Mobile Harm

Not sure if this is breaking News in the US, but it's big news here! Also the fact that it was know before Xmas, and was surppressed, nice to know that the people out there care for our children.

By JANE SYMONS
and ALEX PEAKE

KIDS should cut the number of calls they make on mobile phones and send text messages instead, an expert said yesterday.

Prof Sir William Stewart spoke out after a National Radiological Protection Board study warned children face greater health risks from handset radiation.

Board chairman Sir William urged parents not to buy youngsters phones and expressed concern that a quarter of Britain's seven to ten-year-olds have one.

He said: "I have a grandchild of four and one of two and I would not be recommending that they have mobile phones."

He added: "If there are risks, and we think there may be, the people who are going to be most affected are children. The younger the
child, the greater the danger. If you have a teenager and feel they can benefit in terms of security by having a mobile, it's a personal choice.

"They should use them for as short a time as possible and use text messaging.

HOW MOBILES AFFECT BRAIN

These diagrams show the extent to which heat radiating from a mobile spreads through the brains of an adult and children aged ten and five in one hour. Repeated exposure to radiation may cause damage such as tumours.

"But if mobile phones are available to three to eight-year-olds I can't believe for a moment that can be justified."

Sir William, speaking at the London launch of the study, also recommended kids use phones with low SARS values — indicating the rate of energy absorption in body tissue.

He admitted there was no hard evidence that phone emissions were damaging to health.

But he said far more information was needed.

The Department of Health yesterday revealed it was spending £7.5million on research into the possible health effects.

Health Minister Rosie Winterton said: "There are parents who want children to have mobiles. We are quite clear they ought to be very careful."

Mobile phone operators welcomed the NRPB's report, highlighting the lack of hard evidence of adverse health effects.

But MyMo, the first mobile designed for kids, was withdrawn from sale yesterday.

Powerwatch's First Press Release on the Stewart Report
http://www.powerwatch.org.uk/news/20050110_press.asp

Children and young people and the use of mobile phone:

In line with Department of Health Advice, Powerwatch believes that young people should only use a mobile phone when essential. Children under 11 should never use one, and over 11 they should be encouraged to use SMS texting and hold the phone away from their body when sending the message. Active "on-line" games should never be played.

Alasdair Philips, Powerwatch Director, states: "I believe that we will see a large increase in early-onset dementias when young phone users reach middle-age. Dementias (like Alzheimer's) that used to be seen after people reached 65, are now being diagnosed as early as 40 years of age. I believe that the Leif Salford work with rats strongly suggests that early mobile phone use is likely to greatly increase the chance of dementia developing at an early age." See:
http://www.powerwatch.org.uk/news/news507sal.asp

It is usually parents who buy mobile phones for the use of children and teenagers. The Department of Health recommends that children under 16 should only use their phones when essential. Their leaflet should be revised to contain the results of the last few years' research showing some of the adverse health effects from mobile phone use, as this will enable parents to make a more informed decision about the phone contract they choose, ensuring that it does not encourage their children to use the phone more than absolutely necessary. This leaflet should be handed to the purchaser as a mandatory part of the sales contract.

Mobile phone use by adults:

Powerwatch believes that adults should only use a mobile phone when absolutely necessary and always use a land-line whenever possible.

Companies should not expect their employees to use a mobile phone as their main means of communication. Powerwatch condemns the Government's new tax incentive where companies can provide their employees and members of their direct family (including children!) with mobile phones free of tax and national insurance charges. We also believe this is an anti-competitive incentive favouring the mobile operators over land-line providers and may well be illegal under European law.

Mobile phone Base Stations:

A recent NRPB Report showed that low height "de-minimis" base station installations expose members of the public to much higher levels of microwave radiation than much higher free-standing masts. There are 5,008 base stations 10 metres or under listed by the Operators. For technical and political reasons the NRPB ignored the 2,000 highest powered (radiating up to 100 watts) base stations, and decided to select 20 to measure from those with a relatively low power of 5 watts or less. The NRPB's remit had been to measure microcells (by definition low height/low power), and it deliberately ignored the alleged 'microcells' (the ones that defy the definition and are in fact low height/high power) that are the worst ones irradiating the public.

It is scandalous that these low height installations do not require any planning permission. What is worse, they do not even require any consultation with members of the public or local authorities. Operators are using these as a way of avoiding a public consultation and approval process. They just have to tell the local authority that they are going make the installation.

In one square quarter-of-a-mile in Soho there are 126 mobile phone base stations, 90 of which (71%) are less than 10 metres and most would not have needed any (including GPDO) planning permission. People living across the street from these will be continuously exposed to significant levels of pulsing microwave radiation.

We believe the Department of Health should set up a database collecting information about the adverse health effects experienced by people living near base stations, either self-reported or through a GP, to gather together the information needed to decide what risk, if any, the masts subject the general population to. If there is a subsection of the population that is more susceptible to such radiation, it will produce a good base of information for future epidemiological research.

Get off that mobile, expert tells children

Sarah-Kate Templeton

AN OFFICIAL report into the safety of mobile phones will warn that adults’ and children’s use of the technology is in danger of “running out of control” despite previous warnings of possible health risks.

Sir William Stewart, chairman of the Health Protection Agency, is expected to say this week that new evidence of potential health problems reinforces the need for children to use the phones only for essential calls.

He issued similar advice five years ago and is known to be concerned that it has been largely ignored. The proportion of children with phones has doubled since then as companies have promoted their use to the young. Stewart, who has barred his own grandchildren from using the technology, accepts that although there is no proof that mobile phones damage health, children need to limit their use as a precaution.

Omega: There is proof that mobile phones damage health. See under: http://www.buergerwelle.de/body_science.html
http://omega.twoday.net/topics/Wissenschaft+zu+Mobilfunk/

His scientists believe that if there are as yet unknown risks from mobiles, children may be more vulnerable because of their developing nervous systems, the greater absorption of energy into the tissues of the head and a longer lifetime of exposure.

Stewart, chairman of the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB), was appointed by the government to monitor mobile phone safety. His guidance, to be published on Tuesday, is expected to call on mobile telecoms companies to stop targeting children.

Among the most controversial moves have been attempts to encourage their use among children at primary schools. The British firm Communic8 recently launched MyMo, a phone aimed at children aged from four to eight.

According to a report by Mobile Youth, a mobile telecoms consultancy, a quarter of primary school children now own a mobile. The figure rises to 90% among 11 to 16-year-olds, according to research by Sheffield Hallam University.

The industry has directly challenged the NRPB’s advice that children should limit their use of mobiles. The Motorola website states: “There is no scientific basis to restrict the use of mobile phones by children and this remains a matter open for parental choice.”

Omega: There is scientific basis to restrict the use of mobile phones by children. See under: http://www.buergerwelle.de/body_science.html
http://omega.twoday.net/topics/Wissenschaft+zu+Mobilfunk/

The Stewart report is, however, expected to advise children and adults to take a “more precautionary approach”.

It will question whether mobile phone use is in danger of getting “out of control” and say that, though the weight of evidence does not show that mobile phones are dangerous, they have only been in use for a relatively short time and the possibility of health risks remains.

Of particular concern to the NRPB is a report published by researchers at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute in October, which showed that people who had used mobile phones for 10 years or more had an increased risk of developing acoustic neuroma, a benign tumour regarded as serious because of its position next to brain tissue.

In December, EU-backed research found that mobile phones can potentially cause cancer. The £2.2m Reflex study did not prove that mobile phones represent a serious health risk but provided worrying results in laboratory tests.

Human tissue was exposed to mobile phone radiation and the results showed that the radiation was able to damage DNA in human cells.

Mobile Phones and Health

Sir William Stewart, Chairman of the NRPB, said:

“In relation to mobile phone technology, our primary focus at NRPB is to ensure that the health and well-being of the general public is not being adversely affected by this technology. Today there are over 50 million mobile phones in use in the UK compared with 4.5 million a decade ago and numbers in use have doubled since 2000. The fact is that the use of mobile phones is now part of every-day life as an important means of easy communication by industry, security services, and the general public – and sometimes even as a fashion accessory. But because everyone has one does not necessarily mean that they are without potential adverse health effects".

Sir William also said:

"The fact is that the widespread use of mobile phones is a relatively recent phenomenon and it is possible that adverse health effects could emerge after years of prolonged use. The evidence base necessary to allow us to make firm judgements has not yet been accumulated. What we can say is that there is as yet no hard evidence of adverse health effects on the general public, but because of the current uncertainties we recommend a continued precautionary approach to the use of mobile phone technologies. This approach should be adopted by all involved in this area – including government, the mobile phone industry and all who choose to purchase a mobile phone for themselves, or their family, or their children”.

Wi-Fi, Health Care, and HIPAA: WLAN Management in the Modern Hospital

Wireless networking has quickly become a critical aspect of daily life in the hospital IT environment. With the maturation of the 802.11 standards (collectively known as Wi-Fi), hospital staff can remain connected to their critical systems regardless of their location in a facility. Additionally, a new breed of mobile applications has evolved that provide caregivers and administrators with on-demand access to the information and systems they need to better serve their patients. This has led to an increase both in the accuracy and efficiency of hospital operations, which has in turn led to patients that are more satisfied and better served.

The aim of the study was to assess in vitro the effect of electromagnetic field produced by mobile phones on the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD-1) and the level of malonyldialdehyde (MDA) in human blood platelets.

The suspension of blood platelets was exposed to the electromagnetic field with the frequency of 900 MHz for 1, 3, 5, and 7 min.

Our studies demonstrated that microwaves produced by mobiles significantly depleted SOD-1 activity after 1, 5, and 7 min of exposure and increased after 3 min in comparison with the control test. There was a significant increase in the concentration of MDA after 1, 5, and 7 min and decrease after 3 min of exposure as compared with the control test. On the grounds of our results we conclude that oxidative stress after exposure to microwaves may be the reason for many adverse changes in cells and may cause a number of systemic disturbances in the human body.

2. CELLULAR TELEPHONES AND EFFECTS ON THE BRAIN:

THE HEAD AS AN ANTENNA AND BRAIN TISSUE AS A RADIO RECEIVER.

Weinberger Z, Richter ED.

Jerusalem College of Technology, Jerusalem, Israel

Abstract:

Headache and other neuropsychological symptoms occur in users of cellular telephones, and controversy exists concerning risks for brain cancer.

We hypothesize these effects result from the head serving as an antenna and brain tissue as a radio receiver. The frequencies for transmission and reception by cellular telephones, about 900MHz for analog and 1800MHz for digital transmission, have wavelengths of 33-35 and 16-17cm, respectively.

Human heads are oval in shape with a short axis about 16 to 17cm in length. Near the ear there will be a cross-section in the head with an axis half the wavelength of RF/MW transmissions of 900MHz and equal to the wavelength of RF/MW transmissions at 1800MHz.

Therefore, the human head can serve as a lossy resonator for the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the cellular telephone, absorbing much of the energy specifically from these wavelengths.

Brain cells and tissues demodulate the cell-phone's audio frequencies from the radio frequency carrier. Low audio frequencies in the ranges of alpha and beta waves affect these waves and thereby influence brain function.

These effects state the case for a precautionary policy.

Malondialdehyd:

Quelle: http://lapmueller.de/html/info_27.html:

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Caused by EMF? - Doctors in Japan may be reluctant to diagnose Alzheimers

I wrote this a while back and sent it to the Gauss Network here in Japan for their input, but never got any back. Now, about three months later, I realized I never sent this to you.

In an Omega newsletter last July or August, I read an article about brain diseases in connection with chemical pollution. The article stated that the Japanese were not experiencing the increase in Alzheimers Disease that the rest of the world is now subjected to, and noted that when they leave Japan, they begin to be affected. I suspect that what is actually happening is that doctors may be reluctant to diagnose Alzheimers.

There appears to be a significant stigma attached to the condition. I stumbled into this accidentally when analyzing the behavior of a trouble-making older man in our community. When I mentioned that it fit the pattern of Alzheimers, I was trying to show him some compassion, but my remark was perceived as a shocking insult even by the people he had hurt.

Recently on TV we see many health-topic programs focusing on brain aging, where it has been noted that younger people are often showing deterioration of mental faculties similar to that of the elderly. Chronic fatigue syndrome and depression are rampant, and most of the time it is ascribed to purely psychological factors. The popular TV shows may point out missing nutrients or present mental exercises to keep ones thinking young. It is such a hot topic that if I get busy and forget I've left something on the stove, my husband gets worried that I am "getting old before my time." I have few statistics available, but it appears to me that the Japanese are showing an increase in brain deterioration just like everyone else.

In the past, I mentioned in your forum a condition occurring among the Japanese at a rate of 1-2% of the population throughout Japan, affecting all ages, but noted among the young, in which they withdraw from society, shutting themselves off in their rooms. At first the press was calling the condition "jiheisho" meaning autism, but later they switched to calling it "hikikomori" or withdrawing and hiding. What was curious was that it appeared to have a sudden onset coinciding temporally with a major expansion of cell phone service nationwide. The press was mum on this point, and I thought I was one of a very few who had noticed a connection, and I could not get corroborating evidence. It looks to me now that someone else has noticed and done some research into it, as the following article translated from Gauss Network's newsletter shows.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Caused by EMF?

From Gauss Tsushin (the newsletter of Japan's Gauss Network), No. 68 August 15, 2004

"About 70% of withdrawn children have chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) with reduced blood flow to the brain," says Kumamoto University Medical School Professor Teruhisa Miike regarding his investigation of cerebral blood flow among children failing to attend school, which showed reduced blood flow in 75% of the cases. He says that their failure to attend school is not a "psychological problem," but a serious illness accompanied by disorders in central nervous system function and immune function. "If you force them to go to school, they risk having real psychological problems as a result," he says.

This chronic fatigue syndrome may be caused by electromagnetic waves according to a study by Ryoichi Ogawa, a physician in Kobe, whose view that "Reduced cerebral blood flow may possibly result from the influence of electromagnetic waves from IT equipment" was introduced in the Sunday Mainichi weekly of May 4-11, 2004. An excerpt from this article is given below.

Dr. Ogawa noted that about 80% of his CFS patients were frequent users on a daily basis of cellular phones, personal computers, TV games and other IT devices, and decided to conduct a clinical investigation into a possible cause-effect relationship of cellular phones and desktop-style personal computers to CFS, a "poorly understood condition" in which general clinical tests show no abnormalities.

The subjects were 40 young people, 20 male and 20 female, ranging in age from 12 to 32, who had received treatment for CFS, and an additional 25 male and 25 female healthy family members of the patients, ranging in age from 15 to 35, for a total of 90 people. The investigation was performed using the "Super Doppler Method" to measure the speed of blood flowing during a period of one second in the ophthalmic artery located in the upper part of the eyelid. This artery branches off from the internal carotid artery, which carries blood from the heart to the brain, and this method of testing was established for clinical investigation of blockage of cerebral blood vessels.

The subjects were asked to use a cellular phone, holding it to their left ear for 30 seconds. Prior to use, all of the subjects showed normal blood flow of 10 cm/sec. in the ophthalmic artery of both left and right eye, but after using the cellular phone, this dropped to less than 5 cm/sec. in all of the subjects. When blood flow in this artery is less than 5 cm/sec, it is considered a sign of reduced cerebral blood flow.

The subjects were also asked to use a personal computer, sitting within one meter of the screen for 15 minutes of normal use. When measurements were made directly afterward, it turned out that the blood flow was reduced to less than 5 cm/sec in both eyes among all of the patients who had been treated for CFS. Even among the healthy group, about 78% showed a reduction to less than 5 cm/sec in both eyes.

In addition, the subjects were tested again for speed of blood flow in the ophthalmic artery 30 minutes after finishing their use of these devices. The results showed all of the healthy subjects to have recovered normally to 10 cm/sec, so in their case it was learned that the reduction in cerebral blood flow was temporary. Among the subjects who had received treatment for CFS, however, only 60% had recovered normally. This demonstrates a possibility of some kind of effect on cerebral blood flow by IT equipment, and that these patients will need to take care regarding electromagnetic fields in their daily lives after treatment.
