Are phone masts safe?

(excerpt)

This is a really interesting question, which I raised with the King's College team (testing whether people who suffer from using a mobile phone are reporting a valid connection) yesterday. They are only looking at 900MHz GSM, but the question of "affected" of "well-being" and of "illness" is a very important one in all varieties of the EMF question.

Many people are "affected", and probably huge numbers who do not know it. Harmful or not there is a social ethic to this.

"Well-being" can include psychological problems: it has to be true that if serious intellectual people start saying there is an unmeasured risk, others may react to this fear, and their fear may affect their well-being.

The most obvious short-term experienced "risk-effect" (rather than "nuisance") is sleep disorders or direct melatonin disruption, but definitively "ill from TETRA" becomes a longer-term phenomenon (eg chronic low-level carcinogen), or a mix of primary (mildly carcinogenic) plus secondary (impaired immunity). TETRA is probably too young to exhibit this clearly from masts.

Further, "illness" may relate to the end result (debility from lack of sleep, depression from persistent migraines, cancer etc.). Or it may be attached directly to an initial sensitivity (ES/EHS). In this case labelling ES people as "vulnerable", "having a disorder", "having a disability", or with "a genetic disposition", whether for their ES or susceptibility to DNA damage etc. is subtle and insidious: being affected by ELF-EMF is regarded as abnormal, being unaffected is normal. Therefore indiscriminate use of ELF-EMF is acceptable and the vulnerable must be treated differently and protected (chemically, by shielding clothing, or however).

This is the stock-car racing paradigm of society. Crash 'em and patch 'em; it's more fun than motorway driving.

"Health disorders" attributed to TETRA, as you know, have been reported in the hundreds in Sussex alone. The observational study on the news page of http://www.tetrawatch.net shows what we have come to expect, and was mirrored in other towns. What we are told, obviously, is that these studies do not show that people's health is being affected by TETRA, only that people report certain groups of symptoms, which people like me attribute to TETRA (albeit for clearly stated reasons).

So there are people in the hundreds down here, just as elsewhere I am sure, but who is going to establish the TETRA connection?

How can I find the sensitive, those with health disorders, let alone those whose symptoms are proven to be due solely to TETRA? Is TETRA correlative, contingent or a sole cause? I don't know! There isn't even community consensus, let alone communication on this one, and most don't even want to bother their doctor. If someone were able to say "if you have a headache now, you are more likely to contract cancer from (any) masts near you, in eight years time" that would be different. For now there is inconvenience and unpleasantness, and a great British susceptibility to not rocking the boat. I have had horror stories of hallucinating children and gushing nosebleeds, of greatly worsened ME and MS, but many of these people, feeling helpless and unlistened too, just disappear; hopefully to some refuge and recovery; maybe into despair.

Whilst there is this strong propensity in the medical fraternity, encouraged by the NRPB and DoH, to discount these health disorders as "originating in the psyche", finding a valid sample is tricky. If you don't see your doctor, there is no record of the disorder. If you do, it is as like as not either psychosomatic or completely due to an unknown cause - but that is "definitely not EMF! Because it CAN'T: YOU KNOW?!" You get antidepressants, a psychiatrist or nothing.

We can find plenty of individuals: but not a control sample, and not a sample with scientific proof of cause. And this is our problem: recognition, investigation and understanding. All ways round, the current situation of indiscriminate mast deployment and lack of dispassionate attention to reported health disorders is quite unacceptable. We need doctors in TETRA localities with the mandate and mission to run clinical trials, but they must start by knowing who is a TETRA sufferer and who only thinks they are, and who is not. Then we need to demonstrate whether there is a palliative effect, a restorative effect, or a protective effect. Because that will need to be proven as well.

Sorry for the ramble, but this is at the heart of helping and protecting people (I nearly said Reducing Risk, Protecting People: the strapline for the HSE!!), and it is quite urgent. If Dr John Walker's work with EM-RRT can be properly extended and peer reviewed we may gain more attention.

I believe that the way forward is to set up a network of medical testing centres where actual biological effects can be established, instead of the "observation" which is taking place at the moment. As long as the Gov/NRPB can keep saying "no firm evidence" and insinuating that the minority who "may" be adversely affected have some psychological disorder they will be happy. We should be pressing for blood count/pressure and melatonin tests to be done on the communities who are forced to live in the shadow of these masts.

An Orange mast was erected in Kensworth in September 2001 against the wishes of residents and with no consultation or consideration of alternative sites and in spite of a lengthy petition. In Spring 2002 I heard that those near the mast were feeling ill and went to see them. The mast is between 14 and thirty metres from the closest houses and the antennae are on a level with bedroom windows.

That autumn 2 pets - a 13 year old cat and a 16 year old dog became restless; made sounds indicating they were in pain; the cat developed a tumour in its throat and the dog small irritating growths on its paws (several other animals within 100 metres have also since developed tumours - mouth; throat; paws). The original pets were tired all the time, refused food and vomited frequently. The cat had the tumour removed, but never was able to eat properly again and died last year. The dog was given treatment for heart problems at first (pre- tumours) and appeared to respond seeming better as soon as he came home from the vet, but his symptoms returned in spite of the treatment and the vet could find no other cause.

As soon as the mast was activated, Alan Brooks who lives opposite the mast was unable to sleep in his bedroom because he felt too ill and has never been able to sleep in his bed since, but has made a sleeping place at the end of his lounge furthest from the mast and tries to protect his head with a box lined with foil at night and a reflective cycle helmet during the day.

A man who lives close by had a stroke at the same time, and when the mast was reactivated after being decommissioned for the whole of April 2002 the poor man had an even worse stroke, was hospitalised for weeks and is now disabled. He wants to maintain his privacy. Most of the other residents affected want as much publicity as possible - anything to get the mast moved!

When I went to see them, the residents asked me to help them, as they felt unable to express themselves adequately. I have been writing to Council; Government; protective agencies; MPs (a great deal of support from our local MP Andrew Selous); Dept. of Health; Dr. Jill Meara and Leigh Garraway at 'Health Improvement & Partnership Directorate'; WHO; ICNIRP etc etc etc. ever since.

I went to all the houses and wrote down all the symptoms and have noted any changes for the last three years.

The symptoms I now know are found wherever masts cause health problems :-

Chronic insomnia and headaches; sore bloodshot eyes; earache and tinnitus;

vertigo and nausea; nose-bleeds amongst children and adults;

Kensworth residents also suffer sore, ulcerated mouths and throats accompanied by extreme thirst.

One old man, Brian Fensome, 14 metres from the mast, died last year having suffered all these symptoms. Having had radiation treatment for septicaemia before the mast was erected, he had been told that he could not have any more radiation. Every time he went into the kitchen in his house latterly he lost his voice and he and his wife were both very ill. They were able to sleep in their bedroom, which is at the back of the house, but their 4 yr old granddaughter was unable to sleep in the small front bedroom as she usually did saying that there was 'something in her head' (she has not been to stay since).

I can send you a copy of our document listing the history of events and photographs of the set up if you would like? No-one will listen of course, saying it is 'not in their remit' (Tony Blair) or passing info on to other people (John Prescott); South Beds District Council ( 'We can't do anything, you have to go to Central Governement.')

'It hasn't been proved' Jill Meara and Leigh Garraway; Professor Challis writes back but wants me to write to someone else instead; ICNIRP and WHO did not reply (at the time I had no individual names) Andrew Selous MP sent me names of consultants and members and I emailed all of them receiving varied replies and one very good one which I will include in this email:-

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

"Dear Mrs. Lyden,
I can understand your concerns. This is the reason why I respond so quickly to your mail. I can assure you that the issue you rasied is discussed very intensively not only among ICNIRP but also at the WHO and among other radiation protection committees (like NRPB) and national health councils. First of all, I would like to inform you that your information is not correct: ICNIRP's limits for exposure to electromagnetic fields have been issued in 1998 and have not been changed since. The scientific literature including assessment studies you cited have been reviewed by ICNIRP. This review process is ongoing and will lead to a comprehensive assessment study which will be issued by ICNIRP probably early 2005. Besides this, there are several scientific attempts to investigate adverse health effects and mobile phone basestations, one epidemiologic study is on the way in your country, others are right before starting e.g. in Switzerland and Germany. Also at my institute we have already reacted to the concerns of people and are performing a sleep study where we investigate potential changes in sleep quality associated to electromagnetic antennas with an innovative new approach.

Instead of asking affected people to come to the laboratory for investigations we do measurements on site where people suffer and study their reaction to protection from electromagnetic fields rather than to provocation with additional fields. The study is ongoing. Other copuntries like Germany have already expressed their interest and asked us to make investigations also there. We hope to come up with first results soon. If there would be financial support, we could extend our investigations also to your country.

Therefore, the message is, that concerns of people like you are taken serious and that there are already several scientific attempts to investigate and solve the problem.

Kind regards

I keep quoting the proof from scientific tests in Schwarzenberg that electromagnetic radiofrequency inhibits the hormone melatonin in cows and humans wich explains why the above mentioned symptoms are experienced in association with these non-thermal emissions. Have you seen Dr. Neil Cherry's findings regarding this last? I have the documents (provided by Panayis Zambellis, leader of the Farley Hill group who have suffered from effects for years near what is now the massive 'Transco' mast in Luton (was teh Crown Castle mast). If you wish, I can send you these too - also the Pandora document which tells the history of Russian bombardment of the USA embassy in Moscow with "fairly low frequency" emissions.

Let me know what you would like, and I will email or post it.

Happy New year to you and your staff, yours sincerely,

Gillian Lyden

--------

Dr. Neil Cherry says that no evidence of psychosomatic illness was found amongst those involved in scientific tests regarding these symptoms we all know are found near many masts. I mentioned the animals who suffered near the Orange mast in Kensworth to some Orange reps who were looking at the mast. They informed me that the animals were probably ill in sympathy with their owners!

Gill Lyden

Why will no-one LISTEN!

The proof cam in 1988 when the Swiss Government FINALLY agreed to shut down the transmitting station BECAUSE SCIENTIFIC TESTS PROVED THAT ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIOFREQUENCY NON THERMAL EMISSIONS PREVENT TEH BODIES OF HUMANS AND ANIMALS FROM SECRETING THE HORMONE MELATONIN !!!!!

And there is the reason why people cannot sleep (because serotonin is secreted as in daylight, instead of melatonin taking over as it should).

Therefore, Dr. Neil Cherry told us in July 2000, bloodpressure is not lowered, killer cells which destroy cancer and virus infected cells are not activated and:-

"THE MULTIPLE OBSERVATIONS OF MELATONIN REDUCTION IN EMR EXPOSES POPULATIONS ........... INCREASES THE INCIDENCE OF ALL THE CONDITIONS IDENTIFIED BY REITER AND ROBINSON ........INCLUDING IMPAIRED IMMUNE SYSTEM; DISEASES FROM INFECTIONS AND VIRUSES; ARTHRITIS; DIABETES; CANCER; REPRODUCTIVE; NEUROLOGICAL AND CARDIAC DISEASES AND/ OR DEATH.

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL EVIDENCE CONFIRMS ALL OF THESE, EXCEPT ARTHRITIS, HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED TO OCCUR IN EXPOSED HUMAN POPULATIONS.

I will send this to the Telegraph, NRPB and local papers as well as to you.

With sincere wishes that all our dreams for the New year come true, thanks in part to Eileen's brave attempt on TV.

It will have to take a BIG VOICE from the PEOPLE to really get some changes

My name is Sandi Lawrence and I am one of the new Mast Sanity committee members. If I communicate with politicians or phone companies (especially 02 Airwave) I make sure they know that I am in this to the finish i.e. healthy results for humans and animals, or scatter my ashes to the wind over the sea, whichever comes first! That is the way it is for me.

I think the Sioux Indian in me rises to any threat to Our Creator's wish, that we take care of this Earth; the animals of the air, land, and sea; and every human, whatever race or tribe.

I wouldn't let my brother kill woodlice when I was young, so sure as hell, I am not going to let those with power and money hurt humans, animals and the environment without a determined and lifelong effort to oust them! Even female part Native Americans can be warriors when the blood is up, you know!

Far from being dead and buried, Mast Sanity now has a new committee to propel it forwards and upwards and carry on the work Lisa and co started before we arrived on the scene. Sorry, but I cannot name the "and co" because we have been too busy trying to take over the reins temporarily for Lisa, and I did not think about what has been, only what must be done now!

I hope you, and all new mast campaigners to come, will benefit from what we are trying to achieve for you all. I also hope that we will have your support in return.

My personal opinion is that I think it will have to take a BIG VOICE from the PEOPLE to really get some changes, unless a miracle happens, so exercise those vocal chords everyone and join hands across the UK, incase a miracle doesn't happen!

(We are just normal, everyday people, you know, so we cannot do it all. We need you, too, and more help with Mast Sanity!)

CONYERS' QUESTIONS: Calls for probe sought to protect crucial principles

Detroit Free Press

There's no question that politics was a part of the quixotic effort of U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Detroit, and others Thursday to investigate Ohio's election results. Even if they couldn't reverse the Nov. 2 results, undermining President George W. Bush's proclaimed mandate by exposing polling place problems in the decisive state would have been a good payoff for Democrats.

Progressive Democrats lead historic voting rights protest as Congress ratifies flawed 2004 Electoral College tally

by Bob Fitrakis, Steve Rosenfeld and Harvey Wasserman

The Free Press

A handful of progressive Democrats in the House and a lone Senator, Barbara Boxer of California, forced the Republican-dominated Congress to hear two hours of protest Thursday about how the 2004 presidential vote was replete with efforts to disenfranchise Democratic voters and suppress turnout in a torrent of tactics reminiscent of the Jim Crow era.

Senator Boxer's challenge brought national attention to the crisis in our democracy

Message From MoveOn
1/7/2005
MoveOn.org

Yesterday in Congress Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) joined Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH) and objected to certifying the Ohio Electoral College vote from the presidential election.

The 2004 election, like the election four years ago, was marked by widespread voting problems that denied tens of thousands of Americans their right to vote. Unlike in 2000 when every senator stood silent, Senator Boxer's challenge brought national attention to this crisis in our democracy and forced a two hour debate on voting and elections.

Send thanks to Jones and Boxer

We did it! Yesterday, on the floor of Congress there was actually a debate about our electoral system! The heroes of the day were two superwomen: Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones, who spearheaded to objection on the House side; and Senator Barbara Boxer, who was the SOLE senator willing to vote against certifying the Electoral College votes.

"It is on behalf of those millions of Americans who believe in and value our democratic process and the right to vote that I put forth this objection today,” said Congresswoman Jones. “If they are willing stand at the polls for countless hours in the rain as many did in Ohio, then I can surely stand up for them here in the halls of Congress..."

CODEPINK was active throughout this process, making thousands of calls to our representatives, hosting rallies outside Senator Boxer’s offices in California, helping to get a busload of fantastic local organizers from Ohio to Washington DC for yesterday’s vote, and participating in the “Defend Democracy, Support the Challenge” rally and march from the White House to the Capitol, with speakers such as Rev. Jesse Jackson and our own Medea Benjamin.

We ended the day at the office of Senator Boxer, singing her songs of thanks for stepping forward. Although the initial results of the electoral vote were eventually certified after hours of debate, the issue of "electoral justice" (as Boxer referred to it) has made its way into the minds and agendas of our nation's leaders.

Let's keep the momentum going!

1. Call Congresswoman Jones (202-225-7032) and Senator Boxer (202-224-3553) to say thank you on behalf of Code Pink and say we look forward to working with them on electoral reform legislation.

2. Apply political pressure for electoral reform on your members of Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, over the next couple of weeks when they are back home, including meetings or, if a meeting is resisted, some kind of public action at their office. Demand that they support the call by Democratic House Judiciary Committee members for these two things: "1) Congress should engage in further hearings into the widespread irregularities reported in Ohio; we believe the problems are serious enough to warrant the appointment of a joint select Committee of the House and Senate to investigate and report back to the Members; and (2) Congress needs to enact election reform to restore our people's trust in our democracy. These changes should include putting in place more specific federal protections for federal elections, particularly in the areas of audit capability for electronic voting machines and casting and counting of provisional ballots, as well as other needed changes to federal and state election laws."

3. Support our Voter Bill of Rights. Please sign the bill and pass it on to friends, family, co-workers and community partners http://www.codepinkalert.org/National_Actions_Voter_Bill_of_Rights.shtml. Take it to your city council and get them to adopt some of the various points (or the bill in its entirety) or take it to your community meetings as a starting point for discussions.

In the coming months, we will be working with our allies in Congress to develop an "omnibus" piece of legislation that would bring together many of the issues in the Voter Bill of Rights, and develop a strong grassroots lobbying effort to build support for this and other electoral reform legislation.

So let’s keep moving forward and pushing for an electoral system we can be proud of!

Onward and upward,

Governments cause wars, Citizens fight wars, and die in them

The real reason for wars:
Governments cause wars, Citizens fight wars, and die in them.

"A tyrant is always stirring up some war or other, in order that the people may require a leader." ~Plato

Anyone who even starts to understand the powers behind governments will know that wars are almost never fought to accomplish the justifications that are publically proclaimed.

Governments (and the people in governments) cause wars, and benefit from them. Citizens fight wars, and die in them.

Since the fighting of wars is proclaimed to be a patriotic calling, the most patriotic people generally die in them.

Tyrants, and would be tyrants, have no better way to purge their populations of freedom loving dissidents.

-- William Shakespeare SUMMED IT UP in one line in "King Lear"
"Be it thy policy to busy giddy minds with foreign quarrels."

It takes very little knowledge of history to know about the perpetual condition of war that plagued European history. France and England had ONE war that lasted 116 years.

Yet all of those kings were first cousins. They had hemophilia all the way from Russia to England because they we so inbred. The "good guy, bad guy" con game has worked for centuries, and is no different today.

While pretending to fight communism in Viet Nam, the United States aided, and traded with, communism all over the world, on credit. American wheat diverted Soviet workers from the fields into the war factories, so that they could supply North Viet Nam. The American Mac Truck Company built the largest truck factory in the world, on the Kama River in the Soviet Union. Those trucks went to North Viet Nam on a highway build with U. S. aid.

War is used as an excuse to raise taxes, and to abolish civil liberties.

"The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."
-- Hermann Goering at the Nuremberg trials.

Description of Straw Man fallacy

The Straw Man fallacy is committed when a person simply ignores the actual opposing argument and substitutes a distorted, exaggerated, irrelevant, or misrepresented version of that position.

A "Straw Man Argument" is a misrepresentation of the opposing view, set up in such a way that it is easy to demolish. This is meant to bring the opponent's position into disrepute, by ascribing to him positions that he never endorsed, or some minor point that is not really at issue. The intention is to avoid having to address the real arguments. A person creates a Straw Man as an easy opponent, because he is not capable of dealing with the issue that actually WAS presented. The person creating a Straw Man hopes to burden his opponent with an unpopular, or indefensible, position. The use of this tactic is actually an admission of defeat on the question that was actually presented, and was evaded.

Cellular Phones Linked to Cellular DNA Damage

If you think cell phones are the best invention since sliced bread, think again. Using a cell phone could permanently damage cells (and DNA) in your body.

Drug Company Empire Ready to Fall - Cell phone industry take note

The drug company's reign in power appears ready to fall. Continual disclosures of drug dangers, increasing drug costs and a decline in new medications are all signals that the end is in sight. What can you do to accelerate the process?

Drug Company Empire Ready to Fall

New York Times December 18, 2004

The $500 billion drug company dynasty finally appears ready to fall as the industry struggles to save face among continual reports of serious problems with well-known drugs. Meanwhile, drug research and development is on the decline and the industry is struggling to find new medicines.

Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Eli Lilly, all major players in the drug company market, each disclosed major problems with popular medications -- all in the span of about half a day:

Pfizer announced an increased risk of heart problems in people taking the painkiller Celebrex (one of the world's best-selling medicines).

AstraZeneca reported that lung cancer drug Iressa, which was approved in the United States in 2003, did not prolong lives in a trial.

Eli Lilly warned that Strattera, an ADHD drug, might cause severe liver injury. The news pushed stocks down, causing the market value of the three companies to decline by more than $30 billion.

But it's not just these three companies that need to worry -- all major drug companies are at risk of similar declines. Although spending on drug development has nearly doubled to about $33 billion, new drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have declined significantly from 53 in 1996 to 21 in 2003.

The major threat to companies (aside from growing negative publicity due to dangerous side effects) is that if fewer drugs are produced, investors will want to cut the companies' research spending.

Meanwhile, governments may force companies to cut drug prices to support programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

The result? A less profitable industry that produces fewer new drugs.

The drug companies are not going out without a fight, however. In an attempt to save their falling dynasty, drug makers have been:

· Pursuing aggressive ad campaigns to doctors and patients
· Increasing drug prices
· Attempting to extend patents on existing medications

The efforts have been a mixed blessing for the industry. While they've protected drug company profits in the meantime, they've also irritated the industry's target market -- both consumers and governments alike -- and have even caused a political reaction in the United States and Europe.

Pharmalobbyismus: Chemiekonzern Bayer in poltischen Ämtern aktiv (06.01.05)

Our Posthuman Future : Consequences of the Biotechnology Revolution

This fall, the editors of a leading public policy magazine, Foreign Policy, asked eight prominent intellectuals to identify the single idea they felt was currently posing the greatest threat to humanity. Most of the suggestions were merely old demons: various economic myths, the idea that you can fight "a war on evil," Americaphobia and so on.

Only Francis Fukuyama, a member of the President's Council on Bioethics, came up with a new candidate: transhumanism. Transhumanism might be described as the technology of advanced individual enhancement. While it includes physical modifications (diamondoid teeth, self-styling hair, autocleaning ears, nanotube bones, lipid metabolizers, polymer muscles), most of the interest in the technology focuses on the integration of brains and computers — especially brains and networks. Sample transhumanist apps could include cell phone implants (which would allow virtual telepathy), memory backups and augmenters, thought recorders, reflex accelerators, collaborative consciousness (whiteboarding in the brain), and a very long list of thought-controlled actuators.

Ultimately, the technology could extend to the uploading and downloading of entire minds in and out of host bodies, providing a self-consciousness that, theoretically, would have no definitive nor necessary end. That is, immortality, of a sort.

While some of these abilities are clearly quite far off, others are already attracting researchers, and none are known (at the moment at least) to be impossible to achieve. Fukuyama obviously felt the technology was close enough at hand to write a book about it, Our Posthuman Future: Consequences of the Biotechnology Revolution, the thrust of which is that society should give the whole idea a miss. His main concern was that transhumanism would place an impossible burden on the idea of equal rights, since it would multiply the number of ways of being human well past our powers of tolerance. (If we have all this trouble with something simple like skin color, just wait until some people have wings, augmented memory and reflex accelerators.)

Mega fear over something nano

Nanotechnology is happening now, and it has some dangers

If you believe the hype, the nanotechnology revolution will deliver a future of unprecedented material abundance for everyone, limitless energy, ecological sustainability, improved human health and performance, and smarter, cheaper and more efficient materials and products.

But there is another nanotechnological future that we are beginning to hear more about. This is one of toxic nanoparticle pollution, powerful new military equipment and weapons, ubiquitous surveillance devices, widening global inequities and the further concentration of corporate ownership and control across all industrial sectors. Products containing nanoparticles have already been commercialised, including sunscreens, cosmetics, car parts and silicon chips, and in the future we can expect them to also be used in food and pharmaceutical products. Given their potentially greater reactivity and toxicity, the release and accumulation of these nanoparticles in the environment also raises concerns for their impacts on other living organisms and ecological processes.

The release of nanorobots and nano-engineered organisms in the more distant future may create even more frightful scenarios. I'd suggest we pencil the term "nanopollution" into our ecological lexicons now, and let the full implications of what that means sink in later. Another concern is the development of a new range of ultra-small and smart surveillance technologies that can be used to monitor every sphere of our social and working lives.

Astonishingly - or perhaps not - very little testing of any kind has been done on the nanoparticles that have already been commercialised, and there are no regulations anywhere in the world dealing specifically with nanotechnology and nanoscale materials and products per se.

New Army Recruits Pre-Programmed for Violence?

Actually, yes. The new recruits we get into the Army are already “hard-wired” with both good and bad types of behavior. Of course, as usual, we don’t focus much on the good types of behavior except to reward it occasionally when it occurs. More often, we focus on the bad behavior because that is what causes problems and takes up so much of our time as Leaders. We spend 90 percent of our time with the “problem” Soldiers and only 10 percent of our time with those “good” Soldiers that have acceptable or excellent behavior. Why is that? Is it possible that we are now getting recruits that have been pre-programmed by American society? Of course it is!

Take violence for example. According to Abelard.org “The average American child will have watched 100,000 acts of televised violence, including 8,000 depictions of murder, by the time he or she finishes the sixth grade (approximately 13 years old).” Pretty startling, huh? Bet you didn’t know that. Think about your own children in today’s permissive society where television serves as the “great babysitter” of children.

The march into internment advances

The dialectic is still alive and growing again. Cause disruption, to create an excuse, in order to apply the remedy. Incarceration is built one prisoner at a time. One day a moat will encircle your castle. It won’t provide a secure defense but will undermine the foundation of the walls. What about all the news this year that was seldom reported? If the media ignores the significant does that mean you are immune to its consequence? Or are you resigned to accept your RFID chip implant as the price for living under a benign Skull and Bones version of compassionate harmony? 2004 was a great disappointment.

Another election year cycle - no reprieve - just more suffering. Our political tempest won’t pass like a tornado. It’s a whirlwind that never ceases to obliterate a social order worthy of defending. If lives are worth saving from a natural disaster, why are they so easily sacrificed or offered up in the normal course of obedience to the global community? The prospect for 2005 may well hold surprises, but established trends have a life of their own. Continued war, global inflation and more social chaos. That is the state of the global gulag. As civil liberties are disregarded the typhoon of human carnage will intensify.

What will it take to make that the top story for next year?

The Government We Deserve?

by William Fisher

The 2004 Presidential campaign reminded me of an earlier time. Two decades ago, I worked for a major public relations firm. Our biggest client was the world’s largest cigarette maker. One of my jobs for this client was writing press releases. We had two criteria for success. One was whether the press release was technically excellent. The other was how many newspapers published it. Whether it was accurate or not was not on the table. We knew it wasn’t. But no one cared....

A Historic Day : The Death of Democracy

by Katherine Brengle

Today is a historic day for America. For the first time since 1877, members of Congress chose to contest the certification of electoral votes. The vote count stopped when Vice President Dick Cheney reached Ohio. Based on concrete facts about voter disenfranchisement compiled by John Conyers and his staff, Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH) stood together and forced debate in both houses of Congress about certification of Ohio's electoral votes. The Senate's debate convened quickly, as only 75 Senators were available to vote and it takes only a simple majority to turn down such an objection. Out of 75 Senators, 55 were Republicans. The objection was overturned 74 to 1. This means that 19 Democrats voted with the Republican Party on this. The dissenting vote was cast by Senator Barbara Boxer, who had cosigned the objection with Stephanie Tubbs Jones....

Supporting torture is not Gonzales' greatest sin

by Brian Foley

CounterPunch

01/06/05

Focusing on torture as the main objection to Alberto Gonzales' taking over as Attorney General distracts us from his greater sin: his attempt to give the president the power to imprison Americans incommunicado and indefinitely, without recourse to courts or lawyers. Such contempt for our civil rights shows that Gonzales cannot be trusted to protect them.

Not with a bang but a whimper

by Tim Grieve

Salon

Thursday was the first serious work day for the 109th Congress, and it was a day of humiliation and futility for the Democrats who still have jobs on Capitol Hill. Republicans picked up four Senate seats and three House seats in November, and signs of the Democrats' increasing powerlessness were everywhere Thursday. In a hearing room in the Hart Senate Office Building, Biden and his Democratic colleagues went through the motions of questioning an attorney general nominee whose confirmation is a foregone conclusion. On the floor of the House of Representatives, a handful of Democrats launched a meaningless protest against the certification of Bush's reelection...[subscription or ad view required] (01/07/05)

Civil liberties and enemy combatants

by Harvey Silvergate

Reason

01/06/05

If you were relying solely on media accounts for guidance, you would have gotten the impression that the Supreme Court's June 28 rulings on 'enemy combatants' were a clean sweep for civil liberties. With few exceptions, reporters and commentators interpreted the rulings as unwavering affirmations of the judicial branch?s authority in the face of an overreaching executive intent on detaining, indefinitely and incommunicado, citizens and noncitizens designated as enemies in the war on terror. ... The reality, however, was significantly less uplifting...

Senator Boxer and American Democracy

Tibor's Place on the Web
01/06/05

California Senator Barbara Boxer, leading the effort of the Democrats in Congress to hold up the confirmation of the Electoral College vote on January 6, claimed that the absolutely core principle of America is democracy. Because, she claimed, the last two presidential elections had threatened the democratic process, it was necessary to call attention to this fact in both the United States House and Senate by this delay...

Medical quackery : Government policy in the US

The Exterritorial Imperative

01/05 -- reprint from 1994

'Supply-and-demand doesn't apply in medicine' declared a headline in the Honolulu-Advertiser. The soaring cost of medical care in the United States has moved most pundits to call for some kind of government health insurance. And, in typical fashion, politicians have joined the crowd by offering solutions that increase their power rather than to examine ways that government created the problem in the first place...

Excuse me for being culturally insensitive, but America is fast becoming a banana republic. Our arrogant caudillo swaggers across the national stage wearing a variety of outlandish military uniforms, while adoring crowds of red-state fascists roar their approval. And every known principle of American political culture -- the rule of law and the Constitution, the balance of powers, the right of due process, and the inviolability of our homes -- is thrown overboard in the name of fighting a war without end...

Stop the Nomination of Gonzales as AG

Torture Is Not Quaint.
Act with the Center for Constitutional Rights
To Oppose the Gonzales Nomination!

This is the week to make your voice heard! Confirmation hearings on the nomination of Alberto Gonzales for Attorney General begin tomorrow, Thursday, January 6th. If you haven't already contacted your representatives, click here to send a letter (or paste http://www.ccr-ny.org/actionalert into your browser).

Two weeks ago, we called on people to oppose the nomination of one of the chief architects of this Administration's lawless torture policy to the highest law enforcement office in the land. Last Thursday night, right before New Year's Eve, the government quietly posted a new torture memo that repudiated the memos Gonzales wrote and commissioned as White House Counsel and omitted his most radical recommendations: even they don't think his legal opinions on these crucial questions stand up to scrutiny.

Please take a minute to send a letter to your representatives urging them to do more than ask difficult questions. Ask them to stand up and oppose the Gonzales nomination. The time to start fighting is now.

And please forward this widely and quickly!

Sincerely yours,

Ron Daniels
Executive Director
Center for Constitutional Rights

P.S. We appreciate your help in our efforts to hold this Administration accountable for its extremist actions and policies. If you do not wish to receive emails from CCR in the future, please respond to this email with "remove from list" in the subject line. And if you would like to learn more about the important work CCR does on Guantánamo, Abu Ghraib, the Patriot Act, corporate accountability and more, please visit our website: http://www.ccr-ny.org.

Tough Questions Are Not Enough

In their scathing editorial on the nomination, The Washington Post linked Alberto Gonzales directly to the torture at Abu Ghraib and called his legal positions "damaging and erroneous." Newsweek wrote that "Gonzales ultimately signed off on all of the administration's most controversial legal moves."

In his infamous torture memo, Alberto Gonzales called the Geneva Conventions "obsolete" and "quaint" and paved the way to the systematic abuse of detainees at Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib, many of whom are represented by the Center for Constitutional Rights. At CCR, we have seen the terrible effect of his policies on human beings first hand.

Even though experts in interrogation have long known that torture elicits false confessions and bad intelligence, Gonzales and his circle discussed the use of specific torture techniques like mock burial and water boarding, and approved the use of dogs, hooding, and extreme sensory deprivation, all forbidden by the Geneva Conventions and the International Covenant Against Torture.

Americans can now no longer expect to be protected by the Geneva Conventions: the policies devised by Mr. Gonzales have endangered our own troops the world over for decades to come.

Despite all this, many members of Congress have said they will not oppose Mr. Gonzales's nomination and that he will only be made to answer tough questions before sailing through the confirmation process. We at the Center for Constitutional Rights object to giving an architect of torture a promotion. Tough questions are not enough. Please ask your Senators, Representatives and the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to stand up and oppose the nomination of Alberto Gonzales for Attorney General.

Confirmation hearings begin this Wednesday. Please send a message to the Bush Administration and the world that the American people do not condone torture. We hope you will join us in declaring that this man and his policies do not represent our American values!

Ohio Voters and Advocates Brief Media in DC

1/5/2005
ILCA
By David Swanson

On Wednesday afternoon, busloads of Ohio voters -- and Ohio citizens who tried to vote but were denied -- packed into a room at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Members of the media needed only to hop on an elevator to learn what they had to say. Few reporters attended, but enough were there that a story or a sound bite is bound to show up somewhere. Three or four networks had cameras, including ABC and CBS. If the media doesn't carry the story, the event was for naught. Most of what was said is not new to those who have been following along on the internet. Most of it would be entirely new to most of the country.

Cross used as antenna

Mobile Phone Masts Go Undercover

Antenna masts disguised as crucifixes are too much for some.

European companies are finding ingenious ways to disguise ugly, but necessary, mobile phone antenna masts. Customers can pick everything from trees to crucifixes.

Those willing to set up mobile phone antenna masts on their property can get good money for their cooperation -- along with grief from their neighbors.

The masts are typically unwanted in neighborhoods, either because of fears that they can damage your health or due to their ugly appearance. There's an answer to that last objection, simply dress the masts up as trees, chimneys, or even crucifixes.

"Different authorities always request ways to make the masts look nicer," said Josef Skuk, manager of the Austrian company Industrieanlageabau. So Skuk's company started disguising their masts to look like full-grown trees.

"Pine needle or trees with leaves, we have both on offer," Skuk said.

A growing number of companies across Europe provide similar services. Kaal in Holland and the British company, Francis & Lewis, offer trees that can be "built in a day" and look real, even down to the bark.

The starting price for Skuk's trees is around €25,000 ($30,200). But if the client wants to avoid foliage, the company also produces chimney masts and crucifixes for churches.

Jesus on the antenna

The latter crosses the line for some congregations, who are not willing to see Christ on a cross, with antennae sticking out here and there. The mayor of Schwabhausen, in deeply Catholic Bavaria, has come out against such an antenna in his village church. Mobile phone companies are hesitant as well.

"The churches actually don't like it so much," said Susanne Satzer-Spree, a Vodafone spokeswoman.

However, some houses of worship have managed to make their masts part of their identity.

"Everyone recognizes the church now," said Johannes de Fallois, pastor at a church in Neuburg.

Mobile phone companies are careful to emphasize that the camouflage is not supposed to actually hide mast construction from community residents, but Hans Ultich-Raithel of Munich's Environmental Institute is not too sure.

"Mobile phone masts are hidden often in chimneys because of protests from residents," he said.
