July 22, 2004 Stockholm, Sweden - Lloyd Jones reporting for Australia's Herald Sun in Stockholm began a dispatch today:

"Homing pigeons vanish during race. Organisers of a race for homing pigeons were still scratching their heads in wonder today after about 1500 of the birds, famous for their ability to find their way home, went missing during the contest."


29,000 American White Pelicans Disappear

On May 28, 2004, the Bismarck, North Dakota office of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service began hearing that American White Pelicans were disappearing from the Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge north of Medina, North Dakota. Two and a half weeks later, 29,000 pelicans were gone without a trace.


Dying Flamingoes and Brown Pelicans

On July 15, 2004, the director general of Tanzania, Afria's National Parks (Tanapa), Gerald Bigurube reported: "The death of more than 10,000 flamingoes in Lake Manyara is a real tragedy and we are still puzzled with the cause and nature of the mysterious disease that has struck these beautiful creatures."


England's Bird Population Declines 33% in 25 Years

The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Canadian Wildlife Service reported this month that the duck population in the United States and Canada has dropped 11 percent in one year, largely linked to drought that has dried up water in duck breeding grounds.

The declines pinpointed by the report are most alarming in intensive farming countries such as the UK, where, between 1970 and 1999, skylark numbers declined by 52 per cent, the yellowhammer by 53 per cent and the corn bunting by 88 per cent.

Olympia und Tiere: Tierschützer befürcheten Tötungsaktionen von Straßenhunden für das IOC

Die griechischen Behörden standen bereits im Vorfeld der beginnenden Olympiade in der Kritik der Tierschützer. Der Grund: An den Olympiastätten sollten die dort lebenden Straßenhunde getötet werden. Der daraufhin einsetzende Protest hat dazu beigetragen, dass die Behörden von den ursprünglichen Plänen abgewichen sind. Die Hunde werden eingesammelt und in zentrale Auffangstationen gebracht. Jetzt aber bahnt sich die nächste Katastrophe an. Die Spielstätten und das Olympische Dorf sind eingezäunt, die Helfer kommen nun nicht mehr an die dort noch verbliebenen Hunde heran. Das IOC hat offenbar angeordnet, dass kein Hund an den Stätten zu sehen sein darf. Der Deutsche Tierschutzbund und der ETN befürchten nun, dass diese Erklärung eine kurzfristige Tötungswelle auslöst, die vom IOC toleriert werde...

U-Boot-Detektor stört Wale hunderte Meilen weit: Experten warnen vor Sonarattacke auf Sinnesorgane der Meeressäuger

Wissenschaftler haben Militärs erneut vor den Gefahren von Sonarsystemen für Meeressäuger gewarnt. Das neueste Sonarsystem, das U-Boote aufspürt, ist so laut, dass ein einziger Ton Tiere über eine Fläche von 3,8 Mio. Quadratkilometer stören könne, berichtet die Umweltgruppe Ecoterra. Die Militärs wissen, dass das rund 510 Mio. Euro teure System, das mit ultra-low-Frequenz arbeitet schon im Vorfeld zum Tod mehrerer Wale geführt hat. Forscher haben bewiesen, dass bei den Tieren Gehörsysteme stark beschädigt waren.

Tierschutz: Gericht untersagt Tierversuch unter Hinweis auf Staatsziel Tierschutz

Das Staatsziel Tierschutz (Artikel 20 a / Schutz der Tiere) zeigt Wirkung. Der 11. Senat des Hessischen Verwaltungsgerichtshof gibt jetzt ein Urteil bekannt, in dem ein Tierversuch u.a. mit Hinweis auf das seit 2002 existierende Staatsziel untersagt wird. (Beschluss des Hessischen Verwaltungsgerichtshofs, AZ 11 ZU 3040 / 03) Die Begründung: Die Versuche seien ethisch nicht vertretbar und es bestehe keine Notwendigkeit. Vorgenommen werden sollten Versuche an Ratten, um die Gewichtszunahme bei Menschen als Nebenwirkung bei Einnahme des Antipsychotikums Clozapin zu untersuchen. Der Deutsche Tierschutzbund wertet dieses Urteil als Durchbruch.

Stierkampf schadet dem Image: Barcelona spricht sich gegen den Stierkampf aus

Barcelona, eine der bekanntesten Städte Spaniens wagt einen revolutionären Schritt in Richtung Tierschutz. Der Stadtrat sprach sich im April gegen die Fortsetzung einer blutigen Tradition aus: Stierkampf soll in Barcelona künftig verboten sein da dies dem Image der Stadt schade. Das Deutsche Tierhilfswerk begrüßt die Entscheidung als einen Schritt in die richtige Richtung. "Dennoch erlebt das blutige Spektakel dieser Tage wieder seine Hochzeit", beklagt Judith Schmalzl vom Deutschen Tierhilfswerk. Alle für diese Saison in Barcelona geplanten Stierkämpfe finden statt...

Stop the kangaroo slaughter !!!

DO PEOPLE ACTUALLY REALIZE THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM UNTIL THE FIRST PRISONER OF HER MAYESTY ?

The largest massacre of land animals on the planet takes place in Australia each year. Millions of adult kangaroos are shot for their meat and skins (for luxury items such as soccer boots made by ADIDAS or souvenirs). Millions of orphaned baby joeys, "worthless" to the industry, are shot, stamped on, clubbed over the head or abandoned to die. In pouch joeys are routinely ripped from the pouch and decapitated, or bludgeoned to death. Occasionally they are shot. The joey at foot is normally left to starve or to meet death by predation. There is no record of numbers of joeys killed or left to starve. Nowhere else in the world are the young of wild animals treated with such blatant disregard for their suffering. In order to supply their commercial markets, the kangaroo industry continues the commercial kill even during the worst drought in living history. They target the biggest and best animals and kill those kangaroos who are essential in order to pass on their strong genes for the survival of the species. The industry is running out of large kangaroos and one kangaroo meat and skin processor has reported that “some skins we get are the size of a handkerchief”. The industry is now desperate to open up new areas where sizeable kangaroos can still be found. The NSW State Government had recently approved the expansion of the shooting zone into southeast NSW. This area contains some of the last undisturbed kangaroo populations with intact, complex family-structures and strong alpha males to ensure their survival.

It seems that the Kangaroo Industry has also succeeded in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). On Sunday night, the 11th of July 2004, Environment authority of ACT allowed commercial kangaroo shooters into the Googong Dam catchment area, a Fauna Reserve outside Canberra. Despite international outrage, during the following two weeks 800 kangaroos were slaughtered and also many joeys (babies). Animal rights activists had been at the dam each night to stop the massacre by creating a human shield. They managed to seriously disrupt the shooting, but were unable to prevent the eventual slaughter.

No reasonable community consultation has taken place. Environment ACT claimed the kangaroos were the cause of erosion and water contamination, when livestock from properties adjoining the dam are clearly the real culprits and runoff from the livestock dung is reaching the water. However, when this was pointed out, the authority changed tactics and suddenly claimed the kangaroos were starving, and so needed to be slaughtered. These kangaroos are NOT starving. There is plenty of dry feed on un-stocked properties and road reserves within easy reach of the dam.

Imagine the picture (just one of the scenes): ...Two shooters are in a 4WD truck with the heater going full bore. The night is black, and like most nights at the Dam, the temperature is below zero, with some nights the area experiencing rain and sleet or snow on adjacent mountains.The shooters spotlight and shoot female kangaroos. They shoot a female, drag a joey out of the dead mothers pouch, cut it’s head off or bash it’s head in, as required by the Code of Practice, then throw it aside. Any ex-pouch joeys still dependant on their mother, flee in panic into the night to eventually die of exposure. The mother kangaroo is gutted and hung on the side of the truck. The shooters jump back into the warm truck and drive on looking for more kangaroos......dollars beckon…..

This "management of our so called ‘protected wildlife’" is a cruel and gruesome blood bath for a fistful of dollars, the kangaroo is well and truly betrayed…

Die IWC in Sorrento ist vorbei. Die Unterstützung, die wir in dieser Zeit von unseren Förderern erhalten haben, war großartig. Im Namen der Wale möchten wir Ihnen heute ein Lob aussprechen und uns bei Ihnen bedanken.

Mit Freude können wir Ihnen auch mitteilen, dass wir auf der diesjährigen IWC (International Whaling Commission) wichtige Siege errungen haben. Wir konnten Einfluss bei wichtigen Entscheidungen nehmen. Dass wäre ohne die Hilfe unserer Förderer nicht möglich gewesen.

* Der IFAW hat es geschafft, die korrupte Stimmenkauf-Politik von Japan aufzudecken. Mit Ihrer Hilfe in Form von Briefen und Spenden haben wir diesen Skandal öffentlich gemacht. Für jede Pro-Walstimme auf der IWC hat Japan kleineren Ländern Entwicklungshilfe angeboten und massiv Druck auf sie ausgeübt. Diese Vorgehensweise wurde kontrovers auf der IWC diskutiert und wurde von der internationalen Presse mit großem Interesse aufgegriffen.

* In diesem Jahr hat Japan erneut eine Aufhebung des Walschutzgebiets "Southern Ocean Sanctuary" angestrebt. Dieser Antrag wurde jedoch mit großer Mehrheit abgelehnt. Das Schutzgebiet "Southern Ocean Sanctuary" umfasst die Gewässer um die Antarktis und soll für etwa drei Viertel der weltweit verbliebenen Großwale einen langfristigen Schutz von Nahrungsgründen garantieren.

* Die IWC war sich einig, dass die Grausamkeiten der Waljagd auch bei zukünftigen Treffen thematisiert werden müssen. Sie hat außerdem beschlossen, das grausame Fangmethoden nicht länger toleriert werden können und es das Ziel sein muss, sie zu stoppen.

Gemeinsam mit Ihrer Hilfe konnte der Versuch, den kommerziellen Walfang wieder einzuführen, gestoppt werden -vorerst.

Wir haben diesen Kampf gewonnen, aber es werden weitere folgen. Japan und Norwegen werden weiter auf eine Erhöhung der Walfangquote drängen und sich für die Abschaffung des Schutzgebietes einsetzen. Der Stimmenkauf muss aufhören - kein Wal darf aus kommerziellen Gründen getötet werden. Wir müssen neben Island auch weitere Länder versuchen zu überzeugen, dass der Wert lebender Wale weit aus höher ist als getötete Tiere.

Wir konnten bereits enormen Einfluss nehmen. Um noch mehr an Bedeutung zu gewinnen, müssen wir größer werden und uns zusammenschließen. Wir müssen mit einer vereinten Stimme sprechen. Nur so können wir eine Zukunft sichern, in der die Natur erhalten bleibt und sowohl Tiere als auch Menschen gleichermaßen von ihr profitieren können.

Ich möchte Ihnen nochmals für Ihre Rückendeckung in der Vergangenheit danken und Sie bitten, uns auch in Zukunft weiter zu unterstützen. Die letzten Wochen haben gezeigt, welche Resultate erreicht werden können, wenn man mit einer vereinten Stimme spricht. Ich bin mir sicher, wir werden auch die weiteren Schritte gemeinsam meistern.

Take a look at just a few of the victories you helped win at last week’s critical International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting:

* Your letters and contributions helped IFAW expose the corruption of Japan’s “aid-for-whaling votes” scandal. The story of Japan using development aid to recruit and influence small nations to vote pro-whaling was widely covered by international press – and hotly debated at the IWC itself.

* Japan’s proposal to abolish the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary was defeated by a wide margin. The Southern Ocean Sanctuary provides long-term protection to around three quarters of the world's remaining whales.

* The IWC agreed that the inherent cruelty of whaling is an issue that needs to be addressed. The IWC stated that cruelty from whaling can no longer be tolerated and action should be taken to stop it.

With you leading the way, the push to resume full-scale commercial whaling has failed — for now.

We have won this battle, but not the war. Japan and Norway will continue to push for higher whale catches and the destruction of sanctuaries. The vote buying must end – whales are not for sale. And we must convince countries like Iceland that whales are worth much more alive than dead.

Together as one, we can have more influence than the self interests of a select few. You’ve had a huge impact already, and the more we grow, the more we can ensure a future that benefits both animals and people without sacrificing our natural heritage.

So I want to thank you for all you’ve done … and urge you to continue your support. Last week is a great example of the difference you can make as part of a unified voice against animal cruelty, and I know you’ll be right there with me the rest of the way.
