Tell Wild Oats to Drop Weyerhaeuser

Rainforest Action network

February 15th, 2005

Wild Oats, an environmentally-minded grocery store with about 100 store locations in North America, uses Weyerhaeuser paper bags in some of its stores. Wild Oats should not be affiliated with a company that is notorious for logging national and old growth forests, destroying the habitat of endangered species, such as the northern spotted owl and woodland caribou, and converting native forests into tree plantations. Please send a message to the CEO of Wild Oats today - Mr. Perry Odak, asking him to cancel the company's business with Weyerhaeuser.

Weyerhaeuser will not change its destructive business practices until it begins to lose customers. We need to tell Weyerhaeuser's biggest customers that we don't want them to support Weyerhaeuser.

Register your disappointment with Wild Oats purchasing by making a 60-second call now to the CEO of Wild Oats, Mr. Perry Odak. Ask the CEO to "stop putting organic, fair trade and other socially responsible groceries into disposable paper bags made by Weyerhaeuser - a company that is known for clear cutting North America's last ancient forests. The Life and Brutal Death of Sister Dorothy, a Rainforest Martyr

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/021605X.shtml

From: Greenpeace <usnewsletter@activism.greenpeace.org>
http://usactions.greenpeace.org/

It is with much regret that we tell you of the brutal murder of a woman we've worked with on many occasions. For the past 37 years, Sister Dorothy Stang worked tirelessly supporting the rights of rural workers and defending the Amazon from deforestation. Last week, the 74-year old American-born nun made the ultimate sacrifice for her cause as she was gunned down by two men in Anapu, Brazil.

A Senseless Death

The murder of Sister Dorothy is a tragedy, but it not unexpected. The Amazon Rainforest is not only beautiful, it is a highly volatile and dangerous area. In addition to rampant illegal logging - slavery, corruption and violence are regular occurrences. Death threats are not uncommon.

Activists risk their lives every day fighting against forest destruction and for the rights of local communities. As we mourn the death of Sister Dorothy Stang, we know that our fight continues. Please help us protect the forests so that her death will not be in vain. Read on to learn about three actions you can take right now.

1. Stop the Violence

Urge the Brazilian government to implement concrete measures to end the illegal logging and guarantee a sustainable future for the Amazon forest and its inhabitants. Since Sister Dorothy's murder, the Brazilian government has designated two million acres of forestland as reserves, now we must make sure that this protection is enforced. Take action!

Learn more about the life and death of Sister Dorothy.

2. Save "Muggle" Forests

The excitement is building as Harry Potter fans prepare for the long-awaited release of the sixth book in the Harry Potter series. While the incredible success of J.K. Rowling's tales are a boost for children's literature (and, let's be honest...adults' literature), the production of those books spell bad news for ancient forests. In 2003, Bloomsbury and Raincoast Books co-published the Canadian edition of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on 100 percent recycled paper. Help us convince the U.S. publisher - Scholastic - to follow suit and print Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince on ancient forest friendly paper. Take action!

3. End "Kleercuts"

The manufacturer of Kleenex brand tissues, Kimberly-Clark, is destroying ancient forests like the magnificent Boreal forest of Canada, to create its products. Ancient forests are being flushed down the toilet or thrown away even though ecological alternatives exist. Please help us convince Kimberly-Clark to stop destroying ancient and endangered forests and to start using more recycled fiber in its products. Take action!

More on the Smokestack Six

We're pleased to report that five of the six smokestack activists have been released from jail. They are relieved to be home, but know that the sixth member, Josh, still has some long weeks ahead. If you haven't already, you can send a message of support to Josh and the others in our discussion center. The activists assured us that all the comments they received helped the days pass a little quicker.

Post your message.

Environmentalists raise outcry over forest firm's road-building in Clayoquot

Victoria Times Colonist

Wednesday, February 09, 2005

VICTORIA - An environmental group is raising the alarm over International Forest Products' construction of a logging road into the Hesquiat Lake Creek valley north of Tofino.

Friends of Clayoquot Sound on Monday described the building of the road as "an ecological crime" and called on Interfor to halt construction. The group said this marks the first time in 14 years that an intact wilderness valley in the sound has been subject to road-building and the falling of ancient temperate rainforest.

But Interfor's West Coast division area manager Don McMillan said the company has necessary approval from both government and first nations to conduct the road work.

"We've got approvals at all levels,' " McMillan said. "We're following all of the very strict science panel recommendations and government and first nations in terms of the plans that have been signed off and approved."

Diego Garcia, a Friends of Clayoquot Sound spokesman, said even though Interfor may have the legal right to construct the road, that doesn't mean it should.

Undisturbed valleys are rare on Vancouver Island, where 75 per cent of the original productive forest has been logged, the group said in a news release. It calls on Interfor to immediately cease all forestry activity in Clayoquot's intact valleys.
