I understand Repacholi, formerly of the World Health Organisation, has been generously giving info to the Jersey media (and to the Scrutiny Committee?).

I attach for your interest - and to pass on to said Committee if you wish - information relating to his antics during and since his time with the WHO, including clear info of industry money bankrolling his activities during that time and his 'adoption' by the industry since.

The email below was originally provided to a friend who was trying to persuade a local landowner that the WHO advice handed to them by the operator was NOT as independent as they claimed.

I hope you find it useful.

Regards

Grahame

Have attached three more docs for your interest. They all relate to Mike Repacholi, who was head of EMF research at the WHO until last year - there was a massive public outcry against his clearly biased attitude in favour of the industry, and he eventually left (or was booted out).

These are all from Microwave News, probably the most reliable, and highly respected worldwide, publication on EMF issues.

In MW News Repacholi you'll see that his friends in the industry have given him a nice little number following his exit from the WHO. On the last full page of this you'll find details of industry money going into the WHO EMF bandwagon, as detailed by the industry themselves.

The other two pull no punches about Repacholi's obvious fovouritism towards the industry. Louis Slesin of MW News (a great guy - he chaired sessions at a conf on Kids & Leukaemia I went to) has consistently pointed to industry money going into the WHO EMF farce and the massive bias of the WHO EMF project, under Repacholi, towards industry. You have to ask, if it's not all absolutely bang-on, why have the WHO not taken action against Slesin and why has Repacholi now left the WHO scene???

Mobile masts safe, report says

[Posted: Fri 23/03/2007]

By Angela Long

There is no health risk to either children or adults from proximity to mobile phone base stations, according to a report done for the government.

The mobile phone masts have been controversial, especially the decision to place many of them on the roofs of garda stations around the country.

But the report by an expert group commissioned in 2005 says there is no evidence of any adverse health effects from these masts.

The report, Health Effects of Electromagnetic Fields, also says that mobile phones themselves are not a health hazard. There is no data to suggest that the radio frequencies emitted by phones can harm child health.

The report notes that the only time at which children could be at risk to Radiofrequency Fields (RF) exposure to their heads is very early, up to the age of two.

Power lines are another potential electromagnetic risk which have been cleared by the expert group. Studies of the exposure to electricity at Extremely Low Frequency (ELF), such as comes from power lines, have not shown any harmful effects, the report says. It says current evidence does not allow for a conclusive judgement, but there are no identified harmful effects.

It recommends, among other measures, that local authorities should avoid arbitrary policies regarding the siting of phone masts and similar structures.

The report concludes that the risk from cancer or related conditions has been ruled out, but that other effects from mobile phone use such as cognitive function and sleep quality need more research.

The report says the chance of any harm from the electromagnetic sources is, on present knowledge, very tiny. It contrasts this with a set of known risks, such as death by heart attack (one in four), death from a fall (one in 380), death from the flu (one in 5,000) and death as the result "of a plane falling on you" (one in 25 million).

It notes that the public fear of radiation from mobile phone masts is much greater than that from mobile phones themselves, yet this is not rational. The report also notes that there are hundreds of emissions from the broadcasts of radio and television in the air, of which people are unaware, and are unaffected.

The expert group was led by Professor Michael Repacholi, former co-ordinator of the Radiation and Environmental Health Unit at the World Health Organisation. Its report was presented to the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources.

Electromagnetic Radiation: Cables 'safer' than mobile masts

Watch out for Richard and Judy TV show, Chanel 4 at 5pm on Friday as they are doing a feature on EHS.

Please read enclosed news following Dr George Carlo’s visit to Jersey. He gave evidence to the scrutiny panel looking into health and phone masts as the operators want to increase the amount of phone masts on the tiny Island of Jersey, if the evidence goes against them they will have a threefold increase in phone masts.

The Jersey news article states that a WHO scientist claimed symptoms associated with mast radiation are often psychological. The WHO scientist is Dr Mike Repacholi - hasn’t he left WHO? I have been told that the phone operators paid for him to represent them in Jersey and we need to find out if this is true.

Mike Repacholi also gave an interview on the radio in Ireland along with Dr Carlo and Jasper Carrott. Dr Mike Repacholi spoke as though he was representing WHO until the radio interviewer asked him why he had left WHO, he replied by saying he simply retired. People also need to know that Mike Repacholi is on the ICNIRP committee. Can he be seen as independent???

Kind Regards

Eileen O’Connor

Cables 'safer' than mobile masts

Phone mast

Health fears have been raised by islanders at public meetings

An international expert on mobile phones has suggested that Jersey should use fibre optic cables rather than masts to transmit signals.

Dr George Carlo said there is too much background radiation already in the island to make the further use of phone masts safe.

A States scrutiny panel is reviewing mobile phone masts and has been taking advice from scientific experts.

The panel will make its findings public in the spring.

Some of the expert evidence has been conflicting.

A World Health Organisation (WHO) scientist claimed symptoms associated with mast radiation were often psychological.

But another scientist, who has advised government agencies on radio and microwave issues, claimed living within 500yds (457m) of a mast was a health risk.

People living in Jersey have attended a series of public meetings to air their views and health concerns.

New Budapest building shields residents from electrosmog

By: CaboodleNews
2007-02-26 09:46:00

Hungary's first building to protect its residents from electrosmog and radon gas was completed in November 2006. Residents report feeling more relaxed and better rested than they did in their previous homes.

Electrosmog is caused by everyday electronic devices such as radios, television sets, computer monitors and microwave ovens. The invisible electromagnetic field emanating from these and similar devices is known to increase the chance of developing health problems. Radon is a radioactive gas released from soil and rock under buildings, and is known to increase the risk of lung cancer.

The building on Berzenczei utca 39-41 in Budapest's District IX, was designed and constructed by Quadrat Kft. The company used a system developed in-house known as the "Quadrat System" to protect residents in the 34 apartments from harmful radiation. The company has submitted the technology to the Hungarian Patent Office.

Residents of the Quadrat building are protected from the negative effects of electrosmog by cables, walls, wallpapers and paint that shield them from radiation. The walls of the building also block external radiation caused by transmission sites, for example and various automatic devices were built into the apartment floors to provide further protection. One of these devices cuts off unnecessary power in bedrooms after everyone has gone to bed, said Ferenc Zettisch, head engineer of Quadrat Kft.

Flats protected by Quadrat's system cost two to four per cent more per square meter than regular flats. Éva Székely Varjasné, managing director of the company, said that prospective buyers were informed about the special qualities of the building before they purchased their homes. "We have performed initial tests, and they have shown that radiation is considerably lower in these apartments. The Quadrat System is working well, and some residents have said they sleep better than earlier," she added. Residents have also volunteered to undergo medical tests to monitor their health.

HEALTH WARNING CALL FOR MOBILE PHONES

I am transcribing below an article that appeared in yesterday's SUNDAY LIFE, the leading N. Ireland Sunday newspaper.

Best, Imelda, Cork

SUNDAY LIFE, 25 February 2007 (page 22of print ed.)

"HEALTH WARNING CALL FOR MOBILE PHONES

A leading environmentalist has urged the Government to force manufacturers to carry a health warning on all mobile phones following a devastating report. Downpatrick-based Walter Graham (below) [head-shot included] made the demand after researchers found new evidence that long-term use can lead to the development of a brain tumour on the side of the user's head. Epidemiologists from five European countries found a 40pc increase in gliomas - a type of brain tumour - among those who had used a mobile for 10 years or more. There was also a clear trend showing brain tumour risk increased with years of use. The study will appear in the upcoming issue of the International Journal of Cancer. Mr Graham said: "A significant increase would have been 10pc. "But 40pc is devastating It's as dramatic as it gets and a giant wake-up call." He added: "The big companies should now be ordered to carry a warning on the packaging of all mobile phones that you have a 40pc chance of getting a brain tumour. "And it should be spelt out in big letters - just like on cigarette packets - so that when people purchase one they know they could be seriously damaging their health." Mr Graham and other campaigners from Ireland the Britain met World Health Organisation officials in Geneva last month to highlight growing concerns over mobile phones. They urged a ban on their sale to under-eights in order to protect children from the harmful side effects of radiation.
