Cell phones: Communications for the 21st century or a road to medical armageddon?

by Amy Worthington

from the April 2002 Idaho Observer

Prior to the Federal Telecom Act of 1996, it was almost impossible for the cellular communications industry to flourish because there was local control of cell tower siting. Science had already established the ill effects microwaves have on plant and animal life and no one wanted a cell tower in their backyard. Since passage of the federal act, however, cell towers have sprung up everywhere because their siting can no longer be blocked effectively at the local level. Why, in total disregard for published medical and environmental science, did the federal government provide the authority to site cell towers all over the nation? Was it to increase our cellular communications capabilities? Or, does logic and prior experience indicate something more sinister?

In order to make contact with cell tower transmitters, your cell phone emits powerful microwave signals in the high megahertz or low gigahertz frequencies.

Microwave energy oscillates at millions to billions of cycles per second. Since WWII, European, Russian and U.S. scientists have known that microwave frequencies are extremely damaging to human tissues. Research in the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry demonstrates that microwave frequencies can cause cancer and other diseases by interfering with cellular DNA and its repair.

During cell phone conversation, these cancer-causing frequencies deeply penetrate the brain, ear and eye tissues. The eye is most susceptible to microwave damage. While a standby phone is attached to the body, microwave pulses can penetrate vital organs every few minutes. Headsets and radiation mitigators have been proven generally worthless in reducing this radiation exposure. Recent scientific studies confirm that cell phone microwave can:

* Cause headaches and pressure behind the eyes

* Induce extreme fatigue

* Precipitate cataracts/ eye cancer

* Create burning sensation/rash on the skin

* Damage nerves in the scalp

* Heat the angular gyrus (brain area associated with speech and vision)

* Activate heat shock proteins in the brain (cell stress)

* Induce ringing in the ears, impair sense of smell, cause sensitivity in teeth

* Create joint pain, muscle spasms, tremors

* Cause digestive problems and raise bad cholesterol levels

* Alter the brain's EEG activity during sleep

* Open the blood-brain barrier to virus and toxins (cells leak hemoglobin)

* Reduce the number and efficiency of white blood cells

* Damage blood lymphocyte cells (immune system)

* Cause short term memory loss and difficulty concentrating

* Promote development of Alzheimer's disease

* Stimulate asthma by producing histamine in mast cells

* Stress the endocrine system, especially pancreas, thyroid, ovaries, testes

* Damage chromosomes, specifically the DNA strands

* Induce new cancers and stimulate pre-existing cancers

Scientific data confirming the horrific damage cell phones can do to the human body is found in Dr. George Carlo's great new book, Cell Phones: Invisible Hazards in the Wireless Age.

Dr. Carlo is an epidemiologist who was hired in 1993 by the telecommunications industry to head an industry-sponsored whitewash of the biological effects of cell phone radiation. His findings were so startling that he was forced to make a break with the industry and expose the raw facts to an unsuspecting public. The subtitle of his blockbuster documentary is “An Insiders's Alarming Discoveries About Cancer and Genetic Damage.”

Microwave is extremely hazardous to children. Parents in many European nations are now warned to keep children away from cell phones. University of Utah researcher found the younger the child, the more radiation is absorbed by the brain.

Spanish researchers have shown that cell phones can alter electrical activity of a child's brain for hours, causing drastic mood changes and possibly behavior and learning disabilities.

Findings published in the Journal of Bio-Electric Magnetics warn that mobile phone emissions may damage human embryos. Pregnant women are advised to be wary of mobile phones.

The effect of microwave radiation inside your vehicle is especially dangerous. Volkswagen of Europe warns that cell phone usage inside a car can be “injurious to health due to the extremely high electromagnetic fields generated.”

This is because a cell phone may increase its field strength up to 10 times to maintain communications within the metallic cage of an auto. Studies in England show that drivers talking on a cell phone are actually more impaired in function and reaction time than drunks.

The telecommunications industry and federal regulatory agencies design their own “studies” to conclude that having a microwave transmitter on your head is safe. However, many people claim to be falling ill from heavy cell phone usage. Numerous cancer-related lawsuits are now being filed against both government agencies and the cell phone industry.

Cell phones today are what tobacco was 40 years ago. The research and the debate will continue for years. Meantime, 90 million cell phone users in the U.S. have three choices:

1. Continue heavy microwave bombardment of brain tissues until disastrous health effects become obvious and irreversible. This is the “guinea pig” option.

2. Reduce cell phone usage to under 2-3 minutes per day and never use the phone in a vehicle. Many health science experts are choosing this option.

3. Obtain a hands-free set and keep the phone away from the body. Everyone in the room can then hear the two-way conversation, but less privacy sure beats brain cancer!

And don't forget to check out your cordless phone. If it has a marking that reads 900 megahertz or 2.4 gigahertz, it emits the same microwave radiation as cell phones.

Danish bus accident

Danish bus accident with 63 children (16-20 years old) on board in Germany near Euskirchen on the 18th of July returning from Spain. Two are death.

Could have been prevented!

Quite awake and no one else to blame – nevertheless the busdriver lost control over his bus. For those of us who have informed themselves about the danger of the so beloved product of the mobile industry, the cellphones, automatically the question arose, how many of the young people on the bus had their cellphones switched on, were just making a phone call or sending a SMS. For example, in hospitals and on airplanes it is forbidden to have cellphones switched on because of possible failure of any technical equipment. Not too long ago, investigation revealed that a call with a cellphone on the plane caused the crash of Robert Kennedy’s airplane. The pulsating microwaves, however, are not only causing technical breakdowns, but are also disturbing the information to be received or sent by our brain leading, for example, to the receipt of false informations, delayed reactions or just brief blackouts. Many readers may now have doubts because the warnings by international scientists are in contradiction with official statments and interests.

In this accident only two children died – but not considering this fact it will lead to many more accidents.

MOBILE PHONE MASTS AND DANGERS TO HEALTH

I'm transcribing below Dr. Don MacAuley of MAIM (Mast Action in Meath; earlier ref. to MAIM archived 19/11/02 at Citizens Initiative Omega) published response yesterday in THE IRISH TIMES to last Monday's letter written by Bob Hanna, Ireland's Dep. of Communications Chief Technical Adviser. Unlike Mr. Hanna's earlier letter in defense of the safety of Irish telecommunications however Dr. MacAuley's was not given the lead position in THE IRISH TIMES Letters section. A small point, but strategically a pointed one, so it niggles!

Best, Imelda, Cork.

THE IRISH TIMES, Thursday, July 15, 2004

"MOBILE PHONE MASTS AND DANGERS TO HEALTH

Madam, - Department of Communications Chief Technical Adviser Bob Hanna's honourable defence of the mobile phone industry (July 13th) omits several important points. Most obviously, he fails to mention an immense competing interest.

The Government, Mr. Hanna's employer, recently sold off 3G mobile phone licences, earning the Exchequer an estimated [euros]400 million since 2002. Moreover, there is growing concern among the medical and scientific community that microwave radiation is linked to serious health damage.

The Freiburg Appeal endorsed by over 1,000 doctors in Germany declared that emissions from mobile phones and masts were linked to a "dramatic rise in severe and chronic diseases", including learning, concentration and behavioural disorders, brain-degenerative diseases and cancer.

But Mr. Hanna, who is responsible for the implementation of the current emission guidelines (ICNIRP), continues to reassure us. However, these are the same guidelines that the Salzburg Resolution recommended should be 9,000 times lower than at present. The Salzburg Resolution was written by scientists from 10 countries in June 2000.

He also referes to a World Health Organisation (WHO) expert committee when the head of the WHO, Gro Harlem Brundland, recently cautioned parents about their children's use of mobile phones. The director general went on to declare that she does not own a phone and has banned the use of them in her office.

Mobile phone technology is a very new science and there is conflicting evidence to its safety. Surely we should be erring on the side of caution when there are so many reports of damage to health.

Last month, an eminent Australian neurosurgeon confirmed a 21 per cent increase in brain tumours in children. Dr. Charlie Teo is concerned about the influence of mobile phone radiation on these statistics.

In addition, Russia has banned the use of mobile phones among under-16s. Mr Hanna may be technically correct when he says there is no definitive proof of harm from non-ionising radiation but this is certainly not proof of safety.
And the Government has 400 million good reasons not to adopt the precautionary principle regarding phones and masts. With the State's plan to generate another [euros]100 million from leasing public buildings for more transmitters, it is difficult to see how Government experts can look at the science independently or objectively.

Unfortunately, like the tobacco industry, it appears that only injured people testifying in court will provide definitive proof that mobile phones and masts are damaging our health. - Yours, etc.,

Dr DON MacAULEY

MOBILE PHONE HEALTH COMPLAINTS

On turning to today's (July 13) "Letters" page of THE IRISH TIMES, I did not have to think really hard to make out why this worthy but heavily-in-denial-of-RF/MW-bioeffects broadsheet (that is THE IRISH TIMES) choose to kick off its Letters section with a lengthy entry from Bob Hanna, Ireland's Chief Technical Adviser, Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources (see his letter below). If given a stark choice between going along with all electrosensitives in Ireland being sectioned/psychiatrically incarcerated and thus permanently silencing these irksome fly-in-the-ointment-of-industry-people (EHS sufferers) OR the IRISH TIMES and Irish Telecommunications admitting that regrettably a percentage of the population could and do indeed suffer allergic reactions to RF/MWs--well, if given this choice, I have little doubt that both THE IRISH TIMES and Ir. Telecommunications would just get some psychiatrists to lock us up and perhaps run an article/obituary on the moral imperative of a final solution for vermin like us who want to injure our beloved Celtic Tiger!

Of course Bob Hanna's letter in defense of the health safety of Irish teleconmmuncations is blatantly biased. Just notice his comments regards John Ryan's and how his office is "helping" John and his family! How cynical can one get.

What this letter needs of course are cogent quick response letters micro-shredding Bob Hanna's arguments. These letters can be addressed to:

Tuesday, July 13 THE IRISH TIMES.

"MOBILE PHONE HEALTH COMPLAINTS

Madam, - I refer to the articles by Joe Humphreys and your editorial comment (July 9th) concerning the health complaints of the Ryan family of Co Tipperary following the erection of a mobile phone mast on their lands.

The headline on one of Mr Humphreys's articles reads "Monitoring the masts: who is responsible?" but the article does not answer the question. A little research on his part would have given him the answer - my Department, and specifically, my office.

It is correct for ComReg to state that it has no remit in the areas of planning or health; it provides measurement services which allow my office and members of the public to assess how individual sites have
performed against the relevant international guidelines.

The office of the Chief Technical Adviser in the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources maintains a watching brief on all matters connected with non-ionising radiation.

As such, I represent Ireland on the following international bodies: International Committee for Electromagnetic Safety; World Health Organisation International Project on Electromagnetic Fields; EU Joint Research Committee on Electromagnetic Fields.

I am also responsible for Ireland's implementation of the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines for exposure.

I have access to all the international work in this area.

I can state categorically that it has not been proven, through replicated studies, that exposure to non-ionising radiation at the levels specified in the ICNIRP guidelines causes any adverse health effects.

The international organisations above are charged with continuing research to try to establish any causal connection between non-ionising radiation and adverse health effects, and, as yet, none has been proven.

My office provides information and advice to organisations and members of the public in this area.

Since Mr Ryan has chosen to go public with his allegations, I can now state that this office has provided advice to Mr Ryan, his neighbours and the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers' Association; this advice has effectively summarised the results of all the international work in this area and concludes that there is no proven connection between the symptoms allegedly experienced by Mr Ryan and his family and
the specific transmissions from the mobile telephone installations close to his residence.

Officials in this Department familiar with the file are sympathetic to Mr Ryan's concerns; that is why this country commits significant resources to subscribing to the best and most up-to-date international research work in this area.

We are far from complacent. We sympathise with the Ryan family, but must state that there has been no proven connection between their symptoms and the mobile phone installations that they allege to be responsible. - Yours, etc.,

BOB HANNA, Chief Technical Adviser, Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Adelaide Road, Dublin."

Omega: this is simply not true. There are numerous reliable studies which prove the noxious effects to human health, animals and nature from pulsating microwave radiation. See under: http://www.buergerwelle.de/body_science.html

Mast campaigners furious over National Lib dem stance

While the mobile phone tower issue is relatively low key in Australia the issue is taking an interesting political direction in the UK with the telcos attempting to subvert the democratic system by running their own candidates in local elections. Old Dick Cheney would wonder what's the matter with that!

LIB DEM CALLS FOR REVOLT AGAINST LIB DEMS

Mast campaigners furious over National Lib dem stance

National Mast Campaign Mast Sanity is backing Birmingham residents, who are demanding that Phone Mast Public Relations guru Nicola (Nokia) Davies, the Lib Dem Hodge Hill candidate in this Thursday's Parliamentary by-election resigns, and that the Lib Dem leadership publicly condemn the present phone mast policy that Ms Davies has so often defended.

A campaign against the prospective Lib Dem candidate has been building up since her nomination, with local residents, and recently recruited Lib Dem Candidates furious that a candidate who, entrenched in the desire to override local wishes to install masts in the most inappropriate locations, is being whole-heartedly accepted by the national leadership.

Local Lib Dem's who are being backed by other Lib Dem members from across the UK are furious with the reactions of Charles Kennedy, Simon Hughes, Vince Cable and Mark Oaten MP, and other leading Lib Dems, and demand that they reverse their stance and distance the Liberal Democrats from this candidate.

Feelings are running so high within the rank and file membership of the Liberal Democrats that mast activists and recently recruited candidates from the thousands of campaigns against mobile phone and TETRA masts across the country are threatening to leave the Lib Dems for good. Fury was also vented against Ms Davies over the very damaging evidence that she presented to the high profile Winchester Mast Inquiry, which saw a totally inappropriately sited mast being installed close to a school that is now potentially harming the health of hundreds of children. She was also involved in 'community liaison' matter at a school in Boldmere, situated a few miles north of Hodge Hill, where her ability to smile as she lied was
demonstrated.

Lisa Oldham, Director Mast Sanity said, "It is appalling that the national leadership of the Liberal Democrats have backed this candidate in a situation which could easily have been put down as a local mistake. The national determination to install her as an MP in an area where the mast campaign is so huge and volatile, shows complete disregard for local resident's feelings and concerns.

We intend to lobby as many people as possible to make sure the Liberal Democrats realise all across the country that this is not acceptable and that Mobile phone masts are a huge political problem, that will come back to haunt them if politicians fail to take the concerns of those affected by insensitively sited masts seriously. The repercussions could be severe and will be reflected in this and forth-coming elections - and not just in Birmingham".

Amanda Wesley a recent Lib Dem candidate and a member of Mast Sanity said: "I am utterly disgusted at the attitude of the Liberal Democrat Party, and do not intend to accept the stance of the Party's leaders. The Lib Dems asked me to stand in the last election as a result of my involvement in opposing local insensitively sited masts, largely arranged by people like Nichola Davies. One of these I am still fighting, because T-Mobile and their 'community liaison' people manipulate, ignore, and speculate upon the law, ignoring it completely when they can't find a loophole. The Mast in Chipstead Road, which I am still fighting because TMobile and their 'Community Liaison' people fought and lost at planning but ignored all legal enforcements, was arranged by people like Nokia Davies.

I now see this as a total slap in the face to my colleagues and I, as well as the many other mast campaigners who were persuaded to stand for the Lib Dems. I now urge all people in this constituency NOT to vote Lib Dem. In my view, this woman should never have been selected as a candidate. I have made a point of not meeting her, having dealt with other such 'Community Liason' people. Members of the Lib Dems in Birmingham, and across the country need to send a firm message to the party, we will not stand by and allow our party to be taken over by those that are working against the interests of the communities they seek to represent."

Pamela Chapman a Lib Dem Councillor in Wales and also the Mast Sanity Parliamentary Lobby Coordinator said, " I am devastated by this irresponsible nomination. Councillors including myself will have to look long and hard at where are loyalties lie in this if the leadership insist on the Lib Dems supporting this woman."

Mast Sanity is urging other elected Lib Dems and ordinary members to show their disgust with their leadership, by taking part in a national 'wake' at 11am on Thursday, as Hodgehill goes to the polls to symbolize the demise of the Lib Dems so called stance against an inappropriate mast policy. It is suggested that many will want to also take part in burning of their membership cards.

Simmering masts row

Below is today's editorial from THE IRISH TIMES. The most recent posting on John and Rosie Ryan is archived at

http://www.buergerwelle.de/body_emf-omega-news_5-06-04.html.

By the way I incorrectly identified on that posting the form of elections we had in Ireland on Friday, June 11: it was a mid-term and not a general election.

"Simmering masts row

About 80 per cent of Irish people now use mobile telephones and the percentage is rising. That change in social and economic behaviour has been reflected in the growing number of base stations providing coverage and in a reduced level of local opposition to new masts.

Telecommunication companies should be careful not to jeopardise that developing harmony by adopting a narrow, legalistic approach to the concerns of Individuals. Extensive consultation and sensitivity to local disquiet will, in the longer term, pay better dividends than blunt resolve.

A wave of public protests accompanied the creation of the infrastructure for the second generation of mobile telephones, about four years ago. A Joint Oireachtas Committee held hearings into the potential dangers posed by the new technology and concluded there was no
definite scientific evidence to show that the level of non-ionising radiation emitted by the masts was damaging to health. Handsets were identified as being potentially more dangerous. At the same time, a British study found that some individuals could be particularly sensitive to radiation.

The case of the Tipperary farmer who wishes to break a legally-binding contract and have a base station removed from his land has become a cause célèbre in recent days, with support coming from both the IFA and the ICMSA. The individual complained he and his family became unwell because of radiation from the mast, but the company has declined to remove it unless it is compensated for the work involved. The emissions have been monitored on a number of occasions by ComReg, the telecommunications regulator, and certified as being within established international guidelines.

It is a difficult situation. The farmer is clearly distressed and believes radiation from the mast is affecting his health and that of his family. At the same time, the company paid him to have the facility placed there and its emissions have been within the legal guidelines.

In certain public controversies, the best solution is to walk away. While the company has science and the law on its side, public sentiment should not be ignored. The third generation of mobile telephones is about to be rolled out, requiring three times the number of masts that exist at present.

The Government hopes to raise €100 million over 10 years through leasing space on public buildings for such masts. Farmers in isolated rural areas could gain significantly. And the economic infrastructure would benefit. For that to occur, bridges must be built with the community and mobile phone operators must display greater flexibility and sensitivity to individual needs.

Mast row heads for appeal court

A battle over plans for a 25-metre mobile phone mast near three North Yorkshire schools is heading for the Court of Appeal, the BBC has learned.

Deputy prime minister John Prescott has decided to appeal against a High Court ruling allowing the mast in Harrogate.

Although an inspector rejected plans for the mast near St Robert's, Granby High and Woodfield schools, phone firms overturned this in the High Court.

The Appeal Court will be asked to give a landmark ruling on such plans.

Government challenge

Last month, Sir Richard Tucker ruled in the High Court that the proposals - by T-Mobile, Orange and Hutchinson 3G - met current safety guidelines.

The judge said the plans did not give rise to "actual danger", even though there was a "perception of risk" amongst the public.

Sir Richard quashed a previous planning inspectorate decision, saying that current government guidelines were concerned with "actual rather than perceived health risk".

But the government is challenging this interpretation of the guidelines, giving rise to a potentially landmark ruling.

Local anger

In a statement, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister said: "The Secretary of State has decided to appeal the judgment in the case of T Mobile v First Secretary of State and Harrogate Borough Council.

"The judgment is inconsistent with case law authority, (and) previous judgments clearly recognise that both actual and perceived health concerns are relevant considerations."

Campaigners had feared the earlier High Court decision would allow companies to ignore health fears and erect masts on sensitive sites in the future.

This ruling provoked anger from parents, teachers, Harrogate Borough Council and the town's MP, Phil Willis, who described it as "extraordinary".
