Movement to get women voters to vote
October, 2004
The women’s vote is critical to the election on November 2, 2004. If all women voted who were registered to vote, they could choose the next president of the United States.
I feel we need to create a movement to motivate women to vote. We need to convince women that their vote will influence a change in the direction of this country, most particularly around educational and economic concerns, including jobs and the rising cost of living.
Too many women throw away their vote. Less than half of women ages 18-34 voted in the 2000 presidential election and single women in particular have dismal turnout rates: More than 22 million of them who were eligible to vote in 2000 did not.
I am trying to create a local grassroots movement in San Luis Obispo County to encourage women to vote and inspire them to take action. A fun way to achieve this goal would be to get as many women as possible to wear “Be the change you want to see in the world- Vote on November 2nd” t- shirts every Tuesday until Election Day. They are a beautiful fuchsia color so we will really standout! When people see women wearing these t- shirts, it will create a buzz around town and a feeling of unity and purpose.
I am hoping you would be willing to be part of this movement and help get these t-shirts out to your friends and family. They are only $5.00 each (the cost of the shirt itself). I am also accepting donations so we can get community groups and college clubs involved in the distribution of the shirts at community events. My hope is simply that we will empower more women to get interested and involved in the upcoming election.
Please contact me if you want to get involved or make a donation. T- shirts can be purchased at: Pacific Energy Company; 2121 Santa Barbara St. in San Luis Obispo (544-4700). The shirts are available Tuesday thru Friday from 10am-5:30pm; please ask for Susan Mullen.
Thanks, in advance, for supporting such an important cause.
Sincerely,
Marcia Beckley Kane
