The case against phone masts

Dr Grahame Blackwell, an independent consultant on mast health issues, says mobile phone masts pose a serious risk to our health.

Cambridge Evening News 26.08 05

"I am a serious opponent of phone masts on health grounds. There have been six research studies into the potential ill health effects of masts. Every one of those studies has produced evidence of ill health effects.

"Radiation from masts reduces the production of melatonin.

"The significance of that is that melatonin regulates sleep patterns and also scavenges away pre-cancerous cells.

"If melatonin production is reduced the consequences are a disruption of sleep patterns and increased incidents of cancer.

"People living around phone masts are experiencing exactly those symptoms.

"Radiation also weakens the blood-brain barrier. Toxins from the blood system can get into brain cells. In the short term, this causes headaches, dizziness and disorientation. In the long-term, we would expect to see an increase in degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinsons and Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

"MND is a classic example. We are beginning to see clusters of MND around masts.

"All of those effects happen at levels of radiation that our Government says are safe. There is a big problem here."Dr Grahame Blackwell, an independent consultant on mast health issues, says mobile phone masts pose a serious risk to our health.

Is the brain influenced by a phone call?

Study: Is the brain influenced by a phone call? An EEG study of resting wakefulness

Abstract: Resting electroencephalogram of 20 healthy subjects in order to investigate the effect of electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure on EEG waking activity and its temporal development was recorded. The subjects were randomly assigned to two groups and exposed, in double-blind conditions, to a typical mobile phone signal (902.40 MHz, modulated at 217 Hz, with an average power of 0.25 W) before or during the EEG recording session. The results show that, under real exposure as compared to baseline and sham conditions, EEG spectral power was influenced in some bins of the alpha band. This effect was greater when the EMF was on during the EEG recording session than before it. The present data lend further support to the idea that pulsed high-frequency electromagnetic fields can affect normal brain functioning, also if no conclusions can be drawn about the possible health effects.

Moreover we also have the studies demonstrating that blood flow in the brain, to the optic nerve etc. are also affected, and that this is possibly related to vasodilation response to levels of nitric oxide (NO) caused by EMF impact on NO synthase, since exhaled NO can also be measured under EMF exposure.

NO is also a neurotransmitter, produced as required, not stored, and could well be responsible for some aspects of cognitive disruption. It also regulates REM sleep.

So there are some very interesting chain reactions that could explain why these observed effects happen. Of course there is more, and the ideas of Konstantin Meyl relating to electric field vortices concentrating energy in a small space may add to the argument regarding momentum in the EM photon (previous Omega post) going beyond the predicted energy of a photon.

But at least we certainly cannot say that we have no plausible reasons why the observed effects take place.

EMFs and enzyme behaviours should be a big research issue.

Andy

--------

Dear Andy and All:

I have found in my archive some more details about NO that may clear the whole picture: Nitric oxide, a friend or foe ?

The nitric oxide (NO) is a neurotransmitter and vascular smooth muscle relaxant, synthesized by deamination of arginine (an amino acid) by the enzyme NO synthetase (=NOS). Nitroglycerol (taken by angina pectoris patients) is metabolized also to NO, then relaxed smooth muscles. NO is well bound to RBC haemoglobin (Hb), when blood circulated in the lungs: The thiol groups in the two cysteines in the Hb molecule, bind the NO, and prevent the haems from inactivating it. Whereupon, the NO is released in oxygen-poor blood vessels along with oxygen, stabilizes blood pressure. NO raised concentration of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), that in turn, is active in membrane ion channels, and in numerous biochemical pathways. NO is a homeostasis signaling molecule, but also a potent free radical effector, acting in pathogenesis (Liaudet et al 2000). This paradoxical fate generated confusion, but well defining NO biological actions dissociated beneficial from toxic consequences: Normally at low concentration, NO acted as a 2nd messenger and a cytoprotective (antioxidant) factor, via direct interactions with transition metals and other free radicals. But when due to conditions high NO concentrations produced, and modified the formation of superoxide radical, the NO turned into indirect effects to form N2O3, ONOO-(peroxynitrite), NO2*, and NO3-. They in turn mediated oxidative and nitrosative cytotoxic stresses, attributed to NO, in inflammation, circulatory shock, and ischemia-reperfusion injury. Radicals excess in neurons derail neural and muscular activities. Dawson and Dawson (1996) showed that excess of NO, formed in the brain and at other neurons, reacted with superoxide anion, to make ONOO- that together with oxygen free radicals inflicted severe neural damage. Boczkowski (2001) showed that exogenous and endogenous peroxynitrite altered the structure and function of mitochondrial proteins, resulted in dysfunction and cellular or organ injury. NO produced in atherosclerotic-damaged vascular endothelial cells, promoted vasodilitation and oxidized low density lipoprotein (LDL), that enhanced atherosclerosis Thus inhaling vehicular emitted NOx, adds to such detrimental activity. In the nervous system, overactive phagocytic cells produced NO that entered neurons, and generated superoxide radical, that disrupted cellular structures. NO inhibited synthesis of mitochondrial complex 1 enzyme, that resulted in energy deficit, and more free radicals produced, thus wasting the cellular antioxidant pools to defuse them. This in turn, led to develop neurological ailments. Buzard and Kasprzak (2000) reported that oxidative stress was resulted from imbalance in cellular oxidation/reduction, by metals redox reactions with endogenous oxidants, and from effects on cellular antioxidant systems. The stress impaired (redox-sensitive) signaling molecules: NO, S-nitrosothiols, AP-1, NF-kappaB (in cell nucleus), IkappaB (its inhibitor), p53, and p21ras, resulting in variety of toxic effects such as carcinogenesis. Supportive experimental data for these toxicity and carcinogenicity for two toxic metals indicated that: Fe, Cu, and metal carcinogens: Ni, Cr, and Cd were bound selectively to particular cell constituents and affected Ca signaling. Oxidative stress caused, suggested the pathogenicity of toxic Pb, Hg and As. Yoshikawa et al (2000) showed that NO generated in mice by injected enterobacterial endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS), was enhanced by exposure to ELF-EMF (0.1 mT, 60 Hz). Considering that enterobacterial mass was a major human colon contents, the LPS in contact with colon wall cells probably enhanced generation of NO, that was enhanced further by EMF exposure.

Best,

Zamir

--------

Thanks Zamir!

At risk of being tedious, I have over 60 pages of citations and abstracts all pertaining to NO, (all three kinds of ) NOS, superoxide and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxynitrite, and the knock on effects as relating to exhibited symptoms of microwave sickness, including all the longer latency diseases. The key fits the lock disturbingly well. What I want to know is what it is about enzymes (such as nitric oxide synthase) that makes them particularly susceptible to modulated microwaves, what frequencies matter most, and whether it is the enzyme precursors (eg arginine), metals in their structure (eg Mg, Zn, Cu), or the genes that express them. Knowing this and being able to demonstrate it reliably would be a seriously powerful argument.

I don't believe this is the only problem, but it is presenting an amazing array of consistent pointers. I have yet to investigate any attributed microwave syndrome disorder that is not in some way directly mediated by the NO cascade.

This study was conducted to determine a possible relationship between regular cell phone use and different human semen attributes. The history-taking of men in our university clinic was supplemented with questions concerning cell phone use habits, including possession, daily standby position and daily transmission times. Semen analyses were performed by conventional methods. Statistics were calculated with SPSS statistical software. A total of 371 were included in the study. The duration of possession and the daily transmission time correlated negatively with the proportion of rapid progressive motile sperm (r = - 0.12 and r = - 0.19, respectively), and positively with the proportion of slow progressive motile sperm (r = 0.12 and r = 0.28, respectively). The low and high transmitter groups also differed in the proportion of rapid progressive motile sperm (48.7% vs. 40.6%). The prolonged use of cell phones may have negative effects on the sperm motility characteristics.

I have been happy a lot that (finally) arises the debate on the possible effects of the non ionizing radiations on the wildlife (up to now we only listened the Industry to say that there is not enough evidences....).

In the first place I want to thank the interest shown by English Nature (and Stephen Kearney) in my investigations on the effects of the non ionizing radiations on the birds and trees, and I also want to make some comments to the comments from the CEH on my works.

1) The manuscript "Possible Effects of Electromagnetic Fields from Phone Masts on a Population of White Stork (Ciconia ciconia)" will be published soon in a refereed scientific journal. For this work measurements of the electromagnetic fields, like CEH suggest, were made (they are not in the draft that circulates in internet).

2) I am very of agreement with the sentence: "Studies of the influence of NIR on bird populations are difficult to conduct and can be compromised by changes or differences in bird habitat either over time, or between control and study areas".

While in the laboratory all the variables are controlled in these field studies the methodology is difficult.

More mobiles, and sparrows take flight

Ambarish Mukherjee

New Delhi, Nov. 30

THE wireless telecom revolution is catching on at the expense of a tiny winged creature -- the house sparrow. The tiny birds are fast disappearing from cities "contaminated" with electromagnetic waves arising out of increased number of mobile handsets.

According to Dr S. Vijayan, Director of the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), "A number of studies has been conducted to find out the relationship between the increase in electromagnetic waves and the decrease in the number of sparrows. A positive correlation has been found between them."

"There have been studies in Spain which showed that sparrows disappear from cities where electromagnetic contamination is very heavy," Dr Vijayan added.

A study was initiated earlier this year in London by the British Trust for Ornithology to investigate whether the explosion of electromagnetic waves from portable handsets is wiping out sparrows in London. The British study involves 30,000 birdwatchers who will examine the urban sparrow population near cell-phone masts, where electromagnetic fields are most concentrated.

London has witnessed a steep fall in its sparrow population -- a 75 per cent fall since 1994, which coincides with the emergence of the cell-phone. Electromagnetic waves travel through the air to the cell-phone masts located above tall buildings in the cities. These waves then travel to and from between the handset and the tower while one is using the handset, and this results in increased electromagnetic contamination in the air.

The rapidly increasing number of cell-phone subscribers is resulting in higher concentration level of electromagnetic waves in the air which clashes with the earth's electromagnetic field.

Dr Vijayan also pointed out that sparrows are found to be disappearing from areas where mobile towers are installed.

SACON has also initiated a detailed study to find out how exactly these small birds are being affected.

"These are all circumstantial evidences. Now we need to prove how it is exactly affecting the sparrows. My feeling is that it probably affects their central nervous system. We are conducting studies with inputs from various cities on the falling number of sparrows in which the effect of electromagnetic contamination from mobile phones are also being examined," Dr Vijayan said.

He said increased exposure to electromagnetic waves also affects small animals. For example, in rats, it is found that the sperm count has decreased while in the case of chicken embryonic, mortality has become very high. There could be more examples, he added.

4) The article "effects on the trees" has been published in the journal "Ecosistemas" (Balmori, A. 2004. "Pueden afectar las microondas pulsadas emitidas por las antenas de telefonía a los árboles y otros vegetales?" Ecosistemas: 2004/3: 1-10)

http://www.revistaecosistemas.net/articulo.asp?Id=29&Id_Categoria=1&tipo=otros_contenidos

In all ways it is only necessary to visit some phone mast with a meter to check in situ that, where more impacts the radiation, some trees (mainly Populus sp.) begin to dry off for up.

Regarding the topic of the acidification, nobody doubts today that it has been the causing of the deterioration of many forests but to what I refer is that, in areas without chemical pollutants (but with electromagnetic pollution), the trees died for effect of electromagnetic fields (Volkrodt hypothesis).

5) I encourage English Nature to carry out similar studies (for example following my recommendations published in the refereed scientific journal "ARDEOLA" (BALMORI, (2004). "Posibles efectos de las ondas electromagnéticas utilizadas en la telefonía inalámbrica sobre los seres vivos". Ardeola, 51: 477-490.) (Please see attached).

http://www.omega-news.info/ardeola_51(477-490)_balmori.pdf

I believe that the critique is a very important part of the science. but I worry about not be carried out studies while the few ones that are made that find effects on the wildlife are criticized. For example the one that CEH bases a part of the critical to my studies (Cummins, C.P. and Osborn, D. (2002) "Non-ionising radiation and wildlife". Report to English Nature.) it is not published in any refeered scientific journal (???) (It would be of great interest for me to obtain a copy from this manuscript. Is this possible?).

In all ways the effects of those that I speak from in my works are not the thermal ones (it seems that with the standards of the ICNIRP they are solved).

Lastly I am convinced that in spite of the lacks and methodological difficulties of my studies, before or later they will be replied by other investigators, and that this is a serious environmental problem, without any doubt comparable with the pesticides or the changes in the land uses, that even alters the DNA of the wildlife (and man) although the electromagnetic radiations cannot be seen... (See European Reflex Project:
http://www.verum-foundation.de/cgi-bin/content.cgi?id=euprojekte01

("I have no doubt in my mind that, at the present time, the greatest polluting element in the earth's environment... more serious even than global climate change and chemical pollution... is the proliferation of electromagnetic fields." Robert O. Becker.)

Thank you again. With my best regards.

An investigation into the vector ellipticity of extremely low frequency magnetic fields from appliances in UK homes

The biological effects of EM field ellipticity have been getting a closer look recently. Ellipticity is a measure of how much a field's direction of polarization curves in space. This is mostly likely another reason why those with ES have different reactions to different field sources even at similar average fields strengths. I'm submitting this email to continue building our archive of scientific reviews and assist those who use this group's collective experience and findings for research.

-Beau

ps. Note, it was found that ovens, both standard and microwave, generated fields with very high ellipticities compared to other appliances. This could explain those who are affected by a standard oven even at low field strengths.

An investigation into the vector ellipticity of extremely low frequency magnetic fields from appliances in UK homes*

Abstract: Elliptically polarized magnetic fields induce higher currents in the body compared with their plane polarized counterparts.

This investigation examines the degree of vector ellipticity of extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MFs) in the home, with regard to the adverse health effects reportedly associated with ELF-MFs, for instance childhood leukaemia.

Tri-axial measurements of the magnitude and phase of the 0–3000 Hz magnetic fields, produced by 226 domestic mains-fed appliances of 32 different types, were carried out in 16 homes in Worcestershire in the summer of 2004. Magnetic field strengths were low, with average (RMS) values of 0.03 ± 0.02 µT across all residences. In contrast, background field ellipticities were high, on average 47 ± 11%.

Microwave and electric ovens produced the highest ellipticities: mean respective values of 21 ± 21% and 21 ± 17% were observed 20 cm away from these appliances.

There was a negative correlation between field strength and field polarization, which we attribute to the higher relative field contribution close to each individual (single-phase) appliance. The measurements demonstrate that domestic magnetic fields are extremely complex and cannot simply be characterized by traditional measurements such as time-weighted average or peak exposure levels. We conclude that ellipticity should become a relevant metric for future epidemiological studies of health and ELF-MF exposure.

Today's "safe" radiofrequency (RF) exposure limits DON'T protect human health near transmitters!

MARJORIE LUNDQUIST (1), The Bioelectromagnetic Hygiene Institute

Maxwell's theory implies that electromagnetic (EM) radiation carries both energy and momentum. The momentum may have both linear and angular contributions; angular momentum [AM] has a spin part associated with polarization and an orbital part associated with spatial distribution. Any interaction between radiation and matter is inevitably accompanied by an exchange of momentum. This often has mechanical consequences ..."(2)

Voluntary consensus standards [ANSI C95; NCRP; INCIRP] protect human health from most thermal [energy transfer] effects, but no standards yet exist to protect health against athermal [momentum transfer] effects, though laboratory transfer of spin AM was reported by 1935 (3) and of orbital AM by 1992 (2) for an optical vortex [tip of Poynting vector (PV) traces a helix about the beam axis].

In the far field of a dipole RF transmitter, radiation is linearly polarized (minimal spin AM) and locally approximated by a plane wave (zero orbital AM), but in the near field the orbital AM is non-zero [tip of PV traces an ellipse(4) in air] implying an athermal hazard [e.g., rain tumors in cellular phone users] against which no standard now in use anywhere in the world protects!

Abstract Submitted for the MAR05 Meeting of The American Physical Society Sorting Category: 18.3 (T)

A half-century ago physicists missed a major public service opportunity, costing the human race widespread chronic illness and many deaths!

MARJORIE LUNDQUIST, Bioelectromagnetic Hygiene Institute

Radar -- pulsed microwave (MW) radiation -- helped the Allies win World War II but health concerns soon arose. Alerted to a syndrome resembling mild radiation poisoning, (1) a worried M.D. surveyed radar-exposed workers, finding a high incidence of internal bleeding, (2) leukemia cases in 600 radar operators, 2 brain tumor cases in a 5-man MW research team and many complaints of headache. He sent his report (2) to the Pentagon in 1953.

Alarmed Navy officers convened a meeting (3) [mostly of electrical engineers (EEs)] to identify a safe level of MW exposure for servicemen. Biophysicist Herman Schwan attended, playing a major role in establishing 10 mW/cm2 as a thermally safe MW exposure limit. The IEEE became sole sponsor of ANSI C95 [an early health standard for radiofrequency (RF) exposure] with negative long-term consequences for human health!

I review RF health standards development since 1953, comparing what physicists might have done, had they -- not EEs -- had this responsibility! [See also my technical abstract.]

Spanish paper on RF effects on birds

Tuesday August 16th 2005, 8:00 pm

Translation of the summary:

Posibles Efectos De Las Ondas Electromagneticas Utilizadas En La Telefonia Inalambrica

Alfonso Balmori

Ardeola 51(2), 2004, 477-490

Summary - Possible effects of the electromagnetic waves used in th ewireless telephony on wildlife. A bibliographical revision of the possible effects of the waves used in the wireless telephony on animals is presented and its impact on wild birds is analyzed. After exposing the technical characteristics and the legal situation of this new technology, the scientific discoveries that could have interest for the study of their effects on the wild fauna are revised. Basing us on the current scientific knowledge the foregone possible consequences for the birds is commented, keeping in mind the deterioration of some egosystems that they occupy. It is recommended to consider the electromagnetic contamination in the microwave range a possible factor in decline of some populations at risk, especially of the urban birds, subjected at more radiation levels. Effects on birds in rural and protected areas that have phone masts near cannot be rejected. Keeping in mind that birds are excellent bio-indicators, we point out the importance of carrying out studies that value the effects of this new type of contamination and some methodologies that could be useful for this purpose are presented.

I can email the pdf. file of this paper (in Spanish) upon request.

Canary bird recovers from mobile phone mast exposure

August 14, 2005

Nijkerk (The Netherlands) - The canary bird of H. in Nijkerk has not sung for almost eight months. He was pecking his skin and loosing feathers. The day after his cage was protected against the radiation of a GSM antenna mast at 50 metres distance, the bird started to make noise again and even produced some trills. Ten days after, he sits proudly on his stick and does not loose his feathers anymore.

The cage is in the living room. In this room, experts of Telecom Agency of the ministry of Economic Affairs of The Netherlands measured 1,14 V/m (ca. 3000 mikroWatt/m2) for GSM 1800 MHz. The cage has been protected by fine metal mesh and aluminium foil at the bottom. Visitors think it's pathetic, but the bird is doing better thanks to the protection. He sings many times and a few days ago he has been heard singing in the early morning as well.

The owner of the canary bird has serious health problems himself. They started when a GSM 1800 MHz mast was installed on top of a building opposite of his home. The heating, television and other devices with electronic parts gave a lot of troubles. When H. stays for a few days in a place without high frequency radiation, most of his complaints disappear and the others are reduced to a bearable level.

The experiment with the canary bird shows that health problems caused by mobile phone radiation are not psychological primarily, since a bird can not be anxious about an antenna installation. The cage is still in the same position and without draught. There has been no change in taking care of this bird.

The recovery of the canary can be explained only by the reduction of the intensity of the GSM mobile phone mast radiation (DECT telephones are removed and wireless computers absent). The intensity inside the cage is about 0,5 mikroWatt/m2 after protection.

Canary birds were once used in coal mines to check the quality of the air.

When a canary died, the workers had to escape from the mine immediately. The experiment with the canary in The Netherlands shows that birds are 'sensitive' as well for the electromagnetic radiation of mobile communication systems, including DECT-telephones and wireless networks. In fact this should not amaze anybody, since many scientific research has found biological ('non-thermal') effects of radiofrequency radiation in humans, animals and plants.

I received interesting & important posts in response to the Canary story,

It is interesting to note that in Osafia, the Druz village that removed antennas because of more than 200 cancer cases (15 new cancer cases were diagnosed only last month), birds disappeared from the village when the antennas were there, and now with no antennas- birds are back !!

Here are the posts - concentrated together they give quite a strong picture.

From Milt Bowling (Canada )

The National Research Council of Canada did lots of studies on the non-thermal effects of microwave radiation on birds in the 1960s, before the wireless industry took control of the science. They found that bird feathers acted as dielectric receptors. Birds that had been plucked under anesthesia showed no reaction to radiation until the 12th day, when their feathers started to grow back.

Studies also showed altered EEG patterns, escape behaviour, other signs of stress in the form of vocalization, defecation and initiation of flight. Parakeets chose an unradiated feeder over a radiated one. Domestic fowl [Leghorns] increased egg production by 13.7% under radiation. Unfortunately, the mortality rate of the radiated colony was double that of the control colony. Their exposures ranged from 0.2 uW/cm2 to 360 uW/cm2. Young chicks exposed to 25mW/cm2 collapsed on the floor of the cage and remained in that position until the radiation was turned off. Time to collapse ranged from 5 to 20 seconds.

Mike Repacholi at one time was with Health Canada and certainly would have had access to these studies. I wonder if WHO recommendations will include this science?

From Larry Blackhall, Canada, who is studying the subject, this is part of his research :

National Research Centre of Canada - (NRC)

Scientific peer reviewed and archived laboratory controlled studies done by the NRC of Canada demonstrate conclusively the harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation on living systems. These studies are available through the NRC archives.

To obtain copies by telephone call 1 800 668 1222 or visit their website at http://www.nrc.ca/cisti .

There is a nominal charge of aproximately $12 cdn.

Here are three brief relevant extracts from three of the studies;

1. Extract from LTR-CS-113 by Dr J Bigu, 1973, titled:

"Interaction of electromagnetic fields and living systems with special reference to birds."

During the initial stabilizing period the egg production of each colony was the same, but following the onset of radiation the egg production of the radiated colony increased to a higher level at which it remained essentially constant. In terms of the total number of eggs produced the diference amounts to an increase of 13.7% - an increase that could be of economic significance in raising poultry provided other, and undesired, interaction effects do not appear.

However the mortality rate of the radiated colony was almost double that of the control colony through each of phases A and B.

2. Extract from LTR-CS-18 by Dr J A Tanner, 1969, titled:

"Effects of microwave radiation on Parakeets in Flight"

Conclusion: The results obtained in this experiment indicates that microwave radiation has an aversive effect on birds in flight comparable to that previously observed in caged birds. This leads the way to a possible solution of the bird hazard problem in aviation.

3. Extract from LTR-CS-89 by Dr. J A Tanner, 1973, co-authored by Dr. Romero-Sierra, Dept of Anatomy, Queens' University, Kingston, Ont., titled;

"Bird Feathers as Dialectic Receptors of Microwave Radiation."

Depending on many factors the use of microwave radiation can be detrimental or beneficial to humans. One beneficial use of microwave radiation is to reduce the hazards of birds to aircraft. This forms part of an extensive program designed to shed some light on the complex nature of the interaction of microwave radiation with biological systems.

More mobiles, and sparrows take flight

Ambarish Mukherjee

New Delhi, Nov. 30

THE wireless telecom revolution is catching on at the expense of a tiny winged creature — the house sparrow.

London has witnessed a steep fall in its sparrow population — a 75 per cent fall since 1994, which coincides with the emergence of the cell-phone.

Electromagnetic waves travel through the air to the cell-phone masts located above tall buildings in the cities. These waves then travel to and fro between the handset and the tower while one is using the handset, and this results in increased electromagnetic contamination in the air.

Subject: EMF in the barnyard

Dear Wolfgang Scherer

We were very interested in your account of radiofrequeny radiation (RFR)effects on cattle and birds on the Bavarian farm. Of particular interest were the effects on the birds, as we have documented three cases of RFR effects on birds here in Sydney, Australia.

We thought you may find this of interest also. The exquisite sensitivity of the canary, and it would seem other birds, is obviously incompatible with the radiofrequency radiation (RFR) associated with cellular phone transmitters. A warning for the human population?

We wonder if it would be a useful exercise to survey the caged bird population within a given distance from mobile phone base stations.

Following are the cases we have documented.

Case 1.. Fairlight NSW : Unusual behaviour of flock of approx. 17 black crows that usually roosted on the roof of a high rise apartment block.

After the installation of a mobile phone base station (MBS) nearby resident noticed the birds became noisier and unsettled. This behaviour continued for about two weeks-the birds are now no longer in this neighbourhood.

Case2.. Caringbah NSW : Within 200 metres of a MBS Bantam hens and roosters died unexpectedly from unknown causes, within a short time of the installation of the MBS.

Note: On the same premises, a family of two adults and three young adults each progressively developed 'microwave hearing' and moderate to severe headaches after the same MBS installation.

The headaches diminished after alterations were made to the electricity power supply in the street. (Details available on request)

The microwave hearing associated with the MBS continues.

Case 3...Kirrawee NSW: For a number of years an exotic bird breeder had approx. 350 birds located one hundred metres distance from a radiofrequency antenna used by a paging service. Within four months of the installation being upgraded to a mobile base station (MBS) most birds refused to breed, those that did breed prematurely removed the young from the nests. Two only young birds survived the season, one only has feathers, the other none at all.

Some species became aggressive, defeathering their mates.

The owner has since moved house.

Effects of exposing chicken eggs to a cell phone in "call" position over the entire incubation period

From the abstract: The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of exposing fertile chicken eggs to a cell phone repeatedly calling a ten-digit number at 3-min intervals over the entire period of incubation. A significantly higher percentage of embryo mortality was observed in the "exposed" compared to the "sham" group in 2 of the 4 replicates (p<.05). In comparison with control groups, additional embryo mortality in the exposed group occurred mainly between Days 9 and 12 of incubation but a causal relationship between the intensity of the electric field and embryo mortality could not be established.
