Umweltschutz durch Verbraucher: Papierindustrie soll Menschenrechte achten und Urwälder schützen (10.06.05)

Ein Bündnis namhafter Umwelt- und Verbraucherorganisationen hat sich am Freitag, 10.06.05, mit einem gemeinsamen Aufruf an die Mitglieder des Verbandes Deutscher Papierfabriken sowie des Bundesverbandes des Deutschen Papiergroßhandels gewandt. In dem Aufruf fordern sie Papierhandel und -industrie auf, ausschließlich Zellstoff zu verwenden, der aus einer ökologisch nachhaltigen und sozial gerechten Waldwirtschaft stammt. Außerdem sollen Papierindustrie und -handel mehr Altpapier einsetzen. Die Präsentation des Aufrufs begleiten ROBIN WOOD-Aktivisten am Hamburger Fischmarkt mit einer Aktion gegen Papierverschwendung und Papier aus Raubbau.

"Kritischer Papierbericht 2005": Bericht zeigt Alternativen zur zerstörerischen Papierherstellung auf (08.06.05)

Papier ist ein selbstverständliches Alltagsprodukt, und die meisten Menschen verbrauchen immer mehr davon, ohne sich über die Folgen Gedanken zu machen. Diesen Gedanken nahm sich der am Mittwoch veröffentlichte Kritische Papierbericht 2005 zur Grundlage. Er beschäftigt sich mit den ökologischen und sozialen Folgen von Papierproduktion und -konsum. Dabei kommt er zu der Einschätzung, dass die Produktion von Papier alles andere als unproblematisch sei. Selbst in Zeiten verhaltener Konjunktur bleibe der Papiermarkt ein Wachstumsbereich. Denn um die Papierproduktion weiter steigern zu können, setze die Industrie zunehmend auf Holz aus rasch nachwachsenden Plantagen. Dieser Trend habe dramatische Folgen. In den ärmeren Ländern des Südens würden Wälder und Ackerland im Einzugsbereich großer Zellstoff-Fabriken in öde Monokulturen umgewandelt. Indigene Völker und Kleinbauern verlören ihr Land und verarmten. Die auf den Plantagen eingesetzten Pestizide belasteten Böden und Gewässer.

As of now, 20 Roadblock EF!ers have been arrested outside of the state capitol building in Indianapolis, IN. The charges may be disorderly conduct, but there may be more serious charges because of the whole Roadless Summer program and the fact that the demonstration was on state property. Police surrounded and attacked a demonstration protesting the plan to build the I69 superhighway. Demonstrators were stunned with tazors, pepper-sprayed (resulting in a severe asthma attack for one young woman demonstrator)and wrestled to the ground, resulting in injuries. As of now, the demonstrators are being held, handcuffed back to back, patted down and their personal effects have been removed, but they remain on the ground in front of the capitol. They have not been moved to the jail, as of yet. Local sources are saying that they will not be released until Monday, because of the political nature of the arrest.

Campaign update

A few weeks ago, we sent you an email asking you to take action by emailing the Board of Directors of Kimberly-Clark. We told you that our goal was to have 5000 people email the Board by the end of the first week. Well, more than 5500 people took action in that first week, and almost 2000 more have done so since – that’s a total of 7500 emails flooding the inboxes of the K-C board. Plus, so many of you helped spread the word to family and friends that over 1250 new people have joined this list since we last emailed you. Great work!

Meanwhile, Richard was in Texas confronting Kimberly-Clark’s Board and execs face to face.
