Orwell Rolls in His Grave
"Could a media system, controlled by a few global corporations with the ability to overwhelm all competing voices, be able to turn lies into truth?..."
Director Robert Kane Pappas’ "Orwell Rolls In His Grave" is the consummate critical examination of the Fourth Estate, once the bastion of American democracy. Asking whether America has entered an Orwellian world of doublespeak where outright lies can pass for the truth, Pappas explores what the media doesn’t like to talk about: itself.

“Orwell Rolls in His Grave”: Great Concept, Flawed Film
“Orwell Rolls in His Grave” is an interesting but uneven new semi-documentary film by Robert Kane Pappas that examines the relationship between the 5 or so big media companies that manufacture our info-tainment “news” and the political operatives in Washington DC. The film is in limited release. Mr. Pappas gets high marks for reminding the audience of “forgotten” stories from the 24/7 news cycle and how the media often manufactures series of unimportant stories on trivial matters, while missing or simply failing to report stories that editors and news directors deem “too difficult” or “too complex” for the general public. The tools and techniques of propaganda are examined alongside the relationships between the politicians who regulate the media, and who, at the same time, are beholden to the media in order to get their faces and sound bites before their constituents. Pappas makes stunning use of timelines and quotes, as well as historical and literary references to reveal just how superficial, manipulative and down-right wrong “news” reporting is on a regular basis.
While thought provoking and worth the price of admission, the film is flawed by Mr. Pappas’s limited interviews and sources. A legitimate, thorough, documentary on such a complex topic as the Orwellian manipulation of our news and political discourse cannot rest solely on the interview of just one congressman (among other journalists and academics) – particularly when that congressman is Bernie Sanders, the "Independent” (Socialist) from Vermont. Does Mr. Pappas wish us to believe that no other congressman were willing to go on camera and talk about this subject? Doesn’t Mr. Pappas have an obligation to interview (or even attempt to interview -- a la’ Michael Moore) a broader cast of congressional characters?

Director Robert Kane Pappas’ ORWELL ROLLS IN HIS GRAVE is the consummate critical examination of the Fourth Estate, once the bastion of American democracy. Asking whether America has entered an Orwellian world of doublespeak where outright lies can pass for the truth, Pappas explores what the media doesn’t like to talk about: itself. Meticulously tracing the process by which media has distorted and often dismissed actual news events, Pappas presents a riveting and eloquent mix of media professionals and leading intellectual voices on the media.
Among the cast of characters in ORWELL ROLLS IN HIS GRAVE are Charles Lewis, director of the Center for Public Integrity, Vincent Bugliosi, former L.A. prosecutor and legal scholar, film director and author Michael Moore, Rep. Bernie Sanders, Danny Schecter, author and former producer for ABC and CNN, and Tony Benn, former member of the British Parliament.
