Military Families May Once Again Lead Us out of War

In Vietnam itself, the mostly working-class American military of that era made its opposition to the war increasingly clear as the fighting dragged on. By 1972, the military was in shambles.

Who Will Say 'No More?'

Former Senator Gary Hart says he wants a leader who is willing now to say: "I made a mistake, and for my mistake I am going to Iraq and accompanying the next planeload of flag-draped coffins back to Dover Air Force Base. And I am going to ask forgiveness for my mistake from every parent who will talk to me."

A voice from the Arctic Refuge

For most of us, protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil development is a matter of principle. But for the Gwich'in people who live in the Arctic and depend on the caribou herd, it is a matter of survival.

Matthew Gilbert of the Gwich'in community is blogging at the NRDC Action Fund this week and next. I hope you won't miss this chance to hear directly from a member of the community whose fate is tied to the Arctic Refuge.

http://blog.nrdcactionfund.org/

Here's a short excerpt from Matthew's Monday blog:

"The fact that it's even a question whether we should drill in a pristine place like the Arctic Refuge, the breeding grounds of Polar Bears, the Porcupine Caribou Herd, and many bird species, is an ethical travesty of our time. The world is realizing fossil fuel is becoming more and more scarce and its costs to the earth more expensive. We Gwich'in of Alaska pay $5.00 a gallon and are getting hit the hardest, but we know our environment is far more important. Even in a time of energy shortage, we stick to our belief: complete protection of the Refuge's Coastal Plain to ensure the survival of the Porcupine Caribou Herd."

I hope you'll visit us daily this week and next as Matthew writes about what it was like to grow up in the Arctic, the role of nature in Gwich'in culture, the place of the caribou in his community's life, and many other fascinating topics. Please join us at:

http://blog.nrdcactionfund.org/

And if you find it worthwhile, please tell your friends and colleagues to pay us a visit, too!

Knocking on Bush's doors from Crawford to the White House

August 24, 2005

CODEPINK has been supporting Cindy Sheehan in Crawford, Texas since she began her vigil over two weeks ago. We have been on the ground in Crawford, planning support vigils in our communities, and sending love and support through the CODEPINK website. Finally, the tide is turning against this war, and now is the time to take advantage of the momentum.

If you can make it to Crawford for the last weekend of Cindy's vigil, you'll see history in the making. But whether or not you come to Crawford, make your plans now to join us September 24-26 in Washington, D.C. for the largest anti-war mobilization since the war began. We plan to gather under the United for Peace and Justice banner to say:

End the war in Iraq, bring the troops home now Leave no military bases behind Let the Iraqis, not US companies, rebuild Iraq Stop the torture Stop bankrupting our communities No military recruitment in our schools Weekend highlights:

·We'll kick off the weekend with an action on Friday afternoon and then we'll join CODEPINK DC at their weekly vigil outside the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. On Saturday, we will be part of a massive rally, march, concert and peace festival. We'll also be part of the weekend-long Green Festival at the DC Convention Center, where you can learn about green businesses, buy fair trade products, and attend lectures by progressive leaders like Cindy Sheehan, Amy Goodman and CODEPINK co-founders. On Monday we will join in the anti-war lobbying on Capital Hill in the morning, and in the afternoon we will participate in the non-violent direct action at the White House, where we plan to deliver the reasons (onemillionreasons.org) we've collected from all over the world telling Bush why we should get out of Iraq. Join us in D.C. for this historic weekend. Click here to learn more about the mass mobilization and to volunteer. If you can't join us, don't forget to visit onemillionreasons.org so we can take your reason to get out of Iraq to the White House. Encourage your friends to submit their reasons as well. With so many of us knocking on the White House door, this is one 'focus group' George W. won't be able to ignore.

In solidarity from Camp Casey and around the nation,

Peter Schneider / Pressearbeit /Dokumentation

Recommendations for Accommodations

People with chemical and/or electromagnetic sensitivities can experience debilitating reactions from exposure to extremely low levels of common chemicals such as pesticides, cleaning products, fragrances, and remodeling activities, and from electromagnetic fields emitted by computers, cell phones, and other electrical equipment.

The severity of sensitivities varies among people with chemical and/or electromagnetic sensitivities. Some people can enter certain buildings with minor accommodations while others may be so severely impacted that they are unable to enter these same spaces without debilitating reactions.

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other disability laws, public and commercial buildings are required to provide reasonable accommodations for those disabled by chemical and/or electromagnetic sensitivities. These accommodations are best achieved on a case-by-case basis.

Reasonable accommodations for a chemically sensitive and/or electromagnetically sensitive individual can include providing a space or meeting area that addresses one or more of the Cleaner Air criteria, upon request, such as

* Require cell phones and computers be turned off

GCAP Global Call to Action against Poverty

On 10 September, ahead of the UN Summit, people across the world will unite in the second GCAP mobilization - to demand that world leaders Wake-Up to Poverty. Thousands of people will be holding breakfast meetings with politicians, all night vigils, rallies outside state buildings, jamborees, petitions and early morning press calls. World leaders will literally be waking-up to the voices of people demanding action to end poverty before they depart for the UN Summit. These actions will be mirrored in New York on 14 September, the opening day of the Summit, with a stunt including alarm clocks to 'Wake-up' the delegates. Millions of people will also be wearing white bands - the symbol of the campaign - to show their solidarity for an end to poverty.

President Bush's Watergate

Could It Be Bush's Watergate?

Karl Rove's favorite president is Richard Nixon. Thomas Pauken wonders what a twist of fate it would be if Rove were driven from power as Nixon was over what both men would consider trivial matters - the leaking of a CIA employee's name to reporters by Rove in 2004, and the Watergate break-in of the Democratic headquarters at the instigation of Nixon campaign officials in 1972.

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/082305M.shtml

President Bush's Watergate

Last Friday we witnessed an explosion, an event that, like Watergate, will shape politics and the way we see government in America for years to come. This is a solemn time, and gives us a moment to remember what men can do when they abuse the power given to them by our nation. The first indictment was handed down in the investigation initiated by the CIA, and "Scooter" Libby, the right-hand man of the Vice President, faces five counts of perjury and obstruction of justice in connection with a profound betrayal of national security -- the outing of a covert CIA agent.

Karl Rove remains under investigation, and as Republican Senator Trent Lott put it this weekend, "If this is going to be ongoing, if he has a problem, I think he's got to step up, and, you know, acknowledge that and deal with it." It's easy to forget that President Bush long ago promised to fire anybody involved, a promise that undermines White House credibility every day Rove continues to work there.

The desperate spin and attacks from the Republicans have already begun, and we must remind America of the facts behind this case, and what makes these indictments so monumentally important. We've put it all into a video; we are asking you to watch it and spread the word by forwarding it to everybody you know:

Watch the Video.
http://whatcounts.com/t?ctl=F97F92:4092A66

If there is a silver lining of these events, it may be that, in the future, all will know they cannot abuse their power with impunity while they sit in the White House. It is nothing short of tragic to learn that those sitting there now would sacrifice the safety of an American patriot and mother who risked her life to protect her country from the very threats over which this same Administration led us to war.

It is a frantic moment in history, but it is also a moment for reflection. I am even sadder to see the Republicans do not view it that way. They are now carrying out the intentions they announced last weekend: to trivialize the charges against Libby and the importance of honesty and truth in our justice system.

This is unconscionable and it cannot stand - we have put together this video to make sure it doesn't. I think you will find it powerful, so please watch it. But it will only help set the record straight if you spread the word to your fellow citizens - please take that extra step to stop the shameless Republican spin before it gets off the ground.

Watch the Video.

John Roberts and Enemy Combatants

By Chris Floyd

08/19/05 "Counterpunch" -- -- The United States long ago ceased to be anything like a living, thriving republic. But it retained the legal form of a republic, and that counted for something: as long as the legal form still existed, even as a gutted shell, there was hope it might be filled again one day with substance.

But now the very legal structures of the Republic are being dismantled. The principle of arbitrary rule by an autocratic leader is being openly established, through a series of unchallenged executive orders, perverse Justice Department rulings and court decisions by sycophantic judges who defer to power - not law - in their determinations. What we are witnessing is the creation of a "Commander-in-Chief State," where the form and pressure of law no longer apply to the president and his designated agents. The rights of individuals are no longer inalienable, nor are their persons inviolable; all depends on the good will of the Commander, the military autocrat.

George W. Bush has granted himself the power to declare anyone on earth - including any American citizen - an "enemy combatant," for any reason he sees fit. He can render them up to torture, he can imprison them for life, he can even have them killed, all without charges, with no burden of proof, no standards of evidence, no legislative oversight, no appeal, no judicial process whatsoever except those that he himself deigns to construct, with whatever limitations he cares to impose. Nor can he ever be prosecuted for any order he issues, however criminal; in the new American system laid out by Bush's legal minions, the Commander is sacrosanct, beyond the reach of any law or constitution.

This is not hyperbole. It is simply the reality of the United States today. The principle of unrestricted presidential power is now being codified into law and incorporated into the institutional structures of the state, as Deep Blade Journal reports in an excellent compendium of recent outrages against liberty.

For example, on July 15, a panel of federal appellate court judges upheld Bush's sovereign right to dispose of "enemy combatants" any way he pleases, the Washington Post reports. In a chilling decision, the judges ruled that the Commander's arbitrarily designated "enemies" are non-persons: neither the Geneva Conventions nor American military and domestic law apply to such garbage. Bush is now free to subject anyone he likes to the "military tribunal" system he has concocted - a brutal sham that some top retired military officials have denounced as a "kangaroo court" that will be used by tyrants around the world to "hide their oppression under U.S. precedent."

One of the kowtowing jurists on the appeals panel was none other than John G. Roberts. Four days after he affirmed Bush's autocratic powers, Roberts was duly awarded with a nomination to the Supreme Court. Now he will be sitting in final judgment on this case - and any other challenges to Bush's peremptory commands. This is what is known, in the tyrant trade, as "a safe pair of hands."

The ruling by Roberts and his fellow Republican jurists ignores the fact that the Geneva Conventions - which lay down strict guidelines for the handling of any person detained by military forces, regardless of the captive's status - have been incorporated into the U.S. legal code, as Deep Blade points out. They cannot be abrogated by presidential fiat. And anyone who commits a "grave breach" of the Conventions - by facilitating the killing, torture or inhuman treatment of detainees (e.g., stripping them of all legal status and subjecting them to rigged tribunals) - is subject to the death penalty under American law.

This is why the Bush Faction labored so mightily to advance the absurd fiction that the Geneva Conventions are somehow voluntary - while simultaneously promulgating the sinister Fuhrerprinzip of unlimited presidential authority. The fiction was a temporary sop to the crumbling legal form of the Republic, a cynical perversion of existing law to keep justice at bay until the Fuhrerprinzip could be firmly established as the new foundation of the state.

It doesn't matter anymore if the president's orders to suspend the Conventions, construct a worldwide gulag, torture captives, spy on Americans, fabricate intelligence and wage aggressive war are illegal under the "quaint" strictures of the old dispensation; the courts, packed with Bushist cadres, are now affirming the new order, the "critical authority" of the Commander, beyond law and morality, on the higher plane of what Bush calls "the path of action."

This phrase - with its remarkable Mussolinian echoes - was incorporated into the official "National Security Strategy of the United States," promulgated by Bush in September 2002. That document in turn was drawn largely from a manifesto issued in September 2000 by a Bush Faction group whose members included Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz and Jeb Bush. Their plan, often detailed here, envisioned the transformation of America into a militarized state: planting "military footprints" throughout Central Asia and the Middle East, invading Iraq (even if Saddam Hussein was already gone), expanding the nuclear arsenal, massively increasing the defense budget - and predicating all these "revolutionary" changes on the hopes for "a new Pearl Harbor" that would "catalyze" the lazy American public into supporting the militarist agenda.

This agenda is designed, the group said, to establish "full spectrum dominance" over geopolitical affairs, assuring control of world energy resources and precluding the rise of "any potential global rival" that might threaten the unchecked wealth and privilege of the American elite. The rule of law could only be a hindrance to such a scheme; hence its replacement by the Fuhrerprinzip and the "path of action."

There has been virtually no institutional resistance to this open coup d'etat. It's now clear that the American Establishment - and a significant portion of the American people - have given up on the democratic experiment. They no longer wish to govern themselves; they want to be ruled, by "strong leaders" who will "do whatever it takes" to protect them from harm and keep them in clover. They have sold their golden birthright of American liberty for a mess of coward's pottage.

New mast battle brews

Harborough Today (Leic)

A SECOND phone company has applied to put up a 15-metre high mast near an historic Kibworth landmark.

Villagers campaigned in March against an application from Orange for an 18-metre mast 250 metres away from 17th century Grade II listed Kibworth Windmill at Windmill Field, Langton Road, Kibworth Harcourt. Now, Hutchison 3G has submitted an application to Harborough District Council for a 15-metre mast 90 metres away from the village landmark. Protester Beverley Burdett, of Marsh Drive, Kibworth, said: "We will definitely round up the troops for another protest. We will not let them try and get permission without a fight. "If they can put a man on the moon why can't they find a better place to put these phone masts?" The wooden tower proposed has three antennae and three transmission dishes connected to it. Hutchison 3G says the mast is needed to provide mobile phone coverage for its customers. It is believed the windmill was built in the early 1600s although its main post has a carving dated 1711. In the application Hutchison 3G said: "We have carefully designed a solution to blend in with the farm setting and maximise the use of natural screening." It says the mast will not affect the view of the windmill as it will be screened by conifer trees. The Orange application was thrown out by councillors in May because they felt the siting and appearance would adversely affect the character and appearance of the rural landscape.

Documented lies in planning application

http://www.edinburghsucks.com

It seems that lies have been told to the planning department the therefore to the planning committee of the City of Edinburgh Council. The main difference is that the lies were documented and proof is now posted here in the form of the photograph to the left.

The photograph shows the erection of a vodaphone mast on top of Jewel & Esk Valley College. Local residents had asked that the mast that now sits ready to fry the brains of the children attending Brunstane Primary and Nursery schools as the 14.7 meter mast sits only 190 meters from that school. T-Mobile and their agents Marconi had told the planning department in their statement that the college would not withstand any more masts. Whoops….. porkie-pie!

What actually happened was that t-mobile didn’t like the rent charged by the college so our helpful council happily stepped in to help this multi-national company and provided the land at cut price. News coming in to EdinburghSucks!com put the rental cost for the Vodafone mast in the photograph at £6000 per year for this rental.

The story continues, although the mast got planning permission, t-Mobile and their agents Marconi didn’t like where they got planning permission so decided to move the mast closer to the primary and nursery school. Council planning official Mr. Moonie visited the site and has reported to the planning committee that the mast should stay where it is, and not move it to where it actually has planning permission.

Is T-Mobile so poor nowadays that they are unable to pay market rent for their masts then when they don’t put them in the right place they can’t afford to move them away from the primary and nursery school? If indeed they are in financial trouble - why is the council helping them and not the school pupils who are the children of the people who vote for them.

Councillors from the planning committee are visiting the site on Thursday 25th August before making a decision on the mast moving. Let’s hope they work for their constituents ans not a huge multi-national company. PLEASE.

Contact Kerry to Stop Recount CourtCase Withdrawal

Last week we sent an email asking you to contact Senator John Kerry urging him not to withdraw from the Ohio recount case pending in federal court in Ohio. Since then, many of you have taken action and have voiced your concern to Senator Kerry. Thank you. Your voices are critical in the ongoing struggle to protect the right to vote. Some friends have responded by asking for further information or have suggested that the fight in the Ohio recount case is no longer worthwhile. We write to address these concerns.

Is Senator Kerry planning to withdraw from the case?

While not yet confirmed by Senator Kerry, Congressman Conyers and others have received credible information that Senator Kerry is preparing to withdraw from the recount case. Today, Congressman Conyers posted the letter we referred to last week on his blog (click on the word "wrote" in his blog statement to access the original letter): http://www.conyersblog.us/

Next Tuesday, August 30, Senator Kerry's lawyer will need to appear before Federal Judge Carr in Toledo, along with the other lawyers in the recount case. We will know by that point whether Senator Kerry intends to stay in the case. We may know earlier if he seeks to withdraw by filing papers doing so. What we know today is that your pressure is having an impact and we must keep it going. Please continue to call/email/send letters to Senator Kerry urging him to remain in this case and to join the amended counterclaims. Here again is Senator Kerry's contact information: http://www.johnkerry.com/contact/

Is fighting the Ohio recount case still worthwhile?

The struggle for the right to vote includes the struggle to ensure that all votes are properly counted. A recount is the procedure for doing that. If election officials resist our right to a meaningful recount conducted in accordance with basic constitutional standards, they trample on our right to vote. Senator Kerry must not withdraw from the Ohio recount case.

What is at stake in the Ohio recount case is whether recounts in federal (presidential and congressional) elections will be conducted in accordance with basic equal protection and due process as guaranteed by the US Constitution or whether they will receive the same kind of sham recount received in Ohio in December. For a fuller understanding of all of the serious violations that occurred during the recount in Ohio last December, see the amended counterclaims filed by David Cobb and Michael Badnarik at:
http://www.nvri.org/about/ohio_cobb_badnarik_counterclaims_123004.pdf. These amended counterclaims raise major constitutional concerns. David Cobb and Michael Badnarik are to be congratulated for continuing to press this fight for all of us. Senator Kerry should continue to stand by their side.

Thank you for all you are doing to ensure that recounts matter and that all votes are properly counted.

Keep on,

Tim Carpenter Director, PDA

COMING BACK TO CRAWFORD

By Cindy Sheehan
The Huffington Post
August 24, 2005

http://tinyurl.com/d4n5t

I'm coming back to Crawford for my son. As long as the president, who sent him to die in a senseless war, is in Crawford, that is where I belong. I came here two and a half weeks ago for one reason, to try and see the president and get an answer to a very simple question: What is the noble cause that he says my son died for?

The answer to that question will not bring my son back. But it may stop more meaningless deaths. Because every death is now a meaningless one. And the vast majority of our country knows this. So why do more young men and women have to die? And why do more parents have to lose their children and live the rest of their lives with this unbearable grief?

The presidency is not bigger than the people's will.

And when the people speak out, it's the president's reponsibility to listen. He is there to serve us, not the other way around.

This isn't about politics. It's about what is good for America and what's best for our security and how far this president has taken us away from both.

I'm coming back to Crawford because -- now and forever -- this is my duty for my son, for my other children, for other parents, and for my country.

BUSH: NO PLANS TO MEET ANTI-WAR PROTESTER

Fox News
Tuesday, August 23, 2005

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,166516,00.html

DONNELLY, IDAHO - President Bush said Tuesday he strongly supported the right to protest the war in Iraq, but said those who want American troops to withdraw immediately were "advocating a policy that would weaken the United States."

The president also said he had no plans to meet Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a soldier slain in Iraq who has galvanized the anti-war movement with her a vigil outside Bush's Crawford, Texas, ranch.

"I think immediate withdrawal from Iraq would be a mistake," he said. "I think those who advocate immediate withdrawal from not only Iraq, but the Middle East, are advocating a policy that would weaken the United States."

Bush was speaking to reporters at an impromptu question-and-answer session outside the Idaho resort where he is vacationing. He plans to speak to National Guard members at an Air Force base near Boise Wednesday.

Bush did meet with Sheehan in June 2004, two months after her son Casey was killed. At the time, Bush kissed her on the cheek, and the pictures were posted on the Sheehan family Web site. They have since been taken down.

From Aug. 6 to Aug. 18, Sheehan led about 100 protesters who set up what they dubbed "Camp Casey" outside Bush's ranch.

They vowed to stay there until Bush returned to Washington in September, but Sheehan was forced to go to Southern California last week after her mother suffered a stroke.

"I appreciate [Sheehan's] right to protest," Bush said Tuesday. "I understand her anguish. I met with a lot of families. She doesn't represent the view of a lot of the families I have met with, and I will continue to meet with families."

The president added that his national security adviser and a deputy chief of staff also met with Sheehan "early on."

Bush has scheduled more than two hours Wednesday to meet with family members of slain soldiers at the Mountain Home Air Force Base near Boise, Idaho.

A counter-protest, supporting Bush's policies in Iraq, has been organized to counter Sheehan's vigil and related demonstrations.

The caravan of the "You Don't Speak for Me, Cindy" started in Vacaville, Calif., Sheehan's Northern California hometown, and planned to travel through Southern California, Arizona and New Mexico until it reaches Crawford on Saturday...

BUSH BACKERS IN CALIF START CARAVAN TO COUNTER SHEEHAN PROTEST

By Kathleen Hennessey
Associated Press
Tuesday, August 23, 2005

SACRAMENTO - Anti-war activists clashed with a members of a caravan protesting Cindy Sheehan, the anti-war mother who gained national prominence during a vigil outside President Bush's Texas ranch.

Conservative activists and military families embarked on a tour Monday that they call "You don't speak for me, Cindy!" They rallied in Sheehan's hometown of Vacaville, the state capital and other California cities as they make their way to Crawford, Texas.

"It's time to lay down the anger. We need to continue to uphold those people over there, to uphold those men and women with their boots on the ground," said Deborah Johns of the Northern California Marine Moms, who helped organize the caravan, which is sponsored by Move America Forward, a Bay Area-based group.

Sheehan began a protest vigil Aug. 6 on the road leading to Bush's ranch, an act that has encouraged anti-war activists to join her and prompted peace vigils throughout the country. Sheehan's 24-year-old son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, was killed last year in Iraq.

A verbal confrontation erupted when the caravan arrived in Sacramento and was met by anti-war protesters chanting "Bring them home."

Sheehan supporter Dan Elliott, 71, confronted caravan members by waving a sign reading "Death is not support" and heckling Johns as she addressed the crowd.

"You are ruining the morale over there," responded Greg Parkinson, a Bush supporter.

Some caravan members called the anti-war protesters communists and said they were "aiding and abetting the enemy." Those comments enraged Sheehan supporter Dee Ann Heath, who said she has two sons serving in Iraq and another preparing to leave.

"I don't support the war, but I support my sons," she said. "I simply want them to come home."

In Vacaville, Toni Colip, 50, said her son, David, went to high school with Casey Sheehan and is now in the Army, although not in Iraq. She said her son opposes Sheehan's activities and has asked her to support his military service even if he is injured or killed.

"He said, 'Don't dishonor me, don't walk on my grave,'" Colip said.

The pro-Bush caravan plans to join fellow supporters who have set up their own camp in downtown Crawford as a reaction to the Sheehan-inspired vigil. Bush was in Salt Lake City on Monday, where he spoke to a national veterans group to rally support for the war.

Sheehan vowed to remain in Texas until Bush agreed to meet with her or until his monthlong vacation ended Sept. 3, but she flew to Los Angeles last week after her 74-year-old mother had a stroke. She is expected to return to Texas in a few days.

Several of those in the caravan said they understood Sheehan's anger but disagreed with her protest.

"This is not the way to honor her son," said Lori Judy, 49, of Vacaville, whose son, Tim, served in Iraq.

Meanwhile in Crawford, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, visited the anti-war inspired "Camp Casey" near Bush's ranch, lending support and words of encouragement to several families whose loved ones died in Iraq.

"It is time to bring our troops home," Lee said. "What we want to do is give America a sense that it's OK to speak up and ask questions."

Across from "Camp Casey," about eight people were gathered at "Camp George" in support of the president. Parrish Stevens, of Indiana, said people need to know all of the positive things that are happening in Iraq because of the troops ‹ such as hospitals opening and children attending school. Stevens is on break as a contractor in Iraq.

Earl Johnson, of Seattle, asked what would happen to the women and girls in Iraq if American troops left.

"The consequences of their proposal are not dealt with at all," Johnson said.

Meanwhile, folk singer Joan Baez and actress Margot Kidder showed up to talk with some of the families gathered at a pair of anti-war camps near Bush's ranch.

"I came in support of Cindy and all the other Gold Star families," said Kidder, who traveled to the site from Montana. "I couldn't not come."

Gold Star Families for Peace was co-founded by Sheehan and is made up of relatives of fallen soldiers.

Ugly acts of desperation

Joe Conason
Salon.com
August 2005

The right has hit new depths with its scurrilous and idiotic attacks on Cindy Sheehan, a politically inexperienced mother in deep pain.

Like Max Cleland and John Kerry, the decorated Democratic veterans who endured vicious lies about their service because they dared to oppose President Bush, Sheehan has learned that the proof of her patriotism doesn't matter to the bullies of the Republican right. Forming an electronic mob, these so-called conservatives don't hesitate to rough up war heroes and Gold Star Families for Peace mothers in a manner that would once have been simply unimaginable in American politics. Cindy Sheehan Breakthroughs, Unbridgeable Divides, and Taboos Unbroken

By David Swanson

AfterDowningStreet.org

The Washington Post today wondered out loud whether Cindy Sheehan might be a "catalyst for a muscular antiwar movement." In translation, this is an assertion that Cindy Sheehan has already become an accepted reason for the corporate media to finally acknowledge the existence of, and consequently help to build, the antiwar movement. There has, of course, been a major anti-war movement longer than there has been a war. And Cindy Sheehan has been speaking eloquently at anti-war events for many months. What has changed is primarily the media.

A website called Blue Oregon noticed this yesterday and wrote: "the Oregonian appears to be using Cindy Sheehan as cover to mention the lies upon which the war was justified." Yes, the Oregonian used the L word:

"The misty scrim that obscured our view of the war -- wishful thinking, distortions, outright lies -- is rapidly dissolving. Americans increasingly see the war as it is, and know it's going badly. Little wonder that when a gold-star mother parks herself inconsolably in Crawford, Texas, asking hard questions and spurning glib answers, she strikes a nerve." Essay on death and President Bush

E.L. Doctorow
August 15, 2005
Not in Our Name web site

I fault this president (George W. Bush) for not knowing what death is.

He does not suffer the death of our twenty-one year olds who wanted to be what they could be.

On the eve of D-day in 1944 General Eisenhower prayed to God for the lives of the young soldiers he knew were going to die. He knew what death was. Even in a justifiable war, a war not of choice but of necessity, a war of survival, the cost was almost more than Eisenhower could bear.

But this president does not know what death is. He hasn't the mind for it. You see him joking with the press, peering under the table for the WMDs he can't seem to find, you see him at rallies strutting up to the stage in shirt sleeves to the roar of the carefully screened crowd, smiling and waving, triumphal, a he-man. He does not mourn. He doesn't understand why he should mourn. He is satisfied during the course of a speech written for him to look solemn for a moment and speak of the brave young Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. IT IS NOT AN HONORABLE THING TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM IN A -- NUCLEAR! --ATTACK ON A PEACEFUL COUNTRY THAT NEVER HAS ATTACKED US!!!!!!!!!!!! ON THE CONTRARY, THE -- ONLY -- HONORABLE THING, IS TO OPPOSE SUCH AN ATTACK WITH EVERYTHING IN ONE'S POWER! Saying you're sorry, AFTERWARDS, as so many Viet Nam Veterans have done, IS TOO LATE -- especially, when the attack is NUCLEAR!!!!!! The consequences of a NUCLEAR attack, will be felt by Iranians, AND people of the surrounding countries, for many, many GENERATIONS to come -- in the form of radiation sickness, birth defects, poisoning of the land itself, etc.

NO-ONE CAN SAY ANYMORE, THAT SUCH A GROSS CRIME BY BUSH AND THE NEO-CONS -- IS "UNTHINKABLE"!!!

We MUST stop this future war against Iran, by stopping people from fighting in it -- making it a DIS-honorable, instead of an "honorable", thing to do, to fight or participate in any way in such a war. IT IS NOT AN HONORABLE THING, TO BE A PART OF AN INVADING ARMY! AND, IT IS NOT AN HONORABLE THING, TO BOMB HELPLESS AND INNOFFENSIVE PEOPLE FROM THE AIR!

Bush & Co., want to NUKE Iran, rather than be bogged down in a land war as in Iraq. All he needs for that, is a small elite group of Air Force Pilots, and their support personnel. It is a VERY TALL ORDER, I know, but the ONLY LOGICAL THING TO DO, is to EMPHASIZE TO THESE COMBAT PILOTS, THAT IT IS A -- DIS-HONORABLE -- thing they are being asked to do, NOT an "Honorable" one in any sense of the word whatsoever! Their own mothers and fathers must dis-own them!!!!!

Years later, like Viet Nam Veterans, some may write their memoirs, or go re-visit the scene of their crimes, and feel deep regret and guilt, and say to the survivors that they are sorry, as a large number of Viet Nam Veterans have done. THAT WILL NOT BRING BACK A SINGLE SHATTERED LIFE!!!!!!! It will do NOTHING, to de-contaminate the PERMANENT poisoning of the land, of the air, and of the water, of the area -- probably extending even FAR BEYOND Iran itself. ALL TO BE A HIRED MERCENARY SO THAT THE BUSH AND SAUDI INTERLOCKED FAMILIES CAN GET EVEN RICHER THAN THEY ALREADY ARE, AND ROB THE AMERICAN PEOPLE OF EVEN THEIR LAST DIME????????

We CAN'T say now, that we "don't know". And, knowing, that puts us under the obligation to do everything in our power, to STOP the loss of innocent life in Iran, that OUR SOLDIERS WILL BE DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR, if we allow them to go and to fight over there, as if they were nothing but mindless, soulless robots -- WHICH THEY ARE NOT!!!!!!!

OUR SOLDIERS WILL BE ASKED TO GO OVER TO IRAN, TO FLY OVER IRAN PERHAPS, AND DROP NUKES AND/OR CONVENTIONAL WEAPONS -- OR LAND MINES, OR POISON GAS, OR BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS -- AND WE CANNOT SAY THAT THEY ARE "BRAVE" AND THAT IT IS PERFECTLY OK WITH US THAT THEY "DO WHAT THEY ARE TOLD"! No matter HOW much they are being PAID to take innocent lives!!!!!!!!

IT IS NOT OK, NOT HONORABLE, THESE DAYS TO BE A SOLDIER IN THE EMPLOY OF G.W. BUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT THESE DAYS!!!!!!!

It is not ok, to PRETEND that a soldier is nothing but a mindless, soulless robot, when they are NO such thing; and, pretending that, leads DIRECTLY to the soldiers' mental illesses and high rate of suicides, domestic abuse, and violent crime, when they return to civilian life, and try to cope, psychologically, with what they have done, seen others do, and have been DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR DOING. If they WERE mindless robots, they WOULDN'T be having these reactions.

There IS resistance within the military, to Bush and his absurd and criminal orders he gives as Commander-in-Chief. Resistance as high as the level of the Generals. We don't hear much about it of course. It is covered up as much as possible; but, every once in a while, a bit does get thru.

That shows us, that some, and probably MANY MORE soldiers than we ever hear of, DO HAVE A SENSE OF HONOR -- A SENSE OF HONOR THAT LEADS THEM TO RESIST AND REFUSE -- NOT -- TO "MINDLESSLY OBEY"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To obey, under THESE circumstances, means, to PUT ASIDE one's sense of honor -- and, to NEVER GET IT BACK AGAIN!!!!!!!!

For attacking Iraq, we were lied to, and all-too-many believed those lies.

THERE IS NO LIE THAT BUSH COULD POSSIBLY TELL US, THAT WOULD JUSTIFY A NUCLEAR ATTACK ON IRAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Therefore, "believing lies" is NO LONGER AN EXCUSE FOR TAKING DIS-HONORABLE AND ANTI-HUMAN ACTION!!!!!!!!!!!

Do not let the men and the women who will serve as Bush's mercenaries in the next war, believe for one single moment, that what they are doing is right and honorable. It is not. George Bush is not an honorable Commander-in-Chief. There is NO WAY, that serving under a man like THAT, could EVER be construed, as in ANY way an honorable service. Carrying out the CRIMINAL COMMANDS of a Commander like that, is in itself a Criminal Act. It is morally NO BETTER, than being a hit man or a hit woman, for the chief of a Criminal Syndicate. Not in ANY WAY a better thing. And, deep down inside, OUR YOUNG MEN AND YOUNG WOMEN IN THE MILITARY -- THEY KNOW THIS!!!!

Barbara T. -- and, I stand behind every word of what I have just written.

An investigation into the vector ellipticity of extremely low frequency magnetic fields from appliances in UK homes

The biological effects of EM field ellipticity have been getting a closer look recently. Ellipticity is a measure of how much a field's direction of polarization curves in space. This is mostly likely another reason why those with ES have different reactions to different field sources even at similar average fields strengths. I'm submitting this email to continue building our archive of scientific reviews and assist those who use this group's collective experience and findings for research.

-Beau

ps. Note, it was found that ovens, both standard and microwave, generated fields with very high ellipticities compared to other appliances. This could explain those who are affected by a standard oven even at low field strengths.

An investigation into the vector ellipticity of extremely low frequency magnetic fields from appliances in UK homes*

Abstract: Elliptically polarized magnetic fields induce higher currents in the body compared with their plane polarized counterparts.

This investigation examines the degree of vector ellipticity of extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MFs) in the home, with regard to the adverse health effects reportedly associated with ELF-MFs, for instance childhood leukaemia.

Tri-axial measurements of the magnitude and phase of the 0–3000 Hz magnetic fields, produced by 226 domestic mains-fed appliances of 32 different types, were carried out in 16 homes in Worcestershire in the summer of 2004. Magnetic field strengths were low, with average (RMS) values of 0.03 ± 0.02 µT across all residences. In contrast, background field ellipticities were high, on average 47 ± 11%.

Microwave and electric ovens produced the highest ellipticities: mean respective values of 21 ± 21% and 21 ± 17% were observed 20 cm away from these appliances.

There was a negative correlation between field strength and field polarization, which we attribute to the higher relative field contribution close to each individual (single-phase) appliance. The measurements demonstrate that domestic magnetic fields are extremely complex and cannot simply be characterized by traditional measurements such as time-weighted average or peak exposure levels. We conclude that ellipticity should become a relevant metric for future epidemiological studies of health and ELF-MF exposure.

Today's "safe" radiofrequency (RF) exposure limits DON'T protect human health near transmitters!

MARJORIE LUNDQUIST (1), The Bioelectromagnetic Hygiene Institute

Maxwell's theory implies that electromagnetic (EM) radiation carries both energy and momentum. The momentum may have both linear and angular contributions; angular momentum [AM] has a spin part associated with polarization and an orbital part associated with spatial distribution. Any interaction between radiation and matter is inevitably accompanied by an exchange of momentum. This often has mechanical consequences ..."(2)

Voluntary consensus standards [ANSI C95; NCRP; INCIRP] protect human health from most thermal [energy transfer] effects, but no standards yet exist to protect health against athermal [momentum transfer] effects, though laboratory transfer of spin AM was reported by 1935 (3) and of orbital AM by 1992 (2) for an optical vortex [tip of Poynting vector (PV) traces a helix about the beam axis].

In the far field of a dipole RF transmitter, radiation is linearly polarized (minimal spin AM) and locally approximated by a plane wave (zero orbital AM), but in the near field the orbital AM is non-zero [tip of PV traces an ellipse(4) in air] implying an athermal hazard [e.g., rain tumors in cellular phone users] against which no standard now in use anywhere in the world protects!

Abstract Submitted for the MAR05 Meeting of The American Physical Society Sorting Category: 18.3 (T)

A half-century ago physicists missed a major public service opportunity, costing the human race widespread chronic illness and many deaths!

MARJORIE LUNDQUIST, Bioelectromagnetic Hygiene Institute

Radar -- pulsed microwave (MW) radiation -- helped the Allies win World War II but health concerns soon arose. Alerted to a syndrome resembling mild radiation poisoning, (1) a worried M.D. surveyed radar-exposed workers, finding a high incidence of internal bleeding, (2) leukemia cases in 600 radar operators, 2 brain tumor cases in a 5-man MW research team and many complaints of headache. He sent his report (2) to the Pentagon in 1953.

Alarmed Navy officers convened a meeting (3) [mostly of electrical engineers (EEs)] to identify a safe level of MW exposure for servicemen. Biophysicist Herman Schwan attended, playing a major role in establishing 10 mW/cm2 as a thermally safe MW exposure limit. The IEEE became sole sponsor of ANSI C95 [an early health standard for radiofrequency (RF) exposure] with negative long-term consequences for human health!

I review RF health standards development since 1953, comparing what physicists might have done, had they -- not EEs -- had this responsibility! [See also my technical abstract.]

Thousands Protest Bush, Iraq War In Salt Lake City

Monday 22 August 2005

With the message that people can protest a war while supporting troops and veterans, a handful of speakers -including a Gold Star mom - addressed an anti-war rally in Salt Lake City Monday, the same day President Bush was in town.

Bush spoke to more than 6,000 people at the annual convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, while three blocks away about 2,000 people gathered to protest Bush administration policies and the war in Iraq.

Barbara Wright, 56, drove five hours from her home in St. George to attend the rally at Pioneer Park.

"There's a lot of reasons I'm unhappy. Predominantly due to the war, but also about the economy, Social Security," Wright said.

Her father, a World War II veteran, was unable to come with her, but she said he would have come along for the same reasons.

"So I'm here for him too," she said.

Several people attending the protest boasted that they were from military families or had served in the armed forces.

Salt Lake resident Hugh Musser, 74, said he was a Korean War veteran who came to the protest because of "the lies about this war and the reasons we went into it."

"I'm so opposed to our administration. I'm not politically motivated, I'm an independent. I think we have really lost our democracy," Musser said.

The featured speaker was Celeste Zappala, a co-founder of Gold Star Mothers for Peace with Cindy Sheehan, who made news camping outside Bush's Crawford, Texas, ranch in hopes of meeting with the president.

Zappala's son, Spc. Sherwood Baker, 30, was killed in Baghdad on April 26, 2004. He was a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard which was deployed to help provide security for a survey group looking for evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, she said.

Zappala said she was overwhelmed by the number of people who showed up at Pioneer Park.

"I expected and hoped that 100 people would come out. This place is overflowing with patriotic Americans," she said.

She said she has traveled over the past 16 months speaking out about the war because of a promise she made at her son's funeral.

"My sweet and noble son was the 720th American soldier to die in the hideous miscalculation called the war in Iraq," Zappala said. "I vowed to him I will not be quiet."

Zappala and members of her family have spent the last week in Crawford, she said, hoping the president would take time to answer one question from families who have lost loved ones in the war.

"What noble cause is it? What noble cause is it that has taken the lives of our best Americans? What noble cause is it this month?" Zappala said. "Why do the architects of this war not risk the lives of their children?"

One of the event's organizers, Aaron Davis with a group called Veterans for Peace, said he filed a permit for a gathering of
1,000 people. Thirty minutes into the three-hour event Monday, he said he knew there would be that many and more.

"Not only is our message today support our troops and bring them home now, but treat them right when you bring them home," said Davis, who said he served as a Marine from 1972 to 1976.

Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson, who called for a strong showing from Utahns at the protest in an e-mail he sent last week to local activists, addressed both the VFW convention and the protest.

Anderson was booed in his speech to the veterans at the Salt Palace Convention Center about two hours before Bush's speech. After, he said challenging political leaders is being supportive of the troops.

"The message we want to send is that we are behind our troops, we care very much about our troops. That if their lives are going to be put on the line, they are going to be put in harm's way, that we're told the truth and our nation hasn't been told the truth," Anderson said.

Chants of "Rocky!" followed Anderson as he took the podium at the anti-war rally.

"Those who take a stand ... who stand up to deceit by our government. Those are true patriots. You are true patriots," Anderson said.

Protests Greet President Bush on Arrival in Salt Lake City By Glen Warchol The Salt Lake Tribune

Tuesday 23 August 2005

Salt Lake City Mayor Mayor Rocky Anderson adresses the audience at a peace rally at Pioneer Park. (Jim Urquhart/ The Salt Lake Tribune)

A confrontation in front of the Salt Palace Convention Center Monday between pro-Bush veterans and war protesters started out with jeers and competing chants, only to end with both groups singing "God Bless America."

The incident, in the conservative bastion of Utah, supported activists' claim that a new and stronger anti-Iraq war movement has begun. This peace movement has made patriotism, flag-waving and support for the troops part of its rhetoric.

Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson, who called for demonstrations against President Bush when he visited the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention, picked up the theme, both in his welcoming speech to the veterans and to peace activists two blocks away in Pioneer Park.

"We can debate, as we should in a free country, the decisions of our political leaders," Anderson told the VFW conventioneers, many who booed him. "But we must always support without wavering, and be grateful toward, our men and women in the armed forces."

After that, Anderson's comments received nothing but cheers, even as he defended his right to protest.

At the peace rally, Anderson told about 2,000 activists, "We are grateful for what [veterans] have sacrificed for our country and our freedom."

But, "Our nation was lied into war," he said.

"You are true patriots for being here today," he said, referring to the criticism of his call for protests of the president's visit.

Activists were overjoyed at the turnout in Pioneer Park, around the convention center and along the president's motorcade route. It was the largest Utah demonstration against the war since an estimated 2,500 gathered at the Capitol before the Iraq invasion.

"This is a turning point for our nation - here today in Salt Lake City," Anderson said.

Still, not everyone was impressed by the protests or Anderson.

"They have the right to protest," said Bruno Dyszczakowski, a VFW conventioneer from Wisconsin gesturing toward the pickets. "But for a public official to call for demonstrations-that's wrong. It's a slap in the face to all vets. Impeach Rocky Anderson!"

George Coles, a Korean War vet from Illinois, mused: "They couldn't do that if we hadn't fought for their rights. They make me ashamed."

Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, who accompanied the president, said the president saw the protesters along the motorcade route.

"[Bush] got a chuckle. He said 'Look, look at all the middle fingers.' Frankly, we ought to show respect to the office and the person regardless of what party they come from."

Dyszczakowski said the visiting vets would not hold the demonstrators or the mayor against the city, which has hosted the VFW national convention three times. "You can't condemn a city because [of its] mayor."

The climax of the anti-war rally was the appearance of Gold Star Families for Peace.

Philadelphia resident Celeste Zappala's son Pennsylvania National Guard Sgt. Sherwood Baker was killed in Iraq in 2004. "When he finally made it home, I knelt down by his grave and I vowed to him I would not be quiet. If I save another family from from what my family has been through, I will have been successful."

Supporting the troops while opposing the war can be a difficult balance. Debbie Johnson, of West Valley City, is the mother of a soldier who served eight months in Iraq. She and her son disagree on her stand on the war and she would not divulge his name or unit for fear of retaliation against him.

"It broke my heart that he thought I was taking a stand against him- I couldn't make him understand the difference," Johnson said of her anti-war activities.

Sheryl Ginsberg, an activist with Democracy for Utah, has a nephew who is a Marine serving in Iraq.

"We're proud of him," Ginsberg said. "He's a warrior, but he's being used for political reasons. It's a tragedy."

In his welcome to the VFW, Anderson criticized Washington, D.C., politicians for not providing U.S. soldiers better equipment and for contemplating cuts in veterans health benefits.

"You honor us by your presence," Anderson told the vets, and, while not receiving the standing ovation that the other speakers enjoyed, the mayor received 10 seconds of applause, this time without boos.

Tribune reporters Matt Canham, Joe Baird and Heather May contributed to this story.

Sequel to 911 intended to trigger martial law in the USA and to unleash war on Iran?

IAHF List: Someone on the IAHF list whose judgement I trust just forwarded these 3 articles to me wanting my input. This individual, who lives in Boston, has a long history as a health freedom and also as a peace activist and his gut instincts may not be wrong.

He thinks we could soon see a "sequel" to 911 intended to trigger martial law in the USA and to unleash war on Iran.

I sure hope he's wrong, and I'm not trying to scare anyone or be an alarmist, but I do want to alert all of you on the IAHF list to these 3 articles which I hope you'll at least read with open minds.

Ignore them if you want to, or take action on a basis of them if you feel compelled to- but please keep one thing in mind:

An August 8th Washington Post article (see below) just announced that Northern Command HQ has just gone public with detailed plans involving the declaration of Martial Law in the event of a nuclear or biological attack(s) on US soil.

I live in a border town, and am fully aware that our borders are more porous than swiss cheese. Anyone and anything could easily cross them on foot at any time, making the "security screening" at aiports a total joke.

What my friend and I both want to know is this:

Through this Washington Post article- could the government be trying to psychologically prepare us for an event which the Necons themselves intend to unleash as a sequel to the SCAM known as 911? (see http://www.reopen911.org/

PLEASE READ:

Then- Please Read this: Its very rare, perhaps UNHEARD OF for a 4 Star Army General to be Fired based on allegations of sexual misconduct. Could there be something a lot DEEPER going on?

This army general was in charge of the base in South Carolina scheduled to hold a "drill" pertaining to a supposed possible terrorist attack involving a nuclear warhead stolen off a ship in Charleston SC- could this "drill" actually be a planned REAL EVENT a la 911? Many analysts have some good reasons for suspecting this might NOT be a mere "drill" and that this General might have been fired because of plans to try to WARN US ALL and to stage a COUP to DEFEND THE USA from Bush and the Neocons: PLEASE READ:

If some oily SCAM is indeed AFOOT, maybe if enough people forward this, it WON'T HAPPEN because the people planning it might fear getting nailed. We can only hope the situation Alex Jones has envisioned above does NOT happen, because if it DOES happen, Codex will be the LEAST of our problems in both the USA and the WORLD.

Its been IAHF's contention for some time that Codex is just one small part of a much larger genocide agenda. Current world population is 6.5 Billion. Most Demographers are predicting a rise to 15 Billion + by mid century. Powerful forces are reputed to want to radically cull our numbers. To do so, they'd need to trigger off some profound events intended to unleash a huge number of casualties.

Could 911 have only been a drill leading up to even worse, more spectacular events?

Lets hope our concerns are groundless. Lets hope Alex Jones is completely wrong in his article here Four Star General Fired For Organizing Coup Against Neo-Cons? http://www.infowars.com/articles/terror/nuclear_terror.htm

I, for one, totally oppose the Neocons and regard them to be Trotskyites. They're trying to start Armageddon, right now. Stock up on whatever you think you might need including potassium iodide, because the 4th Reich which is running Amerika right now will stop at nothing to manufacture consent for an attack on Iran, including exploding a suitcase nuke or two or three in one or more major cities in the USA.

In an August 1 article for the American Conservative, retired CIA officer Phillip Geraldi revealed that Vice President Dick Cheney has directed Strategic Command (STRATCOM) to prepare contingency plans for a nuclear first strike on Iran, in the event of another 9/11 style terrorist attack upon the United States...and went on to say the strikes were “not conditional on Iran actually being involved in the act of terrorism directed against the United States

Lorraine J.
12:13 PM The Islamic Republic of Iran, the Eastern hub of Bush's "Axis of Evil" has always been the prime threat...and the prime target of this administration's Middle Eastern crusade of liberating oil and installing "democratic" control of the region. With it's land mass four times that of Iraq and it's population of
68,000,000, three times greater (half being considered "radically fundamentalist", compared to the Sunni insurgency in Iraq which encompasses only twenty percent of that country's population of
26,000,000,) a "Shock and Awe" air strike, followed up by a ground invasion would be doomed to the same style of resistance, only on a much larger scale.

From the beginning, it was obvious to me that, although a daunted prize on it's own, Iraq was, more importantly, situated on the Western flank of Iran and its capture would effectively close the perimeter "noose" of U.S. bases that now surround that country.

Beginning several months ago, reports of U.S. aircraft flying reconnaissance missions into Iranian airspace, along with other reports of U.S. Special Forces and Israeli commandos, including Iraqi Kurds and Iranian exiles of the Mujahideen-e-Khalq
(MEK), covertly penetrating Iranian territory to "mark" target sites, could only mean only one thing. We're going!!!

Only last February, Scott Ritter, a U.S. Marine Gulf War veteran and UNSCOM weapons inspector in Iraq, during the nineties
(who tried to tell the American public that Iraq had no WMDs and was rebuked as a "traitor" for his trouble), told an audience in Olympia, Washington that President Bush had already received and signed off on plans for air strikes on Iran. He said the strikes could begin as early as June.

More recently (July 27), Lyndon La Rouche issued an international alert for the month of August, as being the likely time for the U.S. to stage a tactical strike, with Congress adjourned for vacation and Bush chopping cedar brush in Crawford, leaving Cheney as the "maestro" of Washington. La Rouche also identified reports from congressional, military and intelligence sources confirming that these are not just contingency plans but have operational "intent". It is even said that senior Air Force planners are truly appalled at what's happening but are going forward with the planning of this unprovoked, nuclear strike, because they are not willing to overtly object, at the risk of losing their positions.

CONPLAN 8022, part of the doctrine of preemptive nuclear war which was originally conceived by Cheney, Wolfowitz, and Libby
(when Cheney was Secretary of Defense under George H.W. Bush) has already placed the relevant "mini-nukes" under the control of military theater commanders. If this wasn't enough to worry about, on January 5th of this year, Congress quietly passed the
(unconstitutional) "Doomsday Legislation" that allows for only a handful of the elected legislators to be able to create or change laws in time of natural disaster, contagion, attack by another nation.......and yes, that would include TERRORIST ATTACK! Therefore, not only is this administration prepared to go nuclear, in the event of another "terrorist" attack...but they are in position to use such an attack to "restructure" things, at home, too.

The fact is, I always presumed this administration would nuke North Korea, to avoid another costly war on the peninsula...but after seeing the failures of Iraq, I now have no doubt that we will deploy low-level nuclear weapons against Iran's hardened bunkers, deep below the ground, and we will also use conventional weapons against other targets in a massive bombing campaign that will proceed the invasion. As the 4th Infantry and the 101st Airborne are once again rotating "to Iraq", allowing another "overlapping" of forces as we saw during the elections, plus having other forces already stationed in the surrounding countries, the invasion of Iran may well be imminent.

Lorraine J.
12:17 PM

While the world is watching media reports of Rumsfeld going berserk over the Iranian production of shaped charges, designed to kill U.S. troops in Iraq...and the reports of Iran's final refusal to curtail the enrichment of uranium, our leaders are preparing for nuclear war. All they need now is one more big terrorist attack upon U.S. soil.

Is that the sun, rising over Iran?

Has the Revolution Begun?

by Down the Middle

Russian Intelligence analysts are said to be reporting that an apparent coup is taking place in the United States and one of the top coup leaders, General Kevin P. Byrnes was relieved of his command, after an investigation into what Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld labeled "misconduct". Almost immediately, speculation began frothing out of the corner of the "Media Monster's" mouth that the charges were probably "sexual" misconduct, slandering General Byrnes to the American citizenry before any investigation is made public or any defense can be mounted.

The claim is being made that large numbers of military forces are being moved within the continental United States, while forces loyal to the coup are being redirected to Iraq, getting them out of the country, and Bush loyalist forces prepare for Martial Law, here at home.

Speculation about a coup rests with the recent story of the preplanned nuclear strike on Iran, as retaliation for large a "terrorist" attack, within the United States. Many analysts, foreign and domestic, believe such a strike would actually trigger World War III.

UPDATE: Wednesday, August 15, the United States military begins the training exercise, "SUDDEN RESPONSE" with the scenario of terrorists smuggling a "back-pack" nuke into the U.S., via Charleston harbor...and detonating it.

With multiple reports of all military leaves being canceled, beginning September 7 and the recent firing of four star General Kevin Byrnes, said to be involved in a coup to stop the exercise from "GOING LIVE", as is said to have happened with other "false flag" attacks, during the "exercises" of 9/11 and 7/7, could this "exercise" lead to an "incident" requiring nuclear retaliation and invasion of Iran?

The Cover-Up Congress

For many of us watching a White House shrouded in secrecy, viciously smearing political opponents, and increasingly disconnected from the heartbreaking reality of American casualties in an ill-planned war, it is difficult not to be reminded of Richard Nixon and the Watergate era.

Indeed, Nixon White House Counsel John Dean has already penned a book about the Bush Administration entitled "Worse than Watergate." So how has the Bush Administration managed to get off scot-free where the Nixon Administration collapsed?

The answer is simple: We have a cover-up Congress.

Help Us End the Cover-Up Congress Now.
https://secure.dccc.org/coverupcongress/?id=08232005_jl_dc3f

From the beginning, the Bush White House has claimed the war in Iraq as their exclusive purview: neither Congress nor the American public had any right to criticize, question, or even know about poor pre-war planning.

Congressional Republicans followed in lockstep with the White House. Even as scandals erupted from every corner, they insisted that Congress provide no oversight, demand no answers, and continue writing blank checks for the Administration.

This is just a brief list of wartime scandals that are being covered up - and that a Democratic Congress would promptly get to the bottom of:

* Alleged manipulation of intelligence on Iraq by the White House.

* Allegations against Halliburton and other corporate schemers who appear to have cheated the American taxpayer.

* The role of top Administration officials in prisoner abuse from Abu Ghraib to Guantanamo Bay.

* The apparent diversion of resources from hunting Osama bin Laden to invading Iraq before notifying Congress.

* Misleading assessments of projected costs on veterans' benefits.

* The alleged exposure of a covert officer in retaliation for her husband's whistle blowing on White House intelligence manipulation.

Every American - Republican, Democrat or Independent - deserves answers to these questions. It would seem that the Republicans will do everything they can to keep the truth from us.

Do you want the truth? Support the DCCC today and elect Democrats to the House.

Help Us End the Cover-Up Congress Now.

Democrats would subpoena any document and put any person under oath until the American people discover what was done in their name and with their hard-earned tax dollars.

We need a Democratic majority to get the truth. You can help make that happen now.

Help Us End the Cover-Up Congress Now.
https://secure.dccc.org/coverupcongress/?id=08232005_jl_dc3f

For so many Americans, Watergate became the template of a White House scandal. Some might reasonably ask, if the White House has behaved so disgracefully, why aren't televised hearings being beamed into our living rooms every night like they were then?

Why are we not getting answers? Because Republicans don't investigate Republicans.

And this is where the importance of the majority comes into play. The party that controls Congress can open hearings and subpoena evidence of unethical and potentially unlawful behavior.

Republicans certainly abused this power during the Clinton Administration - they spent $17 million on more than 50 politically motivated investigations from 1995-1998, including 140 hours of testimony on whether the Clinton White House misused its holiday card database.

How many documents and hours of testimony have congressional Republicans requested to find out who leaked Valerie Plame's name to the press to smear her husband? 0.

Imagine a Congress where instead of investigative power being held by Tom DeLay's rubber stamps, it is held by great Democratic heroes like Henry Waxman, Louise Slaughter, and John Conyers. We need a Democratic Majority if you want to be told the truth and end the cover-up.

We can end the Cover-Up Congress only with your help - show them that democracy is alive and well in America:

Help Us End the Cover-Up Congress Now.

Chemtrails - Out Of The Closet

Chemtrails are out of the Closet

08/17/05

Nearly seven years after extensive "lay downs" of lingering and spreading white plumes were first reported smearing skies over across North America, Europe is in an uproar and Washington could be close to coming clean about chemtrails.

At least the Bush White House will soon have a legitimate weather control agency to finally "launder" one of the biggest cons ever perpetrated.

Introduced in the U. S. Senate on March 1, A. D. 2005, SB 517 calls for a U. S. "Weather Modification Advisory and Research Board" to officially commence operations in October 2005. When passed as expected, this law will make large-scale chemical alteration of the atmosphere legal across a formerly free and beautiful land called America.

It's already happening.

Less than two weeks before the bill was introduced, Linda wrote from "up here in the mountains of northeast Georgia" of the worst spray day she had ever seen. "Not one day in the past two months have we had a blue sky with normal clouds," Linda wrote. Even normal clouds "are 'laced' with whatever the hell is coming out of those white planes that have no engine sounds, even when they fly low enough to see there is no printing anywhere on the planes." Several years ago the US Air Force stated that it was repainting its silver aircraft white, and retrofitting its jet tanker fleet with "hush kits" to silence their engines.

DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THE WEATHER

Whatever fresh environmental disaster SB 517 accomplishes, this bill will ease the way for admission of a project suspected by many and confirmed by air traffic controllers at America's biggest airports. When and if the U. S. public demands that their government "do something" about the extreme weather pummeling their neighborhoods, Washington will be able to officially reply, "We are."

Intended to "develop and implement a comprehensive and coordinated national weather modification policy," the board is tasked with coordinating state and federal weather modification efforts. It's direct mandate is stepped-up research and development aimed at developing experimental "models, devices, equipment, materials, and processes" to change or control, "by artificial methods" the development of clouds and/or precipitation in the troposphere. This weather-forming region of the atmosphere lies between the Earth's surface and the Stratosphere, starting around 35,000 feet.

The federal weather modifiers will now directly oversee the cloud-seeding operations currently being carried out over dozens of states to increase rain and snowfall for irrigation, electrical power and winter recreation purposes. As droughts intensify under an onslaught of moisture-absorbing chemicals dispensed behind ozone-destroying jet tankers, and future towns wash away in sudden flash floods triggered by rain-inducing atmospheric tinkering, these unnatural disasters and other "inadvertent" effects of weather modification will be closely "studied" by the newly created board.

But no studies have been released on the implications of wide-scale alteration of regional atmospheric heat balances.

Large-scale weather modification is banned under the United Nations Environmental Modification Convention signed by Washington in A. D. 1970.

CHEMTRAILS A. D. 2005

Meanwhile, recent heavy "chemtrail" spraying over Portland, Oregon and Canada's west coast has eased off once again. Another long-time chemtrail "hot zone", Santa Cruz, California continues reporting clear blue skies unmarked by the chemplanes' ugly scrawl.

As recently as May A. D. 2005, a Swiss resident sent photographs to Meria Heller's website, reporting: "Today was one of the heaviest spraying in Switzerland ever."

Some Canadians also have their eyes wide open. in June A. D. 2005, large graffiti spray-painted on a major overpass in West Vancouver advised motorists: WAKE UP, LOOK UP, CHEMTRAILS ARE EVERYWHERE.

AIR FORCE INSIDER DESCRIBES WEATHER MODIFICATION MISSIONS

An active duty air force insider has described environmental combat missions already being flown by specially-outfitted C-130 Hercules transports, which can be reloaded, refueled and re-launched in just 10 minutes to continue their assault on violent storms afflicting U. S. communities. Flown by regular air force pilots, these "science flights" include onboard meteorologists, who painstakingly log the results of each mission.

Big storm fronts and hurricanes require a vast amount of absorbent chemicals to reduce their destructive power. To achieve the fast turn-around times needed to complete their missions, flights of returning C-130s taxi to a stop and immediately commence refueling as the empty onboard spray canister is removed, as soon as the empty canister is clear of the aircraft, a waiting truck wheels a semi-trailer-size container of sky-seeding chemicals to the plane's lowered rear ramp, where it is slid inside on rails like a gigantic "soda dispenser".

The air force insider added that other spray missions spread (barium) chemtrails to facilitate 3D radar mapping of the entire continental United States. He also said that the air force has been spraying storm fronts "for a long time". The military's main interest, he added, is experimentation aimed at gaining control of the weather for military use.

Did the Air Force spray this year's first Caribbean hurricane, in which the western quadrant disintegrated just before making its Texas landfall? "There's no reason they wouldn't," the Air Force insider replied.

But C-130 turboprops would not necessarily be used to try to influence hurricanes that typically release more energy than all atomic arsenals combined. Referring to the 757s-767's recently modified for aerial spraying, the Air Force insider told willthomas.net, "We've got them, but I can't talk about them."

He added that many people in the Air Force "are aware of William Thomas" and his reporting on chemtrails. The Air Force insider confirmed that this reporter "has it mostly right" concerning the application and purposes behind chemtrails. But would not elaborate on my reporting.

EUROPEAN CHEMTRAIL UPROAR

Meanwhile, the chemtrails controversy has taken Europe by storm following a series of articles by Swiss freelance journalist Gabriel Stetter in the German popular science magazine Raum+Zeit (Space and Time), circulation circa 50,000.

Stetter's first article, "White Skies" created a public relations nightmare for Greenpeace when it informed readers in January 2004 how "Thousands of people were thoroughly shocked when they realised, and were informed by Greenpeace in Germany, Switzerland and Austria that-for some reason or other - Greenpeace has no interest in the chemtrail question whatsoever."

The Swiss government also came under public pressure to explain the checkerboards being painted in its skies. On March 5, 2004 the Environment Department in Berne, Switzerland responded to an inquiry by Rudolf Rechsteiner, a Social Democratic member of parliament, admitting that "A number of ideas exist that show how it would be possible to reduce global warming by technical means, at least in the short term."

But these ideas, the government office hastened to add, "are no more than theoretical. We are not aware of any practical application of these methods, either at home or abroad."

Ten days later, Greenpeace Switzerland climate and transport expert Cyrill Studer wrote an internal memo assuring colleagues that while he had "heard of the chemtrails phenomenon," for the present, Greenpeace "will not be following up the theme of chemtrails."

Two reasons for inaction by Greenpeace climate change activists were given. First, Studer explained, "There is not a sufficiently solid scientific basis" for Greenpeace to risk its budget and reputation verifying this "supposed phenomenon". To do so, he added in his memo to Greenpeace staff, "would overstretch our capacities. Important elements of our climate campaign would suffer, particularly the promotion of energy efficiency and of renewable energies, or our active influence in present-day politics."

But outside Greenpeace's corporate offices, the controversy continued. On June 11 German Greenpeace spokeswoman Kristine Läger told concerned constituents:

The idea of reducing global warming by putting chemicals in the atmosphere has been around a long time. There are various proposals in this direction, suggesting the chemicals should be independently sprayed and that they should be mixed with the fuel of ordinary passenger aircraft. Whether in Germany such proposals have reached the point of actual realization is highly questionable.

So far as we are aware there are no indications from research and observation of weather and climate that these so-called chemtrails exist. Nor are we aware of any project that has been realized in practice, in all probability this is not happening.

But Gabriel Stetter believes that the Greenpeace "Rainbow Warriors" know all about the rainbows in the sky. They probably also know of geo-engineering studies to reduce incoming sunlight and slow global warming issued by the National Academy of Sciences. "And they may even have taken a look at the Welsbach Patent," he writes. "But they have no idea what conclusions to draw from the chessboard pattern suspended in the Hamburg sky or the aluminium-enriched 'rainbows'.

"Supposing the word 'chemtrails' appeared in print in the Greenpeace Magazine," Stetter speculates. "How many tens of thousands of people more would look up into the sky and recognize that the supposedly utopian "proposal" has long moved on via "spraying trials" to a systematic, long-term spreading of cloud cover over the whole of Europe?"

Back in Basel, Gabriel Stetter quoted unsourced opinion polls showing that in this "stronghold" of chemtrails believers, one in ten people "have already heard of them despite the media blackout. Several thousand people in the prosperous town at the bend in the Rhine know that the chemtrails phenomenon suggests that something is seriously wrong."

Among these Swiss chemtrails activists, he explained, "are well-to-do people, who because of their environmental awareness have been for a long time, in some cases for decades, members of Greenpeace."

Not any more.

"Veteran anti-nuclear activists, campaigners for animal welfare or against electrosmog, in their alarm, they had all turned to Greenpeace because of the chemtrails, which are visible everywhere in the skies above Basel. But a painful experience awaited all of them. They were palmed off with the same unsatisfactory answers that we have by now grown tired of hearing.

The consequence drawn by these elderly, well-to-do activists from Greenpeace's lack of interest was the immediate cancellation of membership of many years, the withdrawal of legacies, and the withholding of payments to Greenpeace until further notice."

As Brian Holmes notes on his website, www.holmestead.ca , the October A. D. 2004 Issue #131 of the Raum + Zeit contained many pages of letters from readers responding positively to Stetter's first article in issue #127. "Many of these letters are illustrated with color photographs supplied by the readers themselves."

GERMAN PARLIMENTARTIAN "ADMITS" CHEMTRAILS

Former six-year a board member of Greenpeace Germany, Monika Griefahn chaired the Committee for Culture and Media of the Federal German Parliament when she replied to a letter from two chemtrails dissenters in July 2004, stating, "I am in basic agreement with your concerns. Instead of making a concerted and determined effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout the world, experiments of various kinds are being carried out in the earth's atmosphere in order to cure the symptoms."

After assuring her correspondents, "I share your concern over the use of aluminium or barium compounds which have a considerable toxic potential," the parliamentarian went on to say, "however, so far as I am aware the extent of their use is so far minimal."

"At last!" Stetter announced in the German science magazine. "There we have it. In the skies of Germany, so Social Democratic member of Parliament Monika Griefahn tells us, aluminium and barium compounds are being spread just as tens of thousands of concerned citizens have observed, documented and bitterly deplored."

Thanking the Honorable Griefahn her for her courage, Stetter suggested, "Maybe one day statues of politicians like Monika Griefahn or the equally plucky U. S. Congressman Dennis Kucinich will adorn in marble splendor the squares of newly verdant German or American cities."

That would be nice.

But the public outcry in Europe will have to spread to North America if we are to stop this massive, illegal and continuing air and atmospheric pollution.

It's Time To Debate Iraq

by Rep. Lynn Woolsey, TomPaine.com

After 30 months and nearly 2,000 American deaths, it's time for Congress to debate Iraq. On September 15, it will.

GEORGE WASHINGTON'S FAREWELL ADDRESS To the People of the United States

from 43 below: "to warn against the mischiefs of foreign intrigue, to guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism;" from 32 "In the execution of such a plan, nothing is more essential, than that permanent, inveterate antipathies against particular Nations, and passionate attachments for others, should be excluded;"

GEORGE WASHINGTON'S FAREWELL ADDRESS

To the People of the United States.

FRIENDS AND FELLOW-CITIZENS:

Skipping to the foreign policy sections 31-49:

31 Observe good faith and justice towards all Nations; cultivate peace and harmony with all. Religion and Morality enjoin this conduct; and can it be, that good policy does not equally enjoin it? It will be worthy of a free, enlightened, and, at no distant period, a great Nation, to give to mankind the magnanimous and too novel example of a people always guided by an exalted justice and benevolence. Who can doubt, that, in the course of time and things, the fruits of such a plan would richly repay any temporary advantages, which might be lost by a steady adherence to it ? Can it be, that Providence has not connected the permanent felicity of a Nation with its Virtue? The experiment, at least, is recommended by every sentiment which ennobles human nature. Alas! is it rendered impossible by its vices ?

32 In the execution of such a plan, nothing is more essential, than that permanent, inveterate antipathies against particular Nations, and passionate attachments for others, should be excluded; and that, in place of them, just and amicable feelings towards all should be cultivated. The Nation, which indulges towards another an habitual hatred, or an habitual fondness, is in some degree a slave. It is a slave to its animosity or to its affection, either of which is sufficient to lead it astray from its duty and its interest. Antipathy in one nation against another disposes each more readily to offer insult and injury, to lay hold of slight causes of umbrage, and to be haughty and intractable, when accidental or trifling occasions of dispute occur. Hence frequent collisions, obstinate, envenomed, and bloody contests. The Nation, prompted by ill-will and resentment, sometimes impels to war the Government, contrary to the best calculations of policy. The Government sometimes participates in the national propensity, and adopts through passion what reason would reject; at other times, it makes the animosity of the nation subservient to projects of hostility instigated by pride, ambition, and other sinister and pernicious motives. The peace often, sometimes perhaps the liberty, of Nations has been the victim.

33 So likewise, a passionate attachment of one Nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite Nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest, in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter, without adequate inducement or justification. It leads also to concessions to the favorite Nation of privileges denied to others, which is apt doubly to injure the Nation making the concessions; by unnecessarily parting with what ought to have been retained; and by exciting jealousy, ill-will, and a disposition to retaliate, in the parties from whom equal privileges are withheld. And it gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens, (who devote themselves to the favorite nation,) facility to betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country, without odium, sometimes even with popularity; gilding, with the appearances of a virtuous sense of obligation, a commendable deference for public opinion, or a laudable zeal for public good, the base or foolish compliances of ambition, corruption, or infatuation.

34 As avenues to foreign influence in innumerable ways, such attachments are particularly alarming to the truly enlightened and independent Patriot. How many opportunities do they afford to tamper with domestic factions, to practise the arts of seduction, to mislead public opinion, to influence or awe the Public Councils! Such an attachment of a small or weak, towards a great and powerful nation, dooms the former to be the satellite of the latter.

35 Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence (I conjure you to believe me, fellow-citizens,) the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake; since history and experience prove, that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of Republican Government. But that jealousy, to be useful, must be impartial; else it becomes the instrument of the very influence to be avoided, instead of a defence against it. Excessive partiality for one foreign nation, and excessive dislike of another, cause those whom they actuate to see danger only on one side, and serve to veil and even second the arts of influence on the other. Real patriots, who may resist the intrigues of the favorite, are liable to become suspected and odious; while its tools and dupes usurp the applause and confidence of the people, to surrender their interests.

36 The great rule of conduct for us, in regard to foreign nations, is, in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connexion as possible. So far as we have already formed engagements, let them be fulfilled with perfect good faith. Here let us stop.

37 Europe has a set of primary interests, which to us have none, or a very remote relation. Hence she must be engaged in frequent controversies, the causes of which are essentially foreign to our concerns. Hence, therefore, it must be unwise in us to implicate ourselves, by artificial ties, in the ordinary vicissitudes of her politics, or the ordinary combinations and collisions of her friendships or enmities.

38 Our detached and distant situation invites and enables us to pursue a different course. If we remain one people, under an efficient government, the period is not far off, when we may defy material injury from external annoyance; when we may take such an attitude as will cause the neutrality, we may at any time resolve upon, to be scrupulously respected; when belligerent nations, under the impossibility of making acquisitions upon us, will not lightly hazard the giving us provocation; when we may choose peace or war, as our interest, guided by justice, shall counsel.

39 Why forego the advantages of so peculiar a situation? Why quit our own to stand upon foreign ground? Why, by interweaving our destiny with that of any part of Europe, entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils of European ambition, rivalship, interest, humor, or caprice?

40 It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world; so far, I mean, as we are now at liberty to do it; for let me not be understood as capable of patronizing infidelity to existing engagements. I hold the maxim no less applicable to public than to private affairs, that honesty is always the best policy. I repeat it, therefore, let those engagements be observed in their genuine sense. But, in my opinion, it is unnecessary and would be unwise to extend them.

41 Taking care always to keep ourselves, by suitable establishments, on a respectable defensive posture, we may safely trust to temporary alliances for extraordinary emergencies.

42 Harmony, liberal intercourse with all nations, are recommended by policy, humanity, and interest. But even our commercial policy should hold an equal and impartial hand; neither seeking nor granting exclusive favors or preferences; consulting the natural course of things; diffusing and diversifying by gentle means the streams of commerce, but forcing nothing; establishing, with powers so disposed, in order to give trade a stable course, to define the rights of our merchants, and to enable the government to support them, conventional rules of intercourse, the best that present circumstances and mutual opinion will permit, but temporary, and liable to be from time to time abandoned or varied, as experience and circumstances shall dictate; constantly keeping in view, that it is folly in one nation to look for disinterested favors from another; that it must pay with a portion of its independence for whatever it may accept under that character; that, by such acceptance, it may place itself in the condition of having given equivalents for nominal favors, and yet of being reproached with ingratitude for not giving more. There can be no greater error than to expect or calculate upon real favors from nation to nation. It is an illusion, which experience must cure, which a just pride ought to discard.

43 In offering to you, my countrymen, these counsels of an old and affectionate friend, I dare not hope they will make the strong and lasting impression I could wish; that they will control the usual current of the passions, or prevent our nation from running the course, which has hitherto marked the destiny of nations. But, if I may even flatter myself, that they may be productive of some partial benefit, some occasional good; that they may now and then recur to moderate the fury of party spirit, to warn against the mischiefs of foreign intrigue, to guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism; this hope will be a full recompense for the solicitude for your welfare, by which they have been dictated.

44 How far in the discharge of my official duties, I have been guided by the principles which have been delineated, the public records and other evidences of my conduct must witness to you and to the world. To myself, the assurance of my own conscience is, that I have at least believed myself to be guided by them.

45 In relation to the still subsisting war in Europe, my Proclamation of the 22d of April 1793, is the index to my Plan. Sanctioned by your approving voice, and by that of your Representatives in both Houses of Congress, the spirit of that measure has continually governed me, uninfluenced by any attempts to deter or divert me from it.

46 After deliberate examination, with the aid of the best lights I could obtain, I was well satisfied that our country, under all the circumstances of the case, had a right to take, and was bound in duty and interest to take, a neutral position. Having taken it, I determined, as far as should depend upon me, to maintain it, with moderation, perseverance, and firmness.

47 The considerations, which respect the right to hold this conduct, it is not necessary on this occasion to detail. I will only observe, that, according to my understanding of the matter, that right, so far from being denied by any of the Belligerent Powers, has been virtually admitted by all.

48 The duty of holding a neutral conduct may be inferred, without any thing more, from the obligation which justice and humanity impose on every nation, in cases in which it is free to act, to maintain inviolate the relations of peace and amity towards other nations.

49 The inducements of interest for observing that conduct will best be referred to your own reflections and experience. With me, a predominant motive has been to endeavour to gain time to our country to settle and mature its yet recent institutions, and to progress without interruption to that degree of strength and consistency, which is necessary to give it, humanly speaking, the command of its own fortunes.

STOP THE EXECUTION OF FRANCES NEWTON - Frances Newton Died for Bush's Sins

The 40-year-old black woman, executed by the death-obsessed state of Texas last night following a rejection by the US Supreme Court of her attorneys' last-ditch appeal, and after the state's craven and bloodthirsty "pardons and parole" board refused to recommend a stay to Gov. Rick Perry, hardly merited mention in the nation's media.

On September 14, 2005, Frances Newton, AN INNOCENT WOMAN, is scheduled to be executed by the state of Texas. If the jury had known the facts that are presently known, they would not have found Frances guilty nor given her the death sentence. The dubious motive, unrealistic timeline, the police's refusal to follow important leads, and most of all, her incompetent counsel, all point to the compelling evidence that proves Frances Newton is innocent. She has been on death row for 18 years, and you have already granted her a 120- day stay. But on the basis of new evidence, Frances needs to finally have her day in court. We plead to you in good conscience to STOP THE EXECUTION OF FRANCES NEWTON.

FRANCES IS THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN SCHEDULED TO BE EXECUTED BY TEXAS IN MODERN HISTORY.

NEW EVIDENCE AFFIRMS HER INNOCENCE.

Go to http://www.iacenter.org/francesnewtoncampaign.shtml for an updated urgent letter to be sent in your name. you will be able to review and modify the text to put in your own final appeal for Frances, even if you have already sent the original letter. (The updated appeal letter text appears HERE lower down in this message).

4 days remain before the scheduled execution of Frances Newton, an innocent African American woman, by the state of Texas. Thousands of people have taken up the appeal, sending over 200,000 email messages and thousands of letters and postcards and faxes and phone calls to Texas Governor Rick Perry, President Bush, legislators and the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles urging the execution be stopped. WE MUST INTENSIFY THE PRESSURE!

Former Attorney General Ramsey Clark has written to the President, the Governor and the Pardon Board. Here is what he wrote:

"Every element of law, morality, human dignity and reverence for life compel commutation of the death sentence of Frances Newton scheduled to be executed in Texas on September 14, 2005.

Evidence not presented at trial, but now known to have existed, would have caused an acquittal. Her trial attorney was not competent and can no longer appear in death cases, but too late for her. A person of financial means would never have been convicted and probably never even tried in such a case.

At 22, Frances Newton lost her husband and two children and, most cruelly, has been condemned as their murderer. Her mother and father-in-law, the parents of her dead husband and grandparents of her dead children, could have testified in her behalf at her trial, but no one called them. They pray everyday that her life be spared.

Frances Newton, a poor African-American woman unable to defend herself, who lost her family to violent death, has now spent seventeen years in prison on a conviction unsupportable in law and fact. Surely if there was ever time, now in the wake of Katrina with its devastating exposure of the fate of poor Americans caught in calamity, American officials can find the understanding, courage and compassion to commute this damnable death sentence. I ask you to use all your authority and persuasion to see that happens.

Sincerely, Ramsey Clark"

And Michael Greco, President of the American Bar Association, wrote in part:

"..significant and and compelling new evidence .. has not yet been evaluated by the Texas courts. .. This evidence was not discovered earlier because of the negligence of her appointed lawyer.. He did no investigation whatsoever, and therefore, did not place before the jury the evidence that now casts doubt on Ms. Newton's involvement in this crime. .. We believe that carrying out the execution of Frances Newton without a full review of this new evidence is inconsistent with principles of fundamental fairness and due process. Because reasonable doubt exists, we urge you to vacate her execution date so that the newly discovered evidence can be tested and properly evaluated by Texas courts."

Please join the online campaign to STOP THE EXECUTION OF FRANCES NEWTON! YOUR EMERGENCY FINAL URGENT APPEAL IS NEEDED NOW! Send emails to Texas Governor Rick Perry, Attorney General Greg Abbott, President Bush, Congressional leaders and Senators and Representatives from Texas and the Texas State Legislature, the Mayor of Houston and Houston City Councilors, The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, U.N. Secy General Kofi Anan and your senators and representative, DEMANDING that Frances' execution be stopped IMMEDIATELY!

If you have already sent an email, do it again! The letter (see below) has been updated to refer to the two letters just mentioned, and you can modify it to put in your personal appeal with all the urgency required by the execution date this Wednesday.

Go to http://www.iacenter.org/francesnewtoncampaign.shtml for the following letter to be sent in your name:

Sample Text (you will be able to edit it on the website):

Governor Perry, Attorney General Abbott, President Bush, Senators and Representatives, Houston Mayor White, Houston City Councilors, and Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles:

IN A MATTER OF DAYS, on September 14, 2005, Frances Newton, AN INNOCENT WOMAN, is scheduled to be executed by the state of Texas.

Former Attorney General Ramsey Clark has written to President Bush and Goveror Perry that "evidence not presented at trial, but now known to have existed, would have caused an acquittal." And Michael Greco, President of the American Bar Association, also wrote to the President, Governor and Pardons Board that because "significant and compelling new evidence has not yet been evaluated by Texas courts, we urge you to vacate her execution date." She has been on death row for 18 years, and you have already granted her a 120-day stay. But on the basis of new evidence, Frances needs to finally have her day in court. We plead to you in good conscience to ACT IMMEDIATELY TO STOP THE EXECUTION OF FRANCES NEWTON.

Sincerely,

STOP THE EXECUTION OF FRANCIS NEWTON!

TOMORROW, SEPT. 14, THE GOVERNMENT IS GOING TO KILL ANOTHER BLACK WOMAN IN THE POISON FLOOD WATERS OF NEW ORLEANS'

http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:Pg2awGDF6PAJ:www.prisontalk.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-143786.html+Francis+Newton&hl=en&client=firefox-a

Francis Newton, is about to become the FIRST Black woman legally lynched in Texas since the Civil War. She is scheduled to be executed tomorrow in the Huntsville, Texas death house. The poison that the state will inject into Francis might just have well be drawn from the flood waters that killed and tortured so many Black people in New Orleans.

In Francis's case the levee didn't break because it was never there to begin with. Like so many others, Francis is about to be drown in the systemic flood of racism that permeates and defines the courts in the U.S. and overpopulates its prisons and death rows with poor Black people, people of color, and increasingly, more women.

It's not enough to point out for the 10,000 thousandth time that Francis Newton did not have a fair trial. Of course she didn't. Race and class, just as in New Orleans, determines who gets rescued, and who gets lethal injections. Executions, especially executions of people of color have absolutely nothing to do with the truth, facts, and justice; they are political acts.

And so in the Texas death house tomorrow, the master will once again hold his ceremony of terror, a ritual designed to send a signal to the have nots that state sanctioned murder remains a weapon in the hands of the powerful, wielded to keep the powerless and exploited in place.

The only reason why more Black women aren't executed, is because some in the government are fearful that outrage over multiplying these murders will generate a political backlash. The executioners know that they can pretty much kill men of color at will, but they're eager to get to the women. And so tomorrow in Texas is another test to see if they can get away with it.

The bottom line? It's not just Francis Newton that they plan to do harm to tomorrow, it's all Black women, and all poor and working people of color.

For the executioners to conduct this racist test in the wake of Katrina-cide, is tantamount to them spitting on the corpses of Black people floating in the streets of New Orleans, and the mocking all of us.

The execution of Francis Newton amounts to racist insult on top of injury, and once more it's dangerous. We better do everything we can think of over the next hours to stop this crime.

And especially now, if the "movement establishment" people in the upper strata of the political arena are either too blind, too busy, too self-absorbed, too scared, or just too plain class biased to get what this execution means and do something about it, it's a big time reminder that we are going to have to start the revolution without them.

It would seem appropriate to me to inform the N.O. storm victims residing in Huntsville about the forthcoming murder of Francis Newman since they are located just a couple of hundred feet away from the pre-meditated murder scene.

They should be amongst the first to protest the killing. Tragically, the majority of the Baptists of Huntsville condone murder, in direct defiance of the words of the Jesus that they hypocritically claim to worship.

Here is the question to the parents of American service men and women that the Bush administration never thought to pose, much less answer: Is the war in Iraq worth the life of your son or daughter? 'No,' was the answer Cindy Sheehan gave on August 6 as she walked down the road in Crawford, Texas, to Bush's country estate. ... By taking a public stand, Sheehan is playing the historic role of women in time of war. She has become an emblem of the sacrifice made by the mothers, wives and daughters who lose family members in battle. But unlike the Spartan mother, she did not tell her son: 'Return from Iraq victorious or dead.' Instead, she used her loss to make Americans pause to consider whether the deaths of Casey and his fellow soldiers ... has been worth it. In essence, she broke through the media's monotonous recitation of daily deaths to put a human face on the tragedy...

Iraq: The unseen war

Salon
by Gary Kamiya

08/23/05

This is a war the Bush administration does not want Americans to see. From the beginning, the U.S. government has attempted to censor information about the Iraq war, prohibiting photographs of the coffins of U.S. troops returning home and refusing as a matter of policy to keep track of the number of Iraqis who have been killed. President Bush has yet to attend a single funeral of a soldier killed in Iraq. To be sure, this see-no-evil approach is neither surprising nor new. With the qualified exception of the Vietnam War, when images of body bags appeared frequently on the nightly news, American governments have always tightly controlled images of war. There is good reason for this. In war, a picture really is worth a thousand words. No story about a battle, no matter how eloquent, possesses the raw power of a photograph... Where's the opposition?

Cato Institute
by Chris Edwards

08/23/05

The bipartisan support for pork-filled highway and energy bills passed in July highlighted a void in Washington: an opposition party willing to challenge wasteful spending. After a decade of Republican control in Congress, the budget has expanded by two-thirds and earmarked pork projects have exploded tenfold. Democrats snipe at Republicans for just about everything -- except their reckless spending. In the early 1990s, Republicans lambasted the Democrats' wasteful spending, and that helped propel them to power in 1994. Today, Democrats are missing a ripe opportunity to attack the GOP's equally wasteful ways. The two parties are partners-in-crime in pork spending, corporate subsidies, unneeded Pentagon weapons systems, misallocated homeland security funding, and other waste...

Is the War Party turning on Bush?

Kn@ppster
by Thomas L. Knapp

08/22/05

Awhile back, I noted that, in response to the growing realization that the US has not won (and cannot win) the war on Iraq, the 'we were defeated at home' meme was beginning to circulate. This week, a more virulent strain of that meme -- 'the President won't let the troops win' -- is beginning to rear its head. ... Until now, Republican Surrealist digs at the administration have generally taken the form of attacks on Donald Rumsfeld, preserving the image of Bush as 'the guy who's on our side, but constantly undermined by his subordinates.' What's going on here ... and why is it going on now, at this particular time?

SCIENTISTS MUST SETTLE THIS DEBATE

Derbyshire Evening Telegraph

09:30 - 23 August 2005

Chellaston Residents' Association member Philip Ingall may well be raising a whole host of unfounded objections to plans for a new mobile phone mast in his suburb (Opinion, Page 4).

Or he could be highlighting a potentially deadly danger to his family, his neighbours and future generations.

The point is, we haven't a clue what the situation is.

The months and years go by, and every application for a phone mast, be it in city, village or countryside, is met with concern, anger and general opposition from people in the neighbourhood.

And this totally unsatisfactory state of affairs will remain the case until we get an assurance from an unbiased and credible scientific source that no health risk is posed by the radio waves which these things emit.

The Government's Advisory Group on Non-Ionising Radiation carried out three years of research into possible harmful effects.

Its report came out 19 months ago. It stated it could find no evidence to justify health fears - but then clambered back on to the fence by announcing more research was needed before any final conclusions could be reached.

And in that state of limbo we remain.

So, regardless of whether these phone masts are 12, 15 or 30 metres high, or if they are disguised as a petrol station sign or a Christmas tree, the objections will continue.

Resolve the health-risk debate, and then the siting of these masts can become a straightforward planning issue.

Radiation from antennas - But still WHO reigns supreme

Here: http://www.telenor.com/csr/radiation/antennas/ I read this:

"Telenor has decided that the maximum signal strength indoors in residential areas should not exceed 1 per cent of the WHO's limit value."

Question:

Why?

I will ask them and tell you if I get an answer.

Frans

But still WHO reigns supreme:

"The WHO has nevertheless chosen to introduce very high safety margins before fixing a maximum exposure effect on people. This is done to take into account any possible biological effects that so far, in spite of extensive research, have failed to materialise. The WHO's limit values were subject to revision in the latter part of the 1990s but no cause for stricter limit values could be found. In the EU, and in most other countries, the WHO's recommended limit values will be adopted as national guidelines."

The health effects have failed to materialise?? In what sense? In the laboratory.

'Peak oil' spells cataclysm for U.S., oil theorist warns

Sunday, August 21, 2005 ALEXANDER LANE

Think high gas prices are bad?

Get a load of what ex-oilman and ex-Princeton professor Kenneth Deffeyes believes are following closely behind:

"War, famine, pestilence and death," he said, eyes wide and voice deep. "We've got to get the warning out."

The threat? Peak oil.

The term, probably unfamiliar to most Americans, refers to the time when the worldwide production of oil peaks and begins a rapid decline. From then on, this incredibly efficient fuel source, which still costs less than most bottled water, will be scarcer and more costly.

Highly respected sources, including the U.S. government, think that day is distant, and most mainstream economists think it won't cause much of a ruckus.

But Deffeyes says peak oil is coming in November, and could bring humankind to the brink.

He is a devotee of former Shell geologist M. King Hubbert, who correctly predicted U.S. oil production would peak in the early 1970s. Deffeyes is also the author of "Hubbert's Peak" (2001) and "Beyond Oil: The View From Hubbert's Peak," which was published last spring.

He is among a cadre of peak-oil proponents who sketch out a frightening near-term future in which the American way of life is upended as the United States, China and other great nations scramble after oil fields like desperate players in a game of musical chairs.

"He comes out of oil. He was born in oil," said Julian Darley, an energy analyst, fellow predictor of an imminent oil peak and founder of the Post Carbon Institute, an Oregon think tank.

Deffeyes' point -- that the peak has either arrived or will very soon -- is serious.

In the long term, the nation will compensate with clean-coal and nuclear energy, along with renewable sources like wind and solar power, Deffeyes says.

"It's the five-year time scale that I'm really scared about." History has demonstrated that the fear of a coming oil shortage, justified or not, can be a powerful determinant of events. U.S. oil experts predicted a "gasoline famine" just after World War I, prompting Britain to combine three former provinces of the Ottoman Empire into a new, oil-rich country that was to remain friendly to England.

It was named Iraq. 2005, Newhouse News Service

CAMP CASEY DIARY: FRIDAY 19TH TO SUNDAY 21ST AUGUST

Emily Sharpe, Electronic Iraq (22 August 2005)

It's incredible to think that Camp Casey began exactly two weeks ago Saturday with a grieving mother and a close band of supporters sleeping in a ditch along Prarie Chapel Road. The total number of participants coming to Crawford has now swelled by thousands; the infrastructure has gone from tents in the ditch, no bathroom facilities and rudimentary meals to a huge white tent, scores of porta-potties and multi-course dinners. Hundreds of volunteers and donors have come together to make this all possible, and these little improvements in comfort will sustain us until August 31st!

GO HOME AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR KIDS

Cindy Sheehan The Huffington Post August 22, 2005

http://tinyurl.com/bo4jg

I have received dozens of emails with this heading: Go Home and Take Care of Your Kids. I think of all the name calling and unnecessary and untrue trashing of my character, this one offends me the most. What do the people who send me this message mean?

First of all, it offends me because it is so blatantly sexist. Would anyone think of emailing George Bush when he is out and about (now he is going on a vacation away from his vacation to make speeches in Idaho and Utah defending his killing policies), telling him to go and take care of his kids? Does anyone write to ANY man and tell him to go home and take care of his kids. I have news for all of these people, my children are adults and their dad is home to take care of them if they need any taking care of.

The second reason this command from the self-righteous right offends me is that I believe that what I am doing is for my children, and the world's children. I think that the strategy of eternal baseless war for corporate profit and greed is bad for all of our children: born and unborn. We heard a few weeks ago that Rummy said that we would be in Iraq for at least a dozen more years, and we recently heard over the weekend that the military is planning for four more years of this occupation, at least. If Rummy is correct, then Soccer Safety Mom Susie's kindergartener will be fighting and dying in the harsh sands of the Middle East and if the military is correct than NASCAR Dad Nick's middle-schooler should start boot camp now. I hate to be the one to break it to America, but constant war is not a positive family value and this administration's policies are not making us more secure.

We as mothers need to stop buying into the load of misogynistic crap that our children need our constant presence in their lives so they can thrive and grow. What we need as families are strong support systems that allow each family member to grow and achieve his/her full potential as human beings. What we as Moms need to stop doing is giving our children to the military industrial war complex to be used as human cluster bombs: to kill innocent civilians and to perhaps die enriching and feeding the gluttonous war machine.

It is up to us Moms to make sure our children are whole and safe. We can start doing this by always opposing the wars that bury our kids before us. So what I am saying to the people who want me to go home and take care of my kids: I AM taking care of my kids, and yours, too.

CINDY'S CRAWFORD: CAMP CASEY CONTINUES TO GROW DESPITE SHEEHAN'S ABSENCE Democracy Now Monday, August 22, 2005

http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=05/08/22/1433237

Despite the temporary departure of Cindy Sheehan to care for her ailing mother, the antiwar vigil outside President Bush's estate in Crawford is continuing to grow. Hundreds gathered on Saturday night to hear musician Steve Earle perform at Camp Casey. Legendary folk singer Joan Baez also held a concert Sunday evening. Military families, veterans and other supporters are coming from around the country -- as far away as Alaska, California and Massachusetts -- to support Cindy's efforts.

It all started two weeks ago on August 6th when Cindy began the vigil in memory of her son, Casey who died in Iraq last year. She has vowed to stay until Bush meets with her, or until his month-long vacation ends. Cindy's protest has received national and international media attention and has become the central focus of the antiwar movement. She left the site abruptly on Thursday to be with her mother who suffered a stroke. She says she plans to return before the end of the president's August vacation.

Over the weekend, Bush met with cycling champion Lance Armstrong for a two-hour bike ride around the Crawford property. Armstrong has recently criticized the war in Iraq saying it has prevented the country from spending more on cancer research. While President Bush gave him a t-shirt that said "Tour-de-Crawford", he made no public comments, Cindy Sheehan, the "Tour-de-Force" while in Crawford.

After two weeks at the Crawford estate, Bush is heading out on the road this week for a pair of speeches focusing on Iraq and the war on terror. On Monday, the president is scheduled to address the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Utah.

Meanwhile, at Camp Casey, Cindy Sheehan's supporters are vowing to stay throughout the month until Bush's vacation ends and then on to Washington for a major antiwar rally on September 24th.

Democracy Now! broadcast from Camp Casey on Friday. We stayed on though the weekend to cover the story. Military families and Iraq veterans held a press conference at Camp Casey Friday afternoon.

After the news conference, military families, veterans and others held a prayer vigil in front of the more than 840 crosses planted in the camp grounds representing soldiers killed in Iraq. They then boarded into vans and headed out towards President Bush's property to deliver the letter. Leading the procession were two women: Beatrice Saldivar whose nephew, Daniel Torres was killed in Iraq in February 2005 and Mimi Evans whose son is a marine awaiting deployment to Iraq. They were stopped at a checkpoint on the way to Bush's property.

Refusing to be turned away, Mimi Evans and Beatrice Saldivar walked hand in hand up to the barriers blockading the entrance to President Bush's estate. They dropped the letter on the ground and laid a pair of flowers on top. This is Beatrice Saldivar.

RUSH TRANSCRIPT

AMY GOODMAN: Military Families and Iraq Veterans held a news conference at Camp Casey on Friday afternoon. The temperature, as usual, over 100 degrees. One of those who spoke was Minnesota State Senator, Becky Lourey. Her son, Matt, was killed in Iraq just a few months after Casey Sheehan died. Lourey was a leading opponent in her state of the invasion of Iraq. In March 2003, the State Senator authored an anti-war resolution signed by 18 other state senators. This is what Becky Lourey had to say at the rally on Friday.

STATE SEN. BECKY LOUREY: Thank you so much for being here so that you can report to the world that Camp Casey is alive and well. I'm Minnesota State Senator, Becky Lourey. My son, CW-4, Matthew Scott Lourey, a wonderful American hero, died on May 26, saving his colleagues' lives in Iraq. And I'm reading you a letter written by all of us here.

August 19, 2005. "Dear Mr. President, Cindy Sheehan a Gold Star mother who has been camped outside your ranch, asking you to take one hour out of your five-week vacation to meet with her, left Camp Casey today when her mother had a stroke.

"While Cindy Sheehan is temporarily not in Crawford, we want to be clear that we, Gold Star and Military Families and Veterans who have stood by Cindy these past 11 days, remain encamped outside your ranch, and we will stay here until you meet with us and answer ours and Cindy's questions about the, quote, 'noble cause,' unquote, for which our loved ones have been killed or placed in harm's way. Cindy Sheehan may have started this, but we are committed to carrying it on on behalf of Cindy and the thousands of Gold Star and Military Families across the country who have the very same concerns and questions.

"Many of our families have paid the ultimate price for your administration's lies leading up to this war in Iraq, and we all deserve answers. Harm, danger, death and grief entered our living rooms the moment you sent our nation and our loved ones to a war with a country that posed no threat to America and had nothing to do with the terrible tragedy of September 11th.

"We need answers. We need the truth. You put our loved ones and all of our troops into harm's way based on lies. Too many of our loved ones have already paid the ultimate price. For those of us with loved ones deployed or about to deploy, every day threatens to transform them from a military family to a Gold Star family. We call on you, Mr. President, to support our troops and bring them home now.

"Sincerely, Charlie Anderson, Iraq veteran; Rebecca Bahr, mother of a soldier; Lynn Bradach, Gold Star mother; Cody Comacho, Iraq veteran; Michelle Deford, Gold Star mother; Linda Englund, mother of returned soldier; Mimi Evans, mother of deploying soldier; Linda Jansen, family of soldier; Doug Met, family of soldier; Tammara Rosenleaf, wife of deploying soldier; Beatriz Saldivar, aunt of fallen soldier; Nancy Towson, mother of deployed soldier; Allison Townson, sister of deployed soldier; Pat Vogel, mother of returning soldier." And say your name.

JUAN TORRES: Juan Torres, father.

STATE SEN. BECKY LOUREY: Juan, father --

JUAN TORRES: Juan Torres.

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: And Sergio Torres, father.

STATE SEN. BECKY LOUREY: And Sergio, father, right here. And for a few remarks from me personally, I do believe that a conversation is incredibly valuable. If North Carolina Congressman Walter Jones, who dubbed French fries "freedom fries," can change his mind and offer a resolution because it is clear now from all the intelligence that the presence ever our troops in Iraq is making the insurgency stronger, if Congressman Walter Jones can change his mind, so can our President Bush.

AMY GOODMAN: Minnesota State Senator, Becky Lourey, speaking at Camp Casey, Friday afternoon. She lost her son Matt this past May in Iraq. After the news conference, military families, veterans and others held a prayer vigil in front of the more than 840 crosses planted in the campgrounds representing soldiers who have been killed in Iraq. They then boarded vans and headed towards President Bush's property to deliver the letter. Leading the procession were two women, Beatriz Saldivar, whose nephew Daniel Torres was killed in Iraq, and Mimi Evans whose son, a marine, is awaiting deployment. They were stopped at a checkpoint on the way to Bush's ranch.

SECRET SERVICE: Hello. How are you doing? I'm B.J. Flowers, Secret Service. How are you doing? What can I do for you this morning?

MIMI EVANS: Hello, we have something for the President of the United States. My name is Mimi Evans. I'm with Military Families Speak Out, and I have a letter for the President.

SECRET SERVICE: Okay.

MIMI EVANS: And this letter says --

SECRET SERVICE: Well, ma'am, I cannot accept --

MIMI EVANS: I'm not reading it, and I know you cannot accept it.

SECRET SERVICE: Okay, I can't accept it, and I don't believe there's anyone from staff here to take your letter at the moment, okay?

MIMI EVANS: Will they be here later?

SECRET SERVICE: I don't anticipate them to be here. No, ma'am. Sometimes they're here

BEATRIZ SALDIVAR: Can you call somebody?

SECRET SERVICE: No. Can't call them down here. That's up to them whether they want to be down here, you know, to address any complaints or [inaudible] --

BEATRIZ SALDIVAR: Can you ask them that all the mothers of the fallen soldiers are asking somebody from the White House to come in and accept this letter?

SECRET SERVICE: They -- there's no one here to accept it, ma'am. I'm sorry. I can't take it. Thank you.

MIMI EVANS: As Secret Service, would you be able to convey the message that we are still down at the camp, and we intend to stay there, the mothers and the families, please?

SECRET SERVICE: I will relay that information.

MIMI EVANS: We are not going anywhere.

SECRET SERVICE: Okay. Very good.

MIMI EVANS: Thank you.

AMY GOODMAN: Refusing to be turned away, Mimi Evans and Beatriz Saldivar walked hand in hand up to the barriers blockading the entrance to President Bush's estate. They dropped the letter on the ground and laid flowers on top. This is Beatriz Saldivar.

BEATRIZ SALDIVAR: I want to say to President Bush one thing, okay, and in the name of Cindy and all the mothers, that letter that's laying there with those precious flowers on top is laying there. Our soldiers when they killed -- get killed in Iraq, the men next to them, the other fellow soldiers, picks up their body, their pieces. Sometimes the bodies are not recognized. Sometimes they come back in one piece, and sometimes they have their eyes open and they're dead. We ask you, President, to have the courage to pick up that letter. It's just a simple letter. We cannot pick up our sons and daughters and husbands and nephews, but you can -- we cannot bring them back alive, but you can have the courage to pick up that letter and talk to this nation and the world. The whole world is listening.

AMY GOODMAN: Beatriz Saldivar, her nephew Daniel Torres, died in Iraq earlier this year. The Secret Service told the women and their religious people supporting them who came to the checkpoint that they had to get back in their vans. The letter and the flowers remained on the ground.

JOAN BAEZ BOOSTS PEACE CAMP Associated Press / Globe & Mail August 21, 2005

CRAWFORD, TEXAS - Iraq war protesters camping out near U.S. President George W. Bush's ranch got some support Sunday night from a prominent figure in the anti-Vietnam war movement: folk singer Joan Baez.

"In the first march I went to (opposing Vietnam) there were 10 of us. This is huge," Ms. Baez told relatives of fallen U.S. soldiers Sunday before performing a free concert just up the road from the ranch.

About 500 people gathered to hear her on a half-hectare lot offered by a landowner who opposes the war. Not far away, protesters continued a camp-out started by grieving mother Cindy Sheehan.

Ms. Baez said a movement like this was waiting to happen.

"It was the final tear for the overflow and you can't stop running water," she said. "Cindy's was the final tear."

Downtown, more Bush supporters arrived at a pro-Bush camp that had been set up as a reaction to Ms. Sheehan's. As of Sunday afternoon, more than 150 people had visited the large tent with "God Bless Our President!" and "God Bless Our Troops" banners and a life-size cardboard cutout of Mr. Bush.

"When we saw this, we said, 'Thank God you're here,'" said Frances Lee, who arrived in Crawford with her Douglasville, Ga., neighbour Brenda Bohanan. They planned to hold pro-Bush banners down the street from the protesters.

"We said, 'We wanted y'all to know that there are people from all over the United States that care,'" Ms. Lee said.

The pro-Bush camp is called "Fort Qualls," for Lance Cpl. Louis Wayne

Qualls, 20, a marine killed in Fallujah last fall. His father, Gary Qualls of Temple, said the anti-war demonstrators are being disrespectful to soldiers.

Ms. Sheehan's 24-year-old son, Army Spc. Casey Ms. Sheehan, also died last year in Iraq. He is among more than 1,800 U.S. soldiers killed since the March 2003 invasion.

Ms. Sheehan, of Vacaville, Calif., started the anti-war demonstration on Aug. 6 and vowed to remain until Mr. Bush agreed to meet with her or until his month-long vacation ends Sept. 3. She flew to Los Angeles last week after her 74-year-old mother had a stroke but is expected to return to Texas in a few days.

Mr. Bush has said he sympathizes with Ms. Sheehan but won't change his schedule to meet with her. She and other families met with Mr. Bush about two months after Casey died, before she became a vocal opponent of the war.

ANTI-WAR MOM OPPOSITION MOUNTING Associated Press August 21, 2005

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/08/20/politics/main789020.shtml

A Utah television station is refusing to air an anti-war ad featuring Cindy Sheehan, whose son's death in Iraq prompted a vigil outside President George W. Bush's Texas ranch.

Also, a patriotic camp with a "God Bless Our President!" banner sprung up in downtown Crawford, Texas Saturday, countering the anti-war demonstration started by Sheehan. The camp is named "Fort Qualls," in memory of Marine Lance Cpl. Louis Wayne Qualls, 20, who died in Iraq last fall.

The anti-war ad began airing on other Salt Lake City-area stations Saturday, two days before Bush was scheduled to speak in Salt Lake City to the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

However, a national sales representative for KTVX, a local ABC affiliate, rejected the ad in an e-mail to media buyers, writing that it was an "inappropriate commercial advertisement for Salt Lake City."

In the ad, Sheehan pleads with Bush for a meeting and accuses him of lying to the American people about Iraq's development of weapons of mass destruction and its connection to al Qaeda.

"I love my country. But how many more of our loved ones need to die in this senseless war?" a weary-looking Sheehan asks in the ad. "I know you can't bring Casey back. But it's time to admit mistakes and bring our troops home now." The ads were bought by Gold Star Families for Peace, co-founded by Sheehan.

Salt Lake City affiliates of NBC, CBS and Fox began running the ad Saturday.

In a statement Saturday evening explaining its decision, KTVX said that after viewing the ad, local managers found the content "could very well be offensive to our community in Utah, which has contributed more than its fair share of fighting soldiers and suffered significant loss of life in the this Iraq war."

Bush carried nearly 70 percent of the vote last fall in Utah, one of the most conservative states north of the so-called Bible Belt.

Station General Manager David D'Antuono said the decision was not influenced by the station's owner, Clear Channel Communications Inc.

Celeste Zappala, who with Sheehan co-founded Gold Star Families for Peace, said she was puzzled by the decision.

"What stunned me was that it was inappropriate to hear this message," she said. "How is it that Salt Lake City should hear no questions about the war?"

The e-mail read: "The viewpoints reflected in the spot are incompatible with our marketplace and will not be well received by our viewers." It added that the spot didn't qualify as an issue advertisement.

For the ad to have been considered an "issue" advertisement a ballot measure would have had to be at stake, D'Antuono said.

Mark Wiest, vice president of sales for NBC-affiliated KSL television, said that in the interest of freedom of speech, his station didn't hesitate to run the ad. KSL is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"The bigger picture is, by suppressing the message are we doing what is right under the First Amendment and in an open democratic society?" Wiest said.

Salt Lake City's Mayor Rocky Anderson used e-mail this week to call for "the biggest demonstration this state has ever seen," when President Bush appears at the convention Monday.

Anderson says Bush policies are disastrous for the country and that to stay quiet during the president's visit would be send a message of apathy.

The mayor's e-mail called for a collaboration of health care advocates, seniors, gay and lesbian advocates, anti-Patriot advocates, civil libertarians and anti-war folks to protest outside the VFW convention.

Mike Parkin, senior vice commander of a VFW post in Salt Lake City, says the move makes Anderson look unpatriotic.

The Vietnam vet, who says he voted for Anderson, but won't again, says the protest will offend veterans and embolden enemies of the U.S.

In Crawford, Gary Qualls, the father of a slain soldier, explained his reasons for supporting the pro-war camp. "If I have to sacrifice my whole family for the sake of our country and world, other countries that want freedom, I'll do that," said Qualls, who is friends with the local business owner who started the camp. He said his 16-year-old son now wants to enlist, and he supports that decision.

Qualls' frustration with the anti-war demonstrators erupted last week when he removed a cross bearing his son's name that was among hundreds the group had put up along the road to Bush's ranch.

Qualls called the protesters' views disrespectful to soldiers, and said he had to yank out two more crosses after protesters kept replacing them.

Thousands Of Troops Are Sick And Dying From Illegal DU Use: Millions of Iraqis more will die from the same DU

Millions of Iraqis more will die from the same DU. Of course this does not matter to americans, indeed the purpose of the operation and use of DU seems to be to "poison the Earth", for which DU is extremely well suited. Vaporized DU contamination can not be cleaned. It is a virtual slow death sentence on anyone living in Iraq.

Former Head Of Pentagon's Depleted Uranium Project Says Thousands Of Troops Are Sick And Dying From Illegal DU Use And Military's Failure To Admit Responsibility

Greg Szymanski

After Maj. Doug Rokke went public in 1997 exposing the military's flawed DU program, his life has been threatened but he still continues to search for solutions in order to save the lives of those afflicted.

August 20, 2005

Army Major Doug Rokke has been shot at, run off the road, threatened, harassed, black- balled, intimidated, called a liar and treated like a “hated enemy” not by opposition forces in Iraq, but by ‘secret ops’ in the U.S. government, obviously acting on orders from top military brass.

And in May 2000 he was subjected to the biggest scare of his life when bullets rang through his son’s bedroom window while living in Jacksonville, Alabama, in what he calls “another near miss” by government hit men bound and determined to remove his presence from the planet.

Maj. Rokke, living in Rantoul, Illinois, and still active in the Army Reserves, has been a government target ever since going public in a May 1997 article in the Nation Magazine, criticizing the military for failing to clean-up depleted uranium used in Iraq during the first Gulf War.

Although Maj. Rokke’s accusations have been echoed by many others what makes his statements so electrifying – so damaging to the military - is that he was one of the Pentagon’s ‘top boys.’ In fact, he was not only one of the Pentagon’s elite, he was “the man” so to speak when it came to determining the causes and effects of depleted uranium (DU) used in the battle field.

Being so well-respected by the Pentagon brass, Maj. Rokke was the military expert assigned as director of the 1994 U.S. Army Depleted Uranium Project in response to congressional inquiries and direct Department of Defense (DOD) orders.

The study was commissioned after it was found the military lacked adequate preparation to deal with the adverse health and environmental effects regarding the use of DU in the battle field. This highly efficient ‘killing tool,’ which amounts to nothing less than a radioactive nuclear assault, has been extensively used in U.S. weaponry in the first Gulf War as well as the present Iraqi conflict, even though it is a direct violation of the Geneva Convention and United Nation regulations.

In simple terms, Maj. Rokke was asked to evaluate the extent of DU used and asked to advise the military how to adequately comply with its own existing regulations of training, clean-up and medical care involving soldiers and civilians contaminated.

In his final report, Maj. Rokke, however, didn’t beat around the bush or provide a technical escape for evading regulations. He simply laid it on the table plain and simple, saying if the military intended to keep using DU, it needed to address the above problems, as regulations mandated, or simply cease and desist from its use.

And. in hindsight, it was probably the words “cease and desist” or Maj. Rokke’s simple ultimatum of “clean-up or don’t use” that initially ticked-off military brass, since behind the scenes the ‘big boys” never really intended to open up a can of worms caused by Maj. Rokke’s report.

But when the implacable army officer went public about the extent of the DU problems in 1997, letting the cat out of the bag about the military’s outright refusal to comply with existing regulations, the ‘big boys’ put their boxing gloves on and are still trying to punch Maj. Rokke into submission today.

“They have been after me ever since I went public,” said Maj. Rokke in a telephone conversation this week from his country home in the heartland of Illinois. “I’ve been shot at, run off the road several times, harassed, threatened and whatever else they could think of doing to discredit me for what I was doing.

“They even shot bullets through my son’s bedroom window. These guys don’t play around and the first thing I was told when I went public was to keep my 45 loaded at all times.”

Even though Maj. Rokke’s obviously right and the military wrong, the cold and hard truth is that the big brass tried to crucify him for simply telling the truth. The cold hard truth is that even though the military admits using DU, it never has admitted to the legal causal connection between its use and its adverse effects on human and environmental health.

And critics contend that such outright contempt for its own regulations and the military’s failure to provide adequate medical care for those exposed to DU has left hundreds of thousands of military personnel and civilians sick or dying, including Maj. Rokke.

“It’s really very simple,” added Maj. Rokke. “I was asked to report on what they needed to do about the DU problem. Our team of experts then reported and provided our recommendations, plain and simple.

“But when I realized in 1997 we were being ignored and thousands of people, including myself, were sick and possibly slowly dying from DU exposure, I had to go public and blow the whistle.”

And Maj. Rokke said his warnings as well as warnings from many other experts were not only dismissed by the military, but also by every other bigwig on Capital Hill, including President Clinton, Senator John Kerry and every other member of Congress, all very much aware of his position since he even addressed the 2000 Fall Congressional Coalition Leadership at its quarterly breakfast in Washington D.C.

Adding that the DU problem is even worse today, Maj. Rokke pointed out the military continues to bombard the Iraq and Afghanistan with “increased levels’ of nuclear weaponry, leaving in its wake even higher levels of nuclear fallout then were present in Gulf War I.

And like President Clinton, his predecessor, President Bush has failed to address or even recognize the problem, leaving behind ‘hot zones’ in the Middle East while, at the same time, failing to care for radiation illnesses in returning troops.

“President Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair must acknowledge and must accept responsibility for the willful use of illegal uranium munitions, their own ‘dirty bombs,’ resulting in adverse health and environmental effects,” wrote Maj. Rokke in recent open letter, criticizing the two major leaders of the Iraq occupation.

And being crystal clear about his demands in compliance with existing military regulations, he added:

“President Bush and Prime Minister Blair need to immediately order medical care for all DU casualties, order thorough environmental remediation, issue immediate orders for the cessation and retaliation against all of us who demand compliance with medical care and ban the further use of depleted radiation munitions.

“They arrogantly refuse to comply with their own regulations, orders, and directives that require United States Department of Defense officials to provide prompt and effective medical care "all" exposed individuals [Medical Management of Unusual Depleted Uranium Casualties, DOD, Pentagon, 10/14/93, Medical Management of Army personnel Exposed to Depleted Uranium (DU) Headquarters.

“U.S. Army Medical Command 29 April 2004), and section 2-5 of AR 70-48. They also refuse to clean up dispersed radioactive contamination as required by Army Regulation- AR 700-48: "Management of Equipment Contaminated With Depleted

Uranium or Radioactive Commodities" (Headquarters, Department Of The Army,

Washington, D.C., September 2002) and U.S. Army Technical Bulletin- TB 9-1300-278: "Guidelines For Safe Response To Handling, Storage, And Transportation Accidents Involving Army Tank Munitions Or Armor Which Contain Depleted Uranium" (Headquarters, Department Of The Army, Washington, D.C., JULY 1996).

To further bolster Maj. Rokke’s accusations, all the following regulations are being violated, specifically section 2-4 of United States Army Regulation-AR 700-48 dated Sept.16, 2002, requiring:

(1) "Military personnel "identify, segregate, isolate, secure, and label all RCE" (radiological contaminated equipment).

(2) "Procedures to minimize the spread of radioactivity will be implemented as soon as possible."

(3) "Radioactive material and waste will not be locally disposed of through burial, submersion, incineration, destruction in place, or abandonment" and;

(4) "All equipment, to include captured or combat RCE, will be surveyed, packaged, retrograded, decontaminated and released IAW Technical Bulletin 9-1300-278, DA PAM 700-48.”

With the military’s blatant violations placed in the public eye due to Mj. Rokke’s courage to buck the system, other experts and scientists quickly came to Maj. Rokke’s side, offering startling information and detailed statistics showing the seriousness of the DU problem and the government’s failure to take responsibility even though it obviously caused the problem.

Radiation experts Leuren Moret and Marion Fulk, along with others like Dennis Kyne, Bob Jones and Mark Zeller, have provided documentation for an explosive video just released, written and produced by Joyce Riley and William Lewis, called “Beyond Treason,” providing an in depth look at DU used in the Gulf Wars and its likelihood of causing numerous civilian and military illnesses.

“It has been determined that the equivalent of more than 400,000 Nagasaki bombs has been released in the middle east since 1991,” said Moret, citing a report and subsequent speech at a 2000 depleted uranium conference given by Professor Yagasaki, a physicist and well-respected nuclear radiation expert.

Moret, who has spent a life time working in the nuclear field, first as a staff scientist at the Livermore Nuclear Weapons Laboratory in California, is now a member of The Radiation and Public Health Project (RPHP), a privately funded group studying the devastating effects of depleted uranium especially in Iraq and Afghanistan.

And the writers of Beyond Treason added more ammunition to Rokke’s accusations regarding the government’s failure to recognize the DU problem 15 years after it was first exposed:

“The ailing Gulf War heroes from all 27 coalition countries slowly die from of “unknown causes,” they wait for answers from their respective governments, but no satisfying or even credible answers have come forth from the military establishment. Records that span over a decade point to negligence and even culpability on the part of the U.S. Department of Defense and their ‘disposable army” mentality.

“The VA has determined that 250,000 troops are now permanently disabled, 15,000 troops are dead and over 425,000 are ill and slowly dying from what the Department of Defense still calls a mystery disease. How many more will have to die before action is taken?”

Although Maj. Rokke has been fighting to save the lives of thousands of afflicted veterans, he is also trying to save his own life as he was originally exposed to DU in 1990 and 1991 while deployed in Iraq and looking into the hazards of DU.

“First, I remember experiencing breathing problems, then a rash and then bleeding sores that never go away,” said Rokke, 56, adding DU exposure is slowly, day by day, turning him into an invalid. “The sad thing is that only several hundred military personnel have even been tested for DU exposure since the beginning when there are literally hundreds of thousands afflicted.

“In fact, it took the military more than two years to even tell me that I was ‘hot,’ withholding my urine tests and hiding the truth. One of the reasons I went public is because so many soldiers are dying from the same symptoms I have and the military simply still refuses to take medical responsibility and care for them.”

Recently, to keep the DU issue alive, Maj. Rokke published an article in the Nov. 27, 2004 edition of the popular Vanity Fair magazine, where he updated his concerns with new information about Gulf War II.

After the article appeared, he said the Pentagon and others in military circles immediately unleashed another attack on his character, accusing him of lying and even saying he never headed up the Pentagon’s DU program in the first place.

“I guess if I played their game, I would sitting somewhere with a cushy $100,000 a year job,” said Mj. Rokke. “But I decided to do what’s right no matter what the consequences. But, don’t get me wrong, I’m not a peace-nick. I am a military officer and a warrior. I would not hesitate to use nuclear weapons only, however, if it was a last. But I also feel the military should live up to its responsibilities and follow regulations, which is not the case now and why I am speaking out.”

Although declaring himself a warrior, Maj. Rokke tempered that statement, writing in September, 2002, what he called a “A Commitment To Peace.” In this short open letter, however, much is revealed about the inner-man, his obvious choice of peace versus war and his ultimate fears about the ramifications of the Iraqi invasion, which at the time of his writing was just on the horizon:

“As I sit here tonight unable to sleep, my mind is considering the ramifications of potential and ongoing military actions and economic sanctions. As a disabled warrior with combat experience in two wars, Vietnam and Desert Storm, I can only hope and pray that the outcomes of these actions do not leave another trail of adverse health and environmental problems.

“I have concluded that we must unite in a concerted effort to prevent additional suffering. Throughout the history of the world those who make a commitment to peace have endured isolation and retaliation when they challenged the individuals and governments seeking economic and political advantages. A vision of peace where all nations can live together for the common good is an ideal dream but may be unrealistic.

“War is the ultimate weapon a nation or leaders can use to control the allocation and use of food, water, terrain, shelter, and mineral resources. War occurs when nations or individuals fail to reach a satisfactory compromise on sharing of these limited resources.

Today we are reaching another crossroads in history where we must decide which road we follow. We can select peace or go to war. One means life the other means death! The prevalent modus operandi at this time of those seeking power and control is to threaten economic sanctions or military attacks in order to achieve their goals and objectives.

“This is unacceptable. We must act to with a unified and strong voice prevent nations and leaders from imposing their demands on others. At the same time we must make sure that those nations and leaders who pose a viable threat to peace are checkmated. But that does not mean that we result to military force.

“There are many options but only wise persons are willing to discuss and mutually select the option most beneficial to all. Today information control is used to prevent discussion and debate. If a person does not have adequate and validated information they will be unable to contribute to the resolution of serious problems. We must ensure the complete dissemination of information even if that information reveals illegal or disturbing actions by our own or any other nation.

“These ways to achieve peace will require a commitment of time, financial resources, knowledge, attitudes, life, liberty, and willingness to endure and retaliation by any person who wishes to contribute towards the resolution of local, state, national or international problems. The choice is ours. We can select a life as a mushroom or we can select to act. I select action for if peace is to be achieved then I must let peace begin with me.”

*This is an appeal written by Iraqi Doctors concerning what is happening in western Iraq. It is both extremely informative as well as an important appeal. Operations in many of these areas are ongoing today, despite the fact that this press release is a week old:

DOCTORS FOR IRAQ WARNS OF URGENT HUMANITARIAN CRISIS AS US/IRAQI MILITARY ATTACKS CONTINUE IN THE WEST OF IRAQ

*As US/ Iraqi military attacks continue in Haditha, Rawa, Parwana and Heet in the West of Iraq, Doctors for Iraq is warning of an urgent health and humanitarian crisis unfolding on the ground.

Haditha, Rawa and Parwana have been under attack for the past three weeks with US/ Iraqi military activities intensifying over the past few days. The main hospitals in the area are reporting shortages of medicine oxygen, sugerical kits, anti-biotics and other basic medicines.

Civilians have fled to neighbouring towns and villages such as Ana and are in need of basic foods, water and shelter. Shop keepers are unable to open their premises because of the US/ Iraqi operation, and trucks with urgent food supplies are facing serious difficulties entering the seiged areas.

Eyewitnesses and medical personal have told Doctors For Iraq that snipers are operating inside some of the seiged cities. Haditha hospital estimates that at least eleven civilians were killed during the attack and 15 injured. The US military prevented ambulances from entering the areas and medics from working freely. The area remains under siege.

Local people say that US marines invaded the town of Rawa and carried out air strikes bombing many buildings and homes. It unclear how many civilians have been killed or injured in the areas where the military is carrying out operations A school building in Parwana was bombed with people inside the school. PHONE MASTS: 'NO POINT PROTESTING'

Leicester Mercury
BY GARY MITCHELL

10:30 - 22 August 2005

Campaigners were warned today they have little chance of stopping phone masts being built on their doorsteps.

City leaders and phone companies say mobile phone antennae will continue to go up across Leicester.

Once a planning application has been submitted, residents are virtually powerless to do anything about it.

The news will come as a blow to the hundreds of people who petition the council asking them to reject planning permission for phone masts near their homes.

Roman Scuplak, deputy leader of Leicester City Council, said: "Our hands are tied.

"If the council had the choice, we would not allow companies to put up these masts, because it's clearly something that people are not happy with.

"Even if we turn down the company, they will appeal to the Government."

He said phone companies would almost always succeed in an appeal because the Government does not accept objections to planning applications based on health risks from radiation.

Mr Scuplak said: "It's extremely difficult for us to do anything.

"If we fight every case against phone companies, it costs council tax payers considerable sums of money in legal costs."

John Mugglestone, the council cabinet leader for regeneration and culture, said: "The chances are you can't stop phone companies.

"The only thing you can do is try delaying tactics. The public's feelings are not being taken into consideration by the Government."

Masts under 15m in height do not require full planning permission and can be erected without residents being informed.

Last year, the Leicester Mercury revealed the locations of 50 masts across the city which had been put up without people needing to know.

However, masts over 15m in height do need planning permission and critics say they are being installed without consideration for the public's concerns.

Keith Vaz, MP for Leicester East, said: "All the cards are in the hands of phone companies, who use their power to put pressure on local authorities.

"It's important that the Government looks at our planning laws. We urgently need new legislation so that people have their voices heard."

The comments come after mobile phone company 3 installed a 33ft mast in Nether Hall Road early on Saturday morning, despite furious protests from residents.

Barbara Potter, chairwoman of Netherhall Tenants' and Residents' Association, led the campaign against the mast and had previously managed to stop it being put up by tying herself to the work site.

She said: "The local authority should stand up to them.

"If it continues, phone masts are going to overrun the city."

Mike Dobson, community affairs manager for phone company 3, said: "We are confident that people's views are being taken into account. With 60 million phone subscribers in the UK, it's clear that people throughout the country are demanding this service.

"The more people use mobiles, the more masts are necessary."

If wars can be started by nineteen men, armed with nothing more than box-cutter knives, perhaps peace can be precipitated by a lone woman standing alongside a road in Texas, demanding that a president be accountable for his actions. Don’t think for a moment that the established order is unaware of and not fearful of just such a possibility.

Rev. Pat Robertson calls for US to kill Hugo Chavez

Every day the news seems worse. A "CHRISTIAN" man calls openly for the assassination of the president of another country! Now how on earth can we let that go unpunished. Other countries will retaliate, but probably not against Bush himself, but against the rest of us. This is unacceptable behavior. We don't want anyone calling for the assassination of Bush, and we should not be treating Pat Robertson's behavior as either patriotic or permissible, especially given his stature.

Speaking of religion, people seemed to be surprised that Billy Graham is a Democrat. In my memory, he was about the only evangelist who could bridge the gap between the evangelists and the mainstream Christians.

I was optimistic for a bit that CNN might really do the whole job in their hour-long documentary, Dead Wrong. But it appears that its overall approach was to say things about faulty intelligence without implying any real wrong doing on the part of Bush ... They never mentioned whistle blowers like Wilson. The only person they seemed to want to seriously dump on was Tenet.

Robertson called for the assassination of Venezuela's president
Media Matters for America
August 22, 2005

Pat Robertson, host of Christian Broadcasting Network's The 700 Club and founder of the Christian Coalition of America, called for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

From the August 22 broadcast of The 700 Club:

ROBERTSON: There was a popular coup that overthrew him [Chavez]. And what did the United States State Department do about it? Virtually nothing. And as a result, within about 48 hours that coup was broken; Chavez was back in power, but we had a chance to move in. He has destroyed the Venezuelan economy, and he's going to make that a launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism all over the continent. [CNN reported that on Monday's broadcast of "The 700 Club" Pat Robertson had called for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.[1] -- The founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network said that assassination was "a whole lot cheaper than starting a war." -- "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with," he said. "This is in our sphere of influence, so we can't let this happen." -- "Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The CIA estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59% of Venezuela's total exports," AP noted in a report on Robertson's remarks that appeared in *USA Today*.[2] -- The show can be viewed on the web site of "The 700 Club." http://www.cbn.com/700club/index.asp -- Robertson's remarks were not off-handed comments, but rather a prepared talk that followed a long video report entitled "Hugo Chavez v. America."
