Re: Something's in the air - Escaping electromagnetic radiation.

Dear Editor,

Thank you for publishing the story "Something's in the air" in the September 2007 edition of your health magazine. Electro magnetic radiation is an extremely important subject because it is harming the health of a surprising number of Canadians. I am grateful that you brought this topic to the attention of your readers. The story highlighted the adverse health effects that I have suffered because of electro magnetic radiation and the educational efforts in which I am currently engaged.

I am very concerned because a headline within the story, which did not originate with me, is so potentially harmful to children that I feel that I must respond. On page fifty nine, there is a photograph of a very young child holding a cell phone to his head and a caption that says, "Don't allow children under eight years of age to own a cellphone."

I have read and collected many scientific reports that indicate serious harm to human health from cell phone radiation and other sources of electromagnetic radiation. In particular, those reports indicate that the danger for a child using a cell phone is much greater than it is for an adult. The high level of electro-magnetic radiation that a cell phone emits against the head may cause adverse effects that could harm a child for the rest of its life. Based upon a great amount of research that I have read, I recommend that no child under the age of sixteen be allowed to own or use a cell phone for anything other than emergencies. I would also suggest that allowing children under the age of sixteen to regularly use a cell phone may best be described as parental negligence, or possibly child abuse. It is my hope that you will publish a clarification with this information.

Microwave cellular telephone technology is dangerous and is causing serious harm to health. It should not be used for child's play or general entertainment. It may take a few years before electromagnetic radiation exposure starts to show harmful results, but the potential repercussions can be devastating. Although these harmful effects may not be apparent now, why would any parent be willing to allow such a serious medical experiment on the future health of their child?

Yours sincerely,

Martin Weatherall

EU calls for urgent action on wi-fi radiation

Europe's top environmental watchdog is calling for immediate action to reduce exposure to radiation from Wi-Fi, mobile phones and their masts.

It suggests that delay could lead to a health crisis similar to those caused by asbestos, smoking and lead in petrol.

The warning, from the EU's European Environment Agency (EEA) follows an international scientific review which concluded that safety limits set for the radiation are "thousands of times too lenient", and an official British report last week which concluded that it could not rule out the development of cancers from using mobile phones.

Cancer clusters found around mobile phone masts

By Sue Mueller

Sep 15, 2007 - 11:43:15 AM

Saturday September 15, 2007 (Foodconsumer.org) -- Phone masts have been linked to clusters of cancer and other serious health problems, raising fears that wireless technology may pose a risk to certain populations, timeonline.co.uk reported on April 22 this year.

According to the story, seven clusters of cancer and other serious illnesses such as brain hemorrhages and high blood pressure have been found within a radius of 400 yards of mobile phone masts.

Concerns prompt action over wi-fi

Sep 15 2007

by Steffan Rhys, Western Mail

THE first code of practice by a council in Wales relating to the use of wireless broadband in schools could be sanctioned on Monday as parents say they must be informed if a school is using technology which is “irradiating” children.

Wireless broadband, or wi-fi, enables computer users to access the internet without being connected to a cable and is estimated to be in use in more than half of primary schools and two thirds of secondary schools in the UK.

It has been described by the Department for Education and Skills as a “magical” system but scientists have increasingly said it emits radiation similar to that of a mobile phone mast, which has been linked to cancer and brain damage.

Mast Sanity: Report is flawed

Thursday, 13 Sep 2007 11:40

A report claiming that short term mobile phone use and masts do not increase the risk of cancer and brain damage has been dismissed by the organisation Mast Sanity.

Mobile phones 'could cause brain tumours in long-term users'

Mobile phones: Some increased risk for long-term users

Britain's biggest-ever study into mobile phone safety has warned that a long-term cancer risk cannot be ruled out.

Scientists say possible dangers to children are also unknown - despite the millions of pounds spent during six years of research.

As a result, investigators say they cannot update "precautionary" advice issued in 2005. That warned parents to limit children's use of mobiles and said those under eight should not use them at all.
