Voter Registration Deadline Quickly Approaching

The deadline to register to vote in Kentucky is just around the corner on Monday, October 4th.

Do YOU need to register to vote? If you've moved since the last time you've registered or if you've not voted in the last four years or so, you should register to vote again.

If you're a student who has moved away to college, note that you can register to vote at your campus address if you want to. This might make things easier for you as you're likely to be at your school on Election Day (Tuesday, November 2nd).

If you need to get a voter registration card online, visit
https://secure5.ctsg.com/rtv/OVR/index.asp
or
https://register.campaign.com/democracy/e4/nvra/?language=en&action=form&state=KY

You will still need to print these out and mail them to your County Clerk or to the State Board of Elections in order to get registered.

If you need to contact the County Clerk in the county that you're registered, you can find their contact information through the link below -

http://www.sos.state.ky.us/Elecfil/Genelectionfiles/countyclerk.asp

Your County Clerk can let you know whether you're registered at your current address, can tell you your voting location for Election Day, and is generally the best person to talk to about voting logistics.

This is an important election, so make sure that you're registered to vote and make sure that friends, family members, roommates, and anyone else you come in contact with is registered by the deadline (Monday, October 4th) and ready to speak their mind on Election
Day (Tuesday, November 2nd).

If it helps, pass this email along to people you know!

A Message from Northwest Ecosystem Alliance

Keeping the Northwest Wild

Smith Logging Rider Threatens Public Trust and Old-Growth Forests Sneaky legislative rider would prevent legal review of aggressive logging plans in southern Oregon

Your calls to Senator Murray, Senator Cantwell, and Representative Norm Dicks are needed to help avert an unnatural disaster. Each autumn, Congress develops appropriations bills that fund federal government programs and institutions. This year, Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) announced his plans to attach a legislative "rider" to one of the funding bills that would suspend environmental laws and prohibit judicial review of the Biscuit post-fire logging project on the Siskiyou National Forest -- one of the largest federal logging projects in modern history. The Smith rider is intended to subvert legal proceedings currently underway that may find illegal Forest Service plans to log inside old-growth reserves. The Smith rider has been broadly condemned by editorial boards across the Pacific Northwest.

In addition, Senator Smith may also attach a separate rider that would require the establishment of tree plantations on federal lands subject to fire, storms, and other natural occurrences. Tree plantations have repeatedly been shown to increase the spread of fire, disease, and pathogens.

Please call Senator Murray, Senator Cantwell, and Representative Norm Dicks by Friday, October 1. Ask for the legislative staff that works on forest issues. Tell them you support a "clean" appropriations bill that has no legislative riders attached. Let them know you oppose legislative riders that suspend environmental laws and prohibit normal judicial review, and that require inappropriate and harmful management of public forests across the nation.

Call:
Senator Maria Cantwell, 202-224-3441 or 206-220-6400
Senator Patty Murray, 202-224-2621 or 206-553-5545
Representative Norm Dicks, 202-225-5916 or 1-800-947-6676
Or use the Capitol Switchboard, 202-224-3124

You can also find your elected representatives at http://www.vote-smart.org/

Press has let the Country down

by Greg Mitchell

Editor and Publisher

09/27/04

On the eve of the Vote for Change tour, which has sparked controversy in newsrooms where reporters have been ordered not to attend the pro-Kerry fundraisers, Bruce Springsteen, one of the stars of the concerts, has a few words for the press. In a wide ranging interview in the just-published Oct. 14 issue of Rolling Stone, Springsteen says, 'The press has let the country down. It's taken a very amoral stand, in that essential issues are often portrayed as simply one side says this and the other side says that .... The job of the press is to tell the truth without fear or favor. We have to get back to that standard...

Back Door Draft

U.S. Rep. DeGette Urges Army Probe at Fort Carson

Young people are warned: The military draft isn't a myth, this is a reality. A "back door draft" is already here as soldiers are given a terrible choice: re-enlist or go back to the front lines. "We were offered about $10,000 (as a bonus) to re-enlist, but a lot of us said no, we didn't want to," said Wes Swanson, a specialist who was wounded during his first tour in Iraq [who recently returned to Fort Carson, Colorado]. "So they said if you don't re-enlist, we're going to PCS (transfer) you to another unit that's going to Iraq, and you're going to end up going to Iraq for another year whether you re-enlist or not."

Movement to get women voters to vote

October, 2004

The women’s vote is critical to the election on November 2, 2004. If all women voted who were registered to vote, they could choose the next president of the United States.

I feel we need to create a movement to motivate women to vote. We need to convince women that their vote will influence a change in the direction of this country, most particularly around educational and economic concerns, including jobs and the rising cost of living.

Too many women throw away their vote. Less than half of women ages 18-34 voted in the 2000 presidential election and single women in particular have dismal turnout rates: More than 22 million of them who were eligible to vote in 2000 did not.

I am trying to create a local grassroots movement in San Luis Obispo County to encourage women to vote and inspire them to take action. A fun way to achieve this goal would be to get as many women as possible to wear “Be the change you want to see in the world- Vote on November 2nd” t- shirts every Tuesday until Election Day. They are a beautiful fuchsia color so we will really standout! When people see women wearing these t- shirts, it will create a buzz around town and a feeling of unity and purpose.

I am hoping you would be willing to be part of this movement and help get these t-shirts out to your friends and family. They are only $5.00 each (the cost of the shirt itself). I am also accepting donations so we can get community groups and college clubs involved in the distribution of the shirts at community events. My hope is simply that we will empower more women to get interested and involved in the upcoming election.

Please contact me if you want to get involved or make a donation. T- shirts can be purchased at: Pacific Energy Company; 2121 Santa Barbara St. in San Luis Obispo (544-4700). The shirts are available Tuesday thru Friday from 10am-5:30pm; please ask for Susan Mullen.

Thanks, in advance, for supporting such an important cause.

Sincerely,

..."Editor's Note: February 28, 2004 Update: This article omits one fact that should have been included: the bill was drafted by former Judge Roy Moore's lawyer, Herb Titus. Those who have read The Despoiling of America will know that Titus was the first Dean of Pat Robertson's School of Public Policy and is a known Dominionist who has advocated the abolition of the government's licensing powers. He has argued that government oversteps when it licenses lawyers, doctors, teachers, etc. Also, an earlier bill titled "Religious Liberties Restoration Act," S. 1558 dated July 21, 2003, specifically authorizes the display of the ten commandments and other religious references and exempts such items from judicial review by the U.S. Federal Courts. Our question is: What is actually intended by the Constitution Restoration Act of 2004?]"...
