Hartz IV: CDU kritisiert Ein-Euro-Jobs

20.08.04

Soaring Cancer Rates Blamed On Chemicals

Fair Use Statement

Source: Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 4, 2004

The Preventable Cancer Epidemic

Cancer has become such an epidemic that 41% of Canadian males and nearly 38% of Canadian females will develop some form of the disease, and 27% of males and 23% of females will die from it.

While the medical profession and cancer research institutions attribute most of the cancer increase to genetic and lifestyle factors, the authors of a new CCPA study assert that carcinogens in our air, water, food, and workplaces are significant causes of cancer.

Economist Robert Chernomas and researcher Lissa Donner draw from reputable studies and findings to conclude that many cancers could be prevented if the cancer-causing chemicals were removed from our environment. They note that in 2001, Canadian industries admitted releasing 18,455,237 kilograms of known carcinogens into our air, soil, and water. "Such industries have been called 'merchants of death' for putting profits ahead of human health"--but they have been aided and abetted by a lax regulatory and enforcement system that allows such deadly pollution to continue.

The authors are critical of the main objective of the fight against cancer, which is to find treatments or cures rather than promoting preventive measures. "Industries have argued that for every carcinogen there is a safe level of exposure. But our guiding principle should be that the safest exposure is no exposure."

Chernomas and Donner argue that the war on cancer can be won, but that the social, economic and political changes that are needed will require collective action by the environmental, occupational health and nutrition movements. Acting together, they can "stem the tide of cancer that is sweeping across Canada."

Deal Hudson "surrendered" his tenure at Fordham University in 1994 after "exchanging sexual favors" with a female undergrad. Ten years later, he was the go-to man for George W. Civil Resistance and the Prevention of State Crimes

by Francis A. Boyle

Beginning with the Reagan/Bush administrations' ascent to power in January of 1981, the United has demonstrated little if any respect for international law, international organizations, and human rights, let alone appreciation of the requirements for maintaining international peace and security. Instead there has been a comprehensive assault upon the integrity of the international legal order. The Reagan administration's foreign policy represented a deviation from basic rules of international deportment and civilized behavior that the United States government had pioneered in promoting for the world community. In many instances elements of the Reagan foreign policy constituted criminal activity under well-recognized principles of both international law and U.S. domestic law, specifically the Nuremberg Charter, the Nuremberg Judgment, and the Nuremberg Principles.

Among the responses to the Reagan administration's attack upon the international and domestic legal orders, was an upsurge in civil resistance activities protesting against U.S. international policies that grossly violated international law and human rights. These citizen protests led to numerous arrests and prosecutions by federal, state, and local governmental authorities all over the country. Soon thereafter, this author began to give advice, counsel and assistance to individuals and groups who had engaged in acts of civil resistance directed against several aspects of the U.S. government's foreign policy: the Nuclear Freeze Movement, the Sanctuary Movement, Greenpeace International, the Anti-Apartheid Movement, the Plowshares Movement, the Pledge of Resistance Campaign, and Gulf War resisters, among others. I also participated in the defense of individuals who engaged in civil resistance protesting against the U.S. government's policies on nuclear weapons and nuclear deterrence, Central America and the Caribbean, Southern Africa, Europe, the Middle East, etc. who were independent of formal movements.

In addition, I have also helped defend active duty members of United States armed forces who were persecuted and prosecuted because of their acts of conscience and principle. For example, in the fall of 1990, I served as Counsel for the successful defense of U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Jeff Paterson, the first military resister to Bush Sr.'s Gulf War.

Then I represented U.S.M.C. Lance Corporal David Mihaila in a successful effort to obtain his discharge from the Marine Corps as a Conscientious Objector during Gulf War I. Corporal Mihaila was the Clerk of the Court for the Paterson court-martial proceedings and according to him was motivated to apply for CO status as a result of my oral argument for Corporal Paterson.

In 1991 I served as Counsel for the defense of Captain Dr. Yolanda Huet-Vaughn, who was court-martialed by the U.S. Army in part because of her refusal to administer experimental vaccines to soldiers destined to fight in Gulf War I.

Later, I served as Counsel for the defense of U.S. Army Captain Lawrence Rockwood, who was court-martialed for his heroic efforts to stop torture in Haiti after the Clinton administration had illegally invaded that country in 1994. Most recently, in 2004 I served as Counsel for the defense of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Camilo Mejia, the first military resister to the current Iraq War.

Upon their incarcerations, both Capt. Dr. Huet-Vaughn and Staff Sgt. Mejia were quickly designated as Prisoners of Conscience by Amnesty International. Many Americans are unaware of the existence of American Prisoners of Conscience or Political Prisoners in our own prisons in the United State.

In fact, there are many. Both Captain Dr. Yolanda Huet-Vaughn and Staff Sgt. Camilo Mejia are America's equivalent to Vaclav Havel, Andrei Sakharov, Wei Jingsheng, Aung San Suu Kyi, and others who became powerful symbols of the resistance to injustice.

They are the archetypal American Heroes whom we should be bringing into our schools and teaching our children to emulate, not the wholesale purveyors of violence and bloodshed adulated by the U.S. government and the media.

One generation ago the peoples of the world asked themselves: Where were the "good" Germans? Well, there were some good Germans. The Lutheran theologian and pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer was only the most prominent exemplar of someone who led a life of principled opposition to the Nazi-terror state even unto death.

Today the peoples of the world are likewise asking themselves: Where are the "good" Americans who are prepared to stand up for principle in the face of state terror carried out on a world scale? Well, there are some good Americans. Some of them face arrest and jail for protesting against United States targeting of civilians with weapons of mass destruction (WMD) whose power for human extermination far exceeds even the wildest fantasies of Hitler and the Nazis. Others for protesting against illegal U.S. military interventions around the world since September 11, 2001.

As my friend and colleague former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark once said: "Our jails are filling up with saints!"

This book both subjects U.S. foreign policy to scrutiny from the perspective of international law and human rights, as well as telling their stories of protest against inhumanity and injustice.

This book comes at a critical time in the history of the United States of America as a constitutional Republic with a commitment to the rule of law and human rights, both at home and abroad. In international legal terms, the Bush Jr. administration should be viewed as constituting an ongoing criminal conspiracy under international criminal law in violation of the Nuremberg Charter, the Nuremberg Judgment, and the Nuremberg Principles because of its formulation and undertaking of wars of aggression, crimes against humanity, and war crimes that are legally akin to those perpetrated by the former Nazi regime in Germany.

As a consequence, American citizens possesses the basic right under international law and United States domestic law, including the American Constitution, to engage in acts of civil resistance in order to prevent, impede, thwart, or terminate ongoing criminal activities perpetrated by U.S. government officials in their conduct of foreign affairs policies and military operations purported to relate to defense and counter-terrorism.

This same right of civil resistance extends pari passu to all citizens of the world community of states. Everyone around the world has both the right and the duty under international law to resist ongoing criminal activities perpetrated by the Bush Jr. administration and its foreign accomplices in allied governments. If not so restrained, the Bush Jr. administration could very well precipitate a Third World War.

The time for preventive action is now. Civil resistance is the way to go. People power can overcome power politics. Popular movements have succeeded in toppling tyrannical, dictatorial and authoritarian regimes throughout former Communist countries in Eastern Europe, as well as in Asia, and most recently in Latin America. It is time once again to exercise People Power in the United States of America.

Despite the best efforts by the Bush Jr. Leaguers to the contrary, we American Citizens still have our First Amendment Rights: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Association, Freedom of Assembly, Freedom to Petition our Government for the Redress of these massive Grievances, Civil Resistance, etc.

We are going to have to start vigorously exercising all of our First Amendment Rights right now. We must use them or else, as the saying goes, we will lose them. We must act not only for the good of the Peoples of Southwest Asia, but for our future, that of our children, that of our nation as a democratic society committed to the rule of law and the U.S. Constitution. This book will give the reader the intellectual tools necessary to battle the international and domestic legal nihilism of the Bush Jr. administration; the Ashcroft Police State; America's Nuclear and Hydrocarbon Empires; and the U.S. Power Elite before they run completely amok all over the world as well as here at home. The Nazis had their "homeland" too.

The Athenians lost their democracy. The Romans lost their Republic. And if we Americans do not act now we could lose our Republic. The United States of America is not immune to the laws of history!

Say "No" to Jumbo Proposed Glacier Resort

#107 WILD NORTHWEST, August 2, 2004
A Message from Northwest Ecosystem Alliance

Keeping the Northwest Wild

Stop a Massive Resort in the Heart of British Columbia's Grizzly Bear Wildlands

Just say "no" to Jumbo proposed Glacier Resort
http://www.ecosystem.org/act/107.html

For 13 years the heart of BC grizzly bear habitat in the Kootenay region of southeast B.C. has been threatened by a proposed new four season resort development, called the Jumbo Glacier Resort. And for 13 years thousands of local residents and public officials, scientists, First Nations, and local heli-ski operators have protected essential grizzly bear habitat by staving off this massive boondoggle. But the developers haven't let up and the proposal still stands. At the close of the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) public comment period, thousands of Canadians opposed Jumbo. On August 3, the EAO submits their review of public comment and technical issues to BC Ministers, who will make a decision on the proposal by September 17, 2004.

Your voice is needed now to add to the burden of weight against this loony proposal. British Columbia counts on American tourists to spend their dollars on recreation in BC, and American opinions make a difference. Let the BC government know that you strongly oppose and will not patronize this130,000 acre required by this resort-- of main grizzly bear habitat and travel corridor adjoining the Purcell Wilderness and Banff National Park. Jumbo Creek Valley has superb wilderness and wildlife qualities that will be lost forever if this resort is built.

Write the BC government now to put this proposal where the overwhelming majority of the locals want it: in the scrap heap of bad ideas.

Send your letter of opposition straight to Premier Campbell and Ministers now though an easy fax system. Go to:
http://www.jumbowild.com/takeaction .

For more information, go to

Please let us know that you took action. And thank you for lending your voice to protect the grizzly bear!

No matter who flees
From the fray
No matter who
Loses interest
Or Faith

At my efforts
No matter who mocks me
Or spits upon me
No matter what barbs
Are flung at me
In disregard for what I believe
No matter how slim the chance
No matter how high the mountain
No matter how mighty the enemy
I WILL NEVER SURRENDER
And while I yet breathe
And think
And stand
And hope
While I live
Tyranny is not safe
As long as ONE MIND

11. Manifesting their continuing commitment to world domination by ordering, directing and condoning violent regime change in Haiti in March 2004 to replace the independent, elected democratic President Jean Bertrand Aristide with a U.S. selected and controlled neo Duvalierist surrogate causing growing violence, hundreds of deaths and further impoverishment of the Haitian people.

12. Threatening the sovereignty and independence of nations, and acting to change regimes that refuse to yield to U.S. demands for economic subservience and political control for U.S. corporate and government interests, including most prominently Cuba, Iran, a divided Korea, the Philippines, Syria, Sudan and Venezuela; and supporting Israel's illegal occupation, brutalization and expanding settlement of Palestine in defiance of the United Nations, international law and world opinion; all of which adds to international anger and violence against the United States and its citizens.

13. Destroying the sovereignty, right to self determination, cultural integrity and control of its own resources of Iraq and its peoples by imposing an interim government headed by a long time C.I.A. asset who directed violence against Iraqi civilians for the U.S. in the 1990's; and manipulating procedures for the imposition of a new Constitution drafted by and installation of a new government chosen through controlled electoral processes and subservient to the will and command of the U.S. government.

14. Usurping the war powers delegated in the constitution to the Congress to pursue wars of aggression and other unlawful military actions; and attempting to pack the federal courts with judges committed to ideologies in conflict with the Constitution of the United States to achieve judicial decisions supporting those ideologies.

15. Systematically weakening fundamental human rights globally and the Bill of Rights of the U.S. Constitution within the U.S. enabling U.S. forces to unlawfully seize individuals in 100 countries, including U.S. citizens and arrest thousands of aliens in the U.S. and hold them, transport them, torture many, deny all access to courts to determine the legality of such seizures, arrest and treatment.

16. Making Guantanamo [U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay?] a symbol of U.S. power to imprison and abuse persons on the soil of a foreign sovereign nation, Cuba, against its will and to publicize U.S. contempt for human rights by displaying its power to arbitrarily seize, confine and abuse persons without revealing who they are, any charges against them, or what their future may be, placing U.S. power above all laws, international and national, and beyond the reach of all courts, including those of the U.S.

17. Giving economic preferences to favored corporations and business interests to extract enormous profits in both war and peace sectors of the economy from impoverished Iraq and U.S. taxpayers.

18. Systematically utilizing, controlling, directing, manipulating, misinforming and restricting press and media coverage and deliberately presenting false and misleading reports to obtain support for U.S. military and political and actions; and to deprive the American people of knowledge essential to develop an informed opinion , which is essential to democratic processes and elections.

19. All for the purpose of dominating, controlling, and exploiting Iraq and other non compliant nations by military force and economic coercion.

In addition to full accountability for the foregoing crimes and full reparation to victims, the offenses constitute "high Crimes and Misdemeanors" under Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution of the United States requiring the removal from office of all the participating civil Officers of the United States upon impeachment for and conviction for their acts.

Arbeitslose als Sicherheitskräfte in den Irak

20.08.2004

Border buffoonery

by Cathy Young

Hawaii Reporter

08/19/04

In this brave new world of global terrorism, the issue of reliable border control has acquired a new urgency. Yet there are also well-founded concerns that in the effort to keep out malefactors we will sacrifice so many of our liberties and alienate so many people around the world that the terrorists, to use a well-worn phrase, will indeed have won. The debate on safety vs. privacy, particularly in airline travel, has been raging for years, ever since the airports first installed metal detectors and luggage screening...

Attorneys General sue polluters

by Robert Levy

Fox News

08/19/04

Eight state attorneys general have joined together to sue the nation's five largest public utilities. The goal: to force a 3 percent annual reduction in carbon dioxide emissions over the coming decade. The problem, however, is that none of the utilities are located in any of the eight states, and that the AG's have neither the authority nor the responsibility to act in the broader national interest -- as they are claiming to do. In fact, the party with that authority and responsibility -- the U.S. government -- has enacted federal statutes that preempt state laws. ...

Today, Congress is considering another bill, introduced by Sens. John McCain [R-AZ] and Joseph Lieberman [D-CT], that would cap CO2 emissions. The public interest is best served when federal and state regulation is complementary, not duplicative or conflicting...

Where have all the big ideas gone?

by Ted Halstead

New America Foundation

08/15/04

Each era in American history is defined by a couple of big ideas: the Homestead Act, the GI Bill, Social Security, the Marshall Plan or the race to space. Such major social or economic innovations are usually advanced by our political leaders in response to national turning points. Few would disagree that the United States has reached another
historical juncture. Where, then, have all the big -- and good -- ideas gone? ...

So here are seven big ideas for improving our national condition, each of which defies the conventional political spectrum and could be ripe for the picking by either party: * Every baby a trust-fund baby. * Universal coverage for universal responsibility. * Tax consumption, not work. * End all farm subsidies. * Family-friendly workplaces. * A race to energy independence. * Building a global middle class." Isn't this a democracy?

Before attending a rally to hear Vice President Dick Cheney, citizens in New Mexico were required to sign a political loyalty oath approved by the Republican National Committee. 'I, (full name) ... do herby (sic) endorse George W. Bush for reelection of the United States.'

The form noted: 'In signing the above endorsement you are consenting to use and release of your name by Bush-Cheney as an endorser of President Bush.' Around the country, Bush is campaigning at events billed as 'Ask President Bush.' Only supporters are allowed entrance. Talking points are distributed to questioners.

In Traverse City, Mich., a 55-year-old social studies teacher who wore a small Kerry sticker on her blouse had her ticket torn up at the door...

'Never mind,' the feds now say to Yaser Esam Hamdi, the alleged enemy combatant whose case was decided in June by the U.S. Supreme Court. Never mind that we threw you into the brig and then fought like wildcats to deprive you of fundamental constitutional rights. Never mind that we told federal judges that you were a dangerous enemy of the United States. Now, it seems, the government is negotiating with Hamdi's attorneys for his release from confinement.

According to reports, Hamdi would renounce his U.S. citizenship, move to Saudi Arabia and accept some travel restrictions, as well as some monitoring by Saudi officials, in exchange for his freedom. In addition, he may have to agree not to file a civil rights lawsuit against the federal government...

The Nanny Psychology, part 2

The nanny attitude has become synonymous with the way many of us think about our government. We elect individuals and then come to think of them as capable of controlling everything, making decisions about what is right and wrong, good and bad for us, and providing us with security.

The direct result of such sloppy thinking and careless compliance can only be an ever-expanding government, higher taxes, and more intrusion into every aspect of private life, until we are left with the ugly choice of becoming dull, obedient slaves, or having to dredge up our last gasp of individuality and force ourselves to revolt...

Deputies Defend Using Taser Gun On Charley Evacuee

Local 10 News

08/18/04

Deputies are defending their actions a day after using a Taser gun on a man who had evacuated during Hurricane Charley. Lee County [FL] sheriff's deputies said they used the Taser gun to get the man under control after he refused to stop and turn around at a roadblock. The man was trying to get back over a bridge to his home on Fort Myers Beach. Deputies said when he ignored their orders to stop, they shot him with the Taser gun, pulled him from his minivan, and arrested him. The incident was partially caught on home video.

A crowd formed around the scene and voices can be heard on tape yelling, 'Leave him alone,' 'That is so wrong,' and 'Come on, man, he's frustrated.' The man had three children in the vehicle with him. Many in the crowd felt for the man who hadn't seen his home in days...

Lancet: Abu Ghraib doctors knew of torture

Guardian [UK]

08/20/04

Army doctors at the Abu Ghraib prison west of Baghdad falsified medical records to cover up torture and human rights abuses perpetrated on Iraqi detainees, the British medical journal the Lancet reported today. It called for a full inquiry into reform of the military health system to address the failure of army medical staff to live up to their code of ethics and a professional obligation to care for their patients. ...

The journal published an article by Steven Miles, a professor of bioethics at the University of Minnesota, saying that American army doctors and nurses had been fully aware of torture and degrading treatment at Abu Ghraib, but did not blow the whistle before an official inquiry began in January."

US general's 'Satan' speeches broke rules

A United States army general violated Pentagon rules with speeches in which he described the war on terror as a Christian battle against Satan, and he should be punished, according to an inspector-general's report revealed today. The Department of Defense's watchdog agency said Lieutenant General William Boykin, a top-ranking intelligence officer, used official data in some of the 23 religious-oriented speeches he gave after January 2002 which should have been cleared by the Pentagon. Boykin sparked a firestorm last October after giving speeches while in uniform in which he referred to the war on terror as a battle with Satan and said America had been targeted "because we're a Christian nation".

Boykin was obliged to clear the speeches, given "the sensitive nature of his remarks concerning US policy and the likelihood that he would be perceived by his audiences as a DOD spokesman based on his official position and his appearance in uniform", the report said.

Secrets of Porter Goss: CIA, Fraud & Patriot Act

There are sinister implications in the fact that various provisions of the so-called Patriot II Act are being surreptitiously slipped into other legislation. Attorney General John Ashcroft has admitted as much, saying that it will be used to expand law enforcement powers “upon the passage of all provisions of Patriot II.” This would lead one to believe that they’re going to try to break it up and slip it in.

Otherwise he would have said, “upon the passage of the act,” not “all provisions.” That gives you some clue as to what the Bushonian strategy is with the bill. Ashcroft then went on to say that he would sign a so-called ‘Blanket Letter of National Security Findings,’ which would make the issuance of secret arrest warrants possible and eliminate the need for law enforcement to request individual letters from the Department of Justice or relevant agencies regarding actions against groups or individuals.

There are currently six bills pending in Congress that would take provisions from Patriot Act II -- HR-3179, the Anti-Terrorism Intelligence Tools Improvement Act of 2003; HR-3037, Anti-Terrorism Tools Enhancement Act of 2003; HR2934 and S1604, Terrorist Penalties Enhancement Act of 2003; HR3040 and S1606, Pre-trial Detention and Lifetime Supervision of Terrorists Act of 2003.

New CIA Director Wants Power to Spy On, Arrest, U.S. Citizens

Rep. Porter Goss, President Bush’s nominee to head the CIA, recently introduced legislation that would give the president new authority to direct CIA agents to conduct law-enforcement operations inside the United States—including arresting American citizens.

The legislation, introduced by Goss on June 16 and touted as an “intelligence reform” bill, would substantially restructure the U.S. intelligence community by giving the director of Central Intelligence (DCI) broad new powers to oversee its various components scattered throughout the government.

But in language that until now has not gotten any public attention, the Goss bill would also redefine the authority of the DCI in such a way as to substantially alter—if not overturn—a 57-year-old ban on the CIA conducting operations inside the United States. The language contained in the Goss bill has alarmed civil-liberties advocates. It also today prompted one former top CIA official to describe it as a potentially “dramatic” change in the guidelines that have governed U.S. intelligence operations for more than a half century.

“This language on its face would have allowed President Nixon to authorize the CIA to bug the Democratic National Committee headquarters,” Jeffrey H. Smith, who served as general counsel of the CIA between 1995 and 1996, told NEWSWEEK. “I can’t imagine what Porter had in mind.”...

Messages Can Be Forever

Short Electronic Notes May Not Fade into Obscurity

I'm surprised that it's just dawning on people that text messages sent via wirelessly enabled PDAs, pagers and, of course, mobile phones can be retrieved and read by third parties. At some point, people have to get over the idea that what they do electronically — e-mail, text messaging, surfing Web pages — is ephemeral. Those ones and zeros may occupy very little physical space, but they are eminently retrievable and could dog you for decades. I'm not just talking about messages, either.

Your voting record on something as silly as American Idol is likely stored on a server somewhere. So, what if you start using the mobile phone to weigh in on something more important, like your opinion about the upcoming presidential election? You may suddenly be pigeonholed as a Democrat or Republican supporter.

I'm sure nothing short of some sort of apocalyptic event will ever stop people from text messaging. So instead we'll be left to look to a new generation for the first SMS message archivists. Think about it. Somewhere, right now, a future senator or even president is messaging her boyfriend about a trip to the mall and worries over a new pimple. If these messages have some longevity or can be retrieved at any point in the future, then they can be added to the presidential library in the area marked "Early Electronic Transmissions."

Wiretapping the Web

A literal reading of electronic eavesdropping laws—coupled with a new FCC proposal—may make it easier for Washington to watch you online:

We've been told since the dawn of the Internet that the e-mail we send and receive on company time is fair game for our employers to monitor. Many took for granted, though, that e-mail sent from private accounts was just that: private. How naive. As if hacking worries weren't enough, two recent legal developments have raised further fears among Web privacy advocates in the United States. In one case, the Federal Communications Commission voted 5-0 last week to prohibit businesses from offering broadband or Internet phone service unless they provide Uncle Sam with backdoors for wiretapping access. And in a separate decision last month, a federal appeals court decided that e-mail and other electronic communications are not protected under a strict reading of wiretap laws.

Taken together, these decisions may make it both legally and technologically easier to wiretap Internet communications, some legal experts told NEWSWEEK. “All the trends are toward easier to tap,” says Kevin Bankston, an attorney at the nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation...

Spy on Your Neighbor for the Homeland

Tattletale Society Explodes: Spy on Your Neighbor for the Homeland

Just like in 1984, citizens are encouraged to spy on their neighbors to seek out terrorist activities and protect the homeland. We see multiple articles every day that report citizen tattletale squads being recruited by the government. If you read deeper into the articles, in many cases they say that the citizens are there to fight terror and crime. Homeland Security says their putting up cameras to fight terror and crime. All this creates is an atmosphere where people are arrested for little or no reason. Your neighbor (hopped up on Prozac) who is spying on you looking for terrorism instead smells marijuana and calls the police...
