LOS ANGELES, November 9, 2004 - At 7:50 PM armored tanks showed up at an anti-war protest in front of the federal building in Westwood.

The tanks circled the block twice, the second time parking themselves in the street and directly in front of the area where most of the protesters were gathered.

Enraged, some of the people attempted to block the tanks, but police quickly cleared the street.

The people continued to protest the presence of the tanks, but after about ten minutes the tanks drove off. It is unclear as to why the tanks were deployed to this location.

Der Bundesausschuss Friedensratschlag fordert den Rücktritt des Verteidigungsministers Peter Struck. Die jüngsten Äußerungen des SPD-Politikers zum möglichen Einsatz deutscher Soldaten im Irak stießen bei der Friedensinitiative auf scharfen Widerstand. Zurückblickend habe sich Struck seit seinem Amtsantritt vor drei Jahren "zu einem gefährlichen außenpolitischen Torpedo im rot-grünen Kabinett gemausert.", so die Friedensinitiative. Als besonders "alarmierend" an Äußerungen Strucks gegenüber der Financial Times Deutschland (FTD) sei das politische Umfeld, in dem es entstanden sei.

Once more, this country faces a test over whether or not the Bill of Rights can withstand the concerted efforts of the government to destroy it. While mass mobilizations and demonstrations may only convey symbolic power, they do represent an important dissenting moment of expressive solidarity. Public dissent, therefore, is a crucial element in developing an empowered citizenry and an alternative vision of political life. Given what happened in New York during the Republican National Convention, we have to repeat at every occasion and in every place the shouts heard echoing through the streets of Manhattan: 'Whose Streets? Our Streets!
