Mast Mystery

With residents fighting phone masts in Uckfield and Dyke Road Avenue, Hove, readers might be interested to know about the serious health threats they pose.

Evidence of harm from masts continues to flood in. Mast Sanity ( http://www.mastsanity.org ) details 19 ill health clusters on its website among populations living up to 300 metres from phone masts, which "is intended to be illustrative rather than definitive".

A random example reads:

"West Midlands; 5 breast cancers, low white cell blood counts, nosebleeds, growths, rashes, immune problems, electrical hypersensitivity, hormone deficiency, numerous abnormal/precancerous smear tests, persistent viral infections, headaches, fatigue. Mast erected 1994. Many other symptoms/cases. Many residents say conditions improve when away from home for at least a week".

Cancer, leukaemia, brain tumours, strokes and many lesser conditions appear repeatedly in the list.

In 2003, Dutch Government Research showed that 3G masts could cause symptoms in people nearby, including nauseousness, headaches and dizziness.

Worryingly, the study was limited to several minutes exposure to radiation 30 times less powerful than some of our 3G masts may put out day when live.

Cell areas for 3G are much smaller than current 2G ones so masts have to be closer together.

In addition, operators seem to be targeting residential areas so masts will have to be close to homes. They are also trying to get 100% coverage across the UK.

I believe a real study into the effects of existing masts on the UK population would be shocking beyond description.

What 3G portends for the future doesn't bear thinking about.

The mobile phone users have brought this plague on themselves (and on us)

Argus letter:

Waste of time

FOLLOWING Gary Kemps letter (The Argus Aug 31) about G3 cellphone masts, we have just been through the most frustrating experience of objecting to one erected two doors away from us in New Church Road. All the form filling and meetings were a complete waste of time.

In spite of the full support of our local MP Celia Barlow it seems little can stop these masts from being put up - no doubt this is the power of commercial money raising its head.

It seems they do not actually need planning permission, even though this mast is directly opposite a new nursery catering for kids up to five years old.

It seems Government advice to avoid such locations are only guidelines and not obligatory. So what use are such guidelines? (Er..so are Gov't guidelines to ignore health concerns but these are regarded as law by planners)

As far as potential illnesses resulting from these masts, by the time they appear it will be too late.

The phone company directors will no doubt be sunning themselves on their yachts, alongside retired gov't ministers, and local kids will be travelling to Poland to have their leukaemia treated because the NHS is too busy to treat them.

Author of letter was Dr M Boyask

Gary

She is right is a sad way. If no sites are given then the antennas will come to lamposts and street furniture where they do not need permission, even under GPDO.

The real problem are the mobile phone users. Latest data show about 55% of all mobile phone calls in the UK are made from home.

Therfore many masts are needed near homes in order to cope with the call traffic.

Rather than campaign about the masts, campaign to stop people using their mobiles at and near their homes and schools. That would remove the need for over half of the masts in the UK and about 90% of those near to homes.

The mobile phone users have brought this plague on themselves (and on us!).

More and more people are removing their land-line connection and subscribing to a mobile phone service only.

Church antennae & leukaemia

Awful news...

You may remember (esp Sandi who helped me immensely) that I was fighting QS4 in April/May, who wanted to put six antennae on the Church my daughter attends, and that my friend had just moved down the road from.

Permission was granted (despite letters to Planning) at 'officer level' so residents didn't even get a say in the matter.

My friend rang me this morning to tell me that one of her neighbours (who lives 180 metres away) was told yesterday that she has developed leukaemia (apparently in the last week) and is going into hospital today for further tests and chemo today. It's just horrible.

I've emailed the agent to find out exactly when the installation was switched on - I'm not mentioning my friends neighbour at the moment.

I'm really not sure what to do - I was wondering if it might be worth getting the signal strengths etc properly documented... My friend (and I) feel that the family should be informed, not least for the sake of the lady's young children, but she is understandably loathe to upset them further at this stage, while the news is still sinking in.

I've haven't gone into too many specifics on this public forum, but would certainly appreciate any ideas and suggestions. My email is ashields_at_onetel.net

Thanks - Angie

Cancer Clusters, Our Children & Mobile Telephone Masts

We have produced a CD-ROM entitled "Cancer Clusters, Our Children & Mobile Telephone Masts" - A Presentation By Dr. John Walker 3rd July 2006 which also contains the GRAM leaflets and useful web links. It auto plays when you put it into a PC running windows, and should work with MACs etc. They have made an impact on local councillors and an MP or two already.

We would like to make this available as an "ISO" i.e. CD-ROM image, but our website would die under the weight and/or cost us a fortune, since the image is about 570 MB in size!

If anyone out there on the MS mailing list has a HUGE amount of bandwidth available to them would you let us know if you would be willing to host it?

If not, we'll have to add a payment option to pay us (at more or less cost) for our bandwidth use in hosting it at the http://nomasts.org.uk website. We have burnt off and given away dozens so far, but with a make-or-break Informal Hearing in just over 2 weeks time we can't do this for everyone. The disc contains installation instructions to be printed out as an accompanying letter if necessary, plus the label file to allow the CD label to be printed, so it's fully self-documented!

So, can anybody help with bandwidth, please?

Best wishes,

Martin,

With one in ten addicted to their mobile phone, is it the tobacco industry all over again?

http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/tobacco_industry_all_over_again.doc

--------

Parallels:

The tobacco conspiracy

Judge Kessler asked that the statistics not obscure what the case was really about.

"It is about an industry, and in particular these defendants, that survives and profits from selling a highly addictive product which causes diseases that lead to a staggering number of deaths per year, an immeasurable amount of human suffering and economic loss, and a profound burden on our national health-care system. Defendants have known many of these facts for at least 50 years or more.

"Despite that knowledge, they have consistently, repeatedly, and with enormous skill and sophistication, denied these facts to the public, to the Government and to the public health community. Moreover, in order to sustain the economic viability of their companies, (the) defendants have denied that they marketed and advertised their products to children under the age of 18 and to young people between the ages of 18 and 21 in order to ensure an adequate supply of replacement smokers, as older ones fall by the wayside through death, illness or cessation of smoking.

"In short, (the) defendants have marketed and sold their lethal product with zeal, with deception, with a single-minded focus on their financial success and without regard for the human tragedy or social costs that success exacted."

Why we are so concerned about Mobile Telephone Masts

http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/why_we_are_so_concerned.pdf

Where are the EMF Project details?

I am unable to find the EMF Project or the new Radiation and Environmental Health Unit in the overall WHO accounts circulated earlier (see earlier emails, below for link).

The extract below is from a WHO EMF project annual report. I had heard that the EMF Project Accounts were not included in the WHO Accounts and this does seem to be the case. Repaccholi has them done by the Royal Adelaide Hospital Finance Office, I have been told. I have never been able to see a copy. This seems scandelous to me.

Andrew Selous MP seems to have been sent an overall set of WHO Accounts that does not include the EMF Project Accounts. This needs to be challenged. I think I smell some rotton flesh. Andrew should asked where the EMF Project details are within the Accounts sent to him and also ask for further detail just for the EMF Project. I don't think he has been sent anything relevant, yet.

Extract from: THE INTERNATIONAL EMF PROJECT PROGRESS REPORT 2002-2003

http://www.who.int/entity/peh-emf/publications/reports/en/ProgressReport2002_2003.pdf

Funding over the past year there have been questions raised as to the funding sources of the EMF Project. A summary of funding sources and conditions are given below. There are very strict requirements for WHO to receive funds for extrabudgetary projects, such as the EMF Project. WHO can receive funds from industry (preferably from industry associations) only after review and approval by WHO's Legal office. A special WHO committee provides further review of funding from industry. All contributions and accounting are strictly audited by WHO and RAH. The EMF Project has adhered to all the requirements placed on it by WHO and will continue to do so until the Project concludes.

Personnel and structure in view of the new importance in radiation within WHO, a new Unit was created called Radiation and Environmental Health, effective January 2002. This unit has the responsibility for all WHO activities related to ionizing and non-ionizing radiations (including the International EMF Project) and is directed by Dr. Michael Repacholi. Dr Leeka Kheifets joined WHO in June 2001 to head the radiation studies program. After fulfilment of her commitment of two years Leeka has resigned and will be moving back to the US. We have greatly benefited from Leeka’s scientific and management expertise and will continue working with her on the project. We are currently recruiting for her replacement. Dr Larry Goldstein, a biologist, joined WHO in February 2002 and is continuing the health risk assessment process. In addition, Dr Emilie van Deventer works 80% for the EMF Project. Emilie is a professor in electrical engineering and, as part of her duties, she responds to the large number of enquiries that the project receives each week.

Best wishes for a good conclusion to your investigations.

Why we have more and more base-stations and masts

The UK public are spending FAR too much on mobile and mobile phone calls.

That is what is requiring and funding all the masts! The public (collectively "us") are funding this plague.

This message neeeds to be got out and taken in by people who do not want to live close to a base station. Every mobile call made or received means that another base station or extra transmitt channels are likely to appear close to that place (your home?).

Mobile phone use now contributes over £10,000,000,000 per year in taxes to the UK Government (2004/2005 figure from an O2 report) - that is money mobile users are paying to support the government. There is another £27,200,000,000 paid into the coffers of the telecomms industry by the public and corporate users.

Extract from Feb 2006 Ofcom Report: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/research/cm/feb06_report/comms_mkt.pdf

Telecoms

• Based on data supplied to Ofcom by operators, retail revenues from all telecoms services in the 12 months to 30 September 2005 were £37.2 billion – over 6% higher than in the previous year

• In the year to 30 September 2005, fixed-line revenues fell to £10.3 billion – down by 9% compared with the previous 12 months – while revenues from mobile communications grew by 16% to £13.6 billion

• At the end of September 2005, Ofcom’s research showed that there were 62.5 million mobile subscriptions – a figure that is higher than the total UK population. Further consumer research by Ofcom showed that around 80% of UK adults (some 40 million) use mobile services, suggesting that a significant number of people now have two or more mobile subscriptions

9.10: 3G subscriber base showing steady growth
The number of 3G mobile subscriptions continues to grow, and we estimate that there were around 4 million in the UK at the end of September 2005 (Figure 53).

This is an issue that Mast Sanity needs to campaign on if we seriously want to make any real difference to the number of masts and their siting.

Everyone should minimise their mobile calls to really important (and short!) ones only and always try to use a wired land-line phone for most phone calls.

Remember, according to the Hardell et al studies, over ten years of mobile phone use, even at 1 call per day(!) more than doubles the risk of brain cancer. More use brings some brain tumours up to about 4-fold more likely to develop. And that is only brain cancer. We believe that there are many other adverse systemic health effects from regular exposure to such microwaves.

Think of that if you allow your child or grand-child a mobile phone. Remember that current UK Government and UK Dept Health official advice is that children and young people under 16 should only use a mobile phone in an emergency. They have covered their backs. It will be the parent's fault if their children develop serious problems through mobile phone use before the age of 16. They may be actually paying to harm their children. Is that a lottery YOU are prepared to pay and play with your children's health?

It has often amazed me how many anti-phonemast campaigners allow (and often pay for!) their children of 16 and under to have and use a mobile phone.

Powerwatch will soon be publishing some interactive graphs of mobile phone use and brain cancer studies.

--------

Thank you for this summary Alasdair. I fully agree that it is only through the obsessive use of mobile phones that the need for the masts continues to grow. I am sure we have all seen evidence of this behaviour in people around us (including family and friends) - the inability to put the phone down! I was in a cafe in Burton on Trent last week when a woman and two boys (aged approx 10 and 12 yrs) - both staring blankly at their mobile screens - sat at a table opposite. When their food arrived the woman told the boys to switch off their mobiles. The younger one did so - but the older boy did not - his was left on the table still switched on. I believe this to be compulsive behaviour caused by the effect of the phone emissions.

It appears, from recent news reports, that even the Queen finds it difficult to leave her phone in her pocket without repeatedly taking it out to look at it - and we have heard over the last couple of days the problems Charles and his staff have experienced through careless mobile use.

What is most surprising, though, is that they speak of mobiles not being as "safe" as is generally believed - but only referring to the security, when the biggest issue is HEALTH.

Can we not put out a press release linking these two points - while it is newsworthy?

WHY YOU SHOULD GO WIRELESS

In Daily Express on 1 July "WHY YOU SHOULD GO WIRELESS" - a large article on how good wireless computer equipment etc is. Under "Disadvantages" there was no mention of the microwave emissions given off over the premises. Article by BONNIE ESTRIDGE. No e-mail for her given, but you may be able to find her & put her right. However, Express "Letters" is expressletters@express.co.uk Max. about 120 words.

Best,

Ann.
