Die flämischen Grünen fordern strengere Normen für Strahlenemissionen der Mobilfunk-Industrie. Groen will hierzu eine entsprechende Gesetzesinitiative im flämischen Parlament einbringen. Stein des Anstoßes ist der flächendeckende Ausbau des jüngsten Mobilfunknetzes UMTS. Hierzu werden in den Mehrfachnetzen in den kommenden Jahren alleine in Flandern vermutlich tausend neue Sendeanlagen gebaut werden müssen. Die Antennen der Basisstationen überdecken insbesondere dicht besiedelte Regionen feinmaschig bis hinunter zu wenigen Metern. Zwar gibt es keine wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse zu möglichen gesundheitsschädlichen Risiken durch Mobilfunkantennen und deren Strahlung.

Doch plädieren die flämischen Grünen für Vorsicht in diesem Bereich. Die Partei tritt für eine siebenmal strengere Strahlungsnorm für Mobilfunk-Antennen ein, wie die derzeit angewandten gesetzlichen Regelungen. Sollte diese Gesetzesinitiative umgesetzt werden, würden in Flandern die strengsten Strahlenemissionsnormen in ganz Europa Anwendung finden.

A unique conference was recently held in Stockholm in May, 2006.

The theme for the conference was "The right for persons with the impairment electrohypersensitivity to live in a fully accessible society". The conference was organized by the Stockholm City municipality and the Stockholm County Council and dealt with the most recent measures to make Stockholm fully accessible for persons with the impairment electrohypersensitivity. Among such measures are to offer home equipment adjustments, ban mobile phones from certain underground cars as well as certain public bus seats, and through electrosanitized hospital wards.

The conference was documented on film. It has now been translated into English and made available on a double-DVD. It is sold and distributed by the Stockholm City. The prize (incl. postage) is 25 euro. An invoice will be sent out after you have received the DVD.

I have had two personal stories sent to me which are horrendously moving. In both cases the people cannot think straight, recall things, or avoid mental confusion. One is only in partial notes and I will have to build it up with many conversations.

Both parties sent them to me with health survey forms to try to help other sufferers come to terms with it, &/or to raise awareness. Has anyone any idea where I can place these for greatest effect, and others that might come, please? No, I cannot send them to Sarah Dacre because neither will give consent. These people find it hard to trust and they know me.

I write this with great difficulty, unable like many people to concentrate. The weather is not good enough for me to sit outside, so I am sitting here with the usual, ever present, ‘hum’ and high pitched signals going through my head trying to make some sense of it all. (I’m losing it already!)

So I had a sleepless week on holiday, too tired to be up and about sight-seeing during the day. So another ruined episode in our lives, but we carry on, as we must.

I hope my writing this down will give some insight for other sufferers and perhaps help in guiding them through it all.

Chain of the People of Good Will. Protest Information from Kamionki, Daszewice, Borowiec, Skrzynki, Moscienica.

The inhabitants of Kamionki, Daszewice, Skrzynki, Moscienica and Borowiec near Poznan protesting against the construction in the vicinity of their homes of the great, over 70 meters high, 2x400 kV + 2x220 kV powerline. Besides its high, the line will also be well seen its colours (white-red patches) and blinking lights at night.

According to various investor propositions, the line will be set up in 30 - 300 meters from the homes, or will encircle the village at three sides. Some of the inhabitants will have the line towers seen from all their windows. In Daszewice the inhabitants are protesting for 7 years. The inhabitants of Kamionki and Borowiec have shown an alternative proposition undergrund cable or line in forest 800 m from homes. But the investor waiting for the authorisation to begin the works, not willing to discuss the proposition of the inhabitants. We are protesting for 16 months already. In that time the protesters have sent many complaints and organised many meetings with local authorities, have discovered formal errors in Spacial Management Plan, have disclosed a crime (forgery of city council motion). Even local tv station broadcasted on the problem, and local newspapers published several articles. Unfortunately, the starosta authorised the start of construction works.

The protest goes on. At this time hundreds of people all over the country are sending the protest letters to President, Prime Minister and to local government.

Many other people will also join the protest. We will establish the Chain of the People of Good Will. The local prosecutor is investigating the case of document forgery.

As the date of formal aceptance of the plan is approaching, the protest will be escalated. Some inhabitants will begin hunger strike. Unfortunately many of them are vulnerable.

Die Hamburger haben Angst vor ihren Handys. 82 Prozent fürchten sich nach einer Emnid-Umfrage vor schädlichem Elektro-Smog der Mobiltelefone - bundesweit sind es "nur" 55 Prozent. Sorgen sich die Hamburger zu Recht? Studien zeigen, dass Handy-Strahlung Zellen verändert. Neueste Erkenntnis: Weil die kleinen Begleiter Mikrowellen erzeugen, wirds im Gehirn knalleheiß: Sogar 10000 Grad können entstehen!

Die Kosten sinken, Flatrates breiten sich aus. Immer mehr Menschen nutzen das Handy als Ersatz fürs Festnetz. Statistisch gesehen hat jeder Deutsche ein Handy. Doch die Telefone senden elektromagnetische Strahlen aus. Und noch ist unklar, wie gefährlich das ist. Am Max-Planck-Institut für Kolloid- und Grenzflächenforschung wurde gerade Beunruhigendes festgestellt. "Jeder weiß, dass in der Mikrowelle einiges in Sekunden und anderes nur langsam heiß wird", so Direktor Markus Antonietti. "Dummerweise erhitzen sich bestimmte Stellen im Gehirn sehr schnell."

Richtlinien geben vor, dass die Erwärmung von Körperteilen beim Telefonieren ein Grad nicht überschreiten darf. Doch in der Realität kann nur die mittlere Temperatur gemessen werden. Die Forscher um Antonietti bestrahlten deshalb eine Art künstliches Gehirn, um genauere Temperaturdaten zu bekommen. Das schockierende Ergebnis: Wo der Testaufbau am ehesten Zellteilen im Gehirn ähnelte, gabs die stärksten Erhitzungen. "Wie viel genau, kann man nicht sagen. Aber einige Teile absorbieren hundert Mal mehr Energie als angenommen. Das kann für Sekundenbruchteile 10000 Grad und mehr erzeugen", so Antonietti. "Und die Energie aus Handys schüttelt die Moleküle so heftig durch, dass sogar Löcher in der Zellmembran entstehen."

Ob und wie gefährlich das ist, will Antonietti nicht sagen. Der Professor legt Wert darauf, dass er Handys nicht verteufelt. Schließlich nutzt er selbst eins. Nur eben so selten und kurz wie möglich. Und seine Kinder dürfen maximal fünf Minuten am Stück am Handy quasseln.

Das Ergebnis einer von der EU finanzierten internationalen Studie zu den Gefahren des Mobilfunks vor zwei Jahren ist noch erschreckender. Im Reagenzglas haben die Handystrahlen gentoxische Wirkungen gehabt - sie zerstörten Teile der DNA. "Sowas steht am Anfang jeder Krebserkrankung", so Projektkoordinator Franz Adlkofer. Und das bei Strahlen weit unter den Grenzwerten. Lange konnten die Resultate nicht wiederholt werden und wurden stark angefeindet. Doch eine indische Studie hat jetzt das gleiche Ergebnis geliefert - und zwar bei lebenden Menschen.

Warum die Schäden auftreten, bleibt unklar. "Auch ist das nicht der Beweis, dass Handys Krebs verursachen", so Adlkofer, der selbst nur mobil telefoniert, wenns wirklich nötig ist. "Aber es ist fahrlässig, so zu tun, als gäbe es kein Risiko. Wir brauchen mehr Forschung!" Denn die wird seiner Meinung nach sehr erfolgreich von der Mobilfunkindustrie in Verbindung mit Teilen der Politik torpediert.

Immer wieder berichten kritische Forscher, wie mit Drohungen und Rufschädigungen versucht wird, sie mundtot zu machen. Parallel rollt derzeit eine Werbewelle durchs Land, um Verbrauchern die UMTS-Technik nahezubringen. Dabei sei UMTS noch gefährlicher, sagt Adlkofer: "Wir alle befinden uns in einem gigantischen Freilandversuch mit ungewissem Ausgang!"

WIE SIE SICH SCHÜTZEN KÖNNEN

Beim Handykauf Wichtig ist der SAR-Wert. Er gibt an, wie stark das Handy strahlt. Gemessen wird in Watt pro Kilogramm. Die gesetzliche Obergrenze liegt bei 2,0 W/kg. Die im Artikel genannten Zellschäden traten aber bereits bei 0,3 W/kg auf. Zweites Kriterium ist das Abstrahlverhalten. Je besser es ist, desto weniger stark muss das Handy senden. Da beide Werte selten auf der Verpackung stehen - Verkäufer fragen! Bei der Handynutzung Das britische und dänische Gesundheitsministerium warnen davor, dass Kinder viel telefonieren. Für alle gilt Beim SMS-Senden das Handy vom Körper fernhalten. Nicht im Auto oder bei schlechtem Empfang telefonieren. Möglichst Head-Set benutzen. Nachts ausschalten. Andere Strahlenquellen W-Lan und schnurlose Telefone strahlen weniger als Handys. Beim Telefonkauf beachten, dass es nicht im Stand-by-Betrieb strahlt. Keine Stationen in Kinder- und Schlafzimmer stellen.

Pässe können Bombe auslösen

Die neuen mit einem Funkchip ausgestatteten Reisepässe sollten eigentlich das Reisen sicherer machen. Jetzt stellte sich heraus, dass das Dokument auch als Auslöser für Bomben zweckentfremdet werden kann.

In den USA wird derzeit mit der Ausgabe ähnlicher Pässe begonnen, die eigentlich Flugreisen sicherer machen sollten. Auch in Österreich sind die neuen Reisepässe mit integriertem Funkchip (RFID) bereits Standard. Auf dem Chip sind derzeit digitale Passfotos gespeichert, in Zukunft sollen noch Fingerabdrücke dazu kommen.

Es gab allerdings schon vor der Einführung des Systems Hinweise auf gravierende Sicherheitslücken: So ist es einer Firma bereits gelungen, die in den Pässen verwendeten RFID-Chips zu klonen - Terroristen könnten demnach mit dem Profil eines unbescholtenen Bürgers Kontrollen umgehen.

Doch das ist nicht alles: US-Sicherheitsexperten der Firma Flexilis bewiesen in einem Experiment, dass der US-RFID-Pass als Zünder für eine Bombe benutzt werden kann. Der Zünder kann so eingestellt werden, dass er nur auf bestimmte Nationalitäten reagiert. Da in die US-Pässe eine Sperre eingebaut ist, muss der Pass zur Auslösung aber leicht geöffnet werden.

Laut einer Flexilis-Demonstration, die auch als auf Youtube vorliegt, reicht also ein US-Reisepass, der in einer Tasche mit etwas Spielraum transportiert wird, als Bombenauslöser: Ein RFID-Lesegerät aktiviert dabei den Zünder, sobald ein Pass mit Funkchip in unmittelbarer Nähe vorbeigetragen wird. "Gezielte Angriffe auf US-Bürger" würden so ermöglicht, heißt es in dem Video.

Below is a brief exchange between two people, one an expert on this issue, the other a reporter re: the new WiMax systems about to be deployed in many U.S. cities, and the new DECT phones already here. It gives a good explanation of the difference between WiFi and WiMax, why we should be concerned, and why the new cordless domestic DECT phones should be avoided. At the end I have inserted a link to a news story re: this new deployment by Sprint-Nextel. There are other stories referenced too. What this means is that any existing cell tower or antenna array can be adapted to this use. Behind the curtain on this is the FCC’s recent licensing of these bands without an environmental review, with obsolete RF exposure standards in place, and the very real likelihood that when the standards are reviewed in the near future, they will become MORE lenient, especially in this bands, specifically to accommodate these new technologies. All the while, there is no government research into the biological effects to humans, much less other species. The industry continues to control the show as well as our federal regulators and the legislature. There is a recent thrust by the CTIA (Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association) to further undermine what little control communities retain under the Telecom Act to site this infrastructure. They are enticing individual legislators at the state level to propose Trojan Horse-type legislation that would override any restrictions on cell towers in residential neighborhoods. And there are clauses inserted in bills at the federal level that have nothing to do with this issue. What’s driving the new thrust is they are going after the cable networks. It’s not just about your cell phone anymore, or public safety, and maybe never was.

On another note, my editors are asking for larger-scale solutions to EMF and RF issues in addition to steps individuals can take to minimize their exposure. Do you know of communities, or organizations such as schools that have successfully worked to mitigate exposure from cell towers? IE has anyone been successful in pushing for siting that minimizes public exposure? I know you mentioned the FCC law here that essentially silences communities. If not in the U.S. are there success stories from other countries? I’d welcome any leads. thanks again, K

If you want to highlight a real coming problem, look today at two articles in USA Today. The first is on page 2 of the business section titled “Sprint Nextel picks WiMax for new high-speed network”. The second is on page 6d titled “Nana Technology: Tools help seniors to be independent.” which includes an intelligent phone for seniors with dementia and computer programs that help cognition. WiMax is a wireless technology that produces a blanket of wireless RF over cities up to 10 miles (as compared to 300? for the average WI-FI installation). You can imagine the high RF exposures for those closest to the antennas. I don’t yet have good estimates of the RF power density for WiMax, but based on its “reach” or coverage area, it is very large. What is aggravating about the back-to-back articles is that these new technologies (some of which in themselves are wireless, exposing people to unnecessary RF) are providing the “solution” to “problems” likely related in the first pl ace to growing RF exposure. Look at the intelligent telephones in this article. The article says “several places, including Intel, are working on phones for people with memory problems. The phone Intel is developing user caller ID to display a photo of the person calling, the relationship of the caller, and some notes about their last phone conversation to jog the memory of a person with dementia.” Well, create the problem (RF exposure causes memory loss). Then, sell the solution (a phone that replaces lost memory). Sound familiar?

I’m trying to clarify the difference between digital cordless phones and DECT phones, which I understand are just coming to the U.S. Also, is this an accurate description of the differences in health concerns over cordless and DECT phones? My understanding is that there’s a significant dif ference between digital cordless phones and DECT (digitally _enhanced_ cordless telecommunications) phones. The latter is much more powerful and networks with computers (you can use it with Skype) and is truly wireless. The first DECT cordless phone (Linksys) was introduced in the U.S. last October, after the FCC approved the technology. DECT phones are very common in Europe, however, where they’ve been in use for a few years. The main concern about DECT phones is that they’re emitting RF radiation all the time and never “power down,” so it’s like having a mini base station in your house. There’s still concern over cordless phones, which emit RFR when you’re using them. The main issue is long-term (10+ years) heavy use. thanks again,

Hi C, Thanks again for your changes and the quick turnaround. My editors have asked for a bit more about DECT phones–how does one know one’s phone is DECT? For instance, o ne person has this phone: it says it is 5.8GHz digital, with a digital answering system. Would that mean it DECT. Is there a way to find out? Should he get rid of it, and what should people look for on packaging to know it’s DECT? Thanks again!
