Did you know that some of the members of the Bildeburg group are very powerful media tycoon's? Can you ever expect that main press will be anything but controlled.

Just to refresh our memories in case they fade, Bilderburg's next meeting (2005) is in the UK!!!

Some past and present media members - l can take a long shot, and dare to suggest that this is why the press is not quite on the ball (laugh).

US Illegally Removes Pages from Iraq UN Report

Throughout the winter of 2002, the Bush administration publicly accused Iraqi weapons declarations of being incomplete. The almost unbelievable reality of this situation is that it was the United States itself that had removed over 8,000 pages of the 11,800 page original report.

This came as no surprise to Europeans however, as Iraq had made extra copies of the complete weapons declaration report and unofficially distributed them to journalists throughout Europe. The Berlin newspaper Die Tageszetung broke the story on December 19, 2002 in an article by Andreas Zumach.

At the same time, according to the investigation by Michael Niman, the Iraq government sent out official copies of the report on November 3, 2002. One, classified as "secret," was sent to the International Atomic Energy Agency, another copy went to the UN Security Council. The U.S. convinced Colombia, chair of the Security Council and current target of U.S. military occupation and financial aid, to look the other way while the report was removed, edited, and returned. Other members of the Security Council such as Britain, France, China and Russia, were implicated in the missing pages as well (China and Russia were still arming Iraq) and had little desire to expose the United States' transgression. So all members accepted the new, abbreviated version.

But what was in the missing pages that the Bush administration felt was so threatening that they had to be removed? What information were Europeans privy to that Americans were not?

According to Niman, "The missing pages implicated twenty-four U.S.-based corporations and the successive Ronald Reagan and George Bush Sr. administration in connection with the illegal supplying of Saddam Hussein government with myriad weapons of mass destruction and the training to use them." Groups documented in the original report that were supporting Iraq's weapons programs prior to Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait included:

- Eastman Kodak, Dupont, Honeywell, Rockwell, Sperry, Hewlett-Packard, and Bechtel,

- U.S. government agencies such as the Department of Energy, Department of Agriculture and Department of Defense,

- Nuclear weapons labs such as Lawrence-Livermore, Los Alamos and Sandia.

Beginning in 1983, the U.S. was involved in eighty shipments of biological and chemical components, including strains of botulism toxin, anthrax, gangrene bacteria, West Nile fever virus, and Dengue fever virus. These shipments continued even after Iraq used chemical weapons against Iran in 1984. Later, in 1988 Iraq used the chemical weapons against the Kurds.

But perhaps most importantly, the missing pages contain information that could potentially make a case for war crimes against officials within the Reagan and the Bush Sr. administrations. This includes the current Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld — for his collaboration with Saddam Hussein leading up to the massacres of Iraqi Kurds and acting as liaison for U.S. military aid during the war between Iraq and Iran.

UPDATE BY MICHAEL I. NIMAN

The first time I had a story nominated for a Project Censored award was in 1989 after I went into the bush on Costa Rica’s remote Osa Peninsula to track pirate gold miners and the U.S. military. I drank stagnant water to battle dehydration and picked ticks from my body. In short, I went after the story.

This was different. I didn’t break this story. It was broken by German reporter Andreas Zumach and brought to the U.S. by Amy Goodman on her Democracy Now radio show. No media outlet in my hometown of Buffalo covered it, so I added some media analysis, a few rants about censorship, and ran it in Buffalo’s weekly ArtVoice. Since the national media never picked up the story, The Humanist took my story nationwide. I didn’t use primary sources for this story. I just monitored the alternative and foreign press. With such thorough self-censorship in the U.S. press – reading the international press is now akin to going into the remote bush.

It is now five months later and there are still no new developments regarding this story. No corporate or government figures have been indicted. There is no investigation. The major media still hasn’t carried the story. In its place, however, most media outlets ran false pronouncements from the Bush administration about pending Iraqi weapons programs. We now know that these weapons no longer existed. And that the Bush administration was able to hijack the U.S. into war based on a combination of misinformation and missing information.

Handy-Ortungsdienste kommen in Mode

http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/inside/org/ministers/goggins.html.

http://www.trackyourkid.de/ .

z.B.

bei: http://www.gigaherz.ch, http://www.buergerwelle.de , http://omega.twoday.net und speziell unter: http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/eltern_enkel_01_031116.doc ,
http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/hirnschaeden_bei_ratten_durch_handystrahlung.pdf

http://buergerwelle.de/pdf/reflex_studie_aerzte_zeitung_0406.doc.

Orwell Rolls in His Grave

"Could a media system, controlled by a few global corporations with the ability to overwhelm all competing voices, be able to turn lies into truth?..."

Director Robert Kane Pappas’ "Orwell Rolls In His Grave" is the consummate critical examination of the Fourth Estate, once the bastion of American democracy. Asking whether America has entered an Orwellian world of doublespeak where outright lies can pass for the truth, Pappas explores what the media doesn’t like to talk about: itself.

“Orwell Rolls in His Grave”: Great Concept, Flawed Film

“Orwell Rolls in His Grave” is an interesting but uneven new semi-documentary film by Robert Kane Pappas that examines the relationship between the 5 or so big media companies that manufacture our info-tainment “news” and the political operatives in Washington DC. The film is in limited release. Mr. Pappas gets high marks for reminding the audience of “forgotten” stories from the 24/7 news cycle and how the media often manufactures series of unimportant stories on trivial matters, while missing or simply failing to report stories that editors and news directors deem “too difficult” or “too complex” for the general public. The tools and techniques of propaganda are examined alongside the relationships between the politicians who regulate the media, and who, at the same time, are beholden to the media in order to get their faces and sound bites before their constituents. Pappas makes stunning use of timelines and quotes, as well as historical and literary references to reveal just how superficial, manipulative and down-right wrong “news” reporting is on a regular basis.

While thought provoking and worth the price of admission, the film is flawed by Mr. Pappas’s limited interviews and sources. A legitimate, thorough, documentary on such a complex topic as the Orwellian manipulation of our news and political discourse cannot rest solely on the interview of just one congressman (among other journalists and academics) – particularly when that congressman is Bernie Sanders, the "Independent” (Socialist) from Vermont. Does Mr. Pappas wish us to believe that no other congressman were willing to go on camera and talk about this subject? Doesn’t Mr. Pappas have an obligation to interview (or even attempt to interview -- a la’ Michael Moore) a broader cast of congressional characters?

ORWELL ROLLS IN HIS GRAVE

Sag Harbor-Basement Pictures

Director Robert Kane Pappas’ ORWELL ROLLS IN HIS GRAVE is the consummate critical examination of the Fourth Estate, once the bastion of American democracy. Asking whether America has entered an Orwellian world of doublespeak where outright lies can pass for the truth, Pappas explores what the media doesn’t like to talk about: itself. Meticulously tracing the process by which media has distorted and often dismissed actual news events, Pappas presents a riveting and eloquent mix of media professionals and leading intellectual voices on the media.

Among the cast of characters in ORWELL ROLLS IN HIS GRAVE are Charles Lewis, director of the Center for Public Integrity, Vincent Bugliosi, former L.A. prosecutor and legal scholar, film director and author Michael Moore, Rep. Bernie Sanders, Danny Schecter, author and former producer for ABC and CNN, and Tony Benn, former member of the British Parliament.

Spy-in-the-sky tags attacked as cheap alternative to jail

David Blunkett was accused yesterday of planning to use satellite technology to track criminals as a cheap alternative to jail. The Home Secretary gave the go-ahead for a pilot scheme involving around 120 offenders in three areas who will be fitted with tags and monitored through the Global Positioning System network.

He called the initiative - which could be extended to cover thousands of offenders - a "prison without bars". It will be used as an alternative to custody and to enforce licence conditions imposed on people, including sex offenders, released from jail. The idea was first floated several years ago by the Conservatives but Dominic Grieve, a Tory legal spokesman, questioned the Government's motives for bringing in the scheme yesterday.

"While we support the tagging of certain prisoners, David Blunkett should not tag prisoners and let them out of jail earlier simply as a way of freeing up space in our already overcrowded prisons," he said...

http://makeashorterlink.com/?M27814639

Welcome to the prison without bars

Satellite trackers mean police can watch offenders' every step "Every step you take, I'll be watching you," sang the pop trio, The Police, in 1983. Now the real law enforcement agency is using satellite technology to do just that. Officers will keep tabs on paedophiles, domestic abusers and other prolific criminals 24 hours a day, thanks to an innovative tracking scheme launched in three pilot areas in England yesterday.

A total of 120 offenders, 40 each in Greater Manchester, Hampshire, and the West Midlands, will be fitted with devices that can pinpoint their position to within two metres...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,3604,1296246,00.html

How tracking of offenders works

The satellite tracking of offenders being piloted by the government from Thursday allows their location to be pinpointed to within two metres. Offenders wear an electronic ankle tag with a wireless connection to a belt-worn device that transmits co-ordinates to the tracking system. An alarm is triggered if this device is separated from the anklet. Home Secretary David Blunkett has said satellite tracking technology could create a "prison without bars" where "first-time low-level non-violent offenders would actually be tracked rather than sent to short-term prison sentences". Several US states use satellite technology to monitor offenders' movements. Florida introduced the technology in 1998 and is the largest user, tracking around 3,000 criminals.

The technology will be used following an offender's release from prison or to ensure compliance with an exclusion order stopping an offender going to certain places.

Suppress the African American Vote, by any means possible

More Blacks locked up, denied vote in key election states

A new report released Wednesday examining prison growth in the 17 key battleground states found that prison spending grew five times as fast as higher education spending between 1985 and 2002. Nearly 2 million adults in the 17 key electoral states are ineligible to vote due to felony disenfranchisement laws in those states. Both trends disproportionately affect the African American population in those 17 states, according to the report by the non-profit Justice Policy Institute. “Prisons are growing, education is suffering and the African American community hit hardest is increasingly shut out of the debate,” states Vincent Schiraldi, executive director of the institute and report co-author. “As presidential candidates mine these states for votes, voters need to hear about how they intend to create a more balanced approach to crime that doesn’t rob education to fund prisons.”

As with previous studies, “Swing States and Prisons” found a dubious connection between increases in incarceration and decreases in crime, both within and outside the swing states: Pennsylvania’s incarceration rate grew more than twice as much as Ohio’s between 1993 and 2002 - 52.9 percent vs. 19.6 percent - yet they had similar declines in crime...

The People's Right to Know

Pentagon Censors Gov't Openness 'Right to Know' Videotape

The Pentagon censored some footage in public versions of a Humphrey Bogart-themed videotape that cost $70,500 to produce and was intended to teach government employees to respond to citizens' requests for information. Parts of the training video, "The People's Right to Know" were blacked out and replaced with the message, "copyrighted material removed for public viewing." Defense Department officials said they did so because they worried the government did not have legal rights to some historical footage that was included.

Citing the Freedom of Information Act, The Associated Press asked the Pentagon for a copy of the video nearly 18 months ago. The department released an edited version of the tape and acknowledged the irony of censoring a video promoting government openness. "We knew it would be embarrassing," said Suzanne Council of the Army Office of the Chief Attorney, which gave advice to censor the scenes because of copyright concerns.

The 22-minute video features a narrator in a trench coat who resembles Sam Spade, the detective played by Bogart in the 1941 classic "The Maltese Falcon."

Guantanamo on the Hudson

Police hold 1,000 at 'Guantanamo on the Hudson'

DEMONSTRATORS rallied at a makeshift detention centre dubbed “Guantanamo on the Hudson” yesterday after a night of skirmishes outside the Republican Convention in New York led to almost 1,000 arrests. The former bus garage on Pier 57 on the Hudson River in Manhattan has been converted into a holding pen and is now crowded with protesters picked up during street battles with police during a day of “direct action”. “In that building, there are pens 10-12ft wide ringed by concertina wire and they are putting 30 to 40 people into the pen at a time,” Katya Komisaruk, a lawyer from the National Lawyers’ Guild, said. She added that she had been barred from meeting detainees. “The people in that building have been chanting: ‘We want to see our lawyers. We want to see our lawyers’,” she said. “Their cellphones have been taken from them.” United for Peace and Justice, the group which called the demonstration, said that the building contained asbestos and spilt oil from its former use. One woman who had to sleep on the ground, the group said, was taken to hospital because of reaction to a chemical beneath the concrete floor.

The arrests came as protesters converged on police barricades surrounding the Republican convention at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan on Tuesday night...

Making Protest Painful: Detained RNC Protesters Held in Crowded, Oil-Contaminated Conditions

Hundreds of detained protesters remain in a holding facility in New York despite a judge's order to release them.

Protests against the Republican convention continued yesterday throughout New York City. The police arrested 19 people in separate incidents, bringing the total of those detained so far during seven days of relentless convention-related protests to more than 1,760 - a record for a political convention. Hundreds of people protested the conditions under which those arrested are being held before going to court saying the site was contaminated with oil and asbestos. Pier 57 is a three-story, block-long pier that has been converted to a holding pen. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has denied the city was operating what some called "Guantanamo-on-the-Hudson." And defended the use of the of the pier garage saying "It's not supposed to be Club Med."

Last night, a judge ordered protesters who had been held for 24-hours released with desk appearance tickets if they were not charged with serious crimes. Before midnight, some protesters started emerging from 100 Centre St. around the block from our firehouse studio. Some 200 supporters greeted them with cheers and offered food and medical treatment. Despite the judge's orders, a large number of protesters remain imprisoned...

NYPD Cracks Down On RNC Protestors

A day of organized protests at the Republican National Convention resulted in more than 1,000 arrests all over New York on Tuesday. As police sirens squealed through the evening twilight across Manhattan — with confrontations occurring from the Ground Zero site downtown to the New York Public Library on 42nd Street — many observers were left questioning what led to so many arrests, and how the arrested parties were chosen. As had been openly discussed by activists for weeks before the convention, August 31 was earmarked as the day when licensed marches would give way to covert, non-violent direct actions. Yet their plans were so thoroughly publicized on the Internet that a Tuesday-morning edition of The New York Times printed a map correctly forecasting many of the locations where such events were going to take place. And, as members of the New York Police Department are perfectly capable of opening a daily newspaper, an overwhelming presence of officers was prepared at every site.

Despite the fact that most actions remained non-violent as advertised, and contrary to negotiations with protesters at numerous locations that may have allowed those actions to continue, the NYPD ended up using a strategy of arrests, rather than containment. Spokespeople for the NYPD did not return MTV News' calls for comment at press time.

Thousands arrested in battle for New York

There have been complaints and plaudits for the New York police this week as they toiled to contain myriad protests that erupted in Manhattan, arresting almost 2,000 people over four days, but mostly managing to keep activists away from the Republican Convention. Once again yesterday, the streets of the city were coloured dark blue with the uniforms of thousands of police officers, and the skies vibrated with helicopters and a large NYPD airship as commanders braced for more noisy demonstrations on the last night of the convention, attended by President George Bush.

While many more people have been arrested than at the famously anguished Democratic convention in Chicago in 1968, there has been little serious violence, barring any ugly turn of events later last night. Most arrests have come when protesters marched without permits or blocked roads or pavements.

Police arrest more than 900

A massive wave of civil disobedience hit New York City yesterday as thousands of activists sat in the streets, screamed "Shut up!" to Fox News and attempted a march on Madison Square Garden to protest President Bush's administration and the Republican National Convention. More than 900 people were arrested during the planned day of "direct action" that began with protests at a GOP breakfast sponsored by Halliburton and culminated in the evening with a surreal scene at Herald Square where barricaded demonstrators yelled anti-Bush slogans as helicopters circled above and police loaded patrol wagons. While all this was going on around him, MSNBC's Chris Matthews broadcast his show, "Hardball," from the center of the square. Throughout the day, scores of police on motor scooters, bicycles and horseback rode from one demonstration to another, in some cases rounding up protesters, and even some bystanders, with orange netting.

Although police reported a few assaults on officers by protesters, and witnesses said some protesters were treated roughly, the chaotic day was largely peaceful. The activity was consistent with that of previous days, with peaceful demonstrations on a scale never recorded at a political convention.

Robocop Now in Beta

Police at this summer's US political conventions are being outfitted with unblinking digital eyes connected to a wireless optic nerve. If you're in New York City when the Republican National Conventions kicks off next week, watch for police officers watching you with extra sets of megapixel peepers. The Federal Protective Service has outfitted patrol officers with helmets embedded with wireless video cameras. The images from the helmet-cams and traditional surveillance cameras mounted in federal buildings are streamed to a headquarters-on-wheels where deployment decisions can be made. "This is an added bonus," the service's regional director, Ronald Libby, told New York Newsday. "I want to know what he [a patrol officer] sees to make a decision. ... This takes the guess work out of it." According to the Newsday article, the signals are then encrypted and beamed to the Net via satellite for other officers to view via wirelessly enabled mobile PCs. The system is part of a larger digital video-surveillance system accessible via traditional Internet protocols. LiveWave Inc. provided the network capabilities through their FirstView product, a combination video encoder, camera controller and server that supports thousands of cameras, sensors, and users.

LiveWave was contracted to deploy the same technology in Boston for last month's Democratic National Convention.

New York Police Tighten Security as Terror Alert Names Targets

New York ``Hercules'' police teams wearing body armor and toting submachine guns surrounded the New York Stock Exchange today, one of five buildings in New York, Washington and New Jersey cited by U.S. officials as likely targets of an al-Qaeda bomb plot. Amid the clampdown, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer and NYSE Chief Executive John Thain stood for about 20 minutes at the Broad and Wall streets entrance of the exchange, greeting employees as they passed with their green identification cards. ``The security has been unbelievable,'' said Brian Teague, 21, a University of Connecticut student working as a summer intern for the exchange. ``The police are everywhere.'' Thain repeatedly told reporters that today was ``business as usual'' at the 212-year-old institution, which closed for four trading days after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Schumer said he and Thain were ``there to show solidarity with the people of the New York Stock Exchange and the people of New York City. New Yorkers are a plucky group.'' U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge announced the alert and identified the potential targets yesterday after intelligence authorities discovered al-Qaeda plans that Ridge described as unusually specific. The plot aims at major attacks on financial institutions symbolic of U.S. influence in the global economy, according to Ridge.

Tools of Crowd Control: Scooters and Mesh Netting

With no permit but an agreement with police commanders to keep sidewalks clear and not block traffic, antiwar marchers on Tuesday afternoon stepped off the curb near ground zero for a march to Madison Square Garden. But in less than 10 minutes, hundreds of the protesters were corralled behind orange mesh netting, folding their arms behind their backs to be handcuffed and crying out to police officers, "Why are we being arrested?" "What are the charges?" The arrests of roughly 200 people engaged in a peaceful rally emerged as a flashpoint yesterday, with civil libertarians complaining that the efforts to keep streets and sidewalks clear and not allow demonstrations near the Garden without a permit have come at the cost of First Amendment rights.

The police, on the other hand, argued that they have bent over backward to accommodate peaceful protesters even when they lack permits, and are forced to act when certain rules are broken.

Man Held for Coming Within Feet of Cheney

A 21-year-old Yale student, posing as a volunteer at the Republican National Convention, got within 10 feet of Vice President Dick Cheney and shouted anti-war statements before being dragged away, authorities said Tuesday. Secret Service Agent Shannon Zeigler said Cheney "was never in any harm or danger" during the incident Monday night in Madison Square Garden. The suspect, Thomas Frampton, was charged with assaulting federal officers and impeding the operation of the Secret Service.

Frampton was released on $50,000 bail and told to stay 100 feet from Cheney and President Bush. He also was ordered to give back a red convention volunteer's shirt he used to get into the arena, along with any convention passes.

Third-grader arrested for disorderly conduct

An Espanola third-grader was handcuffed and arrested by police after hitting another student with a basketball, the child's mother and her lawyer say. "The Legislature never envisioned that the law would be used to lock an 8-year-old in any jail, especially an adult jail," attorney Sheri Raphaelson said. "This is the most egregious example of poor judgment by police that I've ever seen in my 15 years of practicing law," she said. According to a juvenile citation for disorderly conduct, Jerry Trujillo was arrested Thursday and booked into the Espanola jail after he "got out of control and refused to go back to class."

Police Chief Richard Guillen, who was not at work Thursday, said he had few details but that officers "couldn't deal with" the boy before taking him into custody.

Protesters Allege 9/11 Terror Attacks Were Government Conspiracy

On the final day of the Republican National Convention, protesters gathered where the World Trade Center once stood to allege a massive government conspiracy and cover-up regarding the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. The protest, which was part of the official "counter convention calendar" of events, alleged that the U.S. government needed an excuse to seize power in America, and it either allowed the terror attacks to happen or was actively involved in them. The afternoon event, sponsored by 911truth.org, was called "Vigil For Truth at Ground Zero." "[9/11] was an inside job, a fraud, a scam, equivalent of the [burning] of the Reichstag that led to a reign of terror across Nazi Europe. And it seems like that's what is happening now," protestor David Hylander told CNSNews.com. The burning of the Reichstag, Germany's parliament building, in 1931 gave Adolph Hitler the opportunity to consolidate his power and suppress civil liberties. Hylander, from Vermont, carried a sign that featured a photo likeness of President George W. Bush as Osama bin Laden. The sign read, "Wanted for terror, murder: Osama 'Bush' Laden." The government has served as "the conspirators in this in order to unleash a reign of terror on the planet," Hylander said.

"We have seen stolen elections, the abrogation of international treaties, the escalation of the destruction of the planet" since 9/11, he added.

Zogby Poll: Half of New Yorkers Believe Government Complicity in 9/11

Half of New Yorkers Believe US Leaders Had Foreknowledge of Impending 9-11 Attacks and “Consciously Failed” To Act; 66% Call For New Probe of Unanswered Questions by Congress or New York's Attorney General, New Zogby International Poll Reveals On the eve of a Republican National Convention invoking 9/11 symbols, sound bytes and imagery, half (49.3%) of New York City residents and 41% of New York citizens overall say that some of our leaders "knew in advance that attacks were planned on or around September 11, 2001, and that they consciously failed to act," according to the poll conducted by Zogby International.

The poll of New York residents was conducted from Tuesday August 24 through Thursday August 26, 2004. Overall results have a margin of sampling error of +/-3.5. The poll is the first of its kind conducted in America that surveys attitudes regarding US government complicity in the 9/11 tragedy. Despite the acute legal and political implications of this accusation, nearly 30% of registered Republicans and over 38% of those who described themselves as "very conservative" supported the claim. The charge found very high support among adults under 30 (62.8%), African-Americans (62.5%), Hispanics (60.1%), Asians (59.4%), and "Born Again" Evangelical Christians (47.9%).

Freedom is on the march

Freedom is on the march: Bush

Declaring that "freedom is on the march", he expressed his determination to finish the job in Iraq, defeat global terrorism and spread democracy throughout the Middle East. Invoking powerful memories of September 11, President George W Bush launched his final drive to the November election today by presenting himself as a battle-tested leader who can guide the nation through dangerous times. Acknowledging his flaws as well as his strengths, Bush asked Americans to give him four more years to make the country safer, stronger and more prosperous.

He assured cheering delegates at the Republican convention that he would never falter in his "solemn duty to protect the American people".

Bush accepted his party's presidential nomination in Madison Square Garden, several kilometres from the site of the terrorist attacks that shook the nation and altered the course of his president...

Commander-In-Chief

by Marty Jezer

The Republican Party is determined to sell George W. Bush as the indispensable commander-in-chief, the one political leader bold enough to win the war against terror. He’s another Winston Churchill, Rudy Giuliani gushed in his speech at the Republican National Convention. Bush has taken the fight to the terrorists and is going to destroy them, Giuliani promised. Wimpy Europeans and waffling Democrats, by contrast, show weakness preferring diplomacy, he argued. Keynote speaker Zell Miller even suggested that Bush was more than just a mere President. As Commander-in-Chief, Bush stands above criticism, Miller implied. Democrats who dare to denigrate his leadership are unpatriotic. But the rhetoric of the Republican National Convention doesn’t mesh with observable reality. One could argue, and the Democrats should argue, that George W. Bush has been spectacularly inept as commander-in-chief of the war against terrorism....

Media Reform Needed for a Continuing Democracy

by Peter Phillips

The First Amendment of the US constitution, guaranteeing freedom of the press, was established to maximize citizen cognition of critical issues in society. It was understood clearly by the founders that Democracy could only be maintained through an informed electorate. A daily newspaper, along with the three major TV networks, ABC, CBS, NBC, as well as CNN, MSNBC, and Fox, are the major sources of news and information for most Americans. News stories and the invidious entertainment segments from these corporate sources generally have similar themes and common frames of understanding. This concentration of access to media sources leaves most Americans with very narrow parameters of news awareness and an almost complete lack of competing opinions.

Important questions that impact most Americans are generally ignored. Why are 45 million American without health care? Why is poverty increasing in the US? What happened to the safety net of social programs for the disadvantaged? What are the underlying reasons - other than oil - for the invasion and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan? Will the military draft be re-instituted in the US after the 04 election? What is the truth behind global warming and extreme weather conditions? Where have all the living wage jobs gone? Why is minimum wage now at 60% of its value in 1968? Who got rich in the 90s and kept the money? Who owns the electronic voting machine companies?

Surprise! The whole world now knows the nation of Iraq was defenseless before the "only remaining" Mighty Super Power War Machine. It was a turkey shoot. Like shooting fish in a barrel. The far superior American weapons guaranteed killing, maiming, cooking, and dismembering Iraqi soldiers and civilians; that much was child's play. The really good part, as far as a beaming President Bush and his Neo-Cons were concerned, was the unseen slaughter of the Iraqi soldiers' and civilian's children and grand children into eternity with great birth defects and fearsome cancers! War Crimes are a good thing to the Neo-Cons. Iraq is a Nuclear Radiation War fought against a long vanquished enemy with Fourth Generation Nuclear Weapons for fun and profit. "I trust God speaks through me. Without that, I couldn’t do my job."
-- George W. Bush

Mark Twain would not have considered President Bush's piety to be genuine or unique. In 1905 Twain wrote: "There was never a century nor a country that was short of experts who knew the Deity’s mind and were willing to reveal it." In addition to the neocons who are running the Pentagon, it also sounds like Twain had Lt. Gen. William Boykin pegged too. While describing a battle against a Muslim warlord in Somalia in 1993, Boykin said, "I knew my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real God and his was an idol." Imagine Mark Twain presiding over a White House prayer breakfast with this petition....

From Protest to Rebellion

by Jeff Milchen and Jeffrey Kaplan

When Tom Paine published his pamphlet “Common Sense” in January of 1776, six months before the Declaration of Independence was signed, he had a clear objective: to transform protest into rebellion. Though armed clashes began several months earlier in Massachusetts and the South, colonists generally viewed themselves as English subjects fighting a tyrannical king and government. For all of their anger, colonists were protesting the king and Parliament for disregarding rights, not challenging the government's legitimacy. . . .Common Sense” was wildly successful. By the spring of 1776 newspapers were reporting on "innumerable converts to independence,” including “tens of thousands of common farmers and tradesmen.” Though Paine called with burning urgency for the colonies to break away from Britain, he began by persuading readers that the source of the colonists' problems went far beyond corrupt or abusive English government to the very structure of rule by hereditary kings and nobility.

Paine's approach may inform our own strategy as we struggle to halt oppression at the hands of the dominant institution of our time -- the corporation. Today's corporations not only wield immense power over our law and government, they also control many physical conditions of our existence. Agribusiness dominates our food supply; the oil, energy and chemical industries determine what's in the air we breathe; and, to a frightening extent, corporations influence whether we live in peace or in war....

What’s Driving the Attack on Pensions?

by Lee Sustar

Corporate America is rushing to get out of pension payments while the getting is good--before the crisis in retirement benefits eases. And for organized labor, the stakes on pensions are higher than ever. The news that United Airlines is prepared to kill its $8.3 billion pension plan and hand over the remains to the federal Pensions Benefits Guaranty Corp. (PBGC) raised the possibility that other airlines would follow suit....

The Bush Administration's War Against Our Health

by Nicholas Skala

In an attempt to discourage the cross-border flow of reasonably priced pharmaceuticals, the FDA recently announced fears that terrorists might target foreign drugs bound for the U.S. But for millions of needy Americans, the Bush administration’s friendly ties with health industry CEOs constitute a far greater danger. Now that Western intervention has brought Afghanistan boundless prosperity and the Iraqi model of freedom and democracy is inspiring backward Arab nations to abandon their despotic ways, the Bush Administration has seen fit to open up the next front in the War on Terrorism in the world's newest rogue nation: Canada. Our northern neighbor continues to provide safe haven that most loathsome of threats: affordable prescription medications for sick Americans.
Good news for patients, but a danger to drug companies with an interest in keeping American drugs the most expensive on the planet and the deep pockets to buy politicians. After sustaining sufficient embarrassment over their charge that Canadian drugs were too “unsafe” for Americans to reimport, the FDA -- who has recently intervened in three lawsuits on behalf of potentially unsafe medical products -- announced a new reason for keeping inexpensive medicine on the far side of the border: terrorists might tamper with them....

Taking on Dangerous Lies

Taking on Dangerous Lies: A Response to Zell Miller’s Speech

by M. Junaid Alam

On September 1st Democratic Senator Zell Miller delivered a speech to the Republican National Convention gushing with praise for the president and venom for his own party’s nominee. He exalted the Republican Party as the only force that can best protect and preserve the future of his “most precious possession” - his family - because of its aggressive stance in the international “war on terror,” and derided the Democrats for making the country “weaker” with their “manic obsession” to unseat Bush. What strikes the conscious American as most disgraceful about the senator is not his betrayal of the party to which he belongs, but his allegiance to the most dishonest set of positions to which justice and reason have never belonged. The promulgation of poisonous myths about the war abroad, like the eagerness of a nervous public to eat up those myths, is the greatest danger confronting America today....

Republican Conventional Lies

Have you no sense of decency, Karl?

by Ahmed Amr

On the eve of the Republican National Convention, Karl Rove went public with the GOP’s battle plan. Speaking of Bush, he said, “People know who he is and they know what his beliefs are and they know who he is and they know what his beliefs are.” Is that clear enough? Because if it isn’t, Rove went on to repeat the same redundant lines. “We’re going to be able to remind people of who he is and what he is all about. I mean, this is a person that, whether you agree with his policies or not, people tend to like him. They know that he believes what he believes and says what he believes.”.

. . . One must give grudging credit to the GOP for the Stalinist discipline of their party. Starting with Rudy Giuliani’s speech at the Republican National Convention, every line was vintage ‘Rove speak’. McCain, Schwarzenegger, Zell Miller and Cheney echoed much of what Rudy said – especially in regards to the war on terror. What was remarkable about all five speeches was the absence of any reference to Bin Laden, Abu Ghraib, neo-conservatives, non-existent WMDs, the Iraqi insurgency and the fact that Afghanistan remains unfinished business....

Stop the Peonization of American Labor

by Dennis Rahkonen

American workers are deliberately being turned into little more than glorified peons. Their good union jobs have been outsourced to peanut-pay locales overseas, and those lucky enough to find any replacement employment at all must try making ends meet with annual wages averaging $9,000 less than before. Benefits and pensions have broadly been whittled away to uselessness, or eliminated altogether. Recent data disclosed that U.S. poverty climbed for the third straight year, as did the number of our citizens without health insurance. Nearly 45 million of us are medically uninsured, a larger total than the entire population of many world countries. In a high percentage of those countries, however, affordable, single-payer insurance protects everyone. What an embarrassment for America to be so backward in such a key human regard! Our shameful decline is humiliatingly evident in other pivotal areas as well....

Attempt to Silence Treaty and Land Rights Assertions Being Made by the Western Shoshone Nation

Press Release – For Immediate Release

September 3, 2004

California Rancher Pleads Guilty to Western Shoshone Horses’ Abuse and Grand Theft

Crescent Valley, NV. On September 2, 2004, the California Rancher, Slick Gardner, who took Western Shoshone horses rounded up by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management from Western Shoshone grandmothers Mary and Carrie Dann pled guilty to grand theft and felony animal abuse. The sentencing hearing will be held Oct. 6 before Judge Arthur Garcia in Santa Barbara County. The Western Shoshone horses are being removed to safety under the care of the non-profit organization, Wildhorses in Need. Other horses received by Mr. Gardner through State and Federal programs/roundups are also being removed according to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s office. The guilty pleas and removal of the horses ends a nearly two year long ordeal initiated by federal actions under the Bush Administration in an apparent attempt to silence treaty and land rights assertions being made by the Western Shoshone Nation to millions of acres of land throughout Central Nevada, parts of Idaho, Utah and California. The U.S. claims the land to be “public” land and has been conducting military style seizures and ongoing surveillance of both Shoshone and non-Indian ranchers. The Western Shoshone have been engaged in a decades long dispute asserting their rights to the land base under the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley and their ancestral connections to the land which they continue to use and occupy. The land base, sacred to the Western Shoshone, is also the third largest gold producing area in the world and temporary home to nomadic multinational mining interests including Barrick, Newmont, Placer Dome and Kennecott. The seizures of Western Shoshone animals began occurring just six months after Interior officials, Stephen Griles and William Myers – both closely tied to mining interests – met to discuss the Western Shoshone “situation”.

Upon news of the guilty pleas, Western Shoshone grandmother Carrie Dann stated: “It’s about time. But also, there are still doubts in my mind as to the working of the BLM and the State of Nevada with this kind of person. He represented to us his close relationship with both government units and his prior dealings with them in what he claimed as a wild horse sanctuary. It’s good that he admitted to the wrongdoing, now it’s time the U.S. admit to its own wrongdoing with regard to its treatment of the Western Shoshone Nation, its people and all living things on this land. The horses were doing just fine out here living free on the range, they would have never been in this bad situation in the first place if the United States government had acted honorably and in compliance with its own laws.”

Despite the recent passage of a forced legislative measure claiming to payoff the Western Shoshone for a portion of the land base, the Nation maintains its firm position on the title issue. “The federal government cannot unilaterally sell out a Nation’s homeland. We are still here and we will continue to assert our rights by way of our ancestors and under the Treaty of Ruby Valley. Our connection with the land was given to us by the Creator, not the U.S. – the U.S. cannot take what it did not give. We will use our rights to protect the land. Our title is still intact – we repeat: Western Shoshone Land is Not For Sale.” Stated Raymond Yowell, Chief of the Western Shoshone National Council.

Introducing a new report from Foreign Policy In Focus

New FPIF Task Force Report on Terrorism

A Secure America in a Secure World

This 56-page report posits that the open-ended global war on terror is counterproductive, making U.S. citizens more vulnerable to terrorist attacks at home and abroad. It offers an alternative approach that would focus on preventing successful terrorist attacks by improving homeland security, bringing terrorists to justice and addressing terrorism’s root causes.

“The Bush administration's go-it-alone foreign policy has weakened the very organizations and alliances necessary for an effective global effort to combat terrorism, and the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations don't go far enough” says John Gershman, FPIF co-director and principal author. “The U.S. shouldn't fight a war on terrorism. Instead, the nation should tackle this threat through a strong, coordinated strategy that emphasizes civilian operations, improved homeland security, and international cooperation.”

A task force of 23 experts, including former government officials who served in the Reagan and Clinton administrations, and a relative of a 9/11 victim, have endorsed the report.

Judge Orders Release of N.Y. Protesters

by SARA KUGLER

.c The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - A judge ordered the immediate release of nearly 500 protesters. Thursday, just hours before President Bush was to speak at the Republican National Convention.

State Supreme Court Justice John Cataldo ordered 470 protesters freed, including some who had been awaiting arraignment for almost three days.

"These people have already been the victims of a process,'' the judge told the city's top lawyer. "I can no longer accept your statement that you are trying to comply.''

The city had blamed the sheer volume of detainees for the backlog in getting them released. More than 1,700 protesters have been arrested during the convention and the preceding few days - nearly 1,200 of them on Tuesday during a long-planned day of mass civil disobedience.

The judge's order came less than six hours before Bush was to accept his party's nomination for a second term in a speech at Madison Square Garden. Police are expecting potential protests coinciding with the speech.

State Trust Land Forests Threatened by Increased Logging

#110 WILD NORTHWEST, September 2, 2004
A Message from Northwest Ecosystem Alliance

Keeping the Northwest Wild

State Trust Land Forests Threatened by Increased Logging

Tell the Board of Natural Resources to vote FOR healthy forests and AGAINST the Preferred Alternative

State Lands Commissioner Doug Sutherland and the Board of Natural Resources seem intent on upping logging on state trust lands. The Sustainable Harvest Plan they approve on September 7 will determine the trust lands logging levels for westside Washington for the next ten years. Their Preferred Alternative increases the cut by 38 percent, mostly using clearcut logging.

According to the state's own Final Environmental Impact Statement, the Preferred Alternative will have relatively high impacts on wildlife, old growth, and water quality. The ten-year plan means fewer large trees, clearcuts in watersheds and near wetlands, and polluted streams with warmer water temperatures. It spells less old growth, degraded wildlife habitat, and higher risks of landslides.

Send a message! If you haven't already sent a message, please urge Commissioner Sutherland and the BNR to vote FOR the public interest and vote AGAINST the Preferred Alternative. To send an email, go to
http://www.ecosystem.org/action/index.html?MessageTemplateID=3

Attend September 7. The vote takes place at Department of Natural Resources offices in Olympia on Tuesday, September 7, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Your presence would be particularly powerful! Find out more.

Background. Last March, NWEA and many others provided comments on the Draft EIS on Alternatives for Sustainable Forest Management of State Trust Lands in Washington.

Thanks so much for taking action in response to our WildNW alerts. And thank you for speaking up yet once again to protect state trust land forests.

Misunderstanding terrorism

AntiWar.Com

You can undermine groups that practice terrorism in various ways and you can cut the ground from under them by eliminating some of their grievances. You might even be able to marginalize them so much that terrorist acts become routinely counterproductive. But eliminating terrorism from the world is most unlikely. Simple honesty would seem to require acknowledging this. Simple honesty, however, is apparently seldom what practitioners of politics see as a winning strategy...

In some countries, the commander in chief builds a propaganda apparatus that equates him with the military and the nation. If you object that he's making bad decisions and disserving the national interest, you're accused of weakening the nation, undermining its security, sabotaging the commander in chief, and serving a foreign power -- the very charges Miller leveled tonight against Bush's critics. Are you prepared to become one of those countries?

Her mit den Handy-Studien

Her mit den Handy-Studien!

Roland Kissling 3|9|2004

http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/deutsche_meisterschaft_im_handy_weitwurf.pdf

Weitere Demonstration gegen Mobilfunk-Sender in Steinfeld

STEINFELD.

Straight Talk

TAKE BACK AMERICA CAMPAIGN

America's Future | http://www.ourfuture.org

In watching the Republican National Convention these past few days, I've realized, more clearly than ever, why the right wing's days are numbered. The show on the stage doesn't match the reality behind the curtain.

They know their actual policies are not popular, so their rhetoric is remarkably divorced from reality. They talk "opportunity," but practice tax cuts for the few and pay cuts for the many. They parade "compassion," even while our country suffers a record increase in poverty. They invoke "security" even as their catastrophic war of choice in Iraq has made America less safe.

You've probably had similar thoughts. And, like me, I bet you'd like to cut through the misleading rhetoric and help tell what's really happening in America today. You'd also probably like to see a convincing case laid out against the right wing on all of the issues that Americans care most about. Well, that's exactly why we've created Straight Talk:

http://action.ourfuture.org/ctt.asp?u=1742757&l=53141

Straight Talk is a rhetoric-busting issue guide. It cuts through the rhetoric of the right, lays out a progressive alternative, and provides tips on how to argue the case. It's also interactive -- a living document that you can help shape. Please come to contribute your own facts, stories and insights and help build a resource that will arm activists and politicians to challenge the right:

http://action.ourfuture.org/ctt.asp?u=1742757&l=53141

Tonight, President Bush, will accept his party's nomination -- and the gulf between rhetoric and reality will yawn greater than ever. So today -- and in the days and months ahead -- I encourage you to visit Straight Talk and tell the story of what's really happening in George Bush's America.

Americans are looking for change. Progressive ideas are strong and popular, and over the past months we've built new energy and sophistication in the movement to take back America. Together, we will transform this country.

The right wing knows the only way it can survive is to hide its agenda and its record from the American people. That's why this country needs some Straight Talk -- to expose the failure of the right, and show that there is a better alternative. Join us in building our case, and mastering the arguments and ideas needed to move this country into a new era of progressive reform.
