Krank durchs Handy? - Handystrahlung reizt Teile der Hirnrinde

27.06.2006 16:37 Uhr

Are cell phones addictive?

The weblog version of this message is at:
http://www.emfacts.com/weblog/index.php?p=502

Following is a message from Sarah Dacre in the UK commenting on the last message “Cell phone signals excite brain”:

Hi Don,

Just briefly, and as an ES UK based person attempting to get my life back together after being struck down last year with ME caused by EMFs.

I am part of HESE-UK and paying close attention to the developments in research and feedback about EMFs.

When I had to give up my mobile phone last year, in addition to being truly sick, I also had to put myself through cold turkey from being addicted to my phone.

It took about 6 months to get over the tug of needing to use my phone, I had a warm feeling above my ear all the time even though I had given up my mobile and I noticed a sickly taste dripping down my throat on the side I had used my phone. My eye sight was also worsened on the right side and this has since improved enough not to wear glasses. I was well and truly addicted and completely attached to making phone calls and would use the phone all day long.

I know that my brain chemicals have altered since going cold turkey and I sincerely hope and pray that I have escaped from anything worse than the symptoms described above. I am still fighting to recover from ME which gets worse whenever I have been exposed to radiation but at least I am up and about and can attend meetings albeit on a reduced basis.

I can see the addiction in people’s faces when I tell them my story and they cannot conceive how they would manage to cope without a phone - their mobile possibly ranks above their children and partner in what they count as basic necessity in their daily existence.

I am now working on getting a case book of ES together for raising public awareness and for getting articles published in the media. We have about a dozen in the UK in the past 3 months.

Kind regards

Sarah Dacre

Electronic Smog: Will Your Cell Phone & Other Electric Gadgets Give You Cancer?

The Curse of the Mobile Phone Age: Electronic Smog

By Geoffrey Lean, Environment Editor Independent (London), May 07, 2006

The curse of the mobile phone age: around your home there are countless gadgets whose electrical fields, scientists now warn, are linked to depression, miscarriage and cancer.

Invisible "smog", created by the electricity that powers our civilisation, is giving children cancer, causing miscarriages and suicides and making some people allergic to modern life, new scientific evidence reveals.

The evidence - which is being taken seriously by national and international bodies and authorities - suggests that almost everyone is being exposed to a new form of pollution with countless sources in daily use in every home.

Two official Department of Health reports on the smog are to be presented to ministers next month, and the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has recently held the first meeting of an expert group charged with developing advice to the public on the threat.

The UN's World Health Organisation (WHO) calls the electronic smog "one of the most common and fastest growing environmental influences" and stresses that it "takes seriously" concerns about the health effects. It adds that "everyone in the world" is exposed to it and that "levels will continue to increase as technology advances".

Wiring creates electrical fields, one component of the smog, even when nothing is turned on. And all electrical equipment - from TVs to toasters - give off another one, magnetic fields. The fields rapidly decrease with distance but appliances such as hair dryers and electric shavers, used close to the head, can give high exposures. Electric blankets and clock radios near to beds produce even higher doses because people are exposed to them for many hours while sleeping.

Radio frequency fields - yet another component - are emitted by microwave ovens, TV and radio transmitters, mobile phone masts and phones themselves, also used close to the head.

The WHO says that the smog could interfere with the tiny natural electrical currents that help to drive the human body. Nerves relay signals by transmitting electric impulses, for example, while the use of electrocardiograms testify to the electrical activity of the heart.

Campaigners have long been worried about exposure to fields from lines carried by electric pylons but, until recently, their concerns were dismissed, even ridiculed, by the authorities.

But last year a study by the official National Radiological Protection Board concluded that children living close to the lines are more likely to get leukaemia, and ministers are considering whether to stop any more homes being built near them. The discovery is causing a large-scale reappraisal of the hazards of the smog.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer - part of the WHO and the leading international organisation on the disease - classes the smog as a "possible human carcinogen". And Professor David Carpenter, dean of the School of Public Health at the State University of New York, told The Independent on Sunday last week that it was likely to cause up to 30 per cent of all childhood cancers. A report by the California Health Department concludes that it is also likely to cause adult leukaemia, brain cancers and possibly breast cancer and could be responsible for a 10th of all miscarriages.

Professor Denis Henshaw, professor of human radiation effects at Bristol University, says that "a huge and substantive body of evidence indicates a range of adverse health effects". He estimates that the smog causes some 9,000 cases of depression.

Perhaps strangest of all, there is increasing evidence that the smog causes some people to become allergic to electricity, leading to nausea, pain, dizziness, depression and difficulties in sleeping and concentrating when they use electrical appliances or go near mobile phone masts. Some are so badly affected that they have to change their lifestyles.

While not yet certain how it is caused, both the WHO and the HPA accept that the condition exists, and the UN body estimates that up to three in every 100 people are affected by it.

Case History: 'I felt I was going into meltdown'

Until a year ago, Sarah Dacre reckoned she had a "blessed life". Running her own company, and living in an expensive north London home, the high-earning divorcee described herself as "fab, fit and 40s". Then suddenly the sight in her right eye failed: she first noticed it when she was unable to read an A-Z map. Soon she was getting pains and numbness in her joints. She could not sleep and spent nights "pacing about like a caged lion". Her short-term memory failed and if she took notes to remind her, she would forget she had made them.

The symptoms got worse whenever she was exposed to electricity. She could not use a computer for more than five minutes without becoming nauseous. Even using a telephone landline gave her a buzzing in the ear and made her feel she was "going into meltdown".

Kristen Stinar K.S.T.P. - TV news
St Paul, Minn.

Dear Kristin,

I came across your name and your involvement with cancer while trying to learn more about an ABC News story entitled More Than Quarter of Staff at Wisconsin School have Cancer, dated May 12, 2006. I hope that your cancer has been terminated and that you are well. I am also a survivor, from prostate cancer. My concern at this time is for the cancer victims at the West Elementary School.

There is a great deal of credible research from countries around the world that shows that electro magnetic radiation is causing cancer and many other serious illnesses. For the last two years, I have spent much of my time collecting research and information about EMR, as I believe that it was the cause of my cancer.

I am now electro sensitive and have not been able to live in our home for the last eighteen months because of the effects of ground current electricity. Electro magnetic radiation may also have been the source of your cancer. I know of several TV reporters in the Toronto area that have developed cancer. Their work environments are undoubtedly filled with electro magnetic radiation from the equipment used in modern broadcasting.

The amount of EMR in our lives has increased dramatically in the last few years and at such a pace that we are all becoming endangered by it. There are many sources of electro magnetic radiation, including cell phones and cell phone towers, power lines, transformers, ground current electricity, electrical appliances, electrical wiring, etc. I have attached a document above entitled Electrical Pollution and Our Schools, which will provide you with a good basic understanding of some of the dangers of electrical pollution. You will also find the document 1997 - A curious year in Sweden very interesting.

I am hoping that you will take a special interest in the West Elementary school cancer cluster and ask school, government and state health officials more detailed questions about their investigation and whether electro magnetic radiation has been investigated as a cause of the cancer. Some of the questions that you may wish to consider are: Is there a cell phone mast or tower located close to the school? What are the measurable levels of cell phone radiation at the school? Was a gauss meter used to check the school for electro magnetic fields? (anything above 2 milligauss should be cause for concern) Were measurements taken of electrical fields inside the school? Has the school been measured for dirty electricity? (this should be done with all school equipment running) Are there power lines or transformers which affect the school property? Is there a Wi Fi system installed at the school? Is there ground current electricity affecting the school? If so, what power is it and what frequencies does the electricity contain? Were the homes of the cancer victims checked for the same dangers? If you are eventually provided with measurements, please be aware that government standards are so lax that they do not protect the population.

Another wider ranging but very relevant question, is whether the other cancer cluster locations that were mentioned by state health officials in the same story, were evaluated for electro magnetic radiation?

I can provide you with a great deal of research that details the dangers of EMR and electrical pollution. I also know of several experts 'in the field of EMR' who would be pleased to provide information and generally assist you with any potential news stories. I appreciate that you are already very involved in cancer charity work but I encourage you to be more involved in cancer prevention. In my opinion, one of the best ways that you can accomplish that is to make many other people aware of the potential dangers of EMR. With the right information, people can make changes, use avoidance techniques and make improvements in their environment. You should be specially concerned about your own environment. If EMR levels at your home and at work, are unsafe, you may develop cancer again.

Yours sincerely,

Martin Weatherall

Review of ICNIRP EMF exposure guidelines

http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/review_of_icnirp_emf_exposure_guidelines.htm

--------

I sent the following email on June 28, 2006

Martin Blank

To: Mrs. Gunde Ziegelberger (ICNIRP)
Re: June 27 e-mail of Mr Hans Karow on ICNIRP EMF exposure guidelines

I am writing in support of Mr Hans Karow’s request regarding information about ICNIRP EMF exposure guidelines. Since these guidelines are meant to reflect the latest and best available information regarding the biological effects of EMF exposure, I think ICNIRP should be made aware of scientific developments reported and discussed at the annual meeting of the Bioelectromagnetics Society, held in Cancun earlier this month. A symposium, entitled ‘Scientific Perspective on Electromagnetic Fields and the Precautionary Principle’, was devoted to the scientific basis of EMF safety standards. The formal discussion on the scientific issues went on long past the designated closing time, and was continued in a special discussion session on the following day. To insure that the scientific issues continue to be explored and eventually resolved, the issues were referred by the President to the Public Affairs Committee of the Society, and instructed to meet regularly. A major point of discussion was based on the distinction between epidemiology studies that provide information about the probability of risk and laboratory research that provides scientifically verifiable information.

The latest laboratory research points to serious inadequacies in the safety standards recommended by ICNIRP and IEEE committees. In particular, stimulation of the stress response by ELF and RF frequencies indicates:

• EM fields probably cause molecular (e.g., DNA) damage in both frequency ranges.

• protective biological processes are activated in cells by non-thermal mechanisms.

• the same cellular processes are evoked by many parts of the EM spectrum.

The measured ELF thresholds to EM fields are low, both in terms of field strength and exposure duration, and there is great variability in the sensitivity of biological systems. We know that physiological systems have many protective mechanisms (e.g., homeostasis, repair mechanisms, apoptosis) that tend to mitigate the potentially harmful effects of the EM fields, but cannot always cope. Because of the wide range of biological systems affected, the wide range of frequencies that are biologically active, the low response thresholds and the possibility of cumulative effects by repetitive stimulation, the exposure standards should be revised to take into account:

• the importance of non-thermal mechanisms in assessing risk.

• total cumulative exposure across the different divisions of the EM spectrum.

• the increasing EM field background due to proliferation of electronic devices.

• the most sensitive populations (usually children).

I trust that you will bring this letter to the attention of ICNIRP, since I believe that ICNIRP would want to base its recommendations on all available information. I also hope that you will act favorably on Mr Karow’s request for information.

Sincerely yours,

Martin Blank,
