Senior scientific advisers to the World Health Organisation (WHO) have recommended the creation of a genetically modified version of the smallpox virus to counter any threat of a bioterrorist attack.

Permitting researchers to engineer the genes of one of the most dangerous infections known to man would make it easier to develop new drugs against smallpox, the scientists said. But the man who led the successful global vaccination campaign to eradicate smallpox from the wild said he opposed the move on the grounds that the scientific benefits were not worth the risks to public health.

Professor Donald Henderson, of the Centre for Biosecurity at the University of Pittsburgh, said he feared that tinkering with the genetic makeup of the variola virus - which causes smallpox - might accidentally produce a more lethal form of the disease.

It is important when emailing the Director-General of WHO, that we be diplomatic - to get our point across without being rude. I have attached a sample email (the one I sent to test the email addy). Feel free to copy and paste this - with your own signature. The more emails he receives, the better. He needs to know that we are paying attention and that we no longer will stand by as "guinea pigs" and allow viruses to be transported and modified without OUR consent - since is US that were the 300 million + who were killed the first go 'round with this virus, IMO.

Mr. Simpson and Ms. McNab are the PR people for WHO. It wouldn't hurt to email them as well.

I urge you NOT to open this potential Pandora's Box; modifying this deadly virus is not guaranteed to be a beneficial solution to bioterrorism.

Um unsere gemeinsamen und berechtigten Ansprüche auf eine gesunde Umwelt unterstreichen zu können, hat die Bürgerinitiative "Das Leben befreien" beschlossen, einen eigenen Fragebogen zur Belastung durch Sendemasten bzw. Mikrowellenherden zu entwickeln. Sie finden diesen Fragebogen (dreiseitig) mit einem Anschreiben (einseitig) im Anhang dieser e-mail.

Unsere Idee ist, Sie zu bitten, von diesem Fragebogen nebst Anschreiben Ausdrucke bzw. Kopien in etwas größerer Anzahl zu machen. Diese sollten gezielt in Briefkästen von (Hoch-)Häusern geworfen werden, auf denen ein Handy-Sendemast installiert wurde bzw. die in der Nähe von solchen Sendemasten stehen.

Diese Aktion könnten Sie z. B. in Ihrer unmittelbaren oder auch weiteren Nachbarschaft starten. Eine weitere Möglichkeit ist, immer einen kleinen Stapel dieses Erhebungsbogens im Auto mitzuführen. Sollten Sie unterwegs auf ein "bestücktes" Hochhaus o. ä. aufmerksam werden und ein wenig Zeit erübrigen können, so wäre es ein Gedanke, daß Sie einen kurzen Zwischenstop einlegen, um dieses Haus durch persönlichen Einwurf mit diesen Erhebungsbögen zu bestücken.

Es ist hierbei unwesentlich, wo genau Sie sich befinden. Es ist für die Stichhaltigkeit unserer Erhebung sogar von großer Bedeutung, daß der Rücklauf dieser Auskünfte geographisch möglichst weit gestreut ist.

Wir sind uns darüber im klaren, daß dies ein wenig Arbeit, Umstände und (minimale) Kosten - also Unbequemlichkeit - für Sie nach sich ziehen könnte. Daher kann diese Aktion nur gelingen, wenn Sie freiwillig bereit sind, diese Unbequemlichkeit auf sich zu nehmen. Wir bitten Sie auch um Verständnis, daß wir die Kosten für Ihren Einsatz nicht erstatten können. Da wir aber sicher sind, daß Sie ein höheres Bewußtsein für Umwelt und Gesundheit entwickelt haben als viele andere unserer Mitmenschen, hoffen wir zuversichtlich darauf, daß sich unter unseren Adressaten/innen und auch Ihrem Verteilerkreis einige Freiwillige finden werden, die bereit sind, dieses Opfer zu bringen.

wir stellen uns Ihnen vor als eine Bürgerinitiative, die es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht hat, über den Unterschied zwischen lebensfeindlicher und lebensfördernder Technologie aufzuklären. Sie finden unsere interessante Website mit vielen Erklärungen und Details unter www.daslebenbefreien.de.

Zu den lebensfeindlichen Technologien unserer Zeit gehören unter anderem vor allem der wechselstrombasierte Mobilfunk und die Mikrowellentechnik. Politik und Industrie leugnen mit allen Mitteln deren Gefährlichkeit (schriftliche Beweise liegen uns aufgrund eigener Korrespondenz in ausreichender Zahl vor) – zum einen, um nicht ein Milliardengeschäft zu gefährden, zum anderen, um die Möglichkeiten zur Überwachung der Bürger, die in dieser Technik vorhanden sind, nicht aus der Hand zu geben.

Wir möchten Sie freundlichst um Ihre freiwillige Mitarbeit bitten, eventuelle durch Mikrowellenstrahlung aufgetretene Gesundheitsschäden in dieser Erhebung zu dokumentieren. Wir haben Ihr Wohnhaus ausgewählt, weil es mit Sendemasten bestückt ist bzw. in Ihrer unmittelbaren Nachbarschaft ein solches Haus steht. Der Industrie zufolge müßten Sie in einem „sicheren“ Raum leben, weil die Strahlung angeblich wie eine Pizza waagerecht vom Mast abstrahlt. Wir bezweifeln diese Behauptung erstens aufgrund der Tatsache, daß auch in „bestückten“ Häusern erhöhte Strahlungswerte festgestellt werden, und zweitens, weil die Natur ein Resonanzsystem ist und Ihr Wohnhaus durch die Schwingungen der Antenne direkt beeinträchtigt wird. Außerdem wäre dann in Ihrer Wohnung kein Empfang möglich.

Wir garantieren die streng vertrauliche Behandlung Ihrer Angaben. Eine evtl. Weitergabe der Beschreibung gesundheitlicher Schäden an die Verantwortlichen in Politik und Industrie erfolgt unter Wahrung Ihrer Anonymität. Wichtig ist allerdings, daß bei offiziellen Rückfragen die gesundheitlichen Beeinträchtigungen ärztlich dokumentiert werden können, d. h. rein subjektive Vermutungen genügen nicht.

Bitte nehmen Sie sich ein paar Minuten Zeit, um den beigefügten Fragebogen auszufüllen und an die angegebene Adresse zu senden. Damit geben Sie uns allen die Möglichkeit, mehr Einfluß auf die Politik auszuüben, die in der Verantwortung und Pflicht steht, Schaden von uns zu wenden.

COMMENTS NEEDED TO OPPOSE NEW FOREST PLANNING RULES

As an early Christmas present, the Bush administration released new rules for managing national forests. These new rules eliminate the most fundamental wildlife protections, open up millions of acres of national forests including old growth, roadless areas and sensitive wildlife habitat to harmful activities, disregards science and shuts the public out of meaningful input.

While the new rules eliminate many protections outright, there is still an opportunity to comment on the rule for adopting or changing forest management plans. Forest plans are the long-term "blue prints" that govern how public forests and grasslands are managed. These plans identify how much logging, oil and gas drilling, mining, road building, grazing and motorized recreation will take place and where.

Forest plans are analogous to a county general plan, which lays out what development will take place. After the long-term plan is approved, projects to carry out the plan are then implemented over time.

TAKE ACTION: COMMENTS NEEDED BY MARCH 7, 2005

The administration is accepting comments on only one portion of the new rules: it proposes to exempt forest management plans from environmental review and public input under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The rest of the rule changes are final as of January 5, 2005. The proposed rule would no longer require an analysis of the environmental impacts of a forest plan, revisions or amendments, including any analysis of alternatives that may be less impactful or public review of the proposed plans. Please send a letter urging the Bush administration to abandon its proposed rule change and make the following points:

[You/your group] strongly opposes the January 5, 2005 proposed rule change that would exempt forest management plans, revisions or amendments from environmental review and meaningful public input under the National Environmental Policy Act. The proposed new rule would:

Hide from the public adequate information to evaluate the environmental consequences of forest plans and disregards the best available science in favor of commercial interests;

Make it easier for timber, oil, gas, mining and motorized recreation corporations to profit from the use of public forests while eliminating the need for forest managers to assess potentially harmful impacts on water, wildlife, recreational use, old growth and roadless areas;

Worsen the assault on wildlife. Without environmental analysis of a forest plan or changes to a plan, the impacts to wildlife will not be understood. The new regulations have already abolished the requirements to maintain viable populations of species and to monitor those populations. Adopting this new proposal effectively removes all enforceable requirements to analyze and monitor wildlife health, both at the forest plan and at the project level; and

Call for environmental analysis to be done only at the project level. But the Bush administration has already exempted many types of logging projects from environmental review under NEPA mostly through the misnamed "Healthy Forest Initiative" in effect eliminating all environmental review and opportunity for public comment.

Additionally, the proposed rule would eliminate studying or disclosing the cumulative impact of management activities across the national forest, which is usually done at the planning stage.
