Five-year cancer study on mobiles
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=430162&in_page_id=1770

My comments to the Mail online

Perhaps Prof Challis should read Dr George Carlo's book. "Cell phones, invisible hazards in the wireless age" [ http://omega.twoday.net/stories/418854/ ]. It details the results of his 5 year investigation heading up the US phone industry research programme between 1993 and 1999. He had 200 scientists working for him and completed 56 studies at a cost of $28 million. His book details the industry's reaction when they found evidence for genetic damage and an increase in risk of brain tumour as a result of mobile phone use. Dr Carlo also advocates that wireless computers whould not be put in schools because of the risk of genetic damage to children from the microwave radiation constantly emitted by the laptops and wireless access points.

BEWARE THE HEADLINES ONCE AGAIN

There has been an interesting article circulating in the past couple of days
( http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-2556768,00.html -- Cancer study ordered into mobile phones http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-2556768,00.html ). And once again, what you read on the surface betrays what is below the surface.

When you read the article behind this link, please understand that the mobile phone industry is behind it. In the UK, the mobile phone mast issue is gaining a great deal of momentum. Whenever that happens, the political solution involves putting some money into a study -- a study that will take years to complete -- to assuage the public concern. The tactic is part of the industry's overall strategy to "buy time". With the mobile phone health risk issue, this goes back to the very early days of the WTR when the industry funded our research program, in their mind, "as an insurance policy to buy time". With research going on, the argument can be made in public that the "jury is still out" and from the industry's perspective, "the heat is off". In this case, note specifically that the studies mentioned at the end of the article -- a very selected few from the numerous studies now in the open literature -- are only the studies funded by the industry, with results that mute the present day concern. Don't fall for it.

More research is always a good thing. But, research does not help people who are being exposed to dangerous ICRW (Information-Carrying Radio Waves) today. Research always should be joined with surveillance of high risk groups and the implementation of primary, secondary and tertiary interventions in those high risk groups as appropriate.

DID THIS PHONE MAST GIVE ME CANCER?

DAVID JOHNSON

10:28 - 08 November 2006

Families living within feet of a phone mast say it is to blame for 27 deaths and illnesses in their streets in the past 13 years.

Now residents are spending hundreds of pounds trying to protect themselves from radiation.

They are lining their lofts with tin foil, putting up metal mesh curtains and installing specialist windows.

They want the 82-foot Orange-owned antenna in Shooters Hill, Stoke-on-Trent - which collects and distributes signals from other masts - to be torn down.

They say the microwaves from the mast are potentially lethal.

Mother-of-two Karen Owens, pictured, aged 40, who lives 300 feet from the mast, has just had a mastectomy after contracting cancer.

She said: "Since I was diagnosed it has always been in the back of my mind that it could be connected to the mast."

Protesters have recorded brain haemorrhages, tumours and cancers in the area, as well as strokes, irregular heartbeats, epilepsy, high blood pressure and sleeplessness.

Some medical experts believe these conditions could be linked to certain types of microwave radiation.

Chris Cornes has used about 50 rolls of tin foil to line her loft and bed headboard after monitoring equipment showed one side of her home has much more microwave radiation than the other.

Mrs Cornes, whose husband died from cancer four years ago, said: "We only use the lounge at the opposite end of the house.

"When you hear that meter giving out all that noise because of the microwaves it is detecting, what would you do?

"When you sit on my grass you also get all the rays, so we have to avoid that as well. I think it's disgusting we have to live like this. The mast should come down."

Jean Hopkins, who lives in Cherrywood Grove, was suffering from headaches until spending £1,000 on precautions.

Mrs Hopkins said: "We've lined the loft with 40 or 50 rolls of aluminum foil.

"Initially we put it over the windows at the back because we thought it was the only way of stopping the radiation.

"We then bought these special metal mesh curtains which cost about £40 a square metre and we have those up at all six of the back windows. They are drawn all the time."

Mrs Hopkins added: "I'm not a hypochondriac and I don't make things up. Residents shouldn't have to live like this. It destroys your quality of life."

Pensioner Alfred Oakes, who lives close to the mast on Sandon Road, believes his skin cancer could be connected to waves from the mast. He said: "I think the mast should be taken down."

Should the mast be removed?

Global warming through use of mobiles

I am very surprised to note that there has been no mention of the recent french study, which used a satellite to measure the heating effetcs in the ionosphere due to e-smog in the atmosphere. I have tried twice to send the information, firstly through a link to the website and second as an attachment. In both cases the server rejected them. However, the information can be found on Next-Up News and it is under the DEMETER satellite, which I am sure a search of the Next-Up site will bring up the required news. They claim that this is the major cause of global warming and would certainly account for the fact that researchers looking into the greenhouse gas effects cannot explain why the rate of global warming is exceeding their predictions when looking into the effects of greenhouse gases.

We are all concentrating on the potential adverse health effects from exposure to microwaves, but here is another very important effect. Global warming is currently high on the agenda for most governments, who are stressing the need for us all to conserve energy and thus reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere. If the french studies are correct, then all efforts to reduce carbon emissions could be in vain as the heating effect from microwaves and EMF's in the atmosphere would continue the heating process.

Kind regards to all,

Dennis Cannon

Brain tumour cluster in video cameramen at BBC Pebble Mill

17/9/06 From the on the wires

THE BBC was at the centre of a cancer scare last night after six cameramen who worked at the Pebble Mill studios were found to have brain tumours.

Experts fear that radiation from video camera viewfinders may have caused the six men, who had been employed at the Birmingham centre, to develop tumours.

Worried bosses fired off an urgent memo requesting the names of other staff suffering from similar complaints, even if they were no longer working for the corporation.

Equipment

The memo, sent out by health and safety official John Howcroft, read: "Around six ex-cameramen have developed brain tumours. "This number seems too high to be a coincidence and preliminary discussions are focusing on radiation from viewfinders as a possible cause. "We need to determine how widespread this problem is. "If any of you are aware of camera operators with the condition, could you send me all the information you have at the earliest opportunity." The six workers all worked at the now defunct Pebble Mill TV complex. The corporation has since moved into Birmingham's new Mailbox shopping mall site.

But further inquiries have been ordered because identical camera equipment has been used for years at other BBC studios across the country.

High levels of radiation emitted from powerful electronics can damage the brain but a TV camera viewfinder normally emits only low, safe levels.

One radiation expert said last night: "There is a link between exposure to radiation and tumours but the levels emitted by a TV camera would, in normal circumstances, be too low. "If cameras are linked to these cases then something has gone seriously wrong." Radiation can cause tumours by disrupting the genetic make-up of biological cells, making them more susceptible to aggressive cancers.

A BBC spokesman last night played down any possible links between electronic equipment and cancer. "We have found no link between camera equipment and the incidence of brain tumours but we are asking any concerned staff to come forward," he said. Mr Howcroft declined to comment on his department's memo.

Inquiry into BBC cluster of brain tumours

HEALTH and safety officials are investigating a cluster of brain tumours among cameramen who worked at the Pebble Mill studios in Birmingham. The cases sparked fears that radiation from video camera viewfinders may be linked to the tumours. However, the BBC played down the concerns, saying it had investigated and found no link between equipment and brain-tumour risk. Last week, John Howcroft, a health and safety official for the Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematograph and Theatre Union, sent a memo to staff about the brain tumour cases at the old studios. It read: “This number seems too high to be a coincidence and preliminary discussions are focusing on radiation from viewfinders as a possible cause.”

Comments

1. Robert, Kirriemuir / 3:53pm 18 Sep 2006 Observation like this does not surprise me. I purchase one of those TFT monitors and discovered that it was rapidly affecting my eyesight when I could feel the strain on my eyes accompanied by dullish headaches and double vision. On changing back to the CRT model those problems dispersed. Whether the problem was due to the TFT technology or the make of the one I possessed I am unable to say but, of course, I am wondering how many others are affected and what affect this technology is having on viewers.

2. Douglas, Bathgate / 12:46am 19 Sep 2006 If the powers that be won’t acknowledge the clusters of cancers around electricity pylons and sub stations I’m afraid the camera ops are on a hiding to nothing.
