects: I am talking just on non thermal effects:

1. In exposure to EMF neurons loose calcium ions (=Ca2+), then, neurotransmitters (whose production depends on these ions) drop.
What we feel, may be loss of short term memory, confusion, headaches etc. Melatonin level drops too, so insomnia is on the way... Thromboxane causes tiny clots that may elevate blood pressure a little, but may also block some narrow vessels. These changes are reversible, and as soon as exposure is terminated, body cells would come back to normal in minutes to hours. Some damage to brain cells remains, as exhibited in rats by Hold et al (1998) in the UK, published in an article by James Clark and David Derbyshire in the Daily News, on July 16, 1998.

2. Peripheral blood is by definition in the extremities, but no other places in the body are safe from clots that may stuck somewhere in narrow vessels, brain included.

3. Protooncogens are genes involved in cell division (such as myc, fos and many others). Normally they are expressed when the cell is going to divide. If the gene is induced to express itself by exposure to EMF, on and on, it may enhance mutaions in it, and eventually may loose control, or it may lose its promoter (control part of the gene) by a reak, then it will push to non stop cell divisions, namely, cancer. It was a surprise that EMF could induce expression of such genes. When a protogene is (unnecessarily) expressed, it may get more mutauions, some of which would not be repaired, and be on the way to loose control, i.e. become an oncogene.

If you just visit Kensworth, damages would be (mostly) recovered, but the longer you stay there, the longer you are exposed, and the chance is going up to get more damage in genes accumulated. Damage in genes stays. if DNA is damaged, cell division is arrested ( by gene named p53 (of the tumour supressing genes) until DNA is repaired. If damage is beyond repair this gene would lead the cell to a planned suicide (apoptosis).

4. Protooncogenes are genes, i.e. part of the DNA, found on different chromosomes (want a picture of them ?), every gene has its promoter, and structural coding part. In the promoters there are sequences that react to EMF, as published by a team of Columbia U, in NYC (Lin et al 2001).

I am studying the activities of about 30 of the oncogenes, but there are many more (I have the whole table). They code for proteins that are the active in cell division. There are internet collection of the mutants found in cancer patients. You can get them and even rotate them and see the 3D structure of their proteins.

Last but not least: In exposure of human cells to 2.4 µW/cm2 Marinelli et al (Nov. 2004) got DNA breaks in 2h. About 5 µW/cm2 was carcinogenic in humans (experienced by staff and family members Americans in their embassy in Moscow in the "Cold War" see Project Pandora).

The thermal emissions allowed for human exposure by ICNIRP or higher than that by NRPB has nothing in common with reality.
