New ‘Swarm’ of Quakes at Yellowstone Super Volcano

by Mitch Battros - ECTV

I guess I should say, really to no surprise, Yellowstone Super Volcano has jumped significantly in small earthquake activity. See latest count here. So far the largest reading is 2.5 magnitude.

Mt. Hood has also seen seismic activity in the last week. The latest “recorded” was October 4th showing a 2.1 mag. which had been upgraded to a 2.4 mag.. Notice I say “latest recorded”. The reason for this hesitation, if for whatever reason, the USGS is not updating in “real time”. Actually, not even daily. See latest count here.

I have recently received word, yet to be confirmed, that Mt. Adams is also showing movement. But when I go to the USGS volcanic/quake site, the only think I get is a red blink headline which reads “These maps are not being updated for Mount St. Helens events.” This obviously includes the whole Cascade Range including Mt. Adams. Here is the link to Mt. Adams seismic updates. The last registered! update was September 8th 2004. See page here:

Cell Towers and Health Risks to School Children

Message from Don Maisch:

I got your e-mail address from Milt Bowling of Vancouver, B.C. I'm a health policy analyst and parent of kids in the Fairfax Co., Virginia (Washington, D.C. area) school system. I began investigating the health risks of cell phones and cellular transmission antennas at the beginning of the year. I am very concerned about the mass-marketing of cell phones to kids and placement of cell towers near schools and homes.

In our county, the school board has entered the cellular business by signing contracts with the wireless industry to site cell towers and rooftop antennas at schools. Together with another parent, I began a group called Protect Schools. We set up a web site to help educate the public about the health risks of wireless technology and to try to convince the school board to get out of bed with the wireless industry and stop putting our kids at risk. Surprisingly, when one examines the deal closely, the school system may actually be losing money on it!

Milt said that you have a mailing list providing information about RF health effects. The piece you did on cell phones and kids in the Journal of Australasian College of Nutritional & Evironmental Medicine is one of the best I've read about cell phones and kids and I have been passing copies of it out for months. Thanks for writing it.

Please check out our web site:

We welcome any suggestions/comments.

Cell Towers and Health Risks to School Children

We are parents of children attending schools in Fairfax County, Virginia. We've established this web site because we have become very concerned about Fairfax County Public Schools' contracts with Milestone Communications and cellular telephone companies to build wireless transmission facilities on school grounds. So far, cellular monopoles have been erected at six schools and many more are in the works. By entering this commercial venture, the school system is exposing children to increased levels of radiofrequency/microwave radiation from cellular antennas. This issue is of concern to all people living in Fairfax County who want schools to maintain a safe learning environment for all students.

Our concerns are based on research that shows biological effects and potential health impacts near cellular towers. We don't think the schools' commercial venture with Milestone and cellular telephone companies is a wise policy. It is not worth the risk to our kids' health and capacity to learn, especially for the relatively small amount of money the school system is receiving in return. With this web site we would like to share information about this issue and provide a forum for further discussion and action.

Our Protect Schools Coalition is growing and includes people from a variety of backgrounds, including parents of kids whose schools are directly targeted for cell towers. Please sign our Petition.

Under this deal, Milestone and the school system actively market schools as sites for cellular transmission facilities. Virtually all county schools are candidates.

Peacekeepers With Ray Guns

"Peacewagons” move around quickly, and rapidly disperse hostile crowds

Next Summer, the U.S. Army and Marines are sending to Iraq a number of wheeled armored vehicles (Stryker, Armored Security Vehicle and marine LAV) equipped with a number of electronic non-lethal weapons. The three most likely weapons to be used are; Active Denial System (ADS). This one looks like a small, flat, radar dish. It transmits, a 92 gigahertz signal which will penetrate human flesh to less than half a millimeter, and in less than a second make people feel like their skin is on fire. But people would require the beam to stay on them for over four minutes before any actual burning would take place. Tests on volunteers confirm the burning sensation, and the desire to get out of the area quickly. How well this would work against various types of hostile crowds is not known. But the system has been in development for some fifteen years, and it’s thought that it will be safe and will produce no surprises. Some scientists have warned of possible eye damage, but this has not shown up in human tests. Current range is about 500 meters, although work has been underway to extend that by at least fifty percent. However, used on a large crowd, it could cause a stampede that could cause injuries, and even death. In any event, the media will condemn the system as inhumane. Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD), which is a high-powered bullhorn type of device that sends out a focused stream of sound. This can be used to tell to direct a verbal message to about 300 meters on land (and over 500 meters over water.) LRAD also has the capacity to send a focused sound that causes pain as well.

Such “peacewagons” could move around quickly, and rapidly disperse hostile crowds, without killing a lot of people. In a place like Iraq, you would still have to deal with hostile fire, which is why this equipment is being carried on an armored vehicle...

Powerful new Mobilization Resource

We have created a powerful new mobilization resource to facilitate the fast propagation of an email writing campaign on any issue of importance from friend to friend.

The People's Email Network is a nationally coordinated system designed to have a real impact on Washington through large numbers of personally written emails. Our website at http://www.thepen.us
automatically looks up your congressional representatives, submits your emails to each of them, and at the same time formats outgoing messages to any other email addresses you provide.

The website is revolutionary in its capability of receiving as input lists of email addresses which it can then distribute among the participants for mailing. Won't you visit http://www.thepen.us/ and cast your first vote on the war in Iraq? And then do all you can to spread the word about this breakthrough.

The MOTHER LOAD of ALL MASS EMAILERS..DO IT!

Someone gave me the link to the Mother Load of all mass emailers to send letters to the editor out to many newspapers across the country. The link to this mass emailer is, http://capwiz.com/au/dbq/media/

Once there, you will a map of the United States at the bottom. Here are the steps to use this wonderful tool.

1) Click on the state that you want to send letters to. You may only do five letters at once, but can come back and do several more as I did with Texas where I sent ten letters to ten different papers.

2) Select the papers you wish to send letters to concentrating on the larger circulation papers. If you are not sure if the state is small, do what I did. The eenie, meenie, miney moe strategy.

3) Go down to where it says, ‘Compose Letter’ and click on that.

4) Once there, have a fully prepared letter to copy and paste in the text portion box, choose a subject title. I chose, ‘I Want America Back’ and ‘America It Is Time for a Change’, fill out the contact information and choose the ‘Remember Me’ box. Why choose the ‘Remember Me’ box, this way it is all filled in once you have clicked on the submit button and will stay there when you do the step below.

5) Then after you click on the ‘Submit’ button go back to the top and click on ‘Media’ and do it all over again.

I have just finished doing five letters to over forty states including the red and battle ground states. Interesting enough, an editor from the Sheridan Press which is a paper in Wyoming (Cheney’s home state) just called me and they are running my letter.

So, let’s get busy, get this job done and get those letters sent TODAY!

Democratically Yours,
Mary!

Cheney proves his irrelevance

by Thomas Oliphant

Boston Globe

10/06/04

The country doesn't need Dick Cheney any more. After his 90 minutes on the stage last night, it is clear he is no longer an essential person in politics and government. What he brings to the table are liabilities. In debate against an opponent with the dangerously attractive attribute of freshness, Cheney paled -- literally. He's not special, it turns out. He doesn't know anything special, he hasn't done anything special, and for the future he doesn't offer anything special. Cheney is now just another vice president who has had his hour on the stage without really mattering or making a difference. Four years ago, he had a glow of the Wizard of Oz about him, filling an obvious hole in his running mate's background; last night, Cheney was just the grumpy old man behind the curtain...

Bush's brave new world

by Sheldon Richman

Future of Freedom Foundation

10/06/04

President Bush's little-publicized New Freedom Commission on Mental Health has proposed comprehensive mental-illness screening for all Americans. If this proposal is carried out, which is Bush's intention, no adult or child will be safe from intrusive probing by 'experts,' backed by drug companies, who believe that mental illness is woefully underdiagnosed and therefore that many millions of people ought to be taking powerful and expensive psychiatric drugs. Schools and doctors' offices will become quasi-psychiatric monitoring stations...

A final take on Iraqi WMD

Christian Science Monitor

10/06/04

Here's the US government's bottom line: No, Iraq didn't have significant stockpiles of chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons at the time of the US-led invasion last spring. But the concept of weapons of mass destruction was important to Saddam Hussein. Mr. Hussein personally believes that WMDs saved his skin twice -- first, when he used chemical weapons in the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, and second, when their threat helped halt US troops short of Baghdad in the Persian Gulf War. And what Hussein wants, Hussein tries to get, says the final report of the CIA-led Iraq Survey Group. His country may have been boxed in by international sanctions, and he may have been delusional about its resources, but he himself represented a sort of WMD-in-waiting, eager to reconstitute his weapons programs in time...

Senate wants database dragnet

Wired News

10/06/04

The Senate could pass a bill as early as Wednesday evening that would let government counter-terrorist investigators instantly query a massive system of interconnected commercial and government databases that hold billions of records on Americans. The proposed network is based on the Markle Foundation Task Force's December 2003 report, which envisioned a system that would allow FBI and CIA agents, as well as police officers and some companies, to quickly search intelligence, criminal and commercial databases. The proposal is so radical, the bill allocates $50 million just to fund the system's specifications and privacy policies...

Diverse Krebstode um Antennen

Kommentar zu: Anwälte kritisieren Messpraxis bei Mobilfunk

http://www.buergerwelle.de/body_newsletter_51004.html

„ONE-NIGHT-STANDS“ in Ordnung finden !

GEHIRN EINSCHALTEN -- HANDY ABSCHALTEN !
VORSORGE IST BESSER ALS NACHSORGE !
IHRE GESUNDHEIT WIRD ES IHNEN DANKEN !

Norwegian Study on Breast Cancer and Power Line Proximity

Norwegian study on breast cancer and exposure to hi-voltage power lines.

Dr. Jolanta Kliukiene (evidently born in Poland), who is a doctoral student working at the Norwiegen "kreftregisteret" (Nor. cancer registery) has published a study in May 2004 which concludes that women who live near (100 M) hi-tension power lines have nearly 60 higher risk indeveloping breast cancer than other women.

This sparked a large debate here in Scandinavia, and the study has been critized both internally and externally.

I am posting the abstract, this should be enough for you to locate the article on the web in fulltext.

A case-control study was conducted to investigate whether residential and occupational exposures to magnetic fields increased the risk for breast cancer among women. Cases of breast cancer diagnosed during 1980–1996 were identified in a cohort of women living near a high-voltage power line in Norway in 1980 or between 1986 and 1996. Each case was matched by year of birth, municipality, and first year of entry into the cohort with two randomly selected controls without cancer. Residential exposure to magnetic fields was calculated as that generated by the lines before diagnosis, and occupational exposure was based on exposure matrix data. Women with residential exposure had an odds ratio of 1.58 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.30, 1.92) when compared with unexposed women. The odds ratios for exposed women versus unexposed women with estrogen receptor (ER)-positive and ER-negative breast cancer were 1.33 (95% CI: 0.93, 1.90) and 1.40 (95% CI: 0.78, 2.50), respectively (ER status was available for 44% of the cases). Women with the highest occupational exposure had an odds ratio of 1.13 (95% CI: 0.91, 1.40) when compared with those unexposed at work. The findings suggest an association between exposure to magnetic fields and breast cancer in women.

Abstract (Übersetzung):

Stop the Genocide of indigenous People and their Land

Media Advisory - Week of Action to Stop the Genocide of First Peoples - please reprint and circulate

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Aboriginals will occupy churches and government offices across Canada to recover remains of their people

October 6, 2004: Unceded Coast Salish Territory ("Vancouver, Canada")

A campaign of civil disobedience to expose and stop the Genocide of indigenous people and their land will commence in major cities across Canada on "Columbus Day", Monday, October 11, 2004.

The nine affiliated groups comprising The Truth Commission into Genocide in Canada announced this campaign today in response to the refusal of the government and churches of Canada to identify the secret burial sites of more than 50,000 aboriginal children who died or were killed in church-run "Indian residential schools".

The campaign will commence with selected protests outside the churches responsible for the residential schools and will escalate into civil disobedience and disruption of government facilities and church activities. These churches include the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian and United Church of Canada.

"We have tried being polite and going through their court system, but that's gotten us nowhere" commented Haida elder Wilfred Price of The Truth Commission.

"Mass murder was done to my people and we demand to know where the churches buried the children who never came home from the residential schools. Innocent children were tortured, sterilized, and murdered. Their spirits will never rest until their remains are brought home to their own territory."

The Truth Commission has also instructed its member organizations to support the efforts of indigenous people in Hawaii and elsewhere to force the revoking of the Catholic church's infamous Inter Catera Bull of 1493, which sanctioned and justified the conquest and Genocide of aboriginal people by Christianity.

"European religion was the cause of the murder of over 90% of the Haida Nation. My people are still dying in droves from the fallout of this invasion, and our land is still being robbed and desecrated" said elder Wilfred Price today. "Until those responsible for this Genocide are brought to trial, there can be no rest, and no justice, for any of us.

"I'm going to personally burn a copy of the Inter Catera Bull outside a Catholic church to show that the days of religious control of my people are over."

The Week of Action has received the endorsement of indigenous and human rights groups in Guatemala, the United States, England and Germany. Its aim is to force an international inquiry by the United Nations into the past and present Genocide of aboriginal people in Canada.

Elections will not end the fighting in Iraq

by Patrick Cockburn

TruthOut

10/05/04

The situation on the ground in Iraq is far worse than what is portrayed by the media. Ironically, this is because it is now so dangerous for journalists and television crews to leave their heavily guarded hotels in Baghdad that they cannot refute claims by the American and British governments that much of Iraq is safe. Nothing could be more untrue. I have spent most of the past year-and-a-half travelling in Iraq, and I have never known it so bad. The roads all around Baghdad are cut by insurgents. At Mahmoudiyah, just south of the capital, rebels in black masks felt confident enough last week to establish a checkpoint on the main road to Najaf. .... If an election is held in January, it will not end the fighting. If the Sunni Muslims do not take part, but the Shia and Kurds do, then Iraq will be even more divided. A great number of Iraqis also believe that you simply cannot have a free and fair election with 138,000 US troops in the country...

As the self-appointed guardians of democracy, Americans are used to monitoring elections overseas in contested hot spots and fledgling democracies. But amid memories of Florida 2000 and concerns about electronic voting and voter-registration lists, Americans are finding the tables have turned. This year, one monitoring project invited more than 20 international observers from 15 countries including Australia, Argentina, South Africa and Zambia to help monitor the presidential election and increase voter confidence. In addition, more than 60 domestic groups have mobilized volunteers to monitor the election, including a group with technical expertise that will evaluate the performance of e-voting machines...

The Iraqi Nuclear Bomb That Wasn't

Here's the bottom line, according to the New York Times Editorial Board: "If Ms. Condoleezza Rice did her job and told Mr. George Bush how ludicrous the case was for an Iraqi nuclear program, then Mr. Bush terribly misled the public. If not, she should have resigned for allowing her boss to start a war on the basis of bad information and an incompetent analysis."

Playing Politics With Reform

THE HOUSE OF Representatives' version of intelligence reform might be dismissed as an election-year stunt were it not so dangerous. One section would relax restrictions on deporting people who may face torture at home, in violation of an international treaty to which this country is a party. Other sections, authorizing new surveillance powers in terrorism cases and changing the definition of criminal support for terrorist groups, may have merit but involve complex and highly controversial policy changes that warrant debate.

To Torture or Not?

Oct. 5 - President Bush today distanced himself from his administration’s quiet effort to push through a law that would make it easier to send captured terror suspects to countries where torture is used. The proposed law, recently tacked onto a much larger bill despite the fallout from last spring’s interrogation scandal, is seen as an attempt to counter a recent Supreme Court decision that would free some terror detainees being held without trial.

The Grief of Baghdad

Here is a reminder of the human cost of the Iraq War. In the article below by Evan Derkacz, "The painful stories and pictures of some of the 16,000 American soldiers – like Cpl. Tyson Johnson – wounded in Iraq might move Americans to action. Maybe that's why we don't see them in the mainstream media." Veterans and the public have a moral duty to remember and recognize the sacrifices of our Nation's soldiers.

Pilots toast Hit on Iraqi 'Civilians'

Take them out, dude: pilots toast hit on Iraqi 'civilians'
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/story.jsp?story=569207

The Pentagon said yesterday it was investigating cockpit video footage that shows American pilots attacking and killing a group of apparently unarmed Iraqi civilians.

The 30-second clip shows the pilot targeting the group of people in a street in the city of Fallujah and asking his mission controllers whether he should "take them out". He is told to do so and, shortly afterwards, the footage shows a huge explosion where the people were. A second voice can be heard on the clip saying: "Oh, dude."

The existence of the video, taken last April inside the cockpit of a US F-16 fighter has been known for some time, though last night's broadcast by Channel 4 News is believed to be the first time a mainstream broadcaster has shown the footage.

At no point during the exchange between the pilot and controllers does anyone ask whether the Iraqis are armed or posing a threat. Critics say it proves war crimes are being committed.

Bulldozer destroyed the Grounds for a Cellular Antenna

Dozens of Julis citizens destroyed with bulldozer the grounds for a cellular antenna

by Jacky Huri

Haaretz 6/10/2004

Dozens of residents from the eastern neighbourhood from the Druz village Julis in the western Galil destroyed the night before yesterday with bulldozer, the grounds for cellular antenna that was supposed to be erected, because of concern for their health and for the village's health.

Riad Hamza, former head of the local council, said that "in the village there's a full agreement that these antennas are danger for health. We heard about many places in Israel where there was a frightening increase in cancer rate because of the many antennas in their area. We want to anticipate trouble."

The head of the Julis council, lawyer Nadim Amar that was chosen several days ago, said that in the first meeting of the council he intends to take a decision that forbids cellular antennas in the village.

Also in the village Yanuh [where people were killed as a result of their fight to remove antennas] the people resist the antennas. On Monday, representatives from the village met with officials from the companies Pelephone and Partner and agreed to stop the antennas activity in Yanuh and remove all the antennas within 3 months. The two companies representatives claimed in the meeting that there is no danger from the antennas and that they are ready for every check because the radiation power from the antennas is very low. They agreed to distribute material on the subject.

Einstein School Update
The environment ministry suddenly changed its mind and Dr. Stelian Galberg said that if within 1 week the radiation will not be lowered, the ministry will act with all the legal means to stop the antennas. (local newspaper Eyal Lerman Yediot Haifa 6.10.2004)

Meanwhile the parents went to demonstration on Sunday in front of that site, and plan to do a protest walk against the antennas. They say they don't care about the monitoring stations and the radiation level results-all they care is that the antennas will be inactivated, and "stop cooking our children" like one of the parents said.

The Oil Factor : Behind the War on Terror

ANYBODY CAN PLAINLY SEE THAT BUSH INVADED IRAQ FOR ITS OIL !

NOW do you know that :

* at the current production rate, North America and Western Europe will run out of oil in 2010 ?

* One million U.S. military personnel are deployed overseas near oil fields and oil routes ?

* U.S. military deployment in Afghanistan and Central Asia blocks China and Russia from accessing oil and natural gas they desperately need for their economies ?

Is invading foreign countries the solution to reducing terrorist threats against the United States ? Since George Bush’s invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, Islamic fundamentalists are recruiting more than ever and acts of terrorism have multiplied around the world.

Now Dick Cheney claims that "the American way of life is not negotiable". The real question becomes: is invading foreign countries the acceptable way to ensure that the average American can go on consuming 4 times more energy that the average European or 32 times more energy than the average African ?

After spending three months in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Free-Will assesses the catastrophic results of Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and George Bush Jr.’s attacks on Iraq and Afghanistan. THE OIL FACTOR looks at both the human cost and the greater geo-strategic picture of these invasions that may precipitate the world toward the next global conflict.

Filled with solid facts and figures, easy-to-understand maps, original footage shot in Iraq and Afghanistan and interviews of such personalities as Zbigniew Brzezinski, Noam Chomsky, The Project for the New American Century Director Gary Schmitt, best-seller "Taliban" author Ahmed Rashid or Pentagon’s Karen Kwiatkowski, THE OIL FACTOR is a must-see for anyone who wants to understand what is really at stake with today’s "war-on-terror". It is a must-see also for anyone who wants to convince friends and family that another four years of such war may NOT be in the best interest of the American people and that of the world.

Kamera-Handys : Schau`n mer mal

Help track the activities of VP Cheney

Attached is a very good resource tool to help track the activities of VP Cheney. The VP Debates are tomorrow night so you may want to review and forward this to anyone you feel it would be useful. If you already have this resource, my apologies for the redundancy, if not, make use of it...it's very good!

3. SFGate: TOO YOUNG TO DIE/Infant Deaths
California has one of the nation's lowest rates of infant mortality, but from San Francisco to Los Angeles there are pockets where babies are twice as likely to die before their first birthday... Babies born in the United States are twice as likely to die as those of Sweden, Iceland, Japan, Spain or even the Czech Republic.
