Long-term effects of radiation dose on inflammatory markers in atomic bomb survivors

I have NEWS for these researchers!!!! Non-ionizing radiation causes identical "aging changes!!!"

Those who belong to your group and others in regard to being EMF/EMR activists know my story but I need to emphasize a part of it regarding this new (note "2005") report re immune/inflammation/aging!!!!

My two grandsons' rare immune were rare because they had subclass deficiencies IgG 1 and 3. Such deficiencies signify "AGING.....!!!" Ironically we were even told such a deficiency wouldn't/shouldn't be found in children under the age of 10 years. The boys were infants/toddlers at time of diagnosis. As you can see, this report states the A-bomb exposures accelerated aging by about 9 years!!!! The boys also had problems making antibodies and other inflammatory problems.

If persons around the world don't start to demand the public be informed that sleeping in close proximity to electric appliances/devices is causing serious health problems and also that homes and schools should be checked for "dirty electricity" on wiring see http://www.stetzerelectric.com and/or http://www.electricalpollution.com regarding filters and meter to measure such pollution, the health effects of "aging" due to chronic, prolonged EMF/EMR exposures will soon overwhelm economies around-the-world!!! Soon "no one" will have enough strength, brain-power, etc. to run governments not to mention sustain/maintain adequate military protection!!!! Take care -

RERF Report No. 27-03

Long-term effects of radiation dose on inflammatory markers in atomic bomb survivors

Hayashi T, Morishita Y, Kubo Y, Kusunoki Y, Hayashi I, Kasagi F, Hakoda M, Kyoizumi S, Nakachi K
Am J Med 118(1):83-6, 2005 (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc.

Summary

Exposure to atomic bomb (A-bomb) radiation has had long-lasting health effects in survivors, even after a half century and more. In this study we investigated the association between radiation dose and sub-clinical inflammatory status and/or immunoglobulin production in A-bomb survivors in Hiroshima. Four hundred and forty two participants were randomly selected from a long-term epidemiological cohort of A-bomb survivors. Peripheral blood samples were assayed for inflammatory markers and antibody levels. We observed a statistically significant increase with increased radiation dose in the following markers:

(1) plasma levels of inflammatory markers TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma, and IL-10,
(2) erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and
(3) total Ig, IgA, and IgM levels.

We observed no significant radiation dose effects for IgG and IgE levels. Since both radiation and aging were associated with increases in most of the inflammatory markers investigated in this study, we estimated the effect of radiation in terms of age acceleration. Judging from the ESR and the levels of TNF-alpha, IL-10, and total Ig, exposure to 1 Gy was equivalent to an increase in age of about 9 years. These results suggest that A-bomb radiation may contribute as much to the production of inflammatory markers and antibodies as aging does, implying that radiation exposure may accelerate aging of inflammatory status.

Roy: This is more confirmation that EMF's/EMR promote "identical changes" as occur in cases of chronic, low dose ionizing radiation. Dr. Johansson is willing to replicate findings in grandsons as well as my guinea pig studies but can't do this without funding. Take care - Joanne

Forward 5-23-05 from Prof. Olle Johansson (email ollejohansson@neuro.ki.se):

This is exactly our working hypothesis, that EMFs - of various types and forms - wear down the inflammatory protective system or accelerate aging of it's status.

Roger: Your comment below brings to mind Dr. Neil Cherry's excellent work in June 2000 titled "Evidence Electromagnetic Radiation is Genotoxic......."

http://www.emfguru.org/EMF/genotoxic/Genotoxic-EMR-paper.htm

Dr. Cherry's quote by Burke is "right on!!!"

"Our frame of reference determines what we look at and how we look. And as a consequence, this determines what we find." Burke J, The Day the Universe Changed, 1985

Email exchanges regarding rare immune in my grandsons (signifying "aging") and the new article regarding A-bomb survivors and evidence re aging of immune function are also copied/attached. Children and parents around-the-world need this help!!! How many more will be diagnosed with Leukaemia this year only to die because they are unable to fight the ravages of treatment that has very little or no chance of success because "no one" is telling them they need to practice prudent EMR avoidance measures?

The fact that government/industry is not informing the public will continue to cause problems for everyone

I am forwarding copy of an email I received from a concerned mom which is self-explanatory. I have contacted Nancy and offered my "non-expert opinion" that she not have anyone sleep in the bedroom she describes. Fortunately she and her husband do have a second bedroom in the apartment and now plan to use the room with electric meters as their computer room. She is looking into mitigation possibilities also. I referred her to several websites including http://www.electricalpollution.com and http://www.stetzerelectric.com .

I just want to thank you and to let you know that all of your hard work is "very much appreciated!!!" It is so very nice to communicate with a person before their children get sick from sleeping close to electric meters/clock radios, etc.!!!

Nancy told me the utility person she spoke to informed her that EMF's are not a concern; however, they were sending someone out to take milligauss readings today, May 19. The fact that government/industry is not informing the public will continue to cause problems for everyone "not savvy enough" to research such concerns themselves as Nancy is doing.

The issue of where even adults sleep is very important but infants don't have a chance and may even die before Leukemia develops all because of the corruption and greed that keeps such specific information from the people.

One out of each set of two guinea pigs died within 30 days of their cage being placed on our back bedroom wall opposite the electric meter!!!

Professor Olle Johansson from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden is also working with me to bring more attention to the critical situation of nightime EMR exposures with "a focus" on dangers of electrical appliances/meters/devices in close proximity to particularly the head of a bed. Take care - Joanne

Email received from Nancy (5-17-05):

Hi Joanne,

I just read your article in Omega news about the guinea pigs. It's a sad story but eye opening. I hope you don't mind me writing but I'm very concerned about where I'm living. My husband and baby and I are moving into an apartment where one of the rooms has a wall of electrical meters on the outside of the house but this wall of eletrical meters almost covers the whole area of one room. We were considering using this as a bedroom. The outside of the house is a very thin stucco. Would you advice against sleeping in this room?

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

The Precautionary Principle and Regulation of Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields

http://www.terra.es/personal/kirke1/noti65/hrbc.htm

Basic Considerations

ICEMS (International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety)

Regulation and limitation of exposure to nonionizing radiation was introduced for some occupations and military applications in the 1950s, but exposure standards for the general public and broader occupational categories were not established until the 1980s. At that time distinctly different approaches to standardsetting were applied in the Western World as compared to the Soviet Union, Eastern European countries and China. Efforts of WHO to reconcile the different approaches have not been successful. While the two approaches have some similarities, still there are considerable discrepancies in procedure and resultant guideline levels of most Western countries as compared to Russia, China and Eastern European countries. Furthermore, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium and regional authorities of other countries apply guideline and limit values that are based on still other procedures and considerations.

There is considerable public concern in many countries, especially about possible long-term effects of EMFs, that is at least partially due to these discrepancies and the legitimate scientific controversy surrounding them.

Basis for Limiting Exposure to EMFs

A fundamental error of reasoning can be demonstrated in numerous statements of international and national EMF standard-setting organizations and committees. Its essence is the assumption that science-based, ‘objective’ guidelines have to rely on ‘established’ evidence only. It is significant that none of these documents that abundantly make use of the term ‘established’ make any effort to define it.

Furthermore, this ‘scientific’ and ‘objective’ method is often contrasted to the falsely labeled ‘political’, ‘subjective’ and ‘ultimately arbitrary’ one that is related to the precautionary principle.

For two reasons this line of argument is faulty.

First, any effort to define how results become ‘established’ must acknowledge that the process includes an arbitrary aspect of subjective acceptance. Second, the derivation of an exposure guideline itself can never be based solely on science, i.e. on empirical data and a sound theory that has withstood serious tests to refute it. Guideline decisions are made that contain subjective elements of values or policy.

An illustrative example is the application of safety factors to adjust for variations in environmental conditions and susceptibility in the population that should be protected. These factors are rarely based on evidence and rather introduced by convention or even economical considerations and technical feasibility. In risk assessment all the evidence pertaining to the scientific issues has to be considered and nothing makes it ever ‘established’ except an ultimately subjective decision.

More- or less-standardized procedures for deriving national and international exposure guidelines for issues other than EMF have been developed in the past decades for environmental and occupational factors that are typically based on evidence from epidemiological studies, experimental investigations in animals and humans, in vitro studies and theoretical considerations about the mechanism of action.

Although weight and/or strength of evidence is thoroughly considered, a decisive element of these procedures is their precautionary approach. Because it is recognized that derivation of guidelines is conjectural and open to scientific controversy and discussion, the precautionary approach demands in case of uncertainty the evidence should be weighted to err in the direction that leads to the higher margin of safety. Examples of this procedure can be found in the Air Quality Guidelines for Europe by WHO.

Concerning EMFs, differences in exposure standards are mainly due to different answers to the following questions: What evidence should be used as the basis for the derivation? How should the broad spectrum of EMFs be subdivided? Which aspects of the multidimensional exposure situation must be considered? What are the relevant dosimetric quantities? Which safety factors should be introduced and what values should they take on?

In the face of such complexity, there is a great temptation to take the short cut for answering these questions. In fact, the procedure used by ICNIRP, IEEE, and other national and international standard-setting organizations reduces the problem to answering only the last of the questions stated above. These organizations maintain that the only evidence to start from are immediate short-term effects such as nerve excitations due to induced currents or temperature increase from absorption of...

Introduction and EHS-CARE

I somehow got on a list of activists for John Kerry and will add your comments to a packet I will present along with a letter to John Kerry's people soon.

Kerry is regrouping and campaigning hard regarding insurance coverage for children (very important and much-needed project) and needs to know, as do other politicians, that health and insurance problems in the U.S. will continue to spin out-of-control until someone takes responsibility for releasing the EMF Interagency Committee Report to Congress so that announcements and pamphlets emphasizing "prudent avoidance" can be distributed to clinics, hospitals and schools around-the-country. Acknowledgement of the importance of the 2002 EMF California Report should be added to the EMF RAPID findings when Congress evaluates findings re EMF and immune dysfunction, childhood Leukemia, and other health problems cited in the EMF RAPID Conclusions.

PREVENTION in regard to especially night-time EMF/EMR exposures is essential for everyone even tho you and I and others know that such exposures affect children more profoundly than adults. Even effects from poor sleep and resultant headaches and depression can and do place a huge burden on society!!!!

Filters have now been placed in many schools by Dr. Magda Havas/Dave Stetzer and as Dr. Havas reports, "the results are amazing" with improvements in attention, less need for asthma inhalers and even the principal of two schools reporting major improvement in her M.S. symptoms. See http://www.electricalpollution.com

I believe there are funds that were allocated for "informing the public" at the time EMF RAPID was initiated. Those funds should be transferred to the Environmental Protection Agency so information can be released to the public!!! A booklet on EMF's was printed by the Culver Company (the utilities' communications' experts) in 2001 that makes specific suggestions in regard to replacing electric clocks in bedrooms with battery-operated or wind-up clocks. Contact with Culver Company confirms that printing of the booklet was stopped. I received a copy of the booklet from Florida Power & Light a couple of years ago. A Culver Company representative happened to mention that the booklets were also being prepared for distribution to schools. WHY is this not happening???!!!

I have written to various public justice groups and have not even received a response. WHO is going to help the public decide how much of being guinea pigs they are willing to accept? HOW can industry officials, politicans, media officials sleep at night knowing there are children (not to mention the rest of society) suffering when oftentimes just moving electrical appliances/devices away from their beds might greatly improve or eliminate chronic asthma, chronic sinus infections, chronic headaches, ADD, ADHD and many other health problems that do not allow a child to study in school or to interact properly???!!!

One of the greatest mistakes that was made in regard to the $46 million "major rip-off" (EMF RAPID) is not considering the countless health problems that occur before a diagnosis of Leukemia!!!! We are allowing government officials to carry on not informing the public because they are getting away with the lame excuse that the percentages of children who develop Leukemia are small. They state the evidence for Leukemia in adults in the workplace is "weak." Well, there may be truth in those statements BUT the fact "there is evidence," and the fact "no one" can say what a safe level is, combined with the overwhelming costs for the many health problems that occur before Leukemia develops, makes it imperative that immediate action must be taken to inform the public.

Sorry, Deb, you know all of this and have been and still are a "great fighter for-the-cause!!!" Your comments (haven't had a chance to open all the others yet) "opened-a-door" in my mind that will be an important point (involvement of EPA) to John Kerry (and others) as I mentioned above.

In the meantime, I am working very hard on another project with a focus on children and hope to report "good news" soon!!!! Take care - Joanne

AIDS and the Man: Electromagnetism and the Immune System

http://tinyurl.com/69lqh

This is a "plenty-to-consider," excellent, long article I just happened to come across today, 4-5-05.

"NO DISEASE was identified in my two grandsons -- a reference only to "hypogammaglobuilinemia" which means "low immune." There are many "rare and unusual immune problems WITH NAMES......!!!!!

The webpage does not give any contact information or the name of the author, etc., but the "access info" indicates the writer is/was most likely Roger Coghill -- http://www.cogreslab.co.uk/aids.htm The article also does not contain a date.

There is a paragraph re "immune under corticol control" -- I made a note to review, so it may be "conjecture rather than fact" although I have very little doubt (our family facts plus guinea pig facts, etc. plus other journal articles, etc.) of the "corticol connection" to all of the health problems related to EMF/EMR and the chronic inflammation that results.

Interestingly, this article also mentions "......guinea pigs....normal blood after two months....." The reference has to do with removing the guinea pigs from EMR exposure/testing. [I wonder whether that statement refers to a UK study or the work referred to by Becker/Marino in their book, "The Body Electric," with a chapter titled "Blood". The statement is consistent with lab reports on my guinea pigs....boys were not tested for 5 mos. however, overall IgG's had gone up by 100 points and 204 points by that time after moving beds away from electric meters. Addl comment in brackets by jcm 4-5-05.]

Also, another paragraph in part, "......demagnitizing or degaussing the blood......the symptoms should disappear......." [Symptoms did begin to disappear in grandsons as well as guinea pigs after moving away from electric meter but questions remain as to whether "harm" is/was caused by multi-directional electromagnetic fields, electric fields or RF/high frequency radiation or a combination thereof ??? Addl comment by jcm 4-5-05.]

Another paragraph, ".....EMF acts as a promoter rather than a neoplastic event." [My research supports that radiation, whether ionizing or nonionizing, stresses the body (human or animal) which in turn leads to chronic inflammation that causes the proliferation of cells -- the beginning of the precancerous process. This is consistent with EMF's acting as a promoter. We were told by immunologist the boys may develop Leukemia/Lymphoma, etc., not that they had cancer "yet." Comment in brackets by jcm 4-5-05].

One theory mentioned is that ".....microwave radiation.....myeloid leukemia....effects on granulocytes........[other EMR exposure I don't recall at moment mentions something like "effects on lymphocytes leading to acute lymphocytic leukemia" (or words to that effect) -- comments in brackets are recall of review of the Coghill article by jcm 4-5-05].

I have not had time to review in detail or in entirety.

What we're not being told about the dangers of electro-magnetic radiation

(excerpt)

The latest issue of What Doctors Don't Tell You (April 2005, vol 16 no 1) has made a disturbing discovery that we thought you should know about immediately.

A US government agency with the grand title of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement has produced a report on the dangers of electro-magnetic fields (EMFs) and concluded that they posed ' . . a risk factor with significant societal consequences by reason of its pervasive nature and serious consequences for affected individuals.' The report also went on to recommend that the maximum permitted personal EMF exposure level be reduced by a factor of 500 - from 100 microteslas down to just 0.2.

It may not surprise you to learn that this report was never made public - and may well have remained that way if it were not for the latest exposé by What Doctors Don't Tell You which amasses all the latest scientific research on the hazards of EMF pollution - alerting you to the dangers so that you can take positive action to start eliminating them from your life.

It makes essential reading and if you want to get hold of the full report, then you'll be glad to hear that you can get this report plus other publications and services FREE when you subscribe. Click this link for more information http://www.wddty.co.uk/shop/details.asp?product=330

Officially, electrohypersensitivity (ES) is a problem that doesn't exist, but researchers from Sweden's prestigious Karolinska Institute estimate that as much as 3 per cent of the population suffer extreme adverse reactions to EMFs. Symptoms range from headaches and a flu-like feeling to chronic fatigue and depression, and yet mainstream medicine dismisses electro-sensitive people as hypochondriacs.

For decades it has been an open secret that workers exposed to continual electro-magnetic radiation - for example, electronics technicians, TV and radio assemblers, welders and train drivers - run a significantly higher risk of brain tumours and leukaemia - in some cases, as much as three times the risk.

But it's not just workers in the electronics and electrical industries who are at risk. Just six month ago, a team from Oxford University concluded that children living within 100 metres of overhead power lines had almost twice the risk of developing leukaemia.

So with this in mind, here's a quick intelligence test for all our readers:

Question: If EMF exposure at 0.2 microteslas roughly doubles childhood leukaemia cases and if 0.35 microteslas trebles this risk as research indicates, what level has the UK government adopted as an acceptable level for public exposure?

Answer: Congratulations to all those who guessed 100 microteslas. (It seems that the US government didn't want to tell the UK government either)

Incredibly, we are all being exposed to 500 times more than the safe limit of exposure, most of which happens in our own homes pumped out by everyday domestic electrical items, such as wireless broadband, computers, washing machines, TVs, bedside clocks and mobile phones.
