Yesterday's guilty plea by the B.C. Ministry of Forests to charges of damaging fish habitat represents only one violation among potentially hundreds in an out-of-control industry, says the David Suzuki Foundation. "This prosecution should be the first of many by Fisheries and Oceans Canada," says Bill Wareham, acting director of marine conservation with the David Suzuki Foundation. "Destructive logging and disregard for fish habitat continues to be the norm throughout B.C., and DFO must continue to hold the province accountable."

Documents approved logging of more than 54,000 hectares of old-growth forest caribou habitat in BC. Mountain caribou are completely dependent on large tracts of intact old-growth forest in southeast BC and parts of three US states for their survival. The BC, Canadian, and US governments consider mountain caribou to be in danger of extinction. The number of mountain caribou has fallen from 2,400 in 1997 to 1,670 today.

Waldschutz: Deutscher Papiergroßhandel ist mitverantwortlich für Umweltzerstörung (23.06.05)

Dem deutschen Papiergroßhandel fehlt es an Umweltbewusstsein und Transparenz. Das ergab eine Markt-Studie, die ROBIN WOOD am Donnerstag veröffentlicht hat. Demnach trifft der Papiergroßhandel bislang nur unzureichende Vorkehrungen, Papier aus Raubbau aus seinem Sortiment auszuschließen. Ökologische und soziale Kriterien spielen in der Praxis kaum eine Rolle. Recyclingpapier und FSC-zertifiziertes Frischfaserpapier wird nur in geringen Mengen angeboten. ROBIN WOOD fordert, dass der Recyclingpapier-Anteil drastisch erhöht wird und der übrige Bedarf mit Papier aus nachweislich ökologisch und sozial verantwortlicher Forstwirtschaft gedeckt wird.

Seltene Lebensräume: Massive Holzeinschläge in Hessens Wäldern empören Naturschützer (20.06.05)

Der Naturschutzbund NABU wirft dem Land Hessen rücksichtslose Fällungen in Schutzgebieten vor. Die Sägen machten auch vor über 140 Jahren alten Bäumen nicht Halt. Die Lebensräume von Tieren, die auf solche alten Baumbestände angewiesen sind, gingen massiv zurück. Die Naturschützer warnten vor einer Zerstörung der Naturschätze, für die das Land eine Erhaltungsverpflichtung eingegangen sei. So sei im Biosphärenreservat Rhön etwa ein geeigneter Horstbaum eines Schwarzstorches gefällt worden, obwohl dieser Teil der Rhön extra als EU-Vogelschutzgebiet zum Schutz des Schwarzstorches ausgewiesen worden sei. Im Lorscher Wald an der Bergstraße sei trotz Fällverbot ein alter Baum mit brütenden Schwarzspechten gefällt worden. Am Boden hätten sich drei der Jungvögel gefunden, die den Umsturz überlebt hatten. Der Stammabschnitt mit der Höhle sei zersägt und zerhackt worden, um die Spuren zu verwischen. Der Naturschutzbund forderte vom Land Hessen einen sofortigen Stopp der Einschläge in Altholzbeständen bis zur eindeutigen Klärung der Erhaltungsziele. Außerdem müsse der Umweltminister rasch die Einschlagzahlen von 2004 offenlegen.

The Great Bear Rainforest is tucked amongst majestic mountain fjords creating a cool, misty world of soaring eagles, towering cedar trees, grizzly bears and the globally unique Spirit Bear. Despite being the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest left on Earth it remains unprotected. Over the last decade, blockades and marketplace actions brought world attention to this region, but a solution, agreed to by industry, environmental groups, communities and workers, does exist. Now is the time for the Government of British Columbia to protect one third of the region from logging and create a new approach to forest management.

Tell the Premier of British Columbia to seize this moment in time for the future of the Great Bear Rainforest.
