Polls are now saying that a majority of Americans (50% to 44%) would favor impeaching the president IF he lied about Iraq. So our work is done, right? Until that is a proven fact to those 50%, let's not kid ourselves. To impeach the president NOW, a substantial number of members of the president's own party must turn on him in a dramatic way. And given the bias of the media coverage so far, as a practical matter that will happen only if 1) a major new "smoking gun" emerges (as from the Patrick Fitzgerald probe), or if 2) larger numbers of us communicate personally with them as their constituents to demand it. Since we can't rely on the first, we must concentrate on the second, and encourage everyone else we know to do the same.

There are two ways to vote for the current administration and their ongoing policies. One way is to speak actively on their behalf, but there aren't many people doing that; they're just loudmouths. The way that most people support Bush is by failing to speak out at every opportunity. WE ARE the true majority! If even 1% of us were to actually speak out on a regular basis, miracles will happen. The energy of a vast, grassroots communication web will be powerfully effective!
HARRIET MIERS LOOKS MORE LIKE A CRONY EVERY DAY
You remember the story of Brer Rabbit, who begged and pleaded not to be thrown in the briar patch. And Brer Fox was stupid enough to do exactly that. That's what's really going on with the hardcore conservatives who are so vociferously protesting, and rightfully so, the nonexistent qualifications of Miers for the Supreme Court. They are perhaps just too foolish to know it themselves yet. Miers is just another extreme right winger, who would consistently vote their interests just as Roberts will. But like Brer Fox we would be even MORE foolish than they not to oppose this nomination just because a couple prominent pedantic loudmouths are making a fuss.

We can take no satisfaction with someone just because they don't fulfill EVERYTHING on the wish list of the other side. We must stand up for what WE want and believe. Most of all we must build a national consensus that any new Supreme Court appointees must be true moderates at the worst. We can TAKE ADVANTAGE of the silly opposition of the neocon think tankers who are so intellectually greedy they will not settle for another clone vote like Thomas. Let them hold out for an "in our face" reactionary scholar. In the meantime we must all speak out on the absent merits of Miers and reject her OURSELVES as nothing more than a faith-based crony.
