Democrats have a chance next year to cut into the Republican Party's majority in the U.S. Senate. But they can't do it simply by running as the other party, analysts say. The Iraq war, Bush administration miscues, Republican scandals and other GOP turmoil could help put a dent in the 55-44 seat edge held in the Senate by the Republicans (there is one Independent) as both parties prepare for 33 Senate races in 2006.
