THURSDAY, Feb. 3 (HealthDay News) - Driving while talking on a cell phone adds decades to a young driver's life -- at least in terms of impaired driving ability, researchers say.

A new study finds the reaction time of young drivers using cell phones slows to levels roughly equivalent to those seen in 70-year-old drivers not using cell phones.

"They aged 50 years in five seconds, just by turning on their cell phones," said researcher Frank Drews, a cognitive psychologist at the University of Utah.

The findings, published in the current issue of Human Factors, included some good news for elderly drivers: their cell phone use did not further slow their reaction time any more than that of the young.

Drews and his colleagues first came to public attention in 2001, with a study pinpointing "inattention blindness" -- a splitting of available attention between the phone conversation and the road ahead -- as the main cause of impaired driving while on cell phones. That study raised questions as to whether legislation in New York and New Jersey banning handheld cell phone use while driving (in favor of hands-free devices), was really a solution to the problem.

In their latest research, Drews and co-researcher David Strayer examined the effects of cell phone use on two groups of drivers that federal statistics suggest are at highest risk for traffic accidents -- the young (between 18 and 25 years of age) and the elderly (between 65 and 74 years of age).

Using hi-tech, virtual-reality driving simulators, they had 20 people from each age group maneuver through busy highway traffic -- first without using a cell phone, and then while engaged in a long cell phone discussion.

While on cell phones, "people exhibit what we call sluggish driving behavior," Drews said. "They basically don't respond to the onset of the pace car's brake lights as well, and they aren't applying their brakes as strongly as someone who's not talking on the cell phone."

For example, in young drivers using cell phones, reaction times in hitting the brakes slowed from an average of eight-tenths of a second to just over nine-tenths of second. That difference may not sound like much, the researchers say, but it's roughly the difference in braking reaction times between a 20-year-old and a 70-year-old.

In terms of virtual-reality "accidents" occurring during the simulation, there were six, all rear-enders. Four of the six occurred while the drivers were talking on cell phones, and only one of those four involved an older driver. The other three involved young motorists, the researchers said.

Drews stressed that these numbers were far too small to reach statistical significance, so no firm conclusions can be drawn as to whether or not cell-phone use ups accident risk. However, he pointed out, "All of the previous studies [on the issue] show more accidents when people are talking on a cell phone than when they aren't."

The study did reveal the good news for elderly drivers: "We expected to find that [cell phone-linked] impairment would be much more when you're old than when you're young," Drews said. "But we found no such interaction." That's probably because older motorists compensate by bringing extra experience and caution to their driving, he added.

The Utah researcher shied away from any recommendation that cell phone use while driving be banned altogether, preferring to let the data speak for itself.

"I'm not a politician, but I think politicians should carefully review the existing literature and make an informed decision about the risks," Drews said. "We as a society have to determine, also, at which point we are no longer willing to take the risks associated with cell phone use while driving."

Drews did point to findings from one other study he helped conduct, however.

"We compared one accepted [legal] threshold of risk -- being legally drunk -- and compared the driving behaviors of people who were drunk vs. people who were on cell phones," he said. "We didn't find a lot of difference."

There has been much misunderstanding, and dare I say it, misinformation, regarding the EU Food Supplements Directive and ANH’s legal challenge to it.

As ANH Partners and Members it is vital that you understand what is really going on and I am going to attempt in this letter to put you in the picture.

It is quite involved and may take a little time to read but I urge you to persevere as your continued access to quality and effective food supplements depends on YOU taking appropriate informed action.

What’s wrong with the Food Supplements Directive?

The British Government and many MPs and MEPs when asked about the Food Supplements Directive (“FSD”) will insist that it is a good piece of EU legislation because it harmonises the currently very different laws of all EU Members States in respect of food supplements and ensures high quality standards at the same time. Thereby trade in supplements is increased across the EU and consumers can feel safe.

Seems reasonable you might be thinking.

But what is the price tag?

6 key things principally;

The FSD reverses the burden of proof as regards showing that food supplements are safe. Previously a food supplement could generally be sold as food unless the Regulator could prove scientifically that it is unsafe. (This is the position in the USA for example under DSHEA). Now in the EU it will be for the manufacturer to prove at great cost that it is harmless before he can sell it. It creates a very restricted list (known as the “positive list”) of allowable nutrients which favours synthetic nutrients over those much closer to how they are found in nature. It will, in time set what are anticipated to be very low maximum doses of nutrients In order to get on the positive list of allowable nutrients a technical and very costly Dossier will required which may or may not ultimately be acceptable to the EU Regulators.

If a nutrient (or its source) is not on the restricted list it will be banned across the EU from 1 August 2005 regardless of the fact that it was previously happily allowed to be sold in various EU Member States for perhaps many years.

At present the FSD only applies to vitamin & minerals. However it is a framework Directive and is intended in time to apply to all nutrients and their sources. So the negative pattern we see here applying now to vitamins and minerals will in time be applied to all nutrients.

So what have we got?

Under the guise of a harmonisation Directive ostensibly seeking to improve the supply of food supplements across the EU, we in fact end up with a measure which will ban many nutrients presently on sale in the EU.

And for those that get through, the maximum dose levels are likely to be very impotent.

The Directive thus defeats the whole purpose for which many people take food supplements, namely to supplement their diet in order to promote optimal well being through the addition of key vital nutrients which they cannot get in their normal diets any more (unless they happen to live in an organic tropical paradise).

The fact that the FSD has a negative effect is impossible to hide.

The UK Government when it undertook its Regulatory Impact Assessment (measuring the impact of the implementation of the FSD in the UK) concluded that on balance the FSD had a negative cost / benefit for the UK and conceded that the ban on nutrients which are currently allowed to be sold in the UK (unless they get requalified by submission of a dossier) was “unnecessary”.

You’ll see many statistics flying around but in essence we are looking at the ban of around 75% of the vitamin and mineral sources (“forms”) currently on the EU market. This will translate into a banning of some 300 vitamin and mineral ingredients and possibly around 5000 products currently available.

Now remember, if this is what is happening to vitamins and minerals now what will happen to all other nutrients in the future?

Keep well in mind the 3 FSD bogey men:

The reversal of the burden of proof

The restricted list of allowable nutrients unless proved harmless at huge cost

The very low potencies which will be allowed even if a nutrient gets through and onto the positive list

In summary what the FSD is really doing is to impose quite arbitrarily and unnecessarily, a drugs style licensing regime on food supplements or more particularly on food nutrients which hitherto we have been eating happily for thousands of years!

Well if this is so bad you might be asking how on earth did it get passed into EU law?

Indeed.

ANH has exhaustively researched this question and bottom line no one seems really to be able to justify what has happened.

The usual reason given is as I have explained above. The FSD will promote trade in safe food supplements across the EU.

And yes the price tag for the UK and other more liberal regimes may be high but that was the best we could get in our negotiations in Europe, so says the UK Government in particular.

But we say at ANH that the price is far too high and quite unnecesary and unacceptable.

The international Dimension

You might be reading this from a country outside the EU and thinking well that’s pretty tough for those Europeans but we’re ok here.

True for now, but perhaps not for long.

You may be aware that the EU has the dominant vote in the setting of Codex international standards for food. Thus what they want they can push through even if other countries protest.

This is a complex area of international law but in brief ANH and others are extremely concerned that an EU regime for the treatment of food supplements may be exported world wide under the auspices of Codex and made to have regulatory teeth through the WTO.

More, on this complicated subject in another letter.

But for the time being I repeat my point.

Bad things that happen in Europe may very well in time also negatively affect the rest of the world.

And that means YOU.

The ANH Legal Challenge

As you are well aware pretty early on ANH came to the view that the only way to deal with the FSD was to challenge it in the Courts and ultimately that meant bringing a case in the EU supreme court; the European Court of Justice (“ECJ”).

I will not bore you with the details of our case (for those who are interested, the key documents are available in the “ANH Legal Challenge” documents area of our web site).

But in essence we are saying the following.

Food supplements are food, not drug. Therefore they do not need a drugs style regulatory regime imposed upon them.

You do not need a license to sell food.

Under existing law throughout the EU, food is perfectly well regulated from a legal point of view ensuring quality and safety.

The Food Supplements Directive, if it really was intended to harmonise and promote the supply of safe food supplements across the EU, did not require a ban on nutrients which were not on the positive list.

It could have and indeed should have had merely a minimum list of acceptable nutrients which all Member States were obliged to accept across the EU (sometimes called a "White List"). Whilst leaving individual Member States free to allow a wider selection of nutrients to be used in food supplements within their particular borders if they wanted to.

Indeed we go further and argue that under EU law, the FSD,in imposing a sweeping and draconian ban across the EU without even attempting to provide a scientific justification or rationale, actually infringes EU law.

We conclude that the FSD should be allowed to remain and but should do its job properly.

Thus without the ban.

It would then act as a minimum white list of vitamin and mineral nutrients which all Member States would be obliged to accept across the EU.

That would increase trade.

What are our chances of success?

Cautiously we would say that we are optimistic. EU legal precedent is on our side.

The UK Government chose not to make present oral submissions at the Hearing of the case in the ECJ on 25 January 2005. Paul Lasok QC, our barrister said that in his experience it is most rare for the UK to not attend an oral hearing where it has filed Written Observations as it has done here.

The only Member State to present oral submissions was Greece.

And despite repeated questioning from the Advocate-General (a very senior independent lawyer who advises the ECJ in its deliberations), none of the Community Institutions were able to adequately explain exactly how the procedure for getting a nutrient on to the positive list actually works.

Indeed in some consternation the Advocate-general exclaimed at one point that as far as he could see it the procedure had “the transparency of a black box”.

Aside from being amusing this comment is significant because if the ECJ finds that there was no proper and transparent procedure for getting on the positive list that itself would be a ground for finding the ban as being unlawful under EU law.

As you will have seen from our press releases the Advocate-General will be giving is Opinion on 5th April 2005. This is not the judgment of the Court which will follow probably in June 2005. However as the ECJ tends to follow its Advocate-Generals' Opinions in 80% of cases this Opinion is going to be very significant.

What you can do

First and foremost please understand that we are all in this together.

The current project of the neoliberal economic machine is approval of the European constitution: with the aim of solidifying the political ties that have made it easier for transnational corporations to control European economic affairs. The Dept. of Peace was introduced into the House of Representatives by Congressman Dennis Kucinich and currently has over 54 congressional co-sponsors. This bill establishes nonviolence as an organizing principle of American society, providing the U.S. President with an array of peace-building policy options for domestic and international use. From international conflicts to domestic issues such as gang, school and domestic violence -- the DoP would systematically root out the core causes of violence in our culture. A Department of Peace is no new idea, George Washington was one of the first people to declare how important such an effort would be to creating real peace on Earth.

The thirteenth amendment abolishing slavery; the nineteenth amendment providing women's suffrage; the Civil Rights legislation of the 1960's, were all critically important shifts in direction for our nation. Thanks for phoning me about Trevor's programme. Once again, things were not studied in depth and no mention was made of the dreadful suffering engendered by these emissions. I understand this to a certain extent, as I feel loathe to 'worry' people, yet is it fair that some people are suffering effects without realising it? Surely it's time 'spades' were referred to so that they can join in the protests?

This is the third time I have seen reference to the increase in white bloodcell count in the presence of emissions (first was in the Pandora document) - we have two cases within 100 metres of the Orange mast in Kensworth there being no infection present in either case and Doctors unable to find a cause!

There have also now been 4 cases of stroke/heart attack 20 to 100metres from the mast as well as eight cases of severe nosebleeds amongst adults and children (one of them a visiting father whose baby could not get to sleep in the front bedroom. Dad changed places with the baby and suffered severe nose bleeds for two nights after which he took his family home and said he wouldn't go there again until the mast was moved!

And of course, we have all the usual symptoms - chronic insomnia and headaches, nausea and vertigo; tinnitus and earache; sore eyes; ulcerated mouths and throats with accompanying severe thirst etc etc.

Yet we still get replies from Dept of (Ill?) Health saying there is nothing they can do and the non-thermal effects are completely ignored!

Who can blame folk from pulling down masts?

The mobile phone industry has ruled out changes to marketing to children in light of a warning by a leading scientist that the phones could still pose health risks.

The British Government's leading adviser on radiation, Sir William Stewart, has urged parents of children under 10 to deny them access to mobile phones until scientists can say handsets are safe.

His warnings come as the number of six- to nine-year-olds using mobiles in Australia hit 2 per cent, far less than the reported figure of 14 per cent in Britain.

Australia's mobile phone operators claim they are doing enough already to ensure that figure does not rise.

"Our position to not market to under 10s remains solely a social issue. Our resolve in this respect has not changed. The health issues remains a separate issue," a Virgin Mobile spokeswoman said.

"There's nothing new in the research and it confirms that mobile phones do not cause adverse effects," a Telstra spokesman said. Telstra is exploring a handset for the under-10s and promotions in magazines targeting 10- to 14-year-olds are acceptable because Telstra classifies them as "youths" not "children". Vodafone and Optus are not changing their guidelines that prohibit marketing to under-16s.

As chairman of Britain's National Radiation Protection Board, Sir William concluded in 2000 that there were no adverse health effects for the general public but that children should only use mobiles for essential calls.

This week he told the London-based Daily Telegraph that making mobiles available to children under nine was "ludicrous". He was more concerned about the possible health hazards than he was five years ago because the number of mobile phones had doubled, the paper reported.

In October, Stockholm's Karolinska Institute found there was an increased risk of a brain tumour for people who had used mobiles for more than 10 years.

The Federal Government agency that monitors radiation levels, the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency, is satisfied with the emission levels of handsets but a spokesman admitted there was still a "degree of uncertainty".

A specialist in occupational medicine, Dr Bruce Hocking, said: "There are still major concerns about the safety of handsets so if people are going to be serious where children are concerned then they should urge them to use SMS or a landline in ordinary circumstances."

Dear Gary can't comment on you letter because I am not technical but I think it is interestting to see that he works for Marconi. They are a very dodgy company. I expect you know the scandal when they went virtually bankrupt- a few year's ago but there was also a hushed up scandal some years ago. 5 or 6 scientists working on a project for Marconi in Chelmsford essex all died---in mysterious circumstances, a series of articles ran in the Daily Telegraph, they were all supposed car accidents or suicides etc. etc. The paper articles insinuated that they were working on a project they were extremely unhappy about and were about to blow the whistle on it and were murdered to stop them spilling the beans. I have often wondered since if it were anything to do with mobile telephony.

Dear Mr Walton,

I note that you are seeking a site for a 3G mast in the Roundhill area of Brighton (ref 51558).

I live near the bottom of Florence Road and do not want to live within 500 metres of any mast, but especially not a 3G one, due to well founded health concerns.

Please do not try to persuade me that these masts are safe or tell me that they operate well within current guidelines. I know they are not safe and I know current guidelines are irrelevant as they do not measure the pulsed microwaves which cause the damage.

I do not think you should be placing these masts so near homes and schools. I believe you need to investrigate current mast technology, research and evidence and not roll out these masts until you and people who will be living nearby are truly convinced they are safe, as well as ensuring they are placed well away from ANY homes, hospital, nursing homes and schools.

Letter sent to The Argus

A new report from the University of Utah says when motorists between 18 and 25 talk on cell phones - including handsfree - they move and react as slowly as the average seventy year old and increase their risk of accidents.

It found that drivers who talked on mobiles were 18 percent slower which it claims could be the difference to stopping in time to avoid hitting a child.

It also found that motorists who talk on mobiles are more impaired than drunken drivers with blood-alcohol levels exceeding 0.08.

And on February 1, the head of Russia's national health, Gennadi Onishenko, announced research results showing that mobiles harmed childrens' health in particular and caused child cancer.

He said: "Even if a child uses a mobile phone for two minutes, the child's bioelectric activities remain unstable for two hours."

He also introduced Hungarian research showing that using mobiles from a younger age increased the risks of developing brain tumors in ones twenties.

He refuted phone manufacturers' claims that the products were safe, saying, "Mobile phones cause insomnia, memory failure, and high blood pressure."

He also stated that people who keep mobiles near their bodies - around their necks, in their pockets, or carrying them in their hands - were in more danger.

Thus, he claimed that children, pregnant females, and drivers with cardiac pacemakers should not use mobile phones.

In Russia, which has no mobile phone manufacturer, research regarding mobiles is announced freely, whilst in the UK, the media makes huge amounts of money from the Telecom industry. Two ex Orange CEOs now occupy key positions at the Daily Telegraph.

In Brighton and Hove, T-Mobile has selected sixteen sites for its' third generation masts, which are much more powerful than conventional (GSM) ones, even though ill health clusters around GSMs including cancer, epilepsy and motor neurone disease have been widespread in the UK for years and high quality research has repeatedly shown the masts are to blame.

Carrier-Sekani First Nations Have Already Staked Territory Claimed by Mineral Prospectors

Dakelh Traditional Territory (Prince George, B.C.) – “The B.C. provincial government’s online mineral staking system is illegal,” affirmed Carrier Sekani Tribal Chief Harry Pierre. The Tribal Chief was responding to the government’s new program, in operation since January.

Chief Pierre states, “The Province and industry should understand that consultation and accommodation of our Rights and Title must occur at the earliest stage – in this case there should have been consultation and accommodation on the government’s new plan. Northgate Minerals Inc. (Kemess North) and Placer Dome (Mt. Milligan) are two mining examples in the CSTC territory where there was no consultation at the exploration stage and subsequently these projects may not be approved by the First Nations.” Northgate has committed not to proceed with their project unless First Nations approve the plan.

In 1982, the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council had its comprehensive land claim reviewed and accepted by the federal government for negotiation after it recognized that CSTC first nations had prima facie title to their land. In 1992, the federal government combined its comprehensive lands claims process into the B.C. treaty process. The BC Treaty Commission, overseers of the treaty process, acknowledges that Canada confirms “under section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, aboriginal rights and treaty rights, both existing and those that may be acquired are recognized and affirmed.”

On November 18, 2004, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in the Haida and Taku decisions that the Crown is legally obligated to meaningfully consult with First Nations where government has knowledge of an activity that could impact prima facie Aboriginal title and rights. These decisions reaffirmed that First Nations have an enforceable right to be involved in land use decisions that will impact their traditional territories. Moreover, the highest court clearly renounced the legal and moral intransigence displayed by government and industry toward First Nations these past 150 years.

“Today, we are that much closer to the recognition that we have been seeking since contact – that we are the original peoples and owners of this land and that we must have a say in what goes on in our territories,” said Chief Pierre.

“Government has been saying that we must prove our Aboriginal Title in a court of law before we have the right to be consulted, but this decision says government itself has not done enough to prove their own title to the land they call British Columbia.”

“Every inch of recognition and accommodation given to First Nations has come through the courts. Government has made it clear that they are unwilling to recognize and deal fairly with our people unless compelled to by the court.” However, said the Tribal Chief, “First Nations don’t want to litigate unless absolutely necessary. They want to build new relationships with the Crown and industry, where decision-making on land use is shared and where meaningful consultation and accommodation is basic to doing business in B.C.”

Scandals have tripped up so many companies it's hard to keep track of them - from banks (Citigroup, Bank of America, Riggs) to mutual funds (Putnam, Janus Capital Group, Alliance Capital Management, and others). Mutual funds have paid more than $2.5 billion to settle charges. Marsh & McLennan Cos., a huge insurance broker, agreed last week to pay $850 million to avoid going to trial for fraud. If the annual revenues of companies tainted by scandal were assembled into a gross corruption product, it would top $1 trillion. India Begins AIDS Vaccine Trials on Humans

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India, home to the world's second-largest HIV population after South Africa, began its first ever human trials of a new vaccine against the deadly virus Monday, the health minister said.

A vaccine -- the best hope for the developing world where drugs remain out of reach for millions -- is considered the Holy Grail in the battle against the AIDS epidemic, but efforts to find one have been hampered by HIV's uncanny ability to mutate.

Human trials of vaccines against different strains of the virus are already being conducted in the United States, Europe, Africa and South America.

"We've started the first phase of clinical trials, but 85 percent of our focus is still going to be on prevention," Anbumani Ramadoss told a news conference.

"Developing a vaccine to prevent AIDS is one of the most difficult scientific challenges of our time. It is also one of the most urgent health needs."

India has more than 5.1 million people living with HIV/AIDS and experts say the number could quadruple by 2010. The World Bank has warned the disease would become the single largest cause of death in the world's second-most populous country unless there is progress on prevention.

The first phase of human trials in India is being conducted on 34 adult volunteers at the government-run National AIDS Research Institute in the western city of Pune along with the International Aids Vaccine Initiative, health department officials said.

The trial is aimed at fighting the strain C, the subtype most commonly found in the country.

Indian health officials said the first phase of trials would take about two years and it would be at least eight to 10 years before a vaccine could finally be developed.

"This is a marathon, and not a sprint," said Seth Berkley, head of the International Aids Vaccine Initiative.

India's HIV problem has assumed serious proportions despite health programs to halt its spread. Over the years, HIV/AIDS has moved beyond traditionally high-risk groups such as homosexuals, commercial sex workers and drug users.

The virus is spreading into families, infecting mothers and children, and many people do not even know they are infected because of the widespread lack of awareness about the disease.

Experts say the most alarming trend is the spread of the disease to villages, with rural India accounting for 59 percent of infections compared with 41 percent in cities.

I know various emails have circulated about this already. I applaud this action but do wonder if it will work in practice.

In the UK various schools / Local Education Authorties have done this over the last 8 years, and what happens is that the mast usually gets put up on private land 100 metres or so from the school whereby the school is actually MORE exposed to microwave radiation in the main beam from the mast that it would have been with the antennas above the roof of the school buildings themselves.

So my questions are:

What realistic chance is there that VSB policy, KMGA, Incompatible Land Uses Near Schools, be amended to include any installation of cellular antenna within 305 m (1000 feet) of a school as an incompatible use?

Would that become enforceable law?

Or is this just a publicity pressure / issue raiser vote?

A very important comment! I have for many years tried to point out the very same. If an operator remove masts and place them further away, the operator will have to increase the transmitting output power, which means that for instance a school will be equally well irradiated (even to a higher level since the local transmitters (=the cellular phones) must increase their output level). So, in essence, this can turn out contra-productive.

But, do not misunderstand me: Since the biologically effective levels are down to 100,000 times below the recommended exposure levels for U.K. citizens, the question is not to move base stations, they questions is:

Should you allow yourself to be irradiated at all?

Furthermore, very much of the scientific thinking is nowadays aimed at "non-thermal, non-SAR, non-ICNIRP"-based hypotheses. We left the thermal noise level many years ago, but certain areas of society does not seem to grasp that...

Hi Don and Alasdair,

There is only one remaining school with transmitters on the roof. I understand your point about more radiation if it is moved 100 meters away [although it will still be within "international guidelines"].

If I draw a 1,000 foot diameter circle around every school in Vancouver, that is going to encompass a huge number of transmitters which are now "incompatible" due to their proximity. Their main beams are pointing at a number of schools. The Director of Facilities is on holiday until the 21st but I plan to get together with him and see where we can take this legally with the city. I will also tie this in with the firefighters, who want the antennae removed from two firehalls, [the city gets the rent] in keeping with the IAFF resolution passed last August in Boston.

The school board is also planning to raise community awareness about this issue, including a letter of explanation to parents of every student in the district. I expect to help them write that letter.

This wheel keeps squeeking.

“As President, I will sign legislation to provide for those families who suffer a loss in war and to protect the livelihood of reservists who are called up and have to leave their jobs. This legislation will include $250,000 on top of their present life insurance policies for all service members who die in the line of duty.”

Democratic Governor Bill Richardson of N.M. has taken the lead on this issue and signed into law on Wednesday “a plan to pick up the tab for a $ 250,000 National Guard death benefit policy.”

Thanks to Richardson’s lead, “at least 16 states are now considering similar legislation,” rather than wait on the President, who’s track record on providing for our troops and veterans is abysmal. Read more at:

Then there is the promise of an 'ownership society,' which the president says is his goal to create. Who could be against that? Ownership is part of the American dream. It begins with owning a toy, progresses to owning a late-model sedan, and often leads to owning a second home somewhere warm. You aren't a fan of the 'ownership society'? Why do you hate freedom? But on the way to a brighter, better, more individually owned America there are a few sticky questions...

I haven't been able to get out of my mind the description of U.S. Army specialist Charles Graner as 'primary torturer' that was used at Graner's January court-martial by a former detainee and victim of brutality at the Abu Ghraib prison.

... What has stuck in my head about this incident goes beyond Graner having committed torture -- behavior that most Americans, I am sure, see as outside and antithetical to our shared core, historical values. What I can't shake is that Graner was described as the 'primary' torturer, meaning there were others. We have to accept that there were (are?) moderate torturers, minor torturers, plus enablers and disguisers of torture -- acting in our name, being paid out of the billions being spent on the Iraq and Afghan wars and the ill-defined and limitless War on Terror...

Omega was kann man von einer Studie erwarten, die von der Mobilfunkindustrie finanziert wird? Die Ergebnisse sind ja oben schon angedeutet: ohne das Ergebnis der Forschungen zu kennen spricht Katharina Stärk bereits davon, dass sie keine Auswirkungen erwartet. Auf eine solche Forschung kann beruhigt verzichtet werden, das Geld kann man sparen. Diese Forschungen müssen letztlich nur von den Betroffenen der Strahlung auch noch über ihre gezahlten Mobilfunkgebühren selbst finanziert werden.

Prof. Dr. Olle Johansson, ein Mann der ersten Stunde und in den skandinavischen Ländern immer an vorderster Front, seit Gesundheitsschäden durch elektromagnetische Felder zu verzeichnen sind, wird zur Zeit von einzelnen Checkbuchjournalisten gegen entsprechende Honorierung zu demontieren versucht. Olle Johansson ist Professor für experimentelle Dermatologie am Karolinska-Institut in Stockholm und hat sich durch seine Forschungen auf dem Gebiet der Schädigung der menschlichen Haut infolge elektromagnetischer Bestrahlung, internationale Anerkennung geschaffen.

Die Vereinigung der Schwedischen Skeptiker hat Professor Olle Johansson vom Karolinska-Institut in Stockholm den Titel „Misleader of the year 2004“ (Irreführer des Jahres) verliehen.

Die Auszeichnung geht damit an einen Referenten, der kürzlich auf Einladung von Gigaherz in Olten aufgetreten ist.

Die Vereinigung der Schwedischen Skeptiker (VoF) ist eine Organisation mit 1600 Mitgliedern mit dem Ziel, die Öffentlichkeit und die Medien über Wissenschaft zu informieren. Die Vereinigung prüft im speziellen den wissenschaftlichen Status von kontroversen Phänomenen. In der Laudatio heißt es, Olle Johansson lenke wie zu viele andere Wissenschaftler auch die Aufmerksamkeit auf sich selbst und verbreite in der Öffentlichkeit Unsicherheit indem er unbegründete Hypothesen als gesicherte Fakten verbreite. Seine eigene Forschung bezüglich elektromagnetischer Felder sei von niedriger Qualität, heißt es weiter.

Gigaherz hat sich in Schweden umgehört und über die sogenannte „Vereinigung der Schwedischen Skeptiker“ folgendes in Erfahrung gebracht:

Die kleine aggressive Organisation versuche seit über 20 Jahren in Schweden die Forschungsfreiheit und die Meinungsäußerungsfreiheit einzuschränken, indem sie obenerwähnten Preis verteile und damit mentalen Terror ausübe.

Die Nähe zur und die Finanzierung durch die Elektro- und Kommunikationsindustrie sei dokumentiert.

Die Wurzeln der Organisation würden bis zur Zeit der Nazizensur in Schweden zurückreichen.

Unter Anderem hetzten die selbsternannten Skeptiker seit jeher gegen den alternativen Nobelpreis, so auch gegen Wangari Maathei, die dann 20 Jahre später, d.h. 2004 tatsächlich den „echten“ Friedens-Nobelpreis erhielt.

Olle Johansson schreibt uns, dass er sich eigentlich geehrt fühle, nun auch zum Kreis der Friedenspreisträger und der alternativen Nobelpreisträger zu gehören.
