A new member/director on the WHO board has been appointed. He is the director from the Danish Health Council J.Kr. Goetrik and one of the strongest supporters from the mobile phone industry. In spite of all scientific evidence he went on claiming that there is no evidence that mobilphones and especially mobile phone masts are dangerous for human health. Only after strong political pressure from the public opinion and his employer the minister of health, he had to admit that maybe children should resctrict their use of mobile phones, though there was still no proof that it was dangerous for children. Each time I told the truth about health effects of mobile phones to the press, TV or in public, the day after my employers: the dean of the medical faculty and the rector from the university received a letter from him, in which he demanded that I should deny what I said to the press and that they should stop me from talking to the public. He was also the former director for the Danish Cancer association and so Christoffer Johansens chief and continuing protector. So his appointment will definitely strengthen the mobile phone industry's viewpoints in WHO.

On September 22nd, 2005, Senator Mark Dayton (D-MN) introduced the Department of Peace legislation into the U.S. Senate (S. 1756), calling for an elevation of the Reagan-established "Institute of Peace" to a Cabinet-level position.

This is a huge moment for our campaign, and for the future of the Department of Peace! Senator Dayton's leadership and enthusiastic support will take us to the next level in our work as we continue to advocate for this historic legislation.

Cars clogged Texas highways with more than a million people fleeing Hurricane Rita as the storm roared through the Gulf of Mexico on a potentially catastrophic course.

I just spoke to my daughter in the Toronto area. She told me that lineups for the gas pumps are horrendous as everyone tries to fill their tanks before the expected jump in price which is expected to hit $2.50 a litre by tonight. With prices holding steady at around $2 a litre lately, this will be a big jump.

The trucks are still rolling. You wouldn't believe how many mushrooms the big stores go through. We are bringing in 2 full reefer loads a day to supply Albertsons, Safeway, Fred Meyers, Organically Grown, Pacific Coast, Charlies and a few others in Portland alone.

Nice to hear from you. I just feel we should always be trying to push the boundaries, no matter how high the wall! The Berlin Wall came down eventually. My gut feeling is we should really push this electrosensitivity (EHF) stuff before the HPA report in October waters it all down to mean nothing. I am currently tackling the appeal for Leicester's Elizabeth House Tower block. You know the 14+ antennas with big cabinets on a 15 floor block. The main and only campaigner, Phil Hendy is really ill now - no surprise, he's on the 15th and top floor, underneath a massive cabinet. Most of the 150 residents of the block are suffering to varying degrees - the least of them apathy, depression, headaches etc. Phil is trying desperately to deliver and collect the letter I wrote for the appeal in the tower block but some days he cannnot get out of bed. If any of you want to support these people from any other areas here or abroad, please email me for a copy of the appeal letter SandraLwr@aol.com . They desperately need your help because they could end up with another 6 antennas on the roof and a cabinet or two. I think they have suffered enough and we should make a stand on this one, don't you? Yes, I know the Inspectorate may ignore letters from out of area but if we can manage to get quite a few going, then they will notice the support, won't they?

I totally back all the objections raised against the appeal by 02 UK on the Elizabeth House, Leicester, planning application, and agree that nothing should be withdrawn from the planning application paperwork.

Although I represent Mast Sanity as Director of Advisory Services, this is my personal objection letter. The views I express are entirely my own, although some may also be the views of Mast Sanity.

Elizabeth House residents have been campaigning against the existing masts for several years. Not because they did not like the look of them, but because some residents felt unwell and noticed changes in the quality of their lives and health.

I had no worries about phone masts until a TETRA mast was erected on a building in Bognor Regis and I began to experience bad headaches and nosebleeds when I shopped there. Since that time I have become more and more sensitive and suffer other symptoms associated with mast sickness, which are well documented in research carried out since the 70's, some of which has been peer reviewed.

I am absolutely certain that the TETRA masts cause some people to become unwell, and that their health deteriorates, because this Bognor TETRA mast was removed after 5 months at the landowner's request, and all of the people around the mast site who had also been unwell gradually recovered after two or three weeks. Also the smaller species of birds which had suddenly left the area after the mast was turned on, gradually came back.

Also, unbeknown to anyone, TETRA was added to a previously unused BT mast in the Bognor Regis parish of Felpham shortly after, and without planning permission i.e. unlawfully. People became unwell there and appeared to have classic mast symptoms, yet none of the hard core campaigners in the area believed that there was TETRA there. They were later proved wrong. This unlawful mast is still there today with no retrospective planning permission

So, this area may be unique in that we have had proof of the health effects microwave radiation can cause in two very different ways and via the worst example of this technology, the very dangerous 02 Airwave TETRA. There is at least one TETRA mast near Elizabeth House, Leicester.

I have answered the Mast Sanity Advice Line since October 04 and have a very good idea of the extent of the so called "anecdotal evidence" of ill health across the UK. I find it hard to understand how government bodies and health officials can ignore all of this, and add further injustice to sick people by labelling this ill health as 'psychosomatic' or 'non-existent.' You have to wonder if there is any human decency in any of them and if they are any better than terrorists.

Basically, people in the UK who genuinely have classic mast symptoms (which are now being treated in Germany by German doctors), are either misdiagnosed or discredited. Some are referred to psychiatrists and further discredited. Mr D P Hendy of Elizabeth House has been put through this process, yet NHS specialists are encountering problems in treating his illnesses in the conventional way.

I know of many more people, some of whom have been asked to leave a doctor's surgery, just because they are certain that these newer mast technologies are badly affecting their health and well-being. Others have to move to another area, only to be faced with another mast planning application after they have moved.

Interestingly, all of these people who go away for a few weeks to places with less emissions begin to recover, except for those who have become severely ill, but even they find some relief.

How much more proof is needed? When will government bodies and mobile phone companies stop this practice of denial for material considerations? When too many die?

What about our children and their future? If adults are affected by this technology, the long term results for children could be even worse. Yet masts are put up in residential areas, near or on schools, hospitals etc, and very close to residential property. When will this insanity be stopped? When it is too late?

I urge the Inspector to speak to these people in Elizabeth House. It may not be the usual practice, but it needs to be done if there is to be any justice and consideration of human rights ever again in this supposedly democratic country. We should not be adding masts to the roof of Elizabeth House, we should be removing the existing masts.

I urge the Inspector to declare that "special circumstances" exist for Elizabeth House in line with the Harrogate Judgement. I ask him to be merciful to fellow human beings in great distress. Enough is enough.

I had a phone box call from Phil Hendy, the main campaigner of Elizabeth House, yesterday. He says he is managing to distribute and collect letters because he is sitting in the foyer and catching those who go in and out. I wondered if he would have the energy to cover the 10 flats on 15 floors himself, but obviously he has worked out a solution. When I told him that other areas of Leicester, and the UK, were sending in letters to back Elizabeth House, he was absolutely delighted and asked me to thank you all and tell you how much he appreciates it. He will inform the other residents as and when he can. He told me there are other flats in the same state in Leicester. He also said that there are THREE TETRA masts near Elizabeth House, one on the roof of the building opposite, on London Road, another on the roof on a buiding alongside Elizabeth House, and the third in a street nearby off of London Road. Your efforts gave Phil a lift he badly needed. I really don't know how he keeps going. He is quite amazing.

Thanks for your email and news update on Phil, what a brave man he is and all honours to him, I wish him much luck and success on with his campaign.

I had a thought that came to me with regards to my forthcoming photographic Exhibition in march 2006 at the Islington Town Hall Museum, for which I am exhibiting various photo's of in and around the Borough, Called Islington Uncut, whereby I am expressing various subject matters.

I am aware of a tower block at Finsbury Park in Islington that has so many phone masts on it its quite scary considering it is a residents council block, so I have decided to photograph this block and highlight the plight of phone mast sanity with this photograph, the good news is that members of the council shall be visiting my exhibition as well as the general public, so it will be a good opportunity to bring attention to this important issue. I may be asked to remove it, but I doubt it and I may never get an exhibition there again, as this is my second, however I feel quite strongly about this issue.

I shall keep you informed.......

CAMPAIGNERS are celebrating after council bosses refused a new mobile phone mast for Muswell Hill.

Telecom giant Vodafone submitted plans for the site at the junction of Albert Road and Durnsford Road.

Alexandra ward councillor Wayne Hoban said: "I am pleased the council has accepted concerns and rejected this application. This is very good news for all of us concerned about the proliferation of phone masts without proper planning powers for local councils."

The proposed mast was near to Rhodes Avenue primary school, Alexandra Park secondary in Bidwell Gardens and the Albert Road recreation ground.

CAMPAIGNERS in a picturesque Yorkshire village were celebrating today after a controversial mobile phone mast plan was thrown out by council chiefs.

Residents in Great Preston, near Kippax in Leeds, have been battling a bid by communications giant T-Mobile to put up a 25-metre-high mast in local woodland.

Now they have got the news they were hoping for - Leeds City Council has turned down the company's request for planning permission for the development.

Richard Travers, who spearheaded opposition to the proposal, said today: "We're absolutely delighted – this is a real victory for people power."

Dad-of-two Mr Travers, 44, also pledged to fight any attempt by T-Mobile to appeal against the council's decision. He said: "We're ready and waiting – we'll be keeping a very close eye on this in the future."

The mast row first made headlines last month when the Yorkshire Evening Post revealed the site off Whitehouse Lane earmarked by T-Mobile is owned by the family of Great and Little Preston Parish Council chairman Charles Hirst.

Villagers immediately demanded to know why they had not been informed about the scheme until late July, although it was in the pipeline as long ago as March.

Many parents also expressed concern at the possible impact of a mobile phone mast on their children's health, even though scientific opinion is divided over the risk the structures pose.

Mr Hirst said he had been "taken aback" by the negative reaction to the plan, and explained he had kept quiet about it so he could not be accused of trying to influence his parish colleagues.

In a document giving its reasons for rejecting the application, the city council says the mast would be "an intrusive alien element representing significant visual harm to its mature and attractive landscape setting".

A spokeswoman for T-Mobile would not be drawn on the case, other than to say the situation was currently "under review".

A key motivation for the Iraq War must certainly be the desire of American policy planners to secure petroleum reserves with which to fuel the American military in the 21st Century. American armed forces are all about mobility and global reach, and they require a tremendous quantity of fuel for all that high-speed, long-distant and low miles-per-gallon mobility. Without liquid hydrocarbon fuels, there is no "superpower" military, and without that there is no American empire. Petroleum is the lifeblood of the American war machine. The American consumer, as well, has an unquenchable thirst for petroleum, using it in large inefficient automobiles, luxury trucks, and recreational vehicles of many kinds. Reducing America's desire for oil would help rein in American imperialism and aggression. Any such reduction is unlikely to occur in the military, by the very nature of its purpose. So, Americans opposed to the Iraq War and American imperialism favor a significant reduction in the civilian consumption of petroleum, most particularly as gasoline fueling transportation....

I sent some evidence re. effects and symptoms to Kenneth Lane, and this was his sarcastic(?) response. I included :_

1) The symptoms suffered by residents eg chronic insomnia and headaches; nausea and vertigo; earache, hearing loss and tinnitus; nose bleeds; ulcerated mouths and throats; severe rashes; raised white blood cell count; strokes etc. etc.

2) I also included the spiralling of red bloodcells after using mobile phones and:-

Dear Rt. Hon. Patricia Hewitt,

I have seen the letter to Mr. Brian Farrelly (Clerk to our Parish Council) with regard to the Orange mast, which has caused damage to health in Kensworth for the last four years, from your Customer Service Centre and dated 22nd August 2005, for which I thank Victoria Lindsay. I note one or two points in this letter which need clarification.

Page 1.

1) If the Dept. of Health is unable to intervene on behalf of the Electorate when their health is being destroyed, what is the purpose of it and why is the Government spending money on it?

2) There is no consultation regarding the positioning of masts, which are mostly arbitrarily placed wherever ‘phone companies want them. South Beds District Council refusal of planning permission for the Orange mast to be placed in Kensworth was overruled by Planning in Bristol and against the wishes of residents who have suffered symptoms ever since the mast was placed in Sept 2001 – 4 years ago and they are still suffering.

(Russian scientists tell us that after three years exposure, effects from EMR become permanent. Certainly symptoms are worsening and apparently spreading in Kensworth, as serious symptoms are now found 100 metres from the mast, namely raised white blood cell count in two ladies living opposite each other for which their doctors can find no cause.)

The needs of the Electorate are constantly dismissed as ‘concerns’ whilst no effort is made to either verify effects or to prove their symptoms have nothing to do with emissions. Until we found the reason for the symptoms suffered in Kensworth and the historical, incontrovertible proof of effects, we had concerns; now people know that the mast is the source of their symptoms and ask, please, for the level of emissions to be considerably lowered.

Why are no scientific tests being carried out in situ where the effects are felt? Are the authorities afraid to discover the truth?

Professor Norbert Leitgeb, consultant member of the ICNIRP is carrying out such tests in Austria and has found a link between EMR frequency emissions and symptoms, he does not yet consider this to be proof. How much proof do we need when we have the following? :-

a) Russian evidence from 1930s of symptoms in relation to EMR emissions amongst workers in the industry.

b) The death of the American ambassador in Moscow, Walter J.Stoessel from a leukaemia-like disease; many embassy staff with 40% raised white blood cell count, their children with blood anomalies and all with other symptoms when the ambassador’s office was bombarded with 1 to 4 milliwatts of EMR (much lower than the then American ‘safe’ level of 10 milliwatts) throughout the 60s and 70s.

(When American doctors took buccal smears from embassy staff they were not told that evidence of cellular damage was being sought. Certainly there have been recent findings of damage to chromosomes, DNA and human sperm and recent tests have shown that red blood cells spiral during and after the use of mobile phones. Raised blood pressure, strokes, nosebleeds and heart attacks have been suffered near the mast in Kensworth).

c) Scientific tests in Schwarzenburg in the 1990s proved the reduction of melatonin in animals and humans in the presence of EMR emissions. (See Dr. Neil Cherry’s document on the subject). Dr. Cherry blamed his early death upon his constant proximity to masts and emissions during his investigations. I dare not spend any more time near the mast in Kensworth, because I feel so ill in the houses of residents there.

d) The Freiburger appeal from German doctors noting the preponderance of symptoms near masts etc. etc.

e) The same symptoms are found wherever pulsed EMR frequency emissions are present

f) More recently, there has been found a connection between interference with calcium in the human body.

Why are all these findings being ignored?

g) I have heard a little about the ‘investigation’ going on in Essex, where people are exposed to mobile handset use for a few minutes. This is ludicrous (‘though even this brief exposure affected someone I know of who endured the test, risking even more damage to his health in the hope of giving the necessary proof of effects!) as when I acquired my first mobile phone in the 80s I talked for hours to my friends in the evenings during the free time allowed and began to get pain in my ears and the side of my head and I know many people still talk for hours on their mobiles. My phone is off all the time now except for emergencies e.g. when miles from home I locked the car keys in the boot and was able to get help using the phone. I am not against this technology – I like it! BUT - it must be safe for all of us to use and it is NOT!

2) Quote: ‘The Balance of evidence to date (from the NRPB and the ICNIRP) suggests that exposures to MRF radiation below NTPB/ICNIRP guidelines do not cause adverse health effects to the general population.’

Which evidence? Effects in homes have not been investigated - that would be evidence, especially as the fact that symptoms are the same wherever emissions have effects proves a link.

When are the NRPB (now the Radiological Protection Division!) going to carry out investigations in the homes of any of the people who are suffering severe insomnia; headaches, nausea and vertigo; earache, tinnitus and hearing loss, nose bleeds, rashes, lowered immunity, cancer, strokes or heart attacks where masts have been activated? If the Swiss could do it in the 1990s I’m sure we have the technology to do it now!

As Secretary of State for Health, surely your request for such investigations would be listened to. I request urgent action to be taken to help all the people who are suffering and to prevent more suffering, misery and deaths from cancer around masts.

1. Evidence of Effects upon Health of Low Frequency Electromagnetic Radio-waves.

Please compare symptoms herein with those noted near Orange mast in Kensworth. Project Pandora Historically the Soviet Union has invested huge sums of money and time investigating microwaves and their effects. In 1952, while the Cold War was showing no signs of thawing, there was a secret meeting at the Sandia Corporation in New Mexico between U.S. and Soviet scientists involving the exchange of information regarding the biological hazards and safety levels of EMR. The Soviets possessed the greater preponderance of information, and the American scientists were too pigheaded to take it seriously. In subsequent meetings, the Soviet scientists continued to stress the seriousness of the risks, while American scientists downplayed their importance and so humiliated them. Shortly after the last Sandia meeting, the Soviets began covertly directing RADAR like microwave beams at the U.S. embassy in Moscow, not only gathering intelligence but using embassy workers as guinea pigs for low-level EMR experiments and a means to prove their claims. Washington, D.C. was initially oddly quiescent, regarding the Moscow embassy bombardment. The U.S. government woke up to the reality of psychotronics when from 1960 to 1965, the directe electromag- netic and microwave emissions at the U.S embassy caused a wide range of physical and mental illness among many U.S. personnel serving there. Casualties include the eventual death of the U.S. Ambassador, Walter J. Stoessel himself.

Dr Stephen Possony a one time Science Advisor to the Department of Defense, now retired, said: "After the death of our ambassador in Moscow, due to contracting leukemia, and a couple of other employees, it suddenly dawned on us to have a real careful look at what was happening there." Discovered in 1962, these complex set of electromagnetic signals were investigated by the CIA, which hired a consultant, Milton Zaret, and code named the research "Project Pandora". According to Zaret, the Moscow signal was composed of several frequencies, and was focused each day precisely upon the Ambassador's office, U.S. Embassy in Moscow. The intensity of the bombardment was not made public, but when the State Department finally admitted the existence of the signal, it announced that it was fairly low . **

**(In a book by Paul Brodeur, ‘The Zapping of America, the signal was 1 to 4 milliwatts - far below the ‘safe’ 10 milliwatt level then current in America!)

These signals were measured in the short "S" and long "L" spectrum had extremely complex modulations with a pattern of variations, some of which were quite random. A Top Secret Eyes Only memorandum, dated 20 December 1966 from ARPA shows the significance of this project. This memorandum summarizes the initial results obtained from this program. The White House has directed, through USIB [U.S. Intelligence Board] that int- ensive investigative research be conducted within the State Department, CIA and DoD to attempt to determine what the threat is. This national program has been coordinat- ed by the State Department and was code named TUMS. ARPA is represented and is conducting research on a selective portion of the overall program concerned with one of the potential threats, that of the effects of low level electromagnetic radiation on man.

Project PANDORA was to include a number of parallel projects, such as Projects TUMS, MUTS, and BAZAR, involving the CIA, Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA), the State Department, the Navy and the Army. They were tasked to study the effects of the emitted Soviet microwaves on animals and humans. In April 1976 the Secretary of State Henry Kissinger sent the following telegram to the U.S. Embassy in Moscow which summarized the conclusions of the study of the Moscow signal. Subject: Radiation and UHF and Electromagnetic Dangers Beginning in 1960 the Soviet Union directed the high frequency beams of radiation at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow which were calculated up intelligence but cause physiological effects on personnel. The effects the Soviets calculated to achieve in the personnel serving (at least as early as 1960) included

A) Malaise (B) Irritability, (C) Extreme fatigue. At this time the Soviets believed that the induced effects were temporary. Subsequently, it has been verified that the effects are not temporary. Definitely tied to such radiation and the UHF/VHF electromagnetic waves are: (A) Cataracts, (B) Blood changes that induce heart attacks, (C) Malignancies, (D) Circulatory problems, and (E) Permanent deterioration of the nervous syste

B) In most cases the after-effects do not become evident until long after exposure - a decade or more.There was concensus among Soviet EMR researchers that a beam such as the Moscow signal was destined to produce blurred vision and loss of mental concentration.

C) The Boston Globe reported that the American ambassador had not only developed a leukemia like blood disease, but also suffered from bleeding eyes and chronic headaches. Under the CIA's Project Pandora, monkeys were brought into the embassy and exposed to the Moscow signal; they were found to have developed blood composition anomalies and unusual chromosome counts.

D) Embassy personnel were found to have a 40 percent higher than average white blood cell count. While Operation Pandora's data gathering proceeded, embassy personnel continued working in the facility and were not informed of the bombardment until 10 years later. Embassy employees were eventually granted a 20 percent hardship allowance for their service in an unhealthful post. Throughout the period of bombardment, the CIA used the opportunity to gather data on psychological and biological effects of the beams on our American personnel.

The U.S. government has carefully studied the electromagnetic signatures and examined health affects of the Moscow signal radiation. The job was turned over to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). DARPA is now developing and testing new electromagnetic antipersonnel weaponry.

British policemen are now suffering from insomnia, headaches, nausea, vertigo and hearing loss whilst using handsets with the new Tetra masts. As have villagers in Kensworth (as well as painful, bloodshot eyes; nose-bleeds; strokes etc.) ever since the Orange mast was activated. LIST OF SYMPTOMS EXPERIENCED IN KENSWORTH - STILL ONGOING AFTER TWO AND A HALF YEARS! (September 14th. 2005 NOW FOUR YEARS) INSOMNIA-NIGHT AFTER NIGHT - only relieved by going away on holiday OR TO STAY WITH RELATIVES. EXHAUSTION (of course). CONTINUAL DAILY HEADACHES. SORE, BLOODSHOT EYES. VERTIGO AND NAUSEA. EARACHE AND TINNITUS. (These 6 symptoms are the most common symptoms, and are suffered by all the people closest to the mast)

EXTREME THIRST WITH ULCERATED MOUTHS AND THROATS; RAISED BLOOD PRESSURE, STROKES and heart attack (1 man had two strokes -1 when the mast was first activated in autumn 2002 and a worse one when it was re-activated after being off for the whole of April 2002, he is now disabled).

NOSEBLEEDS - most recently a man visiting his parents (IN KENSWORTH) woke with his pillow soaked in blood on Christmas day. When the same thing happened on Boxing day he took his family away vowing never to return until the mast was taken away. A 16 year old boy 100m from the mast is suffering frequent, heavy nosebleeds which continued even after his nose was cauterised.

RASHES. A 15 year old girl (+ insomnia, headaches and depression) whose symptoms continue whatever treatment she has from the doctor/hospital (her dog keeps developing small tumours on its paws which have to be removed by the vet - otherwise the dog constantly chews its paws.

On Sunday June 27th, I learnt that 2 ladies having been ill and doctors unable to find the cause have finally both been diagnosed with a raised white bloodcell count - see 'PANDORA'. One of these ladies became a widow last week, when her 51 yr old husband had a massive heart attack and died suddenly. The other also has insomnia, headaches and feels tired and ill all the time.

In your document re: Pubic health you say that changes in brain activity, reaction times and insomnia are 'small effects!!! Not near the Orange mast in Kensworth, or, I expect in all the other groups of people suffering in the same way all over the UK and all over the World!

I asked you before, and I ask you again, " Have you been into the houses of those who are enduring this torture?" I have! My partner has begged me not to do so again, but unless I find out who and how many are suffering what, I shall be unable to speak for them as they have requested. I have felt the symptoms briefly in varying degrees depending upon the relationship of each house to the mast. One feels a downward dragging internal sensation, starting in the head with giddiness and passing down through the torso into the gut (leaving a feeling of nausea and weakness) into the legs. At the worst one's shoulders droop and there is an irresistible urge to lie down and rest, in these houses I cannot bear to stay longer than 15 to 20 minutes. I experienced exactly the same sensation when in my car on top of the Arndale shopping centre car-park in Luton waiting to get out. I looked up and saw there were 4 or 5 masts above my head.

Other questions I asked were:-

"Why are people suffering all this pain not tested and treated for effects as are the workmen in association with RF occupations?" and 'Why set up laboratory tests when the damage is being suffered in their own homes?

Will you please listen to people who say they are ill since masts have been erected near their homes and monitor these effects? Is it not your function to protect us all from harm to our health?

I have more evidence, but it would fill a book.

AN APPLICATION for a phone mast just two metres away from children's bedrooms has been withdrawn.

The dramatic U-turn decision by Orange concerning the site at Olympic House in Tattenhall was announced after a meeting held last Monday between the company and residents.

The Chronicle reported on September 9 that the mobile phone company proposed to erect a mast at the site next to The Mount, two metres from bedrooms occupied by Kath Jameson's sons. After hearing the decision, Kath said: 'We are all delighted. It was definitely worth the rallying around.

'The company have been reasonable and realised there was just too much opposition to this site. I don't think they realised there are people living near it, they thought it was all offices. 'I'd like to thank The Chronicle for highlighting the problem, as it raised awareness. Most people had no idea about the proposal before the article.'

The proposed mast caused concern among many local residents due to the proximity to housing and the lack of consultation within the village.

However, this now appears to have been redressed. Jonathan Kersh, chairman of Tattenhall Parish Council, received confirmation of the withdrawal after the meeting. He said: 'The company will be consulting with the village on other locations for the mast. It is great news.'

An Orange spokesman said yesterday: 'After the meeting, we took the decision to withdraw the application for now but are still looking for a site.'

Das Handy ist nach Ansicht der österreichischen Eltern die Schuldenfalle Nummer eins. Fast zwei Drittel machen sich zudem Sorgen um die Gesundheit der Familie. Das geht aus einer Umfrage des Linzer Meinungsforschungsinstituts "market" hervor, deren Ergebnisse am Freitag veröffentlicht wurden.

"market" führte im September telefonische Interviews mit 502 repräsentativ für die österreichischen Eltern ausgewählten Personen durch. Dabei stellte sich heraus, dass 73 Prozent im Handy bzw. dem Telefonieren eine "besonders große" oder "große Gefahr" für eine Überschuldung sehen. Auf den Plätzen folgten Auto bzw. Kfz, der Computer samt dazugehörigen Spielen, das Internet sowie Ausgehen und Disco.

64 Prozent der Eltern sorgen sich "sicher sehr" bzw. "eher" darum, wie gesundheitsschädlich Handystrahlung wirklich ist. 61 Prozent gaben an, dass sie sich verunsichert fühlen, wenn die Kinder unerwartet nicht über das Mobiltelefon erreichbar sind. 48 Prozent erklärten hingegen, dass man durch die Handys immer weiß, wo sich der Nachwuchs aufhält. 35 Prozent glauben an die Wirksamkeit eines Telefonverbots als Sanktion.

58 Prozent der Eltern sind der Ansicht, dass sich das Kommunikationsverhalten der Kinder in den vergangenen zehn Jahren etwas bzw. sehr verschlechtert hat. Nur vier Prozent sehen eine starke, 16 Prozent eine leichte Verbesserung.

Als zweckmäßigste Maßnahme zur Eindämmung des Handygebrauchs wird das Wertkartentelefon mit eingeschränktem Guthaben angesehen (93 Prozent). 88 Prozent sehen als sehr zweckmäßig bzw. zweckmäßig an, den Kindern die Nachteile des Mobiltelefons zu erklären. 85 Prozent glauben, dass man selbst wenig mit dem Handy telefonieren sollte, um mit gutem Beispiel voranzugehen. Immerhin 44 Prozent der Befragten könnten sich für Kinder unter zwölf Jahren ein Verbot der Nutzung von Mobiltelefonen vorstellen.

One of his key proposals is a modern homesteading law, in which the federal government will give state-owned land to anyone from the region who promises to build on it. The end price could well be several hundred billion dollars. An estimated 12,000 weather-related disasters since 1980 have caused 618,200 fatalities and resulted in economic losses of $1.3 trillion. In the 1980s, the average annual economic loss from weather-related disasters was $26 billion. In 2004, that number rose to $104 billion, and in 2005, Hurricane Katrina alone is expected to cost $100-200 billion in economic losses.

The catastrophe we are watching unfold along the U.S. Gulf Coast is a wake-up call for decision makers around the globe. If the world continues on its current course—massively destroying coastal wetlands and increasing fossil fuel consumption—future generations may face a chain of disasters that make Katrina-scale catastrophes a common feature of life in the 21st century.

At a time when politicians and the media have focused on immediate symptoms rather than long-term problems, Worldwatch plays a more important role than ever.

For example, well-financed opponents of action on climate change have delayed implementation of carbon dioxide emissions limits for over a decade, allowing global emissions to grow by 20 percent since 1990. In early October, for the first time in 20 years, the World Health Organization (WHO) will assemble a panel to recommend a new set of exposure guidelines for power-frequency EMFs.

Few people have beard about the meeting. Yet, the electric utility industry will be there in force, sitting in on, and no doubt participating in, the weeklong deliberations.

Five years ago, the Committee of Experts on Tobacco Industry Documents issued a 260-page report documenting the tobacco industry¹s strategies to undermine the work of the WHO. (The full report is available at:

In the aftermath of natural disaster Americans are urged give generously to help victims of tragedy. These monies are above and beyond the taxes paid by our citizens that the Bush administration refers to as federal aid. We've been assured that the federal protection umbrella, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are mobilized and ready to move into any disaster area within hours. Following the debacle of mismanagement and systems failure just witnessed in Louisiana and New Orleans, it is time to look beyond opening our checkbooks to consider what we are paying for, both through charitable organizations and the federal government in taxes.

Hurricane Katrina and the devastation of New Orleans is a tragedy of colossal proportions for all Americans. Words are insufficient to portray what went wrong, but clearly this is the time to evaluate, to scrutinize, to peek under the cover of the structure of FEMA that after the 9/11 disaster was rolled into a newly created Hydra-headed bureaucracy, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). We may never get another chance and the demand must come from the people because on September 14, exactly 20 days after Governor Blanco declared a State of Emergency in Louisiana and requested help from the federal government, the Senate Republican majority voted down a measure calling for an independent commission to investigate what went wrong with federal, state and local governments' response to Hurricane Katrina. President Bush states that he plans to investigate and oversee what "went wrong" with the federal response to Hurricane Katrina. He must not be permitted to do this any more than he should have been allowed to stop every effort to have an independent investigation of the 911 disaster. An independent counsel and commission with full grand jury/subpoena authority are needed. More importantly, if one can still be found in this country; the independent counsel must be removed from both political and corporate connections. We may have to go to British MP George Galloway to find such a person but someone must expose the lickspittles of this administration and remove the curtain covering the Wizard of Oz. [...]

WASHINGTON, Sept. 21 -- At the same time that the Interior Department is bragging to Congress about its Indian Trust accounting plan, the National Archives and Records Administration reports ongoing destruction of Bureau of Indian Affairs accounting records only a few blocks from the federal courthouse in Washington.

In a filing last week, NARA disclosed that it is investigating "one or more incidents...involving what may be intentional acts aimed at unlawfully removing or disposing of permanent records from the Interior Department..."

In the letter dated Sept. 13, NARA attorney Jason R. Baron said that members of the agency "noticed what appeared to be federal records in one of the dumpsters" at the main achieves building on Pennsylvania Avenue on Sept. 1. Among the records destroyed were documents from the 1950s from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Baron said.

Subsequently, "more of what appear to be Indian records were discovered in a wastebasket in the stack areas at Main Archives," Baron said in the letter. "It is not known if these two incidents are related."

Baron said both the NARA Inspector General and the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia had begun investigations.

Dennis M. Gingold, lead plaintiff for the Indians who are seeking a full accounting of their government-managed individual Indian Trust accounts, called the destruction "the same repugnant, desperate actions we've come to expect from Interior Secretary Gale Norton and her unethical managers."

"Despite numerous court orders to preserve records related to the individual Indian Trust, the Secretary and the Interior Department continue to destroy irreplaceable trust documents three blocks from the federal courthouse where they were held in contempt for destroying trust records. Unless -- and until -- Norton is thrown in jail, she will continue to destroy trust documents in order to undermine this 10-year-old litigation," he said. "When a sitting cabinet level official feels that they can destroy protected trust records 60 yards from where the Constitution is displayed, we have a government that is out of control."

The Bureau of Indian Affairs runs a trust program for individual Indians. Although established in 1887, the government has yet to provide a complete accounting of funds in the accounts. A lawsuit filed in 1996 by Elouise Cobell, a member of the Blackfeet Tribe in Montana, is pressing the government over its repeated failures to give 500,000 Native Americans a proper accounting of the funds that should be in their accounts.

WHILE the debate continues as to whether or not there are any health risks attached to mobile phone masts, they continue to turn up around the country like the proverbial bad penny.

At present the World Health Organisation has no evidence that masts are harmful and, when opposing installations, residents are only too aware that this alarming possibility is still not grounds for refusal.

It is only a possibility and, to win their case, residents are best advised to battle the plans on grounds of siting and detriment to the character of the area.

Those living in the Ringley Park Avenue area of Reigate know this and so will be taking up the cudgel on these grounds in a bid to stop Hutchison 3G UK Ltd from putting a radio base station and mast in the avenue.

At the same time, residents are excited about the imminent release of a report from the Government's Health Protection Agency (HPA).

Lynn Myall, whose home at The Chase is most affected by the proposal, is keen for people to know about the HPA findings, which are reported to acknowledge for the first time that people can suffer adversely from being exposed to electromagnetic fields.

Many of her neighbours, including the nearby Dunottar School, are also worried and await the report, expected to make Britain second only to Sweden in formally acknowledging the dangers of electromagnetic fields.

Let us hope the residents win their fight to save the historic and beautiful Ringley Park Avenue from mast development on aesthetic grounds.

At the same time, let's not forget there are others around the country who claim mobile phone masts have made them ill.

A mobile phone company is set to steamroll over public opinion by erecting a mast next to schools and a health centre in Southfields.

The Southfields community is powerless to stop Vodafone putting up a 13.4m mast in Revelstoke Road.

The telecommunications equipment would emit radiation despite Wimbledon Park Primary School, two nurseries and the Revelstoke Road Surgery lying within a 300 yard radius.

Vodafone has applied for prior approval from Merton Council. The council can only prevent masts going up if they are more than 15m or are next to sensitive locations such as conservation areas and listed buildings.

It means the council is virtually powerless to stop the Vodafone mast and will have to grant approval on the September 22 deadline.

Nationwide mast planning guidance has come down as a government directive.

Wimbledon Park Councillor Tariq Ahmad said hundreds of signatures had been collected against the mast.

Coun Ahmad said: "More recent guidance out of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister calls for extensive consultation and taking into the account the views of residents, particularly where children are being impacted.

"Recent reports are showing there is a link between mobile phone masts and detrimental effects on children."

However a Vodafone spokeswoman stressed the radiation limits complied with international guidelines.

There's a primary school in Brighton that has had over 20 masts just 70 metres away for years and at exactly the same height. For just over a year they've also had an active TETRA from the same cluster. I've measured the microwaves around the playground on my EnvironCom and they show 4 - 6 vpm. I've tried to speak to the Headmistress but she just treats me like a crank.

Being on the advice line you hear a lot of things that tug at your heart, make you cry, or make you angry. You kind of get used to being exposed to so much, and are surprized to hear people remark on how calm you are. Then out of the blue a few words sets off all the upset and anger and you burn with rage, weep a thousand tears, and then you are back to normal again. I can't remember the last time I went through that, but the 20 masts just 70 m away from little children, plus on TETRA, did it for me tonight. I hoped Agnes' story might have that effect because I knew I was due for a blow out, but I read it avidly and nothing happened. I thought I had hardened up and I hated the idea of it.

So thank you,Gary, for this. What helps me most in doing the advice line is the wonderful people out there. A controversial mobile phone mast will be built in the centre of Bridgnorth after being passed at an appeal hearing despite public concerns, it was revealed today.

Plans to install the mast on top of the New Road telephone exchange were refused by councillors in February.

But they have now been passed at a planning appeal - much to the surprise of residents and councillors.

People living around the telephone exchange made their views against the mast clear, but an appeal on August 24 went against Bridgnorth Town Council and the district council's decisions and granted permission.

The application is by telecommunication company "3" to install a flagpole, housing three antennae, on the telephone exchange to boost signals for mobile phone users.

Town and district councillor, Brian Jones, said he was very disappointed with the outcome of the appeal.

"It is almost literally through the back door," he said.

Questions mount over Hurricane Katrina's death count. Estimates are now well below 10,000 with the death toll currently standing at 648 for Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida. So, why did the Bush Administration order 75,000 body bags?

Along that line, other things don’t add up. For instance, why did FEMA contact a crematorium in the local area; how could people identify their loved ones if only ashes remain? Why did FEMA rebuff efforts of volunteer morticians? Why did the feds try to ban reporters from covering the body recovery effort? Why have the feds employed mercenaries in New Orleans? Don't we have plenty of volunteers, police and military in the U.S. to get any job done that needs doing? What's really going on?

I don't know with any certainty, but here are some theories :
Maybe the Bush Administration doesn't want us to know how many people died because they just can't take the political heat for being completely incompetent. That's somewhat understandable. Maybe they ordered 75,000 body bags and hired Houston-based Blackwater mercenaries as more pork barrel projects. Nothing new there. Republicans on three separate congressional committees this week derailed three formal "resolutions of inquiry" by Democrats that would have required the Bush administration to turn over sensitive information and records relating to the outing of CIA officer Valerie Plame .

Had the resolutions of inquiry been adopted, they would have led to the first independent congressional inquiries of the Plame affair, and perhaps even the public testimony of senior Bush administration aides such as Karl Rove, the White House deputy chief of staff, and I. Last evening on the "US Intel News" show on the Turner Radio Network, Tom Heneghen gave an update on the progress of the grand juries in Chicago concerning their impending indictments of various members of the Bush administration, both past and present.

Apparently, there is brisk movement within the US Federal Court of Chicago to get these indictments out despite intense pressure from within by a Judge Magistrate named Mark R. Filip, who has thus far suppressed them from being released to the public, according to Heneghen. [...]

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- "Someone killed my dog," sputtered Royaltee Forman, still livid two weeks later.

"They just threw him out the window and hung him with his own leash," he said, convinced that someone broke into his home while he was out. "I mean, what kind of place has this become?"
Forman's place is FEMA City, a dusty, baking, treeless collection of almost 500 trailers that was set up by the federal emergency agency last fall to house more than 1,500 people made homeless by Hurricane Charley, one of the most destructive storms in recent Florida history. The free shelter was welcomed by thankful survivors back then; almost a year later, most are still there -- angry, frustrated, depressed and increasingly desperate.

"FEMA City is now a socioeconomic time bomb just waiting to blow up," said Bob Hebert, director of recovery for Charlotte County, where most FEMA City residents used to live. "You throw together all these very different people under already tremendous stress, and bad things will happen. Many activists are becoming impatient. I hope that our Congress people realize how important it is to check on those "home fires." Activists from women's groups, environmental groups, science supporters, Democrat groups, mainstream religious groups, education groups etc. tend to feel that the parties have had five years to clean up their act and yet the Democrats still seem a little wimpy about actually shutting Congress down.

And now we have a new thing to be disturbed about: Bush wants to use federal troops for domestic problems in our country. I suppose that this is because the Military seems to be the only Bush admin people who can actually DO anything. (You didn't get to be a four-star general by just having a few months of experience, unlike some court nominees I can think of.) Hopefully Bush will not be able to appoint his cronies and buddies to the Armed Services! But regardless, it is a boon for Bush to have the military in charge because then he can step up the use of military law to arrest people and leave them in prison forever if they want to.

One would think that with deficit spending at the rate we have (1B-2B A DAY), we would withdraw from Iraq, where we are not wanted and where we are not helping. Chicago joined many other cities in calling for the withdrawal of troops in Iraq. Bring 'em home, give them a ticker tape parade, and declare victory. Get the national guard back home, and in their states.

Somehow, everything seems depressing to me today, especially after I heard about what FEMA did in Florida; so you all, keep your heads especially high! As we women are told, never let them see you cry!

Anyway, here I am, a day late finishing this up -- so much to read, so little time. Did any of you ever stop and think what would happen if these thousands of messages were all in paper???

NY Police Monday broke up crowd listening to Cindy Sheehan's speech and arrested her organizer for not obtaining audio permits. They escorted Cindy away and it is not totally clear whether she was arrested. In trying to check out this story, I was often not able to bring up a web page. I hope that this is because the story is popular and not because someone is blocking access.

My experience is that shielding reduces the intensity, but does not change the structure (frequency, modulation/pulsation) of the radiation. So, if it is the structure making you sick, you could still get sick if the intensity is relatively low but still too high for you (if you are 'hypersensitive', this means you easily sense symptoms caused by consequences of effects of the radiation).

The structure of UMTS without traffic is not the same as with traffic.

In my sleeping case of Faraday (metal wire mesh 1 x 1 millimeter) in the sousterrain the measurement is 0,1 mikroWatt/m2 (about 0,007 V/m). I sleep well but inside I 'hear' microwaves (outside I do not, I suppose there the 'pressure' is too strong). The masts are at a distance of 350 metres, but still produce 0,7 V/m (about 1500 mikroWatt/m2) in the street. When I was in a village (no masts within five kilometres) where the measurement outside was 0,1 mikroWatt/m2 (without shielding), I did not 'hear' microwaves.

The airbus has a dodgy reputation, computors overiding what the pilot has inputted and if you saw the one that landed with its front nose wheel the wrong way around [that was an airbus on the news this morning and they say it isn't the first time this has happened] I hate to think what might eventually happen't with a phone mast there as well. I feel sorry for the poor crew!

But interesting that only a few days ago the press were running the concerns about so many unexplained air crashes, in some cases where the pilot had been using a mobile. The hypothesis was that instrumentation recording altitude was affected by the mobile and continued to misrecord after the call, leading pilots to fly into the ground.

This article today illustrates what a mad way of life we have come to lead: not only is the plane no longer fast enough, even that interrupts the ability to carry on working. For what?! Is it really so wasteful of life to spend it talking to fellow passengers? Just think, they could be discussing the contribution of air travel to climate change, or the impact of chemtrails! Or how to make life more enjoyable and in tune with the planet. Much more useful.

Addition to the below: Israel is going to be one of the first countries that enables Wi-Fi on the plane. El Al (the Israeli airline company) has just signed the deal. It's 2.45 GHz, and it enables you to do very important things on the plane, like radiating your neighbour. Who knows if it can't cause technical problems to the plane, just not long ago the navigation of a plane was disrupted by a passenger talking on his mobile. I think I will choose Lufthansa...

Airline passengers could soon be able to continue their mobile phone conversations in-flight, as a UK carrier becomes the first to allow mobiles to be used in a new trial.

Calls are currently banned in case signals interfere with a plane's navigation system.

Bmi (formerly British Midland Airways) will start the trial on an Airbus A320 late next year. The target market for bmi will be mainly business travellers flying out of Heathrow airport to UK destinations such as Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Belfast, and to European destinations such as Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels and Dublin.

The mobile signals will be diverted to a base station in the cabin and then sent directly to a satellite before they have a chance to interfere with onboard computers.

Bmi chief executive Nigel Turner said: "Our research tells us that our premium passengers have two key concerns. These are getting quickly through the airport and the ability to be able to carry on working during their journey."

To introduce the use of in-flight mobiles, bmi has signed a deal with OnAir, a joint venture involving planemakers Airbus, information company Sita and US software company Tenzing which pioneered in-flight email.

British Midland and TAP Air Portugal will permit passengers to use their mobile phones in the air next year, the two European airlines said this week.

Both companies will use base-station technology developed by OnAir, the Airbus-backed rival to Boeing's Connexion. OnAir uses pico-cell base-stations from Siemens, coupled with software from TriaGnoSys. The kit will be installed in 2006 with a view to commencing a trial service late in the year.

Initially, only a couple of aircraft will be equipped with the system. TAP will use OnAir on its single-aisle Airbus 321, and BMI on the Airbus 320. The target market for BMI will include business and leisure travellers to its destinations in Europe out of London's Heathrow, including Manchester, Belfast Edinburgh, Paris and Amsterdam. Travellers can use all GSM and GPRS handsets, including Blackberry devices.

However, there are a couple of restrictions. Passengers can use their phones only from 10,000ft - they will still not be able to use wireless devices during take off and landing. Charges have yet to be determined, but rates will be in line with current international roaming charges, OnAir said.

The incompetence and neglect of the current administration was laid bare by FEMA and hurricane Katrina. The funds for levy construction were sent to Iraq instead. The poor were left to fend for themselves in New Orleans while 40% of the Louisiana National Guard were in Iraq. But global warming has been rising off the charts, especially in the last fifteen years. Hurricanes have increased in intensity 60% and in duration 50% since 1949, with a pronounced increase in category four and five hurricanes in recent decades. But junior in the White House broke his campaign promise of 2000 to do something about global warming, and five years later our Southern Coastline is being systematically devastated from Florida to Texas in the last two years. Ironically, the oil industry states are being pummeled the worst. I wonder if they still believe global warming is a myth? Once again, the faith based presidency is being challenged by reality. From Social Security to Iraq to Downing Street Minutes to Karl Rove’s treason to Cindy Sheehan to Katrina and Rita, no wonder people have finally realized this is a loser in the White House. Too bad it’s one year too late. Like a battered housewife, so-called patriotic America doesn’t know when to quit on this blind fool. In the week before Hurricane Katrina struck, the U.S. government was busy insisting on the deletion of a simple phrase from the general principles of the United Nations -- "Respect for Nature." History may now look on Katrina as the perfect storm that ended, once and for all, such anthropocentric arrogance.

The scale of the Katrina tragedy offers a painful portal into our very heart and soul, the way we think about ourselves, one another and our world. In the rubble of homes and lives and businesses, Katrina provides a potent teachable moment for society.

The evolutionary success of Homo sapiens as a species depended on our ability to learn and to act on that knowledge. When we recognized a threat -- predators, weather, lack of resources, etc. -- we learned to act to avoid or prepare for it. In this context, Katrina has much to teach.

First, prepare for the worst. It is a historic, national disgrace that we did not do better. Katrina was a well-predicted flood disaster, a well-predicted storm and, to those observers of government bureaucracies, a well-predicted failure of government altogether.

Next, prevent disaster to the extent possible. A decade ago, Louisiana's "Coast 2050" plan recognized that a century of flood control on the Mississippi was shrinking the wetlands, bayous, barrier islands and the entire delta of our nation's greatest river, and, if left uncorrected, would with certainty lead to catastrophe. It was not a "0.5 percent probability" as the Army Corps of Engineers is now claiming. It was a certainty.

Scientists proposed a straightforward $14 billion pre-emptive fix to the problem -- build canals and floodgates in the south bank of the river in New Orleans and periodically open them to allow the river and its millions of tons of sediment to flush onto the delta, rebuild barrier islands, thus protecting the coast from inundation in future storm events. This would take decades, but the sooner it begins, the sooner the area will be protected.

The threat was perfectly clear, the solution was perfectly clear, yet government did nothing. To officials, these warnings were typical of "environmental alarmists" and government had other more immediate priorities. When Katrina hit, this government attention deficit came tragically due.

Herein may lie our potential evolutionary downfall -- our modern inability to act decisively and cooperatively to avert certain disaster.

In this way, Katrina may provide -- in fast-forward microcosm -- a vision of the very future of Homo sapiens itself. The transcendent lesson of this perfect storm may be that the natural environment is ignored only at our own peril. As Katrina swept away lives and life-support systems on the Gulf Coast, the tragedy may give focus to the deteriorating condition of the essential environmental services the planet provides for the health and welfare of all 6.5 billion of us -- air, freshwater, food, shelter, energy, medicines, nutrient recycling, waste processing, enjoyment, etc.

History is littered with fallen civilizations that ignored their deteriorating environmental condition -- the Anasazi, Maya, Greenland Norse, Easter Islanders, etc. And like Exxon Valdez, Chernobyl and Bhopal, Katrina will now take its place in history as one of the seminal, time-compressed disasters that provide an overnight glimpse of the long-term degradation of the life-support systems of our home planet.

On this larger issue, the science is perfectly clear. We are dangerously degrading our biosphere, and for decades policy-makers have been warned of the dire consequences of ignoring this systemic environmental decline. As with New Orleans, we are all living on borrowed time. We are rapidly approaching a planetary tipping-point from which there will likely be no recovery. But just as with Katrina, governments have ignored warnings of global ecological collapse as well. How much longer can we afford such shortsighted, selfish ignorance?

In Greek mythology, Cassandra was bestowed the power to foretell the future but no one would believe her. She warned of a Trojan Horse, to no avail. The rest, as they say, is history.

Will we as a society learn from this perfect storm, reaffirm our "respect for nature" and attend to our deteriorating planetary life-support systems before it's too late, or not?

This headline appeared in the London Independent in early February of 2005, following a conference at the Hadley Centre in Exeter, England, where 200 of the world’s leading scientists issued the most urgent warning to date: that dangerous climate change is taking place today, and not the day after tomorrow. Floods, storms, and droughts. Melting polar ice, shrinking glaciers, oceans turning to acid. Scientists from the fields of glaciology, biology, meteorology, oceanography, and ecology reported seeing a dramatic rise over the last 50 years of all the indicators of climate change: increase in average world temperatures, extreme weather events, in the levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, and in the level of the oceans. The award winning environmental writer Geoffrey Lean wrote: “Future historians, looking back from a much hotter and less hospitable world . . . will puzzle over how a whole generation could have sleepwalked into disaster -- destroying the climate that has allowed human civilization to flourish over the past 11,000 years.”....

Dear Cindy,

My name is Stuart Leeds - I'm the family practice MD that you met at the storage facility shortly before we all caravanned to Algiers today.

It was a great honor and delight to meet you! I'm also pleased and somewhat relieved to have the opportunity to give you a brief report on the state of affairs visa vi the medical relief effort in the afflicted areas.

In short strokes: people are not getting the help they need, because our government, through the agency of FEMA, has totally politicized the relief effort. I'm sure you've already gotten wind of the reports that the Bush Administration is handing out huge contracts to favored vendors, much as they have done in Iraq. But what is not widely known is - and I can verify this personally - that FEMA is preventing certain groups and individuals from participating in the relief efforts. Here's a quick synopsis of the experience I and my companions (my wife, and two respiratory therapists) had today, in our attempts to offer our services to the Red Cross operation in Covington, LA.

We got a call from an official at the Red Cross that the Vets for Peace were being invited to send doctors to Abita Springs, a nearby community.

When we got there around 9 AM, some of director Dr Rachel Murphy's assistants welcomed us, and started making lists of materials we would need.

Suddenly, a man wearing a Homeland Security shirt came over and rudely asked us to leave. He brought a local cop with him, and their body language was pretty threatening. We explained that we were coming at the request of both Dr. Murphy and the mayor of Covington, Candace Watkins. He (whose name was Rodney Hart) would hear none of it from us; he forced us to leave immediately.

We went to Mayor Watkins, who called Dr. Murphy and arranged for us to be allowed into the Red Cross center. We decided that only my wife and I would go - realizing that the other gentlemen, who were wearing VFP T-shirts, would be less than welcome at the center.

We met Dr. Murphy a little after noon, and she was very friendly. She told us she would find a place for us to work - I as a physician, and my wife as an organizational specialist. However, midway through our tour of the facility, she stepped into the office of Mr. Hart, the Homeland security rep, and there were some tense words exchanged between them. She repeatedly exclaimed that we were not representing VFP, and finally there was a long period of silence. Mr. Hart apparently made some gestures we couldn't see. She sighed, and turned to us, and abruptly suggested we get some lunch in the basement. As we ate, she started talking about how the Red Cross was pulling out of her parish within a week, how there were already an excess of docs, and that our services wouldn't be needed.

She also explained that the reason that VFP was not welcome with the Red Cross (or indeed, within the entire parish) was because of a series of allegations that we had already heard from others in the center. We had heard several conflicting versions of these stories: that someone with VFP had stolen $15,000 worth of medical supplies, and that he turned out to be a child molester; that the Vets for Peace had come to one center and were taking over, and bringing cameras into clinics; that VFP was illegally collecting Red Cross donations on the Internet.

We could not substantiate any of these rumors, and indeed, I think it's unlikely that there was truth to any of them.

Clearly, FEMA and/or Homeland Security is trying to keep "political undesirables" from lending a hand during this catastrophe. Perhaps they are marching to orders from Bush's political hacks to preventing peace groups from upstaging the administration in the relief effort - which would hardly be difficult to do, on anything like a level playing field.

It is so sad to think that the Bush machine would put politics in front of the safety and security of human beings, even in a the wake of a natural disaster of Katrina's magnitude. But in the eyes of this physician, I believe that is exactly what is happening. And it will continue, as long as the responsible government agencies can get away with it.

We must hold them accountable. But more importantly, we must let people know this is happening, and thus bring such pressure to bear on these obstructionist agencies that they can no longer keep VFP, or indeed any group of caring citizens from pitching in.

As I pack my bags to head to Washington for Congressional Black Caucus hearings on the September 11th attacks
(to be conducted this Friday and Saturday) my inbox is being progressively flooded with emails from inside sources in the energy industry about what Hurricane Rita is now likely to accomplish – the near-complete destruction of an already teetering U.S. economy.

Fully 30% of all U.S. refining capacity is in the target zone. Perhaps most importantly, almost every refinery capable of producing diesel fuel is in immediate danger.

This promises (especially in the wake of Katrina) a devastating and irreplaceable shortage of the diesel fuel needed to power America’s harvest of grain and food crops this month and next.

Without diesel fuel to power the harvesters and combines, crops may be left to rot in the ground presenting a double whammy: food shortages (with prices that may treble or quadruple) and export defaults negatively impacting the financial markets and trade deficit.

Even before Rita strikes, fully 30% of all domestic natural gas production is shut in.

The U.S. cannot import natural gas from overseas like it can both crude and refined products.

Repair work on infrastructure damaged by Katrina has been halted as crews have been evacuated. The remaining half of Gulf energy production undamaged by Katrina is directly in Rita’s crosshairs.

Natural gas prices are up over 110% and home heating oil futures are up almost 70% before Rita even gets here.

Since Katrina, U.S. domestic oil production is down one million barrels per day (from 5Mbpd to 4 Mbpd). We were producing 9 Mbpd less than a decade ago.

Peak Oil has made replacement of losses almost impossible even as Saudi heavy-sour is being spurned as useless around the world, even with discounts of up to $10 and $12 per barrel.

A Bloomberg article today contains a quotation from a Wall Street energy expert as saying, “‘Rita is developing into our worst-case scenario,’ said John Kilduff, vice president of risk management at Fimat USA in New York.

‘This is headed right into our other major refining center just after all the damage done to facilities in Louisiana. From an energy perspective it doesn't get any worse than this.’”

The Chairman of Valero Energy agrees with the Bloomberg assessment calling Rita a potentially national disaster.

His opinion is important because Valero operates more refineries in the U.S. than any other company.

CNN is now predicting $5 per gallon gasoline and this will not likely go away with market manipulations.

We had not yet experienced the permanent spikes resulting from Katrina, and the emergency reserves of the United States’ Strategic Petroleum Reserve and the International Energy Agency have already been tapped once and not refilled.

The South Texas Project nuclear plant – one of the largest in the country – is being completely shut down in preparation for Rita’s landfall.

It is only 12 miles from the Texas coast and almost dead center in the hurricane’s projected path.

Texas has its own power grid but catastrophic electricity shortages could easily ripple throughout the country in a short time.

Electricity lost from that that facility will only be added to what is lost from other facilities powered by now critically short supplies of natural gas.

For those of you who expect FEMA to behave any differently in Texas than it did in New Orleans you are in for a crude awakening.

FEMA will do what it must now do to preserve even a functioning part of America’s governing and economic infrastructure.

Saving lives will be one of the least important functions in its mandate.

While I had serious doubts about America’s ability to recover from Katrina, I am certain that – barring divine intervention – the United States is finished; not only as a superpower, but possibly even as a single, unified nation with the arrival of Hurricane Rita.

ECOTERRA observed this day by planting a thousand self-raised non-GM seedlings of endangered indigenous trees as enrichment planting in the lands of a people, who were and are the guardians of their forests in Kenya since thousands of years. Not enough we believe, but if you think likewise then extend your support to people near you, who do just do the same. International Day against Monoculture Tree Plantations

Planting trees is not always a good thing to do. It depends on the objective, the scale, the location of the plantation and the benefits or damages involved for the local population.

Large-scale monoculture tree plantations that have been promoted in the countries of the South with fast-growing species, such as eucalyptus and pine have generated considerable negative impacts, economically, socially and environmentally in the countries where they have been installed.

The Latin American Network against Monoculture Tree Plantations (Red Latinoamericana contra los Monocultivos de Árboles – RECOMA) an organization involving members from 16 countries, has been denouncing, inter alia, displacements of rural populations, loss of sources of work, appalling working conditions, the destruction of forests and other ecosystems, soil erosion, depletion and contamination of water.

In May 2004, the Brazilian "Network against the Green Desert" that has a considerable track record of resistance to tree plantations, held its 3rd National Meeting in the city of Bello Horizonte. On that occasion it decided to select the 21 September, National Tree Day, as a significant date to commemorate the struggle against monoculture tree plantations.

Convened by RECOMA, organizations from the whole region are adhering to this commemoration and will carry out various mobilizations.

In Brazil, the students of the Federal University have organized a mobilization to take place on that date in the capital of the State of Espirito Santo, with the participation of representatives of affected groups to denounce the workers’ situation and encroachment of the lands of the local communities by monoculture tree plantations.

In Argentina, in the Province of Entre Ríos the negative impacts of monoculture tree plantations will be given dissemination by the press and in the Province of Misiones native species will be planted as a symbolic way of rejecting the monoculture of exotic species that is covering the province.

Uruguay is joining in this celebration with an exhibition at the City Hall Esplanade, with the distribution of information, videos will be shown on a gigantic screen. they will include the impacts of monoculture tree plantations and the situation of Uruguayan forestry workers, prepared by the Association of Labour Inspectors of Uruguay.

For those of us who believe that "another world is possible", governmental policy must make a radical change. It must cease its support of monoculture tree plantation companies and centre its support on the men and women who live in rural environments to enable them to improve their quality of life, while ensuring environmental quality.
