Company removes banners

A CAMPAIGNING mum says she will paint her fence with slogans after her protest banners were removed.

Karen Kelly, 47, of Manor Crescent, off Akers Way, Moredon, wants a mobile phone mast moved from outside her home.

On Tuesday Mrs Kelly and other local protesters put banners up around the 45m O2 mast, which has not yet gone live.

But yesterday she returned home from shopping at lunchtime to see the banners being taken down and put into a van by a workman from the company.

"When we put them up I thought they might get pulled down by children," she said. "But I was amazed when I saw them being taken down. It must have touched a nerve."

Mrs Kelly is worried about the health risks of having a mast so near her home. She has two children Summer, eight, and Morgan, 12. Morgan has an auto-immune condition which makes him susceptible to disease.

Now she says she is going to put up more banners in a bid to keep her campaign going.

A spokeswoman for O2 confirmed the banners had been taken down but said the mast was a key part of the network in Swindon and that most people accepted you cannot have mobile phones without having masts.

The firm has said it has to rely on current research, which says there are no health risks.

Save us from 'killer' police radio masts

Some of you will have seen the excellent article in the Daily Express today, Mon 18th (Full-page article, p.13) entitled "Save us from 'killer' police radio masts" ("Protests grow nationwide over beams being linked to cancer").

Written by Tom Whitehead, this article was prompted by a lady from Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales - a site of major civil unrest on the Tetra front comparable to Cornwall and, along with Cornwall, the only other place in England that Airwave will admit to having difficulties getting enough masts up to get coverage.

The 'Opinion' column on page 10 of the same issue says:

"We need facts on masts"

"We are told by the Government that there is no official scientific research to suggest Tetra masts are harmful but we have been falsely reassured by governments before - remember BSE. It is claimed the masts cause serious - and even fatal - conditions including headaches, sleeplessness, rashes, diziness, nausea and cancer. We should have research to establish their safety now, rather than count the cost years down the line."

The lady that prompted Tom Whitehead's article, who was at a meeting in Wales that I addressed recently, phoned to tell me that she was told by the Express that if they received enough correspondence on this they would run a campaign on it. Let's not miss this golden opportunity!

Write to:
expressletters@express.co.uk

(Be sure to include your address & tel no - otherwise they won't accept your letter)

Refer to the above article, which highlights various concerns of anti-Tetra campaigners in a pretty sympathetic way (The 'disclaimers' by the NRPB, Gov't and mmO2 at the end look pretty pathetic).

Article includes info from an anonymous policeman, who "estimated that half the officers using the radios are still concerned about health risks", it also refers to death of officer Neil Dring and to complaints from 177 officers in Lancashire. Also gives cases from all over the country of symptoms and concerned people.

A good crop of letters on this subject could well prompt a national campaign by a major national daily - let's go for it!

In 1970, Congress created the EPA on the theory that only a national agency insulated from accountability to voters could produce the scientifically grounded pollution rules needed to save a careless public from its own filth. But David Schoenbrod, former Natural Resources Defense Council senior attorney, has come to the conclusion that letting the EPA dictate to the nation is a mistake. In his new book, Prof. Schoenbrod argues that the EPA is a musclebound agency that, under Democrats and Republicans alike, delays good rules, imposes bad ones, and is so massive, mighty, and remote that it does unnecessary damage to our society.

The new industrialists: They work for the government, not you

04/19/05

The overwhelming body of government work is unnecessary. There hasn't been a legitimate federal military action since The War of 1812 and that may have been unnecessary, also. The closest was the attack on Pearl Harbor that ushered us into World War II but today historians accept that we provoked the Japanese into attacking us through policies that were designed to do just that. We're all paying for this, of course, but not just through taxes to support these bureaucrats, etc. If the damage was confined to their salaries, it might be tolerable. I'd almost be willing to have the government pay their salaries and benefits but it's the effects of their jobs that bother me...

War crimes - have we learned anything?

04/18/05

You can't seem to turn the television news on at present without seeing black-and-white pictures of past horrors - Buchenwald last week, Belsen this, and Hiroshima and Nagasaki still to come in August. There was a time when we thought that killing on an industrial scale might be a thing of the past; but, depressingly, the pictures are no longer just in black and white nowadays.

It may be 32 years since General Augusto Pinochet's men began killing left-wingers in Chile, and 30 since the Khmer Rouge arrived in Phnom Penh to force the entire population out into the killing fields. But it's only 11 years since Rwanda, and 10 since the Bosnian Serb general, Ratko Mladic, ordered the murder of every male Muslim in Srebrenica. And in Darfur people are dying right now...

When media dogs don't bark

04/18/05

In the mysterious case of why mainstream news outlets aren't more aggressive in challenging corporate power large and small, Sherlock Holmes would probably conclude that the most profound clues are to be found when the media dogs don't bark. We hear the least about the most pervasive media filtration -- when thoughts go nowhere because journalists have been made to understand the limits of their profession in the present day. Advertising is part of the corporatized atmosphere that sucks the oxygen out of the newsrooms. The sound of an idea being smothered in its crib doesn't rise to the decibels of a bark or even a whimper. And media consumers don't know what they're missing...

Marla Ruzicka: The senseless death of the woman who fought George Bush

04/19/05

She looked like she should be surfing on a beach in California but Marla Ruzicka was drawn instead to Iraq and her self-appointed task of helping the civilian victims of George Bush's war. She was 28 years old and had been a peace activist since a young age. She went to Baghdad as the head of her own charity, determined to find out how many Iraqis had been killed or injured by US forces and get compensation for survivors.

At the weekend, the dedication that had taken Marla from her home in San Francisco to the war zones in Afghanistan and Iraq, led to her death. .... Some may question why Marla's death has received such extensive coverage, given that tens of thousands of civilians have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. She, for one would certainly had preferred that those victims and the people she was trying to help were the front page story. Yet, in the world in which she worked

Marla was undoubtedly exceptional. She recognised the most effective way for her to get things done was not simply to campaign as a peace activist but to focus on humanitarian efforts. Her overwhelming focus was always the victims...

Iraq -- Humanitarian Workers' Deaths Remind FCNL of Costs of U.S. War and Occupation

The violent death of humanitarian aid workers Marla Ruzicka and Faiz Ali Salim in a suicide bombing in Iraq this past weekend struck many of us with grief because she has been a regular visitor to the FCNL office in Washington. The organization she founded, the Campaign for Innocent Victims of Conflict (CIVIC), plays an important role in working to obtain U.S. government recognition of and financial support for the survivors of civilians killed or injured in armed conflict. We saw first-hand her commitment to the Iraqi people because FCNL played a small role in supporting Marla’s work as she began her project by serving as the fiscal agent for some of those donating to her projects.

Her death, and the death of her Iraqi colleague, Faiz Ali Salim (the father of a 2-month-old child), remind all of us of the violence that is continuing unabated in Iraq. Press reports suggest that at least 17 other Iraqis and 3 U.S. troops were killed on the same day as Marla and Faiz. Some reports suggest that most Iraqi deaths are simply uncounted. The U.S. military has refused since the start of the war to count Iraqi casualties.

Marla wouldn't stand for it. She fearlessly stood with the Iraqi's who had not voice, no power, no prospect of justice. She told me, "Joe, when I looked into their eyes, I just couldn't walk away and do nothing." Marla did something. She went straight to the U.S. authorities in Iraq and grabbed them by their epaulets and said, "You have a responsibility, and I'm not going to let go until you do something." She just wouldn't let the survivors of violent conflict go unnoticed, and she wouldn't allow the authorities to claim they didn't know what happened to individual people. She informed them face to face. And her Iraqi colleague Faiz exercised extraordinary courage in taking her where she needed to go, despite the terrible risks.

The headlines in the United States focus on the political dynamics and the negotiations to form the new government. Deaths are usually mentioned only if they are the deaths of U.S. nationals. But the reality for many Iraqis is that the situation on the ground is getting worse, not better, day by day (the FCNL Washington Newsletter that should be arriving in your mailboxes this week includes a personal account of what conditions on-the-ground in Iraq are like today).

The story of on-the-ground conditions in Iraq, however, is still not getting through to your elected leaders in Washington. This week, probably either late Tuesday or Wednesday, the U.S. Senate will almost certainly vote to approve tens of billions of dollars in additional funding for the war and occupation of Iraq. More and more senators are telling us that they believe the FCNL proposal that the Congress declare that the U.S. has no imperial intentions in Iraq is an important way to advance the debate on U.S. policy for Iraq. But we are still a long way from winning passage of an amendment affirming that it is the U.S. intention to withdraw all military troops and bases from Iraq.

I’m including at the bottom of this email links to the web site for Marla’s group, CIVIC, and to a very good statement released by Senator Patrick Leahy, who was a strong supporter of Marla’s work. Here at FCNL we will continue to honor the work of Marla and the tens of thousands of others who have died in the Iraq war and occupation by continuing to press Congress to declare that the U.S. has no imperial ambitions in Iraq. As I go into congressional offices, I’ll stop outside the door to silently remind myself – Marla, presente – before I go inside to engage congressional staff and members of Congress.

Ruzicka: US kept secret tally of Iraqi civilian deaths

04/20/05

A week before she was killed by a suicide bomber, humanitarian worker Marla Ruzicka forced military commanders to admit they did keep records of Iraqi civilians killed by US forces.Tommy Franks, the former head of US Central Command, famously said the US army 'don't do body counts,' despite a requirement to do so by the Geneva Conventions. But in an essay Ms Ruzicka wrote a week before her death on Saturday and published yesterday, the 28-year-old revealed that a Brigadier General told her it was 'standard operating procedure' for US troops to file a report when they shoot a non-combatant. She obtained figures for the number of civilians killed in Baghdad between 28 February and 5 April, and discovered that 29 had been killed in firefights involving US forces and insurgents...

HEALTH CAN BE A KEY MAST ISSUE

11:00 - 18 April 2005

I Refer to The Bath Chronicle's articles of April 14 about mobile phone masts. Geoff Webber, B &NES' planning control manager quoted the Government's planning policy guidance on telecommunication (PPG8) paragraph 30 saying that health concerns cannot to be considered when determining mobile phone mast planning applications. However, Mr Webber failed to mention that Government guidance (paragraph 29) also states: "Health considerations and public concern can in principle be material considerations in determining applications for planning permission... It is for the decision maker (usually the local planning authority) to determine what weight to attach to such considerations in any particular case."

So the guidance is at best ambiguous but does allow for health considerations to be taken into account. However, when local council tax payers object to being bombarded with harmful electro magnetic radiation from masts sited on their doorstep, planning authorities conveniently ignore paragraph 29 of the Government guidance and side with the mobile phone operators.

I should point out that independent research is constantly highlighting the damaging effects of the low level electro magnetic radiation emissions pulsing from these masts. Unsurprisingly, it is only the vested interest of Government and mobile phone operator funded research that appears to try and prove low risk to health. Some research suggests that the current (ICNIRP) Government guidelines for mast emissions are 9,000 times too high. The guidelines were adopted by government 13 years ago in the technology's infancy.

They were approved following testing on animals subjected to 20 minutes of this electro magnetic radiation. People living in the vicinity of mobile phone masts are currently subjected to this radiation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Unsurprisingly, ill health clusters are appearing around these masts.

Federal ‘Marshall Plan’ Needed to Protect Children’s Health and Schools

Federal ‘Marshall Plan’ Needed to Protect Children’s Health and Schools, Groups Say; 'National Healthy Schools Day' April 18

4/18/2005 10:44:00 AM

To: National Desk, Health and Education Reporters

Contact: Claire Barnett of the Healthy Schools Network, 212-482-0204, or Sabrina Jones of the American Public Health Association, 202-777-2509

WASHINGTON, April 18 /U.S. Newswire/ -- School building environmental problems are eroding children’s health and test scores. Parent, public health, environment, and education groups today urged the White House and federal agencies to develop a “ Marshall Plan” to identify and to promote solutions to protect the nation’s schools and the health and safety of schoolchildren. This critical issue deserves an action plan that involves federal awareness and intervention, the groups say.

Each day 54 million schoolchildren and six million adults -— 20 percent of the entire U.S. population -— enter our nation’s school buildings. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, one-half of the nation’s schools have problems with indoor air quality, as well as problems with lead, radon, asbestos, chemical spills, molds, and poor lighting.

Healthy Schools Network Executive Director Claire Barnett said, “Today is another un-Healthy School Day, with 54 million children in schools with serious environmental problems that erode children’s health. This is not just a local issue. This is America’s largest, single unaddressed public health problem facing the federal agencies.”

According to the groups, many school facilities have been poorly maintained and thousands of our nation’s schools remain severely overcrowded. These problems contribute to absenteeism, student medication use, learning difficulties, sick building syndrome, staff turnover, and greater liability for school districts.

American Public Health Association’s Executive Director Georges C. Benjamin, MD, FACP: "It is unconscionable that millions of our nation's children, many of them from low-income households, are surrounded daily by environmental health hazards such as unsafe indoor air, chemicals, asbestos and mold. This is a problem that should be addressed swiftly and thoroughly at the federal level. Adults expect to work in safe buildings, why not children?”

This is the story of what Mr. Blair did not tell us before sending British troops into battle.

On the second anniversary of the Iraq war, Panorama reveals how several of the claims he made in public during the build up to the war - and afterwards - conflict with what we now know was going on behind the scenes, as evidenced for instance by government officials and documents.

Stalking: Zypries will Straftatbestand gegen Telefonterror, Auflauern und Bedrohung

18.04.05

Stop Canada's Cruel and Senseless Seal Hunt

With the first phase of Canada's annual seal hunt in the Gulf of St. Lawrence now over, more than 105,000 seals have been killed. Spectacular ice floes transformed into giant white nurseries just weeks ago are now stained red with the blood of seal carcasses as far as the eye can see. Last week they began killing another 200,000 seals in Newfoundland.

The Canadian government maintains that the hunt is humane. But our observers returning from the ice have witnessed numerous acts of cruelty and suffering, from clubbed baby seals left in agony while hunters move quickly onto the next seal, to seals shot and left to die a slow death under the ice. As IFAW's video footage shows, the seal hunt continues to inflict unnecessary suffering and cruelty to baby seals as young as 12 days old.

Thanks to your earlier efforts, we have made great strides in building the international outrage needed to end the slaughter.

But we need your help to intensify the pressure on Canada's government to end the hunt!

Please cut and paste this message into an email to your friends to maintain the momentum:

Dear Friends,

I have just read and signed the petition:
"Stop Canada's Cruel and Senseless Seal Hunt" from The International Fund for Animal Welfare:
http://www.care2.com/go/z/23181

Many people are unaware that hundreds of thousands of baby seals are still being cruelly killed each year mainly for their fur -- frivolous luxury items that no one really needs! Please help by speaking out against the largestgovernment sanctioned slaughter of marine mammalsin the world by signing this petition.

Every voice raised against such a cruel and unnecessary hunt is critical to raising the public pressure needed toconvince the Canadian government to change.

Thank you!

Mobilfunk-Petition für den Pongau geplant

ST. Johann (SN-S.P.).

Patriot Act evasions

04/15/05

Memo to Congress: Whenever Attorney General Alberto Gonzales starts talking like a, you know, sort of likably dodgy teenager confronted with dings on the family car, it's time to pay close attention. In the first round of Congressional hearings into the Patriot Act, the normally precise Gonzales took on the oily grammar of evasion whenever he was pressed on a core civil liberties issue: 'Let me, kind of, reassure the committee and the American people' (on snooping into library and medical records). 'That's a difficult question that requires, sort of, a case-by-case analysis' (on rendition of prisoners to regimes with a record of torture). ... The sunset review of the Patriot Act marks a singular opportunity for Congress to catalogue abuses and rethink the Administration's rights-shredding approach to security. The Administration's obsession with secrecy makes a proper evaluation difficult, but the limited evidence so far available is alarming...

On the estate tax, Republicans believe in Darwinism

It's the greed season. Republicans in the House just voted, by a lopsided margin, to permanently repeal the estate tax. ... But no effort is such an affront to our bedrock principle of equal opportunity as trashing the estate tax. ... The estate tax was a pillar of the Progressive movement 100 years ago, and the Republicans want to turn the clocks back, way back, beyond the New Deal, back past the Progressive Era, to the halcyon days of social Darwinism, the only kind of Darwinism they believe in." [editor's note: Bemoaning the end of the "death tax" -- specifically designed as it was to divert wealth AWAY from the families of those who made it, and into the public trough -- is another bad habit of "progressives" that we libertarians want to exorcise. America's religious right: Hang ten and fight Part 2

04/15/05

In their wisdom, the Founding Fathers foresaw the conflicts that government involvement in such questions would bring. Which is why, despite their personal religious convictions, they set out to keep God and government out of each other's way. Over succeeding generations, religious believers like Judge Moore have slowly broken through the wall of separation, as during the Cold War hysteria of the 1950s, when Congress put the words 'under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance and made 'In God We Trust' the national motto. Each succeeding generation of militants then uses the earlier breakthroughs to justify far more, all in pursuit of what Judge Moore call 'a Christian nation.'" Next terrorist attack could sink US economy

The next major terrorist attack on the U.S. could plunge our economy into deep recession from which it may take years to recover. That's the disturbing, but all too believable conclusion of Robert D. Hormats, Managing Director of Goldman, Sachs. Hormats argues that in 2005, the U.S. economy is much more vulnerable to disruption from a terrorist attack than it was before 9/11. In 2001, the federal budget was running a large surplus. Today it is running a huge deficit. In addition, the U.S. is spending large amounts of money on war in Afghanistan and Iraq, homeland defense, and other security-related activities...

The greatest reverence the founding fathers showed was their profound love of this world, and of man's place in it. It is long past time for them to join the twenty-first century -- or, at the very least, the eighteenth. It does not navigate the world with attention to outcomes, and ours is a world in which all human endeavors are expected to achieve. Its bureaucratic structures are fine for dealing with repetitive tasks but it cannot face new challenges. It can consume resources but it is incapable of producing them. Rice: If the report makes you look bad, just eliminate it

Several U.S. officials defended the abrupt decision, saying the methodology the National Counterterrorism Center used to generate statistics for the report may have been faulty, such as the inclusion of incidents that may not have been terrorism. Last year, the number of incidents in 2003 was undercounted, forcing a revision of the report, 'Patterns of Global Terrorism.' But other current and former officials charged that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's office ordered 'Patterns of Global Terrorism' eliminated several weeks ago because the 2004 statistics raised disturbing questions about the Bush's administration's frequent claims of progress in the war against terrorism...

Mainstream Media beginning to awaken to the Threat of Dominionists attempt to take over the U.S.A.

(excerpt)

We have several new articles that are important. The great news is that the mainstream media is beginning to awaken to the threat of Dominionists attempt to take over the U.S.A. Here are several articles that came out in the last few weeks and are reprinted on our web site:

First: More on the Dominionists' "Reclaiming America For Christ"
by Bob Moser
Rolling Stone

In the conference's opening ceremony, the Dominionists recite an oath they dream of hearing in every classroom: "I pledge allegiance to the Christian flag, and to the Savior for whose kingdom it stands. One Savior, crucified, risen and coming again, with life and liberty for all who believe."

http://www.yuricareport.com/Dominionism/ChristiansPlotToRemakeAmerica.html

Secondly, writing about the same conference as Bob Mosser, Jane Lampman tells the story a little differently:

A Mission To 'Reclaim America'

by Jane Lampman, writing in the Christian Science Monitor and on CBS news-web site

In material given to conference attendees, the Rev. D. James Kennedy, Coral Ridge pastor wrote: "As the vice-regents of God, we are to bring His truth and His will to bear on every sphere of our world and our society. We are to exercise godly dominion and influence over our neighborhoods, our schools, our government ... our entertainment media, our news media, our scientific endeavors - in short, over every aspect and institution of human society."

http://www.yuricareport.com/Dominionism/MissionToReclaimAmerica.html

Here's a short piece by Katherine, but it is chilling to the core. Michael Ledeen has been linked to the forgery of the Niger Uranium documents that convinced America to preemptively strike Iraq. Ledeen is the international adviser to Karl Rove and the White House. Here are a few chilling excerpts from his book Machiavelli on Modern Leadership--if you haven't read this do so now. It raises questions of why an adviser to the President is discussing the necessity of a "temporary dictatorship."

Everything You Need to Know About Michael Ledeen

By Katherine Yurica

He wrote, "Paradoxically, preserving liberty may require the rule of a single leader, a dictator, willing to use those dreaded extraordinary measures, which few know how, or are willing, to employ." To find out a little about Michael Ledeen, the man who may have forged the documents, click here.
