Former President Bill Clinton said the government "failed" the thousands of people who lived in coastal communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina
There is so much about Katrina available on the internet, much of it the best reporting we have seen for years, that I've decided to have this special edition to try to get at least some of it out to you.
First, those wonderful columnists that we have the good fortune to see in the main stream as well as online media: Arianna Huffington, Maureen Dowd, Molly Ivins, Paul Krugman, Jack Palast, and many others. Michael Moore also sent out one of his great commentaries in the shape of an open letter to Bush. Then there are others like Tom Engelhardt, David Sirota, etc.
As the Bush administration tried desperately to put a good front on it by, of course, smearing someone else, rumors were spreading like the proverbial wild fire. Someone claimed that there were people who shot to kill people coming to help. Turns out the people who shot to kill were people who were SUPPOSED to be protecting the construction crews.

"Our government failed those people in the beginning, and I take it now there is no dispute about it," Clinton told CNN. "One hundred percent of the people recognize that -- that it was a failure." ( See interview -- 2:32 )
He and former President George H. W. Bush have launched the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund to help raise money for those left homeless by the storm.
Clinton is just the latest in a long line of critics who have blasted the federal government for not moving fast enough to help people in the immediate aftermath of Katrina, which slammed into the Gulf Coast one week ago as a Category 4 hurricane. What the hell was Bill Clinton thinking, standing there next to President Bush and providing verbal cover for the administration's ludicrous claims that the problems plaguing New Orleans were unforeseeable?
He even defended the administration's catastrophic response to Katrina. When asked on CNN whether the federal response was fast enough, Clinton bobbed, weaved, and fell back on this utterly absurd claim: "You and I are not in a position to make any judgment because we weren't there." C'mon, Bill, "...we weren't there"? I know this sucking up business is hard, but you've got to do better than that. [...] Read the rest at The Huffington Post: http://tinyurl.com/cg8rr
