Groups seeks to stop biopharming harvest

An AIDS vaccine in a breakfast cereal?

It could happen. But a group of doctors and others don't want it happening in Oregon — at least not yet.

They will ask the Legislature next month to impose a four-year moratorium on biopharming, crops genetically altered to fight or prevent human diseases. The state chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility is concerned that such crops would infiltrate the environment, exposing residents to drugs they don't need. Biopharming represents the latest twist on genetic modification in agriculture. Biotechnology companies already have produced corn varieties containing a protein found in HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Their goal is to manufacture food products, such as breakfast cereals, to orally deliver an AIDS vaccine.

Marines in Iraq conducted mock executions of juvenile prisoners during the war there last year, burned and tortured other prisoners with electrical shocks, and allegedly warned one Navy medic to keep his "mouth shut" about abuse and threatened to kill another medic if he assisted an injured Iraqi soldier or civilian, according to investigators' records. The new revelations of detainee mistreatment, disclosed today after the ACLU obtained them in a lawsuit against the federal government, for the first time detail case histories in which 11 Marines have been punished for abusing prisoners and two were disciplined for falsely boasting about killing and torturing detainees. Further, the records describe government officials deep in debate about what to do with the bodies of detainees killed while in the custody of U.S. troops and of Navy criminal investigators scrambling to keep up with the growing number of abuse cases after the Abu Ghraib prison scandal became public last spring.

"Heads up," an assistant special agent-in-charge of the Navy's investigative field office in the Middle East warned his superiors in an urgent e-mail dispatched at 6 a.m. on June 14. He was desperate for more investigators.

US troops used mock executions, electric shocks on Iraqis

US Marines fired a pistol in a mock execution involving four young Iraqi looters and shocked another Iraqi detainee with an electric transformer until he danced, a US Navy document shows. The document dated June 16 detailed 10 substantiated incidents of detainee abuse in Iraq involving 24 Marines dating back to May 2003.

On Monday the Pentagon was forced to admit it was investigating two more deaths in custody in Afghanistan that it had previously acknowledged.

The Marine Corps said 13 Marines were convicted in courts-martial stemming from the incidents, getting prison sentences of up to 15 months.

Files show more US abuse in Iraq

Evidence of more prisoner abuse in Iraq has come to light after the US military was forced to release it by the courts. The documents show that US marines carried out a mock execution, used electric shocks and burned prisoners. American campaign groups obtained the US navy documents by using freedom of information legislation. The navy said those found guilty of abuse had been punished, but added that many allegations - some relating to killings - had been dismissed.

Ten "substantiated" incidents of detainee abuse were detailed, leading to the court martial conviction of 13 marines, and the jailing of some others.

As Americans prepared for Thanksgiving, an estimated 100,000 residents of the besieged Iraqi city of Fallujah, trapped in their homes, struggled to survive without fresh food, water or electricity, reportedly cut off by U.S. forces on Nov. 8. Meanwhile, on the streets of Fallujah, a city of more than 350,000, dogs gnaw on bloated and rotting corpses that remain unburied for weeks. Thousands of families in Fallujah were reported to be in a critical humanitarian situation after U.S. forces prevented the delivery of relief supplies. An Iraq Red Crescent Society (IRCS) humanitarian aid convoy, reportedly blocked by U.S. troops for more than two weeks, was allowed to deliver aid to residents in the heart of the city on Nov. 25. On Thanksgiving, U.S. forces permitted the IRCS convoy carrying thousands of food parcels, blankets, tents and medical supplies to enter the city and allowed one of the clinics to be converted into a temporary hospital to treat the injured.

Rana Sidani of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Geneva, Switzerland, however, told American Free Press on Nov. 30 that "many civilians" were still prevented from receiving aid or medical care.

Last week another gigantic step was taken toward the Sovietization of America. The so-called "Intelligence Reform" bill was passed by the Republican-controlled Congress. I feel confident in saying that 95 percent of Congress didn't bother to read this 3,000 page tome except the portions that guarantee pork to their big donors. Beginning in 2005, the Department of Homeland Security, overriding the sovereignty of the states, will issue all driver's licenses and birth certificates that meet some "federalized standards" including biometric "security" provisions. Contrary to existing law, newborns will be automatically issued a Social Security number, which would force them into the federal taxing scheme called Social Security. All children will be denied enrollment in the government indoctrination centers (schools) without first supplying a Homeland Security registered birth certificate. If this doesn't chill you, it should. Since the Social Security taxing scheme came into being back in 1935, no one has ever been required to join. The government has never automatically issued numbers because it has always been voluntary. Should this toxic bill get signed into law by Bush (a given), for the first time, Americans will be forced into this program against their will.

One of the highest priorities in instilling the communist moral principles into a population is the joining of all human beings into a single collective (we) where the individual no longer thinks independently. The Soviets believe that the "new communist man" will become one with the state by persuading him or her to relinquish their individuality, their identity, their own self and merge into the collective (community).

Bei der Untersuchung von Knochenmark Schmieren von EMF exponierten und scheinexponierten Tieren haben wir eine fast dreifache Erhöhung von Microkernen (MN) in Polychomatischen Erythrozyten (PCE) nach EMF Exposition beobachtet. Ein Vorkommen von Microkernen wurde auch bei Polymorphkernigen Zellen beobachtet. Die Vorkommen von Microkernen in weiblichen Ratten war kleiner als die in männlichen Ratten. Die Ergebnisse zeigen auf, dass 910MHz EMF als ein schädlicher Erreger betrachtet werden kann, welcher in der Lage dazu ist, gentoxische Effekte zu produzieren.

Aiming to investigate the possibility of electromagnetic fields (EMF) developed by nonionizing radiation to be a noxious agent capable of inducing genotoxicity to humans, in the current study we have investigated the effect of 910-MHz EMF in rat bone marrow. Rats were exposed daily for 2 h over a period of 30 consecutive days. Studying bone marrow smears from EMF-exposed and sham-exposed animals, we observed an almost threefold increase of micronuclei (MN) in polychromatic erythrocytes (PCEs) after EMF exposure. An induction of MN was also observed in polymorphonuclear cells. The induction of MN in female rats was less than that in male rats. The results indicate that 910-MHz EMF could be considered as a noxious agent capable of producing genotoxic effects.

As you might have read, there is widespread confusion among BoE's about the definition of "random" when referring to the "random 3%" hand recount required by law. Many officials seem to believe that choosing which precincts to hand recount based on the number of voters is 'random.' Cuyahoga limited the selection of 'random' precincts to those that had 550 votes and over, which effectively eliminated approximately 90% of precincts from consideration.

The wars upon Iraq and Afghanistan have included torture of prisoners and murders of civilians. Such actions inspires more and more Muslim men to want revenge against the United States. They refer to the United States as the "Great Satan". There are 1.4 billion Muslims. The United States has about 300 million people. Bush and his war team either didn't give any consideration that Muslims outnumber Americans or else didn't care. Bush, Cheney, and their friends are getting richer and richer from war while Americans are no safer than before those wars and our soldiers are becoming disabled, such as limbs or faces blown off, or dead as a result of war.

Also unless the war is stopped, there will be a draft. No doubt, I'm not the only that has relatives that would be in the age range to be drafted. I have a daughter, a niece, and a nephew that are now in the age range to be drafted. Prior to the Iraqi war I wrote a letter to Bush to try to influence him to not attack the Iraqi people, but instead to have a thorough inspection of Iraq and find and arrest Saddam Hussein. Saddam Hussein has been arrested. Bush said the war was over a while back but keeps it going on and on.

I've heard news that war will go on 4-5 more years and troops be in Iraq up to 10 years from now. It's turning into another Vietnam. Iraq belongs to the Iraqi people. The U.S.A. has no business trying to take control of Iraq. Desperation for oil is no reason for such wars and occupation. If a country can't find enough oil on it's own land, then the proper way to get oil is to buy it.

Another fact to consider is that as long as the war goes on the costs keep running up the national debt. Someone told me that when the U.S.A.'s national debt was $6 trillion, that most of that had been caused by the Vietnam war. I can see how when a war costs mega- billions of dollars and it's borrowed money, the interest on that debt could accumulate into trillions of dollars. Please sign the petition.

Funkchips sind unsichtbare Wächter. In Verpackungen, Bauteile, Karten oder gar Körpergewebe integriert, können sie eifrig Daten sammeln und vom Nutzer unbemerkt umhersenden. Während Unternehmen auf effizientere Produktion und Logistik hoffen, rufen Konsumentenvereinigungen zum Boykott der so genannten RFID-Systeme auf.

Eingesetzt werden sollen die "intelligenten Etiketten" nicht nur bei der Kennzeichnung von Waren und Tieren, sondern auch bei der Zutrittüberwachung von Firmen, Stadien und Räumen sowie der Steuerung industrieller Prozesse. (Foto: dpa)

"Wir sind jetzt schon gläserne Menschen, aber die Dimension wird mit der RFID-Technik noch einmal deutlich zunehmen", sagt Britta Oertel vom Institut für Zukunftsstudien und Technologiebewertung (IZT). Allzu leicht ließen sich mit den Chips exakte Daten zu Gewohnheiten und Eigenarten eines Menschen sammeln.

Auf RFID (Radio-Frequenz-Identifikation) basierende Systeme bestehen aus einem Datenträger sowie einem Lesegerät und sollen etwa den Barcode ersetzen. Je nach Bauart lassen sich die Datenträger nicht nur ablesen, sondern auch verändern. Eingesetzt werden sollen die "intelligenten Etiketten" bei der Zutrittsüberwachung von Unternehmen, Stadien und Räumen, der Steuerung industrieller Prozesse, der Kennzeichnung von Waren, Tieren und Menschen sowie in Ersatzteil- und Recyclingkreisläufen.

Unter Fachleuten ist umstritten, ob RFID-Systeme noch intensiver als bereits mit Kreditkarten, Kundenkarten und Mobiltelefonen geschehen die Privatsphäre zerstören. Experten des IZT und der Eidgenössischen Materialprüfungs- und Forschungsanstalt (EMPA) untersuchten daher im Auftrag des Bundesamtes für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik die Chancen und Risiken.

"Wie jede neue Technik hat auch diese zwei Seiten", zieht Oertel ein Fazit der Studie. So ermögliche beispielsweise die Markierung von Nutztieren mit RFID-Chips eine gläserne Produktionskette bis zur Ladentheke. Andererseits könnten Arbeitgeber die Technik dazu nutzen, Verhalten und Leistung ihrer Angestellten zu observieren. "Solche Daten werden gesammelt, auch wenn es verboten ist", ist Oertel überzeugt.

"In Skigebieten gibt es solche Funketiketten schon", sagt Oertel. "Der Vorteil ist, dass der Skipass nicht mehr mühsam aus den Taschen rausgepellt werden muss." Oft dienten die Chips zusätzlich als Schlüssel fürs Hotel, als Sammelkarte für die Hotelbar-Rechnungen und als Busticket. Wer sich als Weinliebhaber oder Wellnessurlauber zu erkennen gebe, könne künftig laut Oertel nach seiner Reise mit Bergen gezielter Werbung "beglückt" werden.

In den USA werden die Schnüffelchips sogar Schwerkranken implantiert, um ihnen eine freiere Bewegung bei steter gesundheitlicher Überwachung zu ermöglichen. "RFIDs in Menschen sollte es grundsätzlich nicht geben. Da wurde eine Grenze überschritten", kritisiert Oertel.

Bei aller Kritik dürfe nicht vergessen werden, dass viele der sensiblen Informationen schon längst mit anderen Systemen gesammelt werden. So legten Besitzer von Kundenkarten gegen einen minimalen Preisvorteil ihre gesamten persönlichen Kaufinteressen offen, die von den Firmen Gewinn bringend ausgewertet würden. "Da erfolgt kein Aufschrei", rätselt Oertel. "Der Kunde ist sich gar nicht bewusst, was für eine gute Informationsquelle er schon ist."

Risiken ergeben sich der Studie nach nicht nur durch die gigantischen Datensammlungen und die Missbrauchsmöglichkeiten, sondern auch durch die neue technische Abhängigkeit. "Stellen Sie sich mal Tausende Fußball-Fans vor, die wegen eines Chip-Versagens nicht ins Stadion kommen", sagt Oertel.

Bezüglich der Grenzwerte im Rahmen der 26. Bundesimmissionsschutzverordnung ist klar erkennbar, dass einerseits in der Verordnung nur die sogenannten thermischen Werte enthalten sind, obgleich es athermische Werte gibt. Der Bundesverordnungsgeber hat bei dem Erlass der Verordnung über elektromagnetische Felder am 16.12.1996 entscheidend zum Ausdruck gebracht, dass diese Verordnung zu gegebener Zeit nachgeprüft werden sollte. Zwar hat das Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz anscheinend weitere Forschungen in Auftrag gegeben, trotzdem sind zwischenzeitlich acht Jahre vergangen, ohne dass bezüglich der Werte in der 26. Bundesimmissionsschutzverordnung irgendwelche "Veränderungen" oder "Nachbesserungen" erfolgt sind.

Es stellt sich deshalb die Frage, ob nicht eine sogenannte Normenerlassklage wegen rechtswidrigem Unterlassen einer gesetzlichen Rechtsvorschrift angestrengt werden sollte. Diese Klage müsste nach Ansicht des Unterzeichners beim Verwaltungsgericht in Berlin erhoben werden, da Ansprechpartner in diesem Fall die Deutsche Bundesregierung ist. Verklagt werden müsste wahrscheinlich die Bundesregierung, vertreten durch das Bundesumweltministerium. Es müsste gegebenenfalls ein Bürger klagen, der in der Nähe einer Mobilfunkanlage wohnt und einen Nachweis der thermischen Grenzwerte und die Existenz thermischer Grenzwerte vorlegen könnte. Diese sogenannte Normergänzungsklage ist bislang nach Kenntnis des Unterzeichners nicht erhoben worden. Der führende Kommentar zur Verwaltungsgerichtsordnung von Kopp-Schenke, 13. Auflage, verweist in § 47 Band Nr. 14 darauf hin, dass eine derartige Normergänzungsklage als zulässig angesehen werden kann, wenn geltend gemacht wird, dass eine Rechtsvorschrift deshalb fehlerhaft sei, weil sie bestimmte Regelungen nicht enthält, d.h. diese unterlassen hat (z.B. es zu unrecht unterlassen hat, eine bestimmte Regelung selbst zu treffen und es statt dessen der Verwaltung überlässt, Regelungen zu treffen).

Nachdem die 26. Bundesimmissionsschutzverordnung als sogenannte abschließende Regelung der Rechtssprechung der Verwaltungsgerichte verstanden wird, dürfte sie dadurch gegen höherrangiges Recht, insbesondere gegen Art. 3 GG verstoßen. Diese sogenannte Normergänzungsklage könnte auch unter Bezugnahme auf Art. 19 Abs. 4 GG, erhoben werden.

Unsere Kanzlei verfügt bislang auf diesem Sektor nur über Kenntnisse in der Literatur. Wir selbst haben noch nie eine derartige Klage erhoben, könnten uns jedoch vorstellen, dass bei Klageerhebung Bewegung in die Kruste der Struktur der Verwaltungsgerichte und insbesondere ein gewisser Druck auf die Bundesregierung erfolgen würde.

Vielleicht können Sie diese Anregung einmal mit beteiligten Kreisen erörtern; zur Unterstützung der Meinung konnte der Unterzeichner in einer Zeitschrift einen entsprechenden Aufsatz veröffentlichen.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio Supreme Court's chief justice Thursday threw out a challenge to the state's presidential election results.

A lawyer for the 40 voters who sued said he would refile the challenge as early as today.

Chief Justice Thomas Moyer ruled that the request improperly challenged two separate election results. Ohio law only allows one race to be challenged in a single complaint, he said.

The challenge was backed by the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Cliff Arnebeck, a Columbus attorney for the Massachusetts-based Alliance for Democracy, who accused President Bush's campaign of "high-tech vote stealing."

Without listing specific evidence, the complaint alleges that 130,656 votes for Sen. John F. Kerry, D-Mass., in 36 counties were somehow switched to count for Bush.

"After the Americans destroyed our village and killed many of us, we also lost our houses and have nothing to eat. However, we would have endured these miseries and even accepted them, if the Americans had not sentenced us all to death." Before the damage we inflict grows greater, before history's judgment gets worse, before we contaminate the whole world - even before we vote in the next election - we must stop what we're doing. We must stop now.

It's time to listen for a moment not to defense analysts briefing officers, pols or pundits, but to people like Jooma Khan, a grandfather who lives in a village in Laghman Province, in northeastern Afghanistan, who is quoted above. Surely he deserves 30 seconds of our undivided attention. "When I saw my deformed grandson," he told an interviewer in March of 2003, "I realized that my hopes of the future have vanished for good. (This is) different from the hopelessness of the Russian barbarism, even though at that time I lost my older son Shafiqullah. This time, however, I know we are part of the invisible genocide brought on us by America, a silent death from which I know we will not escape."

We're waging war-plus in Afghanistan and Iraq - in effect, nuclear war, with our widespread use of depleted-uranium-tipped shells and missiles. This is no secret. DU, with its extraordinary penetrating power and explode-on-impact capability, helps assure our military dominance everywhere we go. But people like Jooma Khan and his grandson reap its toxic legacy.

So, of course, do our own troops.

Kahn's words are only a sliver of the damning testimony contained in the documents of the International Criminal Tribunal for Afghanistan, a Japanese citizens' initiative that recently concluded its two-year inquiry into the first phase of the Bush Administration's war on terror. But they say everything that we cannot hear. If we could hear Jooma Khan, and others who are sounding the alarm about DU, such as former Livermore Labs geologist Leuren Moret, who testified at the tribunal, there would not be mere thousands of people in the streets of American cities demanding that we stop the war, but hundreds of thousands, or millions - the sort of numbers that turn out inother parts of the world.

The use of DU weaponry is not the extent of our criminalirresponsibility in Afghanistan and Iraq, which led to the tribunal's guilty verdict against George Bush on charges of war crimes, but it's the most chilling. As Moret testified, depleted uranium turns into a infinitesimally fine dust after it explodes; individual particles are smaller than a virus or bacteria. And, "It is estimated that one millionth of a gram accumulating in a person's body would be fatal. There are no known methods oftreatment."

And DU dust is everywhere. A minimum of 500 or 600 tons now litter Afghanistan, and several times that amount are spread across Iraq. In terms of global atmospheric pollution, we've already released the equivalent of 400,000 Nagasaki bombs, Moret said.The numbers are overwhelming, but the potential horrors only get worse. DU dust does more than wreak havoc on the immune systems of those who breathe or touch it; the substance also alters one's genetic code.

Thus, birth defects are way up in Afghanistan since the invasion: children "born with no eyes, no limbs, tumors protruding from their mouths ...deformed genitalia," according to the tribunal report. This ghastly toll on the unborn - on the future - has led investigators to coin the term "silent genocide" to describe the effects of this horrific weapon.

The Pentagon's response to such charges is denial, denial, denial. And the American media is its moral co-conspirator.

But blame is beside the point. Surely even those who still await "conclusive proof" that DU is the cause, or a factor, in the mystery illnesses and birth defects emanating from the war zones, can see the logic in halting its use now.

GLOBAL WARMING AND HUMAN RIGHTS - Oread Daily

The United States is about to be charged with human rights violations for contributing substantially to global warming.

The Inuit, whose homeland stretches from the northeastern tip of Russia across Alaska and northern Canada to parts of Greenland, plan to seek a ruling from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights saying that the actions of the US are threatening their existence.

The Inuit plan is part of a broader shift in the debate over human- caused climate change evident among participants in the 10th round of international talks taking place in Buenos Aires aimed at averting dangerous human interference with the climate system. Inuit leaders said they planned to announce the effort at the climate meeting today. Representatives of poor countries and communities -- from the Arctic fringes to the atolls of the tropics to the flanks of the Himalayas -- say they are imperiled by rising temperatures and seas through no fault of their own. They are casting the issue as no longer simply an environmental problem but as an assault on their basic human rights.

Such a petition could have decent prospects now that industrial countries, including the United States, have concluded in recent reports and studies that warming linked to heat-trapping smokestack and tailpipe emissions is contributing to big environmental changes in the Arctic, a number of experts said. Last month, an assessment of Arctic climate change by 300 scientists for the eight countries with Arctic territory, including the United States, concluded that "human influences" are now the dominant factor.

Sheila Watt-Cloutier, elected chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference (ICC), says the biggest fear was not that warming would kill individuals but that it would be the final blow to a sturdy but suffering culture. "We've had to struggle as a people to keep afloat, to keep our indigenous wisdom and traditions. We're an adaptable people, but adaptability has its limits…Something is bound to give, and it's starting to give in the Arctic, and we're sending that early warning signal to the rest of the world."

Chief Gary Harrison of the Arctic Athabaskan Council, said: "Our homes are threatened by storms and melting permafrost, our livelihoods are threatened by changes to the plants and animals we harvest. Even our lives are threatened, as traditional travel routes become more dangerous."

Attorneys from Earthjustice and the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) are working with the Inuit Circumpolar Conference to file the petition.

Donald Goldberg, a senior attorney from CIEL said at the Conference, "Climate change is a human rights concern on an unprecedented scale. It poses an immediate danger for Inuit and other Arctic inhabitants, but millions of people in mountain areas, low-lying island and coastal regions, and other vulnerable parts of the world will soon face similar threats."

"Protecting human rights is the most fundamental responsibility of governments," said Martin Wagner, International Program managing attorney for Earthjustice. "Climate change is threatening the health, culture, and livelihoods of the Inuit. It is the responsibility of the United States, as the largest source of greenhouse gases, to take immediate action to protect the rights of the Inuit and others around the world."

The Arctic is warming much more rapidly than previously known, at nearly twice the rate as the rest of the globe, according to the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (ACIA), a four-year scientific study conducted by an international team of 300 scientists under the direction of a high-level intergovernmental forum including the United States. Increasing greenhouse gases from human activities are projected to make the Arctic warmer still, according to this unprecedented report.

The Inter-American Human Rights Commission (IAHRC) is an agency of the Organization for American States, of which the US is a member. The Inuit have a voice in the OAS - and thus the commission - through Canada, where they have their own immense and partly autonomous territory of Nunavut, covering 1.9 million square kilometers, a fifth of Canada. But although the IAHRC can issue findings, recommendations, and rulings, it is not a court, and the US has predictably indicated it will not consider itself bound by anything that emerges.

But a ruling could be the basis for lawsuits. If the Inuit gain a ruling that their human rights have been violated, it could form the basis of a case against the US government in an international court, or class-action suits in the US against the government or US energy companies, akin to the suits which have led to multibillion-dollar judgments against the tobacco companies.

One Inuit community of nearly 600 people in the Alaskan barrier island of Shishmaref faces becoming the world's first "global warming refugees". The permafrost on which their homes were built has melted and the ice that used to stop waves reaching the shore has nearly disappeared. Joe Braach, the headteacher of Shishmaref school, says: "When I moved here, the sea was 40ft (12m) from the house. Now it's about 10ft (3m)." Storms have destroyed some of the homes and the community now has little option but to move to the mainland, at a cost of $400m.

Last September I attended the International Scientific Conference on Childhood Leukemia in London. At the end of the weeklong meeting, I was convinced, more than ever, that the time has come for precautionary policies to reduce exposures from power-frequency EMFs.

On further reflection, I realized that the reason simple and low-cost measures have yet to be adopted has less to do with resistance from the electric utility industry (what else would one expect?) than from the public health community.

Mike Repacholi of the World Health Organization¹s (WHO) International EMF Project, has been the #1 foot-dragger. Last month, he released a draft ³Precautionary Framework² with a case study on ELF EMFs. This came close to two years after Repacholi and his assistant Leeka Kheifets endorsed applying the Precautionary Principle to control EMF cancer risks --but they then quickly flip-flopped and withdrew the proposal. Sad to say, they have turned their small corner of the WHO into an industry outpost.

Louis: Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp is also dragging its feet! They ordered a study of EMF levels in Canadian Housing in 1995 and never published it when it came out in 1996! When ELF magnetic fields were classified 2B, I convinced them to give me a copy: they hired me to do a summary which was suppposed to be published as a research highlight, but they still haven't published it.

Original author Andrew Michrowski still has not been paid for his work. He's at pacenet@canada.com . He found very high levels in children's bedrooms. Quebec may have the highest exposure rates in the world as more than 70% of homes use electric heat. Grounding on the water main is a big problem, especially with net current circulating in urban row-house developments. Andrew's paper shows simple ways to reduce exposure. I'm still putting pressure on CMHC: Researcher Christopher Ives cives@cmhc-schl.gc.ca , who hired Andrew, is a good guy, but his boss Robar no longer returns my calls. Seems utilities put too much pressure on him, but as Andrew says, their power lines are rarely the main cause of the problem. Wiring erros by electricians are the main cause!

Important message from France

In the below informative message from Jean-Pierre Lentin take special note about what is mentioned about ICNIRP's Bernard Veyret. This is especially interesting as Veyret will be "guiding" the so-called French/Russian series of studies to verify (or not) the validity of the Russian RF Standards, (and therefore ICNIRP's as well). As I mention in my report on the Russian cell phone conference the credibility of ICNIRP is also at stake in these studies. Allowing ICNIRP to "guide" this research effort I would call a BIAS of the highest order.

I am currently reading Alexander and Ann Shulgin's "PIHKAL", originally published in 1991, a book about their life of research on psychedelic drugs, with no obvious connection with EMF health issues, except this interesting "factoid" :

In year 1966, Alexander Shulgin, a chemistry researcher, was briefly employed by an American military facility, the San Carlos Aerospace Laboratory, at Sunnyvale, California.

This is his account of top-secret on-going research projects at the time :

"Here were arcane projects such as black membrane dynamics, and studies of the influence of gravity on plant growth, the relationships between magnetic fields and the blood-brain barrier, and the effects of radiation on fertility. All were intriguing studies, and all were being run in well equipped laboratories by extremely competent scientists."

Until now, the earliest references found for American military research about EMF effect on blood-brain barrier were 1972 or 1974.

Now, we find that this subject of research was already being studied in 1966 !

Apparently, the American army knows a lot of things about EMF effects on health, things that are still not revealed today...

Well, while I'm at it, here are a few infos on what's happening in France and elsewhere on the "frontline" of EMF & health issues.

Mobile phone operators in France have filed a judiciary complaint against two notorious French anti-masts activists, Etienne Cendrier and Annie Lobe, demanding incredible sums... As French justice is pretty slow, these trials will probably happen within the next year (2005). The activists are being pursued for declarations they have made to the press, so it seems to me that this is in clear violation of freedom of expression rights. Ever an optimist, I think this complaint will not be upheld by the judges, and that this "gagging" strategy from the mobile phone operators will turn out to be viewed as a very bad idea, and seriously tarnish their reputation. We will see...

I must add that Annie Lobe herself did file a complaint against French scientist Bernard Veyret, who heads the "biology commission" at ICNIRP (although he is a physicist !!!). Veyret may be viewed as the "French Michael Repacholi", i.e. the reassuring expert who constantly downplays, in official reports and media communication, all independant research about EMF health-risks. Now, unfortunately, I seriously doubt that Annie's action will be followed by the judges, for lack of scientific evidence, despite the encouraging message she received from W. Ross Adey shortly before his death...

We have a lot of "cancer clusters" in France, linked to mobile phone masts, but despite the valiant efforts of several citizens associations, the plight of those poor people is not being seriously considered by public health authorities. And things won't change in the near future, as our new "health czar" (i.e. director of the "Delegation Generale de la Sante", the top health public institution in France), nominated last year, is none other than Dr. William Dab, who headed for years the "medical department" of EDF (French national electricity distribution), and repeatedly said you can live safely under a high-voltage line...

Right now, the top independant scientific website on EMF health risks in France is <http://csifcem.free.fr/>http://csifcem.free.fr/. Most of their material is in French, but they have several English translations, and I strongly suggest a visit to their pages. These people (Richard Gautier, PhD, Roger Santini, PhD, Pierre Le Ruz, PhD, and Daniel Oberhausen, PhD) are the best French independant experts on EMF & health. They published a "white book" last year on mobile phone health risks, which caused quite a stir.

I might add that my own book, "Ces ondes qui tuent, ces ondes qui soignent" (Waves that kill, waves that heal), on EMF & health, has been republished as a pocket book last May, and has sold so far about 20 000 to 30 000 units, which is a nice figure for France, and makes me one of the most outspoken opponents of EMF pollution in France. Unfortunately there is no English translation. The only abroad publishing so far is.... an Arabic translation !

A more exotic note to finish. My ex-wife, who's a TV documentary director and who did with me a 52 minutes documentary on EMF health risks, "Ces ondes qui nous entourent / Mit Strahlung in die Zukunft), aired on French-German TV channel Arte in 2002, is now a fervent Tibetan Buddhist and is traveling a lot in India. A few weeks ago, she was in the Myrik monastery, in north-eastern India, the world leading center for the Changpa Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. And she was horrified to find that a mobile phone base station is being built on the roof of the "retreat center", i.e. the place where dozens of young Buddhist converts, coming from from all the world, will spent four years in isolation and prayer in order to become Buddhist monks or nuns. That means they will live for 4 years, 24 hours a day, under a phone mast ! We are right now setting up a campaign to have the masts relocated to a safer place. Stay in tune !

My comment: ICNIRP should not be allowed at all to interfere with the russian research, I don't understand why the russians agree to this - would the ICNIRP agree that the russians evaluate their flawed papers? Before the ICNIRP "monitor" anything, their own conflicts of interests needs to be monitored. Veyret himself is involved with deep conflict of interests in France. He is the one who should be judged in court, and not people who expose truth.

May I react to Jean-Pierre Lentin's mail, dated Dec 17, about what is happening in France, in which my name was quoted, but associated with some incorrect information. I wish Jean-Pierre had asked me before sending out this mail, or had at least sent me a copy of it right away, which unfortunately he didn't do.

The complaint I filed is against Bernard Veyret and Rene de Seze. Both of them made scientific communications in 1991 and 1995, recognizing and even explaining the specific effects of EMF in great details, even though they now deny them. The complaint is based on their own scientific documents, as well as on prooves of their financial links with Motorola and consorts.

If the Russian knew about all that, they probably would'nt accept what is being proposed to them.

The judge seemed interested. He let me know he would upheld the complaint after a certain event takes place, which I unfortunately cannot mention. The question is, when ?

All of us are concerned by Veyret's lies, for he is a leading member of ICNIRP, OMS and DG XIII's European Commission, the three of which are responsible for producing "protection" standards and recommendations that make so many people ill all around the world.

Should any of you be willing to file such a complaint in your own country, I'd be glad to let you have the necessary documents (most of them are in French, you will probably have to pay for a certified translation).

Shortly before Ross Adey's death, I spoke to him on the phone, asking if he was aware of what I'd just had a confirmation to : the extremely low frequency of 16 Hz is present in the European GSM. He told me that he knew about that.

Some of you probably know the studies of Ross Adey and Carl Blackman about the calcium ion efflux that takes place at 16 Hz.

Several measurements on a mobile phone during the communcation, with professional instruments, showed not only 16 Hz, but every harmonics (multiple) of 8 Hz, up to 500 Hz. This means that not only 16 Hz, but other frequencies that may provoke this calcium ion efflux, are emitted.

The question is, why ? Probably because of the "american and japanese" electronical components, as per a scientist who participated the the GSM working group more than 20 years ago.

Anyway, I've been lead to interesting findings about the causal link between the calcium ion efflux caused by certain particular frequenciesand the micro-wave syndrom, as well as other diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's desease, diabetes, depression and insomnia.

This scientific data is currently being examined by several experienced seekers. I didn't intend to speak up on the public scene before their validation, but I have to do it now, because of Jean-Pierre Lentin's mail. It's a few months too early but now, you are aware of what is about to happen.

Should some of you want to propose help, I'd be very glad to receive it.

For a Republican and state Bush campaign co-chair Secretary of State responsible for the election in his state who claims that the Presidential election was conducted fairly, Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell is behaving very strangely and suspiciously. Claims of massive fraud and corruption regarding the tally in Ohio are rampant among the progressive blogosphere and are growing daily. The best thing for Secretary Blackwell and other Republicans to do to crush such speculation would be to allow and get behind the efforts to recount the vote, efforts that are clearly provided for in Ohio state law. Instead, it appears that Republicans in the state and nationally are engaging in what can only be interpreted as efforts to fight and delay it and intimidate those who want it. On December 8th, Former Congressman Dan Hamburg was arrested while attempting to deliver a letter to Blackwell from the US House Judiciary Committee with questions about the election. Two days later, Secretary Blackwell issued a surprise executive order stopping the recording of voting information from several minority precincts in Greene County. Two volunteers, Joan Quinn and Eve Roberson, two certified election volunteers, were hand-copying voter discrepancies from precinct voting books on behalf of Green candidate Mr. Cobb and Libertarian candidate Badnarick, who were the original requestors of the Ohio recount. Blackwell's order goes further and specifies that the voting records are to be locked down and declares that they are 'not public'.

Messages left for comment at the Ohio Secretary of State's office were not returned. Instead of providing more confidence in the veracity of Ohio's election, Blackwell's actions are throwing gasoline on the fires of the conspiracy theories out there and are perilously close to being in direct violation of Ohio state law. The secretary has one legitimate course of action open to him. Obey the spirit of Ohio state law, and permit a transparent, efficient, complete and rapid recount process. The voters of Ohio and the nation deserve no less.

Houston’s Spring Independent School District “is equipping 28,000 students with ID badges containing computer chips that are read when the students get on and off school buses,” reported the November 17 New York Times. “The information is fed automatically by wireless phone to the police and school administrators.” Police can monitor children from the time they leave home to their arrival on campus. “In a variation of the concept, a Phoenix school district in November is starting a project using fingerprint technology to track when and where students get on and off buses,” continues the Times. “Last year, a charter school in Buffalo began automating attendance counts with computerized ID badges — one of the earliest examples of what educators said could become a wider trend.” That trend has been referred to as “tagging” schoolchildren, supposedly as a measure to prevent child abductions. The favored method involves radio frequency identification (RFID) computer chip technology “similar to that used to track livestock and pallets of retail shipments.”

Understandably, many older students object to the technology. “It’s too Big Brother for me,” complained 15-year-old Kenneth Haines. “Something about the school wanting to know the exact place and time makes me feel kind of like an animal.”

So in Finland they are saying there are no adverse health effects from mobile phones or masts (but use a hands free, and don't talk too long). In Sweden they recognise EMF-induced EHS, while in England they say it doesn't really exist! In Russia they say science calls for vastly lower emissions than even phones throw out, while WHO says there's nothing other than heating effects. Back in Norway they know what our farmers know, but the RSPB dsimisses! With TETRA at least, we have come to know all about smaller birds disappearing from our gardens.

One day we'll all know: let's hope it isn't too late.

It was interesting to read about the Golden Plover behaviour. Here in Norway they don't erect mobile phone mast near fox farms or mink farms. It seems that the animals become very distressed. A few years ago a mobile phone mast was erected about a 1000 metre above a regular breeding site for a pair of our local Eagle Owls. That was the last year they were seen in the area.
