Helfen Sie den Robben!
Zwei Mausklicks genügen

Lieber Tierfreund,

Books NOT Bombs

Join us in an historic 24-hour emergency read-in! Libraries are the soul of our communities, providing vital services to all—especially the most low-income members and children. We NEED YOU to help save our libraries!

While Congress is about to allocate another $81 billion for war, vital services at home are being slashed—affordable housing, food stamps, public transportation, health care, and education—including libraries. According to the American Library Association, library funding cuts have topped $100 million in the last 18 months, and libraries in almost every state in the nation are facing cuts of up to 50 percent.

In Salinas, California--the hometown of the great John Steinbeck and heart of the farmworker community, the entire public library system is scheduled to close for lack of funds. This poor farmworker community has paid $80.5 million in taxes for the war in Iraq, but doesn’t have $5 million to keep its libraries open.
http://costofwar.com/

As part of CODEPINK ’s new Local Cost of War Campaign designed to save vital community services while highlighting the billions spent on war, we teamed up with the Salinas Action League, United Farmworkers and other community groups to organize an “Emergency 24-hour Read-In” at Salinas’ Cesar Chavez Library on April 2-3.
http://www.codepinkalert.org/National_Actions_Salinas.shtml

Please join us: bring your tent (if you have one), sleeping bag and favorite books. You’ll be in great company: among the readers will be actors Hector Elizondo and Mike Farrell; poets Gary Soto and Jose Montoya; community leaders Dolores Huerta and Salinas Mayor Anna Caballero; musician Dr. Loco; and writers Maxine Hong Kingston, Riane Eisler, James Houston, Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, Jack Kornfield, Meredith Maran, and Wes “Scoop” Nisker, and many more. Click here for more details.
http://www.codepinkalert.org/National_Actions_Salinas.shtml

If you are from Califonia, please join us in Salinas and take a moment to sign a petition to Governor Schwarzenegger asking him to solve the crisis in Salinas and our library system in general. If you are from outside the state, please pass this alert on to friends, families, listserves in California.
http://www.codepinkalert.org/National_Actions_petition.shtml

We urge you to learn about the budget cuts in your city and state, and to team up with community groups fighting to save critical social services. It’s a great way for CODEPINK to support community needs, educate new constituencies about the cost of the Iraq war and build broad coalitions that can effectively promote our values: Books Not Bombs, Healthcare not Warfare, Peace not Poverty, Funding for Wounded not for War.

With hope,

STOP PEPPER SPRAY TORTURE ON PEACEFUL PROTESTERS

STOP PEPPER SPRAY Q-TIP TORTURE ON PEACEFUL PROTESTERS!
CHECK OUT: http://WWW.NOPEPPERSPRAY.ORG

You're ALL invited to the Pepper Spray Trial!
Come witness the trial that will decide the fate of protest and chemical weapons in these times! We need a presence in the courtroom to show support!
Trial starts April 11th, 2005 onwards
San Francisco Federal Building, Judge Susan Ilston's Courtroom
450 Golden Gate Ave. at Polk (Civic Center BART stop)
**Must bring photo ID to get in**
Call 510-835-6303 for more info

We are the Pepper Spray 8, forest activists and plaintiffs in the pivotal civil rights case Headwaters Forest Defense vs. County of Humboldt, which interweaves the fate of our imperiled forests with the right to peacefully protest free from assault by pepper spray.

In 1997, while engaged in nonviolent sit-ins to protect old growth redwoods, Humboldt County and Eureka police applied pepper spray directly to our eyes with Q-tips. Shocking images from police videotapes caused international outrage. Amnesty International called the police behavior cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment..."tantamount to torture."

We've successfully fought numerous legal obstacles, winning appeals and making precedent, and going to trial twice, but the journey for justice is not quite over. We send this letter now at a critical juncture: We begin our new jury trial this April 11, 2005, and you're ALL invited!

There are two simple ways you can stand with us to protect the freedom of dissent in this country: 1. DONATE what you can to keep our case alive-every little bit helps, and donations will continue to be needed! 2. ATTEND TRIAL in San Francisco, CA starting April 11th. We need to publicly show our support and keep a presence in the courtroom for this important jury trial. For much more information, visit: http://www.nopepperspray.org

Last September, our case went to jury trial in San Francisco for the second time (represented by the same award-winning legal team that won a stunning jury verdict two years ago for Earth First! activists Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney against the FBI). After three weeks of trial testimony, the jury's deliberations came to a quick halt when just two of the jurors adamantly believed that police should be allowed to inflict severe pain on peaceful protesters. Although we had the majority, we need a unanimous verdict to protect the tradition of peaceful protest.

Let's make sure "the third time's the charm," because this case is more important than ever! We must not let the police open the door to using pain as coercion against nonviolent people, protecting the politically powerful Pacific Lumber/Maxxam Corporation in their devastation of ancient forests.

Civil rights in this country today are an endangered species just like the ancient redwoods we aim to protect. The fact that our case is a contentious one is the very reason we need to follow through with it and win the retrial, in defense of everyone's rights. Because as Frederick Douglas said, "Power concedes nothing without a demand."

LETTER OF SUPPORT FROM JUROR IN PEPPER SPRAY Q-TIP TRIAL

Dear Pepper Spray 8,

The trial ended today as a hung jury. We deadlocked (6 -2). I am greatly troubled and disappointed about the outcome...creat[ing] an underlying current that it's ok to use excessive force on peaceful protestors. I am appalled and dismayed that this happened. I do hope there is a third trial and the plaintiffs win.

Sincerely,
(One of the jurors)

Stay Out of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: The fight for ANWR continues

Tell the big oil companies to stay out of ANWR!

Today, my heart is heavy. By just two votes, we came up short in our effort to prevent oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, home to over 150 wildlife species. I offer my heartfelt thanks to the over 29,000 of you who joined with me and signed my petition to Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist, demonstrating our strong opposition to this disastrous policy.

In the end, over 90% of Senate Democrats voted to stop this madness -- we just didn't have the votes to overcome the Republican majority in the Senate.

But I want you to know that I won't give up in our fight to stop the drilling. And neither should you. I'm going to use every legislative tool at my disposal to reverse this vote and prevent this terrible policy from going into effect. But we can do more -- today.

I'm planning to organize a consumer boycott of any oil company that decides to drill in this pristine Alaskan wilderness area. If, through our pocketbooks, we can convince these companies to do the right thing, we can still save the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from the destruction that would be wrought by the oil drilling rigs.

Send an email to the CEOs of ExxonMobil, BP, ConocoPhillips, Royal Dutch/Shell, and ChevronTexaco now and tell them to stay out of ANWR!

And then invite everyone you know to join us.

This battle is not over -- not by a long shot.

In Friendship,

Barbara Boxer

Send a letter to the following decision maker(s):
Mr. David O'Reilly, ChevronTexaco CEO
Mr. James Mulva, ConocoPhillips CEO
Mr. Jeroen van der Veer, Shell CEO
Mr. John Browne, BP CEO
Mr. Lee Raymond, ExxonMobil CEO

Below is the sample letter:

Subject: Stay Out of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge!

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

As you know, current legislation making its way through Congress would open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling.

I am writing to urge your company to publicly pledge that you will not drill in ANWR.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is a God-given gift of pristine wilderness, first set aside by President Dwight Eisenhower more than 40 years ago, and we have a responsibility to preserve it. ANWR is home to more than 150 wildlife species, including caribou, polar bears, musk oxen, and millions of migratory birds.

The American people will not stand idly by and allow this wilderness area to be defiled.

If your company decides to drill in ANWR, we will launch a boycott of your products, and the products of your subsidiaries. And I know that millions of Americans will join us.

I urge you make a public pledge that you will not drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- or face a boycott of your products.

Thank you for your consideration of this critically important matter.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

Stop the Wolf Slaughter in Alaska

There is no shortage of bad news out there. Human misery seems to trump everything else. People seem to think that people are more important than wolves. But even if that's true, what do we do to ourselves when we turn our backs on the wolves? When we allow a massacre of such noble animals to go on?

Because once we know about it, if we do nothing, we are complicit. There's the rub. There is simply no way around that one. This wolf "hunt" in Alaska is gratuitous, violent, vicious, and deeply depraved. I am ashamed of my species when I see this. These magnificent animals are being hazed from the air by a...in airplanes. The wolves try to escape in deep snow, and run until they are exhausted. Then the cowards land the plane and shoot them. They have already killed 200+ wolves this winter. The so-called "Government" is allowing them to kill A THOUSAND WOLVES. And even more next year! What the h...???

Why?

Why indeed. Why are wolves still hunted so ruthlessly? Because these weenies are still at war with the wild, and there is nothing that represents wildness, independence, and family more than wolves. I normally ignore most email petitions, I admit it. But this time I have to do something. Everything I can do.

A plea from me to you: Remember wolves you've seen. If you're lucky, you've even seen some in the wild. Remember their amazing music and language. Feel their plight in your body. Please, don't just dismiss this news as more hellish information.

I hope you will take a few minutes, watch the video if you can, and either make a donation or write a letter, write your local paper, tell your friends, spread the word. Pass this on to your email lists. These animals are being killed right now. You Canadians on my list should not think that these unlucky wolves in Alaska are beyond the realm of your concern. THEY DON'T SEE BORDERS and WE ARE THEIR ONLY HUMAN VOICE.

you can watch video a short video with footage of the hazing of wolves in deep snow here:

and this press release has all the facts:
http://www.defenders.org/releases/pr2005/pr030405.html

THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR OUR SILENCE ON THIS ISSUE

Please send an email! (see links in message below, all it takes is one click to send a message to the appropriate folks)

Arrrroooooooo,
Amanda

Dear Friend,

By now, you've probably heard about the slaughter of wolves in Alaska through the horrific practice of aerial gunning. I wanted to give you an update on the situation, and let you know what our next steps are in stopping this barbaric practice.

Bad news first: Despite tens of thousands of phone calls, emails and letters, Governor Frank Murkowski refuses to stop the aerial gunning of wolves in Alaska. To make matters worse, his Board of Game has approved the number of wolves to be killed at over 1,000. This will be the greatest wolf massacre in half a century.

Here's what we're doing now: Defenders of Wildlife has newspaper ads ready to go in major newspapers across the country. Defenders is determined to use every means available stop this terrible practice where marksmen can gun down wolves from the air or chase them to exhaustion -then land and shoot them point blank. These ads will raise critical awareness throughout the country of the slaughter of wolves occurring in Alaska. But we need your help to run them. Our goal is to raise $50,000 over the next 72 hours so we can contact the newspapers and book ad placements immediately. Please consider an emergency tax-deductible contribution to help place these ads before more wolves are killed: http://www.care2.com/go/z/22287

Lawyers for Defenders of Wildlife have formally petitioned Interior Secretary Gale Norton to halt the killing as a violation of the Federal Airborne Hunting Act. To build grassroots pressure on her to act, we want to generate citizen petitions to her - especially through the placement of these newspaper ads.

Please send your emergency tax-deductible contribution today - your generous donation will help focus the eyes ofthe nation on this horrific killing of wolves in Alaska.

Thank you!

United States Senate chose to ignore common sense

March 17, 2005

Yesterday, a narrow majority of the United States Senate chose to ignore common sense, sound economics, and the protection of our natural heritage by voting in favor of drilling in America 's pristine Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The halls of the Capitol were clogged with oil industry lobbyists as the Senators rejected an amendment by Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington State to protect this great wilderness.

But the oil industry hasn't won yet. This is just the first step and we can still stop this outrage. Click here to write to your Senators and tell them how you feel about their vote. Let them hear from you before the Senate votes again.
http://capwiz.com/lcv/issues/alert/?alertid=7233336&type=CO

Although this vote is a setback, this battle is far from over. The vote was 51-49, so we can turn this around. The most important thing you can do today is let your Senators know you are watching their every move on this and other important environmental issues.

Take Action Now: Write to your Senators and tell them how you feel about their vote.

Your voice is needed to support those who support a clean, healthy environment, and to hold anti-environment Senators accountable.

http://www.regenwald.org

URGENT: Alaska National Wildlife Refuge destruction vote tomorrow

Earlier today on the Ed Schultz show Senator Harry Reid appealed for the American people to "RISE UP" against the invasion of the the ANWR (Alaska National Wildlife Refuge) for an iffy 6 month's drop in the oil bucket. The Republican's are going to try to sneak this through TOMORROW using a budget trick tomorrow. We need you to SPEAK OUT NOW, especially if you are in Hawaii, both senators Akaka and Inouye, and also Landrieu from Louisiana

http://www.usalone.com/anwr.htm

This is an urgent action request. The above webpage instantly sends your personal message directly to all your members of Congress with one click. Senator Reid says they just need ONE more vote against to stop this thing. Please take action now to help win the last vote to make this a reality.

Stop Canada’s cruel and senseless baby seal hunt

Stop Canada’s cruel and senseless baby seal hunt

This email contains graphic written descriptions of Canada’s seal hunt.

“A sealer near us quickly clubbed every seal within a small radius, to immobilize each of the pups, and then dragged the bodies to the center of his circle. One by one he flipped a seal on its back and skinned it. If the seal flipped around or fought against the skinning he’d flip it back to its stomach, club it several more times and then finish the skinning.”
—IFAW Seal Hunt Monitor

Please save a seal today
http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?ID=M67661941749144712685965

Right now on the sparkling ice floes of Eastern Canada, hundreds of thousands of baby seals are about to die.

In just a few short days, seals as young as 12 days of age will be clubbed and beaten over the head. Others will be shot with a rifle in open water, fighting for their lives ... many left to die under the ice or pulled onto boats with sharp metal hooks.

95% of the seals killed will be less than three months old. But there’s still time to help.
http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?ID=M67661951749144712685965

If you were to witness this personally, your heart would break

Some baby seals will be skinned alive. Their front flippers flailing violently, trying to squirm away as the knife finds them, blindly pawing and wrenching until they finally fall still.

Seal hunting isn’t much of a challenge. Most seal pups lay on the ice alone and helpless before they are violently cut down. The sealers pour over the ice in their army of boats, snowmobiles and even a helicopter, leaving trails of blood in their wake. The baby seals lift their heads and try to cry out in anguish, but manage only a pathetic snarl before the club crushes their skull.

After the seals are skinned, the carcasses are abandoned on the ice once the pelt and blubber are removed, left in piles like disposable laundry. The meat is never used.

This senseless act of annual cruelty is actually supported by the Canadian government

As many seals are killed today as during the 1950s and 60s when overhunting significantly pushed seals down the road towards extinction. You helped raise a global outcry that stopped the killing of whitecoat baby seals in the 1980s. But Canada’s politicians have since used hidden subsidies to expand the hunt again in order to win favor with the fishing industry.

Your contribution puts IFAW seal rescue teams on the ice to expose this outrage

The Canadian government wants the media and the public to believe that no one cares about the innocent blood spilled each year across the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The sealing industry counts on the fact that most people still don’t know it’s happening.

You can prove them wrong
http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?ID=M67661961749144712685965

This year’s hunt will continue until the industry reaches its quota of 319,500 seals. IFAW will be there, documenting the cruelty and abuses of the seal hunt to journalists and politicians.

But we need your help to tell the rest of the world what’s really going on. Your generous contribution will help stop cruelty to innocent animals such as the baby harp seal all over the world.

$25: Pays for a seal hunt observation permit to document ongoing cruelty and abuse
$100: Pays for one day of videotaping the seal hunt to expose its cruelty to the world
$50: Funds campaigns to prosecute anyone caught abusing seals
$500: Pays for one hour of flight time to bring a seal surveillance team to the ice

The seal hunt will be underway in just a few weeks. Please contribute now to help spare another single baby seal from a cruel and senseless death.

Thanks for all you do,

Fred O’Regan
President and CEO

P.S. Our humanity is measured by how we care for the vulnerable among us. What is more vulnerable than a newborn seal pup clubbed to death, stranded helpless and alone on the ice? The killing of baby seals doesn’t make sense economically or ecologically. Please give what you can now before this year’s hunt begins.
